I thought i was done with talking about my chemical romance fandoms crazy gender essentialism and transmisogyny and misogyny in general but i have one more thing. actually two. because i have yet to discuss why this is so personal to me.

number one: i really, really hope you people don’t talk to trans women like that in real life.

number two and in relation to that: the way people (you know who they are, or you don’t, in which case consider this a general statement.) are about trans people, trans women specifically i should say, and have been talking about trans people on here in general, has been deeply concerning to me because what they’re doing has happened to me.

when someone is dealing with their gender identity, you dont just tell them what they are. You can make it a safe place for someone to come out WHEN THEY ARE READY just by being openly supportive and in arms with transness and the transgender community. unless a person is going through immense obvious suffering and cannot understand why that’s the case you should NOT fucking walk up to people and just tell them what they are because 1 you are not them and therefore can’t be sure 2 that isn’t your place and 3 everyone deserves to be able to figure out to what extent they would like to address their gender dysphoria and what their desired timeline for doing so is.

you can say IF THE SITUATION CALLS FOR IT “hey, it seems like you might be struggling with issues related to gender. have you heard of transgender people? if so, do you feel like addressing your problems through this lens might help alleviate your suffering?” <- or similar. of course, i figured this should be obvious to trans people, who typically (bar conservative “transmedicalists” who make for an entirely different conversation that i don’t want to have) know exactly how harmful the inherent association of physiological and sociological traits in human beings with gender identity (and, by extension, gender dysphoria) is.

but really just making sure a person knows it’s cool and awesome and most of all OKAY to be transgender openly if they want to is the most important. you don’t do this by telling them who they are but by exhibiting public love for and solidarity with trans people. it’s always supposed to be on their terms, not yours. if you realized you were gay or trans because someone told you you were, that’s okay. i’m ecstatic that you were able to discover that about yourself and i’m glad it did you more good than harm. but almost never does the situation call for that; as you should know, you are not the transgender monolith; there is no monolith; there is no straightforward path.

there is only support and solidarity, which is not the same as declaring that someone is x when they themselves have not clarified it or rather need drastic intervention for their mental wellbeing and are genuinely blatantly clueless. i promise you most people struggling with gender identity aren’t clueless and know they’re uncomfortable with the box they’ve been put in, so don’t feel like you should just go ahead and pick a different box.

now on the personal side: it was really harmful for me when someone who wasn’t even transmasc told me i was a transgender man and that i should just accept that. my gender identity was more complex than that and i was addressing it on my own terms at the time internally because it wasn’t the business of others. publicly, i told people i was okay with using any pronouns and i disclosed the name i went by, as well as telling people i felt kinship with transness, but that was it. (if you’re reading this as someone that is aware of the celebrity-stranger central to the discussion at hand, you may be familiar with their own similar public disclosures.)

the way that maleness was foisted onto me by (well meaning) others made me collapse in on myself. they used he/him pronouns for me and barraged me with questions about my comfort with she/they/etc, as if i did not know better than them.

in the end, i just wasn’t good at being a man. pursuing maleness made me feel worse about myself because it was incongruent with my internal experience. not always, of course, because i am mostly a masculine/gnc person, but there were key aspects of being a trans man i exhibited because people told me i was one that made me uncomfortable, and i, just wanting relief, chose to pursue that angle seeing as it was other members of the lgbt community that pointed me there. im from a small town in the bible belt deep south and i’d never seen the world, because my family was poor and conservative and there was nothing for them otherwise. my new college friends were from big cities and had seen much more of the world than i had.

in truth, i should have been allowed to figure it out as i would have liked to. these people were aware that i knew about transgenderism and related to it, and i had told them what pronouns i wanted them to use, but they continued to apply pressure onto me. to this day, years later, i am devastated that i was robbed of my path to self discovery as it might have come about naturally. i would have made some choices the exact same, such as hrt and top surgery, but the emotional gravity of what i experienced will always stay with me, and the insecurities that came with it are still being shaken off.

this is my personal experience, but i know other people have felt similar pressure to conform to what they’ve been identified as by outsiders who were flat out transvestigating them.

i’m trans; i love being trans; i love my transgender brothers and sisters, i love trans men and women, and i love gnc people and the nonbinary identity, which has more or less fit like a glove and allowed for self expression that has ultimately been the most comfortable for me.

i am not saying i am going to be the leading example of all trans people, but i am an example of the consequences of these kinds of invasive claims.

if you’ve made the conversation at hand a “we the gerard way transgender believers and knowers vs the deniers who claim gerard is male” you have lost, because that is not what people believe. I would say most of us are very comfortable associating gerard with transness because they themself have expressed kinship and solidarity with us.

i hope if you took the time to read this you take all i say in good faith and understand why this conversation has hit home for me so personally. i hope you were able to understand why i am so distressed by those standing on a soapbox preaching harmful rhetoric and practices. and i hope that people who have engaged in said practices perhaps discover that they are hurting a lot of trans people, out or not, and i hope that they express love for out trans women more than pursue what they appear to believe are “closet cases” or “flagging”. i hope we all learn from this as a community online and choose to engage only with gerard’s gender to the extent that they’ve verbally signaled they are comfortable with, which includes not assigning them labels, whether that be female, male, trans woman, cisgender, or otherwise, and at least when talking about them seriously, using their pronouns (no, i don’t think you lovingly calling gerard your girlfriend is the crime here. it’s why you do it that’s the issue; you aren’t doing it with solely affection but rather with a motive as well.)

just let them, as well as other people, especially those you might encounter in your day to day life, be themselves without argument or unnecessary investigation. just leave people alone about their gender identity, please.

From OTP to OC’s: How to scrub your favorite fandom couple into original characters

Plot out a completely new story that you are dying to write—because all your favorite stuff is still there.

If you’re a fanfiction writer, you probably have at least one OTP (One True Pairing, meaning your favorite fictional romantic couple). You might have written them a beautiful story (or thirty) on AO3.

But at some point, you may want to take your OTP out of fandom and into the world of original fiction. Possibly because it makes your writing accessible to people who aren’t part of your fandom, and possibly (probably) because unlike fanfic, for original fiction, you can actually get paid.

So how on earth do you take other people’s characters and make them your own, without getting rid of the fire that sparks your muse?

In my journey from fanfic to original fic, I started by writing AUs (alternate universes) of my first OTP, Aziraphale and Crowley from Good Omens. In an AU, you are making big changes to the source material, but leaving in most of what your fandom loves about the characters. In a Good Omens AU, Aziraphale and Crowley are often human instead of angel and demon, but the basic enemies-to-lovers trope usually remains, along with the personalities of the characters, and as many similarities to the original story as you can fit in.

Scrubbing (that really is the technical term) fandom all the way to original is the same process, it just goes farther. When you’re done scrubbing, the only things left about your OTP will be the pieces you as a writer can’t live without.

So what are those pieces? Well, it’s entirely subjective. But you can follow these five steps to find them:

1. List your characters’ traits

We’re going to take as example an OTP I am currently scrubbing, which is just as cringy as all of your OTP’s: Link and Sidon from The Legend of Zelda Nintendo games. You don’t need to have any idea who that is to follow this article. But here are their character traits, the good and the flaws:

Link: human (or elf?) male, great hero of legend, very good at fighting, quiet, private, helpful, mischievous, possibly in love with someone he doesn’t remember (Princess Zelda), guilty, and haunted by past failures.

Sidon: 7-foot-tall shark man, gregarious, ridiculously optimistic and complimentary, charming, nerdy, sometimes over-confident, a good fighter, ages slowly compared to humans (or elves), and oh yeah, he’s a prince. 

Note that these don’t have to be the traits the fandom at large assigns to these characters. This is the way you see them.

2. List your ship’s tropes

“Ship” is short for relationship, in this case our romance. So for these dudes, we have: human/nonhuman or human/monster, royal/commoner, long lifespan/short lifespan, and size difference.

3. List your plot’s main points

In the two games that have Sidon (Link’s in all the games), Link has to go to four different places and help four different peoples (leaving Sidon behind), then beat a bad guy in a castle, and save the world.

4. Scrub in

Now we’re ready for the operation. You’re going to go through everything you listed and start throwing things out. As you do, ask yourself this question: Does my heart still race? 

If you take out a piece and your muse is still humming for this OTP, then let it go. But if the absence of that part ruins the whole thing for you, then leave it in. Remember, you don’t want people to recognize this as a certain fandom or ship, so take out everything you possibly can.

So for the Link/Sidon ship, I’m asking myself, Does it matter (to me) that one is royalty? Does it matter that they age differently? Does it matter that one’s two feet taller? Does it matter that one is a monster? Do I still need to have a save-the-world plot? Do I still need them to be separated sometimes during the story? And so on. Again, this is entirely subjective: leave in only what floats your personal boat.

