By the time Dmitri and Vince meet, Dmitri is nearly 40, and Vince is in his late thirties. Dmitri has gone through a lot of therapy by then, so part of me doubts Owen would see that as a threat.

I was wondering what exactly are Iliya and Dimitri’s opinion on Ben? And also what are some differences in the way the two characters treat him?

Ben is the latest of Volkov’s toys. However, like Volkov, they see Ben as fresh meat. He’s never been a victim before and they smell blood in the water. They both enjoy watching him suffer and there’s probably been many evenings when they were doing abusing Ben that they either had to go take a cold shower or finish themselves off. Dmitri is always trying to get Volkov’s approval. Volkov is his mentor and has been for some time now. He has that same deep sadistic streak in him that lets him get off on inflicting pain and enjoying people suffering. He also thoroughly enjoys humiliating people. Ilya, while also nursing a hefty sadistic streak that Volkov works to cultivate, is not quite as creative in ways to abuse people. He doesn't like playing second fiddle to Dmitri, but he knows he hasn't earned the number two position yet. Ilya tends to rush things and accidentally inflict worse damage than he intends, like we saw when he tried to force feed Ben when he was sick. At the end of the day, Ilya is more of a brute and less clever than Dmitri. Dmitri is more subtle and cruel in his methods, like when he caned Ben and spent the last several strokes hitting him in the exact same spot.

Дмитрий Аске — российский художник, который пришел в современное искусство, имея за плечами опыт граффити-райтера. Родился в 1985 г. в Москве, учился на графического дизайнера. С 2000-х гг. занимался граффити, иллюстрацией и графическим дизайном. Аске разработал собственную узнаваемую стилистику: художник составляет изображение из нескольких сотен фрагментов, напоминая мозаику, рельеф и витраж, заполненных яркими локальными цветами. При этом стиль этих объемных картин отсылает к компьютерной графике, напоминая кадры из анимационных фильмов или изображения, увиденные в очках виртуальной реальности. Сам Аске говорит, что на его творчество повлияли Lego, видеоигры, советские мозаики и плакаты, которые остались в его памяти с детства.

Художник сотрудничал с такими известными брендами, как Nike, Reebok, Sony PlayStation и др. С 2005 г. участвует в групповых выставках в Бельгии, Великобритании, Германии, Мексике, России, США. Первая персональная выставка состоялась в 2016 г. во VLADEY Space. Работы находятся в частных российских коллекциях. Dmitry Aske is a Russian artist who came to contemporary art with experience as a graffiti writer. Born in 1985 in Moscow, he studied to become a graphic designer. Since the 2000s worked in graffiti, illustration and graphic design. Aske has developed his own recognizable style: the artist composes an image from several hundred fragments, reminiscent of mosaic, relief and stained glass, filled with bright local colors. At the same time, the style of these three-dimensional paintings refers to computer graphics, reminiscent of frames from animated films or images seen in virtual reality glasses. Aske himself says that his work is influenced by Lego, video games, Soviet mosaics and posters, which remained in his memory from childhood.

The artist has collaborated with such famous brands as Nike, Reebok, Sony PlayStation, etc. Since 2005, he has participated in group exhibitions in Belgium, Great Britain, Germany, Mexico, Russia, and the USA. The first personal exhibition took place in 2016 at VLADEY Space. The works are in private Russian collections. Currently, Dmitry Aske creates outdoor large-format sculptures and interior multi-layered plywood reliefs.

I saw a post complaining about musical Dimitri so I want to know what is your favourite things about him in the musical?

sigh... musical dmitry... giggling kicking my feet twirling my hair thinking about him. i'm always daydreaming about him. if you saw me on the street irl i almost guarantee you'd catch me lost in some variation of musical dmitry thoughts.

there are so many things i could say here, anon. his redemption arc™ from a selfish liar to the most noble and self-sacrificing slavic sadboy i've ever seen? his angsty daddy issues backstory? his bewitching silly goose ways? how he lets One Woman completely change the trajectory of his life? how he falls into an emotional spiral about it? the way he Knows Who He Is and is very self assured in his identity, and helps anya do the same? how his identity is so intertwined with his home? his role as a Storyteller™? etc????

but for this ask today i'm going to focus on how gentle he is. i don't think gentleness is something that comes very easy to this dmitry. he lost his father at a young age, as we know. he was alone on the streets and had to fight to stay alive. he cons people for a living. by the time we meet him he's very cynical about the world and doesn't really trust anyone, other than vlad. mostly he just relies on himself and can't really count on anyone else. when he meets anya, a cryptic girl who is a bit off but in need of help, his first response is to scoff and send her away, since unstable people are too risky to deal with. he's capable of being charming, but he uses this skill to get what he wants.

a lesser character with an identical backstory would be gruff and unfeeling, but... this dmitry isn't. in spite of it all, he's so hopeful, though he buries it deep. his most treasured story is about a girl he met at a parade. he is known as the 'prince of petersburg,' has a relationship with everyone on the streets. in the hartford production he calls an older woman in the ensemble 'little mother.' he rescues vlad, a complete stranger, from a firing squad. and though he turns her down at first, he agrees to get anya to paris. he protects what's his own.

you can tell it takes him a while to learn gentleness. whether it's physical or verbal, especially around anya, he is still always on the defensive for a while. fight first, think later. she's really jumpy and skittish but he doesn't start changing his behavior until they fight the ruffians together. he flags all of his movements around her, making sure she knows his intentions first. he talks about his father. he gives her a music box because he thinks it'll make her smile. because she 'earned it.' when she's crying after a nightmare he tells her a sweet, simple story from his childhood.

the train scene is the best example of this shift-- when she cowers after the gunshot goes off, he is completely lost about what to do. 'calm her down,' vlad tells him, but how is he supposed to do that? she's sobbing into his shoulder and he's frozen, panicking, because what is he supposed to do here??? but he shushes her and holds her anyway. he does his best. and it works. in such a tense situation where they very well could be shot next he is so so gentle and patient with her. and by the time we reach iacot in paris, he knows exactly how to comfort her. he learned how to hold her gently and speak in a soft voice. how softness can ground someone in need.

to summarize: musical dmitry is... really soft? and softness/gentleness isn't really something you see in the conman archetype very often. he is so special.

I just reread Incognito and I was wondering if Kauri told Nat that he saw Vince with someone since she likes to keep tabs on him

So Kauri, Vince, and Nat are not mine they're @ashintheairlikesnow 's ocs but I'll give my 2 cents.

No, I don't think so. In my head when writing Kauri, he doesn't realize it's Vince when he first comes over. Dmitris an acquaintance who's never been out with someone as far as Kauris noticed and he just wanted to make small talk. He only notices that it's Vince after he's there. Kauri also doesn't talk to Vince, just steals his drink.

How I write Vince and Kauri interactions is with the reminder that Kauri accociates Vince with Owen. If he wants to distance himself from all things Owen, he needs to distance himself from Vince. Owen stole his entire life because he had an issue with Vince rejecting him. Kauri probably never brought it up since it would make him remember that Owen happened.
