Okay, before you jump down to the masterpieces listed below, I just wanted to state this:

These authors have given this phenomenal content for free, baked with time and effort. I have never once ignored this, hence why I try and comment on each and every one of these fics. However, my energy and ability to be verbose differs day to day. Some of these fics I have not given proper comments for, despite this, I will be on it the moment I can be. In the time being, (once I am able to find my comments on each of these fics) I will be sharing my adoration for them further in other posts (and most likely link back to this one).

With that being said, please, PLEASE take your time to check each of these fics out. If they're not your cup of tea? Valid! But hands down I have never dedicated myself to making a fic rec like this until now. Remember when the Audrey villain leaks came out and then we saw the offical c4 and s3 outfit reveals and saw the c4 on the isle and the s3 in an auradon forest and we all thought there had been some sort of time spell where Audrey twisted time and instead of the c4 coming to Auradon it was the s3 so Audrey stayed with Ben and there was a whole adventue to fix the timeline? no? just me? okay

Facilier ran an underground motorrace and the vks had to race to get the key to Hades lair #and we all thought Harry and Gil had dyed their hair blue becuase that reveal photo of the s3 looked so odd for Harry's hair lighting and i #looked blue #and we all thought Audrey had gone to a wishing well like in ouat and had cast a time spell and the vks had to work together to get their #timeline back #Uma #Mal and Audrey and Hades are the only ones who remember the last timeline #aka demi-gods #person who cast the spell #and god #and Mal goes to see Hades and confronts him cuz hes a god and might know where cronos sundial is so she can get her timeline back #but she also notices alto of the isle is-way better than what she and her friends had done?? theres fresh food-no one is wearing ratty old #clothes that were trash from auradon #the air is better #and theres no propagana pictures #Mal asks-not so descretly-what happened and Hades just goes 'uma.' #Uma made it her whole ass mission to make the isle a better place in gernal becuase even if they're steadely getting kids off-its still a #really bad place and-ya know-HUMAN RIGHTS #Ben is very supportive and the isle becomes less an inhumane prison and more just a isle of solitude where the villains live without magic #the barrier was edited personally by FG and Uma to allow fresh air and water in and out of the isle becuase it was really fucked up that #once ANYTHING gets in it cant go out so the isle waters were really really poluted and bad and FG was like- "how did i not know it was this #bad!?“ and uma is just like ”....really?“ #anyway i have feelings about the fandoms old theories about d3 #anyway Mal goes through teh deliema of either going back to her timeline where the isle is still really bad but shes happy or #stay in the timeline where the isle is much better but she's still stuck and not with Ben/becoming queen #so she has the same choice in this alt timeine that she gets in d3 but its much more-just on her-becuase she knows Uma wont twist back #the timeline-shes happy #Harry and Gil are happy-lots of kids are already off the isle #and Ben looks happy too...hopefully

Frisk has a mission, to reach a hospital across a dangerous country filled with a deadly infection. Lost and alone, they run into a flower monster: Flowey, stuck watching the world crumble. Frisk saves him, and in return he leads Frisk to another monster: Toriel.  With everything she held dear already dust she agrees to help lead Frisk to their destination.

Sans and Papyrus run a delivery service between a larger quarantine zone and smaller establishments that can’t quite get help on their own.  When Toriel and Frisk run into them, they end up staying with the brothers to help recuperate and resupply.

Review of The Absinthe Underground by Jamie Pacton

Summary

Sybil and Esme are best friends, roommates, and maybe a little bit more. They are also poster thieves, though Esme only reluctantly plays lookout. One night, they are caught by Maeve, the owner of the Absinthe Underground, the premier nightclub in the 1920s-inspired city of Severon, and she offers them a deal; the funds to do anything they want with their lives in exchange for stealing the jewels of the Moonshadow Queen, Mab. And who could resist such an offer?

