#attack on titan review
Text
Hi, and welcome :)
On hiatus due to exams
(Scroll down for my masterlist)
Tumblr media
This page is dedicated to reviewing all sorts of anime. I'll be talking about my opinions on characters/anime related topics and controversies too, but that will be less frequent than the reviews. I also often discuss LGBT* representation in anime, especially in regards to queer women
If you have a request, go here or message it to me privately :)
Important:
Before you interact with my content, there are a few things I need to establish. Firstly and most importantly, I do not tolerate hate of any sorts towards anyone, so if you discriminate, get off my page. Secondly, do not interact if you romanticise abuse of any sort. This is a safe space for everyone, and aside from those things I'm very chill.
Please bear in mind that my posts will contain spoilers, because I will talk about the characters/plots of specific anime (I won't give out major spoilers or speak about huge plot twists, it will be done in a similar style to a blurb in a book) so do not interact with my posts if that's a problem. If a certain anime deals with triggering or sensitive topics, I will put a trigger warning before I start talking about the plot and in the tags (if I remember), but let me know if I miss anything - I am always more than happy to correct my mistakes.
I'm happy to interact and answer asks, but spamming and hate will get you blocked
I don't reply to comments due to my glitchy Tumblr, but I read them and appreciate them greatly.
In the interest of keeping my reviews fair and accurate, I will only review anime I have watched at least a season of (please note - where this isn't possible, I will watch all available episodes) but I will not have watched all the anime I talk about until the end (it will be specified when this is the case).
How to navigate my posts
My posts will always contain the following:
Genre: (pretty straightforward, the genre of the anime in the way I interpret it, which could differ from the official one)
Where I watched the anime
A ranking out of 10 on characterization, originality, comfort, addictiveness, art style, setting, plot/storytelling, philosophy (if it made me think/learn something) and consistency (if the quality decreases as the show goes on, with lower ratings meaning it does)
A brief summary of the plot and mentions of the main characters, followed by a discussion on the strong/weak points of the anime
Any extras I think might be useful/interesting.

in this exposé i will
Isayama talks about his drawing in way too humble a fashion. but this is especially true when it comes to emotions and expressions - especially in aot where emotions and the nuances of character emotions are portrayed outside of dialogue.
but - especially wit - went about doing a disservice to Levi in particular when putting his character to screen. i don't think it's too controversial to say that most aot fans are anime onlys right? and it's much less controversial to remember the very bad take that throughout aot Levi is emotionless.
obviously, this is clear enough in the anime. but the manga really brings the emotional spectrum of his character to all new horizons. it's been stated by Isayama that Levi is the most emotional character in aot. and if you cross-examine scenes in the manga vs the anime, this is unmistakable.
so i want to give a few examples of where the anime - mostly wit - miss these nuances in Levi's show of emotions.
thank you to this person on twt for giving me this idea with examples!
i'll start with what i consider the greatest offender of all (from the moments on my mind for now):
right as Midnight Sun starts, Levi has just managed to get back to Wall to find that Zeke is escaping and Armin is half-dead. he failed in carrying out Erwin's order.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i mean WOW, right? in both, Levi looks exhausted yes, but in the manga he looks frantic. on the verge of tears almost.
this is going to be a trend, where the anime portrays Levi in a much more hardened and determined manner compared to, arguably, how he really is. i think that there's a balance that the manga depicts much more equally.
later, Floch is recounting how he found Erwin. he found him alive, and considered putting him out of his misery, but decided that Erwin didn't deserve mercy.
this scares the shit out of Levi - much, much more clearly in the manga. in the left 2, he looks afraid in both, but in the manga, that fright is just. so much more intense. you know how strong Levi's feelings are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
right after RtS, Levi and Hange have come to let Eren and Mikasa out of jail.
understandably, Levi is neck deep in mourning. not just Erwin, but every life that was sacrificed just so he could fail; the two veteran squads that died when Bert transformed; Moblit; and of course Hange was badly injured too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
his depression is TANGIBLE in the manga. the anime doesn't convey it as well... (if at all i would argue)
in season 3, when Kenny has given his speech about how everyone is a slave to their own vice, and he's just retorted to Levi, "what're you, a hero?!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
clearly in the manga, he's much more exasperated. his head is hanging more and he looks pleading instead of angry.
the anime didn't even include this panel.
Tumblr media
he feels sorry for him.
the attack on Liberio. Levi is cutting Zeke from his Titan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in the manga, it's so INTENSE. i'm sure he's experiencing the same exact feelings as he did 4 years before. this moment is supposed to be his triumph - when he completes his promise to Erwin. you can clearly see the longing and disappointment, but along with forced determination, because putting on a show of killing Zeke is torturous for him, but it's his duty.
(i posted about this earlier but) Levi has just cut Zeke out of his Titan and needs to put down a grenade in order to give the impression that Zeke is dead. then he notices Magath, but most importantly that two kids are directly below him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in the manga, his head is more downturned as opposed to above them, which is important in the scope of getting across that Levi doesn't see them (or Marleyans for that matter) as below him.
in the manga it's clear that he finds absolutely no satisfaction out of it, which is seen in the anime version too, but like i've said, not like Isayama gets it across.

