Birthday Jacket Interview - Quinn
Tumblr media
Today's date, April 4th, marked a special occasion. The birthday of a certain individual named Quinn. Said birthday fella was standing in Ramshackle's lounge, swinging back and forth on their heels with their hands in the pockets of the jacket given to them for this special occasion. The outfit was rather comfy, they had to admit. As for the lounge, it was decorated with streamers and balloons, a sign with the words HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! hanging on a rather large window. On the table were baked sweets, courtesy of the dorm's prefect who had currently left them alone.
"Ah, it's finally my birthday." They acknowledged with a smile before pursing their lips and rubbing their hand absentmindedly. "Hm. Nicole said that I'd get a birthday interview by one of the students here. I wonder who it's gonna be though."
"Happy birthday, Quinn!" As if on que, a certain bat fae popped up upside down infront of them with a friendly smile as if he wasn't trying to scare the living daylights out of them. Which he succeeded in doing.
"AHHH!!" With a startled screech, Quinn instinctively aimed their fist to punch him. Fortunately, Lilia's reflexes were fast and he was able to block their punch on time. Quickly realizing who it was, they pulled their hand back, putting it on their hip. "Lilia? You're the one who's gonna be interviewin' me?"
"Fufufu. Your reactions never fail to amuse me." He admitted with an amused chuckle. "Yes, I'm going to be the one interviewing you on your special day. But first..." He disappeared for a split second before appearing on the floor, handing them what appeared to be a jewelry box. "What kind of friend would I be if I didn't bring you a gift?"
Their expression turned into an interested one as they took the box from him. Curiosity taking the better of them, they opened the lid to see a small silver chain, a single bat shaped pendant attached to it, the black jewels it was filled with glistening in the light. Their emerald eyes widened in surprise, sparkling with amazement.
"I noticed that you sometimes wear a pair of bat earrings among other accessories you change daily and I thought it would be nice to give you something to go along with them. Seems like I was right on the money based on your reaction." Lilia explained, chuckling at their expression.
"Huh. Honestly, I ain't surprised you noticed that." Quinn admitted, chuckling. "Thanks though. I was actually savin' thaumarks on getting it, so your gesture is much appreciated." Then they walked to the table and put the box there before going back to the old fae.
"Oh, I'm glad I could be of help then. Even though it was unintentional." Lilia smiled, crossing his arms. "Now, are you ready to start the interview?"
They nodded rather eagerly. "Yessir! Bring me them questions!"
He chuckled at their excitement before asking the first question. "Alright. First question. If you could bring someone with you on a deserted island, who would it be? However, it can't be someone from your dorm."
"Deserted island, huh...?" They mumbled, fidgeting with the jacket's buttons thoughtfully, taking their sweet time to think of the answer. Good thing the bat fae was a patient individual. After a minute, they replied. "Hm... I'd probably bring you if I'm being honest."
"Oh?" He seemed intrigued by the answer, putting a hand on his chin as the other was tucked underneath his elbow. "And why is that?"
"Well, you just give me those vibes that you have great survival skills. And I trust you're gonna make sure neither of us fucks up. You can probably use your magic to teleport us back here, but if whatever reason you can't, maybe you didn't have your magestone or something and we know how dangerous that can be, I imagine Hornton sending a search party for us." Quinn explained, fidgeting with the bowtie on their outfit. Malleus, Lilia, Silver and Sebek were close like a family in Quinn's eyes. If there was one thing they learned, it was that family shouldn't turn their backs on each other.
"Hmm..." Lilia hummed in thought. "I'll admit those are some pretty valid points." He said before deciding to move on. "Anyway, next question. If you could transfer to any other dorm, which would it be?"
"An interesting question, I'll admit." They pursed their lips, their hand resting on their waist. "I'd say..." they trailed off, fingers tapping against their hip. "Probably Savanaclaw. And not only because their courtyard has enough space to let me practice my acrobatics without worrying about breaking anything. Except for my equipment or bones."
"Savanaclaw, huh? You answered that one faster than the last one." He noticed, chuckling. "Honestly, I can see you being in said dorm. You're quite the persistent individual and know how to put those territorial beastmen in their place."
"Damn right." Quinn replied in a sassy manner, nodding.
Lilia chuckled before his lips formed a mischievous smile. "Now, do you know what's coming?"
Luckily for Quinn, Nicole was considerate enough to tell them everything that was gonna go down in the interview. So, they were aware of what was coming after the questions. "The gift of good fortune?" They guessed, knowing they were right.
"Khee he he~ That's right!" He snickered as a paper plate with pink cream appeared in his hand. "Now, don't try to dodge or else your year is gonna be pretty unfortunate~" Lilia warned with a mischievous smirk and a playful glint in his wine red eyes before aiming to throw the cream at them.
While Quinn couldn't dodge, they could at least try to shield their face and hair. As Lilia threw the plate, they were quick to bring their arms up, making the cream stain the sleeves of the jacket, some of it managing to get on their chest.

I like to think that while Quinn's personality is opposite to Sam’s his appearance is as well. For example I believe Sam has light grey (that were once green) eyes and blonde hair while Quinn has dark red eyes and Dark brown almost black hair.
While Sam has a broader more visible build, Quinn is lanky. Sam's face is rounder and softer while Quinns is sharp and hard. They’re Opposites.
Idk just a though.

LEGO Batman Art Build Review
Tumblr media
The Dark Knight, the Clown Prince Of Crime & the crazed-love Harley Quinn have taken the LEGO world into their world. Partnering with DC & Jim Lee, LEGO has released the Batman art set.
Both similar and different to the Art Project, Batman comes with 3 available options out of the box with two extra options shown in the instruction book that require either two or three extra sets...or if you want every creation possible, 3 individual sets, 3 for the large Batman and 2 for Batman & Catwoman, making a total of seven extra sets you’ll need to build every possible creation listed in the instructions. Does The Dark Knight & his most hated villains hold to the art standard LEGO has put out or look like a first grader’s paint project? Let’s find out.
Design
The great thing is that each design is unique to one another depending on what you choose to build but be forewarned about something I’ll touch on later piece wise. Each individual design of the three original options you can choose from all look great in their own way.
For example, Batman obviously is the early model of Batman (I think from the 60s) while Joker & Harley look a bit more like the modern versions. The large Batman while requiring multiple sets looks as one of the best available large builds. Out of the box, Harley looks the most unique as she uses a different amount of the 16 colors available while it’s easy to tell that both Batman & Joker use specific colors to build.
Build & Difficulty
At 4,167 pieces, the Batman art project is both similar and different to the Art Project. The similarities while few are important as with every art set available in building the 16x16 tile structures and hooking them in along with building the frame as well as the buildable color key and that’s it for the similarities. The differences lie around the amount of potential builds possible. While the Art Project has 36 (outside of the large Spaceman), Batman only has 5, but one major difference is that Batman comes with a soundtrack builders can listen to while working on a build of their choice and all 3 builds come in one instruction book.
