This photo book is comprised of statements by participants and observers of the nonviolent 'people power' revolution. Events are shown and described chronologically, beginning with Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino's return to Manila in August 1983, his assassination and funeral (the latter turning into the first major anti-Marcos demonstration), and ending with a photo of Corazon Aquino addressing an ecstatic throng. The 247 pictures collected here, many taken by amateurs, are alternately scary, touching, and inspiring. Included are shots of citizens guarding ballot boxes against government goons, crowds shielding reformist soldiers against loyalist task forces, and people attempting to disarm the Marcos troops with flowers.

If you feel reduced for being a Filipino, especially these days, try reading The Philippines Is Not A Small Country by Gideon Lasco. You just might regain that Filipino pride along with widening your perspective. Nonetheless, this is a good read.

Chase Domingo's life revolves around the law and legal arguments. He is a Lawyer and a Legal Professor, and his conclusions are rarely wrong. From the moment he first sees Hera Tadea in a little black dress, he knew it was hate at first sight.
Hera is a spoiled, impulsive, broken-hearted best friend of his little sister, Lynne. Chase finds her arguments flimsy and irritating. She is lethally attractive, he must admit, and if she wasn't so tactless, he could have liked her better. Ebony black hair, decanter-shaped waist, velvety eyelashes and a job as a Certified Public Accountant - anyone could fall for her except Atty. Chase Domingo. As far as he could tell, the hatred was visibly mutual from the start.
To grant his sister's request, he allows Hera to stay in his home for a month, where they will find themselves torn between attraction and animosity. The hostility they once felt for each other will turn into something neither of them saw coming.

Written by an author whom received "Best Fiction in Filipino at the 36th National Book Awards (2017)." I have really high expectations na magiging maganda talaga ang storya na ito. So when I finally finished reading this book and began writing down some notes. I started writing this review and summing up my thoughts.
Starting with the positives: I really like na madaling mai-digest ang mga impormasyon na ipinapakita dito. Hindi siya nakakalito, maganda ang pacing niya, at hindi complicated yung mga dialogue. This book is also very informative and I learn a lot about "Logical Fallacies," kaya if ever na need kong makipag away to someone. This will book will help me a lot ( ‾́ ◡ ‾́ )
Next are the negative aspects of the story: So far, wala naman akong masasabing directly negative sa storya na ito. I only dislike how Chase and Hera bicker to each other, but then, I'm not really a big fan of 'enemies to lovers' dynamic, kaya hindi naman iyon kasalan ng libro.
My only issue in the book however. Is that. Bakit dadalawa ang version ng libro nito kahit na ang pinagkaiba lang naman ay ang bookcover at parehas lang ang contents niya?! I accidentally bought another copy, thinking it was a book two and learning later on na the same lang naman pala ang laman niya. Sayang talaga ang money haysst...
Anyways, if you like a story, whose leading couple starts with being irritated with each other, then soon develop feelings for each other and finally being lovers. Then, this book might be for you.

Hi Tumblr I'm an Asian fantasy author fleeing the sudden death of all my other social media sites 👋 I've used Tumblr for years as a fandom lurker and rarely posted but in light of all my other communities imploding I guess I'll have to figure out how to be actually active on Tumblr and find bookish and writerly folks here 💜 say hi if that's you 🥺
If you love diverse filipino fantasy with bipoc leads, angry bi women clawing for space in a world that's always rejected them and soft boys who'd do anything for them, awesome elemental magic based on early Filipino shaman/ babaylan/katalonan mythologies and the Tagalog creation story, and the Bakunawa/Laho the 🇵🇭 sea dragon 🐉 and drowning colonizers then I hope you'll keep an eye out for SAINTS OF STORM AND SORROW coming in June 2024 from Titan Books

I saw someone somewhere say that not all the Aphrodite kids are “conventionally” attractive AND I WILL STAND BY THAT!!!!
Because yes!!! They’re not all white and skinny there’s gotta be some variety. They’re the children of the goddess of love and beauty, self love is a given. Confidence makes the most beautiful people.
Like even if some of them have braces or acne or whatever, I know they’re all beautiful and charming like it’s the vibes you know? People try so hard to make braces seem awkward but some of the prettiest girls I know have braces and they LOVE to laugh and show them off.
I also just know the Aphrodite boys are ACTUALLY CLEAN. They all actually wear chapstick, put on deodorant, brush their teeth and T A K E B A T H S. Nothing is more attractive than a man that actually washes his ass let me tell you.
What makes all the Aphrodite kids beautiful is that they’re all confident, there’s no way all of them have pretty baby blues or the metabolism of fucking cheetahs. And I just know they’re supportive like come on. Hot bitches don’t gate keep

@autisticempathydaemon said they loved my Angel listener (along with everything else it was SO SWEETTT OMLLL<333) so here’s a doodle for you! They’re also one of my favorites!
Look at that face.
Tumblr media
Full of mischief.
Tumblr media
Some fun facts about them: they’re native! Specifically they could be from the Salishan (but I don’t know too much so I leave it ambiguous) and are half Filipino, born and raised in British Columbia, Canada around Vancouver. They were raised by their mom and brothers, then moving to dahlia for college.
They originally planned to secure a high end job in Vancouver just going to California for school but they met David. They still visit their family as often as they can.
They’re 5’4, the shortest listener! Aklag is still beefy and could definitely throw David over their head. Their callouses are from being raised on a farm, and they’re starting to fade now.
I took them out of another story I made a while ago so I’m still trying to tweak them seamlessly so I’ll actually maybe probably not but make a backstory sheet for my listeners?
Thank you sm for your words and I hope you like it!

