I have been writing for almost 20 years. I got my college degree in English and the only reason my specialization wasn't creative writing is because I had bad time management skills and missed my chance to do my final creative writing workshop. I'm autistic and Storycrafting and Wordsmithing are my special interests. I understand writing pretty well.

AFTG opened my fucking eyes to a blind spot of the utter craftsmanship of writing sticky characters that infect you with brain worms, and here it is:

The Conflict of Material and Form

AKA the Character Creation version of Nature versus Nurture

"This isn't who I truly am. This is who I've had to become, what I've had to fashion myself into to survive. The original me is buried in there somewhere, if only you knew how to look. If only you knew to look beyond the mask."

Easily exemplified with our fave lil guys-

Neil Abram Josten:

Material: smartass with a smart mouth, attitude problem, cares about people deeply, sharp tongue to cut a bitch with, kinda feral, a lil unhinged, oblivious idiot

Form: quiet and hidden, liar liar pants of fire, run rabbit run, docile and tame, hyper-vigilant and hyper-observant

Andrew Joseph Minyard:

Material: caring, protective, strong sense of justice, gentle even, cares deeply, give me sugar or give me death, yearning

Form: cold, apathetic, ruthless and unforgiving, allow me to introduce you to my knife, regret? don't know her, i want nothing nothing nothing

Why am I using 'material and form' instead of 'nature and nurture'? Because I am a subscriber to "Characters are not meant to be real people; they are mirages of real people meant to encapsulate a function or idea that serves the story". But use whatever terms click with your noggin.

This isn't about 'want vs need'. This isn't about 'lie believed and truth learned'. This is about Presentation and Basic Action - how would this character react here? Which part are they reacting from?

With Material vs. Form, one isn't the 'true' version and the other the 'false' version of the character. They are both true and real in their own right. The Secret Sauce is that the Material and the Form fight 1v1! And regardless of which part wins, there will be consequences and rewards; so which rewards do we want and which consequences are we willing to suffer? And this fight happens beat by beat, scene by scene, plot point by plot point.

At one point in TFC Neil laments his inability to shut his fucking mouth because his Form of 'don't stand out dipshit' and his Material of 'initiate smartass.exe' are disagreeing with how to respond to his circumstances! It's that fucking meme "My healed and unhealed versions of myself deciding who is going to handle this situation" but as Storycraft!

Now, I don't think this is a new idea by any means. But sometimes to make the essence of an idea truly stick, it must be presented in multiple different ways until one triggers a "Eureka! By Jove! Aha!", and this was the way that truly made this concept stick for me. And why did it stick? Because AFTG is a labor of deep love and passion for Characters and all their complexity and inner machinations, and that depth of devotion had to manifest as some good ass writing somehow my homies in christ.

I AM SORRY FOR TAKING SO LONG RAHHHH I got the notif, forgor, got another ask for this like a day ago, forgot again, and finally check my inbox today lmao you asked the perfect amount of questions no worries!!

General:

1. My favorite prisoner? It really is Mikoto I cannot tell a lie 😭 why? He's just... So heartbreakingly earnest. And when I was on Milgram Twitter back in 2021 I really didn't want his story to be a DID story. I wasn't about to discuss that stuff on a pretty public account no matter how intrigued we were. However, as time went on, and we thought about how all the other prisoners are "mentally ill" in some form or another, we held out hope that the whole "DID murderer who doesn't remember" thing would be subverted in some way. We came to really really look forward to his second trial, and after Purge March even moreso. In our opinion, Milgram team fuckin DELIVERED when Oct. 25th came around. While I personally relate more to John, Mikoto's story and how it's being told are very important to me. The extreme ambiguity of it all makes it better honestly; it's strikingly realistic in that sense. A host who has no idea what's going on or how to deal with it, in a boat with a bunch of presumable singlets who feel the same way, strikes a chord that few other medias have. Plurality is a very difficult topic to do justice, but I think Mikoto's narrative is very humanizing.

