Me: “Ah yes. The infamous multi fandom character “Yes/No” is at it again.”

The fact that Main-verse Ooo is as good and as kind as it is (relative to the other universes shown so far, at least, it's obviously not perfect) all because of the same character that starts off as the OG series' antagonist, the person we were made to see as the bad guy (albeit an often ineffectual one) for several seasons, is making me lose my mind.
Imagine finding out the guy you spent your childhood beating up and saving princesses from is in fact a driving catalyst behind you being able to exist, and not only exist but also live in a world that knows what kindness is. All because that man, the same man who you've witnessed do terrible things, once met a little girl and taught her how to be good.
Simon's story really shows us that even if you lose your way and forget how it is to be good yourself, the world keeps the memory for you. That act of love Simon showed Marcy by protecting her and seeing her as more than the monster she thought herself to be created ripples upon ripples, small at first but eventually enough to help give their wreckage of a world—a world that easily could have been forsaken, its goodness overlooked because of its inhospitable remains—a chance to grow into something beautiful. Because of those very same ripples Simon created, the people of Ooo grew up in a world where they know enough about kindness that they were able and willing to spare the 'bad guy' some, to see beyond the wreckage and allow him to grow too.
In saving Marceline, Simon helped to not only to save the world, but also himself.

Potential elements of a coming-of-age arc:
Identity: Learning who you are outside of the family structure
Responsibility: Taking care of other people instead of being taken care of; making your own choices and taking the consequences upon yourself
Values: Deciding which values you will live your life by--holding onto the values of childhood or taking up new values--and using these to inform your adult decisions
Wisdom: Overcoming a childish misconception of reality and coming to a more realistic understanding of how the world works, so you can use this new knowledge to inform your decisions

I like to think that Gorgug hangs out with the seven the way Zelda hangs out with the bad kids. You know that horrible awkward feeling where you only know one person at a party? It’s like that but everyone else at the party is inseparable and they keep teasing you (in a good-natured way) with jokes you don’t understand, and all you can do is smile and nod and try so hard not to embarrass yourself in front of these people you perceive as way too cool for you.

Whumper-Turned-Caretaker CYOA 2
CW for the series
You chose to let them sleep undisturbed.
You decide to let Whumpee rest. Goodness knows they need it. And getting enough rest is important for any sort of recovery, right?
You leave the stairway and close the door behind you quietly, leaving them to sleep in peace. In the meantime, you double-check the supplies you have. The first-aid kit and the fridge are both fully stocked. You scrounge up some clean clothes that are about Whumpee’s size and will probably be comfortable on them. All set for now.
After giving them a few hours, you go check on Whumpee. They’re awake now. Their wide eyes were on you the moment they heard you open the door. You head down the stairs, trying not to appear menacing but knowing they’re probably scared anyway. You give them a smile. “Hi, Whumpee.”
“Hi,” they respond fearfully, shying away from you. They’re visibly afraid; you can’t blame them, given what your interactions with them are usually like.
You’re not going to lie to yourself, you like the fear. Now that you’re trying to help Whumpee get better, however, it’s probably no longer a good thing that they’re scared of you.
The sleep seems to have done them some good at least; they seem fully alert and the circles under their eyes have faded a good deal. Great. Time to figure out what kind of care to give them next.

happy two years anniversary to Drugs and surgical scrubs! 🎉🎂
a lil birthday snippet:
“All I ask for in return is that you get clean, James. I will help you in any way you need, but I need you sober. That is my one condition.”
James closed his eyes, letting the breeze cool his eyelids. Everything seemed so simple with Regulus, as if all James had to do was say yes and life will be perfect again.
“Everything will remain the same as long as I stay clean,” James mused and words tasted like a magic spell on his tongue, finally powerful enough to win over the all mighty heroin.
“Yes. Nothing has to change.”
James smiled at himself without opening his eyes. There was a tiny detail Regulus omitted.
Nothing has to change as long as James will.

I think that, for a lot of her life, Bonnie is very much unaware that the world is not a fun game. (EDIT: more accurate phrasing might be “that a fun game is not the world.”) I think she puts a lot of unconscious and semi-conscious effort into avoiding reality for her own safety and sanity, but I don’t think she actually tries to use others as pawns. She’s very isolated emotionally speaking (as in she is around a lot of people but rarely makes deep connections with them) and struggles with empathy. She makes things a certain way, it keeps her and her loved ones (okay mostly Neddy) safe, so she sees no reason to change it, even if/when she’s unhappy. This bitch was born with a certain amount of understanding of the living world and how to interact with it, and for a long time, she had no reason to doubt that that was all there was to it. She was a child (emotionally and socially and experientially) who thought she was a grownup simply because she was smart and capable of keeping herself and her brother alive and him content. While Marceline’s emotional growth was stunted at a hugely volatile stage, Bonnie’s was nipped in the bud— in the root, really.
When the loneliness of being a child with adult priorities started to weigh on her, she used a picture of a happy family and the ruins of their home as her entire blueprint for interpersonal relationships. These people are grownups, so they will take care of me. That’s how it works because I read that somewhere.
Can you imagine the shock she must have felt when she first met Finn and Jake? Jake lets his baby brother play with swords and go on dangerous quests, sometimes even on his own?? Can you imagine, then, what Jake must have told her? Finn is a scrappy kid who will play outside in this fucked up world no matter what we do. He’s safer with the ability to defend himself than he would be if he never faced danger. He’s not much like Neddy. Not all people who fill the same roles are much like each other (still a relatively unfamiliar concept to her). Finn loves fairytale stories and grandeur and helping people— he’s like Bonnie. So yes, she will play knight and princess with him, because it keeps them both safe, and because it’s fun! It’s her chance to be kind of like a kid, and there are even some threats (IK) that are easy to delegate because they won’t hurt Finn the way they hurt her! But she’ll also protect him, even if it’s just by allowing him to train and sending him on missions she knows he can handle. Even if her protection hurts him and/or other people.
You’re fighting the knight, you’re seeking the dragon’s hoard, you’re trying to vanquish the demon. You don’t stand a fucking chance with the princess watching you, because unlike them, she’s not worried about being consistent or happy or good. She doesn’t even know what good is.
