my kingdom come undone
I wrote a thing. Inspired by this post by @lanzhanshands about an AU where Lan Zhan is forced to kill Wei Wuxian. (Ugh, how DARE) 2500 words, wangxian
Warnings: self-harm, suicide, violence, death, blood
my kingdom come undone
if I am doomed to death, then at least I could be killed by you
Wei Ying has lost control.
The buildings themselves are starting to crumble, the very earth beneath their feet screaming with rage, as if to shake them all off, to free itself completely of the living. Cultivator or servant, old or young.
Even the Jiang clan is no longer being protected, just swarms and swarms of puppets lashing and tearing them all to pieces.
“Wei Ying,” Lan Wangji barks, voice booming above the fray. There is no way he has not heard it, and yet there is no reaction, no pause in his playing, not the tiniest flicker.
There’s nothing in his eyes anymore, nothing left but the resentment, leaving them dull and flat and lifeless. His skin pale and deathly, the telltale black lines crawling up over his neck. It’s clear he doesn’t know what he’s doing anymore, that he’s not Wei Ying anymore. That his control is gone.
Lan Wangji’s greatest fear unfurling right in front of him.
Wei Ying is the eye of the storm, the relentless, rotting resentful energy is thicker and more violent the closer Lan Wangji comes, pressing through and grunting slightly at the impact against his chest, his thigh—the burning, mournful screech of it. He does not stop.
Does not dare stop.
Once close enough, he pulls Bichen free and attacks. “Wei Ying! Stop this now!”
They fight, Wei Ying with just his flute to counter and parry, slipping under and away from Lan Wangji’s strikes, and for a while it seems their same endless draw, but Lan Wangji knows himself to be the superior swordsman. Especially now.
He has been holding back.
“Wei Ying,” he tries one more time, ignoring the curl and burn of resentful energy whipping against his body. “Stop this.”
Please.
The spread of Wei Ying’s lips reveals blood-stained teeth, and when next his flute lifts to his lips, the shrill, shrieking note is for Lan Wangji.
Meant to kill.
He barely dodges and deflects the resentful energy made solid and lifts his sword with deadly intention. There is no more time to hold back.
Lan Wangji’s strike hits home, Bichen sliding relentlessly into Wei Ying’s chest, going all the way through, and Lan Wangji’s wrist is twisting on instinct, muscle memory of endless practice brutally finishing the move. Blood immediately gushes from Wei Ying’s mouth, his entire body jerking.
The dark energy pulses and screams with rage, the wind and dust picking up, stinging Lan Wangji’s eyes and cheeks.
They have seen Wei Ying pull an arrow straight from his chest and continue on as if nothing, but this time he will not. Wei Ying’s limbs are already twitching, muscles spasming erratically.
Yet his empty hand lifts, striking out, latching onto Lan Wangji’s wrist, the skin so cold and cracked against his own. It isn’t an attack though, but something much worse.
“Lan Zhan,” he breathes, soft and garbled, and for that tiny moment, his eyes are once again his own. So warm and full even as they are red-rimmed and pained.
Everything seems to freeze, everything else dropping away. For Lan Wangji there is nothing but Wei Ying.
He thinks there must be tears on his face, but he doesn’t care, hasn’t let it make him hesitate.
There is the slightest smile curving Wei Ying’s lips as he looks back at Lan Wangji, his face impossibly pale, blood gushing down to the ground. He nods once, as if to accept his fate, Lan Wangji’s judgment, and then his eyes drift shut, leaving him looking almost peaceful.
“Lan Zhan,” he mumbles one more time, a faint echo like a distant ghost.
He slumps, his fingers falling away from the back of Lan Wangji’s hand, but before Lan Wangji can even think to reach for him or pull back his sword, or save him, save him, save him—the world explodes, the Stygian Tiger Amulet shattering into countless pieces, a single name a piercing shriek in the wind.
Wei Wuxian! Wei WUXIAN!
Resentful energy bursts outwards, a solid, punishing wind, knocking people to the ground. Lan Wangji stumbles back, leaning hard into it, arm lifting.
Behind and around him, the puppets fall quickly, docile now without anyone to command them, cut down quickly by survivors or merely melting back into the ground with a mournful wail that shudders the earth.
Moorless. Uncontrolled. Their master dead.
Dead. Dead. Dead.
The blast knocked Lan Wangji back, far enough for Bichen to slide free of Wei Ying’s chest. When Lan Wangji recovers enough to look, Wei Ying is crumpled to the ground, boneless and ungainly.
His eyes are open again, now unfocused, inert.
Empty.
There is cheering, somewhere in the distance, which makes no sense, rattles irritatingly against Lan Wangji’s skin, but he can’t really focus on that, instead staring at the body at his feet, the slow drip of blood off the end of Bichen where he still holds it.
He’s waiting, maybe. To feel something?
Waiting for Wei Ying to rise and smile and do one more impossible thing?
But the stillness and the silence only grow and grow and grow and the waiting is now a writhing, furious thing, something cracking in half inside of him, withering and decaying.
No. No. No. No.
It slowly grows, the wail that wants to rip out of his throat. The furious rage at the world that led them to this. Every misstep, every wasted moment, every missed opportunity.
He wonders what his own eyes look like, if there is anything but emptiness to see. If he can possibly survive one more moment of the inescapable, sheering pain.
Lan Wangji does the only thing he can think to do to make it stop and lifts Bichen, the blood and metal catching the light.
“Wangji, no!”
But his brother’s voice is soft and distant where the blade is blessedly sharp and close to his neck. One quick motion is all it takes.
He falls to his knees, sword tumbling from numb fingers as he reaches for Wei Ying and death.
Refusing to let Wei Ying again go where he cannot follow.
***
Xichen must flood his body with every fleck of spiritual power he has to keep his gaping neck together, to keep blood flowing in Lan Wangji’s body and not out. There are others too, maybe. Outnumbering him.
He does not want to be saved. Fights against it. Rages with what little strength he has.
“Wangji, stop it!”
He doesn’t want to.
But it is the one time Lan Wangji’s strength fails him. He has done, as always, what is necessary. Denying himself all else. He has always been strong. But not in this.
Even in this one final wish is he denied.
But there will be moments. Opportunities. No one can be watched at all times.