5. Make it weird

You have your list! Congrats! Now it’s time to change every other detail you can, because you want to make your story as different from the original as possible.

Let’s say I decide I really want to keep my monster character. Then it definitely shouldn’t be a shark man like Sidon. So I’m asking myself the same kinds of questions: Does it matter (to me) that he’s seven feet tall? Does it matter that he has sharp teeth? Does it matter that he can breathe underwater? And so on. 

Perhaps the only thing I really care about is my monster’s size. In that case, I need to come up with a large humanoid creature that’s as different from a shark as possible: maybe a centaur, bear shapeshifter, giant alien bird person, or scientist that had an accident in the cloning lab. 

Let character and plot shape each other into a completely new story that you are dying to write—because all your favorite stuff is still there.

Here are two original stories I wrote based on fandom ships:

You Don’t Say: When two fake psychic con men who secretly pine for each other are forced to work together to solve a disappearance, they discover that one of them is actually psychic. But which one? This is Aziraphale and Crowley, with the tropes of enemies-to-lovers, dorkiness, and bickerflirting preserved, along with elements of magic. Turns out those were the only pieces I couldn’t let go, and the resulting story is nothing like Good Omens, but was really fun to write.

Bloom: A shy older man with magical abilities becomes the muse of a beautiful young male artist. This comes from one of my OTPs from the 2018 TV show The Terror: John Bridgens and Henry Peglar, an older man/younger man, teacher/student ship. I left in the age difference (toned down quite a bit), and kept the outgoing/shy trope, but changed the teacher into an artist’s muse with a gift of magic. This story has very little in common with a horror show about Sir John Franklin’s doomed 1840’s arctic expedition—except the few parts I couldn’t live without.

There is one major disadvantage for a fanfic writer moving to original fiction: you will not get nearly as many readers for original fic. But remember, readers in your fandom are there because they love the same character traits and tropes you do, some of which will be preserved in your story. You may not have as many readers, but you will get some fans of your own! And maybe even some sales.

Any tips on sticking with a legacy? It's amazing to me you have Sims from 2016!

ooh!! i know many people struggle with sticking to their sim families, but i will try to give my most relevant advice!

✨ miranda’s tips and tricks ✨

for me, I can only stick with sims that i am connected to. this means creating a backstory (or actively playing through a story i’ve made for them), giving them real personalities outside of sim traits, and figuring out what their favorite hobbies and interests are! it’s important to me that i don’t limit my creativity to in-game things, even if that means i can only imagine that a sim does a certain activity (or pose them doing it)! you’ll get bored real fast if you decide that they have to fit a mold.

with each generation, i’m trying to do something different and new. The easiest way to get lost in the motions is to do something repetitive! sure, there can be a lot of similarities from one gen to the next, but variation is key! [Ex #1: gen 1 had two kids, gen 2 had three kids, and now gen 3 has one kid] [Ex #2: vibes have been quite different. Gen 1 was more gameplay, gen 2 was full of spicy drama, gen 3 has been about finding oneself amidst relationships + enjoying the little things]

On that same note, I want romance in each generation. And as a hopeless romantic, i have used a different trope every time! It keeps things interesting while also playing to cheesy cliches that everyone can’t help but enjoy. you could also have the ‘no romance but sleeps around’ generation to shake things up [gen 1: forbidden love except not forbidden, just frowned upon at the time] [gen 2: best friends become lovers but with a SLOW burn] [gen 3: fake lovers to real lovers]

using gameplay outcomes to help further your legacy helps. i know the game is lacking…. Take it from me as someone who owns only 10% of the packs lol. but I try my best to let the game decide on some things while guiding it in other areas! your sim is actually bad at something you thought they’d be good at? cool that could change their career! your sim suddenly wants to have another baby and it isn’t planned? up to you, but it could open up lots of opportunities! your game killed off a parent too soon? rip but maybe you can use that for your heir’s personality development lol

if you’re intimidated by following certain guidelines, you don’t have to! I’ve set my own (can’t age up the heirs to see what they’ll look like, can’t travel to worlds that would realistically be too far away for every day activities, try your best to have family events/holidays)

my final tips go hand in hand: take your time and only play when it’s enjoyable. if the fact that i still have a sim from late 2016 isn’t hint enough, i can tell you that I’ve only played my legacy when I absolutely wanted to. if i wasn’t feeling it, i didn’t bother because i wouldn’t have enjoyed myself! this meant that i would go periods without playing (and posting), but i can speak from experience when I say that it has been for the best!!!

all of this is to say… everybody is different! what works for me may not work for you. overall, do what makes you have fun. as long as it is isn’t hurting other people, you’re doing great 😌

Given how gullible you can be, he ends up feeling way too bad about tricking or teasing you. Normally he really wouldn’t let that sway him from having his fun or getting something out of someone, but damn. He’s done it a few times to you, and after the second or third time he vowed never to do it again. It ate away at him too much, lol. Ruggie does a lot to get ahead, but he’s not without a heart, and you’re too sweet and friendly otherwise that it just feels wrong if he misleads you (and it’s purely because he ended up developing a soft spot for you). Now, though, if you offer to help with something (or on the rare chances he actually bothers to ask for help), he absolutely makes it a point to return the favor as soon as possible.

That being said, he’s quick to pick up on when you start overworking yourself for other people. While Ruggie doesn’t normally think much about you helping other people out when they seem to need it, he’s very adamant that you prioritize your own needs and safety. He gets a bit frustrated when you’re wearing yourself thin just for the sake of other people - he’ll tell you that they can either manage on their own or find someone else to help while you take some much needed rest. He’s fine working himself to the bone when he needs to, but that doesn’t mean that you should be doing the same. On a very similar note, Ruggie gets extremely irritated at Crowley once he learns that the headmaster has been holding the prospect of finding you a way home over your head and saddling you with a bunch of work and responsibilities that you barely have time for.

Your carefree attitude is something that Ruggie both loves and hates. You’ve even mentioned yourself that it can be both a positive trait but also a negative trait, and this is something that Ruggie ends up picking up on very early. On the positive side - he thinks it’s great that you don’t worry over unnecessary details. There’s a lot of people who get hung up on the little things, and you’re not one of them. He also appreciates that you aren’t super fussy or the type to complain or get angry often (he can get very tired of these traits because of Leona). But on the negative side - Ruggie may find it a bit frustrating when you brush things off even if they’re more serious issues. He can be prone to just brushing things off himself, but he does tend to take serious situations, well, seriously, because they can turn into worse problems if nothing gets done. He’s resourceful and likes to deal with issues if they involve him.

Ruggie may get on your case when you start procrastinating too much. He’s not going to babysit you or hold your hand - he has enough on his plate and you’re old enough to take care of yourself, so you won’t get any proper coddling from him when it comes to school work and projects. But it drives him crazy sometimes when you just… don’t do your work, LOL (it reminds him of his dear housewarden–). If you two happen to be doing some sort of study date together (which he actually took the initiative in starting at some point during your relationship), he will make sure that you at least get something done.

On the other hand, though, it’s not like you don’t put effort in. Ruggie’s really impressed by your initiative to learn potions and other subjects that would benefit you while in Twisted Wonderland. You don’t have magic capabilities, so what you can learn and actually utilize is rather limited, considering the curriculum. Still, you don’t let that stop you, and you’ll learn and use whatever you can. Potions can be so incredibly useful (and lucrative), and you throw your all into learning about it and you also have fun with it - Ruggie really likes that you don’t let being magicless hold you back that much, and he relates to doing the best you can with the hand you’ve been dealt and strengthening your skills wherever possible. And, hey, he could probably learn a thing or two about potions from you!

With both of you liking sweet food, it’s likely that the two of you will have dates where you two either bake or go out to some cafe or bakery. Ruggie can be kind of stingy, so chances are he will prefer to lean towards baking dates, just because it’s often cheaper to buy the ingredients and bake something yourselves. Still, while he knows enough about cooking and baking to get by easily enough, it’s not a major passion of his or anything - so some recipes are just a little too complicated, and you’d probably just laugh off whatever mess you two end up making LOL. If you two end up with a baking disaster, you could probably convince him to go out with you and hit up some cafe for a tasty, properly baked, unburnt treat.

Ruggie’s pretty confident and cheeky, but he gets a bit shy if you take a lot of photos of him. He’s just not used to getting that much attention, you know? Ultimately he doesn’t mind it much, and it’s pretty flattering, but he jokes around and tells you that he should start charging you for all the pictures you take of him.

Each “planet” has a color associated, you may use that in your style choices if you wish.