One of the major things with the Batman set is depending on what build you choose (at least the standard builds available on the box), you’ll end up with a lot of the colors you don’t use, at least from my personal experience I did. Say if for example you choose to build The Joker, you’ll use a lot of green, purple, white, black and grey or Batman will use a lot of blue. One of the other major differences is that this set uses 1x1 studs while the Art Project used circular pieces. While there aren’t as many options available, the options available are more eye catching once completed and put on the wall and include a Jim Lee DC Collection print piece which looks exquisite when placed at the bottom of the set and makes the project pop a lot more.
Final Thoughts
At $119.99, this is a good deal for the amount of pieces you get and while you get less options, they look more eye catching than the Art Project even though that set has more and is meant to really build the spaceman. I hate to compare this to the Art Project since they’re two different art sets, but given it’s the only other art set I have, I have to compare and contrast the two. One of the major disadvantages is the unbalanced use of some colors compared to others depending on which of the three available in-box options you choose to build as by the end, you’ll end up with less colors left than others that are hardly used.
Pros
+Good piece for price value
+Available options look more detailed
+Extra build options look just as good as the available in-box options
+Looks great when displayed on the walls
Cons:
-Disproportionate use of certain colors over others dependent on build choice
Score:
Build Design: 5/5
Build Difficulty: 3.75/5
Creativity & Fun: 4.5/5
Final Score: 13.25/15
Final Grade: B+
Recommendation: Buy It

New day, new post!
I find this chibi practice to be quite effective in showcasing the characters! So what I think will be happening is that most of the characters will first be seen through this design before having their individual post which takes more time…
So here we have a bunch of new fellows and gals to cover!
1st: Harley Quinn: I made my previous post about her so nothing new under the sun! Still, getting to use the markers to practice shadows and textures is fun, Harley being a fun example of that.
2nd: Catwoman! You guys already saw some sketches of her, and nothing was tweaked tbh, I mostly tried out different hues of grey and blacks to find some equilibrium where you could identify the different parts of her armor to see some of the details! I actually have her in the lineup for the next individual post so keep your eyes peeled for more info on her actual design !
3rd: Ra’s Al Ghul, the demon’s head. Okay so I can’t wait to get to him, just to tease you, he IS the strongest of the Rogues, not necessarily the most dangerous because he doesn’t have the relentless nature of say Joker or Bane but still. The man scares Batman every time he is around. I won’t spill the beans of his design although their are obvious influences (Arkham city wink wink*). Color wise I wanted to have hints of green to show the connection with the Lazarus pit and break away from the classic grey or brown trope of color choice.
4th: Professor Pyg! Boy is he fun to draw as well, but he is really really unsettling and creepy! I remember the mission in Arkham Knight and…shivers man 😅😅 His look doesn’t have much thought to it, I think the mask is a combo of several looks including the Arkham one! And that’s it! He was a quick one to render as well, the pop of yellow with the gloves is a look I dig !
5th: Black Mask! Once again, this badass and one of my favorites out of the baddies is basically here for my personal pleasure of drawing him. Still really fond of the blood eyes which makes him look mad intimidating!
6th and last: Riddler! Hehehehe now this one was a fun one to do! He might be really growing on me ever since the Batman Movie, even the Gotham series showed me the potential of this guy! I have quite a lot to say about our friend once his post comes up, just don’t let his flashy suit fool you, he is more akin to the Zodiac of Reeve’s vision…gotta say though the mask which is relying on Daft Punk gives off a silent mime aspect and creepy and really what I wanted 😍
So there you go !

D&D Classes as Superheroes!
For when you wanna play a superhero-themed game, but don't got your hands on Mutants & Masterminds
Artificer: Your 'super powers' come from the various tech and gadgets you build. This is your Batmen/women, Ironman, and the Atom. Punisher can also fit here if you count 'gun' as a superpower, but I feel that's more like a Gunslinger!Fighter, lol.
Barbarian: Strength is absolute! How you get your strength varies, but you literally strong arm villains. From Hulk to Juggernaut; Wolverine can also fit in here, as can Aquaman. Superman in a sense ca fit here, but I'd suggest Paladin for reasons below. Really, any superhero with a focus on Strength can fit here if you're stuck.
Bard: This requires a lot of stretching; your hero can run the gambit from jovial and charismatic to demanding and masterful. This can be Spiderman & The Flash due to their quips or Magneto and Professor X due to their abilities to inspire and manipulate. You can be more literal, with characters like Pied Piper.
Blood Hunter: You come straight from the Dark Age of Comics; your powers come at a terrible price. One could consider them more of a curse than a blessing. Think Spawn! Venom! Kane! Hellboy! Various X-Men, but Nightcrawler comes to mind, but also see Cleric.
Cleric: Your faith is your power. A God, or Gods, have blessed you with your might. Shazam! No, really, that's my example. You could reflavor Nightcrawler as this to not play up the Mutant aspect of his character, same for Angel. Sacrilegious, but I'd argue Thor and Wonder Woman can fit in here due to the divine origin of their powers.
Druid: Nature! From plants to animals. You might need twist things a bit to justify, things, but plenty of heroes can fit in under one aspect or another. Poison Ivy & Beast Boy are the first ones that come to mind, but also Swamp Thing! Be the Avatar of the Green!
Fighter: So broad that really almost any hero can fit in here, probably cause Fighters get a wide range of set-ups. Daredevil, Deadpool & Death Stroke, Hawkgirl and Hawkman, Starfire; Wonder Woman probably fits more naturally in here. Storm and Captain Marvel would make good Eldritch Knights. I already mentioned Punisher. Green Arrow and Hawkeye would make perfect Sharpshooters and Battle Masters.
Monk: You walk the path of the Martial Artist. Iron Fist is the go-to Monk, but Daredevil & Wildcat can also fit down here too. Taskmaster and Captain American can also fit here, but check out Paladin. Good luck living up to the hype of Lady Shiva, though...
Paladin: Perfect for when you wanna play a Hero who has a strong sense of justice; a code of ethics that they must follow. Like an Oath. This is where Superman fits best thematically. Wonder Woman and Captain American can also fit here. And depending on how you play it, Batman and the rest of the Batfamily can also fit down here. Let's not forget Spiderman; with great power, there must also be great responsibility. And there's also the Green Lantern corp.
Ranger: Heroes with animal companions fit well down here, such as Squirrel Girl or The Falcon. Oh yeah, and now that we have the new Drake Warden subclass, Kitty Pryde and Lockheed can be down here! Oh, and you can make a character who got Detective Chimp on his shoulder! But also heroes with an archery theme, like Green Arrow and Hawkeye.
Rogue: When being slick and sly is the name of the game; can be a token evil teammate, but there ARE heroes with this sort of moveset. Catwoman, depending on the writer, and Harley Quinn, depending on the era, fit down here and can run with a party of heroes just fine. I'd argue that Star-Lord would fit here just fine as well.
Sorcerer: When your magic is a gift from birth. Ironically, NOT where the Sorcerer Supreme would be. A good place for Captain Marvel though, who I think is the sorcerer supreme right now(maybe?). A lot of mutants, like Storm, Cyclops, and Iceman can fit pretty comfortably here as well. Jean Grey could fit here...
Warlock: For when your powers are from some other force. If you twist it enough, Jason Blood (aka Etrigan) can work with the former acting as his patron. Raven as well. This is where I'd slap Jean Grey if I wanted to play up the Phoenix as a Patron-which would be pretty interesting and kinda kick-ass.
