Cosmic Circus
Chapter 3
The lights started to dim and Y/n stopped talking right as they noticed, and so did a lot of people. Once the audience was quiet, Y/n and Oliver saw a blonde woman with a high ponytail walk into the center.”Alright, everyone, before we get started, I’d like to remind you of the rules here. First, do not try any of this unless you are a professional or you’re learning and have a professional present. Meaning that you shouldn’t try this at home, children.” She said. Quite a few people laughed at this, and so did Y/n. They didn’t usually get the whole “it’s funny cause it’s true” thing, but this was probably an exception since it made them giggle a bit.”Second, no trying to climb on the tent. You do not want to know how many times that has happened and you also don’t want to add another Talley mark. If you do, please leave. Third, don’t climb over the little wall separating you from the ring, especially when the animals are out.” The woman continued explaining the safety rules. Once she was done, the lights went out and two spotlights went on after a few minutes of darkness.
Two animatronic jesters dressed up appeared on two high platforms opposite of each other on either side of the ring. One of them had sun rays on his head and wore red ribbons with yellow bells on both hands, and the other had ribbons and bells too. The one with the sun rays had on a shirt with white puffs at the wrists, right at the ribbons and bells, and it’s plating was a lovely yellow. The collar of the shirt had red puff with white lining, and the sleeves were bright yellow. The pants were the type that you’d see some people wearing in the movie Aladdin, and also were bright yellow with red stripes and red puffs at the ankles with white lining. The shoes were curved at the tip, kind of like elf shoes, and were light brown with small suns painted on where the little bump at the ankles would be, and the eyes were completely white. The second had the exact same clothing design, but the art design was the opposite. Instead of red puffs with white lining, this one had dark blue puffs and white linings. The sleeves and rest of the shirt was a type of blue that was dark, but also light. Kind of like the night sky in a fantasy drawing. This one had a crescent moon on one side of its face and the rest was the same dark blue as the puffs. He had a nightcap on, and Y/n held back a snicker when the thought of how funny he’d look bald crossed their mind. Oliver pointed to them and leaned close to Y/n, to which Y/n assumed they wanted to talk to them and leaned down.”Sun and Moon!” He whispered, and he was rather quiet. He had a big smile on his face, and it was quickly becoming contagious to Y/n, so they smiled back and nodded. Now they were curious about the circus acts. There was a loud drumroll, and when the music started, S let himself fall backwards off the tall platform, which was higher than the audience’s seats.
The spotlight followed him, showing his double flip before catching the trapeze with his hands and swinging beneath the platform. As he swung back to where he caught the trapeze, he pulled his lower body up to hook his legs around it. When he swung back beneath the platform and above the audience’s seats, he smiled and waved to the people watching. Then he refocused himself while swinging back and held his arms out. Y/n hadn’t noticed Moon had jumped off until Sun caught him, the two of them now swinging from the same trapeze.
Down below, a small group of people have come out and started performing tricks such as juggling and spinning around on some kind of giant hoola hoop? (Is that how it’s spelled??) The movement with the hoops reminded Y/n of when they learned how to pole dance. It was kind of embarrassing, since they pretty much only wanted to learn how to spin around and hold themselves on a pole the way performers did. They never wanted to do anything…. that way. But two of their good friends who were a rapidly growing band knew how to do it after a long time, so they decided to teach them and understood why they wanted to learn. So they stayed clear from the acts that were implied. It was great, and Y/n still practices with them now. It was definitely difficult, but now it’s much easier.
After the performance, Y/n walked out with Oliver, who was nearly skipping, but wanted to hold their hand just to make sure they were there. Outside, most of the games and food stands were gone, and the main sources of light were the circus tent they just existed and the bright moon. It was only a half moon, but it’s faint lighting onto the ground was brighter compared to the night sky in the city. The moon was hardly ever visible with the many tall buildings, and its light could never shine through onto the ground with the city lights on all the time. Y/n and Oliver stopped after walking away from the tents, close to the main entrance and exit lined by the many fences that Y/n had dashed passed with their little cousin on their back earlier, and Y/n looked down at him with a smile. People passed by, some yawning.”Did you have fun?” They asked, already knowing the answer. Oliver jumped up and down in excitement for a moment.”Yes, yes, yes!! It was amazing!! Thank you so, so much!!” He said. He hugged their leg tight and paused his bouncing for a moment.”Thank you so much!!” Oliver exclaimed. Y/n picked him up and hugged him. Mission accomplished! They said in their head, little copies of themselves celebrating in their head with loud cheers. Oliver hugged back and smiled, resting his head on their right shoulder with his right cheek squishing a bit.
The feeling of shared love made Y/n forget all about everything negative in the world, now only focusing on how happy they were to be there with their little cousin.“We’re glad you had fun! So did we!” A cheerful voice said behind Y/n. Oliver peaked up and gasped as Y/n turned around. Oliver’s head turned as Y/n did so he could keep looking at the two figures behind them. They were the star acrobatics during the performance, Sun and Moon. Sun’s hands were clasped together and he had a big smile on his face, and Moon smiled as well with his arms behind his back.”We worked hard on the preparations so you’d get an amazing show!” Sun said, taking a few steps closer. Y/n still smiled, but was definitely ready to put Oliver behind them and throw themselves at the performer if he dared upset Oliver. Speaking of Oliver, he broke out of his small trance and kicked his legs a bit.”I did!!!” He exclaimed. Y/n looked at Oliver and then back at the performers with a smaller smile than Oliver, but it was still a happy one.”We both did, you two were excellent.” They said, much calmer than Oliver. Moon walked over to them with his hands and arms still behind his back and Y/n nearly took a step back and changed their demeanor. For a split second, Y/n saw their aunt, Oliver’s mother, and the memory of them protecting Oliver from her when she tried cutting him with the wine bottle he accidentally knocked over and broke. But they were brought back to reality just as quickly as they were taken away from it. Moon seemed quieter than Sun, who was bouncing, and brought out what was behind his back. It was two plushies of themselves.”I had noticed you two tried winning a plush, so I managed to get a pair for you.” He said.
Oliver gasped and looked at Y/n, which he often did when something like this happened to make sure it was okay since he was nearly kidnapped a few times, only one of them he knew he was in danger. Y/n nodded to him and he took the plushies, careful not to snatch so he didn’t seem rude.”Thank you so, so much!!” He said. Sun seemed to match his happiness because he started bouncing a bit and his rays spun around.”Of course, little friend! What’s your name?” Sun asked. Oliver hugged the plushies and looked at both animatronics. Y/n swore they saw anime sparkles for a second.”Oliver! And this is my cousin!” He said. Y/n held back a giggle, they both seemed so silly.”Your cousin? They look very pretty.” Moon said, giving a little bow to Y/n and smiling at them, to which Y/n bowed their head back since they were holding their cousin.”Charmed.” They said, not in a rude tone. Oliver tugged on their sleeve slightly to be put down and Y/n was careful not to drop them or wobble as they set him on the ground.
Sun bent his knees so he was eye level with him and opened his arms.”Before you two leave, how about a hug?” Sun asked. Oliver nearly squealed and held the plushies up to Y/n.”Can you hold them for a second, please?” He asked. Y/n nodded and took the plushies. Oliver rushed to Sun and hugged him, and Sun gladly returned the gesture. His rays stopped spinning so he didn’t accidentally hurt him, but he was definitely very happy. Y/n watched them and Moon noticed their expression wasn’t just one of happiness, but also awareness and anticipation. For a moment, his smile disappeared. Maybe they’re worried something will happen to him? No, Sun is kind. He’s energetic, but definitely gentle and won’t hurt him. Moon thought. He cleared his throat and Y/n looked at him for a moment, but returned their gaze to Sun and Oliver. Moon was going to say something, but was cut off.”Thank you for this, it really made his night.” Y/n said. M smiled.”It was a pleasure.” He said. He bent down with his arms open, to which Oliver immediately switched to him from Sun and hugged him. After the hug, Oliver grabbed Y/N’s hand and Y/n double checked their pocket to make sure they had their keys.”You’re leaving already? Well, take this with you!” Sun said as he and Moon stood up. He held out a small piece of paper and Moon looked a bit surprised at Sun. Y/n took the paper from his hand .”We have to get going now. Have a good night.” Moon said, grabbing Sun’s hand and walking away as Oliver waved bye at them.”You too.” Y/n said. Sun waved back at Oliver and Y/n smiled.