Like most in depth legacy challenges, it is recommended you play this on normal lifespan. (Long if you want to relax, short if you want to cry, or like me, I’ve used MC Command Center to make custom durations because babies are boring but we love and adult life-span)

If your career is max-able (aka like how in the freelancer career, you cannot?) it is a requirement that you reach the top of it.

Ever since you could remember, you always wanted to go to college to become an Environmental Conservationist and help take care of the world that grew you. However, all these plans got turned upside down when you became pregnant as a teenager in high school. Your parents always pushed you to be the best and we’re disappointed in you and kicked you out without a dollar to your name. Although it seems your dreams have been crushed, you are strong and determined to make them come true, even if there are a few bigger and newer hurdles in your way.

The Stars May Rise and Fall: The Annotated Re-read (Chapter 17)

Welcome to part… 17 now? of my probably excessive annotation of my own book! Here, I wax nostalgic over now-defunct department stores, examine the importance of jewelry in this story, and can’t quite remember if I meant to make Kiyomi similar to Kozue from Maison Ikkoku or if she just turned out that way!

As always, spoilers (including spoilers for chapters beyond this one) under the cut!

So, date #2 with Kiyomi… I know a lot of readers don’t love this, and you know… you’re not supposed to. What Teru is doing here is pretty shitty. He knows he isn’t really interested in Kiyomi the way she’s interested in him, but he’s taking her out again anyway because he was too big of a wimp to say no… he doesn’t want to hurt her, and I don’t really think he sees how he’s hurting her MORE by letting her believe there’s something there. Can we forgive him a little for being young and inexperienced?

Last time, Teru kind of dressed up in visual kei-style clothes and Kiyomi wore clothes that were more mainstream popular. This time, Kiyomi is dressed head to toe in black, and Teru’s in jeans and a T-shirt. This is Kiyomi being a little naive, I think. Teru doesn’t really care how she dresses, or how Rei dresses, or really what any potential date wears. I think Kiyomi really thinks that if she spends the money and the effort to fit into his world, it will make Teru like her… this is (quite sadly and painfully) something I used to believe when I was maybe a little younger than Kiyomi, and while it’s not exactly her best trait… let’s give her a break for being a little naive too.

Teru’s also thinking about Rei, and about Yasu’s advice, from the beginning this time. Kiyomi is able to sympathize with him about skipping meals when you’re single and living alone, and when their waitress gets flustered on her first day, Kiyomi is kind… but instead of thinking that he ought to be attracted to her, Teru is now thinking that she deserves someone better than him.

Yes, he really needs to tell her that he only wants to be friends, but he doesn’t… the only thing close to that he manages to say is that if they go to Marui One, the unfortunately now-defunct visual/goth/punk/lolita department store, he can’t tell anyone there she’s his date, but only that she’s staff for the band (which they do need, now that they’re selling more stuff). This is sort of the first mention, I think, of the “all musicians must appear to be straight and single” rule that gets brought up a little more definitively later. A big part of the appeal for a lot of the fans of these bands is sort of being able to tell themselves they have a chance with the musicians, so while Teru is making a good point, he’s also not doing a very good job of making it clear to Kiyomi where he stands. He should be up front and tell her it’s NOT a date… but instead he just says they can’t SAY it is.

A couple of important things happen at the store… Kiyomi suggests buying a really revealing dress, and Teru is kind of uncomfortable with that (but again, definitely not communicating well). They go a a jewelry shop, and Kiyomi finds a necklace that she rightly thinks Teru would like.

I actually forgot to go into this earlier, but the jewelry that’s given as gifts throughout the book are one of my favorite little details. First, Kiyomi has Teru’s bracelet that he threw out into the crowd during the show she was watching. It wasn’t really an intentional gift, but she wears it again later, and I this scene, when she ultimately goes back and buys the necklace for him without his knowledge or permission, she says it’s “repayment” for the bracelet. Teru does aesthetically like her gift, but he decides against wearing it at their next show—he doesn’t want to give her OR Rei the idea that he is “hers”. And then when Rei gives him a necklace months and months later, that’s simple and beautiful and personalized rather than just bought on a whim, he wears it right away onstage, wanting to show the world that he does love Rei, even if he can’t be out publicly. While Kiyomi’s gift here isn’t really THOUGHTLESS—she does choose something that Teru likes—it’s also completely inappropriate cost-wise with where their relationship is at the moment and feels like almost a subconscious attempt to buy his love. I don’t think she means it like that, but her whole approach is just a little naive (this may or may not have been based on personal experience as well… I was a huge dork when I was Kiyomi’s age.)

So Kiyomi spends a ton of money on new clothes, and Teru feels a little bad that all he can do is carry her bags (she hasn’t actually purchased the necklace yet here, but Teru has decided that he CANT afford it), which isn’t really a new thing but again, just kind of feeling like things aren’t quite equal.

One of the sort of complaints I see about age gap romances is that things can “never be equal,” there’s “always a power imbalance”… but I really tried to make Teru and Rei… not equal in EVERYTHING of course, but equal partners overall. They both “take care of” each other in different ways. I mean, if you don’t like age gap couples don’t read this! Everyone’s welcome to have a preference, but while Teru initially feels a little self-conscious about how poor he is with Rei, I think he also does have a lot of power in the sense that he becomes the face of their music, and by the end has a successful career of his own. (And he certainly has the emotional power to absolutely SHATTER Rei, which he knows now, and definitely understands.) I don’t know that there’s really a power imbalance with Kiyomi, but there’s definitely less that he can do for her… and Teru’s love language is acts of service. He likes to be needed!

Another pretty significant thing happens when one of the shop clerks recognizes Teru from the band, showing that they’re starting to become popular, and the clerk’s mention of the  upcoming single eventually (after Kiyomi goes back to buy that necklace) leads to them going to a CD shop to see the poster for the single on display.

Teru considers telling Kiyomi here that he can’t be with her—at least he’s admitting it to himself? But he doesn’t because he’s kind of a coward here… but when they go to the shop and see the poster, he whispers Rei’s name and Kiyomi hears him. She kind of teasingly asks if that’s his girlfriend (Rei is a unisex name), probably mostly hoping to hear him say he doesn’t have a girlfriend, but all Teru says is that Rei was “a musician he used to know”—assuming, still, even though it’s clearly breaking his heart, that they’re never going to see each other again.

In one of the very early drafts, Teru actually thought he SAW Rei on the street outside the store—not entirely implausible, if he’s working on getting the stores in the area to stock the CD—but when he runs outside whoever he saw is gone. I’m not really sure if I meant that to actually BE Rei, or if he just saw someone else dressed similarly or with similar colored hair, of if he was just imagining things, period.

It didn’t really matter, though, and I didn’t want it to seem like there was any possibility Rei was stalking him or anything… so I’m glad I changed it to just this whisper of a name that has Kiyomi wondering if she should be jealous.

I think I’ve mentioned somewhere before (probably on my deleted Twitter) that Kiyomi reminds me a lot of Kozue from Maison Ikkoku. I don’t actually remember if that was intentional or not, but they both have that kind of “borderline annoying but just because they’re young and inexperienced and are trying to be sweet” thing going on. (And Rei is so clearly Kyoko too… but I’m not really sure if any of that was intentional. I think at least some of Teru’s thoughts about Saki, about how he would forever be perfect, were at least somewhat inspired by the way Godai was jealous of Soichiro? Whether it was conscious or not though, there are definitely some similar (if slightly gender-bent) dynamics going on.)

I guess this is kind of a “down” chapter in that it’s kind of a lull in the action and that Teru’s guilt over his reaction to Rei really colors everything until they meet again, but I LOVE the nostalgia here. I’m so glad I worked Marui One into this, and even though it’s not the most fun day out from Teru’s point of view, it reminds me of some good times.

WIP Wednesday: the OiKage Singer AU

i wrote this back when i was doing oikage week 2017 and never finished it, and don't really plan to finish it anymore. but basically i was inspired to make these two recording artists when i saw this video and that deleted one of them singing nonsense speaker. wip wednesday is when i post a work in progress every first wednesday of the month, both for abandoned and ongoing projects. if you're curious about what you read, feel free to shoot an ask! :>

With a tired sigh, Tooru drags his eyes down another fan-made letter.

And with another, equally-drained exhale, he sets it down, doesn’t want to glance at the mountain of similar, carefully-sealed envelopes he’ll have to pore over later. Where he is right now is certainly where he’d wished he would be some ten years ago, and though he does love it, though it does warm his heart to know people enjoy his work and appreciate him and take the trouble to do things like writing him letters of admiration, he can’t help but feel lonely. It’s a solitary one, the life of an idol, and not in terms of physical interaction.