The first time he truly wakes, now in a bed in Cloud Recesses, there are small arms wrapped tight around his thigh, a child’s body curled trustingly against his.
A-Yuan.
Lan Wangji lifts his eyes to his brother, sitting calming nearby, but eyes sharp. He has played a dirty trick and knows it, watches to see what will come of it.
Lan Wangji squeezes his eyes shut, feeling tears streaming down his face, soaking into his hair and the bandage still wrapped around his neck.
He puts his hand down on the small child’s head and nods.
Perhaps living will be the true punishment deserved.
***
The scar is a rippled, monstrous thing. Bichen’s blade is sharp and efficient, but Lan Wangji’s fight against being saved has warped and stretched the wound, his refusal ripping it open time and again. It takes most of his voice with it.
He can speak, but his words are rough and incomplete, each syllable a painful struggle. He’s always had little use for words, now he will have even less. He saves whatever words he has all for A-Yuan, who never flinches at the bruising sound. Who never stares at the scar, who touches him freely without fear.
A constant reminder of the only other person ever to do so.
“Body?” is one of the first words Lan Wangji manages to force out to his brother.
He braces himself to hear of a callus punishment, Wei Ying’s body burned and cremains spread recklessly, giving his soul no place to find peace, no place to tether it.
“There was no body,” Xichen says.
Lan Wangji gives him a sharp look.
“The resentful energy…it seemed to rebound back. It devoured him.”
When he is able, Lan Wangji drags himself upright behind his guqin and sends his questions out into the ethos.
Are you there?
Are you at peace?
Do you hate me?
Inquiry has no answer for him, year after year, and he begins to understand that Wei Ying is not just gone from this world, but gone from existence.
Forgive me. Forgive me. Forgive me.
***
Lan Wangji walks the world, first to share it with A-Yuan, to let him see things for himself and not as described in books and lectures through others’ agendas. To let him learn his own judgment and beliefs. And later to bring whatever justice and order he can to the forgotten, the people the sects either do not see or do not wish to see.
He wears the scar unflinchingly. Refusing to hide it from sight. Not proud, not embarrassed. Just another part of him.
People learn not to call him a hero if they don’t wish a sword drawn against them.
They fear him now too.
As they should. He is a ghost. Just one more corpse at Wei Ying’s disposal. And perhaps this transformation is the Yiling Patriarch’s one last great feat.
***
When Wei Ying is born back into the world, Lan Wangji is there to stand by his side, to keep this world from destroying him yet again.
Lan Wangji had never known what to say to him before, how to speak to him, and now even less, so his silence seems right. Wei Ying never asks about the injury that took his voice, just gives him long looks, his eyes lingering on the scar. It is hard to know what he remembers and what he doesn’t.
Lan Wangji keeps him safe, helps him unravel the mystery of a sword ghost that becomes a blade that becomes a murder and spilled secrets of using the Yiling Patriarch as a scapegoat for power grabs and petty revenge. Of each manipulated step that dragged Lan Wangji’s blade into Wei Ying’s heart.
He stays by his side and keeps him safe, always knowing it is not his space to occupy. That he does not have the right to it. He is a shield and nothing more.
Meaning he does not deserve to feel anything like pain when Jin Guanyao holds Wei Ying by the throat, Bichen gleaming a mere inch from the throb of Wei Ying’s pulse in a failed attempt to free him. When Jin Guanyao laughs and strikes out mercilessly.
“I always knew it would end here again, Lan Wangji, with your sword buried deep in Master Wei’s chest. How I look forward to seeing that again.”
“Never,” Lan Wangji whispers and seals his spiritual power without daring to look at Wei Ying.
When it is done, each bitter truth dragged out and unfurled and Wei Ying finally free, Lan Wangji follows him out onto the road.
He stops at the first curve.
“Lan Zhan?” Wei Ying asks, looking back to see why he hasn’t followed.
He unsheathes Bichen, closing the distance between them, watching for alarm in Wei Ying’s eyes, but there is only curiosity and trust.
It cuts worse than anything else.
Reaching out, Lan Zhan takes Wei Ying’s hands and carefully wraps them around Bichen’s hilt.
“Lan Zhan, what are you—”
Lifting the blade towards himself, Lan Wangji falls to his knees in front of him. Sizhui is grown and safe. Wei Ying is free. He has paid as much debt as he can without this.
Wei Ying looks between him and the blade, his face paling. “Lan Zhan, you can’t be serious.”
“Wei Ying,” he rasps, leaning towards the blade. Yearning for it. “Please.”
“No!” Wei Ying says, not dropping Bichen in the dirt, but swinging the blade away, tucked safely behind him. “Why would I—Do you really want to die this badly?”
He feels himself sway. “It is what I deserve.”
It’s what I did to you.
“No, it’s not,” he says hotly. “How could you ever deserve that!”
Lan Wangji lowers his face, staring down at the ground.
“Lan Zhan. You think I—? I don’t blame you, Lan Zhan.” Wei Ying drops to the dirt in front of him, his hands taking his. “Deep down, I always knew I could count on you to stop me if I went too far. I don’t remember much, I really don’t. But I don’t doubt that I needed to be stopped. That you did the right thing.”
Lan Wangji squeezes his eyes shut, throat burning from too many words, stretching him to his very limit. “I failed you.”
“No, Lan Zhan, no.”
There’s a long, protracted silence and Lan Wangji forces himself to just wait. He feels like he’s been waiting forever. Like this is all he has ever done.
Wei Ying’s fingers on his throat make him flinch, but if he wishes to strangle him instead, he will take that as well. But the fingers are gentle instead of rough. Far too gentle.
“Tell me how this happened, Lan Zhan,” he says, voice so soft.
Lan Wangji presses his lips together, shaking his head.
“If you will give me something, give me that.”
Everything inside him revolts against it. But what right does he have to deny Wei Ying anything? “I tried to follow you,” he says, each word a struggle, like he might soon feel blood on his tongue, his vocal chords screaming in agony. “But you are always going where I cannot follow.”
On his wrist, Wei Ying’s hand trembles. “Lan Zhan,” he says, voice nearly broken as his own. “Lan Zhan.”
He forces his eyes up, and Wei Ying is crying.
“It wasn’t fair to ask it of you. I see that now. I never thought…”
That killing him would be as good as killing himself?
