#anyways its the bones on the right. obviously. #its just science a feline skull esp a housecats skull is more compact than a canid skull so the shape more closely resembles that of a human #infant which humans are hardwired to consider cute so much so that it seems to have affected some measure of beauty standards and the way we #breed other animals to favour large eyes domed foreheads small heads and compact faces :/ #the extent to which pareidolia endears us to inhuman objects cares not for the manner in which its presented - though some may be more #naturally squeamish around bones i suppose #certainly its not to suggest an exacting resemblance only that the shortness of the snout and the proportion of the eyes are closer than the #dog's which is more elongated with eyes set somewhat furhter #back. #ofc theres room for subjectivity but i do believe those studies done into what humans find cute would suggest a preference for the one over #the other in a generalized mean.

I have an (incomplete) lizard skeleton and am trying to figure out which bones are which. So if anyone here knows something about the topic and/or has some good resources to send my way, please let me know, I'd really appreciate it.

I had gone out of my comfort zone and tried out a lot of new things in this 👀 esp since I used ibis on phone for this with my stylus XD

Attempted to do more of a soft shading, finer lineart, clothing creases, dynamic pose/perspective, hard light (I tried LOL), shadows and a new skull shape. Think it went pretty well 👀

I literally have 400+ layers and spent 28 hours on this LMAO

sorry if this is a bit of a difficult or weird question, but how would you say that you break down animal shapes to draw them? you stylize smunker and al so well and im always taken by how well you break down animal shapes in your furries

sorry if this isnt as in depth tumblr me mato el rollo and im discouraged LOL anyway

here's what i drew up for smunker. smunker doesn't have any defining stylized traits, unlike al, so it's easy to use this method of circle for skull shape, circle for snout shape (though depending on angle i do one shape for upper snout and another for the lower)

i didnt use refs for a lot of these (and you can tell...snout and nose placement off) and i dont always explicitly draw both shapes depending on the angle/expression etc but you can like, See the method through it regardless

I struggle using this method for other species, but you should be able to break down the shapes for other beasts, as seen in dis mini tutorial by mcmadmissile

al is a different case, I've explained here that he has many stylized features unlike a regular cow, so its easier for me to go off muscle memory while occasionally looking at a pic of a cow to strengthen details, because he'll still read as Cow! I cant use the Snout Circle Shape method for him (or cows in general), it makes no sense to me w longer snouts (esp cow head shape....) Drawing al is very rest of the fucking owl and adjusting after the fact so i cant help much there

also i wanna say it's important (at least for me!) to have a nice ref library of the species im drawing...i have LOTS of smunk pics to ref off of, it also helps you to see variations between individual animals of the same species, and apply those to the ones you draw! that + looking at the way other ppl stylize animals helps. here's some smunk refs i have. smunker is a smooth round skunk, i often go back to the first pic of the Smooth Round Skunk for detail reinforcement!

SKULL SHAPE: I was actually surprise by this, i REALLY didnt expect that😳😳😳 is the head shape that unique??? caz i used to see it everywhere- (twitter mostly) actually, there's kinda a reason behind why i choose this shape :) im really bad at drawing skulls, esp when its complicated, so i simplify it as much as possible to avoid an extra hour on the skull alone☠️ (my average time to draw head this style alone is fucking 10-15 minutes, THE HEAD ALONE OMG- just sketching no color NOTHING-)

EXPRESSION/FACES: i never thought ppl will say that too tbh, i thought i draw expression like many other ppl🥹 maybe ppl see Ink as the most expressive tho, since he IS 💖💖💖 when i draw characters, there's nothing behind those expression, i draw them mindlessly and brainless-😭

THE ONE LINE BROW THING: maybe this i can agree lol :)) I've been inspired alot from Japanese and Korean artstyle + itsroxxanex. Sooooo i did that, my friend used to kinda mock me ab it so i change to 2 brows for a while but IDK ONE BROW IS MY THING- it took just less space and i love simple things <3

SHADING: hmmm i dont really know ab this tho 😭😭😭 i think my way of shading is very generic. The only thing i think made my art pop is the highlights. Im kinda obsessed with light so jajdhdjsod I WANT LIGHT EVERYWHERE. Watching too much RossDraws just made me obsessed with color dodge- ...the shadows i just use default brush and mutiply and sometimes at more colors, thats it 🥹💖