3. Favorite headcanon has gotta be the sibling-type relationships, particularly Amane and Fuuta. I love the idea of them stirring up trouble together. Trans headcanons are also my favorite anything ever (transmasc Fuuta and Mikoto/John and nonbinary Amane are my personal favs but transfemme!Fuuta, transfemme!Kazui and other trans headcanons are all GOATed imo)

6. RAHHHHHHH DIFFICULT favorite MV? siiiigh it probably is MeMe. Surprise tone-shift? Check. Tarot motif? Check. THE CRIME IN BRUTAL DETAIL? Check. Lyrics go crazy. Color palette goes crazy. Outfits go crazy. Although I will say "I Love You" is criminally underrated and provocative. Also LOVVVVED Harrow, Tear Drop, INMF, Purge March and Deep Cover. It's so hard to pick!!

7. Who I would get along with? Ironically, probably Fuuta. I think I would put up with his gruff attitude better than most, and we'd probably have similar worldviews regarding justice and the systems in place in society. I've been in similar (thankfully less serious) positions regarding his murder. We both enjoy video games and ramen lol he's still a little shit tho. I also feel like Yuno and I have very similar worldviews and would get along just fine.

Prisoners:

1. What do I think of Amane? Easily one of my favorites. Why? SHE IS SO REAL THAT'S WHY. She's thoroughly heartbreakingly indoctrinated but STILL trusts herself enough to do what's in her best interest in protecting herself. She denies herself so much joy to honor her devotions, even though I'm almost sure she will come to realize that the only "god" looking out for her is her. She just wants everyone to have the "heaven" of infinite happiness she's been promised, and doesn't yet understand that it's something one must make for themselves and that no one can see and know her every move and judge her like that.

3. Amane's first verdict was cruel, but I understand why it happened. Magic's very vague about who she killed and it seemed like she did it simply because the doctrine said to. It was almost like she'd been manipulated into doing it and didn't feel bad at all. When really, she was just joyous that she got to punish her abuser for once, using the rules THEY told her; not the other way around. I still do regret voting "unforgiven," personally. Her second verdict though? Based. I was in the trenches w y'all for that shit. Purge March my beloved. She had every right to punish someone who would torture a child and I don't see how Kotoko doesn't get that??? Amane inno sweep all the way they better treat my girl RIGHT from now on.

4. What do I wish people understood more about Mikoto? Woooo boy. How do I word this.

In the fandom: Mikoto is just a host alter - he's as capable of being mean and aggressive as John is capable of being nice. And his response to John and anger towards the protector is as natural as it is unfair. He's not immune to being a flawed human and deals with stress very differently from John despite sharing a body. Mikoto's denial keeps him going along "normally," but it's doubtless that "he," Mikoto, is truly the responsible one for the crime (as hosts often are the ones making big decisions). And idk, people seem to understand overall?? But there still seems to be confusion sometimes, about how John isn't "just" a protector, but a completely separate person/ego state. Neither one is the "main" alter, or a "nicer"/"better" alter. They're rounded people like the rest of the prison.

In-universe: I wish they understood him and John. I wish they knew he switched sometimes, and that though they're different they aren't dangerous just by virtue of being like that. I wish Mikoto wouldn't shame himself for not "measuring up," and accept himself and what he's done. But we're going to superhell so idk about that.

What’s a hobby they used to have that they miss?

Even before he lost everything, Duo didn't really have much time for hobbies. Still, he and his brothers used to play a kind of sport in their free time. I haven't really figured out the rules of the game yet or what it's called, but it involves throwing a Justice-infused space rock (or ball of compacted scrap metal) around a spherical 'court' out in space. I'm thinking it may have been one team trying to throw the asteroid out of the court, while the other is trying to keep it in. It also would have been a traditional part of the game to do elaborate flips and spins while throwing or catching.

I think that the game would also be a bit mind-bending to participate in, since Duo's kind don't perceive up & down like we do.

Even though Duo has a lot of fond memories with this game, I don't think he'd be able to bring himself to try and play it again. It probably won't even work without other Astrean Guards anyways.

Dwelling on these memories too long would probably make him cry.

When do they fake a smile? How often?

To be honest, I don't think Duo would be the type to fake a smile. He's a pretty genuine person, so he doesn't pretend to be happy when he's not.

