“For most people, what is so painful about reading is that you read something and you don’t have anybody to share it with. In part what the book club opens up is that people can read a book and then have someone else to talk about it with. Then they see that a book can lead to the pleasure of conversation, that the solitary act of reading can actually be a part of the path to communion and community” ― Bell Hooks.

@nopeferatu and I are reading the 26-page short story on April 14th at 8:00 PM EDT. Come discuss isolation, longing, violence, and age!
We recommend seeing the film, but the discussion will be about the short story. DM me or Nickie if you're having trouble finding a copy.

Need to start a book club for people who like Dostoevsky, Kierkegaard, Kafka, Rilke, Nietzsche. Also just to hang out on a discord server or something and be friends. I would like a close little group of friends, God knows it’s a lonely world, but I don’t think it has to be.
I’ve been reading The Idiot and I’m desperate to share my outpouring of feelings with someone. :^)

I don't know if I'll do it but: would anyone be interested in The Man Who Was Thursday Thursday? It's such an underrated classic. It's a spy story, it's a comedy, it's cosmic horror, it's fantasy. I love it.
The chapters are quite short, so I'd post about half a chapter every Thursday. Please reblog and let me know if you're interested.

The Continuing Studies Program of Stanford University was stunned when 961 people attended its book club's free talk about "A Room of One's Own," Virginia Woolf's 1929 classic, in April 2023, in person or via Zoom. But then, it's not just any book club. German filmmaker Werner Herzog has been a speaker. Philip Roth agreed to an interview. The club always features panelists who are scholars or writers, who discuss a book before opening to audience questions. Ostensibly for the Stanford community, the club is in reality for anyone who wants to listen, since its talks are posted on the Another Look Book Club website and on YouTube.

I want to be in a book club 🥺 problem : I cannot find one. Looked for recent posts on here and only found one seemingly private book club.
*sigh* personally I'm usually most interested in:
- female authors writing Sci-fi (want to expand after discovering my adoration for Ursula K Le Guin)
- non fiction, self help/studies kind, not really memoirs
BUT I haven't been reading a lot and the point of a group is to change that and expand where my reading goes towards 🥺 And something I particularly want for this year is to read in French because I am losing vocabulary and it's panicking meeee. So I've been looking at classics but I'm open to more, especially if other people are excited about a specific book, It would be cool to read along.
ALSO highly interested in reading from more countries (as a side companion to educating myself a bit on cities of the world at random.)
Easier to say what I'm not interested in? YA, memoirs, historical fiction, horror (though Gothic is good with me), thriller, high fantasy.
I think what I want to read next is Piglet, by Lottie Hazell, so if anyone was interested in that, I could start there for a group read along. Genuinely let me know if you're interested, I'd be delighted.

We can’t choose what we inherit. But can we choose who we become?" Well, the poll results are in and for September we will be reading Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson. It was nominated on Goodreads for both best historical fiction and best debut novel in 2022 so I'm looking forward to diving in. There's still some time left in August, but we will kick off September first with our new book. Don't forget, if you would like an August Participation Award for the book Sea of Tranquility I am accepting pre-orders until Aug 30th!