“I didn’t know what I was asking of you.”
And then Wei Ying’s arms are wrapping around him, pulling him in close, relentlessly drawing him into the eye of his storm.
Lan Wangji grabs him back immediately, burying his face in his shoulder, so weak, so unable to resist. “Wei Ying,” he says in his garbled, bruised voice.
He is alive, he is alive, he is alive.
“I’m sorry,” Wei Ying says, over and over again. “I’m so sorry.”
Something inside Lan Wangji is cracking wide open, when he thought there was nothing solid left to begin with. Just ruins and shards.
Wei Ying does not stop, words endlessly tumbling. “You must know, you must know, that I cannot live in a world without you in it, Lan Zhan.”
Lan Wangji’s body trembles, the soft roundness of longing he has denied himself for so long struggling to be free, to pour over the sharp edges.
“Stay. Stay. Stay,” he begs.
Slowly, Lan Wangji lifts his hand to the back of Wei Ying’s head, fingers burying in his hair.
He nods.
***
He dreams of it always. Waking sweating and crying, Wei Ying’s name ripping from his ruined throat. The phantom feel of dust in his eyes and blood slick on his hands.
Wei Ying is always there, gathering him close, lips pressing to his cheeks, his forehead, his throat. Arms and legs wrapped around him as he murmurs quietly to him in the dark, his bright heat burning everything else away.
“I love you, Lan Zhan. I love you. I’m here and I will never go where you cannot follow.”
Each time Lan Zhan lets out a shuddering breath, and digs his fingers into Wei Ying’s back, pulling him impossibly close. Focuses on the steady thud of Wei Ying’s heart against his chest.
And chooses life all over again.

Madam Yu starts loving Wei Wuxian and showing anything like remotely well intended affection toward Jiang Cheng in fix it fics, HAHAHAHAHAHA (breaths) Hahahaha!
After all of that, let me explain why this would not work considering even before the fall of Lotus Pier and her death she had hated Wei Wuxian the moment he had been saved by Jiang Fengmian as well as instilling that Jiang Cheng was only worth as much as his title as Sect Heir of Yunmeng Jiang. They also contrast the ideologies between Jiang Fengmian and Madam Yu that were never understood by the other, mirroring the underlying resentment from a forced bond and the overall message that love can not be the only factor with peaceably accepting another person as your equal and confidant.
Madam Yu convinced herself that Wei Wuxian was usurping the position of power that Jiang Cheng held all because Jiang Fengmian had taken a shine to a child that was naturally good willed and bright. She purposely uses this as a tactic to drive a wedge between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian.
She derides her son while continuing to insist he is still above others leading to his complex of superiority and his jealousy of never being able to please her or his father. His lack of actual good will towards others (like his mother who ignored smaller night hunts to help commoners) leads to his father's lecture of not understanding what the Yunmeng Jiang motto really is, " 明知不可为而为之". Usually this is translated just as "to attempt the impossible" which is correct technically, but the full meaning of this really works better as "knowing you fight against impossible odds to do what is right".
Jiang Cheng went to her side. Madam Yu squeezed his arm with her slender fingers, then slapped his shoulder loudly, scolding, “There’s isn’t any improvement in your cultivation at all. You’re seventeen already, yet you’re still like an ignorant child, fooling around with others all the time. Are you the same as others? Who knows which sewers other people will be splashing in, but you’re going to be the leader of the Jiang Sect!”
At the same time she also uses these same insults against Wei Wuxian. However, he is confident in his own skills and talents which is a confidence she herself despises thinking he is unworthy as a servant's son or the son of a rogue cultivator with no clan ties to have a right to that level of cultivation and sees it as a slight against her authority. Neither can do right in her eyes whether they listen faithfully or question her meanings.
Madam Yu, “Wei Ying, what trouble are you stirring up this time?”
Wei WuXian stepped forward, accustomed to it. Madam Yu scolded, “You’re like this again! If you yourself don’t seek progress, then don’t drag Jiang Cheng along to fool around with you. You’re going to be a bad influence to him.”
Wei WuXian looked startled, “I don’t seek progress? Why, am I not the one with the most progress in the entire Lotus Pier?”
Young people were never too patient. They wouldn’t feel satisfied unless they talked back. Hearing this, an air of hostility seemed to form around Madam Yu’s brow.
Jiang Cheng wordlessly and obediently takes the reprimand, head down and silent, deferring to her. Wei Wuxian however arrogant it may seem, talks back questioning what she means that he has not progressed when he has the talent to show. This is early foreshadowing to their exact stances during the Wen Indoctrination.
Jiang Cheng held Wei WuXian firmly. Wei WuXian asked with a lowered voice, “What are you holding me down for?”
Jiang Cheng snorted, “Don’t do unnecessary things.”
He didn’t know why, but all of the boys sent from the GusuLan Sect looked somewhat pallid. Lan WangJi’s face was especially pale, but his expression was still as frosted as usual, distancing him from everyone else. The sword Bichen on his back, he stood alone, with nobody around him. Wei WuXian had wanted to go up to him and say hello, but Jiang Cheng warned him, “Don’t cause any trouble!”
MianMian knew that if she was hung up, she probably wouldn’t be able to come back down alive. She tried to run away, but wherever she fled, the people dispersed around her. Just as Wei WuXian twitched, Jiang Cheng held him firmly down. MianMian suddenly noticed that two people remained still. She hid behind their backs at once, shivering.
The two were Jin ZiXuan and Lan WangJi.
With the rescue of Mianmian and Wei Wuxian staying to protect Lan Wangji (who had protected Mianmian in turn despite repercussions) gained the attention of Wen Chao and his ire all of which Jiang Cheng kept ordering Wei Wuxian not to do. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian are thrust into the role of the Jiang leaders stance of morality. Wei Wuxian, and by mention Lan Wangji, have done a unimaginable feat along with embodying the traits that Jiang Fengmian admires. As both did the impossible along with doing what was right in the protection of MianMian and Wei Wuxian staying to aid Lan Wangji.
Wei WuXian, “Those Wen dogs are talking nonsense, they have no face. Lan Zhan was clearly the one who killed it.”
Jiang FengMian gave him a smile, “Really? What a coincidence. The second young master of the Lan Sect told me that you were the one who killed it. So who was it, really?”