He still tends to hide his sadness from other people though. He doesn't want to burden them with his emotional baggage... unless they show him they're willing to hear his plight that is.

When do they feel the most guilt? How do they respond to it?

This one's kinda tough. Duo doesn't have very many regrets since most of his actions are justified. He tends to use the Justice Energy inside his heart as his compass when he's unsure of what the right choice is. Though... there are still some situations too grey for his Energy to have a response.

Also, guilt tends to come from wrongdoing, and if Duo ever does something bad, it actually kills some of his Justice Energy - which is essentially his lifeblood. He has to be careful about the choices he makes.

Still... I think something that makes him feel really guilty without being inherently "immoral" is accidental property damage. It can be hard to get him to stop apologizing afterward, even if the object in question wasn't even that valuable or important. He'll likely insist on trying to make it up to the owner somehow.

I'm still not entirely sure why he gets so worked up, but there might be a couple reasons.

He's supposed to be an agent of justice and order, so doing anything that kinda contradicts that purpose is somewhat distressing. The other reason might be that he can't easily 'fix' an inanimate object. If he steps in a bush, he might be able to save it by emitting healing waves from his left hand, but a picket fence? He can't just piece that back together with only his own two hands.

i've never regretted playing a pokemon game though, i even had a great time with pokemon sword, which has to be the most lazy and unpolished AAA game i've ever touched (thankfully never played FO76)

In the one Christen Haydensen movie "Jumper", there was a northern guy who played xbox and had an incredibly thick accent and was super rude so we sometimes imitate his voice too. At the same time as the Last Witch Hunter meme. See above.

As for Loobaloobi, every time there is a black cat with wide eyes it's either a Cheesoid (my cat) or a Tipsy. If there's a... tall thing with four legs that can pass as a dog, it's a Fiesta (Mifil's dog).

Younger Tipsy (aka icanhascheezeburger) was so amped up and upset all the time. She was targeted greatly at school and basically everyone knew her name. She wanted to fight so bad, but couldn’t throw a punch to save her life. She had a strong sense of justice, and was condescending as fuck to those she thought had wrong opinions. She walked out of school a lot, but at some point after months of no school, decided to go back and hunker down until finishing. She never did her homework and she drew all over her notes, and when she got into Adventure Time, she drew Adventure Time all over the notes instead of Dragonball Z.

University! Tipsy, aka the sometipsygnostalgic that made this blog in 2015, she realised that even if everyone around you is nice, they are still hard to be friends with. That fucked her up. And she was an anxious wreck because university was hard to pay attention to, she was lonely in halls, and then went into an unfortunate cycle at home. So yeah in my early 20s I was no longer overconfident, instead I sort of became a mess that apologised for existing.

Present Day Tipsy knows a lot more about boundaries and how to be nice to other people but also has retained much of the nerdiness of Baby Tipsy and Uni Tipsy. So in many ways I'm the same but in other ways I'm glad my wisdom stat has gone up so much, it was basically Zero back then, and now I know how people are supposed to treat each other.

23. Describe the physical environment in which you write. Be as detailed as possible. Tell me what’s around you as you work. Paint me a picture.

Ooo, now, the difficulty here is, where is my usual writing spot or where do I tend to actually accomplish any significant writing? Most common writing place is at home, of course, at the desk in my bedroom, which is also my office space. It's a fairly large desk, with bookshelves my Dad added on that go all the way up to the ceiling. Basement bedroom, so not a whole lot of natural light most of the time, but given that I write most at night... XD

For really getting a good chunk of writing done, though? Coffee shop or other not-home place I'm going for the Specific Purpose Of Writing tends to be by far the best. Any distraction from ambient noise and activity is far outweighed by being in a different environment + plus the sense of deadline involved in having gone to some trouble to set aside this time and needing to focus to make the most of it.

26. How do you get into your character’s head? How do you get out? Do you ever regret going in there in the first place?

If it's fanfiction, often (re)reading some favorite fics to get me in the mindset of the kind of characterization that I want. Original characters, well, rereading my own writing mainly, to refresh exactly what the emotional tone was and how I want to build on or shift that.

