So, fun thing—and by fun thing I mean it tore my heart in half—I noticed when I was rewatching Aftermath a while ago. A million people have probably already pointed this out, but one thing I wondered the first time I watched the series was why Crosshair didn’t try to kill Caleb right away if his chip activated at the same time as all the other clones. Because there was time for him to do that without all the trouble of trying to hunt Caleb down in the woods. The sequence of events is:

1. Commander Grey gets order 66 and he and his men kill Depa Billaba, who tells Caleb to run.

2. Caleb runs, and runs right into the bad batch.

3. The batch, who have no idea what’s happening, approach Caleb. Caleb very understandably freaks out and runs away from them and into the woods.

4. The batch has a little discussion about what the heck just happened. Tech says that “Execute Order 66” is being repeated over and over on the chatter, and Wrecker says he also heard it, but neither of them know what it actually means.

5. Hunter decides they’ll split up. He and Crosshair follow Caleb into the woods, while the others stay behind to make sure the other clones don’t follow them and find Caleb first.

6. Hunter and Crosshair find Caleb, and THEN Crosshair starts trying to kill Caleb.

If Crosshair’s chip activated at the same time as Commander Grey’s and the other clones’ he could have, and probably would have, started taking shots at Caleb when he was either running towards or away from the batch before they have their little “what just happened” discussion. And I assumed that that’s what happened—that he, like Tech and Wrecker, heard it over the chatter and that it just took a while for the order to take effect. But after that last rewatch, I don’t think he heard the order over the chatter at all.

He heard it from Tech.

Seriously, go rewatch the part where Tech says that one thing is being repeated over and over again on the chatter. He says “Execute Order 66” verbatim, out loud; Crosshair is behind him in the shot, and Crosshair reacts. And it’s right after that, while Tech and then Wrecker are still talking, that we get that shot of the whole batch being engaged in the discussion while Crosshair is slightly out of focus in the foreground with his helmet on just kind of staring into the middle distance and I cannot find a gif of the exact shots I’m talking about but it’s there.

So my dad does this thing where he watches Revenge of the Sith on mute because it's actually a pretty good movie if you just cut out all the dialogue. I would like to propose that the ideal way to watch the prequels is actually on mute with the score playing over them. Treat 'em like old fashioned silent movies, basically.

Like, okay, case study: it's not very easy to buy Anakin/Padme romance when you watch these movies. None of the dialogue sells it, it's mostly stilted and a little creepy. You know what does sell Anakin and Padme as this epic, doomed romance which leads to Anakin's fall? "Across the Stars" by John Williams. I watch those two in Attack of the Clones and I feel nothing. I listen to "Across the Stars" on the way home from the airport after binging a bunch of Clone Wars on the plane and I kind of want to cry.

Like, let's get rid of the jenky dialogue during the Mustafar duel, all the "from my point of view the Jedi are evil!" stuff that sounds like a ten year old wrote it, and just let John Williams convey the emotional beats. People already say that the Maul Duel in TPM is a highlight of the series and it's already 99% score and fight choreography. Let's just do that for the whole trilogy! I bet you anything the watchability and emotional impact shoot straight up across the board.
