Yes: me.

2. When was the last time you cried?

Maybe a few weeks ago, when I was feeling a little tired and overwhelmed?

Yes, I have a kiddo--but my kiddo is not so smol anymore...And now I might have to go back and edit question 2.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

See question 3. We are all fluent in sarcasm chez the Nothings.

5. What sports do you play/have played?

A martial art.

6. What's the first thing you notice about other people?

Their eyes. And then? How they treat waitstaff, customer service peeps, custodians, children, and animals. It's a tried and true yardstick to identify asshats.

If the story is good, doesn't matter.

9. Any special talents?

9 times out of 10 I will get an amazing parking spot in a crowded or unlikely place (the downside is that I am always, always, in the slowest lane in traffic- I'm ok with that cosmic balance).

Reading, gaming, crafting (this last one, very enthusiastically but only just at a step up from glitter and macaroni collages), and baking, if you, uh, consider I've watched all of the Great British Baking Show...

15. Dream job?

Like, unrealistic? A fulltime writer. Realistic and attainable? I'm doing it now. A few years ago I quit a cutthroat job to pursue this. It's hard, tiring, but so very rewarding and meaningful, and I am grateful every day that I can do it.

I have had a kid and am raising a kid. They are not the same kid.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Excessively.

5. What sports do you play/have you played?

I did karate as a kid? Never went very far with it, mostly bc that's when my knee started doing cartwheels all on its own.

6. What's the first thing you notice about other people?

Usually just their tone. I have a tendency to read rudeness where there isn't any, it's honestly an issue.

7. Eye color?

Grey/green.

8. Scary movies or happy endings?

I cannot do scary movies bc of the Brain Gremlins, I much prefer a happy ending. Or at least bittersweet.

9. Any special talents?

I guess my writing? I've been doing that for a long, long time tho, it probably counts more as a honed skill at this point.

Just outside Atlanta, Georgia.

Writing, art, graphics, video games.

Six cats: Piper, Callie, Hancock, Gigi, Rinzler, TC. Piper's the only one who's technically "mine", the others belong to the rest of the household. (TC and Callie are kind of Everybody's Cats by virtue of only barely tolerating any of us.)

14. Fave subject in school?

Literally any of my literature classes. I had a fondness for my Honors and AP history classes as well, but I lost those when we moved.

I'd honestly love to be able to write for a living.

1. What other creative arts do you partake in, if any?

I try to draw as much as possible? Mostly OCs. I’d like to do theatre as well.

Does singing out of tune in the shower count?

2. Did you study writing formally, or is it a side passion?

It’s more of a passion, but I’ve taken courses in an association and sometimes in school we’d do creative writing. Also, I study literature so... technically it’s writing (no shit)

3. What authors made a big impression on you? Why?

Uh. Pierre Bottero for so many reasons I can’t list. Mostly for his poetic style and unbounded imagination. Also for his badass 3D characters.

Alessandro Baricco. If I can one day write like he does (or did, I haven’t read his latest novels) then I can die at peace.

4. Have you ever collaborated with someone on a project? What was it?

Haha 2/3 of what I do are born from collaborations. Mostly mixing OCs.

Basically we had this sort of OC rp we did were we would start with what-OC-Where-When-Why and then just go on and on into character and situation development. It became a whole narrative/AU in itself.

Among other things.

5. What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as the genre you write?

I love fantasy and YA novels. But mostly the not too popular ones? Except PJO haha

Tbh I can read about anything as long as the first fifty pages get me going hard. I’m terrible at finishing books because most of the time I get bored really fast (I know, I’m awful). So if either the style or the story or the characters or all of it catch my attention then I’m full in.

It’s sort of different from what I write because I write a lot of cheesy YA stuff. I like to think that when I’ll have more time I’ll be able to write something more mature (I kind of really want to), hopefully in French. I want to try writing in French again.

6. Do you outline?

Like a madwoman. Let’s be honest: 98% of the time I outline as precisely as possible and then I’m like “why isn’t this writing itself. WRITE YOURSELF”

But I do like to know where I’m going because I have to write in a chronological order. As in, from the beginning. I can’t write as a puzzle.

7. Do you snack while you write?

Mhm depends? I like to eat before or after because it’s not practical (I only have two hands). Drinking is okay though.

8. If given the choice, do you prefer writing indoors or outdoors?

Indoors is more comfortable, but it can be indoors as in a coffee shop or someone else’s house if I’m inspired enough.

9. How do you deal with Writer’s Block?

What is writing?

I get really frustrated and think about all those things I could be writing but prefer staring at my wall. I just wait for it to pass I guess.