“That was the best!!” Oliver exclaimed as they started walking. Y/n smiled and handed back the plushies, letting out a yawn.”I’m glad you had so much fun, but now it’s time to go back.” They said. Oliver nodded in agreement and they continued walking as the followed the fence. There were a lot less cars, so it wasn’t hard to spot the one they rode on the way.”Yeah, I’m sleepy. Can we make a fort when we get back, though?” Oliver asked. Y/n smiled fondly at the idea and carefully put the paper Sun gave them into their pocket, switching it with their keys.”Of course. Feel like grabbing Sonic for dinner?” Y/n asked. Oliver gasped and nodded quickly, doing a little bounce.”Yes!” He said. They continued walking along the fence. It felt much longer compared to when they arrived.

First Real Con™ (-ish. Like, still pretty small, but) Experiences, in roughly chronological order
-Went to a fun cosmic horror 'panel' that was just Premee Mohamed bleary-eyed off the plane on a Friday afternoon. Had never really heard of her before but was good panel, ended up buying her book to get signed
-Went to a D&D worldbuilding panel that was just, like, Some Guys talking and a physically painful Q&A session
-Got a fishbowl cocktail with 3 shots in it and dinner at Boston Pizza with friends (The pasta was honestly more of a mistake than the liquor).
-Spent an hour waiting in line Saturday morning despite already having my lanyard
-Went to a panel where a professional Viking Nerd just kind of rambled and answered questions of wildly varying quality for an hour and a half, then bought a copy of his personal illustrated translation/retelling of the Edas because hey why not
-Spent like 2 hours wandering around the vendor hall and spending a truly eye watering amount of money on [dice, mouse pad with cool print on it, many many posters, t-shirts, necklace, etc]
-Watched a pair of circus performers put on a ring/aerial dance/acrobatics routine set to the soundtrack of Ocarina of Time, was left acutely aware of how little core strength I have (ran into them outside the Con after too, they were nice and have very pretty business cards)
-Watched the local SCA chapter put on 45 minutes of sparring bouts and medieval dances
-Forgot to buy separate ticket to 19+ red carpet cocktail thing so went to gin distillery three blocks form apartment with friends who didn't have tickets for evening
-Spent at least two hours wandering around gawking at cosplayers (pleasantly surprising number of Gideons and also one Harrow, a truly incredible Aloy, an adorable couple and their kid dressed up as the Forgers, etc)
-Attended panel about how to do horror in TTRPGS (read: D&D) by Some Guy (well, Girl) that was actually pretty interesting. Presenter said her background was in event management which made sense given the super well organized powerpoint and the clear discomfort with public speaking.
-Played a few incredibly niche boardgames I had never heard of (the licensed Portal boardgame: surprisingly not shit!)
-Did swing dancing demo and actually had a lot of fun/managed to not terminally embarrass myself
-aaand finished off attended an actual multi-person panel with Premee Mohamed and T. J. Klune talking about worldbuilding which was, like, 75% just watching two fun charismatic people riff off/take the shit out of each other and was 100% an absolute blast.

For Black History Month, here's a recording of jazz legend William Parker reading an excerpt from his 1995 self-published story/tone poem, Music and the Shadow People, with backing music produced by Andrew O'Connor. Transcription below the cut – the book is long out of print and copies are extremely rare, so paragraph/line breaks (and any mistakes!) are mine.

Chapter 3: Intuitive Tomorrow
One tent of a three-ring circus remains standing
All the horses have run away
The ringmasters were strangled by their own hands
The countryside smells of a battle
That has taken place long before
A brown, light-footed charger
Leads the weary soldiers
Into the maple forest
They wear dirty grey uniforms
Trudging along like sharks
They smell blood
Their faces are masked with red anger
Still other faces overflow with despair
The trees seem to get stronger
You can almost feel yourself
Going up to the top of one
To kiss God on the forehead
This is the setting outside
Inside
This is a living spirit world
The place where babies live
Before they are born
It is the place they return to
After life
The language spoken here
Is a cosmic sound language
A word is a sound
A sound is a vision
The centre of the universe is the periphery
Sometimes for a half a second
We see a blur that contains all the stories
If we look inside while producing
Sound vibrations
We see the horizon
There are thousands upon thousands of orchestras
in the tone world
There is an orchestra of raindrops
And one made of snowflakes
There is an orchestra made of all kinds of light
There are tunnels that lead to the colour world
And the trance world
With continuous sound
And continuous silence
Existing at the same time
There is an orchestra of dolphins and whales
There really are no names
No categories
It is about the one big shape
And the trillion little shapes
That make up the shapeless
timeless space
The naked eye cannot see
The melody or harmony that is present
It constantly speaks about
The intuitive tomorrow
There is a huge silver disc in the sky
It is a message from the father
of sound
It is about vibration
The sky is a burnt blue wall
A curtain of water erupts
To the left of the disc is a fire-red
Planet, a rope ladder
Dangles from the moon
Stars fill the galaxy
A bridge of shells holds
Three hundred prophets
Riding on goats
They dismount and walk towards the sun
Their footprints turn into clouds
Someone is knocking on the yellow birth-door
The doorman who is both male
And female opens the door
A bluish-purple flame
Spirals and laces
The embryo still in the womb
Now droplets of stone
Pour from the opening
At the top of the world
The story is in the strong music
The thunder-drummers produce
I am a wholewheat dumpling
Sauteed in blood
The angel says it is time to go
Blue-white flames line the birth passage
I see no colour
I feel nothing
Grains of sand turn into ants
Why do I leave my eternity
To be with you?
A bolt of lightning
Stretches across the vast darkness
The sun resounds
Like a huge gong
The wind whistles through the holes
In the sky
Trees are strung with sinew
The earth is a soundbox
Of six million birds
Singing six million tones
Simultaneously
Spirit tones float in lava
Ice castles melt
Forming huge lakes
The seeds of oceans
Water tones begin to sing
The thunder-drummers take
Two steps forward
And spin
The earth opens up
And swallows the sound
Tear tones slide down
The bamboo stick
Silver peacocks
Place their hands
On the unwashed altars
In the rice fields
Bell tones of sound
The house of the creator is the body
The altar is the heart
It is also the creator's drum
The rhythm is a lifeforce
The vibration of temples
The green mountain
The worm digging in soil
Children collapse in the bushes
They use leaves as pillows
The pillows turn into light
Then to eternal happiness
Then to stars
Oak and maple harps are plucked
The long breath is held
The tail of the dragon is caught
In the lid of the upper lip
Stone fingers flap
Like skin
Peeled
And placed over gourds
Branches tremble from the corner of the eye
Shadows sparkle
In the golden wetness of visual
touchable dream zones
Every lie that has been told
Since creation
Is written in huge letters
Over the black-purple horizon
The drone begins
Thick rosin dust
Over a field of dandelions
Singular tones bounce
Over low ocean waves
The same song
God is the master of masters
The composer of life
And all that elevates
The instrument is all creation
The creator
Is the improvisor and the player
The spirit that causes all things to dance
Human beings create
Only through the grace
Of the creator
Sound exists
As a force of nature
That leads us
Back to the creator
The intuitive tomorrow
Does not last
It is not about that
It is about the signs that inform
It is about the senses that do not touch
It is about unearthly realities
That science does not understand
Nor chooses to accept
It is about the death of death
And the life of life
The taking away of fear
It is about filling souls with compassion
To sweep one's entire being
With hope
And belief in truth
Leaving this vessel
When we meditate
On peace
Finding the lost children
Who seek passage
On this ship, the ark,
The psalm, the last sunset
One day
The sun will be late setting
This will be the sign
Please
Have all pains eased
All hurts soothed
Wrapped in love
In the peace
Of acceptance of salvation
Every sound must be filled
With truth and love for all
Creation, the intuitive tomorrow
May last a lifetime
What shall we do
when we cannot hear the silence?