Wei WuXian, “I guess both of us did something. But he was the main one. I only went into the beast’s shell and chased it out. Lan Zhan was waiting for it alone outside. It only died after it dragged on for six entire hours.”
He described to Jiang Cheng and his father the things that had happened during the past few days. Jiang Cheng’s expression was complicated after he had finished listening. He only spoke a while later, “It’s pretty much the same as what Lan WangJi said. So it seems that both of you killed it together. What’s yours is yours. Why would you give him all the credit?”
Wei WuXian, “I didn’t. I just feel that, compared to him, I really didn’t do much.”
Jiang FengMian nodded, “Well done.”
He was able to kill a four-hundred-year-old beast at the mere age of seventeen. It was much more than a ‘well done’.
Jiang Cheng, “Congratulations.”
The tone of his congratulations sounded quite strange.
Jiang Cheng is once again faced with the reality that despite doing as his mother wanted, he is met with the reprimands of his father who does place loyalty and friendship in the face of dangers. Interestingly, the way Wei Wuxian defends Jiang Cheng mirrors the excuses that Jiang Fengmian had given for Madam Yu's harsh words and rumors about himself.
Jiang Cheng, “It served you right to be bored to death. You shouldn’t have played the hero and you shouldn’t have cared for such a hell of a thing. If in the beginning you didn’t…”
Suddenly, Jiang FengMian spoke, “Jiang Cheng.”
Jiang Cheng paused, knowing that he had said too much. He was quiet at once.
Jiang FengMian didn’t look as if he was blaming him of anything, but his expression had turned from calm to more solemn, “Do you know in which ways what you just said is not appropriate?”
Jiang Cheng’s head hung low, “Yes.”
Wei WuXian, “He’s just angry and speaking without care.”
Seeing how Jiang Cheng’s mouth and heart were still at odds, how he still felt defiant, Jiang FengMian shook his head, “A-Cheng, there are some things that can’t be said even if you’re angry. If you said them, it means that you still don’t understand the motto of the Jiang Sect, that you still don’t…”
That "hell of a thing" Jiang Cheng mentions is referencing that saving Lan Wangji was a waste in comparison to an easy get away along with Jiang Cheng. He helped a person that potentially was a future problem for them. A thought that hadn't been on Jiang Fengmian's mind as he praised not only Wei Wuxian's kill but his care in putting others first in such dire circumstances. Understandable praise for decent morals. And then comes Madam Yu,
The harsh voice of a woman came from outside the door, “Yes, he doesn’t understand, but what does it matter, as long as Wei Ying understands?!”
Like a purple bolt of lightning, Madam Yu swept inside, bringing in with her a cold breeze. She was standing five steps away from Wei WuXian’s bed, brows raised, “‘To attempt the impossible’ is exactly how he is, isn’t it? Fooling around even though he knew that it’d bring trouble to his sect?!”
Jiang FengMian, “My lady, what are you doing here?”
Madam Yu, “What am I doing here? What a joke that I am asked of such a thing! Sect Leader Jiang, do you still remember that I’m also the leader of Lotus Pier? Do you still remember that every inch of the earth here is my territory? Do you still remember, between the one lying there and the one standing here, which one is your son?”
Such questions he had heard countless times throughout the years. Jiang FengMian answered, “Of course I do.”
Madam Yu laughed bitterly, “You do remember, but there’s no use if you simply remember. Wei Ying, he really can’t take it unless he stirs up some trouble, can he? If I had known, I would’ve made him stay in Lotus Pier properly and not go outside. Could Wen Chao really have dared to do anything to the two young masters of the GusuLan Sect and the LanlingJin Sect? Even if he did, it’d mean that they ran out of luck. Since when was it your turn to play the hero?”
Do you remember who is a leader? Do you know what's mine? Do you know the worth of people's lives and what it gains me over the trouble of caring for them unconditionally?
Her arguments can be answered already, "Could Wen Chao really have dared to do anything to the two young masters of the GusuLan Sect and the LanlingJin Sect? Even if he did, it’d mean that they ran out of luck."
Yes, as they had already burned Cloud Recesses and physically harmed Lan Wangi once before. Jin Zixuan was expected to die as he had been abandoned in the cave already with no weapon his consequence was already passed. She also says "so what?" if they did retaliate because it was them choosing to play a game of hero and killing themselves for putting their head up against a higher power and baiting more trouble in the future, regardless of the Wen Sect attacking the sects one by one, and Yunmeng the next to be considered the weakest.
All which is parroted later by Jiang Cheng 13 years later when he demands Wei Wuxian beg in front of an altar, to make amends for deaths that hurt Jiang Cheng even when Wei Wuxian died for those once. He deserved to die for protecting the Wens that caused everything. He was shameless for sticking to Lan Wangji instead of honoring their childhood promise choosing someone else over him and loving another from the start. "What did I gain from you doing the right thing?" is the underlying accusation Madam Yu and Jiang Cheng use as a defense constantly.
Jiang FengMian stood up, “Let’s talk when we get back.”
Madam Yu, “Talk about what? Get back to where? I’ll be talking about it right here. I have nothing to be ashamed of, anyways! Jiang Cheng, come over here.”
Jiang Cheng was stuck between his father and his mother. After a moment of hesitation, he moved to his mother’s side. Holding his shoulders, Madam Yu pushed him forward for Jiang FengMian to see, “Sect Leader Jiang, it seems that some things I have to say. Look carefully—this, is your own son, the future head of Lotus Pier. Even if you frown upon him just because I was the one who bore him, his surname is still Jiang! … I don’t believe for one second that you haven’t heard of how the outside people gossips, that Sect Leader Jiang has still not moved on from a certain Sanren though so many years have passed, regarding the son of his old friend as a son of his own; they’re speculating if Wei Ying is your…”
Jiang FengMian shouted, “Yu ZiYuan!”
Madam Yu shouted as well, “Jiang FengMian! Do you think that anything will change just because you raised your voice?! Do you think that I don’t know you?!”
The two debated the issue outside. On the way, Madam Yu’s angered voice was louder and louder. Jiang FengMian argued as well, suppressing his rage. Jiang Cheng stood blankly where he was. A while later, he glanced at Wei WuXian, and suddenly turned to leave as well.