I love you, the letter says. Tooru doesn’t doubt that whoever wrote this isn’t simply saying that for kicks, but he has to wonder what it truly means when the one who says it doesn’t truly know him.

Maybe he’ll get to meet someone someday, he dreams—a fan, or perhaps not—someone he can get to know and can get to know him until eventually they’re comfortable enough to settle in with each other, ready to say I love you and then truly mean it with all their hearts. It’s a nice, noble dream, he thinks to himself, smiles to himself, however impossible others might tell him it’ll be. It’s the price to pay to be able to do what he loves. Anything regarding whom he loves will have to wait until further notice.

His phone rings the moment he moves to get a hold of the next glittery letter, and he’s eternally grateful as he examines the screen and sees the name ‘Matsukawa Issei’. Mattsun has been his closest confidante about a wide variety of things for a long time now, and though he isn’t the most responsible manager, Tooru will never leave his care, even if he’s dragged away from it.

He answers the call. “Yahoo,” he greets. “How’d your meeting go?”

“Uh, okay, I guess,” Mattsun says, and immediately, Tooru sits up. Aside from being overly-comical, one of his manager’s most redeeming traits has always been that excessive amount of slackness that brims from his personality and entire personhood. His voice on the phone right now, however, is far from the regular. “That’s actually why I’m calling. I mean, I’m headed there right now but I didn’t think I could wait any longer to tell you this.”

“Tell me what? You’re making me nervous.”

“It’s not bad. Sort of.” Mattsun’s voice is a little shaky and Tooru’s worry only grows. “So there were a bunch of analysts at the meeting earlier and they got to talking about your audience demographic. Girls, ages twelve to twenty-one, on the average, but you already know that. Anyway, you’re doing good with them as usual, but—they found a way to make you do better. And they’re really excited to get it started. They came up with a project that’s expected to double your fan base and profit.”

“Isn’t that the opposite of bad, then?”

“Wait for it. It’s a joint project with another idol.”

Tooru pauses, mulling the concept over. He hasn’t had many opportunities to collaborate with other idols at this stage in his career, his main focus mostly getting himself out as the lone star of the stage and the only one it’ll ever need, but it still doesn’t sound like a bad idea. “Okay?” he says warily. “With who?”

It’s only when Mattsun snorts into the phone that Tooru realizes his voice isn’t shaky and tense because he’s afraid—but because he’s trying not to laugh. “Kageyama Tobio.”

No one has ever dropped an iPhone so carelessly onto the ground.

There’s only roughly thirty minutes to go before their first official creative meeting, but even as he’s driven to the studio building, Tobio absolutely cannot believe that he’s been pulled into collaboration with Oikawa Tooru without his consent. Part of him isn’t surprised; from what Kindaichi has said, the benefits of launching such a project are excellent, to say the least, and will probably be good for him, Oikawa, and their respective offices in the long run. But all of him, all of him, can’t help but want to break away and run.

Tobio hasn’t been doing this for very long, not as long as Oikawa anyway, but he’s done an amazing job in what little time has passed—he’s done numerous live performances, a good lot of interviews, and has had a stable fan base with an identity for quite some time now. His merchandise sell pretty nicely too. He’s his own person, his own brand of performer, and his loyal fans, his manager, and his record label all know that. But for some reason, he can never ever leave Oikawa’s shadow.

Media compare them incessantly, always asking questions such as, “Did Oikawa Tooru-san inspire this?” or saying things like, “You know this was also how Oikawa Tooru-san started off,” and the likes. And it’s a pretty big insult because, although, yes, their music and styles are rather similar, Tobio isn’t a very big fan of Oikawa’s voice. It sounds fake (not in the auto-tune way) and expressive of all the wrong things, almost custom-fit for the cheesy messages he sends for theoretical girls through his lyrics. He recalls how he’d mentioned something akin to that in an interview once, rather tactlessly. Kindaichi had yelled at him and had to do some major damage control after, but there was no helping the sudden sparking up of a rivalry between his devoted listeners and Oikawa’s, creating what people pathetically call ‘the greatest rift in all of idol history’.

Pretty bogus, if you ask Tobio. But he supposes he only has himself to blame for speaking so carelessly and paving the way for this ridiculous joint-project half-intended to repair their reputations.

“Don’t be rude when you meet,” Kindaichi reminds him as they walk board the elevator to the twentieth floor of the studio building.

“I’m not gonna attack him for being fake,” he replies. “It’s more likely he’d attack me for telling everyone he’s fake.”

“Yeah, well, don’t rise to his bait. I hear he’s not in very good at the ‘friendly’ department either.”

“What do you mean ‘either’?”

Kindaichi raises an eyebrow at him.

They’re met by a proper-looking man with a timidly-happy face as they enter the conference room, he and Oikawa arriving roughly at the same time and, for the most part, ignoring each other until interaction is absolutely necessary. Oikawa’s manager is the only one who seems completely amused by the situation; Tobio feels his own’s excessive tension even from feet away. He shoots Kindaichi a glance, tells him to calm down.

“It’s nice to meet you both,” the proper-looking man says, bowing graciously. “My name’s Ennoshita Chikara. I’ve been assigned as your producer for this project.”

“Ooh, Chikara’s a pretty name,” Oikawa says.

“Oh, thank you for saying so! But before anything else—“ He looks calm, but the way Ennoshita glances at Tobio and then Oikawa with a small smile and yet wide eyes tells Tobio he isn’t completely relaxed. “I think you two have yet to formally meet?”

Finally, he and Oikawa look at each other.

“I don’t really think that’s necessary,” Oikawa says, smiling all the way up to his eyes. Fake. “After all, who doesn’t know Kageyama Tobio-san, the biggest breakout star of the decade?”

Tobio doesn’t really know what to say to that. “Uh, thank you,” he chooses after a while, though he highly doubts Oikawa intended to pay him any actual compliments. “I know you as well.”

“Oh, I know you do.”

“Okay!” Ennoshita claps his hands together, pulls his seat out. “Why don’t we all get cozy and start the preliminaries?”

The preliminaries turn out to be a discussion about what’s already been discussed. Management has given this a lot of thought already, it seems, and all the plans are already set in stone, simply waiting to be promulgated to those whom they actually concern. Ennoshita talks about their similar viewership, sounding very professional and yet somehow Tobio is able to tell he’d rather go home than get paid to do anything he’s currently doing, and that the Big Decision-makers™ have seen it fit for the two of them to record a single together, a duet, as an address to the members of that viewership.

It’s going to be a cheesy love song about pretty eyes and butterflies, Tobio laments the more Ennoshita drones on about the specifics. He props an elbow on the table and rests his jaw against his own palm, sneaks a glance at Oikawa to see how he’s taking any of the news. Their eyes lock immediately but Oikawa quickly tears his gaze away the moment Tobio’s lands on him. Tobio only frowns and tries to pay attention to Ennoshita.

Tries, definitely, because other than the fact that he can’t be any less interested in whatever this collaboration entails, he sometimes feels Oikawa watching him—not for too long, but stealing glances every now and again for whatever reason. His manager seems to notice as well; the sleepy-eyed man once pokes Oikawa in the temple and directs his eyes forward rather than to the side, Tobio sees from his peripheral vision. But the sneaky looks continue.

Exasperated, Tobio looks to him as well, catches him in the act of staring Tobio head to toe (or in this case, head to elbow) with a disgusted frown on his face. Oikawa meets his eyes for a brief moment before he’s rolling his and turning back to Ennoshita.

Tobio’s face pulls into a frown of its own.

“Uh,” Ennoshita says loudly, thoroughly capturing Tobio’s attention. “Okay, um—I’m not gonna mince words. I know that you two don’t exactly get along, despite—you know—not really meeting until today, and I know you’d rather not be here, but I think we should all be a little more proactive about this. I mean, there’s benefits. Money.” He rubs two fingers together. “And anyway, there’s a lot you have to know about each other; I’m sure you’re both pleasant people.” Tobio hears Kindaichi make a small noise; his frown deepens. “I hope we get along from here on out.”

Oikawa looks like he wants to murder Tobio with solely his eyes; Tobio works to make sure he looks the same.

If anyone had told Chikara that his next big project would be one involving Kageyama Tobio and Oikawa Tooru at the same time he would have fixed up his documents and passport and flown to another continent for an indefinite period of time. They’re big names, very big names, and working with them is just the boost his career needs, but no matter what insane spike in profit the studio authorities see, he doesn’t think anything can compensate for the emotional turmoil and confusion that comes with that.