I know for a lot of people playlists are a big thing, but I don't super often come across songs that actually remind me of my own characters? I do have some standby favorites, though, that can be good for getting in the right headspace.

As far as regrets... not exactly? Though there have definitely been a few times when the intensity/tone of what I was writing and where characters were at mixed in a bad way with my own emotional state at that point, so I do have to watch out with both reading and writing for which things may be cathartic versus just encouraging a spiral. :P

27. Who is the most stressful character you’ve ever written? Why?

Hmm, I'd say villains/antagonists in general are really hard for me? I instinctively want to lean toward an almost more campy/OTT style sometimes because I flinch back from trying to write a genuinely scary/intimidating/nasty villain and fearing that I'm not succeeding. So it's definitely been a really stressful part of my current book in particular, trying to figure out how to set up and properly balance the big bad.

39. What keeps you writing when you feel like giving up?

Honestly? Yes, there's definitely internal motivation as far as wanting to do these ideas justice and bring things into a tangible form. But when it comes to believing that I can and that that effort is worthwhile, awesome friends who've taken an interest and assured me that I'm not the only one in the world who things these are cool ideas (in which case I could just content myself with daydreaming and leave it at that, lol) have been a huge part of continuing to come back after those phases where I've contemplated giving up,

hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff

best quality: Objectively? Dick is really, really good at people. Like- Even leaving aside that he's funny and charming, he's been described as the linchpin of not just the Batfamily, but the entire superhero community. He's a really good leader and big-brother-mentor figure, he's great at staying friends with people and keeping a community together. He's astonishingly multi-talented, sure, but his people skills are really phenomenal, and I always get distressed when a piece of media doesn't give him his due in this area in particular.

worst quality: I mean...the thing is, Dick isn't long on what you'd call fatal flaws. A lot of writing outside the Bat-books tends to portray him as sharing Bruce's issue with being excessively driven, perfectionistic and manipulative, but that's rarely to be seen in the Bat-books...granted, often because the rest of the family are worse about it than he is. I'd honestly call this an issue from a writing perspective, because I haven't read many stories that give Dick a distinct fatal flaw of his own that works with his broader characterisation. Yes, okay, this is an issue with comics in general and the nature of having so many writers at the table at once, but...yeah, can't really think of a consistent 'worst quality' for Dick that isn't a writer trying to give him Bruce's failings in a toned-down form to a degree we don't see in Batfamily books.

ship them with: Barbara Gordon. Not that I don't love Starfire dearly, but Dick and Babs are just...they just work for me, and I eternally regret that the 'no Batfamily member can ever have a happy personal life' rule keeps keeping them apart.

brotp them with: Wally West. They just...work. I enjoy their dynamic, they play off each other well...kinda wish more adaptations put this front and centre the way Young Justice did, honestly.

needs to stay away from: Tarantula, Mirage, Deathstroke - basically anyone with molester vibes or who has actually sexually assaulted him.

misc. thoughts: I love Dick as a character, but he often reads as a very different person based on who he's with, and not in the same way anyone's behaviour changes in company. Like, in the Batfamily books, he's often the most emotionally balanced person in the room, the one who has his shit together. In his own books, this is less the case, and in team books, he often ends up as Bats' junior counterpart, with all the attendant issues, which goes against his characterisation of being the best leader/people person in the DCU by bringing in the Batman tendency to manipulate people and use them as pawns. Like, I'm not saying these qualities are mutually exclusive, but writers don't often do the work of reconciling how all of these qualities can coexist, which leads to a somewhat jarring feeling when following Dick's career.