Madam Yu and Jiang Cheng use harsh language, twisted rumors and others that are dead and gone to guilt others into what they insist is the correct way to make amends to wrongs with wild standards. Madam Yu and Jiang Fengmian fundamentally could not work with the other as an equal unit. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian become the worst of what Yu Ziyuan and Jiang Fengmian had built up before them.
The luxury that was given to Wei Wuxian was that he still had Lan Wangji standing by his side to pull him away from that cycle of continued misunderstandings and refusal of seeing the other as anything other than a person that would be a constant disappointment.

Look I know it's 4am but hear me out – MDZS meets OG Pokemon
Wei Wuxian as a 10yo Ash/Red
Late to the PokeCenter on his first day of becoming a trainer because he overslept, ends up with a grumpy, erratic, super powerful Pikachu he names Suibian because, you know, whatever
Lan Wangji as Gary/Blue from a prominent Pokemon family who you know got up at the ass-crack of dawn to meet his uncle, Professor Lan Qiren
He gets a cool-ass Squirtle he calls Bichen
They size each other up, Lan Wangji is totally not impressed and heads off with his cheering squad of Hanguang-fans
Lan Wangji winning all his battles with his Pokedex-textbook learned information and efficient attacks! Fully grown adults nodding at him like Ah yes, truly Professor Qiren's nephew, such a distinguished Pokemon heritage
Wei Wuxian winning all his battles with a mixture of quick thinking, trial-and-error and pure optimism!
Lan Wangji totally furious that this works! Slowly learning that raising and battling Pokemon is not all about stats and figures, and learning how to bend the rules!
Each of the five sects as a Pokemon gym - Lan Xichen with his flying and ice types, Jiang Yanli with her water types, Nie Mingjue with his fighting and rock types, Wen Qing with her normal types (the last Wen leader used to be a fire type guy so the gym is still all red and in an active volcano but the most annoying thing about Wen Qing’s Pokemon is that they can all heal themselves), and Jin Guangyao with his psychic and poison types (it used to be Jin Zixuan but he left it to his brother after he starts dating Jiang Yanli and moves to Lotus Pier, obviously)
WWX and LWJ get stranded in an island cave at some point and they have to get onto the back of Bichen (evolved into a Blastoise presumably, although also hilarious if he's still tiny) so he can swim out. Nothing says romance like huddling together on a giant tortoise!
They face each other so many times and Lan Wangji always wins until it's eventually in the Pokemon Championships and Wei Wuxian wins and Lan Wangji is like You taught me the power of love through Pokemon battles and Wei Wuxian is like ?? ??? ??
Somewhere along the way they realise the real opponent is not each other, but the creepy organised crime boss lurking in the shadows petting his Persian, who turns out to be Jin Guangyao, the gym leader and CEO of Lanling Jin Corp?? surprised-pikachu.jpg
I know this is crack and I have no idea how this ends but someone else should definitely write it!
Feat:
retired rogue Pokemon Master Cangse Sanren who is perfectly happy to send her 10 year old into the world with nothing more than clean underwear and a washing line
Su She working for Team Rocket except every time he appears Wei Wuxian is like Who are you again? which is how he ends up coming up with a monologue that introduces himself every time he appears, it has rhyming couplets and everything
Sect Leader Yao as that damn Bug Catcher who always manages to turn around and face you just as you’re trying to walk past him so you don’t have to fight his six Lv. 2 Caterpies because asdfghjklkj fuck him

summer of lotus
link to AO3 AUTHOR: monmouthkid G, 19847 words, 3/3
RELATIONSHIPS: Lan Wangji / Wei Wuxian, Jiang Yanli / Jin Zixuan / Wen Qing
SUMMARY:
Lan Wangji didn’t want to be there. After a few hours of travelling, when he got down from Bichen, Lotus Pier welcomed him with a piercing, deep smell that could only come from a swamp: stagnant water, mud, aquatic plants, probably more animal feces than it was healthy to inhale, soon-to-be rotten fruits that had probably fallen from some vendor’s cart or some Jiang disciple’s basket. Lan Wangji scratched his right hand’s palm underneath his robe’s sleeve while everything else hit him: the amount of people, the amount of children, the humid and sticky heat like he’d never felt in Gusu, the constant movement of said people, like they were ants; the dozen of different sounds including laughs, screams, conversations, shoes on the pier’s wood while the other GusuLan disciples went ahead, a sword falling, glasses clicking, a splash in the lake and an accusation, so much noise, so much noise, so much noise- A hand resting on his arm.

MO DAO ZU SHI REREAD:Thoughts™️....and Stuff
Chapter 46
Okay so nmj is wearing a (very tattered) burial robe in this scene
Of course JingYi volunteered to shout at a corpse
“As soon as he had finished, the headless man spun around and walked in the direction of the Lan Sect’s juniors.” Akbfkfkdjf
Jingyi really freaking out, poor boy
Yeah yikes imagine how scary this would have been for the little Lans
Wwx said they wouldnt have to keep on walking and his solution was to call out to lwj
“A few moments later, the soft, flowing note of a xiao sounded amid the night. Closely following it was the limpid reverberation of a string.” Its The twin jades 🥳🥳🥳
ZeWu-Jun 😩😩😩😩
“Lan XiChen’s expression was especially surprised, almost to the point of shocked.” Anyways lxc basically recognized nmj at first glance
Also yeah I completely forgot that nmj grabs Bichen out of the air, which is quite the feat idk how i didn’t remember this
“as soon as the soft, serene tone of the xiao appeared, the corpse’s movement paused. For a moment, he seemed to have stood still and listened, then turned around, as though he wanted to see who was the one playing the music.” Fuck you 😭😭😭😭
It took the combined effort of lwj, lxc, and wwx all playing their instruments to calm him down, and he wasnt even being that aggressive
God lxc defending jgy hurts so much goddamnit
Wwx even said that lxc is refusing to admit that jgy is the most sus person
😬😬😬😬
Chapter 47
Jgy kept the murals of jzx up for some reason
Wwx hopped down to stare at jzx’s murals, which hurt me
Thinkin about post canon wangxian going to discussion conferences in place of lxc, with wwx all decked out lan style forehead ribbon and all
Jgy remembers little details about people after only meeting them once or twice
Wwx cant help but look at pretty women
God I remember the first time i read this introduction scene of qin su i was so woo’d by how gentle and loving it was
Nhs comes over just in time to prevent jgy from asking lxc whats wrong and what he’s thinking about
Wwx using his chance to teach jl something AGAIN
“Looks like I can’t keep it from you anymore. That’s right. I’ve fallen for someone else.” Oh the irony
“Wei WuXian, ‘In the past, I couldn’t understand my own heart, but after I met HanGuang-Jun I’m certain.’ He took in a deep breath, ‘I’m already incapable of leaving him. I don’t want anyone else aside from HanGuang-Jun…’” tHE IRONY
Alnfnckwj jl ran the other way hsndmck
HANGUANG-JUN WAS WATCHING THIS GO DOWN WTF
“...as Lan WangJi gazed at him, he actually felt a subtle sense of shame....” uh...yEaH
“Don’t tell me that Jin GuangYao has no son or daughter, or anyone around his age who’s close to him.” 😬
This scene with the paperman and the forehead ribbon still devastates me
“Do not fool around.” “You must be careful.” Bro im literally gonna 😭
Oh also the little unintentional kiss....
