The Musketeers Reaction: The Challenge
Jezebel (@typicalopposite) reacts [with occasional asides by Wench (@scripted-downfall)]
Now with BONUS: meta analysis :) (But Wench might post that separately later too... she hasn't decided)
[Oh, no, a prisoner transfer!  That always goes badly; just ask CTU (from 24)]
Well shit
Well…. SHIT THIS MAN A BEAST [Yup!]
“Stay out of this, damn you”  Let us get our asses kicked by one man.. on our own  [Red Guards be prideful dumbasses]
Wot?  WOT?!  WHAT!?!  [Tenth Doctor-coded, you are]  ☠️☠️☠️ [But also, agreed.  They explicitly warned the Red Guard.  And then tried to help.  Not their fault the RG didn't listen 💀]  Right!?!
No one asked you, man child
WHAT, ARE THEY ALL CHILDREN??? [Yes]
OOOP- awwwwww  [Dangerous for him and Constance to do that in broad daylight tho]
Well their relationship has escalated
[OH, LOOK, HER HUSBAND; WHAT.  DID I SAY.]  ☠️☠️☠️☠️ [Awkward, that is.]
Blech
Sweet lord  [Indeed]
Do they not get paid?  [Kinda but also... money got spent… It's not much, I don't think]
[They're Tinder-ing in church ☠️]  Im dying  [Porthos swiped right on the widow alkdsfj]  Trying to say something and these two are distracting me  [I adore them] Ok, so anyway… I’m guessing D’art does it, wins, and then becomes a Musketeer
Poor d’Art
Y’all two really trying to swindle money from grieving women… MEN  [Only one was grieving.  The other was having an affair, since those are highly common]  ☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️
Imma.  Oooop… Second-hand embarrassment  [She's covering for him :)]  ☠️☠️☠️
☠️☠️☠️ Oooop she ain’t grieving too hard  [I'm sorry, but they're kinda cute]  They are
“You’re cute”
☠️☠️☠️ Aramis is gonna get the money and Porthos is gonna get a wife  [adslkfjlksadjf]
Candle sniffer?  Is that a person?  ☠️☠️☠️  [Candle snuffer, dear]  I know 😂
["Too often, you let your emotions get the better of you"  "Can we just get on with it"  Sir, that.  Proves the point]  ☠️☠️☠️
Oooop, I see what you’re doing, Athos
Blech
[I love Peter Capaldi]
Oooop.  That might not go well
[Love lines like "I can see you are a man of quick intelligence"... they’re always passive-aggressive digs]
How did he not see him?  Or hear that?  They are quite incompetent
[OH SHIT I REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THIS]
Oooooop
“You killed my father”  [he’s making a habit of this]  “I mean, burned down my farm.  Prepare to die”
Well damn  [This has gone badly for young d'Artagnan]  d’Art, how do you really think this is gonna play out
[Of course Athos had to save him ☠️]  ☠️☠️
Awwww  [They turned it in a different direction, but I usually detest "I'm not like *you*" statements]
“Get some rest!”  How about dry off?
Bruh where did the rain go?
Bitch (Milady), why ain’t you ded?
[This is what I meant by “I remember what happens after this” btw]  Let me breathe on your mouth for a moment  [Shut up]
“Leave me alone, Athos”  Ma’am you came to him???  Womennnn
“I thought you had brains, but clearly not.”  Athos, what has he done for you to think that?  [alskdfjlsakdjf This is a valid question]
– – –
Jezebel: Welp! First off the level of ack I feel about friends having to fight each other in a competition is like…. Skyrocketing.  Idk if it’s gonna be as awkward (they each think they will win, disappointment if they don’t) but I feel awkward about it lol!
Wench: You underestimate their loyalty, dear… I'm reasonably — like 90% — confident that they're only, like, half-competing.  Because this is the current main way they know to get d'Art his commission and he's running out of time.  And these three are, it's heavily implied, the best of the regiment so it’s kinda foolish to send a new recruit unless it’s more about getting him the commission.
Jezebel: Ohhhh they letting him win?
Wench: I suspect they've already gone to Treville and been like.  “Don't consider us for the tournament.”  I don't know for sure, but that's always been my interpretation.  Also, it's less "letting him win" and more "nudging him in the right direction and giving him sway with Treville."  Buddy's from Gascony and got that hot-headed pride thing going; he wouldn't accept their charity any more than he'd accept their money
Jezebel: Ohhhhhh! I see!!  I love them! 🙂
Wench: At least Athos, since he's heavily training d'Art to compete.  I'm less sure about Flort because they seem to kinda need the money 💀
Jezebel: ☠️☠️☠️☠️  Gonna be another: (Athos) “We weren't gonna try to win” -> (Porthos) “Weren't we?” -> (Aramis) “Next time let us know” things
Wench: aslkdjflkadsjf Exactly!!!
Jezebel: It feels like as of rn they have put Milady in the ep…. Just so she’s in the ep ☠️ Not that I’m complaining she’s aight but she just seems random
Wench: You ain't seen shit yet.  Also, in case you missed this, they're Heavily paralleling Athos and d'Artagnan in this ep.  Her being there is definitely intentional.
Jezebel: Yes! I have 😂 Athos even said it ☠️
Wench: Ma'am.  He said one overt "you're more like me than you know"; that is not paralleling ☠️  And, if it were, it’s not the extent of the paralleling either
Jezebel: Aight lay me out the parallels 😂😂
Wench: I'll tell you in endpoint; it's easier to avoid mincing my words
Jezebel: Speaking of tho!  I LOVE ATHOS TRAINING DART SM OMG!!!  And Flort are just fucking chaos. ☠️☠️ I love them! Porthos trying to talk to the widow tho was fucking adorable
Wench: I adore them all
Jezebel: Ready?
Wench: Yup!
– – –
Ooooop
Ma’am!
She is so pretty tho 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨
Oooooop!  Oooooooooooooop!!
No, she didn’t
Oh nooooo  ["Who else is just going to walk up and hand me 30 livres"  Well, ya see-]  THIS IS WHY YOU ARE DUMB  [Constance was]
PORTHOS!
OOOOP she’s giving him that look
[never trust "it doesn't matter"s]
HE BRUSHED HER HAIR BACK WITH HIS PINKY!?  THAT WAS ADORABLE
Ooooop!
[I kinda adore them; sorry to your Portamis plotting ☠️ ]  (Porthos) “What was I supposed to be getting again?”  (Aramis) “….. NOT THAT”
[Shocker, the marksman won the shooting competition alksdfj]  Aramis and that damn hat ☠️☠️☠️  [Oh, and the close-combat dude won the close-combat skirmish; who knew? :)]  OH THIS GIF SET!
Athos watching all proud  [*simultaneously* Also, in point of fact, I'm not actually sure Athos is competing at all]
Angry face
HE DIDNT FLINCH
“No control….”  Buddy. You knew this. Ahead of time. Why are you acting like it's new???
I see what you’re doing… Le gasp!  CARDINAL YOU ARE INSANE!
PORTHOS!
Dawwwww
Ma’am!  SO ARE YOU
Okay, not the last one.  But two out of three isn’t bad!
[Whoops]
Ma’am… It- Y’all- Sir.  THEY ARE SO PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER  [Because they're so dumb? :)]  Yes
OOOP
He gone beat the hell out of herrrrr… Those things were allowed back then
Oooop
OOOOP
[Protective!Athos unlocked asldkfj]  Ooooop!
Treville knows he’s letting the guy fight huh?  [Not saying :)]
POOR DART!  [Poor Constance]  I KNOW
💔💔💔💔  The break in his voice when he said I want you
POOOR CONSTANCE
“Her name’s Alice”  Oooop-  [Callback to your earlier “Aramis is gonna get the money and Porthos is gonna get a wife” !!!]  Jealous Aramis
The Musketeers are like WOT
[Bruh.  Swordsman???  It's a.  Sword contest.  I know Athos didn't seem to be competing in the initial bracket.  But also. If the point is to win. ???]
They look like guard dogs ready to attack
[Once again, a very Doctor Who score… (Again, same dude, but it especially shows here)]  lol!
There goes the hat
[Also, gotta love Athos getting ready to throw hands the second Treville's arm got injured alksdjf]  Yes!!!  [Man was taking off his cloak in 0 time]
Welp ok.  King making up for all the childish behavior
[d'Artagnan needed to have his heart broken to not let it sway his actions ☠️]  💔💔💔💔
Ooooop!  He’s doing the thing! The thing Athos did!  [:))))]
Whoooop whooooop!  [I must say.  It's.  It's kinda biased.  To have the King.  Judging an assessment.  Involving the King's Musketeers]  ☠️☠️☠️☠️
Oooooo!  Whoooop whoooop!
[Adore the fact that Athos gets to give it to him]
Ooooop!  She’s been had!  [Why is she surprised that the scheming, manipulating, control-freak Cardinal was being a scheming, manipulating, control-freak??]  ☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️  [Also, I'm sorry, but the Athos/Milady storyline is something that is so delectably twisted I can't even... I'll explain some in endpoint]  ☠️☠️☠️☠️
“d’Art is the key”  ‘Cause he’s dumb
Sighhhh, womennnn
💔💔💔💔💔
Ack!  DON’T DO IT
HE DONE IT
HE DIDN’T DO IT
OOOOP!  She’s confused!
– – –
Jezebel: Basic summary: Poor d’Art!  But also YAY D’ART!  But then poor Constance.  No really 💔💔💔💔 POOR CONSTANCE.  But Miladys face when he didn’t get in the carriage?  stunned 😀
Wench: Indeed
Jezebel: Also I didn’t absolutely hate the king this episode.  He seemed competent ☠️☠️ I retract my earlier statements about him 😂😂
Wench: Ma'am. He was still being the same childish king he's always been; he just happened to be childish in favor of the protagonists.
Jezebel: ☠️☠️☠️ ok fair
Wench: He just threw a competition as a way of proving that his men were better than the Cardinal's, and then he rigged that competition, and then he took the prize money on top of that laksdjf
Jezebel: This… is also true 😂😂  Anyway 😂 ummmmm… oh yeah! Porthossss 💔💔 he was so soft and non-tough-guy with Alice it was adorable.  And the “Who’ll look after you?” to Aramis???? 💕💕  (When she leaves)
Wench: Yeah  :)
Jezebel: And Papa Treville! And how they all was like yeah fuck the competition soon as he got hurt! I love it!  And I did mention up there the look on Milady’s face when the lil dummy she was so sure she could seduce didn’t take the bait ☠️☠️ Now that may change I guess! But that was satisfying that he wasn’t like “well, bye, Constance; hello, Milady!”