The intuitive tomorrow will solve the mystery
It is today
It is yesterday
The intuitive tomorrow
Is another name for the music
It is the life
It is the dance
It is the prancing pony
Soon to be stallion
It is the doe we saw that morning
On the way to Vermont
It is the shirt off my back
Onto yours
It is the birthday party
The river
Mixing with the ocean
The intuitive tomorrow
Is the kind nurse
Who gave you that sip of water
After your operation
Within the intuitive tomorrow
The deaf hear
The crippled walk
The pain of famine vanishes
There is no war, guns or missiles
The sky is deeply concerned
And buckles and caves in
Due to the weight of these elements
It's as if the seat is the volcano
When its crust cools
It will be the new landscape
The playground for the little ones
The point tone
Split and stretched across time
The nail of the finger of the valley
Is one million times
The size of one million
Galaxies.

I’m Depressed Let’s Talk 25 Things You Probably Didn’t Miss and I’m Just an Asshole  About the It Chapter 2 Trailer Let’s Goooo
You know the drill by now and if you don’t you can look in the tags and laugh about how wrong I was anyway putting the rest under a cut
1. So this scene’s almost beat-for-beat straight from the book, with variations to make it more cinematic. The sign says Marsh when she rings the doorbell, and i’ll bet you anything like Its eyes changing from yellow to blue in the storm drain, they’ll keep the thing from the book where Mrs Kersh opens the door and when Bev looks again, it says Kersh instead
2. Kersh’s open chest wound/rotting flesh isn’t from the book, i assume it’s a reference to The Shining
3. The “it gets so hot you feel like you could just die” and “I had cookies in the oven” are both references to the witch from Hansel and Gretel, which is what Mrs Kersh really is. I mean she’s REALLY an interdimensional clown-spider from outer space but you get the idea. I don’t know if they’ll be as blatant as in the book, it looks like the house doesn’t turn to candy anyway which makes sense
4. The antique photo of the twin women may be another Shining reference
5. The picture on her wall of her and her “fadder” brings up some interesting possibilities, but my money’s on Andres Muschietti i believe stated at one point in an interview or AMA or tweet or something that in his universe, there was an ACTUAL Pennywise that It killed to take his form, and he was one of Its favorite victims and that’s what the old PENNYWISE travelling circus thing at the bottom of Its trophy heap is from, so it’s very possible this is a photo of the real dude and his actual daughter before his identity was usurped by The Sewer Clownspider From Outer Space
6. The bruises on Jessica Chastain’s arm seem to imply they’re keeping her abusive husband and her fistfight with him when she tries to leave for Derry intact
7. Oh yeah before I forget, Kersh’s “no one who here ever really dies” i know is a bit nonsensical but in the book, it explains that Derry was made “In Its image” and everyone who lives there is sort of influenced by It, almost part of It, and Its victims are forever “trapped in the Deadlights” so that’s probably what It meant is that even in death, in Derry there’s no escape from It. It will take your form, It will go after your loved ones, you will float in Its Deadlights, etc.
8. Oh yeah also her apartment has a bird motif and It appears as a bird several times over the book but more importantly to Bev, during the....ahem THAT scene, she sort of...dissociates? She starts daydreaming about power lines with hundreds of grackles all over them and she fends It off by saying the grackles know Its real name as an adult, so that’s probably i mean i doubt any of that will be referenced i think it’s just a fun little set design easter egg
9. The Losers looking in the window and seeing themselves as kids is probably at the end of the movie as Eddie isn’t there and it happens right at the end of the book, or something very similar i believe it’s actually Bev looks in a window and sees they still look like adults, but she sees adult Stan and Eddie’s reflections alongside their own which is very emotional and this looks to be a version of that
10. Yeah the town is...weirdly empty i’m not sure why i mean the town gets its shit wrecked at the end of the book since it was made in Its image, when It (allegedly) dies, the entire town is destroyed by a massive storm that doesn’t look to be the case here, but the town being completely devoid of life i’m assuming has a lot to do with Its influence
11. Yeah the Chinese Restaurant scene from both book and miniseries is intact, it remains to be seen whether they’ll get insane shit in their fortune cookies or not. If I had to guess, based on the way the first one went, something will probably be up with them but the ante will be upped and it won’t be as campy as the miniseries version
12. This scene of It taunting/luring Bill by pretending to be Georgie in the sewer is completely Muschietti’s own creation, It only appears as Georgie when they’re already underground in the book, looking monstrous and with his arm ripped off, so i have no idea where this is going. Oh, wait, hold on, when they all split up to okay so basically if you haven’t read the book they’ve all repressed most of their childhoods and don’t really remember shit until Mike calls, right? So after the Chinese Restaurant reunion, they all split up and go different directions to trigger memories and re-familiarize themselves with Derry. It’s at THAT point Bev meets Mrs Kersh, Richie meets the Paul Bunyan statue (more on that in a minute), etc. Bill though doesn’t have a run-in with It, he just finds his old bike Silver in a pawn shop. So Muschietti probably inserted this scene to be his encounter with It on his walking tour of Derry. Also bit of opinion here but can i just say it’s an AWESOME parallel a simple but very effective stroke of genius calling back to by far the most infamous scene of the book and both adaptations, that was brilliant on Muschietti’s part.
13. They’re pushing Bill/Beverly in this trailer which is a subplot i really hoped they would drop because Bill is fuCKING MARRIED and she ends up with Ben at the end anyway, so it’s pretty pointless padding and just a reason for the dude to have an affair, but alas, they appear to have kept it intact.
14. Yeah, so this is where they defeated It the last time, the tower of floating kids and victim trophies appears to be gone, which is probably what prompts them to go deeper (also more on that in a second). I assume they end up going down the place Pennywise retreated to last time to find Its real lair.
15. Okay yeah Pennywise floating off of a Paul Bunyan statue with a pyramid of balloons while Richie freaks out is also right out of the book, it’s his “Walking Tour” scare, when he was a kid the statue came alive and attacked him, and as an adult, it actually turns into a giant Pennywise statue and fucks with him. I’m not sure if the statue is actually going to come to life because that is a bit hard to translate to film or if they’ll take the easy way out and just have Pennywise on the statue, it remains to be seen. Although, the inverted triangle of balloons and fucking off while laughing is what It did to Eddie in Chapter 1 after chasing him as a Leper, so that could be an indication that It’s just gotten finished pretending to be the statue and fucking with Richie.
15. Mike’s digging for something? I have no idea why other than Mike in the book is the narrator, local It expert, and sort of amateur detective trying to find out what crimes are It related, so he could be trying to dig up a body of a missing kid or something, i do not know
16. The balloons under the bridge are straight out of the murder of Adrian Mellon, which i believe Muschietti said is going to be the opening of this film. It’s definitely the inciting event for It to wake up. Basically these assholes harass this gay couple at a fair, which you see a couple flashes later in the trailer, follow them, see them on this bridge and beat the shit out of the one guy who talks back to them and then throw him over the bridge. This hatred and brutality wakes It up, and both Adrian’s boyfriend and the youngest of his attackers see It under the bridge biting his ribs “like he was trying to eat his heart.” The boyfriend, Don Hagarty, then sees It disappear with Mellon, who is just barely but STILL ALIVE at this point, into a giant cascade of balloons under the bridge
17. Yeah judging by how fucked up this house is, i think where Pennywise is attacking Mike is his early childhood house where his parents burned. Also not in the book, also i assume a scare put in during his walking tour of Derry because he’s the other character that doesn’t get one.
