Not sure if you've ever made a post like this/someone has already asked this and you've answered but I was wondering if you had a list of J&H adaptions (of any kind and as well as other fans making things that are just online stuff rather than big professional things) that you really like and think people should get into if they haven't really explored or even know of just yet? I'm curious because I've only branched out a little bit and got some stuff that was fairly. Meh.

I have made a few posts about the matter but! I’ll gladly repeat myself.

the trick with finding good J&H adaptations is to forget about 1:1 plot accuracy and instead focus on theme accuracy. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to discover a lot of adaptations (including crossovers and pastiches) understand the book and what it’s getting at.

Here’s my personal list of recommendations:

-MazM Jekyll and Hyde: a Korean visual novel that adapts the book to a T. The main timeline (chapters 1-8) are free to play, but chapters 9-10 and a few other tidbits are very cheap. Since it’s styled like an RPG, you can talk to NPCs that will give you some insight in the historical and cultural context of the novella. It has a spin-off game called Hyde and Seek in which Hyde is one of the antagonists, if you’re interested.

-Le Testament du Docteur Cordelier aka The Doctor’s Horrible Experiment: originally released as a TV movie in 1959 but later released in cinemas, this Jean Renoir production tightly follows the book plot with very small changes. The biggest change is that the story is set in 1950s Paris rather than 1880s England, with all the characters having different names. It has a budget of five dollars and a shoestring but it’s very well written and well acted, with a professional mime playing Jekyll and Hyde. My friend @nemeyuko has a copy with English subtitles. WARNING: there is a rape scene near the end.

-I, Monster: a 1971 Amicus production (basically a knockoff Hammer movie) with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing as the leads. Some character’s names and events are changed, but the plot is very much recognizable as a Jekyll and Hyde adaptation. The setting is also changed to the Edwardian period. This adaptation focuses on the psychological element of the story, including overt references to Freud and modern psychoanalysis, and putting the spotlight on Jekyll’s addiction to the serum.

-The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: 2003 Norrington movie that has almost nothing to do with the comics it was adapting from, but it’s considered more enjoyable by most people since it isn’t as dark and gritty. I specially recommend the movie for its take on Jekyll/Hyde, since it doesn’t shy away from the addiction angle. Hyde is entirely done with practical effects. The movie novelization is available in the Internet Archive, and it has a bit more focus on Hyde.

-Jekyll and Hyde at the Old Vic: a dance adaptation that reimagines Jekyll as a dorky botanist in 1950s England. It doesn’t have any dialogue and it’s mostly about an angsty love story but I really liked it (basically imagine Jekyll and Hyde meets Little Shop Of Horrors, and I’m not exaggerating!). It was available for free on YouTube a while ago but it’s been taken down- if anybody has any recordings let me know!

I have a rather lengthy list of adaptations I’m watching on YouTube, a lot of which I haven’t even started yet (and a lot of which aren’t particularly worthwhile) but here’s a little documentary and a couple of funny sketches.

Pirates of the Caribbean (started off with Commodore Norrington/Jack Sparrow, couldn't make it work for me and jumped sideways into Norrington and Lt. Gillette)

Marvel - (the Thor movies reactivated a nascent fascination with Loki, so I dragged a whole bunch of mythology into the MCU fandom.)

Stargate Universe (all about Colonel Young)

Star Wars (Sequel trilogy - all about General Hux)

The Untamed (all about Jin Guangyao)

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

A Kindness Repaid - in which Loki and Captain America become friends

Supervillain Honeymoon - someone wrote a fic in response to A Kindness Repaid in which Loki and Steve got married, so I had to write a fic in response to that, in which I figured out how the Asgardians and the Avengers would take the news

The Same Last Name and the Same Coloured Eyes - in which Jin Zixuan decides to be a good big brother to Jin Guangyao, and averts most of the tragedy of The Untamed as a result

Defying His Doom - in which Doctor Doom inspires Loki to improve his public image, and they end up winning a Nobel Peace Prize.