Wench: This is true, and it's nice that he's not fickle... Fits in with his character, though, for the most part, so I'm not horribly shocked
Jezebel: Athos tho! I loved him this whole episode!  And his little "get down there before he changes his mind" (with a smirk)
Wench: Yesssss
Jezebel: Uhhhhh… the only thing I can say about Athos and Milady’s scene together was already said in the react, but how she was all “lemme stalk you” and then all “HMPH stop stalking me”... Like!?!?
Wench: You still don’t see the parallels?
Jezebel: Nope ☠️☠️ Just tell me
Wench: *sigh* Okay
Jezebel: 🙂
Wench: For reference, btw, we only have two more s1 episodes left.  Now, first, some contextual parallels: Have you noticed the running theme of scarring/binding/tying in Athos' and Milady's backstories?
Jezebel: Um. I- no? Maybe? You say that and all I think is her being hanged but I can’t remember where else it is happening or do you mean figuratively
Wench: Yes and no.  That’s the obvious example.  She was hanged.  She still "bears the token of [his] love" in the scar that remains.  She covers it up with a fine necklace --- a choker --- to obscure her past.  But less obviously... He still wears her locket.  She says that he gave her a necklace, and he still wears the chain that represents her around his neck.  Half the time he's drinking, his head is literally bowed by it.  Also, in his intro, the locket is the first real thing we see of his character.  He's hungover and drinking first, yes, but the second he gets his bearing/sits up, he pulls out the locket.  And that's before he even gets dressed/does his wake-up ritual.  Within that locket is a pressed forget-me-not (or an icon of the flower, but the point remains... a forget-me-not).  Additionally, the first time we see her, she's manipulating things so that he gets imprisoned --- weaponizing justice the same way she feels was done against her --- and quite literally manacled in the process.  Et cetera, et cetera.
Jezebel: Ok, so see! This is what I mean by I may see a parallel but would never see it that deep! I would see he wears her locket with a forget me not inside and be like ohhhhh he is like tormenting himself. And this I would not think about it again.  I would have never caught the choker being symbolic just that she needed something that fit to her neck… or she couldn’t hide the scar
Wench: And that's shown in their interactions too… In "Commodities," for example, when they both are back at Pinon: after she’s knocked him to the ground, she literally pulls him up to meet the dagger by the locket chain.
Tumblr media
Still Wench: And yet it’s also why she can’t go through with killing him; she's so distracted by it that she takes too long and d'Artagnan shows up.
Tumblr media
Jezebel: ☹️☹️☹️☹️ see now I caught that that threw her off ☠️☠️ I’m not fully unaware! 😂
Wench: Not surprised by this, but the scene still means more in context of the larger symbolism.  Then you've got the episode we just watched, where you have the alley scene, in which she literally tugs him closer via the chain.
Tumblr media
Once again back to Wench: But even beyond the literal symbolism that's emphasized overtly on screen, it's their literal storyline… They're each orbiting the other, unable to let go completely but unable to forgive and forget and move on either.  Tied together by their mutual scarring --- whether literal or metaphorical --- and the literal ties that bind.
Jezebel: ☹️☹️☹️☹️ that is so sad and makes so much sense once pointed out omg
Wench: So.  Why have I spent so long yapping about this?  Because all of this context boils down to Milady deciding to sponsor d'Art.  And what does she do for him?  She gives him money, BUT.  Attached to that money.  Is nothing less than:
Tumblr media
Still Wench: A necklace.  More than that, a forget-me-not pendant on a chain.
Jezebel: I meant to mention that more! I think I was like oooop or something but at first I thought it was THE locket! Like i thought she’d got it off Athos
Wench: It's not, but what it is is a cheaper-quality pendant.  It's not a locket; it's just an oval with a carving.  It's stark and cold, harsh and engraved.  Molded.  Like, one might say, a woman who's been through shit and decided to embrace the role of criminal she feels shoved into.  Athos', meanwhile, is a locket.  It's got the actual flower, soft and natural and encapsulated in time.  A happy memory encased in pendant form.  But it's also not intact.  It's old and withered and slightly tarnished: the necklace equivalent of that warm and happy glow they always use for the Athos/Milady flashbacks.
Jezebel: I am sitting here reading this like…. Bruh, these are blink and you’ll miss them moments and here she is just pulling full detailed parallels out of her ass…. But they make sense and make the characters so much deeper and sadder… ack
Wench: I'm boutta add a bit more, whoops :)  Because this shows up in the context of Milady offering to sponsor d'Artagnan, right?  She's offering him money.  But the chain comes with the money.  Her influence comes with the money.  They have to go together, or they don't go at all.  If he takes that money, he becomes even more indebted to her than he already was.  And he does take it.  And he takes the necklace (her "care," her influence, his debt to her) too.  AND… this is what gets him and Constance in trouble.  It's Bonacieux seeing d'Art and Milady together and discovering that necklace that prompts him to follow d'Art.  It's Milady's meddling influence that keeps screwing things up for them.  BUT it’s not all bad because, when the necklace goes missing and Constance asks about it, he dismisses it --- her influence, his debt to her --- as unimportant.  He lets it go.  She does it again --- not with a necklace, but still --- at the end: she offers him a ride in her carriage, and it’s just a simple offer, but with strings --- literally --- attached
Jezebel: (I was waiting cause it seemed you were gonna add more to that! Since he declines the offer)
Wench: Oh, no.  Nothing immediately attached.  But I will say... The more I (re)watch, the more I realize that she's got a lot of the archetypes of the devil figure.  (That's the character who offers a temptation but gets control of you in return)
Jezebel: Oooooo! 👀 I can see that
Wench: She consistently offers things to people --- love to Athos, power to the Cardinal, a hodgepodge of things for d'Art --- but it's not as easy as it seems.  With the sole exception of the Cardinal (because he's an unstable force that she can't fully manipulate), she gets nearly interminable power over the people who take her up on it
Still Wench: Anyway, that's the main but extensive parallel between Athos and d'Artagnan in this episode.  Athos outright says, "you're more like me than you know" (paraphrased), and they show it, bit by bit, with this running symbolism.  They're alike, but not the same.  They have similar necklaces --- similar ties to Milady --- but not identical ones.  d'Art hasn't and never will have the same opportunity to be influenced by her as Athos did --- he first met her when she framed him for murder, so he's not quite as inclined to trust her as Athos (who met her when she was either not the same person or pretending to not be the same person, depending on your interpretation) --- but he's nonetheless swayed by her.  Similar, but not the same.  See?
Jezebel: Yes! I do! 😂 though I never would have before! So thank you 😂😂😂
Wench: :)  np!  Any overall responses though?  ☠️ I kinda took over
Jezebel: More of a question… Am I just seeing her look confused he didn’t get in the cart, or is that gonna play into this little “she can sway Dart to come to the Cardinal men” thing she had because she doesn’t have the hold over him she thinks?
Wench: Wot
Jezebel:
Wench: Hellooooo?
Jezebel:
Wench: Good night, dear
-- -- --
*the next morning*
Jezebel: I was falling asleep ☠️ but I can’t remember if you ever commented on if there was a point to be made about him not getting in the cart with her. Like he can resist her and she didn’t expect that, or something. And because it seemed like you hadn’t responded I was asking basically if I was looking too deep into it. Like sure maybe she was like: oh ok then. But to me she looked legitimately shocked, as this came right after her telling the Cardinal it would be easy to sway him in their favor. If that makes more sense ☠️😂
Wench: It does a bit, yeah, and, to answer…  I kinda adressed it, but only a bit, with the "She does it again --- not with a necklace, but still --- at the end: she offers him a ride in her carriage, and it’s just a simple offer, but with strings --- literally --- attached.”  It's another way of drawing him closer/getting him under her influence.  And she's feeling Really Confident --- as you said --- about her skill at influencing him.  But what he does is a) show loyalty and b) show love.  (Both for Constance, but still).  This is particularly important because, if you think back to the pilot when they *coughs discreetly behind my fan* laid together, he saw the scar around her neck, asked about it, and, upon hearing that her husband had her almost killed, offers to kill said husband for her.  So what we have here is a conflict between her influence and the other people in d'Artagnan's life, and she's been counting on her influence being strongest.  (Which is partly because that's how it worked with Athos... even now, buddy can't move on.)  But she just got proof that it's very clearly not.  He just prioritized Constance (someone who'd just broken up with him, too, and seemingly very cruelly, even if Milady didn't know that) over her, and that's a sign that maybe she's too used to her own allure working and she's misjudged d'Artagnan's character,  But it's just a minor thing, so it's not panic yet, just confusion.  Does that make sense?
Jezebel: Yes! 🙂
Wench: Good... I feel like half of this shit is not what it is in my head laksdfj
Jezebel: ☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️ doubt it, because everything you say makes so much sense
Wench: ☠️😭
Jezebel: The emojissssss
Wench: Shut up  But I have had months to think about this.  And more since the book.
Jezebel: That was all I had for endpoint though! I just really wanted your two way more than two but I love it cents on that look
-- -- --
Wench edit, many days later: It's occurring to me that those "oop"s are very incomprehensible but idk what they referred to, so I can't put in signal phrasing... sorry :] (Blame Jezebel)

I’m trying to pinpoint what the hell is wrong with the series I’ve seen recently. I recall productions made 10-8 years ago. BBC productions like Sherlock or The Musketeers, or productions like The Vikings or Outlander. Are they prefect? Hell no, I facepalmed there occasionally too. But what they had in common were the characters who caught my heart and my interest. There are episodes I know almost by heart and I can still re-watch them in background. Even if an episode was not so great, I still enjoyed character interactions, their growth etc. I stayed for the characters if the plot was getting worse, because I wanted more content with those characters. I cared for them enough to rewatch, to write fanfiction, to read fanfiction etc.