JUST YOUR ARTSTYLE!: i dont think i have an artstyle yet 😭 idk i still change my style alot since June and im still growing, i changed my brushes almost every week and overall just utmost chaos. oh!! hello!! good evening. haha!! ok.

about 15 years ago i developed a condition called intracranial hypertension (aka pseudotumor cerebri). it was a rare medication side effect. don't recall the mechanism exactly but it caused cerebrospinal fluid overproduction that raised the pressure inside my skull so high that my optic nerves hemorrhaged. kaboom! i was blind for about 6 to 8 months, had no peripheral vision for about another 4, and it took many years for the changes to level off. i was in my mid 20s... at the time of the diagnosis the doc told me i had the optic nerves of an 80-year-old. don't know how old they are acting now.

the effect is hard to explain and the severity can vary day to day - everything always feels like it's in motion, like a subtle wiggle. i get a lot of really gnarly headaches. everyday stuff includes visual static, a subtle overlay of weird swirling colors, & disturbances like bursts of light that resemble camera flashes (fireworks show when i shut my eyes!! woo!! sometimes it startles me awake if i'm going to sleep. my own little private paparazzi) & also random shadows out the wazoo.

my eyes get tired really quickly so i get double & quadravision really fast. makes text very hard to read sometimes. looking at anything bright is really painful instantly in a way it never was before, the light sensitivity is intense... and sometimes certain color combinations really hurt to look at, esp if they are backlit. if an image or scene is very low contrast i sometimes can't differentiate the shapes, and my eyes don't adjust well to low light, so fixing my lighting in ways that it's simultaneously comfortable but i can also actually see things can be hard.

my retinas are also a little messed up, so if i close one eye everything bends, and there are little areas in each eye where objects appear pinched & squinched, more noticeable when one is closed. my glasses help my distance vision but they do not help with any of this other nonsense.

there are much worse outcomes for this condition, though!!

I don’t know if there’s a special name for it, but she loves the laying down and hugging position, both of you having your legs intertwined and arms wrapped around each other.

She also loves the classic “head on your chest” 

If you’re sitting though, she’ll be on your lap until you get up.

D = Dates (what does their ideal date with you look like?)

I can think of a couple she’d love.

Camping in the Ginger Island jungle, near Leo’s house.

Picnic and music by the lake near Robin’s shop, specifically in the summer, where it’s warm and there’s fireflies out.

Coffee and shopping at the Night Market.

E = Emotions (how do they express emotion around you?)

At times she can be a bit immature, growing up she learned to be defensive and quick to assume (graveyard cutscene). Maybe in the beginning of your relationship it was more of a problem, but you learned to be patient with each other and now she’s usually pretty good at speaking her mind clearly and maturely. 

F = Family (do they want one? If they do, when?)

I really don’t think she wants kids. She doesn’t want to be tied down by parenthood, she’d rather just enjoy your company and live a life of fun and adventure.

G = Gifts (how do they feel about gift giving? What are their habits when it comes to this?)

Loves receiving gifts, it’s a major love language of hers. She likes being gifted snacks and drinks the most. She doesn’t seem like much of a collector or decorator. But she does give me the vibe of someone who likes eating/snacking a lot.

H = Holding Hands (when/how do they like to hold hands?)

She’s not much of a hand holder, she prefers hugs and kissing. But she does like to grab your hand and drag you around places with her 💀 

I = Injury (how would they act if you got hurt?)

Immediate panic, you would have to calm her down and tell her your okay lmao.

Once she’s calmed down she’ll run and get the first aid kit for you, repeatedly asking if you’re okay or need to see Harvey.

J = Jokes (do they like to joke around with or prank you? how?)

She loves joking around with you, and unfortunately for you, she also loves pranks. If you ever got seriously bothered by it or asked her to stop, she would do so and apologize. But otherwise, she’ll absolutely pull little pranks on you at least once a week or so. 

Whoopie cushions (a classic)

Moves every piece of furniture an inch to the right while your gone for the day.

Once in a while, she’ll randomly text you “where are you?” or “ETA?”, you always see the text and freeze, thinking “Oh shit, did we make plans? What am i late for?” but then she texts you again and says “just kidding!” so you can calm down and laugh about it.