Stepping Stones - an epic Stargate Universe fic I wrote with @seekingidlewild, in which an accident with the communication stones leaves Rush and Young bodyswapped and all communication from Earth cut off

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Of course I do! I've met all my best fandom friends by chatting with them in the comments of fic (mine and theirs.) Also who doesn't love talking to people about their writing?

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I tend to avoid angsty endings if I can. That said, it's probably Battle of the Golden Wood which ends with Galadriel and Celeborn saying goodbye, as she leaves Middle-earth and he refuses to follow.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Hard to say - I tend to make them all as happy as possible. If I can save the world at the same time, I'll do that too. Maybe Seeds of Old Trees, which gets Celeborn and Galadriel back together and sets Tolkien's elves on a path towards a future of exploring outer space.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I have had some rude and entitled comments. People trying to convince me that my blorbo is actually a terrible person who should be locked up (SGU) or that my understanding of the lore is faulty (Tolkien) and therefore I should have written a different story from the one I actually wrote. But I wouldn't really call that hate.

9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Heh, it's funny. I came into fanfic repressed and writing gen. Then I unpacked the repression, had about ten years writing slash, during which I discovered the queer community, wrestled with God and came out as an asexual queer Christian. Then I leaned into the asexuality and ended up writing gen again.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

In general I don't, but the craziest one is also the only one I've written - Strange Meetings in which Qui-Gon crash lands in Middle-earth and meets Legolas. They were going to go to the drowned ruins of Doriath and recover a Silmaril, but I lost interest after a couple of chapters.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I'm aware of

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

The same last name and the same coloured eyes has been translated into Russian, and I think one of my Tolkien fics was translated into Chinese, but that was on a non-Ao3 site.

13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?

Absolutely! I wrote a number of Elu Thingol/Celeborn fics in the Tolkien fandom with Mirien, and Stepping Stones (where Rush and Young are bodyswapped, and Skipping Stones (where Young is age-regressed into a child) with @seekingidlewild

I loved it! It's a great experience writing with someone whose writing you already enjoy. Lots of bouncing ideas off each other and excitement - and of course it's half as hard and twice as fast as doing it all yourself.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

I don't think I have one. I'm honestly a single blorbo at a time writer, and I will read and write fics in which that blorbo is paired with just about anyone. I'm not particularly bothered which ship they're in.

I do have a soft spot for Rush/Young though, because they have such in-your- face dysfunctional obsessional chemistry on the show. And in contrast I also love Xiyao (Lan Xichen/Jin Guangyao) because they are so obviously in such a gentle, radiant sort of love, that I choose to believe would have survived the revelation of Jin Guangyao's multiple murders.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

I would have said Do Not Bear Grudges, which was going to be my JGY resurrection fic, but it fought me so hard that I ended up deleting what I'd already written and I'm glad to have it gone.

I still vaguely wish that I had finished The Stolen Ones however, which was about Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi and was jossed by the Jedi Apprentice books. (I still think mine was better.)

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think I'm pretty good at description/settings/worldbuilding, and I often have an unusual take on things due to my non-neurotypicalness.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I'm not great at giving each character their own unique voice, so my dialogue can get a bit samey. Also I forget that characters can lie - all my characters pretty much tell the truth all the time, which makes it difficult writing the kind of sneaky characters I so love, like Loki, JGY later movies!Hux and even Rush.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I could not do it. Massive respect and kudos to anyone who writes in a second language. It is beyond me.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, when it first came out. The internet was on dial-up and fandom was on yahoo groups. It was the first time in my life I'd ever been able to speak to other sci-fi geeks like myself. An amazing experience, and good times!

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

I know it's cheating a bit to choose more than one, but these three hang together as a series, telling the story of Celeborn and Galadriel from first meeting, to tragic parting and final reunion Oak and Willow, Battle of the Golden Wood, and Seeds of Old Trees. At about 140,000 words, it's a good size novel. And of all the characters I've stanned over the years I still feel Celeborn needed me the most. (Though Colonel Young comes a close second there.)