And then there are recent productions like The Witcher or The Rings of Power and I just… can’t. The amount of plotholes is insufferable, the character’s motivations are either twisted or misplaced, or the characters simply act like they are missing their brains…
I can’t help but think those series are made for idiots.
And I wonder what is the cause. Is it the fact those series were made by streaming platforms and not by TV stations? Is it American thing? That you cannot have the smallest amount of suggestion and subtlety, everything is thrown into your face like a brick. Yennefer can’t have children? Yes, let’s make a truly disgusting scene of her using her vagina to become pretty. Is it because if it was only mentioned, or actually SHOWED in her reactions/behaviour, that half of the target audience wouldn’t have picked it? Is it acting skills? Wooden actors with two facial expressions throughout the whole series? Or is it a current trend in cinematography?
I don’t mind the suspension of disbelief. I do mind the suspension of brain. And I’m sorry to find this problem more often these days.

Marc Warren Characters & Their Reaction To You Owning Squishmallows/Squishables Pt 3
Tumblr media
⚜️Comte De Rochefort (The Musketeers BBC 2014)⚜️
●Looks at them with disapproval, scowling at their plush faces. "Please tell me they won't be always on our bed" Rochefort Says. You frown and pout with your best puppy eyes at him.
●"But Rochie, I love them and they mean a lot to me!" You Say, fluttering your eyes at him. Rochefort scoffs but gives in to your charms. "You are too charming my little vixen" Said Rochefort smiling at you.
●But of course, Rochefort has declared war on those plushies.
●Will toss them off the bed. "They are crowding the bed" is the response from him. Will eye them with contempt. "Y/N is mine you balls of fluff!" Rochefort would hiss at them when you weren't looking.
●Of course he pouts when you cuddle the plushies. "Seems you prefer those fluff rags more than me" Rochefort Whined, sulking away. You tilt your head and come over to him, plushie in hand and embrace him. You smile and kiss Rochefort's cheek. "Don't tell me you are jealous my love. You know I love you very much. Please don't be like that" You Say.
●Rochefort of course returns the kiss and looks at the plushie in your hands. You get a little nervous that he'll do something but smile when he just pats the plushie on the head. "It's kinda charming" is Rochefort's comment.
●Does buy you them from time to time, gradually grows to get used to them and maybe, just maybe likes some of them a little. But won't admit out loud though!
●He cares about you and loves you, so if these plushies are special to you then who is he to judge? He wants to make you happy and see you smile. Even if those plushies are on the bed!
●You gift him a plushie though he's reluctant to accept it at first because, well a Captain of The Red Guard can't be seen with such a thing. What rumours may circlet in the Royal Court?!
●For a Squishable it's Mini Ouroborus. He admires the plushies's dark noble look. If it's a Squishmallow, it's Gio the Gargoyle. He finds Gio quite charming.
●He does make you swear not to tell anyone about his plushie. "Swear to me you'll not speak a word about my, soft fabric companion. Promise me my love?" He Says looking straight into your eyes. You giggle and smile warmly. You reassure him that you won't say a word. Rochefort smiles at that and you two give each other a kiss. The fierce Captain of The Red Guard has a soft plushie companion. Aww🥰
Tumblr media
🪐Elton Pope (Doctor Who: Love & Monsters)🪐
●Elton loves your collection and is impressed at how you build up your current Squad of plushies.
●Can sometimes be found lovingly cuddling some of them and of course you join him on the cuddle fest.
●Bounces them around while listening to his beloved Electric Light Orchestra and dancing around with them. Like seriously, I can picture that scene playing out!
●Nights in are spent with Elton, you and the plushies. Order some pepperoni pizza, some cola and a good movie or two, even watch a few cartoons. Cuddling up on the couch together, you holding a plushie and Elton holding one too. Awww!
●You two go out hunting for Squishmallows or Squishables, searching for ones to add to the ever growing squad. Even vlogging the experience and uploading it to the Web. "Elton & Y/N's Life With Squish" is the title.
●You buy Elton Daxxon The Alien Squishmallow and The Flat Woods Monster Squishable for his birthday. He was so happy he practically lifted you up and spun you around and gave you a big kiss. When it was your birthday he gifted you 4 plushies, two Squishmallows and two Squishables for you which made you practically jump into his arms and kiss him. So sweet!
●Elton will bring one of his plushies out in public to take pictures of or video them with you. He encourages you to do it too and so it becomes part of your vlog videos and posts online.
●Like "Out here in the park, having a picnic with my lovely Y/N and our cute plushies, Daxxon & Soraya".
●You two sleep together, in a soft nest of plushies that have a place on the bed. You two drift off in comfort and hold each other, snuggling up together.
●You two are the biggest plushie lovers in your neighbourhood and the members of LINDA know too since Elton brought Daxxon with him to a meeting along with you and your Squishable Cat Bee.
●You and Elton become "That cute couple who love plushies". And you both love it💘
Tumblr media
🎩Edward Leeford. "Monks" (Oliver Twist)🎩
●Monks obviously is a soft and nervous boy. He adores your plushies and is at first nervous to hold one in case it's not allowed. You reassure him that he can hold plushies, there's no rules. "Just pick one up and give it a hug Edward" You Say.
●Hesitantly picks up the first plushie he sees, the New Jersey Devil Squishable. He gives a little hug and just feels all warm inside, all tension just leaves him and he's soon practically nuzzling his face into the plushie.
●You smile at happy he seems when cuddling one of them. He soon finds comfort in them as well as finding comfort with you. You often find him with the plushies around him, looking so cute and giving you a bashful nervous smile. You just giggle and snuggle up with him with the plushies.
●His seizures still continue and they cause him great discomfort and pain, whenever he has one and when it passes you make sit or lie down comfortably with a blanket and give him one of your plushies to comfort him. He happily takes the plushie and just embraces the plushie, nuzzling into it and just feels his tension melt away. It makes the recovery easier for Monks.
●He will buy a plushie whenever he can, loving the delight in your eyes and the smile that graces your face when he brings home a new plushie to you for your growing collection.
●You in return gift him a plushie just for him. If it's a Squishmallow it's Perkin The Mothman. If it's a Squishable it's Mini Phlox The Cat. He loves them very much and you can find Monks in the armchair, reading a book while holding Perkin close to him or just stroking Phlox like a real cat in his lap while he reads. Awww!
●The two of you sleep soundly together in bed, some of the bed plushies creating a cosy snug experience for you and Monks. Especially Monks who sleeps throughout the night, not a single nightmare disturbing his much needed sleep. Not while his beloved Phlox and Perkin keep watch.
●He would sometimes talk to his plushies, mostly chatting about plans him and you are making or how lucky his plushies are that they never got to meet his cruel mother. "Believe me Perkin, she'd tear you apart in front of me if I refused her requests" "You wouldn't like her Phlox, she'd take you from me any chance she could get!" Are some of the things he'd say.
●He's thankful that you, his beloved never got to meet his mother. She sounded so cruel and wicked. She'd definitely hurt Monks's plushies if she was alive and still was controlling Monks.
●You are happy Monks has found the plushies comforting and that he has two beloved plushies that he holds dear along with you, his beloved. Awww!

Thoughts on “Friends and Enemies”
Note: Spoilers galore abound below the cut, and this is going to be an extremely long post, as most of my episode reactions will be.
The opening scenes of this episode go by so fast! It  had been a while since I'd seen it before I started to try watching it again.   I'm honestly surprised by how well d'Artagnan fights, for a character who is supposed to be a farm boy from Gascony. Watching his father die in the rain is an incredibly moving scene, for which I give full credit to Oliver Cotton.
I almost immediately feel sorry for Athos. The ice bucket scene, while it makes sense as a quick way to sober up, will never not be funny to me.  One thing I love about what the series did is how well it summed up all of the boys personalities in one or two scenes, almost as if they wanted to contrast the things the fake Musketeers were doing.
God, the scene with Porthos playing cards with Dujon. The "Ooh. That's slander." when he's accused of cheating gets me every time. It makes me want to laugh but also makes me wince because I know l couldn't have fought off a Red Guard with a fork for a weapon.  I do love that Porthos acknowledges Dujon is a confident  man,  and that they highlight Porthos' tendencies as a thief. It's established early that Porthos is close to Aramis, and therefore is expected by Athos to know where he'd be.  The look that accompanies "Tell me he's not that  stupid!", is everything.😂
I'm a big fan of Santiago Cabrera (If you've been following my blog for a while you know that I swoon over him pretty much on the regular.😍🥰).  I know a lot of  people have varying opinions on Aramis, and I understand and respect that. I do have to admit that I facepalmed, hard, seeing who he was sleeping with.  I mean, Adele is beautiful. Her cajoling "Poor Aramis" as she traces his scars highlights the kind of character he is.    But, of all the women he could have had... Did he really have to choose the Cardinal's mistress? At the same time, I guess because I feel an affinity with him, I think I might have slept with Adele, too, if given the chance.  The scramble to hide his pistol is also hilarious. It surprises me that he falls for the “If you love me, you’ll jump.” line from her.  I never tire of the “Have you seen how far down that is?!” or the reluctant, “The things I do for love.”) Aramis reunites with the other Musketeers. He gets back to be immediately called on a mission  to Chartres.
The choice to switch viewpoints at this point to d’Artagnan and then to Louis is a bit of a headspin, but I understand that the Musketeers travel might be a bit boring. I do find the innkeeper hilarious as it seems everything important to a man costs extra if you’re staying at the inn.  The introduction to Louis paints him as a spoiled brat who can spend all day shooting pigeons.  The line about birds being “born to be shot, like rabbits and poets” says something. (Wait for it... just wait for it...)
The scenes with the Musketeers riding through cold and snow are pretty intense. The introduction to Milady, while cold, also gives us a side of d’Artagnan that we’ve yet to see. He agrees to duel Mendoza (which, in hindsight, oof!)
Armand shows up to visit Adele (also how did I not notice that she was hiding Aramis’ pistol and Richelieu saw it on my second watch through?!) I love that he realizes what he’s fighting. And it’s obvious he’s a control freak. Now comes the part I hate. d’Artagnan and Milady.  The promise of killing the man she loved comes too soon for me. Mendoza’s death before getting to duel d’Artagnan and the fact that the latter is blamed sets up perfectly!)