Anime Review: Attack On Titan
Special episode 2 - The final
Tumblr media
May Contain Spoilers!!
These are my opinions
The final episode came out on November 4th and it was about an hour and a half long. I watched all the way till the very last second and I know some people were disappointed in the end, I can't say that i am. I actually thought the last episode was amazing, I mean the entire show is really amazing but I think the ending was perfect. So many people wanted Eren to win but I don't think that would've been a good ending. We see in the end sequence how war is inevitable, but that doesn't just mean Eren died for nothing. Eren achieved his goal in the end, his friends got to live and die in peace and he eradicated titans from their lives. Of course peace couldn't last forever though and thats what we see at the end, and Eren knew that. Also ive seen some people being confused about how Mikasa was able to free Yimir in the end. We find out that Ymir was in love with King Fritz, and by being so, she was enslaved to him. Now taking a look at Mikasa, also in love with Eren, Ymir saw this and saw how Mikasa was able to love Eren but make her own decisions and save humanity over him. Thats how Mikasa was able to free Ymir, she was able to do something Ymir couldn't.

Just finished watching the Attack on Titans' final episode, and boy, was it intense🫣 especially when Armin was yelling at himself to get up and fight😳💓🫢(it felt like my inner child was yelling at me😭)
I totally love Levi 's fighting spirit, though. He's always a badass!😎💪💓😍
Tumblr media
The whole series was extremely volatile and demented, with insurmountable odds to overcome😱🫣 it was an emotional rollercoaster, to say the least🎢 💞😵‍💫
I probably have PTSD now, but it was worth enduring the pain for an epic experience 🤕❤️‍🩹🙌
I don't know what else to say without spoiling too much, but the ending is tragically fitting😞🪦 and you wonder if there ever was such a thing like this in the distant past of our history🤔 (makes you wonder about giant footprints👣)😳
We're not always told the truth, and time has a way of changing things ⏳️🤷‍♀️
Anyway, I give it a 10, perfection🤌
It's one of my top favorite anime for sure💯🥇🙌

MHA 398
All Might is not right in the head. And I'm afraid Sir Nighteye's prediction is about to come true. He's truly doing everything for Deku and society. I'm worried. Live you old man!
Also love the flashback of Nana Shimura and All Might's first meeting. Also getting a glimpse of a truly devastated and cruel world before AllMight rose as the Symbol of Peace. I'm re-watching MHA right now. and on season 3. The climax of All Might vs All For One and just seeing how epic thi fight is becoming, I'm looking forward to it being animated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Got tears in my eyes when the vestige of All Might in OFA told Deku about All Might's fight. I don't want Deku to find out about All Might gravely injured or something worse like this.