That is.... that is actually incredibly interesting.

I'm trying to think if it's accurate - it certainly is for Stede and Giles. To an extent for Avon, although I would argue "sheltered". And it's hard to say for the 10th Doctor... what does upper class even mean for a time lord? But he does sort of come across that way, doesn't he. Huh. And before tumblr, there was Salieri... sort of fits too. And Sweeney Todd - well there's definitely a counter example. Norrington though? Bang on.

if i may have two: Cardamom and Semper Augustus?

Cardamon is something I've just started writing, actually! I've had some shit happening in my life that caused my ptsd to ramp up high, and since I know it helps to write such shit out sometimes, I decided to do just that. But, being the silverflint idiot that I am, I immediately thought of putting one of them into a situation where they would have to deal with their own mind (and have the other one help them, of course).

I have written a fic with a similar title (Cinnamon), and it seemed like a good idea to write a sequel. In the previous one, Flint is hurt and Silver takes on the nursing duties, despite his own dislike for Howell that brings his ptsd to light from time to time. I just brushed over the topic in the previous one, because it was Flint who was the focus of the fic. Now I'm shuffling it and having Silver be the one needing help (because our lovely idiot cat didn't take care of his leg, so now someone needs to help him). This time Flint volunteers and helps him through it by being supportive and respecting Silver's wishes while coaxing him on <3 Fair warning for a little bit of a more negative Howell portrayal, however, but that's not because he's a bad guy. Silver and Flint have simply been hurt by him in the process, so their feelings are different.

Snippet:

Silver was curled up at the window seat, backed up into the furthest corner of it, and it seemed that if it hadn’t been for the sturdy glass behind him, he would have climbed outside of the ship. Howell was hovering in front of him, an air of exasperation hanging around him like a dark cloud, visible in the tired grimace he was wearing. 

“Please…” John whimpered, and one look at his wild, panicked eyes was everything one needed to assess the mental state he was in. It rattled something inside James, his own memories surfacing and making his skin crawl. 

“What the fuck is going on here?” He left the door open behind him as he walked across the cabin, his stride purposeful. He had a fleeting thought of wolves and bears, but it was too brief to examine it closely, not when John was still curled up in a tight ball in a fit of blind panic. “Captain,” Howell greeted him with a long-suffering sigh, and Flint was abruptly reminded exactly why he disliked the man. He was a very competent doctor, skilled with his blades and knowledgeable in different medications… 

He was also occasionally dumb as a brick and had the sensitivity of a half-dead eel. 

Semper Augustus on the other hand... Semper Augustus is a species of Tulip (or was, I believe it's extinct now). It was the priciest one in the history of all flowers being sold around that time, and the price of one bulb was enough to buy a house at the prime of Europe's madness, if I recall correctly (it's been two years since I've started writing that, it's on hold currently).

The fic is another part of my series about Jack Sparrow/James Norrington, where they are sorta together, but trying to be inconspicuous. Jack is spiraling down into madness on voyages, and when Gibbs confronts him about it, he tells him that Augustus is dying. Thinking he's talking to ghosts or imaginary friends, Gibbs gets into a quarrel with him (he's worried, alright?), only to have Jack pull out the tulip like here. Augustus. (The tulip is an extravagant gift for his Commodore, which he knows the man will appreciate, since he had seen a painting of them hanging in Norrington's parlor. And yes, that's exactly what people were doing at that time - the tulips were so expensive people couldn't buy them, so a painting of them was cheaper, no matter how pricy it was by itself).