At least we do get to see d’Artagnan’s clever escape (although I wouldn’t want to be him landing in whatever that really was.) But this leads to us getting to see Constance and her fiery temper (”Touch me again, and I’ll gut you like a fish!” never misses me), but then her kindness takes over.  She offers him the way to the Garrison before he passes out. d’Artagnan is given some grand lines here.  (”I’m d’Artagnan. Please think kindly of my name, if you think of it at all.”)
We arrive back at the garrison to see that d’Artangnan has found the Musketeers, which gives him an introduction that reminds me a bit of Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride. (”My name is d’Artagnan of Lupiac in Gascony. Prepare to fight. One of us dies here.”-- and Aramis is right. It’s one hell of an entrance.) The ensuing fight and the Musketeers defense highlights the classic “All for one” mentality without ever needing to speak the line.  My shock when Treville comes in to arrest Athos could probably be felt from miles away.
The trial is clearly a set up and a shambles, and Louis is just naïve enough to believe it.  It’s interesting to me that we don’t see Athos given any time to defend himself. We also see him seemingly accept his fate as he refuses a last confession from a priest after telling him about a woman he loved who died by his hand.
Milady meets with Richelieu and reveals she was hired to retrieve the letters from Mendoza. Aramis’ pistol shows up again in the Cardinals hands. Meanwhile, Louis and Richelieu discuss the letters, proving just how vulnerable Louis is.  This cuts to one of my favorite scenes-- Porthos and Aramis working the guards for information.   The final fight is everything you’d expect it to be-- Musket fire, swords, Constance dressed as a whore for a distraction. . .  and the ensuing chaos leads d’Artagnan to his father’s killer. (huge sigh of relief breathed here for all). This leaves just enough time for the crew to save a resigned Athos, while Milady hovers above.  The final scenes nearly made me cry, as we see Richelieu luring Adele to a frozen spot where she is executed with Aramis’ forgotten pistol. True to tragic form, Adele declares her true love (”I love Aramis, and I love him with my last breath!”) True to form, Richelieu cannot get his hands dirty--he can’t even bear to watch her be shot. She dies repeating her mantra, “I love Aramis.” I was honestly shocked that I didn’t cry here, but knowing how Aramis’ character is set up, I expected it. I was a bit stunned to see that  Richelieu barely flinches at the idea of Adele being shot.  The Musketeers celebrate a win as Richelieu ties up his loose ends by killing Dujon with poisoned wine while promising his freedom, and implicating himself.
Aramis shows up at Adele’s only to find her gone. (This scene almost made me cry given what we’ve previously seen of his interaction with her. I don’t believe he loved her, but that pain!!)
The last, chilling shots of the episode establish Milady as truly heartless. She goes to confession only to be told by the priest that she is “a child of the devil..an abomination.” She then chokes the priest by his rosary and flees the church (”You don’t understand, I’m not looking for absolution.  I want revenge!”) That ending gave me a shiver, and I am honestly terrified of what she’ll do next!

Hi! I’m Winter, or Morwen, multi-fandom blogger, occasional fanfic writer, and total nerd. (morwen_of_gondor is my AO3, Winter is from my URL, and I don’t care which one you use). Welcome to my blog. Here’s some stuff you might want to know.
Finding Stuff
Tolkien
My magnum opus is The War of the Ring, a behemoth AU of The Lord of the Rings which can best be summed up as “LOTR+bonus Sons of Fëanor”. Things related to it will be tagged #the war of the ring.
All my other Tolkien tags are pretty standard, except that Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli together are tagged #the three hunters.
Marvel
My tag for the MCU and Marvel comics is (you guessed it) #marvel. I use both name and superhero alias tags for characters in general, but if the character appears before becoming a superhero, I'll tag them by name only in those appearances (i.e. content about Bucky in TFA will be tagged simply as #bucky barnes, but from TWS on, he will ALSO be tagged as #the winter soldier. He and Steve together (regardless of superhero status) are tagged #superpowered idiot brotp. I also have a tag for #reasons why i love steve rogers, because there are many many reasons.
Posts related to "Across the Spider-verse" are NOT under my Marvel tag, but rather under #atsv. ATSV characters will NOT be tagged as Spider-Man, because there are way too many; I will use character names only.
Sam Raimi's Spider-man trilogy also has its own tag on this blog, #raimi trilogy. Like ATSV, I don't include these posts in my regular Marvel tag.
Hornblower
My magnum opus in this fandom is The Kingston Shatterpoint, a collaboration with @musewrangler in which we did our level best to fix the entire Horatio Hornblower series. Things related to that are tagged #the kingston shatterpoint.
Horatio and Archie’s tag is #the indefatigable boys. Horatio, Archie and William are #lieutenants of renown, and Horatio and William are #age of sail brotp.
Other
My other steady fandom is Star Wars. I have written a couple different Star Wars-related series, but the only one that has its own tag on Tumblr is #cin vhetin, a massive fix-it story that fuses the Republic Commando and Clone Wars worlds (now complete and up on AO3!).
I have watched Lockwood and Co. and went on a posting spree immediately afterwards; all posts will be tagged #lockwood and co.
Meta, personal opinions, and my own original posts are usually tagged #winter says things. There’s also a #winter reads things tag but I don’t use it as much. For real-time reactions to things I’ve read or watched, I use #liveblogging. Anything I wrote is tagged, you guessed it, #my writing, though I don't reliably post updates to my fics on Tumblr, so AO3 will have a much more complete list of what I've done.
I also occasionally post things in the Three Musketeers, Murderbot Diaries, BBC Merlin, and Detroit: Become Human fandoms. I generally use the normal fandom tags for these.
Avoiding Stuff
I keep real life things off this blog most of the time, but occasionally I see something that I think is worth a reblog. If you DO NOT want to see these, I tag them with #real life. My opinions are strong and not always popular, and I made those tags so that people can avoid them if they want. (If you want to engage me in discussion about those opinions, you are more than welcome to do so. Please do, however, maintain the usual standards of civility. If you come in trying to insult or shout me down, you’ll get nowhere and end up frustrated and possibly blocked. If you come in for actual discourse I would love to talk to you.)
I also use warning tags for certain content, visual or otherwise. As far as I can recall, the list is #warning: suicide mention, #warning: skeleton, #warning: abortion mention, and #warning: child abuse mention.
Again, welcome to my blog. I hope you enjoy your stay!

The Musketeers Reaction: A Rebellious Woman
Jezebel (@typicalopposite) reacts [with occasional asides by Wench (@scripted-downfall)]

Ew men!  Well, man! But still
[For an episode that started with Athos and Aramis, they haven't been in it much :(  (just wait tho)]  Ooop… You said that and they appeared 🙂
Ooooooop… Tantrum!  [tbf, wouldn't you throw a tantrum if some dude wrote a pamphlet saying some other dude can have you killed?]  Fair!

Bruh.  Your wife.  [*simultaneously* Also.  SIR.  YOUR WIFE.  IS RIGHT THERE]  !!!  LIKE HAVE YOU EVEN EVER LOOKED AT HER!?!  (Flirt has)
Oooop ["Probably only mental vacancy"  Biatch]
Poor Athos is getting heart eyes and his wife is just standing in the background

Oooop!  Now Athos has heart eyes!  Er, heart lips?  Heart everything
Ma’am that’s gonna get you DED  [not saying that he's concerned about this, but]  ☠️☠️☠️☠️
Ooop!  Ooooooop!!
[Do you see what I mean, btw, by the Cardinal's scheming and misguided but not completely, totally evil?  Like, he's definitely better than this dude]  I do!  [He's actively like.  Okay, whoa, I said she was insane, I didn't say "deal with her firmly", is she reallyyyyyy a heretic?]  ☠️☠️☠️☠️
["I'm sure his face was a picture when you kissed him"  Yeah, but Milady don't care at alllllll] 😂😂😂😂
😦 OOF [ngl, he's got a point… She kinda needs to consider the consequences of what she's doing.  I have so much analysis about this ep, oml]  LOL  But also ☹️☹️☹️☹️ oooof
😂 Mentally he’s like say no say no say no
Ack, would not want to be alive back then
"It ended badly?" "You could say that" He says with a smile
[She just ran smack into him ☠️]
Well damn BY HER HAIR ☹️☹️

[His face tho]
Oooop the fingers!  He goes "four girls" and holds up his fingers and they literally are all pointing in different ways
[Someone's pissedddddd]
“Take this… but like… I want it back”  [*simultaneously* Sir just gave away his gift from the freaking Queen]
“We all gotta accept our fate in life.”  Everyday I wake up poor with a bunch of attitude filled hellions I think the same thing, chick 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨
– – –
Jezebel: I can’t think of much to say… but Athos was giving the star lady the smoulder. Putting Flirt to shameeee!  Then of course it all went to shit
Wench: Ma'am, I honestly don't get how you watch this and are like.  *shrug*  Not much to say.  (All affection possible, to be clear.)  But like.  I'm watching it and I'm like.  HOLY FUCKING SHIT OH MY GOD THE PARALLELSSSSS
Jezebel: Cause Athos is your beloved not mine 😂
Wench: Yeah, but you didn’t see the Aramis one either
Jezebel: Ok yeah no I didn’t 😂
Wench: Anyway, go on, say the parallels you’ve come to see
Jezebel: I’m not good at picking up parallels 👀 until they are pointed out. Or I know to look for them. And I mean… damn you!  Just say them then, wench
Wench: Well, you’ve got: privileged noblewoman who has an idealistic view of the world and acts in the way she thinks is right accidentally getting people hurt in the process contrasted with Athos, who we know was a nobleman, and who was a bit naive/idealistic when he fell in love with Milady, and who got Thomas killed as a result.  Which, to my mind, is why he takes her to the morgue. Is it harsh?  Yes.  But it's the same wake-up call he got when his brother was killed, and he knows where Ninon is heading if she keeps on her path.