Lan XiChen’s paintings, i would love to see them
Wwx recognized the paintings as lxc’s, which means he’s seen enough of them to recognize his style. Lxc’s painting skill are probably well known, being the First Jade of Lan and the number one most eligible bachelor and all.
Jgy is smart
“Just what in the world is written in the letter? Jin GuangYao killed someone and dismembered them?” Yeah, actually that’s probably exactly what’s in there and you know it
Bruh why was it so shocking to find out they’re related when qin su literally said it
“Aside from a desk, an iron table—dark to the eyes, cold to the touch, long enough for a person to lie—was also within the room. There seemed to be black, dried-up traces of something on the surface of the table. Wei WuXian commented in silence, This would be the perfect table to cut someone apart on.”
Jgy talking to nmj’s head creeps me tf out
Did wwx not meet nmj before????
Chapter 48
Wwx said nmj went into seemingly invincible rages during the sunshot campaign
“A while later, his fingers twitched. With downcast eyes, he touched his lips softly. It was very soft indeed, as soft as how the paperman had bumped into them.” this is so Soft....
Lwj pulled wwx into his arms and held his face.....
Nmj is so tall 😍
I fucking HATE how everyone talks about prostitution in this novel good lord
Man idk how people think of nmj as just an angry man, like he very obviously cares about justice and doing the right thing
Lxc was known as “a powerful trump card” during the ssc
“Although Lan XiChen looked almost exactly the same as Lan WangJi, Wei WuXian could tell them apart with just a glance.” This is cute
Nmj doesnt notice microaggressions
Am i freaking out about lxc saying hes gonna have to stay at nmj’s place for the night? Yes. Yes i am.
“Hearing Nie MingJue praise Lan WangJi’s level of cultivation, Wei WuXian felt a strange surge of happiness, ChiFeng-Zun, what a great eye!”
Getting pissed off once again by how the cultivators treat wwx
Wow lxc even said he’d help convince nmj to let jgy leave to help in the jin sect
Nmj even wrote him a recommendation letter wooooow
Nhs was staying with lxc during the ssc
???? Jgy and Lxc’s meeting was embarrassing and neither OH WAIT WHEN CLOUD RECESSES BURNED
“The three chatted back and forth, at times serious, yet at times light. The conversation was much more relaxed than when they had been in the living room.”
Hate jgs
bRO I FORGOT JGY DID THAT
Um the disciples in the hall are walking on their knees??????
Wowza, what a chapter

MDZS headcanons - Madame Lan and Qingheng-jun [PART 1]
So... it happens that I was rewatching the show and I found charming and hilarious how all the people in the town found so many similarities between Lan Wangji and Lan Shizui (when he was Wen Yuan and little and clingy and so so cute that you wanted to put him inside your pocket to protect him), and also, and also I had this need to put in words some ideas about Madame Lan and Qingheng-jun because I think that we only knew a part of the story (the same story that was created by the elders who hated Madame Lan so… Was it all really true?) I cannot imagine Madame Lan or Qingheng-jun telling his sons the real story (they had better things to do as spending time in the first case and meeting them in the second) Also, I’m a sucker for romance in all ways so… here I am xD. Hope you like them :3 (It’s a little long and it will have mistakes because english is not my first language, sorry in advance. Also, this is longer than I have expected so... I will divide it in three parts.)
[Part 1] [Part 2] [Part 3]
But first of all, the names. I’m going to give a name to Madame Lan (because only madame lan isn’t enough) and also to Qingheng-jun (whose name I think is only a title). Also, I’m sorry about any mistakes I could make, I don’t know Chinese and I only have access to Google translate and some other online dictionaries.
Madame Lan
Birth name: Zhi Aiyan: 治爱艳
Zhi (治) for “to rule”, but also for “to treat (a disease) Ài (爱) as in love Yàn (艳) as colorful, splendid.
I have searched the meaning in a online dictionary and the combination of (爱) Ài and (艳) yàn has this meaning: plaintive and beautiful or melancholy but gorgeous. And I think it will suit her really well.
Courtesy name:  Lan Yingyue (蓝映月)
Yìng (映) as in to reflect (light), to shine. Yuè (月) as in moon
The name complete with the surname means reflection of the blue moon (and the why of this name... you will find it below)
Qingheng-jun
Birth name: Lán Suān qū (蓝酸曲)
Suān qū (酸曲) means “love song”
But also, thanks to the dictionary; I found that suān (酸) could means “sick at heart; grieved; sore; aching, pedantic; impractical” and that qū (曲) means song or tune.
Courtesy name: Lán Tiáo Hé (蓝调和), because this two characters means harmonious, to mediate, to reconcile, to compromise.
Headcanons
Zhi Aiyan belongs to a small family specialized in medicine and, more concretely, in problems with the golden core. His father is a cultivator that had learned all he knew thanks to his teaching under the wing of the branch of the Wen Clan that cultivates the medicine (the same branch as Wen Qing and Wen Ning). Her mother, on the other hand, was part of the Wen Clan when she was younger and before she married Zhi Aiyan’s father.
Her parents met there when his father was studying and fall in love with her mother, so Zhi Aiyan always wanted a love match like them.