Oikawa is charming—or at least, he’s trying really hard to be, but Chikara’s met enough questionable personalities to know when words and actions are genuine or not. He’s the complete opposite of Kageyama, who’s nothing but blunt and real, and having them together in the same place for more than thirty seconds, especially given that controversial interview months and months ago, honestly feels more like a babysitting job than anything.

He isn’t surprised when the song he’s given to work with is something by Tanaka Ryuunosuke, a long-time friend of Chikara’s and also the cheesiest Japanese romantic lyricist known to man, and that it speaks about comparing some girl’s beauty to the sensations of music, because that’s the image they’re going for: that Oikawa and Kageyama are sweet, loving men who’ll take care of you if you give them the chance, that they’re absolute dreamboats, that you want to be with them and they want to be with you.

Watching them try to out-baritone each other during breaks does nothing but destroy that image.

Still, recording gets done, the new single is produced, and Chikara is able to feel freedom and happiness, keeping the knowledge that his work is done and that his little starlings are going to shooting the video for a good few days very, very close to his heart.

All of that goes out the window, however, when he gets a call from both Matsukawa and Kindaichi, asking him to come to the shooting sessions for the sake of mediating between the two troublesome idols because, according to the two managers, he’s apparently very good at it. He has no choice but to sigh, wonder when his title had gone from Producer Ennoshita to Babysitter Ennoshita, and then agree. As a favour to the both of them, he thinks, for being the only agreeable people he’s seen in the last few weeks.

It’s not like they’re always fighting outright. It seems like it would be in both their personalities, but neither of them have ever raised their voice or gotten anything close to physical. They’re subtle and discreet in their exasperation towards each other—arguments always muttered under the breath or stapled to a malicious glare or rolling of eyes. They work well enough together in the eyes of the video director, a very imaginative man named Nishinoya Yuu who has always taken it upon himself to record videos for Tanaka’s music, and he’s absolutely ecstatic when he’s reviewing the day’s footage.

“The camera loves these two,” he tells Chikara, grinning. “They look good together.”

Chikara sneaks a peak at the shot, one of Kageyama and Oikawa by the side of a canal, comfortably leaning against each other’s backs, and has to agree.

There’s nothing less than an absolute revolution when the single and video are finally released. It tops the charts, stays there for weeks on end, plays on the radio and on TV and sounds from the mouths of girls both young and old every opportunity it can get. And those opportunities are numerous, Chikara finds, when the supposed ‘benefits’ of such an ambitious project come rolling in. The once-loyalist Kageyama fans and once-loyalist Oikawa fans are converted, and the audience has doubled for the both of them, as predicted. Word on the street was that a new fan club was underway, one dedicated to the friendship that the two idols had allegedly formed. A small section of that club is dedicated to fantasizing about their romantic affairs.

Fans are crazy, Chikara thinks, and Oikawa and Kageyama tell him the same thing when they, individually, text him in the evenings. They and their managers have taken to communicating with Chikara outside of work recently, and Chikara appreciates that his field has given him some strange new friends, but he can’t help but wonder whether or not they communicate with each other, like their fans probably wish they do.

Merchandise is crafted and sold, live events and interviews and meet-ups are arranged, and Kageyama and Oikawa (and Chikara, because they keep asking him to come) are forced to see each other more often than they wish. On TV, performing their song live before a crowd, Chikara is always led to think how beautifully they seem to match each other, almost as if they’re made to be standing together, filling each other’s holes in a way Chikara has never seen any other dueting pairs accomplish before. Perhaps it’s part of why they appeal to listeners so well; people always enjoy other people getting along, no matter what’s actually happening behind the scenes they’re permitted to see.

And right at the height of this revolution, Chikara is once again called in by the big guns for a ‘friendly chat’. It’s a long one, definitely, complete with an assessment of their past successes and then an invitation to create some new ones. Chikara barely has enough time to compose another face when the words, “There’s going to be a new project,” are being thrown into his face, and then he’s being introduced to Terushima Yuuji (the new songwriter he’ll be working with, well-known for his synth-pop, catchy remixes, and erotic themes; Chikara is already nervous) and being given a quick demo of the new song he’ll be having his idols record.

And then he wants to throw himself out the window.

“Okay,” Chikara says as Oikawa arranges himself on his lounge chair. The song they’re about to rehearse is controversial (very controversial) and though both Kageyama and Oikawa had both reacted violently upon hearing the intro alone, they’re still professionals after all, and what management wants, management gets. Kageyama sits across him on another soft seat, studiously examining the sheet music he has in his hands. “I’m gonna play the backing track now. The chorus for this song is gonna require a lot of editing, since you obviously can’t say all those lines in a single breath, but feel free to sing what you can for now. Ready?”

“I was born ready,” Oikawa says.

“Yes,” Kageyama says.

“Good. I’ll start it up.”

I'm a person who is highly intuitive and all, and I can just look at a person and know that they aren't the one. I had a few significant dreams the past few days, but in the end I'm a person who doesn't trust or believe in dreams because they are just random thoughts playing out. I am kind of tired thinking about finding love. I had very significant feelings for someone in the past because he was different than anyone else I ever saw (kinda fresh out of a heartbreak). Now I feel better and energized in other areas of life. But I have little to no thoughts about finding love.

When I see the white heart, I do get this like feeling you may be here on a highly spiritual mission, like I see angels, not saying you are one but that you seem to be here to help humanity in some capacity and I think whomever you’re partnered with would have a similar purpose, I think you do have someone connected to you, because of the level of understanding you need to be here on this sort of mission, but I’m not sure if you know this person and I think they aren’t what you expect, I’m getting dark hair and skin, like dark brown sort of like Indian, they may be from India or somewhere in Southeast Asia or they may be tied to ideas from there like really big on yoga, Theravada Buddhism, Hinduism, Vedic astrology, I think they spend a lot of time meditating, like I’m seeing a Tibetan monk, I don’t think they are one but they approach life like one, very calm, very detached in a positive way, very much someone who sees the value and power of spiritual pursuits, I really get Indian vibes, like I’m hearing that accent in my head, and I’m thinking of Indian food, seeing the Taj Mahal. This person is very spiritually advanced and when you meet them, they may share an extremely hard life story with you but this experience has given them deep wisdom. I think they will actually help you develop more in your spirituality and it’s part of why you come together, oh I think maybe you open a school, maybe your counterpart is gonna be a guru like Thich Nhat Hanh (look into his teachings and books if you haven’t) and I think you may be instrumental in this, you may lead classes, help make videos or marketing materials, but like I see you both in white in front of a garden smiling like you would on a website welcoming people to your school, this feels like it’s not in India but the west so maybe Europe or America, Canada, beautiful colorful flowers and gardens, wow, you both are at peace and very fulfilled and joyful and you will be teaching others how to get there.

Hi, may I have a ship for Stranger Things? I go by she/her and am bi with no preference, so any gender is fine.

I’m about 5’5, dark blue eyes, medium length hair thats kinda too dark to be dirty blonde but not so dark that its light brown with slightly lighter blonde highlights throughout. Ive been told I typically wear what would be considered 90s type of style but leaning away from more feminine things tho I’m not opposed to dresses and all. 

I do get pretty anxious when thrown in certain situations rather that be talking to a group of people or just one person. But on occasion and definitely when I get to know someone I never stop talking. I am a ranter and rambler which means I could be ranting about something that happened and then start talking about something else that may or may not be related to the original subject. Basically I will always find something to talk about though I do enjoy listening to other people talk. I am considered the mom friend because I tend to be the most logical. Im also a very determined, stubborn person who usually is kinda pessimistic but still has a huge imagination. And despite all the anxiety I am usually a relatively confident person and am not afraid to take up for anyone I care about. Also I am pretty good in school despite having a kinda bad memory. Also an INTJ, Sagittarius, and Ravenclaw. 

I absolutely love writing and have for the longest time rather that be random original stories I make up or the various fanfics I have(lol). I also love drawing and painting and recently realized I’m actually pretty good at making art related to animals and the occasional landscape. I’ve also been a big music fan since I was a kid, I honestly dont know what I would do without it. I also really enjoy reading when I get the chance, like I could spend hours getting consumed by whatever I’m reading. Which also travels into me when I’m watching things. What Does Our "Motivations” PSA Mean?