18. Now this is a really interesting shot and one i’ve heard several theories about. It could be the original, human Pennywise losing his shit, it could be It transforming, it doesn’t really resemble anything from the book so it’s hard to tell. One theory i’ve heard that i really do like though, it holds no more merit than any of the others, but i personally like it the best, is that this is actually Henry Bowers we’re seeing. Because he did survive, he got the murders for the original cycle pinned on him in the book and was sent to a brutally run mental hospital, and It breaks him out to have him try to kill The Losers. This could be him, mid-mental breakdown, applying make-up to look like Pennywise. Homeboy’s face is too jacked to really tell who it is, and the background’s not helping much so it is a mystery, but it does look like a human, it doesn’t have the proportions of Pennywise’s face, and i do like the idea that it’s Henry. But yeah also very likely it’s the original human Pennywise meeting some gruesome, horrible fate. There wasn’t a human Pennywise in the book, by the way. I mean It liked to talk about how Its name was Bob Gray and It was a human, but It’s just lying. This is 100% Muschietti’s contribution to the lore.
19. Now THIS place, where the flashlights are almost shining green with the black alien-looking stalagmites, i mean this has gotta be Its real, final lair. Not quite the same as the book, but giving off a very similar vibe, keeping the cosmic origin intact, which Muschietti did say he was going to do so. Oh yeah, i forgot to mention before when there was a shot of him in the sewer, but in the book and miniseries, Mike is actually badly wounded by Henry and has to sit out the final fight with It, but that doesn’t look to be the case here, he seems on the scene, which is really nice after his side-lining in the first movie.
20. Yeah the fair i was talking about that’s where Adrian Mellon and Don Hagarty are first harassed by the homophobes who later run into them again and murder Adrian
21. Eddie has a bandage on his face it looks like in the final fight scene, probably giving to him by Henry. So Henry like i said It winds him up and sets him loose on The Losers, but he only succeeds in badly wounding Mike, who badly wounds him back, and he’s actually killed in a fight with Eddie. I assume the bandage is a result of that fight
22. Oh yeah just small side-note, it looks like the fair where Mellon and Hagarty were first accosted by the homophobes is still up and running and Bill visits it for some reason, which isn’t in the book, i don’t know what that’s about, but it’s probably a new lil story beat for him. Exciting!
23. Bev drowning in a pool of blood isn’t in the book at all, so i have no idea what they’re doing. Jessica Chastain though did mention in an interview though that one scene used a frankly ludicrous amount of fake blood, possibly the most ever although Evil Dead is giving it stiff competition, and i don’t think it’s much of a gamble to say this is probably the scene in question. What makes that interesting is she also had an instagram post about washing all the fake blood off and out of her hair, whereas this is clearly Sophia Lillis drowning in the blood. So it seems like there’s gonna be some time fuckery where it cuts back and forth between both child and adult Bev experiencing some kind of trauma which is really cool, the book did that a lot, blurring the line between the kids and their adult selves, and i’d love to see that in this movie. Oh yeah also almost goes without saying but i assume it’s some sort of continuation/ante-upping of the blood-out-of-the-sink bit
24. It looks like they all participate in the Ritual of Chud, rather than just Bill and Richie like in the book, which....which actually i like and makes a lot of sense, because frankly you don’t notice when you’re reading it but afterwards you’re kinda like “wait were they all just kinda standing around doing nothing while Bill and Richie had all the fun?” So yeah, good decision. Also yeah clearly alien architecture
25. The girl under the bleachers i assume is just one of the murders that prompts Mike to call the others back to Derry, if not THE murder, it doesn’t have an exact parallel in the book that plays out like this. But what’s interesting is the little light It uses to lure her in closer, when he claps it out and then lets it shine again, it’s clearly spooky orange which is THE DEADLIGHTS color so it almost seems like It’s luring a kid over to It with one of The Deadlights in disguise which is....very interesting, not a thing that happened in the book, in the book it was much more “the second you see orange light your brain melts out of your ears, eyes and nose” so it’s pretty cool. Also Its apparently friendly smile and “Hello!” are a lot like when It took Georgie and i really appreciate that
SO THAT WAS 25 THINGS ONLY A FUCKING IDIOT WOULD MISS IN THE NEW IT TRAILER WHAT DID YOU THINK DID YOU CATCH ANYTHING I MISSED REMEMBER TO COMMENT LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE AND RING THE BELL FOR NOTIFICATIONS

For the week of 18 February 2019
Quick Bits:
Aquaman #45 gives us a new creation story with Father Sea and Mother Salt. It’s interesting world-building for what’s going on on this island. Robson Rocha, Daniel Henriques, and Sunny Gho seem to level up on their art again. This book is gorgeous.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Avengers #15 continues the vampire civil war, with the Shadow Colonel basically kidnapping Ghost Rider. Jason Aaron is definitely taking this series in weird places, but it remains highly entertaining. Especially with collaborators like David Marquez and Erick Arciniega who deliver some incredible artwork.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Avengers: No Road Home #2 reveals how Nyx and her family took Olympus. There’s also a neat parallel narration for Hawkeye explaining how the guy with just a bow and arrows can take on gods and monsters. The art from Paco Medina, Juan Vlasco, and Jesus Aburtov is gorgeous, they really seem to pushing themselves with their storytelling. It’s just a shame that none of the artists are credited on the cover.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Barbarella/Dejah Thoris #2 is ridiculously impressive. Leah Williams, Germán García, Addison Duke, and Crank! are delivering an intelligent, humorous, and compelling adventure tale here that reminds me a lot of some of what Alan Moore and Chris Sprouse did in Tom Strong. It’s incredibly inventive and the artwork is amazing. Highly recommended.

Tumblr media
Batman #65 gives us the penultimate chapter of “The Price”, featuring an all out battle between Flash, Gotham Girl, and Gotham. The artwork from Guillem March and Tomeu Morey is stunning, with some incredible layouts as the action continues.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Black Widow #2 is fairly bloody and violent as Natasha racks up a body count tracking down the people running “No Restraints Play”, a site that specializes in depravity. Flaviano’s line art seems scratchier than the first issue, but it works for the violent tone of story.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Bloodborne #9 begins the third arc, “A Song of Crows”, as Aleš Kot, Piotr Kowalski, Brad Simpson, Aditya Bidikar, and Jim Campbell spotlight Eileen the Crow. This is a bit of return to the kind of abstract storytelling and embrace of oblique existentialism of the first arc as Eileen investigates the ritual murder of a hunter, but is confounded by time and holes in the narrative.
| Published by Titan
Tumblr media
Catwoman #8 is ostensibly the “conclusion” to “Something Smells Fishy”, but it doesn’t actually end the story in any way and leaves the reader at a cliffhanger of continuing elements. That being said, it’s still an entertaining issue from Joëlle Jones, Elena Casagrande, Fernando Blanco, John Kalisz, and Josh Reed. Wonderful action sequences, and more questions as to the nature of a reliquary that seems to contain resurrective powers.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Delver #1 begins a new Comixology Original series from MK Reed, C. Spike Trotman, Clive Hawken, Maarta Laiho, and Ed Dukeshire. It’s a very intriguing and unique take on the fantasy gaming theme of a dungeon full of treasure and monsters with delvers working to plumb the depths. But it’s from the perspective of the townsfolk whose land the door to the dungeon appears in and how it changes and impacts their lives.
| Published by Iron Circus Comics
Tumblr media
Doctor Strange #11 concludes the battle with Dormammu and the Faltine, for now at least, from Mark Waid, Jesús Saiz, Javier Pina, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Cory Petit. Some very nice art as usual from Saiz, Pina, and Rosenberg.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #3 continues “Mother of Exiles” from Tom Taylor, Juann Cabal, Nolan Woodard, and Travis Lanham as Peter finds out a bit about the rumours regarding his neighbour and Under York, another duplicate New York City under New York City, that oddly isn’t the Monster Metropolis. Great humour from Taylor in the dialogue.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Guardians of the Galaxy #2 takes a somewhat different approach as Peter Quill drunk dials Kitty as he tries to make sense of what’s going on with Thanos, Gamora, everyone who’s dead, and the current state of the Guardians. Donny Cates, Geoff Shaw, Marte Gracia, and Cory Petit are really taking this series into interesting offbeat territory, while still delivering some excellent humour and an ominous feel to Starfox’s new band of “guardians”.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Incursion #1 begins a new mini picking up on where the Eternal Warrior and Geomancer are since Harbinger Wars 2 and Ninja-K, and pit them against Imperatrix Virago, a cosmic villain that is devouring worlds (kind of like if Galactus were pestilence), from Andy Diggle, Alex Paknadel, Doug Braithwaite, José Villarrubia, Diego Rodriguez, and Marshall Dillon. The art is incredible, the stakes seem pretty high, and the outlook after this first issue look pretty grim for Earth.
