With all the fun tag games circulating on Tumblr, I decided to start a small one of my own. 😁

Brevity.

You are bound to experience mood whiplash.

Characters are crying all the time for both joyful and sorrowful reasons.

Detailed descriptions of food & drink.

Liberal usage of em dashes, colons, and parentheses.

Romance, romance, romance!

The tender beauty of redemption and restoration.

Breaking the unspoken rules of writing. Never use the First Person POV? Challenge accepted. Stay away from similes like "red as a tomato"? Watch me do it. Et cetera.

The journey can be angsty but the ending must be happy. No exceptions.

The End (bold and centered) is written at the conclusion of every story, whether it is a one-shot or a multi-chapter.

ok, i gotta tell you just how EXCITED i was when i got tagged in this, because

i saw it earlier this week, just as me and a friend were talking about our misspent youths, which for both of us involved an awful lot of “stockpiling dope midi file versions of various anime theme songs,” right

and i was like “bro i still have my WHOLE COLLECTION,” and we spent a VERY pleasant evening nostalgia’ing over the tracks i found, and now here i am, days later, sharing ten of my dopest midi files with you as well (& all my fine fine followers ofc)

abyss.mid: god wasn’t this song so sick when it was in dance dance revolution

galaxia.mid: i have NO IDEA what song is from.  hmu if you recognize it?  lil’ kid me was impressed with its majestic scope, its sick reverb, its really fun ancient-temple-y orchestration, and, ok yeah adult me agrees this one rules

giveareason.mid: i have never watched slayers in my life but i have listened to the midi of its theme song approximately one billion times

lastempl.mid: i think this is the last temple theme of one of the earlier zelda games?  i like how AGGRESSIVE it is, just, RIGHT out of the gate it’s loud and in your face

nightwait.mid: *old man voice* back in my day we didn’t have enough space to download em pee threes.  we had to collect midi files of cool pop songs.  such as jennifer lopez’s classic “waiting for tonight”

SD3_-_Innocent_Sea.mid: it’s a tune from Seiken Densetsu 3, a game soundtrack i find overall tragically underrated.  (the whole series, really; Secret of Mana has some absolute bangers too!)  anyway “Innocent Sea” and its companion “Innocent Water” have fucked me up for years; ask me to play the latter on the piano at a nerd convention sometime

sealcrazy.mid: there was this one wildlife artist who sold his art on his lovingly handcrafted website and he had a different midi file for each page.  like each piece of art for sale had its own page.  anyway this was my introduction to Seal, though i didn't realize it until i heard it on the radio when i was 25 and was like HOLY SHIT IT'S THE LIVE VERSION OF THAT MIDI FILE

song1.mid: i think this one might be from Ultima?  like the original Ultima online?  but i’m really not sure; i found it on a Geocities website for this horse roleplaying game called Black & Blue where this song played in the background during its cool Javascript intro page, where they told the story of The Falling-Out Between The Two Brothers That Has Now Cleaved Our Realm Into Two, and like, text would fade in & out in sync with the music?  such a sick effect.  loved it

song2.mid: this played once you entered the main part of the site.  might be another Ultima song.  who fuckin knows

SongoftheWolf.mid: some of you didn’t listen to an absolutely disgusting number of world music albums + Enya during your formative years and it shows

Tagged by @cyanoscarlet (long time, no see!) to share the latest line from a project and tagging as many people as there are words. So, considering I posted this project yesterday and I'm in no mood to go hunting for WIPs right now, here are some lines from Remind Me When It Rains. They're not the last lines by any means, but I like the feel of them. And they feel relatable.

He is perfect in every way — in the same way, or even moreso, with how a writer would view their work.

Until the summary doesn’t line up with what’s actually in the pages. Until the title doesn’t cut it; something fancy is on par with a salad bar with chocolate dressing, that kind of world would rag the critics. And until the story lost its heart, or grew a new one in its place, or knew exactly what was needed to bring the plot threads into place. And he’s as perfect as every story’s not the newest thing in literature, but is comforting and on the bookshelf with all its corners bent at places.