I watched Attack On Titan season finale on Hulu (instead of crunchyroll :p) and without saying anything about spoilers, I was honestly surprised by within the awesome fight scene and sadness of seeing closing the final chapter.
In fact the series was all started with Wit studio of 2013 that ran longer than years with 3rd season to move to another place called MAPPA studio that ultimately picked up for 4th and possibly the finale season for last 3 years until today.
And most importantly as a fan of the series, I’m glad I was able to catch up with both anime and manga (but maybe few of them are yet to read along the way). And it does highly recommend and even find inspiration for my own style of art.
Speaking of which, both the series and the manga by Hajime Isayama is notable (as I said before) inspiration for my new art style that I have been working on for anatomy since 2013.
At first I was too skeptical of watches gory theme and dark tones in the similar vines of other anime series of the new millennium but thanks to handle the light and dark tones of the series and meet the unforgettable characters, they’re all really great as possible.
At this point, I’m really gonna miss the old days of snk characters and especially for main ones, they’ll differently live on to the end of the story.
So I’m happy to see them go, and the ratings will go up with 10/10 for ultimate conclusion.

Do you mind if I ask, what are your top 5 (or top 10) favorite moments from any anime (can be series or movies)? Sorry if you have answered this before.....
Oh wow I’ve never had to think about my top anime moments before. This is exciting! Off the top of my head and in no particular order I’d have to say :
In Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood when Ed was fighting Father by himself and everyone was calling his name to cheer him on….chills.
Another top moment for me (not necessarily my favorite but the emotions stuck with me for a while) was the last roll call in Assassination Classroom. I don’t think I’ve recovered from that to this day.
There’s so many moments in Fairy Tail (the anime that got me into anime): when they came back after being stuck on Tenrou Island for 7 years, Natsu beating the twin dragons for Lucy, fairy tail winning the grand magic games, Lucy reuniting with the guild after they all went their separate ways.
In Haikyuu when they were up against Shiratorizawa and they needed one more point to win. Man the animation for that was godly. With Ushijima holding down Tsuki and Hinata but the other teammates fighting to lift him up definitely a favorite anime moment of mine.
Gintama also has a lot of memorable moments for me. Just a few off the top of my head is the ladies absolutely kicking ass during the Courtesan of a Nation arc, when Gin found out his teacher was still alive, when everyone came together to fight Utsuro
In Eighty Six when Shin and Lena (and the entire squadron) officially met for the first time I cried my eyes out.
Attack on Titan had a lot of moments but the one that made me decide to stick to watching it was the sealing of Wall Rose. The animation, soundtrack and voice acting made me officially love this anime
In Demon Slayer, the fight between Uzui and Tanjiro vs Gyutaro will always be epic. I don’t know if any other animated fight could top that for me personally.
Again these are just a few moments that came to the top of my head, there’s probably more but this post will be too long lol. Thank you for asking such an awesome question!

You think the tunnels were made to shelter from the rumbling? Or did they explain why they built it? I forget
the underground city “”according to old documents”” is a failed project that was supposed to be where humanity just… lived so as to not worry about titans anymore. but the plan fell through.
no reason given lol. maybe that was the plan during the exodus eldians took to paradis in the first place before king fritz constructed the walls.
either way, the underground exists in before the fall, which is (i believe) 60 years or at least several decades before the events of the main story. the underground then was definitely better in that it wasn’t so run down/dirty, but it was still a major haven for criminal activity.
king fritz never had any plans of actually executing the rumbling, so i think that it was the first scramble the eldians made for shelter right after fritz’s vow of nonviolence and the end of the great titan war.
in my mind to get all thematic and metaphorical, i think it’s fitting for the underground to be that kind of place as a sort of pillar to fear, shame, and cowardice :P