Can't the 'motive' simply be having/wanting to have diversity in one's work? Must there be an 'ulterior motive'? I can understand that there's a lot of stigma and stereotypes and bad influence that might lead to someone trynna add marginalized groups into their stories for wrong reasons, but people that have those bad intentions certainly won't be asking for advice on how to write good representation in the first place. Idk its just been something that seemed really discouraging to me to reach out myself, knowing i'll automatically be assigned ulterior motives that i don't have and will probably have to justify why i want to add diversity to my story as if i'm comitting some sort of crime. I don't expect you guys to change your blog or respond to this or even care all that much, I'm probably just ranting into a void. I'm just curious if theres any reason to this that I haven't realized exists I suppose. I don't want y'all to take this the wrong way because I do actually love and enjoy your blog's advice in spite of my dumb griping. Cheers :))

We assume this is in reference to the following PSA:

PSA to all of our users - Motivation Matters: This lack of clarity w/r to intent has been a general issue with many recent questions. Please remember that if you don’t explain your motivations and what you intend to communicate to your audience with your plot choices, character attributes, world-building etc., we cannot effectively advise you beyond the information you provide. We Are Not Mind Readers. If, when drafting these questions, you realize you can’t explain your motivations, that is likely a hint that you need to think more on the rationales for your narrative decisions. My recommendation is to read our archives and articles on similar topics for inspiration while you think. I will be attaching this PSA to all asks with similar issues until the volume of such questions declines. 

We have answered this in three parts.

1. Of Paved Roads and Good Intentions

Allow me to give you a personal story, in solidarity towards your feelings:

When I began writing in South Asia as an outsider, specifically in the Kashmir and Lahore areas, I was doing it out of respect for the cultures I had grown up around. I did kathak dance, I grew up on immigrant-cooked North Indian food, my babysitters were Indian. I loved Mughal society, and every detail of learning about it just made me want more. The minute you told me fantasy could be outside of Europe, I hopped into the Mughal world with two feet. I was 13. I am now 28.

And had you asked me, as a teenager, what my motives were in giving my characters’ love interests blue or green eyes, one of them blond hair, my MC having red-tinted brown hair that was very emphasized, and a whole bunch of paler skinned people, I would have told you my motives were “to represent the diversity of the region.” 

I’m sure readers of the blog will spot the really, really toxic and colourist tropes present in my choices. If you’re new here, then the summary is: giving brown people “unique” coloured eyes and hair that lines up with Eurocentric beauty standards is an orientalist trope that needs to be interrogated in your writing. And favouring pale skinned people is colourist, full stop.

Did that make me a bad person with super sneaky ulterior motives who wanted to write bad representation? No.

It made me an ignorant kid from the mostly-white suburbs who grew up with media that said brown people had to “look unique” (read: look as European as possible) to be considered valuable.

And this is where it is important to remember that motives can be pure as you want, but you were still taught all of the terrible stuff that is present in society. Which means you’re going to perpetuate it unless you stop and actually question what is under your conscious motive, and work to unlearn it. Work that will never be complete.

I know it sounds scary and judgemental (and it’s one of the reasons we allow people to ask to be anonymous, for people who are afraid). Honestly, I would’ve reacted much the same as a younger writer, had you told me I was perpetuating bad things. I was trying to do good and my motives were pure, after all! But after a few years, I realized that I had fallen short, and I had a lot more to learn in order for my motives to match my impact. Part of our job at WWC is to attempt to close that gap.

We aren’t giving judgement, when we ask questions about why you want to do certain things. We are asking you to look at the structural underpinnings of your mind and question why those traits felt natural together, and, more specifically, why those traits felt natural to give to a protagonist or other major character.

I still have blond, blue-eyed characters with sandy coloured skin. I still have green-eyed characters. Because teenage me was right, that is part of the region. But by interrogating my motive, I was able to devalue those traits within the narrative, and I stopped making those traits shorthand for “this is the person you should root for.” 

It opened up room for me to be messier with my characters of colour, even the ones who my teenage self would have deemed “extra special.” Because the European-associated traits (pale hair, not-brown-eyes) stopped being special. After years of questioning, they started lining up with my motive of just being part of the diversity of the region.

Motive is important, both in the conscious and the subconscious. It’s not a judgement and it’s not assumed to be evil. It’s simply assumed to be unquestioned, so we ask that you question it and really examine your own biases.

2. Motivations Aren't Always "Ulterior"

You can have a positive motivation or a neutral one or a negative one. Just wanting to have diversity only means your characters aren't all white and straight and cis and able-bodied -- it doesn't explain why you decided to make this specific character specifically bi and specifically Jewish (it me). Yes, sometimes it might be completely random! But it also might be "well, my crush is Costa Rican, so I gave the love interest the same background", or "I set it in X City where the predominant marginalized ethnicity is Y, so they are Y". Neither of these count as ulterior motives. But let's say for a second that you did accidentally catch yourself doing an "ulterior." Isn't that the point of the blog, to help you find those spots and clean them up?

Try thinking of it as “finding things that need adjusting” rather than “things that are bad” and it might get less scary to realize that we all do them, subconsciously. Representation that could use some work is often the product of subconscious bias, not deliberate misrepresentation, so there's every possibility that someone who wants to improve and do better didn't do it perfectly the first time.

3. Dress-Making as a Metaphor

I want to echo Lesya’s sentiments here but also provide a more logistical perspective. If you check the rubber stamp guide here and the “Motivation matters” PSA above, you’ll notice that concerns with respect to asker motivation are for the purposes of providing the most relevant answer possible.

It is a lot like if someone walks into a dressmaker’s shop and asks for a blue dress/ suit (Back when getting custom-made clothes was more of a thing) . The seamstress/ tailor is likely to ask a wide variety of questions:

What material do you want the outfit to be made of?

Where do you plan to wear it?

What do you want to highlight?

How do you want to feel when you wear it?

Let’s say our theoretical customer is in England during the 1920s. A tartan walking dress/ flannel suit for the winter is not the same as a periwinkle, beaded, organza ensemble/ navy pinstripe for formal dress in the summer. When we ask for motivations, we are often asking for exactly that: the specific reasons for your inquiry so we may pinpoint the most pertinent information.

The consistent problem for many of the askers who receive the PSA is they haven’t even done the level of research necessary to know what they want to ask of us. It would be like if our English customer in the 1920s responded, “IDK, some kind of blue thing.” Even worse,  WWC doesn’t have the luxury of the back-and-forth between a dressmaker and their clientele. If our asker doesn’t communicate all the information they need in mind at the time of submission, we can only say, “Well, I’m not sure if this is right, but here’s something. I hope it works, but if you had told us more, we could have done a more thorough job.”

Answering questions without context is hard, and asking for motivations, by which I mean the narratives, themes, character arcs and other literary devices that you are looking to incorporate, is the best way for us to help you, while also helping you to determine if your understanding of the problem will benefit from outside input. Because these asks are published with the goal of helping individuals with similar questions, the PSA also serves to prompt other users.

I note that asking questions is a skill, and we all start by asking the most basic questions (Not stupid questions, because to quote a dear professor, “There are no stupid questions.”). Unfortunately, WWC is not suited for the most basic questions. To this effect, we have a very helpful FAQ and archive as a starting point. Once you have used our website to answer the more basic questions, you are more ready to approach writing with diversity and decide when we can actually be of service. This is why we are so adamant that people read the FAQ. Yes, it helps us, but it also is there to save you time and spare you the ambiguity of not even knowing where to start.

The anxiety in your ask conveys to me a fear of being judged for asking questions. That fear is not something we can help you with, other than to wholeheartedly reassure you that we do not spend our unpaid, free time answering these questions in order to assume motives we can’t confirm or sit in judgment of our users who, as you say, are just trying to do better.

Yes, I am often frustrated when an asker’s question makes it clear they haven’t read the FAQ or archives. I’ve also been upset when uncivil commenters have indicated that my efforts and contributions are not worth their consideration. However, even the most tactless question has never made me think, “Ooh this person is such a naughty racist. Let me laugh at them for being a naughty racist. Let me shame them for being a naughty racist. Mwahaha.”

What kind of sad person has time for that?*

Racism is structural. It takes time to unlearn, especially if you’re in an environment that doesn’t facilitate that process to begin with. Our first priority is to help while also preserving our own boundaries and well-being. Though I am well aware of the levels of toxic gas-lighting and virtue signaling that can be found in various corners of online writing communities in the name of “progressivism*”, WWC is not that kind of space. This space is for discussions held in good faith: for us to understand each other better, rather than for one of us to “win” and another to “lose.”

Just as we have good faith that you are doing your best, we ask that you have faith that we are trying to do our best by you and the BIPOC communities we represent.

Jealousy [Genshin Impact]

Kaeya Alberich

— I can see him as someone whose jealous not that often. Like he’s actually more amuse at the fact that someone is flirting with you when its obvious you’re dating the cryo-wielder knight.

— This guy is so chill (pun not intended) ngl. He leaves you be because he knows you can defend yourself from them. Though he will tease you afterwards.