Minsan ko nang ibinigay ang tiwala at pagmamahal ko sa isang tao. Pero ano ang nangyari? Ginamit at sinaktan lang ako. Since that day, I vowed to never trust anyone again. I vowed to never let anyone have the chance to hurt me again. Until Paulo came.
Sa kabila ng lahat ng pagtataboy at pagpapahirap ko sa kanya, he stayed. Paunti-unti, tinunaw niya ang yelong matagal nang bumalot sa aking puso. Just like how the sun brings warmth after the long winter. And just like that, I broke the promise I made to myself.
Everything was already planned out. Pero bakit kung kailan masaya na ako, saka naman naging iba ang plano ng tadhana?
I am Angeline Cruzette Sy. This is the story of my and Paulo’s love…

A story about a fifteen-year-old high school student, falling in love and having a relationship with her twenty-five-year-old bodyguard. "The Ten-Year Gap" by Owwsic, Is one of those stories that I remember reading fondly about, and recommending to my friends when I was young. It has been controversial since then, and I'm here to give it a review and see how it will hold up to older me.
First and foremost the age gap. Age gaps in novels are not new. I, for the most part, have read a lot of them out there, and honestly, I have no qualms about the subject as long as it is addressed appropriately. In this book tho, it was handled very poorly, and the way the author justifies the leads being together by writing it as an "us against the world" narrative was kinda disturbing. I also don't understand how the parents of the female lead are seemingly okay with their daughter having a relationship with an older man, and how the supporting characters in the novel cheer them on for having an illegal dynamic.
The characterization in this story was also kinda meh. Describing the heroine as a bratty teen who mostly acts out as a result of neglect, and the male lead as a sweet guy who looks out for the fl. Sweet if you haven't taken into account that he's crushing on a minor. Overall this is an average novel with an alarming plot, having the ending being the only thing that I like about this novel.

Notes on "Empire of Care : Nursing and Migration in Filipino American History"
Tumblr media
Filipino nurse migration to the United States is just one aspect of a larger global flow of predominantly female migrants from the Philippines to over 130 countries.
This migration trend contrasts with early Philippine immigration, which consisted mainly of male labourers to the United States
Tumblr media
The migration of highly skilled nurses across borders is both a celebratory sign of their training and expertise but also highlights global power dynamics, where nurses from countries with severe nursing shortages migrate to provide care in highly developed countries like the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
Despite the important role of Filipino nurse migrants, little is known about their development and experiences.
Existing studies often group Filipino nurse migrants with other Asian professional migrants, which masks the unique aspects of their migration.
These studies often explain Filipino nurse migration through U.S. immigration legislation and economic opportunities, such as the 1965 U.S. Immigration Act and nursing shortages after World War II.
The "brain drain" theory is commonly used to explain professional migration from Asian countries, suggesting that professionals leave due to a lack of opportunities and economic incentives in their home countries.
Filipino nurse migrants are sometimes depicted as impersonal objects of study, preventing a comprehensive understanding of their multidimensional roles as historical agents, professionals, women, and immigrants.
Tumblr media
The migration of highly skilled nurses reflects a global power structure where countries with nursing shortages, including the Philippines, send nurses to provide professional nursing care in highly developed countries like the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The World Health Organization (WHO) report highlights the inequitable distribution of nurses worldwide, with developing countries having only 15 percent of the world's nurses despite housing two-thirds of the world's population (Empire of Care).
The culture of migration, shaped by narratives about the promise of immigration to the United States, including media portrayals and experiences shared by Filipino nurse migrants already in the U.S, plays a significant role in motivating Filipino nurses to seek opportunities abroad.
U.S. hospital recruiters actively collaborate with Philippine travel and recruitment agencies to aggressively recruit Filipino nurses, shedding light on what some researchers call the "institutionalisation of migration." However, these aspects are often overlooked in research, leaving a "critical void" in understanding the dynamics of Filipino nurse migration.
The lack of study about the exploitation faced by Filipino nurses from both Philippine and American recruiters and their American hospital employers is concerning. Additionally, the scapegoating of Filipino immigrants during challenging political times and the absence of professional solidarity between Filipino and American nurses remain underexplored issues.
The studies that include Filipino nurse migrants also marginalise and simplify the complex and dynamic history of the colonial relationship between the United States and the Philippines.
Pervasive myths of U.S. exceptionalism and benevolence persist and influence the perception of colonial history, downplaying the violent conquest of the Philippines and the racialized hierarchies it created. These myths are also perpetuated in contemporary times through media narratives about immigration and the incorporation of the "Third World" into the United States.
Despite their highly educated and skilled backgrounds, professional Asian immigrants, including Filipino nurses, still face resentment and hostility, as exemplified by the case of nuclear physicist Wen Ho Lee.
Tumblr media
Foreign nurses, especially Filipino nurses, have been criticised for "taking jobs" from American nurses, leading to debates about their immigration and examination requirements. This criticism often overlooks the complex factors involved in Filipino nurse migration and the collaboration between Philippine and U.S. entities in facilitating the process. It also implies that Filipino nurses exploit the United States, rather than the reality of the situation (the United States exploiting Filipino nurses).
The history of U.S. colonialism in the Philippines perpetuated the interrelated myths of "white love" and "little brown brothers." These myths claimed that Americans embraced their colonial subjects with benevolence and enlightened American systems of education, infrastructure, and public health. Not only does this further promote the myths of American benevolence and American exceptionalism , it portrays Americans as superior to their Filipino counterparts in a racialised hierarchy.
American Exceptionalism in this context means Americans juxtaposing themselves against their "Brutal, European counterparts" in order to paint themselves as a benevolent force in the Philippines.