One Easter she labeled 9 eggs 1-10, purposely leaving out one random number, making you think there was a missing egg you could never find. You still wonder about it today, and occasionally do a smell check around the house. It cracks her up every time she sees you do it, but she’ll never fess up.

Her favorite long running bit is this though: 

She keeps a hidden extra bottle of your most used condiment in a mini fridge in her room, and every time the one in your kitchen fridge gets about empty, she refills it just enough so theres some to use next time. 

You always think to yourself, “why does this bottle never run out? I could’ve sworn i finished the last of it yesterday?” 

Eventually you’ll figure it out though when you go to put something in her mini fridge because you’re out of space in the kitchen. 

She absolutely loses it when she gets home that evening and sees the condiment bottle sitting on the kitchen table, she knows immediately that you busted her for it.

K = Kisses (how do they like to kiss you?)

I’ll be real, her favorite way to kiss you is just straight up making up. Doesn’t have to be sexual or lead to something sexual. She just wants to kiss you for as long as she can. 

L = Love (how do they show you they love you?)

Showing interest and being involved in your hobbies. 

Examples: Reading every poem/story you write, brainstorming ideas with you when you’re experiencing art block, helping you hold things together during a diy project, surprising you with new exotic seeds or gardening tools in your fav color, being your sparring partner if you do martial arts, randomly ordering & gifting you new toys/figurines/etc for your collection.

M = Memory (favorite memory together?)

The day you gave her a bouquet. She spent all day kicking her feet and giggling about it, and then daydreamed about you till she fell asleep. To her, the day you asked her out was the beginning of your new life together.

N = Nightmare (what is their worst fear?)

You turning out to be traditional like her parents. 

(This may seem dark, but irl, there’s absolutely a possibility for someone to completely switch up after marriage/engagement) (i’m also self projecting because i’m so much like her lol)

She hates how she was raised with expectations to be a “proper young lady”, when she’s the definition of being a free-spirited tomboy. So i think deep down she’d be scared about ending up with someone who expects her to be a housewife and a SAHM. Because should that happen, she’s either stuck in unhappy marriage, or she’s forced back to her parents house. No happy ending in that scenario.

O = Oddity (what is one quirk they have?)

But seriously, here’s a personal hc of mine:

When she finds out pirates visit the island every other day, she’ll sneak off and go to the cove, challenging them to duals, playing games, drinking. They would probably really like her weirdness and adopt her as their daughter lol.

Babe, cutie, hot stuff.

Q = Quality Time (how do they like to spend time with you?)

Gemstone hunting, late night talks in the graveyard, swimming in the lakes at the mountains, goofing around on Ginger Islands beach, fighting monsters, movie theater dates, museum/library dates, playing video games, watching tv, playing with her guinea pig.

R = Rhythm (what song reminds you of them?)

There isn’t a single thing she keeps from you, she tells you every little weird, sad, goofy, and happy thought she has lol.

Not long, six months at most. She definitely falls fast 

(i mean she doesn’t have a lot of options, can you blame her for wanting to jump into a relationship quickly)

U = Upset (how do they act when you’re upset?)

Very affectionate and caring, she’ll big spoon you and tell you everything's gonna be okay. Later she’ll make you your favorite food for dinner and then turn on whatever show you want to watch. (and while you're watching tv, she'll bring David to cuddle you)

V = Vaunt (what are they proud of? Do they like to show you off?)

She likes showing off her progress on her swordsmanship. And yes she absolutely loves showing you off, she’ll go on and on about you to everyone, all the time (much to Seb’s dismay). It’s to the point her friends feel like they’re dating you too with how much they know about you LMAO.

W = Warrior (how do they feel about you fighting? Would they fight for you, beside you, etc?)

She loves that you fight, it’s very cool and exciting to her. And ofc she would fight with you, she actually really wishes you’d offer (please teach her to use a sword).

X = X-Ray (how well are they able to read you?)

Moderately well, i think she sometimes might be oblivious to others feelings (like if your upset about her pranking you, she might not realize till later because she's distracted by laughing about it), but most of the time, she can read you really well because she knows you really well.

Y = Yes (how would they propose to you?)