Wizard: The learning and practice of magic. Finally, we can play Dr. Strange! Also works well for Constantine and Zartana. Raven can also fit in here. Surprisingly not a lot of characters fit this role traditionally, but really, you could slot in a lot of characters here if you just want their powers since, well, there are a LOT of Spells that Wizards can get to emulate a ton of characters. They're the Magical to Fighter's Martial.

Happy Holidays @the-apostates-martyr ! I hope you had a good december so far and got through these difficult times. I almost fistpumped when I got my assignment because I am an avid Quinn fan. This little one-shot turned out a bit more pensive and foreshadowing than I liked so I added a little bonus drawing titled ‘a few hours before the tragedy’ to lighten the mood. I hope you like it!
From: @tjada-sees-the-world-go-round
~~~
It’s been a difficult season. Not for me alone but also for Mona. I feel guilty for not enjoying it as much as I should considering all we lived and suffered through together. My melancholic mood not only makes me almost insufferable but also disturbs my lovely companion.
The winter solstice had passed and we could already feel the oppressive lengthening of the days in the bones of the earth. Oppressive only to us, of course. The new born children of the night. The nights that had lengthened with the slowly dropping temperatures had filled us with freedom and joy. How could they have not? We were new immortals hungry for anything and anyone who crossed our path in the darkness, in the night.
Images of my Ophelia crowned with flowers, dancing through the blackness, appeared to rise from the fog that had slowly settled around the old oak tree where I had sat down. Even though the real Mona was not too far away I was entranced by the lovely vision in the fog. Tendrils of thick vapour coiled around the legs of the dancing figure like snakes slowly wrapping themselves around tree branches. Her skeleton thin body twisted and turned and although my Salomé was made out of grey and dreary fog I could almost see her blood red hair in it. Her beautiful green eyes looked at me in a mocking fashion. “Look at what you’re denying yourself,” they seemed to say. But I was not denying myself. The ending of the longest night had put me in a strange mood and so I had wandered into the forest to be alone with my thoughts for a while. It was quite unfair that this hazy phantom of my Ophelia would mock me like this since I had suffered under pesky apparitions my entire life.
The night had only started and here I was caught in a horrible, self-deprecating mood with a dancing mist reflection mocking me while my lover was tucked away in the main house. I forcefully dragged my eyes away from the phantom and leaned my head back against the trunk of the oak tree. The tree had already shed all of its leaves and the twisted naked branches looked like pale skeleton hands grasping for something just out of their reach. Maybe they too miss the sun I thought and briefly wondered if vampires too could suffer from a winter depression. I had to laugh involuntarily. The immortals Mona and I had met on our aimless travel had seemed anything but mentally stable. Especially Lestats scattered entourage had left a long lasting impression of mania and misery on us. But who am I to judge? Still I silently giggled while thinking about Lestats answer to what he planned to do now. Lestat really had a sometimes questionable taste in companions. But what fun they had and would have again! The truly wonderful part about immortality was that one had all the time in the world to spend it with loved ones. Mona and I as well would have centuries to gorge ourselves on each other’s company, get sick of each other, fall apart, yearn and ultimately reunite again.
The cold bark of the tree behind me felt heavenly against my equally cold body. I imagined the tree breaking open and encasing me in it, only opening up when spring would begin to thaw the ground. I sighed, a persistent human habit, and opened my eyes. The sky above me had slowly started to lighten, the elegant black of a winter night silently phasing into a somber grey. And while my gaze was still fixed on the terrible bare skeleton branches of the oak tree I realised that little flakes of white slowly started to drift towards me. Finally, for the first time this season, it had begun to snow. A smile slowly formed on my face as I watched the little fluffs drift towards me. Each little ice crystal formed a perfect example of astonishing beauty and symmetry. I lifted one of my hands as if to catch one since they surely would not melt on my cold skin when I saw it.
Although I could not really tell how much time had passed since I closed my eyes, the hazy vision in front of me was still present. Only now my Ophelia’s grey doppelganger had begun to dance en pointe as if the ground itself would hurt her delicate feet. And then I saw the flames. The playfully coiling snakes from before had transformed into a horrible grey fire that licked and clawed at my lovers legs. Horrified I watched as her face twisted in agony before she finally turned towards me and in despair raised her arms in my direction, as if I could pull her out of that viciously burning fire and into the real world. Behind her looming like a stone cross over the grave, I saw vengeful, hateful Rebecca. I twisted my hands in agony into my own clothes and distantly noticed how I ripped the horrible sweater Mona had given to me with my vampire strength. Finally the flames engulfed her and the vision suddenly stopped. Only fog remained in front of me- no phantoms at all. For a moment I swore my heart had started beating again from the dread that filled my entire body.
Calm, calm you fool! I told myself. Not all visions are prophetic and nothing is ever as it seems. I willed myself to believe it and stood up. I had to return to the house. Had to go back to Mona.
Calm you fool, I scolded myself and started to walk back, quite shaken with what had transpired. Maybe it was time to get in touch with the others sooner than expected. What an end to our self-proclaimed honeymoon, I thought miserably and trotted through the falling snow.
Im curious to know which is the aesthetic/appareance you have for your Candy? Like She looks like you(with purple hair,ect..) or you have different Candies with different appareance for every LIs?
I have 9 Candys and they are all very different from each other, some were inspired by my own aesthetic tastes, others are completely different. I don’t usually create OCs now I give specific personalities, but in time I realised that I have a sort of headcanon for my girls. Ever watched Ocean’s 11? One day I started thinking, what if my Candys decided to rob a casino, what would their roles be? So let me introduce you my girls 😁 (in their winter/Christmas style)
Tetrakys1
Tumblr media
She’s my first girl, has a classical romantic goth style, lots of corsets and long skirts, jet black hair, eyes and clothes. This is basically what I looked like around when I started playing MCL. She’s Lys’ girl (technically on Rayan’s route now, but only for language convenience, I don’t consider her Rayan’s). She’s the boss, the head of my robbers gang 😃 the brains, she devices the plan and puts together the group.
Tetrakys 2
Tumblr media
When I realised I had completely fucked up my chances to get with Castiel because he was such an ass at the beginning in HSL (and at the same time I’d made it to episode 4 and instantly fell in love with Lys), I made another Candy and cheated my way through Pikachu’s heart. She’s the Harley Quinn of the group, punk/rock style, wears lots of red, uses seduction as a weapon, a little unstable, and a real talent with blades 👀 but also poisons, and guns (only when she has to).
Tetrakys3
Tumblr media
She’s Nath’s girl, very heavy metal (she’s had purple hair longer than I have), her colour palette includes mostly black and purple. She’s the hacker of the group. I.Q. of 170 and a real genius.
Now, these three ladies are all a combination of my own style and aesthetics. The next ones are very different from me.
Tetrakys4
Tumblr media
This was basically the account I had created to keep up with releases on Amour Sucré at the time the other servers were behind. She’s now Priya’s girlfriend (no ex). She’s the most feminine of my Candys, in a more traditional way. Very nurturing and maternal, lots of pastel colours (mostly white, pink and light blue). She’s the one who takes care of everyone else in the gang, the one who makes sure everyone is fed and healthy. She’d also be the medic when things inevitably turn to shit during the heist.