Okay so I'm actually outlining right now and thus don't have a running body of actual sentences I'm working on, but the last sentence I've jotted down as likely to make it into the fic is:

"His Grace"'s pure heritage is a fiction--an immaculate conception of paper and perjury

Explanation: attempting to novelize Dion's entire coming of age because I'm insane and thinking about what he might have overheard that makes him seem unsurprised, by the time of canon, when Anabella mentions his mother. Anyway it's not an awesome thing to overhear at 12/13 right after getting a terrible new stepmom.

according to my friend, dialogue. but I feel like I'm much better at narrative flow and description now than I was a year ago.

We all project onto our characters. Where has your personality or life choices leaked onto the page the most?

uhh my eating disorder and my generalized trust issues! there's probably a lot of things but I pay too much attention to how a character would process things to really project sometimes.

How are you procrastinating today?

I am not! I wrote 2k very very early this morning and I wrote the end of that fic this afternoon. I've written a lot lately.

Happy Fanfic Writer Friday! Describe a typical writing session/day for you. Do you have any specific conditions/rituals to get into the zone, or do you just tend to go wild/whatever?

Oh gosh, it’s kind of a disaster? 😂

Sometimes I get spur of the moment ideas that I just leap onto AO3 to start writing. I did that with People Are Strange (I heard the song, it got stuck in my head, and I was thinking about flowers at the time) and Waiting for Godot (I just saw a YouTube video for it and immediately wanted to write a fic), Other ideas, I spend a few days just toying with the idea and thinking about it, until I decide that it’s good enough to put to paper and explore. That’s how I start out fics, anyways. 

They get started with a blurb in the summary that is me goblin-speaking to myself about what I want to take the fic’s direction in. It is...really horrible goblin-speak that I deviate from a LOT, but it’s the gist of what my starting point is.

Example:

oh definitely use jorogumo. sneezing and half-drowned at a graveyard where chuuya gets completely narced, dark era. also dazai shit and chuuya being outraged that dazai doesnt give enough of a crap about him to stay alive—them working through a harsh breakup.

When I sit down to work on a fic that is in-progress, I generally need to be in a good mood, and I need absolute silence when I’m getting started. No music, no background noise, nothing. I’ve found it much easier to get into the zone since I started outlining, as usually I spend most of my time pre-zone trying to think of what I want to continue the fic with.

I tend to visualize the scene in my head and look for a good starting point, and once I figure one out, I’m in the zone. I don’t have to worry about being distracted or losing that energy once I’m there—I got into the zone on Sunday and have pretty much been in the writing zone all week. I worked on a fic that didn’t have any outline and finished it up, and then once I was done, I moved to an outlined fic, which means I didn’t just fall out of the zone afterwards XD. If that makes sense. 

I suppose to me, it’s finding a spark of passion and just feeling happy and good about my works, and then I get to the writing part and I sink into the emotions of the scene that I’m working on, which helps to push me forwards.

It isn’t the sort of news that [REDACTED] hoped to hear upon his return to this small town for the first time in three years. The shock cuts through the dull cold of a midwinter morning in the new year, through [REDACTED] and even through the [REDACTED] concealed beneath it.

not really sure how much of this baby i can bring out before the official promos of the big bang begin so i just compensated for the redactions with an extra sentence! but i am excited to finally be working on this after... uh... nearly two years and one nanowrimo attempt later?

Hi! I read The Basis of Realities just now in one sitting. Thank you for this wonderful story; as I type this, I am waiting for the results of our local physician licensure examination (which should come out any minute now, but hasn’t yet at this time lol huhu), and I admit it has, for lack of better wording, set most of us at edge. "I’ll miss you," Atsushi taps on the tunnel glass, blinking away the tears threatening to form.

Ryuunosuke has a wan smile on his face, as well. "So will I."

"I’ll come by as often as I can."

"Don’t be so rash. You can't be here anymore."

"Oh, right." Atsushi lets out a weak, broken laugh.

They both approach the glass dividing them, clear as crystal yet so frustratingly blurry. Just barely two centimeters between them— so near, yet so far. Pressing their faces together as close as possible, they look into each other's eyes, memorizing facial features they have come to love for what might be the last time.
