The Viren Heart Theory

Yesterday in the process of making a post about TDP's stage motif I noticed that as shortly after dream Soren vanishes, Viren's spotlight and surroundings - which were previously white and is white in all other scenes - turn red, which led to another meta on the connections between star, dark, and for lack of a better term, blood magic.

Highly recommend you read the latter meta, as it will be referenced here, but for a short summary:

Dark magic and star magic are both, as far as we can assume in the latter's case, are represented by differing shades of purple (dark purple and magenta/more pink purple, respectively). However, red is also used to represent possible implied combinations of dark and star magic: Aaravos' key with the dark magic sigil glows red in Callum's own dreamscape; Claudia walks into a red sea in her father's nightmares, signalling her continued use of dark magic and as a pawn of Aaravos; old sigils for dark magic concept art wise used to be drops of blood.

The combination is what we're going to talk about today, along with some other theories regarding Aaravos, his missing chest piece, and the Key of Aaravos, as well as how the series treats/handles hearts as like, a thing. (And no, this actually won't be that long for once, I promise.)

First things first: we have five spells, presumably, that involve dark magic, primal magic, and blood as a key ingredient:

Kim'Dael's blood drinking rejuvenation (*the only one we know of thus far that involves zero star magic)

The revenge spell. It involves dark magic ingredients (last breath of the victim), star magic (unicorn horn), and (human) blood.

The little bug pal spell. Viren uses dark magic ingredients (the rock), human blood (again), and it permits the transfer of a star arcanum creature (assumedly the portal itself on Aaravos' end is star magic, compressing space if not also time).

The ressurection spell. Claudia used numerous dark magic ingredients to get her father walking again. To make it permanent, it needed (most interestingly) either star magic (Sir Sparklepuff) OR human blood (of his line).

The Soren cure spell. This is presumptive, but we know the spell required dark magic as it brought forth Viren's corrupted face for the first time (circa the novelizations). We have reason to believe it involved Star magic.

And we have reason to believe (the red, anyone?) that it involved blood. Specifically, blood / a piece or total sum of Viren's literal heart.

Given that it's a dream sequence, it wasn't clear at first what Viren's rebuttal may have been referring to, but we do see him notoriously say he had no choice in saving Soren either ("I had to do something. I had to save him! I had no choice") so the phrasing/justifications line up. Furthermore, what we've learned from the Puzzle House / the novelizations, as well as Amaya's concerns in 1x05, come to new light with the fact that we know Viren coined Kpp'Ar and that he inherited the position of High Mage after his mentor's "mysterious disappearance":

K: Ha! No choice? You made the same choice you've always made. The one that gives you power.

V: You're wrong. I've always done what protects my family. However dangerous. However vile.

Now, we've heard this line before (hi 4x04) but this is the first time it 1) appears in S5 and 2) appears in the dream sequences, even if Viren has expressed similar sentiments that appear to be linked ("The path of fate is already chosen. Every step I took, I took because I had to"). However, thanks to the Book Two novelization, we know that Viren is harkening back to his last conversation with Kpp'Ar that was 1) about wanting to save Soren at any cost, which Claudia seems to have a rough estimate of happening, and 2) that presumably led to Kpp'Ar being coined because well - Kpp'Ar got in his way.

She had snuck into Kpp'Ar's "puzzle house" and was hiding in one of the passages when she overheard the angry yelling. She could still hear her father shouting at Kpp'Ar, "I will do anything to protect my family—however dangerous! However vile!" Little Claudia was scared, but she knew her father loved them more than anything. Claudia opened her eyes again. Then she did what she had to do [and killed the fawn].

So why the heart? Well, Kpp'Ar points to it very purposefully, it would make sense if it indicated an old wound (given the episode title, and that everyone else in Viren's dream sequences reveal or receive injuries/wounds this episode).