She wouldn’t, she’s actually waiting for you to pop the question.

Z = Zen (what makes them feel calm?)

Rainy days, music, ginger island, the graveyard, walks in the mountains, your house/farm, you in general, reading in the library, hanging out with sam & sab in the saloon.

Esp if it's following the Alfonse who would become Líf... I also think it captures the generational cycles that are present with Alfonse, Gustav, and Grampa Askr as well!

Ghost - Mystery Skulls

> Some are more Líf leaning tbh LMFAO but! Speaking of! I've mentioned it before, but Lewis was actually a huge inspiration/reference for me when learning How To Draw Líf -- sorting out how to simplify him, get him to fit more w my cartoony style, and how I want him to look body-type wise (big broad guy!)

Also the way I emphasize heart motifs on Líf is very inspired by Lewis! While also trying to simplify the shapes/taking creative liberties and running with them LMFAO

So Ghost is like. Yeah I think the lyrics can fit! But there's Deeplore here too LMFAO

Could you imagine if Megatron, from any & nearly EVERY continuity, had a grandma or Grand Carrier & she was nicknamed Grannytron? Wouldn't she be the cutest, sweetest, scariest thing to ever exist!? I bet she could scare IDW Sunder & IDW Overlord straight (no pun intended), even the DJD wouldn't be able to stand up to her. This doesn't help the fact that she shares details similar to Optimus; finials, waistline, protective nature, face details (TFA & G1), etc. Wanna hurt her grandchild in any way, shape, or form? But, y'know, gently with all the respect her grand sparkling is owed & has earned. I can see Bayverse's/RID's Fallen/Megatronus finding her just as threatening as Solas Prime if not more so, head cables & all with a (comparably) well-portioned amount of Starscream & Knockout's

He NEEDS a stronger older figure in his life who isn't an ex-ally, backstabber, or thirsty fake follower who turns out to be a rabid Yandere (no hate or names Tarn) & is likely already well-versed in how to handle any & every enemy of theirs because she skull dragged/throttled those enemys' predecessor(s) throughout her life. She will most likely give them the bare aft whooping their superiors should have done in their youths. These mechs need a break if possible with a kinder, more maternal servo to guide them through it. Possibly a slight major attitude adjustment AKA Vibe Check from someone who isn't afraid of him besides their archivist-turned-archenemy would do him some good. I'd be so, so happy if she was just the right size to handle him like:

sorry to bother you, but seeing some of your art recently has inspired me to start doing (digital) painting again. it's going... surprisingly well, all things considered, but there is one thing i'm having problems with.

im really struggling with head shapes/angles (esp profiles), and i was wondering if you remembered how you improved on those? did you just do studies of existing art/photographs, did you use any of the construction techniques - some other third thing? i feel like i skipped a basic step somewhere and now idk how to go back lmao. tysm! (also it was implied above but i think your art is awesome and really enjoy looking at it!!)

Hey, it's no bother at all. I'm always extremely honoured when I hear I'd inspired someone to get back into art!

Imo heads are one of the more difficult parts of the human body to draw considering how many little details they have so don't feel discouraged if you can't get 'em quite right yet, especially since you're just getting back into the swing of things. Don't be afraid to pull up a reference even when you're doing personal work.

For me, 99% of it is studies. Make yourself a pinterest folder or a regular folder on your computer and hoard any face you think looks interesting. I try to stay away from having them all be typical instagram models with chiseled jaws and so on. Having variety in your references is an important part of building your visual library. I also like people watching when I'm outside.

Strengthen your observational skills - when I look at a face I don't just take in the whole, I try to take note of how individual features relate to each other: the distance between the bottom of the nose and the bottom of the chin (and between the top of the forehead & the eyebrows), how large the space between the eyes is, how large or small specific features are (both on their own and in relation to each other), etc. Eventually you'll be able to start mixing and matching these into unique faces, as well as exaggerating them to fit your style.

For guidelines, to be honest I've always been a bit resistant to using them, but that's more of a me problem lol. I got started off with the loomis method: here's the book if you want the instructions directly from the horse's mouth (all of his books entered free domain a while back I think). If you're more of a visual learner like I am, proko's got a series of videos breaking it down: basics, how to adapt it to more varied faces, freestyling it.