Jezebel: And ahhh. Yes so that’s again a lot deeper than the parallels I assumed you meant, which were: strong independent woman?  Enter Athos heart eyes.  Woman may be deceitful?  Aaaaand now she’s ded.  Enter Athos broken heart eyes
Wench: Well, with the exception of the ded bit (because I’d not spoil something like that during midpoint, for shame!), that basically is the second parallel.  (I had this already typed up before you sent that, so pardon the repetition, BUT.)  You’ve got: Athos fell in love with Milady (a fierce, independent woman) and trusted her, and she ended up being very much not who he thought she was and killing his brother as a result.  Fast-forward a great many years of self-loathing, guilt complex, and abstinence, and you’ve got Ninon (a fierce, independent woman) with whom he’s at least entertaining the idea of something happening, and he trusts her word that the girls aren’t there, and he finds out that no, actually, she lied to him.  Which is (part of) why he’s so angry right now.  And I'd wager another part of that is internally motivated because it's a second time that he lets himself put trust in a potential romantic interest and gets burned for it.  (*snort* literally.  Wait.  WAIT.  LAKSDJFL;KADSJFLKADSFJLKADSJF  That's funny!!!  Tell you during endpoint)
Jezebel: Ok lol
Wench: Anyway.  Those are the parallels.  Respond at will
Jezebel: Except Milady killed the brother herself and Ninon just taught the girl to think for herself and she acted out on it foolishly.  Which, yes, the blame still can lead back to Ninon but I don’t think it makes her a bad person. Sooooo team Athos and Ninon for me 😂  Unless she is only in this episode and then never mentioned again… Then team fuck you writers 😂😂
Wench: You'll see what happens.  Though, I will say... It did kinda seem like she encouraged the note thing?  "Oh, lemme write this for you and then tell you that the Queen is a sympathetic ear *wink wink*" is kinda.  Active.  And, also, like I said... a lot of it is a matter of trust.  She gave her word, he kindaaaaa vouched for her (but, more importantly, bought the lie), and then it turned out to be false
Jezebel: Fair!
Wench: I interpret it as: He thinks her goal admirable, but also thinks she's going about it the wrong way.  She asked for his trust and abused it.  Etc.  Also, I'm sorry... I like Aramis; you know I do... but he annoys me sometimes.  He acts like he knows all the details of a situation a lot of the time when he just... doesn't?  And I feel like someone with eyes could see that?
Jezebel: No you’re right 😂😂😂😂
Wench: So, like, in the episode where they go back to Athos' estate, he keeps picking fights and worming for more information and even bringing up the vaguely bitchy "how many servants did this place have?" and stuff without reading the fact that This Is a Serious Development.  He's actively opening up to them a bit, in an extremely painful way, precisely because he does care about Porthos, but Aramis is just being. Annoying. Or in this episode with the "she was protecting the girls, not deceiving you."  Yeah, that's true.  And intellectually, I'm sure Athos gets that.  It changes nothing about the emotional side.  And Aramis doesn't know about Athos' past, so you'd think he'd have a bit more care/curiosity and a bit less judgement
Jezebel: Yeah that’s fair!
Wench: I mean.  They've known each other for like.  Five years.  Minimum
Jezebel: Trueeee! *Sigh* Dammit Flirt! You’re making me look bad for liking you
Wench: I will say... Anne (Milady), Ninon, Sylvie (not that you know her yet, but still).  Buddy's got a freaking type ☠️
Jezebel: 😂😂😂😂😂 executed
Wench: Ma’am.  Shut up (aff).  Anything else for midpoint?
Jezebel: I’m good if you are 🙂
– – –
Ooooop you sure ma’am?
“This is family business” *Hand raised aggressively* Oh no
Ooooop
Cause women do have brains and thoughts of their own 👀
Ackkkk I couldn’t have livedddd back thennnnn  [*You* couldn't have?  Ma'am, you don't like conflict; you might have hated it, but you'd be physically fine.  I'd be burned at the stake as a heretic in a fucking millisecond]  ☠️☠️☠️☠️
Oooooop she poisoned ittttt  [Where’d you get that from? alskdjf]  The way she held the cup ☠️
[Once again: the truly wonderful state of trials at the time]
Now I know she poisoned it
Oooop!
[His expression 😭]
Seeeee I hold grudges ☠️☠️☠️ so I will struggle liking Milady if she ever isn’t the bad guy anymore.  Maybe she’ll leave without a reformation arc but like.  Nah
[HER SMIRK!  What a bitch alksdjf]
How has it been proven  [As I said… courts are great]
Respect for the queen!  Proof she has a good heart, too, ‘cause her husband has been goofily eying Ninon all episode
“What will I do if he dies?!”  DIE!  You will die!
Ooooop… Poor queen
Ma’am, what does it matter if she was Aramis' girl?  YOU ARE MARRIED  [Ma’am.  You act like the sanctity of marriage means anything.  Literally two seconds.  After you were just talking about how you couldn't survive.  The lack of autonomy.]  It was a joke Wench shush
[Portamis' side-eyes alskdjf]  😂😂😂😂  ["How do you know about Madame de la Chapelle?"  "Her whole life is a lie"  Bravo, Athos, that's very clear.  Very informative.]  Right 😂😂☠️☠️☠️☠️
Sweet lord this man
“You think I poisoned him?”  Yep
40!?!?  Sweet lord  [Good news…  She can follow the path of all wives these days and just.  Affair]  😂😂😂😂☠️☠️☠️☠️
Why would he willingly drink out of another glass of water after that
Ooooof ☹️☹️☹️  [Ah, yes.  I'm sick.  Let me fondle this bone]  A KNEE BONE  [*Ah, yes. I'm sick. Let me fondle this *knee* bone]
And I’m a jealous bitchhhhh 👀
😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨
[To be fair, she didn't only betray her own sex.  She betrays dudes more regularly, in fact]  Fair… She’s just a betrayer of all things  [Yup!  Also… I'm sorry, but I do kinda love Milady.  In a love-to-hate kinda way.  She's just so delectably... morally fucked]  😂😂😂😂 You would ma’am!  [I always loved Irene Adler too]  Evil loves evil 😤😮‍💨  [Rude :(  I feel attacked]  Because you are ma’am 🙂 (aff)
And sir you will be going to hell for a lot more than just your relationship not being intact
[Athos is.  Very Determined]  He is!
Buddy… He said open his mouth, not lean in for a kiss  [Portamis banter]  You too Port
[ATHOS, STOP TOUCHING IT IF IT’S POISONED]  ☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️  [I KNOW YOU'RE NOT BIG ON SURVIVAL BUT STILL]
Oh the priest guy poisoned it
☠️☠️☠️☠️ Mood, Port  [Because the Cardinal is the only one who can call off her death and he wants to save her alsdkfj Duh]  … true 😂  God, to be alive during these trials
My dude why did you look?!!?  You.  Idiot.
[Damn, Athos, you speed-running the rescue]
Ack the intensity
Athossss  [Also, more parallels here I'ma talk about in endpoint]
["I'm not a cruel man.  Just a practical one."  Like I said: true neutral]  Very practical
Well damn  😦  [I mean.  She do be alive tho]  That’s true… But also, that’s so unfair  [Indeed]
[Buddy, that be called blasphemy]
☠️☠️☠️ They go… we can hear you
[I love Peter Capaldi.  And his accent is awesome]  Yessss
[Oh shit more parallels]
And sad Athos again… Well, damn.  Buddy can’t catch a break.  [Ma'am, this is one of my favorite characters; happiness is exceedingly fleeting for them]  ☠️☠️☠️
💔💔💔💔  [Poor Constance]  Damn ☹️☹️☹️
[OH SHIT IS IT THIS SCENE?  OH SHIT IT'S THIS SCENE.  d'Artagnan.exe has stopped working… "I love you.”  *blue screens*  “I mean... respect and admire"  "Say it again?"  "I respect and admire you?"]
👀👀👀👀👀👀
OMG!!!!  Awwwwwwww  [This can't possibly go wrong] She is marr- fuck it, I ship ‘em  [Ma'am has a het ship?!?!?!?!?!  WHOA!!!  (Yes, I recognize that I'm one to talk... shut up)]  😂😂😂😂 I love it tho! That was adorable!
– – –
Jezebel: Omg! 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨 this was just an emotional roller coaster! Poor Athos! 💔💔💔💔  Like 🥺🥺🥺 buddy deserves to be happpyyyy! And it just gets ripped away from him! Like for once (and you know I like Aramis more 😂 but still) the heart eyes was aimed at him! And then it’s just like… nope. Nuh Uh! Not happening. She’s exiled now! And by the cardinal… the one his wife is working with! ☹️☹️
Wench: Not that he knows that, I don't think.  Or does he?  I can't actually recall
Jezebel: True, but WEEEE know 😭  I don’t think he does
Wench: Poor buddy
Jezebel: I don’t think he would have tried the little he did to save the Cardinal if he had 😂😂
Wench: Nah, he would.  You underestimate his sense of duty/honor.  It's like when he had to apologize to the Duke of Savoy… That was exceedingly humiliating, especially given the Duke's responsibility in the Savoy betrayal, and the fact that he felt his duty outweighed his sense of honor/pride is telling.  Also, there would have been no other way to save Ninon; the Cardinal issued her order of execution, and he had to rescind it.
Jezebel: True!! I keep forgetting they needed him for that ☠️☠️☠️
Wench: And, finally, I do think there's a degree to which having the Cardinal helps.  Because he's the King's right hand, essentially.  His advisor.  And a) it'd make France appear weak to have the advisor to the King be killed, especially by an emissary from Rome.  And b) he does help the King on a lot of things.  We tend to see his scheming side, but, again, at least this incarnation actively helps when it suits him.
Jezebel: Yeah his flip flopping gives me whiplash 😂😂
Wench: :)
Jezebel: And nooo, but Athos!  Buddy straight up gone on his knees and begged 🥺🥺😭😭😭😭
Wench: And, just gonna remind... Athos was a nobleman.  Pride and honor are bound to be pretty damn important.  It's why the whole duty vs. love thing with Milady shook out the way it did; he had to do his duty, not just because of the King's ruling, but also because of his own sense of right and wrong... but it's tearing him apart because he did actually love her.  (Kinda does, in some ways.)  And he might hate himself as a result, but his honor still means a lot to him.  Like in "Commodities" where the guy asks, "How do I know you won't betray me?" and Athos' response is a vaguely insulted, "I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that."  All of which makes clear how significant this was by putting that supplication into context.