10. Do you participate in online writing events like NaNoWriMo?

People have the time to participate in this? The energy?

I totally don’t??? I used to do friendly thematic online competition but now I write mostly for myself and for my friends. I also TOTALLY want to finish my ongoing fanfiction, I just have no time ;_;

Rec: Another fabulously written fic with a (currently, inexplicably) low kudo count, this is a masterful update of the eponymous ACD canon case coupled with an angsty recent relationship update between Sherlock and John. It’s exciting, juicy, sexy, insightful, sensual, and just a little heartbreaking (but only a little). The OCs (including Harry Watson in a cameo appearence) are brash and memorable; the mystery is both psychologically gripping, physically challenging, and even for those who know the canon story, stubbornly puzzling. And of course the bass accompaniment thrumming throughout it all, Sherlock and John’s intense push-me-pull-you relationship, brilliantly rendered in exquisite details that had me wallowing and luxuriating for days.

The author mentions greywash as one of their fandom author influences, and I can see that in here along with hints of ivyblossom and wordstrings, so if any of those names mean anything to you then you will understand what I am talking about with the quality of this, as well as the general tendency toward introspection, thinky thoughts, and fairly hypnotic stream-of-consciousness narration.

Although this was posted almost entirely after series 4 aired, it is canon divergent after series 2. It does incorporate various elements of series 3 and 4, though, sometimes as inside-joke “Easter Eggs” and sometimes in more substantial ways that I thought were quite clever and natural to the story. (Don’t worry, no Rosie!) This is also part 3 of a series, although I didn’t read the first two parts and got along swimmingly.

Look behind you. What do you see? My laundry basket, pushed up beside my bookshelf, as well as a copy of The Art of Dragon Age: Inquisition lying on the floor beside it.

What is the last animal you saw? Describe it to me! A pigeon with a thousand-yard stare strutting along in the parking lot beside my apartment building. It’s likely “decorating” my windowsill as we speak.

What is the most loyal object you own? Loyal is a trait I’d sooner ascribe to living creatures moreso than the inanimate, but I’ve been using the same Wacom tablet for the last ten years. Impressive for a piece of hardware. I’ve begun to suspect that it’ll outlive me.

Do you prefer to walk or to take the transports? If the weather is agreeable and the surroundings tolerable, I’d sooner walk.

What kind of pie are you? Pumpkin. Fall is when I’m at my best, and the closer to Halloween we are, the more I grin.

What movie would you recommend to me? Mm, Pan’s Labyrinth was most impressive, both on a story and visual front. Most fantasy films are pretty crappy, but when you find a gem, you find a gem. This one is one of those. I’ve mentally shuffled it onto my list of nostalgic movies, and I was an adult when I first saw it. Few films have that claim. Watch Pan’s Labyrinth.

Droppin’ Science - Un tonton te cause #05 by Tar One

This Is The Life (sur Netflix)

Des semaines que je l’avais ajouté à ma liste Netflix négligemment, parce que ça parle de Hip Hop et que j’aime voir à peu près tout ce qui se fait sur le sujet, parce que j’avais aperçu quelques blazes familiers… Dans ces moments où tu es las et indécis, à chercher un truc à mater sans réussir à savoir dans quelle humeur tu es et ce qui te procurerait un peu d’intérêt, j’avais nié et nié encore. Comme 50 autres trucs potentiellement intéressants, divertissants voir passionnants. Quand trop de choix tue le choix. Drôle d’époque…

La brève description ne mettait pas trop en confiance : « Découvrez comment le groupe de hip-hop alternatif des Good Lifers a réussi à détourner l’emprise des gangs de Los Angeles en créant une véritable communauté artistique. » Aie. Alerte aux gros clichés. Les blazes cités rassuraient un peu : Abstract Rude, Chali2na et Cut Chemist (de Jurassic 5), Ellay Khule, Riddlore. Je ne connaissais pas les deux derniers. Les 3 premiers m’ont laissé deviner qu’on allait parler de cette scène californienne underground des 90’s que je connais assez mal parmi lesquels les mythiques et presque fameux Freestyle Fellowship dont j’ai découvert le classique Innercity Riots très tard. Je me souvenais également avoir été bluffé par leurs skillz surhumaines bien que pas super accessibles sur l’excellent docu Freestyle, The Art Of Rhyme dont je vous parlerai peut-être un de ces 4. On y voyait quelques images d’archive de ce fameux Good Life Café dont j’avais oublié le nom. Je connais quelques-uns des plus de 150 albums issus de cette scène, principalement choppés lors de mes digging sans fins de l’ère soulseek.