Tetrakys5
Tumblr media
She’s Kentin’s girl (currently on Hyun’s route, but again same thing as before applies, I don’t really consider her Hyun’s girlfriend). Her main colours are dark and light blue, and white. Her style is also pretty feminine, bon ton skits, heels and glasses. Almost like a hot secretary, which she kinda is, because she’s the studious, super organised one. She’s the one who takes care of all the practicalities of the heist. For example, they need a black van to escape? She already has three different options lined up and has already studied everything about the best wheels and escape routes. If you ever watched Magicians, she’s basically Alice Quinn in both style and personality.
Tetrakys6
Tumblr media
Armin’s girl. She had long light red/orange hair in HS and cut and dyed them pink when she went to uni. She’s kinda of a slob and spends her time lazying around, playing videogames or going out drinking. This is why she’s useful in the gang, she’s basically a social butterfly, she knows everyone everywhere, or she knows someone who knows someone. You need access to the casino? Leave it to her. Need to know about the cleaning company working there in order to infiltrate? She’ll be drinking buddy with half of the staff by the end of the week and gather all the deets. Also pretty good at pick-pocketing. She’s best friend with Tetrakys2 because they both use a sly but different way to get information and target people. She fights all the time with Tetrakys5 because she considers her a stuck-up, borderline OCD know-it-all, while Tetrakys5 thinks she just wastes time all day. Her style is punk/hobo/geek.
Now we get to my currently unactive Candys.
Tetrakys7
Tumblr media
She is who I consider Rayan’s girl (and will actually replay his route with her if we ever get the old crushes back). She has a mature and adult style and attitude. For some reason, her whole closet is mostly all shades of green. She’s a master forger, not only she could make an exact replica of any art piece, but she can disguise herself perfectly, blend with the environment and resemble anyone. She’s good friend and confidante with Tetrakys1.
Tetrakys8
Tumblr media
She is the muscle of the group. No subtlety at all, she’s very good at bursting her way through using weapons or fists. I created her because I wanted to test what would happen following Castiel’s route as Lysander’s ex. I didn’t even make it to episode 5 because the answer is NOTHING. It’s never acknowledged. Aesthetically I had Beyonce in mind when I created her, but style-wise she’s more sporty and ungraceful. She wears lots of gold, brown and orange.
Tetrakys9
Tumblr media
She’s Hyun’s girl and I’m going to use her to replay his route if we ever get the old crushes back. Her style is girly but also womanly, let’s say womanly cute. Lots of grey and yellow. She’s the explosive expert of the gang. Also quite agile, she sneaks into small spaces and makes them kaboooom.
And this is it. I probably gave more details than you asked for anon 😅 but I’d had this heist thing on my mind for a while now and had to share.
2020 Reading Challenge - E-Book Edition!
According to Amazon, I have exactly 294 e-books currently sitting in my Kindle library.
Granted, some of these books have been read and are being saved for a second (or third, or fourth) re-read, but when it comes down to it, that number is around 40 books, give or take.
Which means I still have over 250 books that need to be read.
And it’s not like I haven’t tried! There are plenty of titles that, when opened up, will go to the last place I left off - that being chapter 5, or maybe chapter 10. But sometimes life gets in the way. Or a sudden interest in another author. Or a new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. But whatever the reason may be, it’s over 250 books that haven’t been read. Challenge accepted!
For 2020, I commit to not buying any new books to add to my Kindle library (checking out books from the library is ok, because you’ve gotta support your local library!), and instead focus on the books I already have. So no addition of 99 cent books, or Kindle Unlimited books, or books that are suddenly 75% off. Only the books that I currently have.
As the reading commences, and after the book is finished, I’ll update my list to indicate what has been completed, along with the date purchased, and a short review (or a reason I just couldn’t finish it at all).
Below is the list for future reference - and to clarify my what my favorite genre is. Spoiler: it’s romance novels.
Have you used picrew or anything to make your ocs? What do they look like? If you dont have photos can you describe them?
Thanks for the utterly awesome ask!!
I’ve done a couple of picrews for Nyima since she’s my favourite (shhhh don’t tell the others) but she’s hard to get right since she’s blue and there’s not a lot of options for that.
@tiravi made a great piece of Nyima with her bf, Tundra, that I love to pieces and is the closest representation of how she looks. She so pretty They’re both characters in @illthdar‘s book series, first one, Illthdar: Guardians of Las, is out now ^=^
Tumblr media
Moving onto my precious derps for Brotherhood! Oh, have I got pretties for them! I’m not good with graphics and stuff. They end up looking clunky a lot of the time, but I love how this set turned out so I use them as title cards for extracts. Each one has the main couple, but they’re not the only ocs I’ve got. I’ve got sosososososo many! I have a whole file dedicated to profiles for this bunch of dorks lool
First up, Divinely Volatile!
Tumblr media
Ryang Ji-hoon and Fen Yueliang. Ji-hoon does actually look at lot like Choi Siwon who is his face claim, so much so that he gets mistaken for him a lot of the time. It’s a running joke since he’s an assassin and being recognised in any respect is bad for business, but he’s too vain to change his face. He has black hair and warm brown eyes that always look a little regretful.Yueliang has long straight black hair and darker brown eyes than Ji-hoon. She looks sharp and definitely is, but she’s also kind and a bit of a leap before she looks person, but luckily the amount of army training she’s had saves her from most disasters.
Next book planned is Deadly Lineage.
Tumblr media
Ambrose Fewtree and Vera Ucci. Ambrose is meant to look nondescript and forgettable because that’s how he operates best. He has reddish hair and grey/green eyes and he’s 5′11 and slender. His name is the most standout thing about him and even then most people forget it seconds after he leaves. And that includes the prosthetic left arm. Yup, he has a prosthetic because shit happens even to them. It’s super neat though with lots of hidden compartments for poisons, and he has more than one and wears them like fashion accessories. He’s a Bulgarian Romani and speaks a ton of languages - second only to Utamara Ndiaye.Vera has silver screen looks and a figure to match, which doesn’t fit in the age of instagram and contouring. She’s 5′4 with reddish brown hair that she hates because what even is that colour called? And she has hazel eyes. She’s Sardinian by blood, but grew up in Terni, Italy. (She’s also a princess, but more of that another time.)
Next up is Cold Snap.
Tumblr media
Tan Shun & Sarnai Ramchaa. Tan Shun knows he’s handsome and well dressed and also lethal af. He’s the Brotherhood’s best assassin and never puts a foot out of line. His father was a first generation Brotherhood, meaning he was born into it. The head of the Brotherhood, Hisakawa Kagegorou actually adopted Shun as his son because he was close to his father and thought Shun would have maximum potential. He does. He’s not the only adopted child of Kagegorou’s, but he’s the one he holds up to the others as an example. He’s 5′9 and wears lifts in his shoes to make himself taller. He’s got short black hair and obsidian coloured eyes.Sarnai is Mongolian and a photojournalist. She’s tough and no nonsense, but also fun and a bit reckless. She’s not the most beautiful woman around, but she’s got a certain something that attracts people to her. She’s 5′8 with fluffy black hair and greyish eyes.
Next up, Scorched Desire.