They live in a small town near Yiling, where her father teaches her all about medicine and the art of cultivation with the help of her mother. She is a great student and soon she also made a little name in the cultivation world, destinated for only men and really few women. But, she isn’t the only one they teach, because his father has a few disciples that are also willing to learn.
When Aiyan turned fourteen, she engaged with one of the disciples of his father. She didn’t want to marry at first because she has in mind a lot of things she wanted to do with her life and also thoughs she was too young to marry anybody. Although, with some time and only because it was something her parents wanted for her (and they always wanted the best for their little girl), she learned to appreciate his fiancé, thinking that she has fallen in love with him at the end.
One night, when she was fourteen and she was searching for some medicinal herbs his father needed, she met Young Master Lan, Lan Tiaohe, in a forest near her house. He was badly injured but she helped him with some leafs of wild ginger and cut the blood of the open wound he had. Tiaohe didn’t saw her or had the opportunity to thank her because: first, he fainted because of the pain and second ‘cause she runs away scared when she heard the voices of the other disciples of GusuLan (they where 'harmless' and would take care of the young man, but she couldn't risk being mistaken for the person who had hurt Tiaohe).
Three years later, Aiyan was traveling before her wedding, searching some medicinal herbs to gift to her fiancé the day of. She was outside the city of Gusu when Tiaohe saw her and “fall in love at the first sight”.
But was it really “love at the first sight”? Tiaohe knew he felt a connection, an attraction to the mysterious woman, but he barely knew her. He was a hopeless romantic so love at the first sight sounded great for him.
He tried to talk with her, but the woman disappeared faster than a flicker. When he reaches Cloud Recesses, he found his little brother he told him that he had saw the perfect girl. “Believe me, Qiren, she looked like a goddess with the moonlight at her back illuminating her and her light color hanfu. I haven’t saw anything so beautiful ever.” Lan Qiren thought his brother had lost his mind because who would like to chase girls when you can improve your cultivation?
Aiyan and Tiaohe met some more times, but, although the young master was really handsome, Aiyan was engaged and his intents never gone to far. He would never insult her that way.
With the months passing, they developed a little friendship whatnever they met in night hunts, learning little things about each other.
One day, when Aiyan was seventeen, she heard that GusuLan Sect Leader had died because of an ilness and that his son, Lan Tiaohe, would succeed him as Qingheng-jun. With that news, she wanted to comfort Tiaohe (because she cannot imagine her life without her father), but she wasn't even near Gusu, so it was difficult to do it. Nevertheless, destiny was on her side and she found, one month later, Tiaohe in the forest. Aiyan comforts him when he said her that he was scared that he would mess up as Sect Leader, but her words made him secure again and happy.
A few time later, her parents decided the date of her wedding and she told Qingheng-jun in a letter (one of many). He congratulated her although he was feeling like dying inside. The woman he was in love with was going to be of other man, she was going to smile at him, hug him, kiss him... That man was going to be the most afortunated of all the world.
Lan Qiren was preocupaded for his older brother, because he was melancholic and sad and seems more a living dead that the brother he knew. That woman, because the cause of his problems had to be one, wasn't what she wanted for his brother and he hated her a little each day. “What happenend, xiongzhang?” “Yingyue is going to get married” “Who?” “The goddess of the moon I have talked about like... everyday.”
Lan Qiren had mixed feelings with that confession but said nothing. That ‘Yingyue’... What Qiren didn’t know was that that name had been given by Tiaohe to her so he will be able to talk about her without anyone being able to trace her and put her in danger (being engaged and all that, it would have been a scandal to talk about Aiyan using her birth name).
The night before the wedding, while Aiyan and his father were in a night hunt, having a last bonding time before she was gone, they fell in a trap. She asked for help of the group of disciples from the GusuLan Sect that were hunting in the forest but, as the monster they were fighting was too powerfull, the elder that was guideing the group left they at their own luck, saving also his disciples. Aiyan’s father died before her eyes.
Aiyan and her mother cancelled the wedding because they were mourning the loss of a father and a husband, respectly. Aiyan and her mother cancelled the wedding because they were mourning the loss of a father and a husband, respectively, and it wasn't time for celebrations. Now, they were all alone in the world.
Aiyan searched his fiancé for comfort, thinking he was going to be with her and her mother in this difficult moments. But the reality was different. She found that her fiancé not only has orchested the death of her father, but also he was aiming to take control over the medical information for selling it.
Aiyan was miserable. She couldn’t conceive that she had been deceived for so long by her fiancé, who had put his own ambition ahead of something else as the health of the people, wishing to keep the medical writings of the Aiyan's family.
Qingheng-jun, for his part, did nothing but talk Qiren about Aiyan, the feats he had heard from her, about how proud, strong and independent she was. A free spirit. The elders heard him one night and weren’t happy about it ‘cause they were preparing the engagement of Qingheng-jun.
Aiyan, devastated, searched revenge, first against her fiancé (whom she managed to drive him away) and, later, against the elder of the Lan clan, although she knew that it would not be so easy to reach the second.
She investigated on the outskirts of the city and was sure she would get him ambushed, however the one she finds is Qingheng-jun. Aiyan, hurt, shouted her that their friendship meant nothing for him, that his clan believed themselves superior just because they belonged to a large sect and that any life that was not their own was less than nothing.
Qingheng-jun wasn’t understanding anything and asked her to please explain to him, but Aiyan was so angry that she tried to attack him with her sword, Bichen. She just had to avenge her father, even if that wasn't going to bring him back. Qingheng-jun gently stopped her and tried to make her reason in a soft voice.
But the same elder who had let her father die in that night hunt, had followed Qingheng-jun so that he wouldn’t commit any madness, seeing the girl and misinterpreting the whole situation (Aiyan was crying in Qingheng-jun's arms).
After a heated discussion, Aiyan shouted all her doubts at the elder (Why didn't he help her father? Why was he so close to her fiancé? What did he get out of all that?) And Qingheng-jun asked his master to please clarify all that.
When the eldest refused to tell her absolutely anything, not wanting to know anything about an opportunistic and dirty woman who only wanted to climb and gain a power position by taking advantage of Qingheng-jun's good feelings, Aiyan launched her into attacking him with her sword, hoping that way she received some more answers, achieving nothing. Just a few wounds that she would have to deal with as soon as she was alone.