— It just shows how much trusts he has in you. He loves to initiate affectionate things like hugging or kissing or picking you up bridal style. So pretty much everyone in Mondstadt knows you two are together by this.

— But if he sees that someone is clearly making you uncomfortable, its time for him to intervene. He will smoothly slide to your side, with a hand on your waist pressing you to his side, while smiling (or smirking) at the person. He will act his cheery self until that person takes a hint and go away.

— If you started hanging out with Diluc more often, he wouldn’t get jealous at all. In fact, he encourages you two to hang out. He loves the idea of his (adopted) brother and partner getting along. Though if you start hanging out with the pyro-weilder more often, Kaeya will surely drag you away to make you notice him. Leaving an bemused Diluc behind.

— Overall, Kaeya isn’t gonna be jealous, even if you tried.

Diluc Ragnvindr

— I can see him being more of a jealous-type than Kaeya but not too much. Like he trusts you to not leave for another.

— If you start to hang out with opposite gender, Diluc would leave it be. He lets you have the freedom you want. But if he sees that you’ve been hanging out with them a bit too much, then he’ll get jealous.

— How is he when he’s jealous? He grumbles while glaring at the person from afar. You can also see a pout on his face as he stares (reads: glares) down at the person. This usually leads to someone (ie: Kaeya) to tease him, much to Diluc’s dismay.

— Diluc wouldn’t say anything about it, since we all know he’s not much of a talker. He usually do something to attract your attention to get his daily dose of affection from you (like tugging on the back of your shirt, twirling a strand of your hair, or just standing in front of you). But unlike before, when he’s jealous, he’s much more affectionate. Like he’ll initiate a hug or kiss (or maybe sex) with you. But expect him to be blushing while doing it.

— You can instantly know when he’s jealous. Please don’t tease him though lol

— He is not a person who easily meddle with other people, especially your’s, affairs. But when he sees that someone is clearly making you uncomfortable, he wouldn’t hesitate to stand in front of you and stare at the person. No matter who it is, they’ll take a hint and run away (well, except for people like Kaeya or Lisa).

— The person he’s jealous of is none other than Kaeya. He is instantly a bad mood when he sees his adopted brothed talking to his significant other. He likes the idea yes, but he prefers with distance and not THAT close! He would definitely push Kaeya back, pick you up and bring you somewhere (preferrably at his house) while leaving a laughing Kaeya.

— Overall, it’s easy to make him jealous.

Venti

— He’s an easily-jealous guy, even though he’s a God 😐. Out of all the guys here, he’s the one whose easily jealous. (Let’s hope that this wouldn’t turn into a Yandere one 😐)

— Venti spends the last 500 years all by himself, so of course he wants your undivided attention. But he knows that its important in the human cycle to gain and lose people, so whenever you hang out with other people, he’ll pout and sulk but he understands.

— But he usually just join you and the person you’re hanging out with, it goes two ways. One, the other person being uncomfortable in Venti’s presence or, two, a trio hang out :)

— Venti is jealous of most people since he knows the sad truth that you’ll someday leave him to find another of your kin or die. Venti is scared of these possibilities. And that resulted in him being so insecure.

— He might comes off as clingy but please don’t leave him 🥺 He just doesn’t want you to leave him just yet.

— Believe it or not, he’s actually jealous of the Traveler, Aether (the male protagonist). For some reason, whenever he sees you two together, it sets a horrible feeling in his stomach. He hates it.

— Venti loves affection, just like Kaeya, but much more extreme. So expect him suddenly kissing you out of nowhere and hugging you unexpectedly. If you’re shorter than him, expect him to wrap his arms around your waist with his head on top of yours and sway you left and right. I can’t help but gush at how cute it all seems.

— Anyway, if he sees someone making you uncomfortable, he will appear next to you, smiling innocently, as he begans to talk with that person. I don’t think anyone would take him seriously so whoever that person is would ignore him. Venti would probably get annoyed at that, so you might need to drag him away before he could give that person a “piece of his mind”.

— If he sees you hanging out with Aether, he will definitely sulk or whine about it. If he sees someone else, let’s say Diluc, he would pout but wouldn’t whine. He grew to respect Master Diluc ever since the Dvalin’s incident. Besides, free drink :D

— Overall, he’s easily jealous and it wouldn’t be hard to make him jealous.

Razor

— I recently got him and just got his mission (bc I just finished the Dvalin’s Prologue thing), so yeah. Sorry if he’s a bit OOC.

— He doesn’t understand the emotions very well, since you know, he was raised by wolves. But I feel like he’ll be easily jealous, he just doesn’t understand what that feeling is.

— So if you start to hanging out with other people, he would feel lonely and (actually) envious. He will pout but wouldn’t call your attention, instead, just watches you from the shadows.

— Razor can’t talk fluently and actually doesn’t like to talk since it’s hard for him. So he prefers just doing the action, albeit similar to Diluc in a way. Though you might need to teach him how to do some things about being a couple.

— He’s jealous of everyone, not even the same gender is out of his list. He’s jealous because of how fun you seem to be having with them than with him, and how you look so animated while talking.

— Razor’s an insecure wolf boi, so he might copy what other people are doing with you. Like intertwining your hands, hugging you from behind and other things. He might also start giving you things like meat, flowers, etc.

— You might need to reassure him that you wouldn’t leave him all because of his “unique” traits.

— If he sees someone making you uncomfortable, he would raise a brow while frowning, clearly not knowing what’s happening. Yet despite this, he decided to go near you and ask if you need help. The other person might mock him because of his “language” and appearance. This time, it’ll be him trying to drag you away.

— If he sees you hanging out with someone else, he would follow you and that person around. He’s actually quite sneaky when following you, with a few close-calls. Though you might catch on once you notice a strand of light blue hair sticking out of a rock.

— Please just ask him to join :)

— Overall, he’s a jealous-envious kind of person.

Well it’s been a while since I posted so I thought I’d go all out on this blog. I’m going to discuss, soul connections, astrology, inner work and the 7 chakras and a little bit of tarot.

In 2018 I began going through another spiritual awakening, I stumbled across the term twin flames and I was quite taken back by it. I always grew up thinking we all had one soul mate and it was a fairytale kind of love but the deeper I dove into spirituality my beliefs began to change.

We can have several soul mates but only one twin flame. The common theory for twin flames is that the soul splits and reincarnations into two different bodies for soul evolution. A twin flame is a mirror soul, a reflection of you , the good and the bad. Your twin will shed light on everything that you need to heal and what you try to run from and eventually they will help you to ascend. There is no other connection like it. They usually come in and out your life triggering different stages of spiritual awakenings and to ensure you continue doing the work you signed up before reincarnating on Earth.

The twin flame journey isn’t easy, there are many different stages and there is usually a runner and chaser dynamic going on. One of the main lessons is to learn that twin flames will always be connected it’s only their ego that separates them from each other.

🖤A soul mate is usually a relatively easy relationship, you grow together and are able to overcome challenges, the relationship brings stability, peace and love they are usually a life partner that you settle down with.

With MF and MGK both having Taurus sun’s, they will share similar personality traits which will bring harmony. However their rising signs are quite different since Megan has Capricorn rising and MGK has Gemini, the Gemini energy and sun in his 11 denfentily gives MGK more an edgy style.

The moon represents our emotions and connections we have with others and since it’s touching his south node this can indicate an instant connection, familiarity and deep bond.

🖤 Jupiter expands and blesses everything it touches, if aspected positively. MGK Venus in Pisces is exactly conjunct MF’s Jupiter in Pisces - this aspect would give a dreamy, fairy tale kind of love and with a dash of Jupiter for sure it would be expand their love for each other.

🖤 MGK Alma which is another term for soul is conjunct MF’s Neptune in Capricorn in her 12th house. As mentioned earlier the 12th house is known as the karmic house. Capricorn’s ruler is Saturn which also known for representing karma in astrology. Now let’s switch it round. Their Neptune conjunct Alma also falls into MF’s 7th house. Now taking in both placements, I would say this is a spiritual connection.

Fate, destiny and karma

The vertex is used in astrology to identify fated events, karma and destiny. Scorpio is considered the most interned sign of the zodiac because of the powerful energy Pluto carries.

Her Pluto is conjunct his vertex in his 5th house of fun, dating and romance. This is likely to be a life changing relationship filled with passion and. They will be strongly drawn to each other and with this conjunction also falling into MF 9th house, this union would more than likely transform her beliefs and lead her to search for spirtual guidance to make sense of their connection.

It is not clear whether they are actually twin flames but they are likely to share a soul connection. It will be interesting to see how this relationship plays out in the future as no twin flame journey is a walk in the park.

Astrology can not determine who your twin is.