Jezebel: ☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️
Wench: Thank you, thank you... I'm here all week!  Follow me for more painful analysis.  (And it's not JUST Athos analysis, to be clear.  I pay attention to the others too.  Like the Savoy thing.  But like.  Athos be interesting!  I have put him under a microscope like a bug)
Jezebel: Also ack! I just feel so bad for himmmm ☹️☹️☹️
Wench: alskdjflaksdjflksadf  Now you understand why he is my beloved
Jezebel: Athos be just your type of angst… The tragic hero that can never be happy!
Wench: a;lskdjf;lakdsjf TO BE FAIR!!!  (And this isn't too spoilery)  That isn't FULLY true for Athos
Jezebel: Which part, first or second?
Wench: *whistles*  Or… Well.  I guess I can say.  The second.
Jezebel: Aight so the first implies enough 😂😂😂
Wench: Hmph
Jezebel: Anyway! I’m sorry I don’t think I will ever like Aramis and the Queen, unless they start having more scenes together to build a relationship. It’s just feels like purely lust rn. And this isn’t me just shipping Flort talking lol  Which is also why I was like Hmph about her being jealous
Wench: They do have more later
Jezebel: Fair ☠️ But idk I just don’t like it ☠️☠️ But I do like her, so let that be said… She is so sweet and I feel bad for her 💕☹️ just not enough to ship her and Aramis  ☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️
Wench: Okay, but you haven't actually said why you dislike it… I, personally, think Aramis is an idiot for it, but I'm fond enough of them both that I'm on-board.  As a passing ship that I don't obsess over but don't dislike
Jezebel: (Can you tell I’ve been writing I am not using my nickname 😤😤😤😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨)
Wench: asdlkfj
Jezebel: Well mainly just because I don’t see it. Other than he saved her and she gave him a necklace ☠️☠️  But also the thing about Aramis being an idiot! Which it sucks because you should get to be with the one you love and she was forced into a loveless marriage
Wench: You do realize he's been protecting her for years, right?  Just because they only recently started interacting, doesn't mean there's not history of some kind.  (Which is actually what's so insulting about the pilot episode.  The King doesn't even know who Athos is despite them being there for years as some of the best in his regiment.  So the Queen has likely interacted with them to a decent degree)
Jezebel: That true and fair! But I’m reacting to what I see ma’am! So Hmph 😂😂😂😂😂
Wench: Anyway, moving on. Milady thoughts?
Jezebel: I don’t likeeee herrrr 😤😤😤 lol!  But also I think I missed why she was even in the place with Ninon in the first place 🤔  Or did the Cardinal send her after the death?
Wench:  She was gathering dirt on Ninon to get her to stop.  He wanted someone in there getting information, basically
Jezebel: That’s what I thought!
Wench: Also, going back to the Athos/Ninon parallel from earlier: Both end up giving up their money/lands/etc in response to tragedy, basically rewriting their lives/identities, and moving somewhere where they continue preserving their ideals but to a less obvious degree.  And I was laughing about the "got burned for it" earlier because both relationships literally end in fire and flame.  Milady burns down the la Fere house and Ninon is almost burned to death.
Jezebel: 😖😖😖😖😖😖😖 trueeeee
Wench: And then there's one final parallel (that occurs to me right now)... From Milady's POV, Athos intervened (extremely spiritedly) on behalf of Ninon and called of the execution, but had not been willing to do so for her.  Obviously this isn’t full fair, since a) Ninon’s actions were only considered criminal because they were inconvenient, not because they were actually harmful, thus he would have done the same for anyone and b) he’d been living with the guilt of killing Milady for long enough that the situations aren’t comparable (e.g. he might have been able to think that he could take comfort in Milady’s execution being his duty the first go-round, but he knows that he can’t by the second go-round).  But there ya go
Jezebel: True so you see why she’s upset… not that she deserves to be upset but you see it 😂😂
Wench: I understand why you don't like Milady, but I do think it's important to note that she does have a rather sympathetic story.  I know things that make her even more sympathetic from later in the series, but you know some of it already... If you look at it from her perspective, she's spent her whole life shoved into the role of criminal to survive, and she keeps asking for someone to understand.  And every time, she gets rejected, and she's back to being a criminal, but she just wants someone to understand.  To recognize that she's not as bad as what she's been forced to do.  But she also tells herself she doesn't care about that --- she tries to force herself to not care about that --- and years of having to survive some way or another have worn down her morals.  So she's in this loop.
Still Wench: She's a street criminal but she finallyyyy finds a way to be happy, a way to love and be loved in return... and then Thomas finds out about her path and snaps, threatens to tear her life down, and she can't bring herself to trust that Athos would be able to (in terms of emotion or in terms of the law, it's a mix of both) see past that, so she kills him.  And this betrayal/murder is what truly drives Athos away (except not even that, because he clearly still loves her in canon), but she sees it as just more proof that she is a criminal, will be a criminal, and can't be loved because she's a criminal.  And then she goes and gets a job from the cardinal where, guess what, she's once again committing crimes for the sake of survival.  But she's still so desperate (much as she doesn't want to admit) that she even goes to a confessional to try and get absolution, and the priest rejects her --- condemns her for her actions despite the fact that God is supposed to be forgiving, tells her she's unforgivable --- so she gets pissed.
Jezebel: Oh gosh that’s a lot ☠️☠️😮‍💨 I was like what happened 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wench: Her entire life is a cycle of trying to survive, and then every time she tries to live --- to be recognized as not having much of a choice, to be seen as more than what she's done --- it gets snatched away.  So she steels herself, goes on with what she has to do, and the cycle repeats.
Jezebel: Yeah, I can see that once you say it. Like with Sam!  My biggest flaw in being a reactor is I don’t look deeper than what I’m seeing (and I’ll miss parts 😂😂☠️☠️) but once it’s pointed out I can really see it!
Wench: Anyway… anything else?
Jezebel: I think that’s all I have!

Whumptober day 24 - The Musketeers
Day 24: Blindfolded Fandom/Setting - BBC’s The Musketeers, early S1 before d’Artagnan is commissioned Read on AO3 Read on FF.net
~*~
"Filthy cowards!" d'Artagnan raged, squirming with all his might in an attempt to get back up on his feet. The thick rope that had been wound around his middle kept his arms trapped down at his sides, preventing him from drawing a weapon or throwing any punches. It also made it harder to keep his balance. Between that disadvantage and the blindfold wrapped over his eyes to keep him from seeing which direction the next attack would be coming from, d'Artagnan had no opportunity to defend himself.
The red guards who had waylaid him all seemed to find this terribly entertaining. Their jeers and taunts circled the unfortunate recruit, as did a heavy kick every time he tried to clamber back up.
D'Artagnan gasped as another blow came out of nowhere, driving the wind from his body and leaving him to double up and wheeze for precious oxygen. The insults levied at him fell on deaf ears. As soon as he got free of this, he thought with fury, he was going to beat each and every one of them into the ground, single-handedly.
"Shouldn't have thrown in your lot with that Musketeer rubbish," one of the guards snickered. The statement was followed by a hand fisting in his hair, pulling him halfway up off the ground. "Everyone knows they're sorry excuses for soldiers."
D'Artagnan felt blood dripping from his nose over his lip as he bared his teeth and snarled blindly back, "One of them is worth ten of you!"
His loyal declaration was paid for with a punch to the cheek. What was one more bruise to add to the myriad he was rapidly accumulating? Reckless and outraged, the Gascon added, "None of you would dare face one of them one on one! You aren't fit to even speak of them!"
More blows rained down on him and he couldn't see to brace himself. Pure stubbornness (and the fact that they probably couldn't hear him anyway over the shouting and jeering) was all that kept him from any audible sounds of pain. For crying out loud, he wasn't even a musketeer! ...Yet! But when he was, oh, he would make them pay for this...
"One of 'em is worth ten of us, didya hear that, lads?" one of them asked with a loud guffaw. "Well, there are ten of us, aren't there? An' one of you. Which means... you might want to recalculate that, little pig farmer."
"You'd think all his time wrestling pigs would have made him better at this," another hooted.
D'Artagnan's blood surged hot at the insult, and he snapped back, "You're saying you're no better than pigs, then?"
A beat of silence followed; he could just imagine their collective brains trying to work through the statement, which eventually one of them did. An angry shout preceded more kicks and punches that d'Artagnan couldn't evade, try as he might to anticipate the next shot. Surely they would tire of this soon, he thought frantically. Despite the Red Guards' ongoing rivalry with the Musketeers, they couldn't actually kill him... could they?
"Wait, I know what'll make him squeal," one of the men suddenly called. "Where's Bruno?"
D'Artagnan had no idea who Bruno was, but the excited agreement from the others left him with no doubt he wasn't going to enjoy finding out. Multiple pairs of hands grabbed him by the arms, hauling him up to his feet and dragging the blindfolded recruit along. He struggled and shouted, doing his best to wriggle free of the rope around his middle, but they held him firm. Somewhere nearby, he heard a gate or door being opened, then he was pushed forward. Tripping on the cobblestone, d'Artagnan ended up sprawled on the ground again, only to freeze at the sound of throaty, furious barking.
"Shit," he hissed under his breath, trying to scramble back from the newest threat, knowing that he had no chance at fighting off a dog without the use of his hands. "Bastards!"
"Bruno, you hungry?" one of the guards closest to him asked. Footsteps retreated, leaving d'Artagnan alone.
Bruno, and he sounded huge, started barking and snarling even louder, sounding desperate to get at d'Artagnan's throat.
Heart pounding in his chest, d'Artagnan said his mental goodbyes to anyone who had ever known him.
"Get 'im, Bruno!"
D'Artagnan felt something huge barreling forward, heard the sound of heavy paws and enraged growling; he curled up to make as small a target as possible and finally gasped in fear.
Having finally achieved the reaction they'd been hoping for, the red guards dissolved into laughter.
.o.O.o.
Athos wasn't sure what he'd been expecting. Since d'Artagnan's first, rather memorable moment barging into their lives, he'd proven himself something of a magnet for trouble. Athos recognized it; he had two other brothers who were just as bad. What he was not expecting was for the Red Guard to have gotten themselves involved with the newest recruit.
Though, he was quite sure it would have taken nothing more than a snide comment about the musketeers in general, or one of the three Inseparables in particular, and d'Artagnan would have been trying to duel the entire complement of Red Guard. Athos shook his head in spite of the silent affection. Loyalty was commendable. Perhaps once they taught him to temper it somewhat...