Merrill

hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff

best quality: Merrill is one of the smartest people in Thedas. I am not even kidding. She managed to purge an Eluvian of the Blight, something we never hear of anyone else ever being able to do. Sure, she used blood magic and demonic help, but the fact remains that this is an astonishing achievement, and she did it on the move, in the face of the disapproval of her whole community. Merrill is one of the most brilliant people in the whole series, and it is a crime she wasn’t the Inquisition’s Eluvian expert.

worst quality: She does have a bit of a tendency to hyperfocus on Dalish issues. Which is very fair, the Dalish are facing an absolutely awful situation, but she is shown to disregard city elves, and to harbour some prejudices against elf-blooded people that are never fully unpacked. However, unlike basically every other character in DA2, she is allowed to grow through this and ends up working to protect the alienage community, so...still head and shoulders ahead of everyone else.

ship them with: Both Isabela and Bethany Hawke. Isabela is her canonical best friend, and one of the few people to be absolutely and entirely supportive of Merrill throughout the game. Bethany...well, despite the game claiming they don't get on, this is never really borne out in banter or cutscenes - Merrill is even one of the few people able to get Bethany to admit that there are things she might want more than to get to live as a non-mage and thus not have to hide all the time - and honestly I just think they'd be cute together.

brotp them with: I just really, really need her to meet and befriend Sigrun from Awakening. They’re both cheerful, sweet, friendly and often treated as immature for it by the fandom despite being grown adults with worldy experience, they both like learning about the world and are fairly open-minded, and I think they’d get along very well and have very interesting conversations.

needs to stay away from: Until they both do a lot of working on themselves and their biases and stop taking their shit out on Merrill, Fenris and Anders. I do think they are capable of this sort of personal growth, to be clear, but until they actually get there and engage in it, I do not want either of them near Merrill and prefer to avoid having them in the same party because some of their banters with her are just vile.

misc. thoughts: I love Merrill. I adore her. And I absolutely hate that the wider fandom often treats her like a child or an idiot when she’s one of the cleverest, most determined and most misunderstood characters in the whole series. She also absolutely deserved that ‘eluvian expert’ spot, and I would have absolutely loved to see her again. Not that it wasn’t nice to see Morrigan again, but her portrayal in Inquisition did make it a lot harder to like her, given her approach to elven issues.

Even the nights are better

One of the biggest questions I am asking myself recently is: why is it that others don't suffer the consequences of their actions, but when I do the same actions, I suffer big time?

So I've been going through a very bad manic episode these past weeks, peppered with a relapse of my disordered drinking. It's become so bad my mom became a full believer in mental health (not that she didn't at all, well at the first time she wasn't). I returned to therapy again, and my first assignment is to do a values inventory five years after I did it the first time.

You know what, I got my answer. The answer is because I'm in the wrong place in the wrong time in the first place.

Based on my values inventory, I realized MORALS and HONESTY are my topmost values. Maybe this explains why I went crazy going to Poblacion and being around those people. Maybe this explains why I really don't want to stay in Bataan for the long-term.

If the people in Bataan who kept swindling my father would do the same shit here in Manila, they'll be floating on a river. In Bataan, they can get away with all that shit and my father has to accept he isn't gonna get justice because they run the place. We're nothing but the new people. I've seen it with my own eyes how you can never win with those people. My dad just chooses to remain blind.

If Jokjok did all her prostituting for rum coke in America, I wouldn't be surprised if she'd be in a True Crime documentary. But since she's doing it in Poblacion, she's like the belle of the ball. It's literally eat someone's dick or vagina or not be eaten there. In Poblacion, you don't go there to oh let's talk about how life has been treating us. You go there to get fucked, not appreciated.

And maybe this is why I'm going crazy at work. My values are not anymore aligned with what I do. WE'LL SAVE THAT FOR TOMORROW!

Introspecting on things these past days, I think that it's important to really have your values. REALLY IMPORTANT. I think I'm going crazy lately because I've allowed the white noise to take over my values. I'm letting the external voices tell me what I should do. I'm not listening to what really matters to me.

I'll be honest, values won't feed me. Values won't buy me that ticket to Nice. Values won't pay for my electricity or bills. I might even lose a lot following my values. But the most important thing is, I won't lose myself.

With my values, I'll be making decisions I won't regret. People can say, oh just work only for the money, don't give a damn. But again, I value my morals, relationships, and honesty. I don't wanna be a shell of my former self and not be honest about it, to the point of developing severe resentment.