J’ai fini par daigner appuyer sur Play et j’ai pris ma grosse claque dans la gueule. Je ne rêve pas devant les grosses caisses et produits de luxe exhibés par tant de rappeurs US dans leurs clips, par contre voir des images de MCs qui se surpassent et chillent dans un petit spot qui ne paie pas de mine, ça me fait grave fantasmer et me rappelle un tout petit peu les bons moments passés au Baobab à Verviers quand on y organisait nos Open Mic mensuels. Ça ressemble pas mal à ce que je n’ose plus appeler « Real Hip Hop » tant cette appellation est devenue insupportable, galvaudée, un vieux poncif relou.

Ce docu nous montre donc les 5-6 années magiques d’un spot que rien ne prédestinait à l’être. Un magasin de bouffe bio un peu hippie sur les bords qui se transforme de 20 à 22h en lieu de Jams, le tout en plein South Central. Un jour Jazz, un jour Funk et grâce à la proposition d’une charismatique dame d’âge respectable, du Hip Hop pour offrir un espace à la jeunesse. Oser y croire, être prêt à le tenter et à gérer les problèmes que ça pourrait générer, faire appel au fiston passionné du genre. Quelques règles du jeu dont une bien américaine qu’on imagine mal être respectée par des Thugs du Hood (et pourtant ça a marché !) : ne pas dire de gros mots sous peine de se voir couper et confisquer le micro immédiatement ! Ça aurait pu être pris pour une contrainte moralisatrice, ça a finalement permis de repousser les limites de la créativité, de se prendre la tête pour convaincre par d’autres moyens. Les Gangstaz et les Pimps trouveront donc d’autres mots pour raconter leurs Ghetto Tales. Une autre interdiction suivra vite : celle d’être naze et les coupables de wackerie seront dégagés sans ménagement, qu’ils soient anonymes ou qu’ils soient Fat Joe et ses disques d’or.

Rapidement, quelques dizaines de MCs aux sensibilités et univers variés fréquentent le spot assidûment. Quelques incroyables talents (les vrais, pas ceux de la télé) aidant, une émulation hallucinante va les pousser à repousser sans cesse leurs limites et celles de l’art du emceeing en même temps, dans l’esprit du Jazz de certaines époques bénies des dieux. Flows élastiques, découpés, triturés, roulements supersoniques, mélodies, étirement de syllabes, délire cartoonesques avec l’excellence, la singularité ou la créativité comme valeurs cardinales. Tout ça au tout début des 90’s ! La foule à 99% noire (DJ Cut Chemist est pendant des années le seul blanc !) valide ou dégage. Après la sainte messe de deux heures, ça battle furieusement sur le parking et d’autres moments spontanés et magiques surgissent dans tous les coins.

Le docu date de 2008 et est réalisé par Ava Duvernay. Elle était membre du duo Figures Of Speech qui faisait partie intégrante de cette scène. Depuis, elle est devenue réalisatrice accomplie de documentaires et de films, notamment derrière 13th sur l’incarcération de masses aux USA (et dispo sur Netflix) ou le célèbre Selma racontant un épisode marquant des combats de Martin Luther King. Grâce à son implication totale dans le sujet dont elle traite, le docu brosse une très large galerie de personnages avec de nombreuses images d’archives et des entretiens postérieurs. Si on sent une certaine frustration ou tendance à gonfler les trop rares moments de gloire chez certains, la fierté, la douce nostalgie et l’amour priment. Il y a de nombreuses anecdotes truculentes et plein d’étoiles dans les yeux à l’évocation des grands moments. Ça transpire la passion, le talent et une intégrité sans faille. Même si à l’exception de Jurassic 5, aucun n’a vraiment connu les spotlights, beaucoup ont pu vivre ou vivent toujours grâce à la musique et bénéficient d’un certain culte, voyagent, développent, proposent des sorties de qualité. Leur influence souvent minimisée ne peut être contestée et se retrouve clairement dans l’ADN d’un gamin devenu roi issu du même coin : Kendrick Lamar.

Bref, une passionnante plongée dans une oasis épargnée par beaucoup de vices et vicissitudes inhérents au Rap Game, un royaume pour Losers Magnifiques où il faut tuer (dans le bon sens du terme) pour survivre. Il est possible de tout donner pour la beauté du geste, ces gars l’ont fait, certains continuent de le faire, tant pis pour la reconnaissance méritée. Sauf que miraculeusement, leur histoire est disponible sur le géant Netflix et miraculeusement, tu tombes sur cet article qui t’incitera je l’espère à daigner appuyer sur Play à ton tour.