In any case, even Athos had not been expecting a full squad of red guards to have waylaid the boy. Cowardice was one thing, but surely this was beneath even them. Coolly, the swordsman drew a pistol and fired it into the air. It worked to make all of the guards duck and spin around in fright, though it had also made d'Artagnan flinch violently from his spot on the ground. Not what he'd been going for.
"Restrain that brute," he ordered calmly, nodding to the dog they'd been using to taunt d'Artagnan. The beast was still wearing a collar and lead; he suspected they hadn't been planning to actually let the animal attack d'Artagnan, only wanting to get a frightened reaction from him.
"Athos?" d'Artagnan asked shakily. "Is that you?"
"Mm," Athos assented, directing his coldest glare at the Red Guard lieutenant, the one who should have been above this childish game. "Porthos."
"You lot," Porthos growled in disdain, dismounting from his horse and storming over towards d'Artagnan with his dagger in hand. The red guards scurried to get out of his way. "Pathetic, that's what you all are."
"The next time you get bored, we'd thank you to find your entertainment elsewhere," Aramis added flippantly, his own pistol idly resting on his leg but pointed right at their attack dog in case any of them had the bright idea to loose the beast after all. "And leave our recruits alone."
Athos watched as Porthos cut d'Artagnan free and pulled the blindfold away. The lad was quick to jump to his feet, and he was a mess of bruises, but Athos was pleased to see he appeared only furious and not scared. Good. It wouldn't do to let the bullies know they'd obviously gotten to him. He was also glad to see Porthos merely offering d'Artagnan a hand back up without fussing over him too much, none of them wanting to give the guards the impression that d'Artagnan needed coddling or protection. Lifting his chin, Athos turned his attention back to the lieutenant.
"Although," he went on. "If you're so anxious to prove yourselves against a musketeer, any one of you may challenge me. Right here. Right now. Any takers?"
His eyes slid from one to the next, daring each and every one of them to try their luck against a musketeer who was ready and able to fight back. To nobody's surprise, each of the guards looked away as his eyes settled on them. By now, Porthos was back on his horse and given d'Artagnan a lift up behind him. Athos nodded in satisfaction and glowered around once more, just to make sure the message had sunk in.
"The captain will hear of this," he growled, before wheeling his horse around and charging out of the Red Guards' courtyard.
He led the way back to the Musketeer garrison at the same clipped pace, but immediately swung down from his horse to grab d'Artagnan as soon as he dismounted from behind Porthos. Without a word, he took the lad's chin in his hand, turning his face this way and that to see what damage had been done.
"'M alright," d'Artagnan assured him, wincing and bruised, but as fierce as ever. "Next time I see one of their sniveling faces, I'm going to-"
"Whoa there," Aramis chuckled. He stepped over to the recruit, draping a casual arm around his shoulders. From his unconcerned grin, only one of his close friends would realize he was getting in place to grab d'Artagnan if he collapsed. "Don't get me wrong, I do love the idea of those tontos getting what they richly deserve."
"An' the captain would feel the same," Porthos said with a smirk, only barely masking the vengeful ire Athos knew he felt at their recruit being picked on. "But then he'd have to reprimand us..."
"And then you're mucking stables..."
"And most importantly, there's no sense giving the Cardinal reason to convince the King not to give you the commission you deserve," Athos finished for them. From his assessment, the lad had come to no real harm, nothing worse than some bad bruises and injured pride. "Now go see Serge. We had him save some supper for you when you weren't back in time."
Clearly still raring for a fight and unsatisfied at the lack of vengeance, d'Artagnan nevertheless nodded and headed for the mess. Athos watched him go, rubbing his chin broodingly.
Aramis crossed his arms and smirked. "There's some fire in that one."
"He's gonna make a great musketeer," agreed Porthos. "If he can stay outta trouble long enough."
Yes, Athos mused with a silent nod. Yes, he was quite sure d'Artagnan was headed for greatness. And they would be behind him every step of the way.

Hey, do you have any tips on separating personality and mental illness while typing?
In yourself, it will be hard. Anything that clouds your thinking is going to obscure your cognition to some extent, and make it harder to figure yourself out, so I’d keep track of your thought process and why you are making it, then attempt to figure out what is the illness and what is your natural cognition. You should still have two “better” (dominant, auxiliary) functions and two “rubbish” functions. Your behaviors under stress should match up with an inferior function.
For typing characters, figure out what the traits are of that mental illness and then look at them as separate from the type you are questioning. Putting aside those traits, how does the person display them within their personality? What functions do they use to get things done? What things can you put your finger on as being a specific function that are not involved with their disorder?
The BBC’s Musketeers has socially disordered characters --
Cardinal Richelieu - Narcissist. He’s still clearly using a NiTe thought process. Ruthless in his decisions, but it’s all to serve a great “vision” for France’s future and he has logical reasons for all the nasty decisions he makes. Even his inferior Se kicks in, by making stupid knee-jerk decisions that get him into trouble under pressure.
Aramis - Sociopath. Charming, affable, unconcerned with the danger he puts others in, remorseless for all of his selfish decisions. He uses Se leap into action, Ti find loopholes, and tert-Fe charming the women he intends to bed and abandon. His cognition is separate from his antisocial disorder.
Lady deWinter - Psychopath. Ruthless, remorseless, out of control much of the time in terms of the Cardinal cannot keep her in hand. Again, cognition is separate from her disorder. She uses Se (in the moment thinking, action, leaping into danger, seeing what chances to take and seizing them), Ti (logical thinking, getting herself out of dangerous situations, bartering), and Fe (charm when she needs it, tormenting others to get reactions out of them).
Another one comes to mind -- Borderline Personality Disorder in Norma Bates, Bates Motel. Despite her disorder, clearly using Fe and Ne, in that order. Constant barrage of her emotions and how she relates to / feels about others going on in the background. Evidence of low Ti rationalizing. Same goes for Norman, who has Disassociative Identity Disorder. He’s fully Si and Fe.
Look at the disorder as “part” of them, but not as being a trait of a certain type. A disordered person of any type will look disordered but still like someone of that type -- it will be “that type gone to an extreme.” For depression and similar illnesses, look at what they are depressed about, and why they are stuck in that kind of thinking. What is it stemming from and does that indicate a function? Etc

A/N: I’m not sure there’s all that much whump in here, but Treville was hard to whump. We’ll go for light emotional whump. Porthos and Athos do make an appearance, though keep in mind that they don’t know Aramis at all at this point, which influences their reactions in this story.
Prompt: Insomnia
Fandom: BBC’s The Musketeers
Title: Losing Focus
No warnings
He remembers the exact date when he stopped sleeping. March 11, 2011. The day he found out that Aramis was MIA. It was a frantic call from Aramis’ mother at two thirty-seven in the morning. He almost didn’t answer from sheer exhaustion. Ben and Tim kept him busy during the day. It was a whirlwind of events after that. His contacts gave him little information and nothing that seemed true. Insubordination, negligence, cowardice. And criminal charges looming. The words didn’t seem true.
He saw Aramis once at the base hospital after he was brought back, a few weeks after the incident. Physically he was better. Not back in good health but better. And then the man was drummed out on charges everyone but Treville could believe. After a short stay at his sister’s, Aramis was gone without a sign.
The first few weeks he searched constantly. He skipped his lunches and stayed late after work, on the gut instinct that Aramis would return to the city of his youth. Every tall, wiry, wild-haired person he glimpsed out of the corner of his eyes his heart would start and his stomach drop. But it was never him because the picture he has of Aramis now is scrawny with a buzz cut to treat a head wound and shrunken over. Not the same Aramis he knew.
The effort is more than exhausting. He stops eating a lot as his stomach can’t take it and keeps a bottle of ibuprofen nearby for near consistent headaches. There’s been the more than odd occasion that one of his men finds him sleeping off a migrant on the couch or simply given in to his body’s demand for rest. He worries about Aramis, about Sarah, about Tim and Ben, about work, about his teams of Musketeers. He spends the nights lying awake in bed so as to not worry Sarah by wandering aimlessly around the house. It was easier, he thinks, during the school year to keep up despite the lack of sleep. But it’s summer now and when he gets home from work, the boys want to play. And Sarah’s had them all day, so it’s his turn to take them to give her a break. They don’t mean for their play to worsen his aching head or drain the last of his energy. And when Ben wins at Connect 4, it’s not because Treville lets him. His focus is gone and considers himself lucky to have gotten the game piece in a slot at all.
He wakes up on the third Saturday in July to Ben jumping in their bed. Tim stands near the edge of the bed, always the more quiet child. But, he supposes, Ben has reason to be excited, after all, it isn’t just any day that you turn ‘a whole five years old.’ As much as he loves his two boys, his worry over Aramis has left him with just a couple hours of sleep. That has to stop.
“Come on, dad. You gotta get up. We gotta get ready before everyone comes,” Ben says, trying to pull his dad up. Treville groans and rubs at his eyes, trying to wake up. Sarah’s been sick lately, so it’s up to him to get up and get the boys ready.
“Alright. Both of you go get your faces washed, get dressed, and make your beds,” he tells them, hoping they’ll hurry off now that they’ve gotten him up. Ben waits a moment until Tim nudges him along and soon Treville has silence once more.
“You going to be able to get them ready,” Sarah asks voice heavy and low.
“Of course. You just focus on feeling better. Come down whenever you’re feeling up to it.”
Treville forces himself out of bed. In the bathroom, he stares at himself for a good several minutes, leaning his hands on the counter as he tries to wake up enough to complete the basics. It’s only when he hears the boys running down the hall that he sticks his head out to stop them.
“You can head downstairs and watch some cartoons until I get down there. If you want something to drink, get some water from the fridge. I’ll be down soon to get you breakfast.”
He then forces himself to move quickly with clumsy tired limbs through the morning ritual until he’s finally dressed and ready to go downstairs.
“Do you need anything, Sarah,” he asks.
“No, thanks. I’m good. I’ll be down soon.”
“Don’t rush it. Take care of yourself first and text me if you need something.”