With my values, I know how to set boundaries and not let people step on me and gaslight me. Especially in Filipino culture, where you are expected to care for your parents because "they made you" even if you have seven kids and seven grandkids. I've seen it a lot where parents take advantage of this "value" to encumber and manipulate their children while not being responsible for their decisions themselves: engaging in gambling, getting into substance abuse, mishandling finances to the point of debt, being an abusive parent in the first place. And here are people on Facebook, sharing memes like "My children, if I get senile don't be tired of embracing me" and debating on whether adult children ARE OBLIGATED to care for their parents or not. DON'T GET IT TWISTED!

Looking back, maybe that's why I have never been a conformist. I've never been "cookie cutter" you know? I don't look like the typical XYZ; I'll often be the outlier. Ever since I was young, I have strongly valued my uniqueness. To this day, I value being unique. My friends, everyone I meet knows that there'll never be another Franz. Once you meet Franz you'll never find anyone else like me.

Maybe that's why I am going crazy, because I see the BIG CONFLICT with my values. And is it my fault to have these values? Maybe yes, but that's because we got it twisted. We make the right thing unpopular and normalized the things that strip us of our values.

There had been many times in which Timur hadn't been sure of where he wanted his life to go, or what he wanted to do. This had also effected Zarja. He'd broken up with her, left her hurt, all because he didn't know where he wanted to take his life. Not because he didn't love her, because he did. Then life decided to take an unpredictable turn with his accident. By some lucky oversight of his own, she had been there when he needed her the most. Did he deserve her? No. But he had her, and he was beyond grateful for it. He had never felt more grateful for having made a mistake than he did in that moment.

Since then, he had begun believing that fate had brought the two of them back together to rectify the mistake he'd questioned time and again after he'd made it. Letting her go, even if he'd done it in an attempt to give her a better life, he'd regretted that since he'd done it. There was no person who could have compared to her, no matter how they tried. Timur had made plenty of mistakes, and would continue to make more, but letting her go again? That was not going to be one of them. He'd learned from the first time, and he had every intention of seeing things through this time around. People were not often granted second chances, but he had been.

Looking at Zarja as they sat in companionable silence, his fingers playing with her long strands of hair as his gaze lazily ran over every feature of her face. "I think I want to marry you..." he muttered softly, "No... I know that I do. I think we should. Now. I don't see why we even need to wait, we should just do it. I know that nobody else will ever mean to me what you do."

This was how they found themselves in front of the Justice of the Peace. Reciting vows, and making promises to one another. Timur had never been so grateful for the fact that he had plenty of money to throw at things like an engagement ring, and wedding bands at the last minute. He didn't need anything fancy. His family would understand, Timur never did anything the traditional way. They would simply be glad that he found someone that he wanted for the rest of his life.

At the end of it all, his hands framed her face, a smile on his own as he kissed her lovingly. "My beautiful wife. You saved me. Now let me spoil you forever."

My Opinion on Lolirock Characters

(a request from SaraDarkees?)

So a friend of mine wants to know my opinion on Lolirock characters, so she provided this meme to me, and I am here to present it to her, as well as anyone else who is curious. I probably put too much thought into this, but at the same time, it's been over a year since I saw a Lolirock episode. It was when I did the episode reviews for season two. I also wanted to avoid duplicates; i.e. putting the same character for more than one category. Because there is no English version of it, so I will explain what each section means, starting from the top row, left to right.

Favorite character - Carissa's biggest flaw is not her character itself. Instead, it is how rarely she appears throughout the show. She appears in two episodes of season one and about five or six more times in season two. Because of this, I sometimes forget about her and end up replacing her spot (character ranking) with Praxina. Anyways, she raw energy that I find endearing, if not adorable. It's the reason why I appreciate the episode "Amaru-niverse." She also has a unique character design, with red hair, but blue eyes. More importantly, she has a youthful, passionate determination in becoming a stronger warrior, which causes her to irresponsibly sneak into the magic library and split Amaru into three different versions. She however, instantly regrets it and rectifies her mistake. If Carissa had appeared more often, I guarantee that more people will like her like I do. Also, read my fanfic on her if you want more action from her.

