This weekend's read, by Sierra Leone author Namina Forna, was one of the best feminist speculative fiction works I've read this year! Reminiscent of Tomi Adeyemi's Children of Blood and Bone and Tochi Onyebuchi's Beasts Made of Night, this book's worldbuilding shines, its characters grip your heart, and its twists compel. Protagonist Deka is a normal village girl, albeit viewed with prejudice because of her mixed Southern heritage, until the womanhood ceremony where her blood is revealed as gold, and she is plunged into a nightmare. Instantly condemned as a demon by her community and betrayed by those she loved, she is forced to endure the horrifying Death Mandate - until a mysterious woman shows up, inviting her to become a member of a warrior sisterhood dedicated to fighting the nightmarish Deathshrieks that plague their land. Deka's character development as she grows into her confidence and power is beautiful to behold - her transformation from a shame-filled victim of a system of beyond-misogynistic oppression to a spirited survivor, defender of others and advocate for her fellow oppressed, is done believably and brilliantly! She is an unforgettable heroine, and I eagerly await the sequel in June. #yafantasy #speculativefiction #worldbuilding #feministlit #feminist #africanfantasy #blackspeculativefiction https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd3Vcp5OEP0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Kate Chopin, Her Letters
"With feverish apprehension she began to search among the letters before her. Which of them had she so ruthlessly, so cruelly put out of her existence? Heaven grant, not the first, that very first one written before they had learned, or dared to say to each other 'I love you.' No, no; there it was, safe enough."

LOVE this poem by @mejgan.writes mother i am told i have your eyes and yet what you see as life, i see as a graveyard you do not know what to do with a daughter like me a daughter you deem difficult because she does not know how to stay silent and swallow her grief like all the women before her you have watched the women in your family shrink themselves for decades and i frighten you because i occupy more space than what is allowed for women like us you plead with me this is how the world is for women like us accept it, otherwise the fire will burn you and swallow you whole mother, haven’t you heard i am the fire and i will rain hell on anyone who tries to put out my flames .... #Poetry #Afghanistan #AfghanWomen #WomensRights #WomensLiterature #Feminist #FeministAF #FeministLit #Brave #Poem #Motherhood #shortpoems

Graphic memoir turned award-winning Broadway musical. Depicts the author’s childhood spent in a funeral home and an antique-filled old house. Packed with family drama, murky truths, great vocabulary, and some mature content. Highly recommended for high school and up!🏠 #graphicmemoir #graphicmemoirs #graphicnovel #graphicnovels #lesbian #lesbianbooks #lesbianlit #lesbianliterature #feminist #feministbooks #feministlit #feministliterature #gay #gaybooks #gaylit #gayliterature #lgbt #lgbtbooks #lgbtlit #lgbtliterature #memoir #broadwaymusical #antiques #architecture #gayauthors #lesbianauthors #instantclassic #tragicomic #bookstagram #pennsylvania https://www.instagram.com/p/BtHqP7Pj07D/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=7wzfcs5g768o

This is my favorite anthology I've read this year, and I've read several! 13 speculative fiction stories, each inspired by a Poe tale? Yes please! I pressed the Place Hold button so fast I almost closed the tab. And these did not disappoint! Each story is as compelling as it is creative, brilliantly reimagining each tale. Some change the context, placing a story in a different time or situation, while others center characters of the kinds Poe's writing neglected - women whose strength and vulnerability are equally well portrayed, LGBTQ heroes and heroines, servants, people with disabilities, people of many ethnicities, and more. These stories make you think, feel, and wonder, in the same way that Poe's originals do. This work and Poe's are excellent companions to each other, and if I taught high school English, I would assign this book without hesitation during a unit on Poe. In fact, one of the things I found so helpful about this collection, too, is its inclusion of the original Poe stories at the end of the volume. Since I'd read some Poe stories more recently than others, it was nice to be able to go back and re-read some of the ones I was more rusty on before I read the associated reimagining. Although all the stories were fantastic, a few of my favorites were Tessa Gratton's Annabel Lee - a beautiful but tragic Victorian era love story between women - and Caleb Roehrig's The Pit and the Pendulum, a gripping and truly scary retelling, also from a female perspective. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys Poe, scary stories, speculative fiction, classics reimagined, YA lit, anthologies, and just genuinely great stories! #diverseya #poe #edgarallanpoe #feministlit #horrorbooks #scarystories #classicsreimagined #retelling https://www.instagram.com/p/CHEWTiNBYFk/?igshid=lehbhexc9he6

Kate Chopin's "Regret"

Kate Chopin: "Mamzelle Aurlie had never thought of marrying. She had never been in love. At the age of twenty she had received a proposal, which she had promptly declined, and at the age of fifty she had not yet lived to regret it." https://americanliterature.com/author/kate-chopin/short-story/regret

Today is a celebration of all women, in all places, with big dreams, who stand up and fight, and who speak up and write. Today is a day to wear red, to rise in solidarity, to cry: WE ARE WOMAN!
