Other Mother: Overview and Oven Mitts

This Halloween costume came about from rummaging in my cosplay supply boxes, and finding a character that would fit my Halloween Costume Criteria:

It had to be comfortable

Relatively straight-forward to make

The supplies had to cost as little as possible

My inspiration sweater (which I ended up replacing with a better one I found at the local Goodwill) was a white turtle-neck sweater I had originally been saving for a Mable Pines sweater. I also realized the wig I had purchased for my Faith cosplay was extremely close to the Other Mother’s haircut when we first meet her in the film Coraline. I had a pair of my every-day sneakers I could use for her shoes, which just left the pants and her button eyes to make. Since I was going for Other Mother as how she looks when we first time Coraline meets her, I decided her chicken oven mitt would be a good additional prop since the rest of her costume was so simple.

Plain white quilted oven mitts proved to be more difficult to find than I expected - for some reason most people seem to enjoy color in their kitchens? I eventually settled on a pair I found on Amazon for about $10. They were the correct size with the quilting pattern, but the exterior was terry-cloth rather than smooth like in the movie, which would have been ideal. I made the patterns for the details by laying tracing paper on top of the mitts and drawing out the shapes I needed. The details themselves are made out of plain cotton solids and matching thread, with a bit of poly-fill to give the chicken’s crest enough body.

Contrary to how I would usually attach appliqué fabrics, in order to better match my reference I used a running stitch about 1/16″ away from the raw edge of the fabric to attach the eye, beak, and crest. This ensured the edges of the patches would be slightly frayed like they are in the movie. The eye itself I embroidered using a satin stitch, and I used a standard back-stitch in brown thread to make the mouth-line on its beak.

I had originally planned to make both mitts, but ran short on time and ended up only making the one for my costume. Maybe I’ll come back to it and finish the other one some day.

What a crazy epic weekend! Five days of friends and fun, four cosplays, three giant dinners out with everyone, an epic photo op, a ridiculous slumber party, a new tattoo, and not nearly enough selfies. To all the friends I saw over the weekend, old AND new - and all the friends I didn’t see because Fan Expo is such a huge show! - I love you all so much and thank you for making sure I had an epic, wonderful weekend.