Tumblr media
Mohammed al Sadat & Sorcha Dunaid. Mo is from Egypt and he’s the most charming person ever. The scars on his face claim’s face are also present on his, but for different reasons, and they don’t damage his appeal one bit! He likes to say he’s the Egyptian James Bond, only better because he has a 100% success rate. He’s got neatly cropped black hair and deep brown eyes.Sorcha’s Scottish, with red hair and brown eyes, very pale skin and tall. She looks like a model - and used to be one - but she’s got so much intelligence and wicked wit that anyone who underestimates her regrets it.
Next up is Heavenly Kodachi!
Tumblr media
Hisakawa Tadamasa & Aurora McCabb. Tada’s Japanese and at 26 the youngest son of Hisakawa Kagegorou. He wears his black hair slicked back, but often loses control over it by the end of the day - has a habit of running his hands through it without realising. He has very dark brown eyes that look almost black and he’s short at 5′8, but isn’t vain enough to wear lifts like Shun.Aurora (Rory) is Native American, has tanned skin and short black hair that she bleaches and then dyes bright pink because pink. Her eyes are grey and she’s always very cheerful and happy, even when she’s not.
Nearly done - too many ocs, too many wips loolNext is Broken Oaths!
Tumblr media
Hisakawa Yoshihiro & Ina Howell. Yoshi is Tada’s older brother and far more neatly presented than his mess of a brother. His short black hair never misbehaves, and his obsidian eyes are always partially concealed by black framed glasses. He looks like a teacher - technically he is. He’s 5′9 and slender, like all the Hisakawa family.Ina hails from Wales, has milky-toned skin, mid-brown shoulder-length hair and blue eyes. She’s a doctor researching genetic diseases at a teaching and research hospital in Seattle.
Last but not least!Smudged Iron
Tumblr media
Calum McCabb & Glenn Oake. Calum isn’t an assassin, unlike all the other guys so far. He’s Aurora’s older brother, so he’s also Native American. His skin tone is darker than his sister’s, he has very long black hair that he plaits when he’s working, and grey eyes. He’s 5′10, broad and muscular from manual labour he does helping out on his family’s property and business or just from working out.Glenn is the only female assassin main character (there’s other minor ones). She’s got long, ginger hair, green eyes, pale skin and freckled. She’s tall and gangly looking and can pass for a boy if she makes an effort - it comes in handy.
WHEW! That’s all the main ocs from the series! It’s a lot, I know, but I love them all ^=^ and I didn’t even get round to the side characters!
Utamara Ndiaye, Anna Orlov, Baracus van Dien, Gi Joo-won, Blane Everheart, Magnolia Everheart, Ghenha Reece, Ifana Reece, Lewys Howell, Fen Chen, Yang Yawen, Baek Hyun, Ryang Jong-su, Kim Ha-yun, Ryang Hye-jin, Cai Hao, Airdyle Boxer, Roger Oake,  Cassidy Boxer, Victor Cole, McKerrick McCabb, Quinn McCabb, Adaline Moore, Alorah McCabb, Sechen Ramchaa, Batbayar Yamaat, Altansarnai Taijuid, Khenbish Daguur, Ana Breban, Iulien Breban, Laura Fewtree, Marku Fewtree, Paul Fewtree, Ilena Fewtree, Sammie Fewtree, Grey Fewtree, Tristan Fewtree, Mara Fewtree, Nina Fewtree, Archduke Galileo Amici, Ettore Amici, Grandduchess Claudia Amici Capozzi, Vyas Noon, Maurizio Motta, Bella Motta, Alicia Belittore, Muminah al Sadat, Domhnull MacCearraich, Belias Anwielder, Go Eren, Iyawa Adamu, Akil al Sadat, Hisakawa Kagegorou, Hisakawa Sadaharu, Hisakawa Hideki, James Baker, Nacht Graben, Nahm Seojun
and this list is still growing and I have face claims for every single person on here, and profiles.
Yes, I’m totally insane lool
The Refrigerator Monologues by Catherynne M. Valente Review
“What matters is entertainment. Eternity takes forever. The infinite expanse of time just does not know when to quit. The dead fear boredom the way mortals fear death.”
Tumblr media
Where do I even start? If you read comics, especially the Marvel and DC variety, then chances are, you’re familiar with names like Gwen Stacy, Jean Grey, Harley Quinn, Barbara Gordon, Mera, Karen Page to name just a few (the list is disappointingly long). What’s the one thing all of these characters have in common? They were unceremoniously dumped in favour of the main male characters’ narrative, their growth. Gail Simone first gave this trope a name, The Woman in Refrigerators (she actually started a website by this name). I can’t talk about this book without talking about this trope. There is literally a comic where the male protagonist’s girl friend is stuffed into the refrigerator and left for him to find.
“I belong in the refrigerator. Because the truth is, I’m just food for a superhero. He’ll eat up my death and get the energy he needs to become a legend.”
I can’t even begin to sum up all of the reason why this trope infuriates me. The women in most superhero comics, films, television shows are reduced to side plots, actually, they’re plot devices, their only reason to exist is to move the plot forward and they do this even with their deaths. It didn’t matter that a vast majority of women consuming this media were uncomfortable with the underlying message; a woman is disposable and is only useful in propping up the man in her life. The rage is justified and it’s not just limited to comics. How many times have you seen a female character die or suffer some horrible fate in a film or TV show but it’s all about the impact on the man. The most recent and well known example I can think of is the rape of Sansa Stark by Ramsay Bolton. It wasn’t about what was happening to her, it was about finally giving Theon the necessary motivation to break free of Ramsay‘s grip.
If you’re someone who was infuriated at the treatment of these women, then The Refrigerator Monologues is exactly what the doctor recommended! Like many of us, Valente was sickened by the trope and the last straw was the death of Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-man 2 (that one still makes me see red) The film sets out to lull the audience into a sense of security. They’ve built up her character, they already killed her father in the first film, she’s brilliant in her own right, the makers of the film know that her death wasn’t appreciated in its comicbook version. All of these things told the audience, that Gwen Stacy is safe, she’ll make it out alive. We saw the film only to have our hope ripped out with her death in the final act of the film, and it felt cheap.
Well, unlike the vast majority of us, Valente actually did something about it. She couldn’t redo Gwen Stacy’s story or any of the women who had been treated so harshly by comic book writers (copyright problems), so she wrote about characters who bore eerie similarities to them and told their stories and told it from their perspective.
“We call ourselves the hell hath club. There’s a lot of us. We’re mostly very beautiful and very well-read and very angry. We have seen some shit.”
The Hell Hath Club is an exclusive club with limited members, they meet at the local club run by a gargoyle called Neil and they share their stories. They are the protagonists of their own stories and they tell you about that superhero you’re so impressed with. They paint a different picture than the one you’re used to seeing. That superhero, you’re so impressed by, he’s insecure, he’s vain, hes full of himself and sees nothing beyond his own ambition. These women were the cautionary tales, these were the mistakes, these were the women who set them on their path, with their names reduced to being a footnote. You perhaps knew their names, but you didn’t know them, their dreams and their ambitions. There was no place for it.