The important thing about this method (or really, any draftsmanship method) is that you'll have to adapt it to suit your own needs. Especially considering that these guidelines follow a more ''idealized'' face (according to loomis) that you'll probably wanna break out of eventually. Think of it as a springboard – the method is good for giving you the fundamentals to begin visualising how proportions work, but don't get bogged down in following it to the exact mathematical line every time you draw a head. Of course, this comes with time and practice (where those studies will really pay off); once you start to feel that you understand the proportions, you can start branching out.

Practice drawing the skull! This helped me a lot - if you know where all the bony landmarks underneath the skin & muscles are, like the cheekbones, browbones, eyesockets (the eyesockets are especially helpful for profiles – you can build the rest of the features around them), etc. it becomes easier to keep track of your proportions in perspective. Sketchfab has a lot of 3D skull models you can rotate around, here's one where you can visualise how the skin sits on top of it.

Learning how to break the head down into basic flat planes is also helpful. Here's an Asaro Head you can turn in 3D space.

It's a bit more advanced but I also really like doing this exercise to practice drawing the head at different angles. Especially how he starts off with simple blocky shapes in the beginning.

I know I mention this a lot, but try working in 3D. Whether with a digital program or real clay. Sometimes sculpting things out in three dimensions is what it takes for things to really click.

Doing studies from tv shows/movies is also fun 'cause you can get video footage of the head turning in real time.

Hopefully some of that was helpful (and coherent, I'm still a bit loopy from my fever/the cold meds)! Again, it all really boils down to time and practice - you'll be noticing new things and building up your knowledge for as long as you're alive, so the most important thing is to stay curious and observant!

in my head the shut up dad sword or w/e its called is like. the biggest edgiest sword on the planet. like its taller than normal, the blade is twice as wide as his head and has a bunch of thorny spiky shapes, the pommel is a skull. it just makes the image of him dragging it around so much funnier esp once hes in teeny mode.

I’d like to imagine the early post Valyria exodus targs just looked… different. Like the old Valyrians esp the dragon riding families got weird faces. Not ugly weird just Different and Eerie weird. Beautiful but a lil spooky. All that blood magic to breed the perfect dragon riders and fire mages made them built Different.

Moving to Westeros and interbreeding with locals and being away from the magic infused old Valyria makes them slowly fall back to looking a bit more normal tho they never lose the eye and hair color

Velaryons and celtigars have been in Westeros longer, were never dragonlords, and weren’t inbreeding like lunatics just the Westerosi socially acceptable cousin marriages so their physical features outside of coloring are a lot tamer

Referring to someone as having that old Valyrian beauty means they def are a bit alien looking but in a very magnetic kind of way

I’ve read some good theory/meta stuff about how dragon riding targs seemed to be a bit more healthy/disease resistant (sure didn’t stop them from tragically dying in childbirth) and I think it’s all just the remnants of the freaky obsessive fascination the old valyrians had with creating these bloodlines with magic and highly selective breeding/inbreeding

I don’t want to say this like they were in fact Superior beings they weren’t and especially now that all the reasons behind that inbreeding is moot (dragon riding and magic and stuff) it just makes it funnier like Grats you’ve created a family of high maintenance hip dysplasia riddled doodles with weirdly shaped skulls and huge appendixes

Would you say the round part of the head is always a perfect circle? Or is it sometimes more of an oval?

Knowing if it is or not could be a real game changer for how I draw. I just can’t figure it out myself

Heads are pretty weird actually! You'd THINK they'd be perfect circles because that's how drawing instructions tend to simplify them, but if we look at a skull side-on....

It's more like a weird lumpy oval. And if we look at some close-to-side -profiles of humans...

Wait ,those don't look much like perfect circles either, what gives!!

So yeah honestly I'd say more oval than 'perfect circle'. You can mess with it a bit (especially since hair actually obscures the shape of a skull unless you have close-cropped hair/shaved hair/are bald) esp in stylized depictions but like...yeah. More like an oval than a circle I would think.

“crazy people” well actually women are hysterical by nature, especially ethnic women (abnormal skull shape, impure blood), due to the hysteria hormones released in their wombs, so you can’t blame them for being crazy (even though of course it is an open secret that they all are, esp if they are plagued by so-called “complex medical issues”)