It's a silly little thing, awaiting my return to finish it. I've been slightly fascinated at that time with those tulips, and if I recall correctly, they were so sought out because of their coloring, which was the result of either a mutation or an infection or something. That's why they aren't around anymore :D

Snippet:

“This one looks promising,” Jack announced, looking through his spyglass, eyeing an island not far away from their current position. “Shall we… Let go the anchor?” Gibbs hesitated, frowning when the captain turned on him sharply. “Of course! What am I payin’ ye for, ye lousy scoundrels?” Jack growled. “Drop t’ anchor! Ready t’ longboat!” He shouted across the deck, and the pirates scrambled to obey, not willing to risk any further worsening of their captain’s mood. 

The truth was, ever since they had taken the Dutch ship, Jack’s disposition had been souring while he kept chasing them from one island to another, ordering them to come ashore and dig until they found some actual dirt underneath the sand. They hadn’t always been successful. Afterwards, he usually pushed his own hands into the earth, ran it through his fingers thoughtfully, before he proceeded to blow on it, sniff it and even lick it, trying to determine its quality. What for, none of them could tell, but they had collectively decided to just shut up and let him do whatever he wanted, hoping that the answer would present itself at a later date. 

Before they all went mad, preferably. 

“Is that one good, Capt’n?” Gibbs asked doubtfully, watching as Jack frowned at a lump of earth as dark as the kohl around his eyes. The captain squinted, then shook his head. “Nay,” he muttered. “It needs to be more…” He trailed off, waving his hands in the air, almost hitting Pintel on the nose. “Dirty! More like dirt! With sand!” “...sand?” The quartermaster blinked at him dumbly, then glanced at the beach surrounding them. “Aye! Sand!” And Jack wandered off, heading back to the longboat. With a sigh, the men took their shovels and followed.

a moderate spoiler-that-isn't-a-spoiler, but this chapter is gonna contain a lot of incredibly iconic scenes that i have to clumsily stumble through like a newborn faun. take something entirely different instead

“How is our patient this morning?” Norrington asks Doctor Hawkins nearby. “Not giving you too much trouble, I hope? “Only the same trouble that his captain brings,” Hawkins says, “in that he is eager to work rather than rest.” Pointedly, he glances up from his report, looking not at Norrington’s eyes but his arm, as though he can see through his coat to the wound beneath. Norrington awkwardly crosses his arms, winces at the pain, and looks down to avoid Hawkins’ knowing gaze. “We are only impatient to serve,” Tempest says meekly, a remarkable feat for a 12-ton beast. “He must stay off the wing for two days — then short flights only for another two,” Hawkins tells Norrington. “That is why he is upset. I would keep him for a week if I could; I dare not make the suggestion lest you rebel in earnest.” “It is appreciated, Hawkins. Your patience is more than we deserve.” The doctor only grunts, leaving Norrington to his thoughts.

Customs and Duties, my beloathed of over three years now (though s/o to @theonlyredcar for letting me talk out the last few ten chapters, suggesting many painful twists, skillfully evoking the specter of North and South, and arguing with me about what circumstances would be necessary for Nellie to try to stab a man with a butterknife. you're the real mvp my dear. <3)

I'm also poking at two different fics for the FicWIP 5,000 word AU challenge - one the long-threatened Mercy Street AU, and the other and the other I believe I've mentioned too many times before - but the AU version of the "Swann Song" deleted scene in PotC:AWE, where Norrington does just. stab the heart.

11. Do you have specific playlists for writing fics?

Yes and no? This playlist isn't mine, but I usually have it on in the background while I'm writing; I do have two different playlists for Customs and Duties, but they're more for, ah, kicking ideas around/thinking about The Characters, rather than writing. Truthfully I have a hard time hearing my own thoughts while listening to music with a vocal component, so I tend to write in silence or with quiet instrumentals on in the background.

17. What's something you've learned about while doing research for a fic?

Did you know that, during the American Civil War, typhoid accounted for 17% of patient deaths in Union military hospitals in 1861, but 56% in 1865? (from Toler's Heroines of Mercy Street, quoting Adams's Doctors in Blue). I think I'd rather be shot with a minie ball, but only just.