Every twins journey is different, some are meant to be together in this life and some are not it all depends on the soul contract, all twins will have different strengths, weaknesses and connections which will show up differently in each individual chart. Cobra Kai: Johnny and Robby and their missed ‘proud dad’ moments

I’ll start by saying Robby is my boy, and his relationship (or lack thereof) with Johnny is one I’m very invested in and get emotional about. And just something I’ve thought of before in previous seasons but really started paying attention to this season is (one of) the sad, tragic parts of their relationship: All the ways that Johnny would really love Robby and love/be proud that Robby’s his kid if he actually knew his son and paid attention to him and spent any real time with him. I see so many scenes and missed opportunities where you know if Johnny was there with Robby or at least paying attention to what he’s doing, he’d be having these ‘God, I love that kid’ or ‘Damn, he really is my kid’ kind of moments.

And like I know Johnny fears Robby ever turning out like him, but that’s because he’s got so much self-loathing that he only sees (and is told by everyone about) all the bad ways that Robby could take after him. He doesn’t think about the good or harmless traits that Robby could inherit from him.

Just a forewarning, this turned out a lot longer than expected, but here are some of the ways/moments I’ve seen in the show where Johnny would definitely be a proud dad:

Robby’s natural athleticism and karate talent: Johnny loves karate and values being badass. That’s a given. In season one when Daniel’s started training Robby in karate, he says the kid is a natural. He was obviously good enough to make it all the way to the finals in the All Valley in his first time at the tournament. The AVT is also the first time that Johnny gets to see Robby’s fighting skills and how good he is, and I would really hope he’s feeling proud of him, among his other conflicted feelings. Then in the next couple seasons we get to see Robby in some good fights where he kicks ass against his opponents: him and Sam at the mall vs. CK, taking down Shawn and his bullies in juvy (where he ran up the wall and did a flip), and taking down all the CK kids by himself in 4x01. If Johnny could have seen any of those fights, you know he’d be proud of Robby kicking ass like that. The best example is seeing Robby’s performance in the second AVT though. Both in the skills competition and the matches, Robby was a total beast and kicked some serious ass. He may not have won the final match, but that doesn’t downplay how well he did all tournament. We finally get to see Johnny acknowledge this in their last scene in the dojo. Johnny (quietly) proudly tells Robby he kicked ass that day, which is like one of the highest compliments in Johnny Lawrence’s book. So in spite of all the other crap going on, you just gotta feel like Johnny is so proud of Robby and so happy that he inherited his natural fighting talent/athleticism, and when he’s watching him compete a part of him is thinking like ‘My kid just did that. My kid’s badass.’

Robby’s attitude/sass/pushing people’s buttons: We’ve seen on several occasions that Robby isn’t afraid to say what’s on his mind and call people out, especially when it comes to the adults who piss him off and let him down. He’s definitely got an attitude and will sass back or mouth off to almost anyone, which we usually see directed at Johnny. One of my favorite examples: When he snarks back at Terry Silver at the AVT, “Do you want to fight him?”, and Silver nearly murders the teen on sight. We also see him doing stuff to purposely piss people off and push their buttons. That’s how his whole story started on the show: he got involved with Daniel LaRusso because he knew if his dad found out, he’d be pissed. Do you know who else has a similar effect of making other people upset and who likes to push people’s buttons? Johnny. It’s no wonder the first time Kreese ever meets Robby and the boy responds to his story about Johnny with “Cool story…try telling it to someone who gives a shit” that Kreese just laughs and tells him you’re [Johnny’s] son all right. So if we can finally get some less angry scenes of Johnny and Robby together and Johnny gets to see Robby’s attitude/sass directed at people other than him, you gotta think he’d love it. If he had gotten to see that interaction with Silver at the tournament, Johnny would’ve been both proud/impressed and worried about Robby mouthing off to a known psycho. (No sense of self-preservation found in this kid)

Robby being ready to punch Daniel the first time he met him: This one’s pretty simple. We know how Johnny and Daniel’s first (and present day) interactions go. If Daniel ever told Johnny that Robby was ready to hit him the first time he tried talking to him, you know Johnny would be so amused and have such a proud dad moment. ‘Ready to punch LaRusso on sight? That’s my boy.’

Robby’s cool kid/bad boy vibes (part 1): Johnny’s all about being cool and masculine and badass. He dislikes anything he thinks is nerdy. The kids who joined his Cobra Kai and later Eagle Fang are what you would consider to be the nerdy, misfit, social outcast type. We see Johnny mocking them for this so much. That hasn’t changed after four seasons. Then you have Robby with his ‘90s heartthrob good looks, long hair, charm, flippant attitude, and delinquency. When he actually hangs around kids his own age, he can easily make friends and get along well with them. On the surface, he’s like the complete opposite of the kids in Johnny’s dojo. The kind of effortlessly cool kid that some of them (think Hawk) would aspire to be. This is the kind of cool, confident kid Johnny was trying to mold his students into. The kind of teen (and adult) he believes he was/is. And it’s all right there in his own kid. Minus the dropping out of school and committing crimes, you’d think he’d be loving all of this about Robby. Unlike some of the ‘nerds’ he teaches, his kid is cool like him.

Robby’s cool kid/bad boy vibes (part 2): This one is kind of an off-shoot of the last one. We’re gonna focus on prom night here though. Again, Johnny prides himself on being cool, badass, and good with women. He likes to think the same about his son, which we can see when he tells Ali that Robby’s a “heartbreaker” or when he thinks Molly is some hot chick that Robby was hooking up with. At the time, we didn’t really see any of that sort of behavior out of Robby. And he was super hesitant going into his relationship with Sam, which actually ended in him having his heart broken. But I digress. For prom, while we see some of the other Miyagi-Do/Eagle Fang kids either flying solo or going home after having their nights ruined or having to try hard to make their move with their date, Robby had a good time and ended the night by hooking up with Tory in Silver’s convertible Ferrari (with the top down) while parked outside near a carnival. Hot girl? Check. Sweet car? Check. Hooking up with said hot girl in the sweet car? Check and check. If Johnny and Robby were close enough for Robby to ever tell Johnny about this, you know he’d be damn well impressed with his kid. Just look how excited he was when Miguel had a successful first date with Sam. It’d be another “Tell me you’re the man” moment, or at least a ‘That’s my boy’ proud dad moment.

Robby being dramatic and his shirtlessness: We’ve seen that Robby can have a flair for the dramatic just like his old man. Him getting so frustrated with his little gi top that he just rips it off mid-fight rather than re-tie it, that was really over-the-top. But we know Johnny’s prone to being dramatic about so many things as well. He also has a history of going shirtless (cue the shirtless beach photos of William being canon) or wearing his slutty gi (RIP). Robby has had at least one shirtless moment each season too, as well as the low-cut v-neck he wears for his ‘80s night costume. So when Robby ripped off his gi top during the AVT final, I’d like to think this was more of a ‘Being dramatic and fighting shirtless? Damn, he really is my kid’ kind of moment for Johnny.

Robby being a more quiet, introverted kid: I believe Johnny and Robby have it in common that they can be the quiet, man of few words type. Like if you think of Daniel, Miguel, or I’m gonna say Mary Mouser who plays Sam, they can all be these super friendly, talkative people. It’s one of the reasons Johnny finds Daniel to be an annoying twerp. When Miguel first meets Johnny and asks him to teach him some karate, he’s like this sunshine, bubbly, talkative kid going up against this gruff, quiet, asshole type who just wanted to be left alone. He eventually won Johnny over, but that easily could have been something that annoyed him. With Robby though, we see that he’s a lot more like Johnny in that he’s the quiet, keep to himself, more introverted kind of kid. If Johnny and Robby do start getting along better, you could easily see them just chilling out in his apartment, doing some karate, or riding along in the car and not needing to talk all the time because they’re both comfortable with the quiet time. And I think Johnny would like/appreciate that in Robby. It could be a nice break from the LaRusso’s, and occasionally Miguel’s, more talkativeness.

Other similarities between Robby and Johnny: These couple examples aren’t as long, so I’m just gonna group them together. First, since we talked a little bit about their apparel, we can see that Johnny and Robby have similar clothing styles, when Robby’s dressing more for himself and not to impress anyone that is. They’ve got the band tees, the layered shirts, the plaid shirts, jeans, and sneaker-type shoes. They also both love music and have been seen to use it as a way to drown out bad things going on around them. There may even be some bands or genres they like that overlap.

Overall, I just think it’s so sad for both of them that Robby is basically the perfect kid that Johnny would want, but they barely know each other or spend any time together for Johnny to actually appreciate that fact. So Johnny’s missing out on this great son you know he’d really love, and Robby’s missing out on all that love and pride from his dad.