While reading about the various women, Valente puts enough clues, that if you’re familiar with comics and characters, you’d be able to identify them. There’s Paige Embry (Gwen Stacy), Julia Ash (Jean Grey), Pauine Ketch (Herleen Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn), Blue Bayou (Mera, Queen of Atlantis), Daisy Green (Karen Page) and finally Samantha Dane (Alexandra DeWitt, she has the dubious honour of literally being the woman in the refrigerator) In Deadtown, these women finally have a space for their own lives, their stories. They’re done being pawns, they’re done being used, they’re done playing second fiddle. Most importantly, they find each other, a sisterhood of women of understanding and acceptance.
“What’s the difference between being dead and having a boyfriend? Death sticks around.”
This book is so engaging and well written that it’s close to impossible to set it aside. It’s incredibly clever especially with some of the names. Case in point, a character called Retcon. Retcon is a fairly common term in comics, it refers to when writers change the character, their appearance or their powers, their origin or their narrative arc. Valente creates a character called Retcon to call out those times when a character is changed so that they fit neatly into a box. I especially appreciated this.
It’s also a short read, so it doesn’t take long to get through it. Despite it’s length (or lack thereof) Valente does a brilliant job of really putting you inside the story that the women are narrating, she makes sure that you share in their anger, frustration and heartbreak. And more than that, she gives a fitting conclusion to these amazing characters who were so callously used and then dumped. As someone who read and loved comics for as long as I can remember, I didn’t know just how much I needed this book till I actually read it.
“Never give up your voice for a man, you fucking guppy.”
Romancelandia you don’t have to ask I’m just gonna say it anyway~
Original Post Here
Barbara Cartland: Favourite author?
Courtney Milan.
Alisha Rai: Favorite era? (i.e. when they were written, not when set)
Current! I’m ecstatic to see how much more punk the romance novel genre has become lately- so many authors explicitly talking about race and class and gender and mental health and neurodivergence in so many interesting ways. Independent publishing opening up entirely new avenues which were not recommended for traditional publications. It’s exciting and wonderful.
Eve Dangerfield: Favourite setting for historicals?
Not sure if my opinion matters here because I have read books from very few eras? I think my preferences have moved to mid-to-late Victorian era for England-based books, but what I really want more of is historicals on other (non North American) continents. I badly want to do a romance in Historical India that is not about Englishmen, for example. Like a Muslim and Hindu falling in love during the Aurangazeb era, maybe.
Anne Mather: Favourite contemporary setting/sub-genre
Again, I haven’t really read enough to form a nuanced opinion- when I look for contemporaries, my first priority used to be “does this make me laugh?” Which is um- a relic of a bygone era, because that used to be the only thing I wanted from contemporaries.
Right now, I try to get read more of diverse romance in contemporary eras. Again, including non-American/English nationalities.
Georgette Heyer: Third or first person tense?
Either will do. It’s not really a factor in how much I enjoy a story.
Lisa Kleypas: Hero/ine you’d most like to date & Jane Austen: Hero/ine you’d most like to be friends with
Same answer to both of the above categories. I’ll take anyone who I think is a rational person who forgives misunderstandings ans does not try to actively make them. I’m not really that picky.
Amanda Quick: Hero/ine you most relate to
At the time when I first read it as a dramatic early twenties person, Minerva Lane from Courtney Milan’s The Duchess War spoke to me. There was a lot in there about fear and having to push yourself down fro the sake of survival that was similar to my life back then. I cried a lot when I read that book.
More recently, I really wanted to snuggle up to Verity Plum from Cat Sebastian’s A duke in Disguise because her feelings of independence and placing it above pretty much everything else her life is... yeah. A lot of what Verity says sounds intimately familiar.
Julie Anne Long: Historical or contemporary?
Historical. Given a choice between two books which are similarly positioned in terms of tropes I like and hate, I’ll pick a historical every time.
Mariana Zapata: Open or closed door sex scenes? & Anne Hampson: Erotic or clean romances?
Ninety percent of the time I’m thoroughly disinterested in the sex scenes, and sometimes I am actively annoyed at the many pages of boning happening while the protagonists barely have an emotional connection. That said, there are plenty books which have no sex scenes where I am reduced to gross sobbing because GODDAMMIT THERE IS TOO MUCH SEXUAL TENSION IN THE AIR GIVE ME BONING.
I am still thirsty about Jo Beverley’s The Unwilling Bride. There was so much sexual tension and growth and Lucien was hot as hell but there was no sex scene. //grumbles
Elizabeth Hoyt: Paranormal or science fiction?
I haven’t read that much SF romance, but I’m going to pick it anyway because the usual tropes associated with Werewolves/Vampires bug the crap out of me.
Nalini Singh: Favourite tropes
Both the protagonists have problems with stakes, and one is not there to manic pixie the other. Protagonists have relationships (non-romantic) outside of the romance. Subversions and reversions of gender norms. Banter and Snark. Character tries very very hard to not be emotionally vulnerable, but goddammit there are these stupid feelings.
Alyssa Cole: Least favourite tropes
Prolonged Miscommunication. Slut shaming, especially when coupled with I Have Had So Much Sex and I am So Experienced hypocrisy. Gratuitous sex with no emotional connection. Protagonists immediately throwing over all other friends/family/loved ones for the sake of their new romantic interest. False competence in female characters which immediately get thrown to the wind when the romantic interest comes on scene (Ahem. Never Judge a lady By Her Cover.)
Rose Lerner: Favourite / Least favourite series
Nope.
Sandra Marton: Favourite romantic non-romance or love story
Unspoken Trilogy, by Sarah Rees Brennan. It is in part a fascinating exploration of privacy in a relationship- most of the rest of it is about friendships and platonic relationships. There is also a cult of sorcerers trying to take over the world via human sacrifice but I continue to insist that’s mostly just setting information.
Skye Warren: Any problematic faves?
I have a depressingly large soft spot for anything funny, and I will forgive a lot of despised tropes if a book makes me laugh. I’m easy.
Specific examples: Until You (Judith McNaught), Dragon Shifter Series (Katie MacCalister).
Ainsley Booth: Position on HEAs
I’m cool with those.
Abby Green: Position on HFNs
I like these better than HEAs, because the characters I like tend to be difficult and also fighting various difficult scenarios so it’s far more likely that more problems will pop up in their lives than not.
Kristen Ashley: Position on the “romance novels are feminist” discourse
Conflicted. I think many romances are feminist, but there are an equal number or more which are patently not. Like all other genres, it has to be judged on a book by book basis, not for the genre as a whole.
Carla Kelly: Position on the “calling romance novels trashy is problematic” discourse
Yes. Outright dismissal of an entire genre is just dumb.
Diana Palmer: Position on the “are romance novels porn” discourse
Ha, no. Porn is porn.
Johanna Lindsey: Position on the “romance novels represent the female gaze” discourse
Yes, I guess? In many romances the way men are portrayed is markedly different from the way they are seen in other genres. Again, this is not a universal constant- all romances do not show men in the exact same way.
Also, it is hard to find any other genre with a larger proportion of characters, viewpoints and conflicts centered around women so there’s that.
Mary Jo Putney: Position on the “calling romances without sex ‘clean’ or ‘sweet’ is implicitly slut shaming romances with sex” discourse?
Yes. Just call them romances without sex. What are we, the moral police?
Cara McKenna: What’s your hot take on the “forced seduction” trope?