| Published by Valiant
Tumblr media
James Bond 007 #4 sees Stephen Mooney join Greg Pak, Tríona Farrell, and Ariana Maher for the art chores for three issues, continuing the tale of Bond and “Oddjob”’s team-up. Like Marc Laming, Mooney seems to be born to draw Bond and espionage themed stories.
| Published by Dynamite
Tumblr media
Judge Dredd: Toxic #4 concludes what has been an excellent series dealing with xenophobia and hateful rhetoric from Paul Jenkins, Marco Castiello, Vincenzo Acunzo, Jason Millet, Shawn Lee, and Robbie Robbins. I’ve always found non 2000 AD Judge Dredd stories to be a bit of crapshoot, but IDW have been delivering well with the past two mini-series, this and Under Siege.
| Published by IDW
Tumblr media
Justice League #18 is the latest excursion into the Legion of Doom territory from James Tynion IV, Pasqual Ferry, Hi-Fi, and Tom Napolitano. It works with some of the revelations from last issue regarding Martian Manhunter and builds a new narrative for Lionel Luthor’s past and his work with Vandal Savage. It’s interesting to see Tynion working with variations on discarded continuities in this way, building a new past that synthesizes pre-Flashpoint ideas with the current batch of backstories.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Middlewest #4 only seems to be getting better and better as more of this world and how it seems to work get fleshed out by Skottie Young, Jorge Corona, Jean-Francois Beaulieu, and Nate Piekos. There’s something incredibly magical and special about this series that taps into the feeling of some of the best coming-of-age fantasies as it blends Ray Bradbury, JM Barrie, and Carlo Collodi into this magical realist adventure.
| Published by Image
Tumblr media
Miles Morales: Spider-Man #3 concludes the opening arc from Saladin Ahmed, Javier Garrón, David Curiel, and Cory Petit by adding Captain America to Miles & Rhino’s team-up. This has been a very entertaining start to the series, with a nice mix of Miles’ personal life and superheroics.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Naomi #2 reasserts that Jamal Campbell is a powerhouse of an artist and one of the best kept secrets of the past few years who really should have a higher profile. His art is amazing. It also helps that the story he, Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker, and Carlos M. Mangual are telling is as compelling as this, as Naomi confronts Dee as she tries to learn about the day of her adoption. It’s very widescreen and epic as it hints at the broader DC Universe, but at the same time this is very deeply personal.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Old Man Quill #2 gives the Guardians a taste of the depravity and despair that Earth has fallen to in this post-superhero world. Ethan Sacks shows there’s still a bit of humour left, though, in that Piledriver’s descendent thinks that Piledriver was one of the all-time greats. Also the art from Robert Gill and Andres Mossa gives a wonderful amount of detail to the wastelands.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Relay #4 returns after a delay with new artist Dalibor Talajić (I believe Andy Clarke had to bow out due to illness, but I’m not 100% sure on that). Talajić’s art style is not as bright and clean as Clarke’s, giving a darker, shadowy approach that results in the bleak, horror elements of the story coming further into focus.
| Published by AfterShock
Tumblr media
Seven to Eternity #13 returns from its own lengthy delay to conclude the arc in Skod, with the revelation of part of Adam’s choice to save the Mud King. It reiterates the theme since the beginning that there seem to be no good choices in this world, that everything tainted, despite Adam’s father believing the world black and white. While we are going into another trade break, Rick Remender, Jerome Opeña, Matt Hollingsworth, and Rus Wooton consistently make this worth the wait.

Tumblr media
Sharkey: The Bounty Hunter #1 is the latest of Mark Millar’s Netflix feeder series, after The Magic Order and Prodigy, with Simone Bianchi and Peter Doherty rounding out the team. This one feels a bit like if Warren Ellis were writing Strontium Dog, and it works. The artwork from Bianchi is worth it on its own. Gorgeous character designs.
| Published by Image
Tumblr media
Venom #11 is another holy crap issue from Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman, Joshua Cassara, JP Mayer, Frank Martin, and Clayton Cowles. There are some really big revelations about Eddie and his family that really need to be read firsthand. Amazing work.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
X-O Manowar #24 reminds us again just how good of an artist and storyteller Tomás Giorello is. The action sequences and battle between Aric and Hesnid is incredible, with fairly inventive layouts that just elevate the overall impact of the pages. Giorello and Diego Rodriguez really make this something joyous to behold.

Fanfiction:

Will Sam and Dean be able to keep their secrets? Or will secrets between the brothers break them apart? Gundam Wing/Supernatural Crossover, Dean/Trowa, WuFei/Heero
@rhysgalentalcernunnos, @anaranesindanarie The Maxwell Twins: Shi and Duo http://archiveofourown.org/works/11026149/chapters/25138110 They didn’t know anything about their parents or if they were even related, but they couldn’t deny the fact that they looked alike. Or the fact that they only had each other.
@rhysgalentalcernunnos, @anaranesindanarie The Shirtless Plan http://archiveofourown.org/works/11221695/chapters/25108284 The Maxwell Twins, Shi and Duo, plan to get Wufei and Triton shirtless. What happens? Do they succeed? NSFW, 2x5x2, twincest, twins in a threesome

Welcome to Winnermart (Ch. 10) http://archiveofourown.org/works/6571054/chapters/15035113 Author: Hikaru Yuy (SailorVFan10) Heero Yuy used to be a Preventers, but thanks to a mission that went terribly wrong, coupled with the wars that continue to haunt him despite them being over and done with for nine years, he has a lot of guilt that ended up ruining his relationships one after the other, not to mention ruining his life to the point where the only job he can hold down is retail. Duo Maxwell was discharged from Preventers after a mission nearly killed his partner, who he ended up leaving at their apartment after a fight because he believes it’s for his own good–he’s cursed and everyone he’s ever loved has died. Dishonourable discharge looks terrible on a résumé, so the only jobs that’ll take him are retail ones, which he’s technically overqualified for. And Quatre Winner, CEO of WEI, is sent down to Winnermart #6969 to try to see if it’s even worth salvaging, knowing if he can’t save it, 300 people will be out of a job, and it will be his fault. It is this event that brings three seemingly three different paths together. …all the relationships…

A Safe Good Place (Ch. 8-10) http://archiveofourown.org/works/11039199/chapters/25029045 Author: The Manwell The moment when Trowa realized that the best thing in his life had finally crossed paths with the worst thing in his life, he was surprisingly relieved because, really, what it all came down to was the simple hope for a safe, good place. It would take a risk, the biggest risk he’d ever imagined, but he’d do it. He’d make it happen. At this point, there was no turning back. WARNINGS: mild language, reference to kind-of-explicit male/male sexy times. Duo/Trowa 2X3
May Demons Rest: Shinigami Sleeps 2017 (Ch. 7) http://archiveofourown.org/works/10944786/chapters/25234395 Author: The Manwell A re-write of my 2004 fanfic “Shinigami Sleeps” To find and free Duo from his demons, Trowa leaves his uneventful life at the circus for the mean streets of an obscure colony in L2. 2X3 WARNINGS: Gang violence, reference to human trafficking, language (Basically, un-heroic acts and the uglier side of the colony starts to emerge.)
End of Line (Ch. 10) http://archiveofourown.org/works/10833834/chapters/25214868 Authors: @Morbidbirdy, @the-notorious-bhg The Grid, the legendary Tron System, has always intrigued Duo Maxwell. After years of dreaming and months of tireless work, he finally receives the final part he needs to unlock the door to the digital frontier. A blast of a digitizing laser later he finds himself in the world of his dreams. However, soon that dream becomes a nightmare as he comes to realize that his existence in this new world is both a danger to him and to the programs who reside there. With the help of Security Program Trowa and a mysteriously damaged and glitchy program named Heero, he embarks on a journey through The Grid to seek help from a mysterious entity known as the Gatekeeper. Will he be able to get out of the Tron System, or will the organizations who are hunting him manage to derez him first? 1X3 Gundam Wing/Tron Crossover (( This one is on my must read list…. You gotta read it! -Shi ))

In His Eyes (Chapter 3)
So. Here you go.