I think I finally have my rating rating on AOT after so many ups and downs. I had to cool off first from the disappointment because it's really not as low of a show as I make it sound at times. I think solid 6.5/10
(Review contains slight spoilers without specifics)
Unfortunately, AOT is a show that has a lot of strong parts and scenes (Erens mothers death, Erwin's speech etc) but it's weak looked at as a whole. Unlike shows that have the opposite problem such as ATLA, each book individually isn't very strong but when looked at together in a progression creates a solid beautiful story. The second major flaw of AOT is it's plot, writing and overall narrative. Poor writing can be hidden behind a good narrative (not to keep using ATLA verse but some of the writing isn't very good at times especially in LOK but the narrative is good.) AOT suffers from a lack of character development and pacing issues. While Eren gets a lot of development he's still one dimensional which is not rare for an anime but the supporting cast has nothing of substance to give than what they are written for. The only character that does is Reiner and he experiences a better character arc than the main character. This, I believe, contributes to the poor storytelling because the author can't write their characters doing day to day nonsense things (until Levi comes along with his quirks on cleaning). This is something long stories like Gintama, One Piece or even Hunter Hunter benefit from. The world and cast are so in depth and rich the authors can buy time from writing plot points by writing their characters simply interacting. AOT can't benefit from that because the world and characters are limited which wouldn't be a problem if the narrative was strong enough for it not to matter. Which causes the main issue, time skips.
Time skips are used often in storytelling, it allows the speaker/author/storyteller to get where they want the characters without having to explain every step of the way. It's used all the time in small increments usually skipping a few days, hours, or just minutes. AOT skips large amounts of time, years, without explanation in order to hide the weakness of the narrative. It's use after the second time makes it obvious it's a crutch for the writer and unfortunately makes the story come off as underdeveloped,(which proven by the ending, it is underdeveloped.) I don't blame the mangaka because mangaka are often put under intense pressure to continue their story as fast as possible to the point of hospitalization.
Finally, the time travel. It doesn't logically work and fictions number one rule is that it **has to make sense**. It wouldn't be possible for Eren to influence his father unless the type of time traveled used is alternate timelines which is not proven nor mentioned. As far as the story it's present as linear or even in a circle or perhaps happening simultaneously which doesn't make sense. So if this newest part doesn't show an alternate timeline was created, then that is a huge huge flaw.
And there's no narrative driven reason for Eren to do what he did at the end. He could've had a five minute conversation that would've lead to a better ending. We've spent the entire story setting up that Armin is the smartest person to walk in that world, he somehow figured out many things that he shouldnt have been able to figure out, but you couldn't ask his opinion? If you're going to go that route you must provide a narrative driven reason why.
The animation is amazing the story is shocking thrilling the speeches are good but it is unfortunately not going to be able to be up there with Code Geass which it emulated and eventually blatantly ripped off, Cowboy Bebop, or FMA.
This is just a side note, but killing characters off screen that were part of the major cast for a while to me is really the low of the low for storytelling and reserved for episodic TV shows that need to replace actors not for anything else but that's more subjective than objective so I won't include it in the major issues.
Do I still recommend this anime? Not really. If you've watched anime for a while and/or if you've seen any Gundam and Code Geass I would pass. I would only recommend AOT to new anime fans or to those that care about seeing generationally important shows. This show made an impact on people no matter how it went.