Sarah nods and slips back under the blankets. Treville prepares himself to go downstairs. The bed and his wife’s company is almost too appealing. He could just postpone Ben’s party. The guests would understand, but that wouldn’t be fair to Ben, he reminds himself. Sarah understands his need to find Aramis but the one requirement she gave, and as much as he wars with himself about it he agrees, is that it can’t interfere with the boys’ lives. He can’t neglect them to find Aramis and he wouldn’t, he doesn’t think so. He hopes he would never.
“So, what do you want for breakfast,” he asks with a forced cheerfulness.
“Pancakes!” the boys say at once. Treville just barely holds back the sigh because he can’t let them know that is the last thing he wants to make this morning.
“Pancakes it is then.”
He starts in the kitchen by getting out the flour, eggs, milk, sugar, butter, and baking powder. He starts by getting some sausage links going and then starts on the pancake mix. Once the batter is together, he remembers the sausage, smelling it as it starts burning. In the move to get the sausage, he runs into the bowl of pancake batter, knocking it on the floor.
“Damn it,” he says. Now, he’s got a mess to clean up.
“Is everything okay, dad,” Tim asks from the edge of the kitchen.
“Yes, just a little accident. Go back and watch cartoons with your brother.” Tim waits another moment before walking off. Treville turns off the sausage first and sets about cleaning. Seconds later, two sets of small hands join him on the floor in cleaning up. He blames the lack of sleep for the blurry eyes. With their help, the floor is cleaned in short order and he can get back to the pancakes. But he can’t get himself off the floor.
“We can just have cereal, dad,” Ben says.
“Yeah, cereal’s fine,” Tim agrees.
“No, we’re making pancakes,” Treville says.
“We?”
“Yes, we.” He didn’t mean necessarily that the boys were going to help, but he’s not sure that he can get breakfast together without their help. It’s not the first time they’ve helped in the kitchen. “Tim, do you mind measuring out the ingredients. Ben, once he gets things together, you can work on stirring everything, okay?”
Unsurprisingly, there are no complaints. Treville jots down the recipe for Tim and sets the boys up with a couple of step stools so they can see above the counter they’re working on. The boys don’t always get along, but this morning, fortunately, they do. They work together, with Tim doing the measuring, as Ben hands him ingredients. Ben watches carefully as Tim explains how to measure ingredients and crack eggs. But even as he watches proudly, he thinks of Aramis wowing his fellow cadets with cookies and cakes.
Then he reminds himself. He has to be here and present, not wandering. Aramis may be like a son to him, but these are his boys and Aramis would be angry if he were neglecting them.
“Excellent job measuring, Tim.” It’s forced but not because of their effort. “You ready to start mixing, Ben?”
“Yeah.” Ben nods seriously.
“You’ve got to take it real slow,” Tim says. “And gentle. Like this.” He demonstrates with a few stirs before handing it off to Ben. “How’s the sausage looking, dad,” Tim asks with feigned absentness as he watches Ben. Treville turns it and goes to the fridge to get some fruit. He pulls out a few apples.
“I think he’s got the stirring down, Tim. You up to cutting some fruit?”
“Mom’s never let me use the knives.”
“I think you can handle them. This what we’ll do.” Treville grabs a couple cutting boards, a knife for him to use, and a knife that would easily fit in Tim’s smaller hand. He talks Tim through the process of carefully cutting as he cuts off a large wedge that will lay flat on the board. He sets the first piece flat on Tim’s board and tells him to cut it up in chunks.
“Like this, dad,” Tim asks. He’s got everything in position to cut but hasn’t made the cut yet.
“Your fingers tucked away?”
“Yep.”
“Good. The last thing we want is a trip to the ER.”
Treville watches closely as Tim slowly cuts the apples. Ben is done with the batter by the time Tim has cut half of the apples but he won’t rush the boy. It’s his first time using a knife, so he’s expected to move slowly. As he watches them, he once again nearly forgets about the sausage, but he catches them in time to turn the fire off before they burn. While he starts cooking the pancakes, he sends Ben to set the breakfast bar. He doesn’t feel like getting the dining room dirty this morning. Now in a steady rhythm, breakfast is done quickly and they can sit down to eat. The boys devour pancake after pancake but for him the nausea he feels from a lack of sleep means he nibbles, eating a pancake and some fruit before he pushes the food away and tries to ignore the smell of the food.
Afterward, he sends the boys upstairs to clean up while he cleans the kitchen. It’ll be getting dirty soon with the party at 1 pm. It’s a BBQ with all of Ben’s friends from preschool and some of Treville’s Musketeers, the ones who the boys have taken a shine to like Athos and Porthos. He wasn’t surprised to find Porthos to be good with the boys but Athos was a surprise.
He should get the preparations going. He should get the decorations out and get a start on the food. But breakfast took what little energy he has. He moves sluggishly from the kitchen to the den where the good couch is. It’s comfortable and welcoming. He lays down face first to give his body a break from standing up and it feels wonderful to stretch out. From his toes to his shoulders, he enjoys the feeling.
“Are you okay, dad,” Tim asks.
“’m ‘ine, Tim.” The pillow muffles his words.
“You don’t look it. You look like when you or mom sends us back to bed because we didn’t sleep enough and are cranky.”
Treville pushes himself up, feeling his body protest the movement. He leans against the back of the couch, closing his eyes to ease the growing ache behind them. Tim climbs up on the couch next to him.
“I’m just tired, Tim. It’s been a long week. Where’s your brother?”
“Watching cartoons. You’ve had a lot of long weeks.”
Treville shouldn’t be surprised. Tim is six going on seven and more observant than he expects.
“Yes, a lot of long weeks and little sleep.”
“Will you find him?”
“I hope so but right now, we need to get ready for a party.” Treville tries to stand but finds himself back on the couch as his head spins.
“Do you want me to get mom?”
“Um…” Treville works to gather himself. “No, mom’s sick and needs her rest.”
“You’re sick, too.”
“Just a little headache and dizziness. Do you mind grabbing me a juice bottle from the fridge? I don’t care what flavor.”
As Tim goes off to get the drink, Treville stretches out on the couch but forces himself not to lay down. He just needs a moment’s rest and something to drink. Something to sort out the dizziness. He’d like some ibuprofen for the headache, but the bottle’s put away in the cupboard and he doesn’t want Tim to go rummaging for it. He thanks Tim for the juice when he comes back with it and slowly drinks. Halfway through, he sets it aside to close his eyes. The headache is pounding and he needs to get rid of it.
Then he’s slowly opening his eyes, blinking as he comes back to awareness.
“How’re you feeling, Captain,” Porthos asks.
“Huh?” Treville tries to sit up but a firm hand keeps him stretched out on the couch.
“You fell asleep. Tim called and said you and Sarah were sick,” Athos says. He’s standing down by Treville’s feet, which are covered with a blanket.
“The party.” Treville starts again, this time succeeding in pushing off Porthos’ hand, though he overbalances in the movement and would’ve toppled over if not for Athos’ quick movement.
“Is all set up for. People should start coming in about half an hour. We thought you’d like some time to get cleaned up,” Porthos says.
Treville sighs. “Thanks. I was supposed to do it, but I was just too tired to do anything. I messed up. Failed him.”
“Ben’s been having a ball helping to set things up. He knows you’re not feeling good but he’s not upset.”
“No, you don’t understand. It’s the one rule. They have to come first, over him. Over Aramis.”
“Easier said than done,” Athos says. It’s not absolution but an understanding. “Look, Ben is happy. He was overjoyed to see us come to help set up. It’s one time and no reason to beat yourself up over it. It’s not going to do any good.”
Treville nods. He’s not ready to forgive himself but he does hear the reasoning.
“Seriously, though, Captain,” Porthos says. “You have to stop this. I don’t know who this Aramis is, but it’s clear that he means a lot to you. Everyone’s looking for him when they go out, but in this city, it’s worse than a needle in a haystack.”
“I’m going to find him.”
“You don’t even have a clue where he is. He might’ve gone elsewhere and you’re beating yourself up over nothing, running yourself ragged for a man who’s far from here.” Porthos refrains from what he feels is the truth: Aramis is dead. From what he understood, the man was in no shape to be out alone, mentally or physically. Topped off with the weight of the OTH discharge and being responsible for a massacre, which Treville flat out denied Aramis could have been, and the man probably met an untimely end but was at least out of his misery.
“I know that no one believes me. I know that,” Treville says. “But you don’t know Aramis like I do. The man is a fighter and a creature of habit. He’s around here somewhere and he needs help. My help. I promised his parents I’d look after him as though he were my own.”
Treville pauses, leaning back into the couch to gather his thoughts. He’s grateful to these two men for coming over and helping. They didn’t have to on their day off. Both, however, have become senior officers and trusted members of the task force. More than that, they’ve become good friends of his family.
“You’re right though,” he concedes finally. “I have to stop this. I don’t know how, but somehow because Ben and Tim shouldn’t have to deal with this. Tim shouldn’t have had to call you two and you two shouldn’t’ve had to come do the work I should’ve been doing. Thank you. I appreciate your help.”
“Jean?” He hears Sarah call out for him. “Where are you?”
“In the den,” he calls back.
“What are you doing in here? Hi Porthos, Athos,” she says walking through the doorway.
“I fell asleep, I guess. I wasn’t feeling good this morning. You feeling better?”
“Yes, but it’s not going to last for long.”
“Huh?”
“Ben’s going to be a big brother,” she says.
“You’re…”
She nods. “Number three. I had a hunch this morning and decided to find out. How’re you feeling about it? The timing’s not the best.”
“Perhaps not, but welcome news still. Ben’s going to be so happy to have a little brother or sister to play with and teach like Tim does with him.”
“Both of them will be but what about you, Jean? You haven’t said how you feel about it.”
“Come on, Athos. We should probably leave,” Porthos says.
“No, you two are fine.” Treville stands and goes over to hug his wife. “I’m happy, elated for another child. I’m tired though. My focus hasn’t been where it should but it will be. I promise.”
“I don’t expect you to give up on Aramis. And I believe you. Okay?”
Treville nods. “Thank you.”
“Now, you should probably go get cleaned up while Porthos, Athos, and me work on getting the last things together.”
“When do you want to tell them,” Treville asks.
“In a couple days. Let’s let Ben have his day. Now, go get ready so we can get the party started.”