Genre: Slow build/eventual romance Word count: 1416 Pairing: Nightcrawler/Angel Rating: T+
Read it here!
After his talk with Kurt that night, Warren can’t help but feel different. Not in any big, profound way, but enough for it to catch him off guard. When he goes back up to his room, the stuffiness that he has always been indifferent to hits him anew, and for the first time he can recall, he feels the need to open the window.
The night air is not at all unpleasant on his skin and in his lungs, and for a long while he stands, staring out at the moonlit fields and wondering why he can’t stop thinking about Kurt’s story. The words “demon,” and “hunted,” roll around in his head, teasing him with more details of a life story he does not know. He wants to hear more about Kurt’s time in the circus. He wants to give Kurt his own story, wants him to know exactly how he become this screwed up. He wants to tell Kurt the exact words his father had used the day he had told him that he would not have a mutant for a son. Shaking the thought from his head, he forces himself to pull back the covers on his bed. There must be something in that smoke the blue boy made whenever he teleported, because these thoughts were not his own. They couldn’t be. Warren Worthington III did not talk about his feelings. None of the Worthingtons did. Not his mother when she’d found out about his father’s mistress. Not his uncle when his grandfather had excluded him from his Will. Not Warren or Warren’s cousin when, on advice from his father about taking charge and being more assertive, Warren had pressured his cousin into joining him to steal one of his father’s cars for a joyride, and upon driving it off the path and into the pond in the middle of the estate, had stood by and let his cousin take the full brunt of the blame and the punishment. A knot had tied itself in his stomach that day, one that held him firmly in place and yanked his tongue back into his mouth every time he tried to speak up and save his cousin. It was the same knot that had only grown bigger with time and with each attempt Warren made to fight it, which was why he no longer tried. But with Kurt, he had somehow managed to find a loop in the knot; one Kurt had painstakingly pulled him through. And while it was refreshing, the further he got from the moment and the more its effects faded, the less comfortable he felt. By the time he slipped into bed, lying on his stomach and winding his arms around the pillow below him, he fought a loosing battle to keep the memory positive in his mind, to prevent the knot from tightening again.
Four weeks passed. Warren kept himself closely guarded, though as usual, this was ignored. As well as being pestered into attending a few classes (which he did, sometimes, but never paid much attention to), he even ventured out of the mansion once or twice with the others, completely without the trench coat he had gotten so used to having to wear when he had been living with his father. It had felt strange, like he was naked, but once he had walked into the mall, at first hiding himself in the centre of the group of students and gradually venturing out into the open, he found the feeling of being out in the open to be utterly intoxicating. Sure, they got stares, but the looks were more akin to wonder than to the scorn and disgust Warren had come to expect. With the relief, however, came an overwhelming surge of deep-seated anger: if he had only known that it would be this easy, he would have run from his father years sooner. In addition to replacing his routine of drinking and moping with drinking, moping and occasionally going out, he had found his wings becoming gradually less and less stiff. Soon, he was even able to extend them fully, feathers twitching with joy as he revelled in the feeling of blood pumping along the bones and into veins that hadn’t felt life in months.
All of that has led to this day, the day that Warren has been dreaming of for months. With the approval of Hank and of the professor, today is the day that Warren will try flying once again. He knows it is coming – this morning he wakes up with a bubbling in the pit of his stomach he hasn’t felt since he was a child on Christmas Eve. Feeling strangely jittery, he rises, dresses, and eats with the others, though he struggles to keep the food in his heaving stomach. The other are excited, too: they have been watching Warren’s long, painful recovery since the day he arrived at the school. And hard as he tries not to let it show, they still notice the way his eyes linger longingly whenever one of them uses their powers. After breakfast, there is no question about whether they should go to class first; even Hank is out the door before some students have even come down to breakfast, eager to see how his treatment regime has worked for the boy. The sun is bright that day, and Warren welcomes the warmth on his skin, drinking it in and wondering when was the last time he had felt this vividly alive. The group crowds around him, eagerly jostling him and slapping his back, for once not worried that they will be shoved back. “Ready?” Ororo asks of him, raising her eyebrows in anticipation. “What do you think?” Warren answers, and he surprises even himself with how different his voice sounds when he is not being dry or sardonic, or speaking in any way about the past year of his life. His eyes slide across the faces around him, sticking involuntarily on Kurt, whose grin is, as it often is, the widest of the lot. When Warren spreads his wings, the crowd dissipates immediately, spreading to give him the room he needs. Already, there are small cheers as they finally see the Angel in his full glory. Kurt, however, does not say anything, cannot say anything. The sight of Warren before him, pure white plumage almost glowing in the sunlight, steals the breath from his lungs, forces the smile on his face to pale in wonder.
Warren’s feathers quiver, each muscle begging him to just go already. But as precious moments pass, he hesitates, and at first he is unsure why. But as he looks around at the people all rallying around him, feels the sun on his wings, feels life in his chest, he realises that it is because this is a moment that, unlike so many in the past year, he will not soon want to forget. With an inward, indulgent smile, and only a twinge of nervousness, Warren’s wings twitch, and before he or any of his spectators know what has happened, he is in the clouds. He hears from below him the distant sound of an almighty cheer, though it is drowned out by wind whipping in his ears. Warren’s wings ache, unused to having to carry him like they used to, but the sensation is welcome, and Warren lets out a breathless laugh, heart surging in his chest. He feels as though a piece of him has just clicked into place after months of trying to force it into a space it didn’t fit. He beats his wings, lifting himself higher, to where he can see for miles in every direction and the people below look like brushstrokes in an impressionist painting, like the ones that hung in the galleries his parents had so often dragged him to as a child. The grass and trees and even the distant town are a tapestry below him, and he is not part of it: he is just an observer. He is the sole beholder to this vast work of art. He twists, tucking his wings in against him, and in response his body cuts through the air with ease, spinning him like a dancer before his wings extend once more and take him in another upward arc. A familiar thought comes to his mind, the same thought he had had the first time he had taken to the skies: this really was the way he was meant to move. For what feels like a lifetime, Warren's mind is focused on nothing but the sensation of flying, of slicing through the air with all the grace and ease he remembers from before all of this, when he was just a rich man’s son who snuck out at night to fly in the moonlight. When finally he touches down, flustered and dizzy with the ability he’d gained back, his reception is glowing. All Warren registers is smiles and shouting; the words, in his state, are beyond his comprehension. There is pure electricity flowing through his veins, and if some cosmic force had for some reason decided that this moment was to be his last, he is not even sure he would mind.
By the time the afternoon comes, the excitement has died down, though a few people remain outside after attending the rest of the day’s classes, and Warren remains in the air as he has been almost all day. Scott emerges into the open air of the garden, having spent a while inside flicking through TV channels and finding nothing of interest. He looks up to see Warren’s silhouette stark against the sky. And when his eyes drift to the ground again, he spots a shape in the grass, a differing shade of red in his tinted vision. Frowning a little, he walks over and lies down in the grass opposite Kurt, his head next to –but not too close to– Kurt’s. Above them, Warren turns lazy circles in the air, falling and rising in something that almost resembled a choreographed routine. “What’s up?” he asks simply. “Not much,” is Kurt’s reply. His eyes follow the outline above him. “What are you thinking about?” “Warren,” he admits, and Scott nods. “You guys are pretty weird around each other,” he says. “It's like you can't decide whether you want to avoid each other or watch each other's every move. Is there something going on between you two?” Kurt just shrugs, though he knows that Scott can’t see it from where he is lying. “It is complicated,” he sighs. “How so?” Scott sits up, leaning back on one hand and pulling one knee up. It is only then that he sees the expression on Kurt’s face as he watches the angel; the way his eyes follow Warren’s twists and turns, closely, carefully, with a softness in his gaze that Scott has to wonder if he is imagining.