Okay, I've put together my thoughts on Attack on Titan after watching through it as it aired on Toonami.
After all of this, I think I can just say this:
It has beautiful animation, it has amazing music, there's really fun moments, and the world building started out strong. The voice acting is phenomenal, and even English dubbed has so much emotion and weight to it.
But I regret watching it. I dislike what it became and ended on.
If that upsets you, I do not advise reading further.
I don't like it in the end and only initially watched it because my friends in college did, and eventually it came to Toonami, a convenient source of anime when I cannot reliably stream it. AOT's arguably one of the most popular anime in the world, and I thought maybe it'd rub off on me. It did for a bit, but in the end it just falls apart for me.
I think it lost me around the introduction of omniscient time awareness and the very blatant World War 2 comparisons. For my own health and sanity, I won't dive deeper into why the latter bit is bad.
I think too that the end note is literally just "the world will always be a god awful place no matter what you do to change it, and you're a fool to think otherwise," and that's just depressing. Eren's whole bit just doesn't make sense either because it just plays out into him making his own suicide note. Into DRIVING HIMSELF there too, because he ended up killing his own mom to drive him to this finality to begin with. Not to mention he saw himself committing fucking world wide genocide over and over and couldn't stop himself? In ANY timeline? Just because he's an idiot? Not even fucking ONCE? Even though he had the wherewithal to kill his own mother? Sorry, that's just HORRIBLE writing, that's the author trying to be extra edgy and trying to justify what he wrote.
In the end it feels like the author had these three separate stories that he decided to make into one, and for me personally it just doesn't work: a story about survival and mystery, someone who grows up aware of atrocities they will eventually commit, and war fan fiction. It feels like the author was affected by his very own grim and distorted world views and when presented with a medium to present something different, he instead hammers it down harder.
I will say that maybe it's just that I dislike sad endings, but I struggle with depression myself. Every fucking day I wrestle with the thought of ending it all, but I don't because, unfortunately, people and animals need me. I have my own grim view of the world, and sure, maybe humanity as a whole is just doomed to be a bunch of piece of shit assholes that murder and harm each other from now until eternity.
But god, wouldn't it be wonderful if we could just pretend for a moment that it wasn't? If we could see the good in this world that is consistently and desperately covered up and quieted by the bad? Sure, maybe aot's take is more realistic in assuming we're doomed to endless hatred and nothing matters in the end, but that's just so, so unsatisfying.
Maybe that's why I try to write my own stories where the heroes try to make the world a better place and have their own happily ever after. That's not to say you can't have any edge whatsoever, but still. To defy odds stacked so high against your favor and clench happiness from the iron grip of nihilism and wrath will always be better to me, as cliche as it is.
And I'm willing to recognize that maybe it is just me and that this is an okay story. I still don't like it in the end, and I don't understand people who call it the best anime, manga, or story of all time. I can't take back that I watched it. I can't take back that I did enjoy very human moments between the cast and I can't take back being in awe of the action. I can't take back being invested either.
I just don't like it anymore and I regret watching it.
I feel like people mostly became invested because the mystery was that strong in the beginning, and visually it was very appealing, especially the ODM gear. The characters have very emotional or light hearted moments too that make them loveable. After that, I think it became a mix of coffee shop au's, woobification, speculation, and the visuals and residual character writing from earlier seasons that took it to its ending, much like a plane with a shot engine.
People are attached to it, and I understand you'd enjoy it because you did before or you just can't let go. The fan art, the passion, the memes, what the fans took got out of the series was beautiful, silly, and hype af. Fandom is a hell of a drug, hype is too.
But for me in the end, it's a depressing suicide note. It's a depressing comment that the world will never get better. That our lives are ultimately POINTLESS and nothing we do can ever change that or make any of it matter in the end. You're doomed, I'm doomed, and you cannot change that. You can do all the good you want, but in the end only the bad will remain. And the cycle will endlessly repeat forever. Happy endings are no longer good or realistic.
Sorry, but even though I also think the world is hell, I don't agree. I reject the thought that the good will always be muddied out by evil. I have to believe good will eventually triumph. I have to believe the people I help and the people that help me are deserving of life and happiness. I have to believe that people beyond my scope are just as capable of good despite evil politicians and bad actors trying to pit us against one another. Otherwise, what the hell am I even here for? Why am I even alive?
So yeah. I regret it. I don't like it. I reject its message wholeheartedly.
Btw please don't go telling me I'm wrong and that this was a master piece. You're entitled to your own opinion, just like I am to mine.