Character that everyone else likes, except me - My main issue with Lev is how the season one finale hints that he will play a larger role in the next season. Come season two, he only appears for two episodes. I'm surprised he has a fanbase, especially when he has less appearances than Lyna, someone that fans generally pair him with. Don't be surprised if he pops up again for season three, because it will be surprising if he doesn't.

Character that I did not like at first - Perhaps this will be my second-most controversial opinion, but I think his second episode does him some justice, which is why I wrote a positive review for it, and why this section is specifically meant for him. His debut episode set such a terrible first impression that even the writers/creators don't like it; but "Rex" did a better job of pairing someone with Talia, perhaps even better than I did.

Character that I would like to learn more about - Lyna has two major episodes in season two, and the first one doesn't really count. She might be cute as a doll, but we have virtually no info on who she is. This may be the reason why I wrote "Gareth and Leslie."

A character that I dislike - Amaru looks suspiciously similar to Kiko from Winx Club. Putting this aside, I just don't care about him. I'm sure that other Lolirock fans do, but he does not contribute all that much to the show, except for summon the arena. Even then, I have also criticized the arena.

A character with good character design, but poor personality - This one is easy. Iris is physically attractive, but terribly boring as a protagonist. Her predominant character trait is being friendly and helpful. This is all there is to her, and her very own catchphrase is the intro quotes for my reviews of season one and season two. I literally don't know anything else about Iris, and she is a Mary Su. She is the most powerful character of the show despite having less experience with magic than every single one of her friends, who have used magic for much longer than she has. While Raf from Angel's Friends might be horribly nasty as a character, she has more personality than Iris. And while people dislike Rose from Regal Academy, I guarantee you that even Rose's critics will admit she is better as a character than Iris.

A character with good personality, but bad character design - The text you see is the Russian word for "what?" I don't think any character from Lolirock is designed badly. I was going to put Aunt Ellen in this section, but I don't think it's fair. Because she functions as Iris' legal guardian, she was purposely designed to look maternal, as in, bigger than her. Even then, despite being old, she is still cute.

A character I am similar to - Another easy choice. I have constantly been described as intelligent, much like how others describe Talia. I also share Iris' helpfulness and friendliness

A pairing (or ship) that I love - Stick around for this one. I will reveal this later in the form of an image

A pairing that I do not love - How Talisto became the most popular ship in the fandom is still a mystery. I speculate it's due to how their personalities are direct opposites; Talia is mature and smart, and Mephisto needs her to balance out his wacky, immature self. That being said, any moment they have on the show is seldom, and hostile.

A character I would be friends with in real-life - There are too many characters that I could place here, so I decided to pick the one I think would be easiest to befriend. As much as I don't think Debra should become an official member of Lolirock (as some fans have done), she is still my favorite secondary character. Aside from an eye-catching character design, she is also an artist, and I assume a decent one at that. She must also be lonely in the mansion, so I don't think she would mind teaching me how to paint. And fun fact, people like to steal her underwear, and her grandfather is dating her.

A character I would not be friends with in real-life - This is also a no-brainer, because Missy is specifically designed to be the girl bully of the show, someone who takes pleasure in mocking, taunting, and deriding others for her own amusement. Is there anything else I have to say?

Hi! I thought I should return the favor with your writing ask meme. I'm not entirely sure what you have or haven't answered so far, so for one of your OCs and the fic they appear in, would you do Pen, Marker, Persistence of Memory, and Girl with a Pearl Earring? Thanks!

ahh thank you so much!! I really appreciate it! You'd be surprised at how many people reblog the ask game but don't actually send the reblog-courtesy ask, even when I send them an ask for it.

I think for this one I'm gonna go with Rae for this one, since she doesn't usually get the limelight for these ask games and things. Since you did the same for me, I'll give you a quick character bio to help you out:

Rachel ("Rae") Ayla McKinney: 25 years old, Scottish, female, largely straight but a little bi-leaning (this takes place in 1983 so there's not quite as much open self-reflection on gender and sexuality y'know? still some, but not as much). 5'8", brown hair and blue-gray eyes. Her mutation is to generate shields made of pearlescent silver energy, and she has translucent silver veins running across her skin that glow when she engages her ability. Works as a translator and knows 6 languages. Very headstrong, outgoing, strong sense of justice that usually sends her running into fights she's unprepared for. Fiercely stubborn and protective of those she loves, which is both a boon and a bane to her at times.