I understand the time and place where there scenes were popular, and the social norms which prompted them. I’m still uncomfortable with them and there are may things I’d rather read about so I avoid them.
Abigail Barnette: Opinion of Fifty Shades of Grey
Never read it, don’t plan to. Like I said, sex is not really my thing.
Tessa Bailey: Opinion of Twilight
I gobbled these books like a maniac when I first read them and there is a lot of pure entertainment in there and there is so much emotion. That said, they are not quite as interesting on re-reads. :(
Kathleen E. Woodiwiss: Opinion of Pride & Prejudice
I’m not comfortable with the prose, which means i prefer to watch/read adaptations. Most notably the Lizzie Bennet Diaries.
Lynne Graham: Opinion of Harlequin Mills & Boon
Meh.
Tessa Dare: Opinion of bodice rippers
I mean, I would be fine if there wasn’t so much of people causing their own problems by refusing to talk to each other.
Sylvia Day: Opinion of Fabio
I did not even know he was a real person till like- recently.
Roni Loren: Opinion of male romance authors
Yes please. Particularly if they are writing under female pseudonyms. With this, we are getting the exact same thing that female authors did and have to go through- a forced perspective from people oft he other gender. That can only lead to more nuance and acceptance and I am all about that.
Courtney Milan: All-time favourite romance novel & Jana Aston: Favourite contemporary romance & Judith McNaught: Favourite historical romance
Nope.
Alexa Riley: Physical or digital books?
Digital. I tend to make a lot of highlights and notes and that holds up much better with ebooks.
E.L. James: Internal drama or external drama
Characters who are not getting together/along because they can’t communicate with each other are better off not being with each other in the first place. So if that’s what internal drama is then I prefer the external type.
Sarah MacLean: Favourite heroine/s & Maya Rodale: Least favourite heroine/s & Penny Reid: Favourite hero/s & Megan Hart: Least favourite hero/s & Stephenie Meyer: Favourite and least favourite couple/s
I have types rather than specific examples. Most of it has already been detailed out in the tropes questions.
Beverly Jenkins: First romance novel you ever read
Almost Heaven, by Judith McNaught.
Sabrina Jeffries: How long have you been reading romance novels?
14 years or thereabouts.
Loretta Chase: Last romance novel you read
A Duke in Disguise by Cat Sebastian. I’m currently reading An Unconditional Freedom (Alyussa Cole) and Earthrise (MCA Hogarth).
Christina Lauren: Do you need to start a series from the beginning, or can you just dive in anywhere?
Anywhere is fine.
Chuck Tingle: How strong does your HEA have to be?
Not much. See the HFN answer.
Julia Quinn: Underrated author/s & Mary Balogh: Most overrated author/s & Violet Winspear: Most overrated book/s & Sara Craven: Most underrated book/s & Susan Elizabeth Phillips: Best romance by a debut author? & Madison Faye: Favourite romance by a non-romance author
Error Report: Cannot Compute, not enough data.
Nora Roberts: Least favourite hero and heroine archetypes
Eloisa James: What are you reading when you’re not reading romance?
Fantasy, Science Fiction, YA, Comics, Mysteries, Fanfiction, Nonfiction. I’ll read anything.
Teresa Medeiros: Other media property you wish was a romance novel
Idk what this means?
Laura Lee Guhrke: Last romance novel you DNFed
I think it was Elizabeth Kingston’s A Fallen Lady? Which was actually a GOOD book and I skipped ahead to scenes I really wanted to see and those scenes made me cry but also... there was not much about the romance itself that I was really interested in. I loved the heroine to death though.
Cat Sebastian: Alpha, Gamma, or Beta heroes?
Depends on how they are written, but I confess an Alpha is so easily made into an irredeemable dipshit.
Jeannie Lin: Ideal hero and heroine archetypes
Family-minded hero stressed out about taking care of his family. Independent, business minded heroine.
Helen Hoang: Sexually experienced or inexperienced heroines? & Lucy Monroe: Sexually experienced or inexperienced heroes?
Experienced heroines and inexperienced heroes. Play against the type!
Lorraine Heath: When you choose a book do you look for tropes, plots or authors?
Authors, then Tropes. I barely pay attention to plots.
C.D. Reiss: Puns in titles: 👍 or 👎?
YES. I have picked up books purely because of punny titles.
Emily Bronte: Favourite cover designs/illustrations & Maya Banks: Least favourite cover design
I suck a remembering covers so this question is going to get skipped~
Penny Jordan: What would you like to see more of in romance novels?
Diversity and cliche subversions.
Lauren Blakey: What would you like to see less of in romance novels?
Overplayed cliches played in the same way again and again. Relationships based entirely on sex.
Betty Neels: What do you think are the high and low points of the genre?
Highs: Romancelandia is probably the most intelligent and nuanced fandom I have ever been a part of and I have been a part of many fandoms. The genre is very, very diverse and there are so many experiments going on in the fringes. Questions and stories about the emotional components of relationships can never get old because there are too many permutations to explore in a few lifetimes.
Lows: The core of the romance novel industry is still trying desperately to hold on to tropes and themes of older days, many of which are regressive.
Jill Shalvis: Finish this sentence: “Romance novels are__________”
complex social commentaries.
Let’s Talk #DCSuperHeroGirls
Normally, animated superhero adaptations avoid sharing similar titles unless they are about a titular character or team such as Batman or the Teen Titans. Then there is DC Super Hero Girls, which is the name of both an ongoing YouTube and upcoming Cartoon Network series.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For my thoughts on both shows, feel free to keep reading. There will be spoilers.
DC Super Hero Girls is a toy brand by DC and Mattel aimed mainly at a young female audience that highlights the former company’s female heroes and villains. It could be seen as their attempt to compete with similar franchises such as My Little Pony: Equestria Girls and Monster High. All three franchises have one thing in common: Their characters attend high school.
Tumblr media
The 2015 YouTube series centers around several heroes and villains attending Super Hero High. The school’s principal is Amanda Waller, while the teachers are a mixture of heroes and villains. The titular main team consists of Batgirl/Barbara Gordon, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Bumblebee, Poison Ivy, Katana, and Harley Quinn. Throughout many episodes, the group meet and confront multiple characters such as Beast Boy, Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and Jessica Cruz, The Riddler, Lena Luthor, Raven, and Krypto.
Tumblr media
What makes the show unique from other DC productions is how some of the villains are shown as being friends with the heroes. It is an interesting creative choice that mostly serves to highlight some of DC’s famous villains like Harley, Ivy, and Katana.
Tumblr media
At the same time, it also shows that they may have wanted to highlight the villains far more than their other heroes such as Miss Martian, Black Canary, Wonder Girl, or Zatanna.
Tumblr media
The show originally highlighted standard high school or teenage conflicts but in a superhero way, such as the characters winning awards, competing in sports, romance, and homework. By the third season, it mostly became a standard superhero series where the characters balance out their school work while also dealing with the bad guys around the school.
It has become popular enough to not only last five seasons on YouTube but also garner comic books, a half-hour TV special on Boomerang, and multiple direct-to-video films, some of which are based on the LEGO version of the franchise.