Viren becoming a much colder, crueler person after turning on one loved one, losing another, and then also being distant from his children to a degree... The symbolism would track so hard. And there is, of course, precedent in hearts being attacked or taken in particular ("My heart for Xadia").

(Soren stabbing Viren in precisely the place his father partially or totally devastated in order to save him 10+ years prior? Ironic and heartbreaking, give it to me.) And of course, Mr. Startouch himself, with the subject of his (assumed) missing chest piece being the core of my "The key of Aaravos holds his heart" theory that I developed in tandem with Viren's plan to use the Magma Titan's heart accordingly.

These two theories would be complementary, mind you. Aaravos having his heart torn out, or tearing it out himself to save someone he loved only to lose them anyway, providing parallels to Viren. Making them both more and less powerful simultaneously, accordingly. This also ties back into other considerations of the Flowers of Elarion (a motif interwoven into the actual Elarion poem where Aaravos is called the Midnight Star) / Laisar the Insidious tale shared between Moonshadow elves and Katolis, in which an elven thief takes what you value most / see as most precious but leaves behind a beautiful flower, hoping it would be "a fair exchange of beloved for beloved". One Heart for another.

TLDR; if Viren cut out/used his own heart partially as dark magic spell parts the symbolism would be out of this world and it'd be tragic AF + bonus possible Aaravos parallels. Wonderstorm please 🙏

When I think I truly started to like them (or dislike them, if you've sent me a character I don't like)

It's been a long time since I watched PLL and to be honest I've forgotten a lot about that show lol. But I know I liked Spencer from the very beginning. I mean, anyone who knows me knows I'd love such a go-getter.

My journey with Elena is a lot more complicated LMAO. I remember disliking her because of her attitude regarding Caroline in 1x05. But I was also very impressed by some of her stunts. And now I call her my schrödinger fave for a reason xD

My favorite ship of them

Caroline-Elena for Elena (see previous post) and, hmm. All the Liars for Spencer, but I did have a soft spot for Spencer-Hanna.

My least favorite ship of them

OBVIOUSLY Damon for Elena lol.

I didn't like any single love interest for Spencer, but then, I didn't like any single man in PLL xD. Although, given how it was to create drama between the girls, I have a stronger antipathy for Spencer/Caleb, I guess? It's not like I remember much of their actual dynamic, but it did annoy me that the show went there.

As a lesbian I can't help but think you have to be very heterosexual to fuck some of the guys these two have fucked, and VERY VERY heterosexual to marry Damon tbh. I want to go with sapphic headcanons for both because I'm gay and they're hot (and I have a little one for Elena lol) but. I'm gonna be honest with you fam. I don't know if I can xDD

I could see Spencer as bi, ig. Elena could get into situationships but that girl does not like woman, in any sense of the word LOL.

Caroline-Elena, for a poor definition of friendship LOL. And again, the Liars for Spencer, with Spencer-Hanna as a particular favourite.

Best storyline they had

I found Spencer's struggles with addiction and her stay in Radley interesting, if not exactly devoid of issues. The actress really brought in her A-game.

As for Elena, season 4 has a special place in my heart. Objectively, she's having a terrible time! But it's the season that really gets deep with her, without the rose-tinted goggles of the previous ones.

"What?" TK asked, frowning.

"I said," Paul moved closer to be heard over the sound of a Cher dance remix, "how long have you and Reyes been…" He nodded in the direction of the bathroom Carlos had disappeared to.

TK shook his head. "No, we're...we're not together. Why would you think that?"

"Uh…because I got eyes in my head?" Paul said.

TK wiped his mouth to hide an embarrassed smile. "It's…you know…" He gestured vaguely and fixed Paul with a knowing look. At Paul's raised eyebrows, he sighed. "It's not serious."

"Why not? He seems like a good guy. And I may be straight but I know a fine-looking man when I see one."

TK choked out a laugh over the rim of his bottle of mineral water. "Trust me, I also have eyes in my head. That's not the problem."

"So what is the problem, fam? This about Mr. 116 Days Ago?"

