The Steerage by Alfred Stieglitz

NEW EPISODE: Episode 08 is all about Alfred Stieglitz’s “The Steerage.” Many people think this is about immigrants being turned away at port, but that’s not actually the case. In fact, there’s a lot about this photo you may not know about. It’s even considered to be the photograph that ushered in modern photography. Let’s take a look at what makes this image stand the test of time and how it’s still relevant even to this day.

Le Centre Pompidou propose, jusqu’au 5 septembre, une édifiante exposition sur l’Allemagne des années 20. Elle couvre la période 1925/1929 pendant laquelle la société allemande glisse de la république de Weimar vers le nazisme. Les commissaires nous livrent un regard croisé porté d’une part par le photographe August Sander et d’autre part les artisans pluridisciplinaires (peintres, sculpteurs, architectes,…) du courant de la nouvelle objectivité. L’oeuvre de Sander intitulée « les Hommes du XXe siècle », véritable colonne vertébrale de l’exposition, est le reflet de cette nation en évolution. Le photographe classifie la société allemande en 7 groupes et une quarantaine de portfolios. Stupéfaits, nous scrutons la société allemande, corsetée et traversée par une profonde désillusion à l’issue de sa défaite lors de la première guerre mondiale. Un idéal de standardisation et de rationalisation tourné vers les masses supplante l’expression individuelle. En peinture, la « persona froide », individu sans expression , indifférent, apparaît. En urbanisme, des grands ensembles aux formes simples et identiques sortent de terre. Les artistes sont tout à la fois fascinés par l’industrialisation et la production en série que par l’émergence du travail féminin et la question du genre qui en découle. Environmental portrait research

Task 1 Pre-Production: Inspiration

2. August Sander

I only discovered Sander's work this week. This German portrait and documentary photographer did a few environmental photos I particularly like.

Described as "the most important German portrait photographer of the early twentieth century”, he's known for being attentive to details, using natural light, large formats and slow exposures.

I like the genuine and natural pose and expression on the two boxers’ face, what we might not expect to see on the boxing ring. They form a good pair, what Sander was good for too, creating a nice imperfect symmetry between them.

The second one is quite unusual and nicely portrayed as a police officer with a big and horizontal moustache which creates a nice interest to the viewer’s eye. We don’t focus so much on the ornamental weapon he’s holding in his left hand. The ‘gun’ characteristic of a police officer is not the main thing here, it’s quite subtle, which I like. The expression on the man’s face is quite soft too, which you might not expect either.

Nice contrast and different way to show people you would first see as ‘strong’ (boxers) or ‘authoritarian’ (police officer).