Unfortunately, the plot of this book, while it boasts an intriguing presence and beautiful setting, is very rushed and never really takes the time to build tension. Throughout the book, Sybil and Esme must steal three items to then help them steal Mab's jewels. There's a lot of potential for each of these heists to be a clever, hair-raising scenes, but each of them lasts maybe five pages each. While Sybil is portrayed as a daredevil poster thief, she definitely doesn't have the skill set for these high security heists, and Esme absolutely doesn't. They get through these situations far too easily, and it causes the tension to fall flat.

The worlds of Severon and Fae are very aesthetically pleasing, and there's nothing really major excluded in terms of worldbuilding. However, there are some questions I just generally wish were answered, like some things concerning Sybil's family and what the actual power of the jewels is; if there is anything.

The characters are definitely the saving grace of this story. Esme and Sybil have greatly distinctive personalities and pretty decent development. Esme in particular learns to stand up for herself, and their relationship, even just platonically, grows a lot. Despite the lack of plot tension, there is good romantic tension, and the romance is very cute. It was probably the most enjoyable part of the book for me.

There is also a good side romance and some good side characters, but I will say that there are some side characters that really aren't well developed. Their personalities are flat, and their motivations seem to be curated just for the main characters to have aid in their quest.

I'd say the writing for this book is pretty average for a YA novel. The descriptions of Severon really hit that 1920s, art noveau aesthetic, and, like I mentioned, there are quite a few scenes with some good romantic tension. Unfortunately, there is a general issue with telling instead of showing, especially concerning the main characters' thought process. There are many times when the characters explicitly explain why they think something or their reasoning for doing something instead of trusting the reader to draw their own conclusions.

Also, as I discussed in the plot section, the pacing is way too fast in this book. I don't often say this about a book, but it needs an extra 100 pages or so. The story would benefit so much from being taken more slowly, getting more spread out, especially the individual heists.

Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed by this book. It has a great premise, the aesthetics really come through, and it's got a cute sapphic romance. The execution falls short with just the lack of space for the story. Things happen far too quickly when there are many scenes that really need space to breathe. It affects the tension and doesn't give much room for the side characters to show their personalities. The writing tends to tell instead of show, which may contribute to the rushed nature of this book. This book could have been quite good, but it ends up being somewhat mediocre.

recently spent some time in a storm drain underneath a Trader Joe’s - a thriving location for enjoyers of renegade art and freeform discourse; expressed through one of humanity’s most beloved and most ancient activities: writing on the walls of a cave. and let me say, this was one of the cleanest storm drains I’ve ever been in; a single mangled shopping cart was the only item that we noticed apart from the art. it’s probably about a half-mile stretch that’s centered around a full sized, 6 panel yellow-submarine mural beneath a manhole — also includes bad opinions and phallic imagery occasionally; which, when written out, sounds like the description of a regular art gallery.

more pics otw, mostly abstract. tried to get a sense of the feeling down there without capturing anything directly — part of the fun of visiting a location like this is seeing the art, but if I were to show that art outside of its immediate context, it kinda loses the magic. spoils the adventure. so, in order to preserve the magic - and thus maintain the element that most often draws people into dungeons to experience art for themselves - all I can offer is an approximation. my friends, you have outgrown the need to merely touch grass. you must hop a fence and descend into the pits if you want to sate the thrill.

#The Absinthe Underground #aroaessidhe 2023 reads #I was super hyped for this book bc cover is beautiful and it promised lots of things i love but......execution does not live up to concept #For one the cover (plus the ‘romantasy’ pitch) reads as NA/Adult to me - but this is definitely on the younger end of YA. #The writing is very simple with a lot of telling not showing and I think the marketing does it a disservice. more of a quest than a heist #It is definitely fast paced and easy to read and it’s sweet and fun! #It just has no real stakes or depth and I really think it had the potential for that. #arc formatting was a bit shit also. it's out now though #also just as an aside i saw the author on tiktok talking about how writing f/f in 3rd person hard because they both have she pronouns #so she split it into 2 POVs……..both povs are still in 3rd person?????? #what are you talking about that doesn’t solve the problem (and also is it really that big of a problem.)