Qingheng-jun tried to stop them, calming Aiyan enough to stop her attacks, but his master demanded that, for the sake of the clan, he get away from that bad woman and return to have the upright life that was expected of him, a person of his high position. The man rushed to attack her and, after a few defensive movements with her sword, Bichen pierced, mortally, the body of the elder Lan, who cursed her before falling to the ground and throwing at the air a warning signal.
Aiyan was completely paralyzed without knowing what to do while Qingheng-jun felt his whole world breaking. A disciple who had come by the signal, witnessed the scene and fled to raise the alarm.
Qingheng-jun takes out a small sack with wild ginger leaves and tries to keep his master alive, panicking.
"I ... I did not ..." Aiyan, who never killed people but heal them, was so scared that she couldn’t even run away even if Qinghe-jun was begging her. This was the worst situation he could have ever imagined. He couldn't lose his master and the woman he loved in the same night, it was too much for him. The man had been a second father to him, but Aiyan... She was the woman of his life, the chosen one, the woman for what he knew he would leave everything behind, just as the founder of his sect, Lan An, had done. Qingheng-jun grabbed Aiyan's hand and fled as fast as he could as soon as he heard the rest of the disciples arrive at the alarm voice.
When they were far enough apart, Qinghe-jun spoke to Aiyan and asked her to run away for her life. He could bear not seeing her again as long as she was safe and sound, somewhere in this vast world. He knew that the rest of the clans would persecute her if the elders of GusuLan stipulated that she was a dangerous criminal. But Aiyan couldn't do that. She couldn't leave her mother alone. She had already suffered a lot with everything that had happened.
"I don't mind receiving the punishment. I know what I've done." "It was in self-defense!" "They won't see it that way, you know that." "A-Yan, please." "Sorry, Suanqu."
Then, Qingheng-jun, after cursing slightly, stared at her for several seconds, confident, as wonderful as the night when he first saw her, and told her the only solution he had been able to come up with. It wasn't the brightest idea, but it would keep her and her mother safe. Aiyan didn't understand at first, repeating the bows until she saw what it meant, stopping before the third. And she refused, but Qingheng-jun pleaded her that it was the only way to save them both.
"No!" "It’s the only way!" "The only solution? Let me be punished! I killed a man!" "I can't lose you, Aiyan! Not you... Please..."
As Qingheng-jun tried to convince her, they both heard the footsteps and voices of the rest of the disciples. With one last pleading look, Qinghe-jun removed the ribbon from his forehead and wound it around her wrist, glancing at his sectmates as they reached them, led by other elders and her younger brother Qiren.
“What’s the meaning of this?” “It’s just what it’s seems.” “Xiongzhang, please, come with us.” “I can’t. Not without her.” “She is an assassin!” “No. She is my wife.

MDZS ch.93
yes, you read right. no, it’s not a joke. yes, i finally freaKING SNAPPED AND WENT FOR ANOTHER TRANSLATION BECAUSE I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPEN NEXT AND CAN’T STUDY OTHERWISE. JUST FOR A BIT.
jfskfpowkgvpwo *tries to breath deeply*
WE LEFT OUR BABIES FIGHTING LIKE CHILDREN
Wei WuXian, “Open up.”
Chest puffed and back straight, Lan WangJi stared back with indifferent eyes. Inching slightly forward, his teeth moved from the first joint of Wei WuXian’s finger to the second joint, and then bit down harder.
(way to go lwj, wait to GO BABY)
Wei WuXian, “Ouch!”
At this, Lan WangJi finally let go.
(even while drunk he stops if his husband is hurting)
EDIT: OKAY, what the hell is lwj doing, trying to immobilise wwx by pinning his robe to the ground with Bichen, this is too funny omg-
Hearing this, Lan WangJi sat even more upright. Lowering his head, he wore a slightly guilty expression, as if he knew he had been wrong, and was willingly accepting the admonishment. In the past, Lan WangJi had always been the one chiding Wei WuXian. Only during Lan WangJi’s drunkenness would Wei WuXian ever see the chance to have their roles reversed. Crossing his arms and holding Bichen, Wei WuXian observed him with a cocked head; he was trying to hold in his laughter so hard that his whole body was shaking.
He honestly, absolutely loved drunken Lan WangJi!
(SAME, BABE, SAME.)
EDIT 2:
And so Lan WangJi looked at him and they stared at one another intently. They were close enough that Wei WuXian could count Lan WangJi’s eyelashes. The fresh, cool scent of sandalwood and the sweet, thick scent of alcohol lingered in the air, mixing and tangling between their breaths.
A long moment later, Wei WuXian’s heart was beating so wildly that he couldn’t stand it anymore. He broke off his gaze.
(WWX WAS DEFEATED BY LWJ LOOKING AT HIM
G U Y S  I  C A N ‘ T
I ‘ M  E X P L O D I N G
IF THEY DON’T JUMP EACH OTHER RN I’M GONNA FREAKING GO IN THERE AND “NOW KISS” THEM)
Wei WuXian said, “Fine! You win. Let’s play another game instead. Just like what we’ve done before, I ask and you answer, you’re not allowed to lie……”
Little had he expected that at the word “play”, Lan WangJi immediately said, “Yes!”
Taking Wei WuXian by the hand, Lan WangJi dragged them out of the room in a flurry.
(AHAHAHAHAAHAHAH HELP  H E L P MY ABDOMEN IS KILLING ME I’M LAUGHING SO HARD
WWX: “game”
LWJ: *jumps around happily and throws himself at wwx”
i’m alive.)
EDIT 3: GUYS
GUYS WHY IS LWJ STEALING A CHICKEN AND GIVING IT TO WWX AS A GIFT?
just. why? omg i don’t have the energy for this, i honestly feel my lungs closing up and i can’t breath-
EDIT 4: lwj is stealing dateS wtf-
EDIT 5:
Earlier at the Lotus Pier, he had brought Lan WangJi to all the old places he’d used to play at as a boy, and told him stories of all kinds of adventures he’d had. Many of those stories had involved his “glorious feats of conquests”. Perhaps Lan WangJi had remembered those stories to heart and now wanted to experience them for himself?

IS DRUNK LWJ TRYING TO WOO WWX? OMG HE IS, RIGHT? OMG I LOVE HIM SO MUCH-