“Do you think about Warren a lot?” He asks finally, on a whim. He and the others all know there is history between the two, and all of them pick up on the tension between them, even now that Warren’s initial hostility has died down. Instantly, Kurt sits up at the question, knees bent and pulled almost to his chest. “Huh? What do you mean?” Kurt is defensive in his response, and Scott’s brow furrows, puzzled. “You guys seem weird around each other. Nobody can figure out if you’re still enemies or what.” He watches with careful eyes under his glasses as Kurt looks down, fidgeting with his three-fingered hands, his tail flicking behind him, agitated. “It is… complicated,” he answers again, though he doesn’t seem satisfied with the words. His eyes sneak another glance upwards, and Scott feels pressed to continue, sensing there is something bigger to be found somewhere under Kurt’s discomfort. “I wanna ask you some questions,” he says decidedly, in a tone that Kurt can’t find a way to disagree with. “And you gotta be totally honest.” Kurt swallows deeply, and very nearly gives in to the temptation of teleporting away, but eventually gives a hesitant nod. “What do you think of Warren?” The thought of answering the question makes Kurt squirm, but part of him thinks that maybe this could be good for him: he’d been suppressing so much confusion lately that it might be refreshing to speak to someone about it and have it sorted out as clearly and as concisely as Scott’s demeanour seemed to promise. “I think he has a lot of problems,” he begins. “But I think he can be helped. It isn’t easy to get through to him, but when you do, there is a good person inside. A vulnerable person.” Head bobbing slowly, Scott tries to categorise Kurt’s answer, even to work out where Kurt is getting all this sappy crap about the boy who once threatened to punch Scott in the face because he had asked whether he wanted to come out of his room for dinner. “And when you look at Warren, how do you feel?” This one is much harder to answer, so much so that Kurt lies down, averting his eyes from Scott and trying to pretend that he is just talking to himself. Even so, it takes him a long while to think of his answer. “I feel bad for him. I want to help him with the things he’s going through.” That isn’t all. Far from it. Kurt knows it, and he senses that Scott knows it, too. “I suppose when I’m talking to him, I just want him to feel happy. When he smiles because of something I say to him, I am happy for the rest of the day. You know? And when he is sad, it’s like there’s something inside me squeezing my stomach and I just want to make everything better for him right away.” Silence hangs between the two, and Scott is left with a lot of piecing together to do. The feelings he gets from Kurt’s somewhat rambling answer remind him in an eerie way of how he feels being around Jean, and the more he thinks about it, the more he fits Kurt’s answer with the morsels of evidence he has already gathered, and the more he becomes certain of his suspicion.
“Kurt, do you think there’s a chance that what you feel for Warren isn’t just friendship?” He can tell he has struck ground from the way that Kurt’s whole body goes stiff, as though he has been paralysed by fear. Seconds tick past, and gradually, the boy lifts himself up to face Scott, his face hot and his eyes panicked. “Wh-what do you mean?” he stammers. He has heard the words that get tossed around, the insults on TV and in the hallways, and he knows what they mean, and all confusion about his own feelings aside, he is suddenly struck with horror at the thought of Scott using those words, using that same tone with him. “Hey, it’s okay, buddy. It’s fine,” Scott assures him, holding up his hands. “If you like him like that, it’s no big deal.” “R-really? You mean it?” “Dude, we’ve got kids here who can change the weather, run at the speed of sound, and throw people across the room with their mind. You think anybody’s really gonna be weirded out by a guy liking another guy?” He dismisses the thought with a screwed up face and a wave of his hand, and suddenly, Kurt is all right again. Better than all right, even, because now he knows that having his new, disorganised, convoluted feelings out in the open isn’t nearly as scary as he pictured it. He gives a wide, relieved smile as he stands, and Scott can’t help but to smile back as Kurt offers him a hand and helps him up. “Thank you,” Kurt laughs as the two begin across the grass towards the door to the mansion. “This feels good.” “Any time, man.”
The pair reach the door just as Warren touches back down, taking a deep breath of the cooling afternoon air and shaking out his wings before tucking them neatly against his back. They will be sore tomorrow from the strain he has put them through, but he doesn’t care: the dull, throbbing ache will be a welcome change from the sharp, stabbing pain he has been dealing with for so long.

Souichi Presents: What Horrors Lurk... in the Iron Circus
Kyahaha! Hello hello hello, once again it is time for.. SOUICHI PRESENTS! Where we’ll one day have reviewed every single Junji Itou comic ever made, after which we’ll... presumably switch over to a episode by episode review of every scooby doo episode ever made. It’s a work in progress concept.
BUT that day won’t happen anytime soon, because the thing is? People just keep on making amazing horror work. I genuinely beleive that there may not have even been such an amazing time for horror. Ive mentioned it before, but the internet, independently created scene is a godsend for this genre.
From keeping up with new and emerging short video format horror through the great Night Mind channel, to following horror illustrators and comic creators I love. And the comics. Oh, the comics! That’s what we’re here to talk about today. There’s so many good horror comics out there; and today I’d like to talk about an anthology I’ve been meaning to review for a long, long time now...
Tumblr media
SOUICHI PRESENTS: THE SLEEP OF REASON (Part One)
(Cover art by Michael Deforge)
The Sleep of Reason is a FANTASTIC horror comic anthology, with 26 chilling, creepy, and strange stories. Produced by Iron Circus Comics, who as far as I’m concerned, is one of the companies to keep an eye on for independent publishing, which was single handedly built from the floor up by the amazing C. Spike Trotman. Iron Circus Comics has put out such great works as Poorcraft, Smut Peddler, Shadoweyes Vol 1, and more!
I was excited to get my hands on this, and it completely delivered. So why haven’t I reviewed it yet? Well... because, honestly? Some is just scheduling, memory, already having this or that on the docket. But also... Some of these stories are too scary for me. I had to take breaks reading it! I had to wait a while. See, part of why I run this blog is I’d already read the complete works of Junji Ito- over and over and over again, enough to work the sting out of them.
This? This has a sting and a half. And there’s enough stories here, and enough to say about them, that being as exhaustive as I am for normal stories would be... a literal half a years worth of regular updates. So I’m going to be talking about my favorites, in order.
As for stories left out? Some are just fine, but didn’t catch my eye. Maybe one or two I hate. But some? Honestly? Are too upsetting for me. Not the fun upsetting. That doesn’t make them bad horror. I even love some of them- they could even wind up being your favorites. But your dear host has even his limits, if you can forgive me. <3
Let’s get started with....
The Child Eater, by Meg Gandy
Tumblr media
Content Warnings for: Spousal abuse, (not seen but for sure) rape, child abuse, body horror, death.
Any kid who grew up in rough times of any level can tell you, imagination is a powerful way to escape. This short isn’t about imagination. But it’s about the reason why a little kid might need one: kids can be all, all, all too aware of exactly what horrors are going on around them.
Tumblr media
And the horror here is, for the most part, going on AROUND little Ruthie here; the real life horror. Whatever else might be going on.... well there’s monsters, and there’s monsters. And I won’t lie guys; it’s a rouge bite.
Horror is a way to talk about vulnerability. It can be a way to talk about things that scare us without talking about them directly. Well. This isn’t a comforting veneer of abstraction and fantasy kind of story. And it’s about the most vulnerable kind of hero you could possibly imagine. And it does it with art that uses a deft hand on details and emotional weight- we ARE in Ruthies shoes, we’re walking with her.
And I won’t tell you where she decides to go; only that it’s one of the most grimly satisfied endings i’ve run across.
The Waiting Game, a Nightmare by Carla Speed McNeil
Tumblr media
Content warnings for: Starvation, suicide, body horror, non consensual voyeurism.
Somehow, this story seems so much longer then it actually is, when you’re reading it. And that could not possibly be more apt for the story that it is; the slow, second by second agony of the story’s unnamed, ungendered subject. Our subject, who’s life is such agony that they can only wait, desperately, for an end. But we don’t need to be told that.