Pen: what's one minor moment your character regrets? A small mistake, but something they "can't erase"?

Honestly? I feel like Rae has very few regrets as a whole. She doesn't really believe in fate, but she does believe that what's done is done, and prefers to live with and adapt to her choices rather than sit and wonder what could've been. Even the moments that she might regret on their own usually lead to things she'd never take back in the future.

For example, she might regret making her presence known in the warehouse because it resulted in her having her mutation forcibly expressed (which was incredibly painful, and resulted in a complete shift in her life), but without her shields, there would be dozens of people that she wouldn't have saved (including herself and her romantic partner).

I do think she regrets not officially learning to fight earlier in her life. She ends up running into a lot of fights because she can't stand to see someone get unjustly hurt, but it doesn't always end well for her because she only learns to fight at age 24. I think she would've liked to take a few boxing or self defense classes when she was younger, and it maybe would've given her more success in those impromptu rescues.

Marker: what's one thing your character would never tattoo on their body, even if they were paid a million dollars for it?

I'm not sure how well her mutation-markings would handle a tattoo, actually. They're flush to the skin, but have a slightly different texture, and then there's the matter of them lighting up when she engages her ability. I think it would be a little like tattooing over a scar, I'm not sure it would turn out well. So any tattoo she gets would have to navigate around them, for one.

Honestly, I've been thinking hard about this, and I'm really not sure what else to say. I don't picture Rae as someone who wants tattoos at all really, and if she did, she'd certainly be the type to think long and hard about what she wants instead of rushing into it. Sorry I don't have more of an answer for this one.

Persistence of Memory: are there any moments in this work where a character's memory plays a strong role? Either an individual memory, or simply a character's ability to recall the past.

So, this is an X-Men fic, and it centers a lot around my boy Warren Worthington. Memory plays a huge role in his recovery after being made the Horseman of Death, since he ends up with some memory issues in the aftermath of it. Lost memories, lapses in memories (i.e. moments of confusion where he thinks it's pre-Apocalypse), and the telepathic use of calming memories when he has a night terror or something similar. I wouldn't say this is my fic most revolving around memory (I think Desert Song takes the cake for that one), but it certainly plays a prevalent role.

Girl With a Pearl Earring: are there any moments in this work where a character's clothing or accessories play a major role?

Oh, certainly. I don't know if there's anything plot-defining that relates to clothing or accessories, but there's definitely some notable details. Rae wears Warren's leather jacket during all the time he's captured/brainwashed by Apocalypse and they're apart (which is also when she has to learn how to adapt to her mutation), and it becomes almost like a talisman to her. She never lets it go, not until he's returned and recovered.

And then later, after things have calmed down, she receives a necklace from him as a birthday gift: a small steel feather on a leather chain. It really symbolizes what they've gone through over the course of the story, and it's also like she's holding a piece of him over her heart (it's not actually one of his feathers, just a necklace from a craft market, but the symbolism is there)

Finally, I haven't written this bit yet but I just really like this detail: Rae doesn't wear rings. Her sister is a nurse, and as a result she's heard far too many stories of people getting degloved by their rings in an accident. So when she gets married, she keeps her wedding ring on a chain around her neck instead of wearing it as a ring. Warren even has it placed on a chain for her when he proposes, since he knows she doesn't wear rings.

"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA" is another fanfic of a fanfic wodjsodnskdnsdk. i came across this fic on ao3 where stan wound up hosting a late night talk show, and ford finds it in the deepest depths of his paranoia, and after a while of listening and clinging to the one stable thing he has left, ford calls in and they have a heartwrenching heart-to-heart on the airwaves. the idea came from somewhere on tumblr that might've been st*nc*sty, unfortunately, however i'm stealing it for all of us in the anti-inc*st crew >:) i wanted to try giving a mostly-dialogue writing style a try, and, well…