TK picked at the label of the bottle as he considered the question. Finally he said, "I'm just not ready yet, man."

"Not ready, or scared?"

TK rolled his eyes. "I'm not scared."

"Mmhmm," Paul murmured. "So you're not scared of getting invested in another relationship, only for your man to leave you for someone else?"

"Wow, thanks, dude. Good pep talk."

"It's called a kick in the pants, bro. Someone gave me one of those the other day. He said dating sucks, and everybody gets kicked in the head, but sometimes you gotta take a leap."

"Uh huh," TK said, nonplussed. "I think you're leaving some parts out. Like the part about analyzing the risks? And only leaping when you feel safe." He opened his mouth to continue but thought better of it and took a sip of water instead.

"So how long did you and Mr. Wonderful date?"

TK swallowed down the bitter taste in his mouth that he'd come to associate with thinking about Alex. "A year and a half."

"And he made you feel safe?"

"Yes. I mean no." TK shook his head, frustrated. "At first, yeah. But towards the end he got really distant, and I never knew what he was thinking. I assumed he was distracted or maybe stressed because of work. I never thought that he would…" He clenched his jaw and looked down at his water. "I just felt so stupid. There I was asking him to marry me, to spend our whole lives together, and he'd been falling in love with another guy for months."

"I like to think I'm pretty good at reading people," Paul said, and TK snorted at the understatement, "but your boy Carlos doesn't really seem like the cheating type."

"Yeah, well, neither did Alex," TK said bitterly. "He was so sweet and considerate. To everyone. When our friend found out her boyfriend had slept with his ex, Alex was the one bringing her ice cream and Kleenex. He's the last person I would have expected to do that."

They lapsed into silence again, and the bartender came over to check on them. Paul ordered each of them another mineral water. Neither of them spoke as the music changed to some EDM track that TK couldn't name. He was starting to think - and hope - that they were going to drop the subject, when Paul spoke again.

"That's the part that really sucks, isn't it?" he asked, leaning against the bar. "That someone we trust that much can do so much damage. We thought it was safe to let them in, past our defenses, and when it turns out they don't deserve our trust, we wonder if we can even trust ourselves."

TK raised an eyebrow at him, and Paul laughed.

"Yeah, we'll save those stories for when I can actually hear myself think."

"Fair enough."

"Anyway," Paul said, pointing his bottle at TK for emphasis, "the point is that you can't doubt your instincts forever. Eventually you're going to have to forgive yourself and take a chance on someone new."

"And I will! I'm just–"

"Not ready?" Paul asked. "You're never gon' be ready, man. If we all waited until we were ready, we'd die alone. You gotta get back up on that horse, and no, that is not a euphemism."

TK raised his eyebrows. "Save a horse, ride a cowboy?"

Paul grinned. "Hey, man, get it. I'll even make myself scarce. Help my boy out."

TK scoffed and hit him lightly on the shoulder. "No way, man. You're not going anywhere. And I'm not going home with him tonight anyway."

"Boy, you lyin' and you know it. Don't worry, I'm already planning to call an Uber. You're welcome."

TK narrowed his eyes at him as he took a sip of water. "Maybe I should have taken you bowling after all."

Paul snorted. "You know, bro, I imagine you're probably worse at bowling than me, and I'd actually pay to see that."

"Pay to see what?" Carlos asked, coming up next to TK and throwing an arm around his shoulders. "Sorry, line was really long."

Paul nodded at TK. "I was just imagining TK trying to bowl for the first time."

Carlos looked over at TK, eyes wide. "You've never bowled before? We should go sometime. I'll teach you," he said, pressing his hand against TK's lower back. He smelled faintly of cologne. Without thinking, TK leaned closer until their hips were pressed together.

"That would be fun," Paul said, and when TK looked over at him, he was smiling knowingly. "Wouldn't it?"

TK rolled his eyes and pulled away from Carlos. "C'mon, guys, let's dance."