In fact, we aren’t told much at all. But the beauty of this story- and there are many- is that we’re left to let the horror unfold in our own minds eye. The crowds of the rich, eager, leaning over each others shoulders, anticipatory.
Hungry.
Tumblr media
What kind of entertainment do people want, if they can have anything. Anything in the whole world?
And how badly do we suffer for it.
Found Object, by Britt C. H.
Tumblr media
Content warnings for: death, gore.
Well first of all I’ll ask you to stay out of my three AM discord conversations. If theres a comic in here with a conversation about Donald Ducks emotional depth, I’m... well actually that’d be AMAZING. But I digress!
This is the kind of story I could use as a thesis support; a genuine fear touched on through a strange event. It lays it’s self out flat and clean; in both structure and subject, I consider this an amazingly classic horror piece, to my sensibilities.
Tumblr media
Something I’m fond of about horror is that it has a unique quality: It can only obfuscate how it’s plot is going to go but so far. Specifically I mean: It’s horror, so you know something terrible is going to happen. The story begins; something is introduced. We, the audience, become immediately aware this ‘thing’ is going to be something horrifying.
What matters isn’t the what. it’s the how. And this has a magnificent how.
The Grackle Bride, by Randal Milholland
Tumblr media
Content Warnings for: Death. Birds.
If like me, you happen to have been following Mr. Milholland’s work since... oh, say... middle school, you wouldn’t be too surprised to see his work here. Every year readers of his comic have enjoyed “The Last Trick-or-Treaters”, a beautiful watercolor series about... well. Children! Having... adventures.... that might end... lets say badly! For those children.
But that’s a horse of a different color. For this collection, we’re treated to a beautifully folkloric yarn- just the kind of mysterious, slightly gruesome story I would have devoured as a child myself. It feels authentic; you have your poor farmer, and his only daughter. A beautiful girl... only all she seems to care about are those grackles.
Tumblr media
It’s a thrill of a yarn at that. Cosy, even! Might depend a bit on how you feel about birds....
Proliferation, by Lin Visel and J.R. Cullen
Tumblr media
Content warnings for: Death.
Interesting to think about is- how little information can you use to make sure your audience knows what you mean? This story I think, hits very close to that edge; if you walked into this story completely missing a key piece of outside information, I still think you would get the idea through the context clues, especially combined with the title.
That’s impressive; but even more impressive to me is this is one of those horror stories I get a sense of temperature- atmosphere. The wet, sweltering heat of your own breath passing through you. The horrible chill of air meeting sweating, clammy skin. The horrible stillness of a forest.
Tumblr media
I do love short horror; and I’m always pleased to let the story sit as it is; a fragmenting little prism of moments. But this one I think I’d love to see more of; more of what’s happening. Maybe that would ruin it; but I know that it means a story has an inviting texture. As inviting as the temptation to keep on walking a little... further.
Just a little more.
Artifacts, by Evan Dahm
Tumblr media
I have a complicated relationship with the phrase ‘cosmic horror’. Once you get too good a look at the lineage of the ideas it’s... well folks, it’s kind of all racism and penguins down there. But I still remember the thrill at the idea- the notion of something... so strange and unknowable. The idea that there is a scale of size we can’t even begin to comprehend; that we might as well be ants, blindly trying to make sense of things we can’t even see.
This story makes me feel like I’m sitting between the stacks of the library, lost in the quiet terror of the idea of those horizons dropping away.
Tumblr media
To me, making our protagonist an artist solves- immediately- a lot of the problem this kind of story can have. Why exactly would someone be studying something that leads somewhere... so odd? When its a scientist, or a researcher, it feels natural, but can get... odd. Not a lot of theoretical whatever's take hikes into abandoned buildings. But fine artists will do a lot of things. I learned in class about a man who laid under the floorboards of a gallery space making weird noises.
A single man, slowly working and working and working on making something.... pure. Approaching something big. It could have happened already.
That’s all for this week- I’ll continue reviewing this in short sections of my favorites. Check it out sometime if you can! I will say chapters I didn’t get to do have some raw stuff in them; as with any horror, specific subjects can kind of lunge at you.
But it’s a representation of what I absolutely love: An independent, off the wall, beautiful set of horror comics.
And as always... souichi WILL return!

This summer, Walmart shoppers will receive a personal invitation to discover the lore behind their favorite DC experiences as DC Entertainment announced today that a series of “giant” monthly comics will be sold exclusively in more than 3,000 participating Walmart stores around the country.
Available for $4.99, each 100-page anthology features all-new stories written exclusively for these books by some of DC’s top creative talents, including Tom King (BATMAN, MISTER MIRACLE, HEROES IN CRISIS), Dan Jurgens (ACTION COMICS, BATMAN BEYOND), Brian Michael Bendis (SUPERMAN, ACTION COMICS, THE MAN OF STEEL), Andy Kubert (NEW CHALLENGERS) and others. Each title will also include additional story arcs drawn from fan-favorite DC eras such as the New 52, Rebirth and the New Age of DC Heroes.
Each of the four titles – SUPERMAN GIANT, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA GIANT, BATMAN GIANT and TEEN TITANS GIANT – will arrive in stores by July 1. Beginning in August, the Superman and Justice League of America titles will arrive in week one of each month, with the second pair, Batman and Teen Titans, arriving approximately two weeks later.
“We are extraordinarily excited about working with Walmart to expand the reach of our books,” said DC Publisher Dan DiDio.  “These new monthly books combine new and accessible stories with reprints of classic comic series. It’s a great way for new readers to get into comics and follow the characters they’ve grown to love in TV and film.”
  The debut title lineup includes:
SUPERMAN GIANT #1
SUPERMAN GIANT #1 features chapter one of the two-part “Endurance,” an original story written by Jimmy Palmiotti (HARLEY QUINN, ACTION COMICS) with art by Tom Derenick (HARLEY QUINN, CYBORG, BATMAN/SUPERMAN). The Daily Planet sends Clark Kent to Tornado Alley to do a story on the area, but when the storm hits, it turns out that this mild-mannered reporter is more helpful as Superman.
The issue also includes:
THE TERRIFICS #1 (2018) – From this year’s New Age of Heroes and born of the events of DC’s hit series DARK NIGHTS: METAL. Mr. Terrific, Metamorpho, Plastic Man and Phantom Girl are a team of heroes bound together by fate and united by the spirit of exploration and discovery. Together these heroes plumb the depths of the fantastic to learn what it means to become family.
GREEN LANTERN #1 (2005) – Written by best-selling writer Geoff Johns with art by Ethan Van Sciver and Carlos Pacheco, this first chapter launches the fan-favorite three-part story “No Fear,” in which Hal Jordan makes his return to the DC Universe as the Green Lantern, casting the light of justice on the darkest corners of Space Sector 2814.
SUPERMAN/BATMAN #1 (2003) – The iconic fan-favorite story arc, “Public Enemies,” returns, courtesy of writer Jeph Loeb, with artists Ed McGuinness and Tim Sale. Batman and Superman unite when President Lex Luthor accuses the Man of Steel of a crime against humanity and assembles a top-secret team of powerhouse heroes to bring Superman in by any means necessary.
September’s SUPERMAN GIANT #3 features Eisner Award-winning writer Tom King’s first return to the Man of Steel since his poignant and heartfelt tribute story, “For Tomorrow,” in the pages of ACTION COMICS #1000. Together with DC Master Class artist Andy Kubert, this powerhouse team will take readers on a new 12-part adventure titled “Up in the Sky!” When a little girl is kidnapped and taken from Earth, Superman embarks on a galaxy-spanning mission to find the perpetrators…but has to decide what lengths he will go to in order to save one life!
  TEEN TITANS GIANT #1
In this original six-part Teen Titans story by Dan Jurgens with art by Scot Eaton, Wayne Faucher and Jim Charalampidis, the Teen Titans’ pizza dinner is interrupted by the introduction of a new villain, the Disruptor. Teaming up with the Fearsome Five and working as an agent of H.I.V.E., he had one mission: kill the Teen Titans! The battle spills onto the streets of San Francisco, putting its citizens at risk, while H.I.V.E. uses this distraction to begin their plan for world conquest!
