A Castle for Christmas (2021)
Tumblr media
I guess I didn’t realize this was a Netflix original. I thought this would be terrible, but it wasn’t. I typically like Netflix originals a bit more than Hallmark originals. Something else I discovered about myself while watching this- I am not really a fan of Brooke Shields, but I did warm up to her a little by the end.
Sophie Brown (Brooke Shields) is a famous author whose fans have revolted against her because she killed off the love interest in her popular Emma Gale series. After an appearance on the Drew Barrymore show goes a bit off the rails and with her fans and her publicist Claire (Desiree Burch) breathing down her neck to bring back Winston from the dead, she decides to go to Scotland for a while. Specifically to the small town near the castle Dun Dunbar because her father worked there as a kid before moving to the states. She quickly meets several people from the town, including the castle tour guide Thomas (Lee Ross) and the groundskeeper Myles (Cary Elwes) and his dog Hamish. After visiting the castle and getting into a fight with Myles, she goes to the pub. There she meets a knitting club and quickly befriends them all- middle aged divorcee Maisie (Andi Osho), elderly Helen (Tina Gray) who went to school with Sophie's dad, young and free spirited Rhona (Eilidh Loan), and strong and silent Angus (Stephen Oswald).
Sophie is trying to write her next Emma Gale novel (and she plans on giving in to her fans demands), but it's just not coming to her. She is also trying to buy Dun Dunbar from the owner, who she discovers is Myles, but he's not going down without a fight. So between failing to write, spending time with the knitting club, fighting with Myles, and video chatting with her daughter Lexi (Vanessa Grasse) in college, Sophie is very busy. Claire is still harassing her, but life is showing her that she might have a different story she wants to tell.
I really enjoyed the music in this movie. Like, I'm strongly considering looking into other movies with scores by the same person. Also, I appreciated the de-glamorizing of life in a castle. Brooke Shields isn’t a great actress, but everybody else did well. As an aspiring writer and avid reader, I can appreciate the position Sophie is in. I don't think I'd be someone wanting her to bring back the dead guy, though.
Overall, shockingly good with 4 stars.

ughghghghgh im back on my assassins shit and I think I've finally realized why I prefer productions that have the balladeer become lee harvey oswald other than 'thats cool':
the balladeer only sings for the successful assassinations...except for lee-- he's already gone for lee, the American Dream has essentially been killed before lee, and now theres a void for the last successful assassination
the next four are failures, they wouldnt get ballads anyway, but for all intents and purposes Lee should, but if lee is all thats remaining of the American Dream, the last part of the balladeer, it really emphasizes why the other assassins need him to do it, why this assassination right in the middle is so important, because him killing JFK does change the country
if lee is the balladeer it means that the American Dream isn't only dead, it's been broken and made into another person with a gun and blood on their hands

Some thoughts connected to this post https://chronicallyfabulous22.tumblr.com/post/688789394254069760/i-dont-mean-to-be-rude-but-i-dont-think-ive
I genuinely don’t know how many people here now were around or even in fandom back around 2013ish but I need to explain how it was actual hell for a lot of young girls.
To put it bluntly the Stephen Moffat/Matt Smith era of Doctor Who made the show wildly popular in the US, in no small part thanks to tumblr, mostly with pre-teen and teen girls. Basically everybody involved was thrilled and it made a shit ton of money. Except it somehow, for some fucking reason, made Stephen Moffat so irrationally angry that he basically spent the better part of 2013-14 saying as many nasty things about female fans as possible.
If you ever wondered why the superwholock fandom pretty much disappeared into thin air? This was the start. He, and by extension many of the men who admired him, encouraged an amount of bullying I genuinely have not seen since. It boiled down to, girls are dumb, girls do not understand sci-fi, girls have nothing to contribute to the conversation, and the only reason they watch shows like Doctor Who is because of hot actors. This quickly seeped into surrounding fandoms like SPN and Sherlock but this was the epicenter.
There were rape threats, death threats, anon hate so numerous it often froze our inboxes. I had somebody tell me I deserved to be gang raped. My crime? I ran an 11th Doctor fan page. Which as you can imagine were pretty fuckin numerous in ye old 2013. It got substantially worse when Peter Capaldi was cast. He often joined in the condemnations of female fans although I do not think he deserves much blame for starting this.
At the end of the day the vast majority of the fandom that made up superwholock and the doctor who and Sherlock fandoms had it made very clear to them that we were not welcome in fandom spaces. Some of us migrated, I know a lot of people who either moved to places like Instagram or shifted to fandoms like Marvel. Now in 2022 most of the people who partook in this are still doing very similar things on Twitter, just look at the Stranger Things fandom.
Tl;dr the reason a large chunk of the doctor who fandom and most of the superwholock fandom disappeared boils down to the fact that the creators encouraged an avalanche of online hate surrounding female, especially young female fans

What do y'all think of the theory that the British secret service was involved in Rasputin's murder?
Like the agent Oswald Rayner admitted to his cousin he was involved, translated Yusupov's first book and burned all his papers before he died. The other agent Stephen Alley was literally born in Yusupov's palace as his father was Yusupov's tutor.
It's definitely very sus. At least I'm 100% sure the attempted cyanide poisoning was made up for an entertaining story, it's just too unrealistic soap opera drama lol. And there was no cyanide found in the autopsy.