Tumblr media
If I had to point out any flaws, it would have to be how many heroes and villains are shown as either teenagers or faculty members. The show appears to heavily imply that the only adult heroes around are Batman and Superman (neither of which appear in the web series). Similarly, only a few villains are shown to be adults such as Granny Goodness, Firefly, and Trigon. This situation is reminiscent of how the 2003 Teen Titans series never showed or referenced any adult heroes aside from Batman. Like with that show...
youtube
The flash animation is somewhat inconsistent. The first four seasons look relatively decent for a YouTube series and are vastly superior to Warner Bros’ previous flash-based series Gotham Girls.
Tumblr media
Sadly, the recent fifth season looks terrible by the odd lack of shadows, static backgrounds, and limited character movement.
Tumblr media
The LEGO-based productions look great by comparison, mostly due to the high quality CG animation used for that brand’s direct-to-video films and TV specials.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A major positive worth noting is the show's wide range of voice actors, some of which are reprising their roles from past series. Mae Whitman, for example, played Batgirl for the series’ first four seasons after having previously voiced the character on Batman: The Brave and The Bold. Other actors reprising their roles include Josh Keaton as Hal (from Green Lantern: The Animated Series), Tara Strong as both Harley (from the Batman Arkham games) and Raven,  Khary Payton as Cyborg, Greg Cipes as Beast Boy, and Hynden Walch as both Starfire and Blackfire (from Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go!).
Tumblr media
There is nothing offensive or insulting about the web series. It is clearly not aimed at a general audience. Longtime fans of any of the featured heroes and villains might find it either degrading or disappointing to see them just going to high school rather than fighting each other.
Tumblr media
It has been able to coexist with DC’s other films and series as just another franchise featuring their characters. While it may have inconsistent animation and a questionable premise, it is definitely worth a watch just to hear the voice actors reprise their roles in a different setting.
As the web series is entering what may be its fifth and final season, the Cartoon Network reboot has already made its debut by “The Late Batsby” short currently being presented before showings of Teen Titans Go! To The Movies.
Tumblr media
(As a side note, I Highly Recommend that hilarious film.)
The upcoming reboot is from Lauren Faust, the series creator of Discovery Family’s My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
Tumblr media
Based solely on the short, it heavily resembles her previous DC production Super Best Friends Forever, a series of comedic shorts featuring Batgirl (Tara Strong, reprising her role from The New Batman Adventures), Supergirl (Nicole Sullivan of MADtv), and Wonder Girl/Donna Troy (Grey Griffin) which originally aired in 2012 as part of the short-lived DC Nation block on Cartoon Network.
Tumblr media
In fact, "The Late Batsby” is a remake of the short “Time Waits For No Girl”. The alterations made for the new short were swapping out Poison Ivy for Mr. Freeze, giving Supergirl and Freeze each a line of dialogue, and introducing the entire team.
Tumblr media
Strong and Sullivan are reprising their respective roles of Batgirl and Supergirl for the reboot, while Griffin will reprise her role of Wonder Woman from the web series. The rebooted team retains Bumblebee from the original group but also adds the aforementioned Jessica and Zatanna.
Aside from the title and voice actors, it appears that the Cartoon Network reboot will feature a completely different story.
Tumblr media
The team now solely consists of heroes, Commissioner Gordon is once again unaware of his daughter’s secret identity, and the new animation style looks far more fluid than the web series.
While the reboot will premiere sometime later this year, the web series is still currently streaming new episodes. The franchise’s social media accounts have called the reboot team “the New DC Super Hero Girls” and the fifth season premiere began with a teaser for “The Late Batsby”. It seems unlikely that the web series will continue past its current fifth season and presumably end prior to the TV show’s premiere.
Tumblr media
On the bright side, Cartoon Network will soon be airing two DC animated series for the first time since 2013, the other show being Teen Titans Go!
Tumblr media
The web series is currently streaming on YouTube. The reboot will premiere sometime later this year on Cartoon Network.
Tumblr media
Until next time, thank you for reading!
The Refrigerator Monologues by Catherynne M. Valente and Annie Wu
by Carrie S · Jun 25, 2017 at 3:00 am ·
GENRE: Science Fiction/Fantasy, Literary Fiction, Comic
Here are the main things you need to know about The Refrigerator Monologues: it is intense, painful, and triumphant. It is NOT a romance. Readers would benefit from some familiarity with common comic book tropes while reading. Also, it’s feminist as fuck.
The book derives its inspiration from the Women in Refrigerators website created by Gail Simone in 1999. Simone launched a conversation that is still going strong about the frequency with which female characters are killed, injured, raped, or otherwise brutalized in comics for no purpose other than to fuel a man’s story. The trope name comes from the unfortunate girlfriend of Kyle Raynor (the Green Lantern) who comes home one night to find his girlfriend murdered and her body stuffed in his refrigerator. This leads Kyle to finally fully assume his role as Green Lantern as he seek vengeance and then goes on fight other battles, now secure in his superhero role.
The monologues are kicked off by Paige Embry, who introduces the reader to Deadtown (the afterlife for comics characters) and some of the women who live there. Paige is clearly inspired by the character of Gwen Stacey (Peter Parker, AKA Spiderman’s, first girlfriend). Paige is, for lack of a better term, the president of the Hell Hath Club. This club consists of women who have died (sometimes permanently, sometimes temporarily) as a result of their association with male superheroes:
There’s a lot of us. We’re mostly very beautiful and very well read and very angry. We have seen some shit. Our numbers change-a few more this week, a few less next, depending on if anyone gets called up to the big game. You can’t keep your lunch date if some topside science jockey figures out how to make a zombie-you. We’re totally understanding about that kind of thing. She’ll be back. They always come back. Zombies never last, power sputters out, and clones don’t have the self-preservation God gave a toddler in a stove shop.
In subsequent chapters, different members of the Hell Hath Club tell their stories. Comic book fans will recognize characters inspired by, among others, Harley Quinn (Batman), Mera (Aquaman), Jean Grey/Phoenix/Dark Phoenix (X-Men), and Karen Page (Daredevil). The key word here is “inspired.” Each character has their own story distinct from any inspiration. This allows the author to explore themes that might not otherwise make sense. For example, to my knowledge Harley Quinn has never been killed off, but through the character loosely based on her the author can explore themes of emotional and physical abuse, manipulation, denial, and obsession.
In theory, anyone should be able to enjoy this book regardless of their knowledge about comics. However, it’s best enjoyed if you have some familiarity with the tropes being deconstructed, which is a very pompous way of saying FUCK YOU, JOKER, YOU ABUSIVE ASSHAT. We comics readers have a vast reservoir of rage just waiting to be tapped, and this book taps it while still being thoughtful and human.
This is a hard book to read. Stories include loss, betrayal, and exploitation. But it’s also a book about sisterhood, agency, and owning your own story. Sometimes I wanted to cry while reading the book. Sometimes I wanted to scream. At the end, I wanted a framed print of the final illustration by Annie Wu, a “Hell Hath” T-Shirt (would that either of those things were available) and a chance to smash the patriarchy (call your elected officials, y’all). It’s a troubling and triumphant book and anyone who celebrates feminism in comics and good old female rage will love it.
[Fi] Bloody Fi purge! Your inferior cousin needs some dominant and auxiliary guidance.
To preface: I love you XNFPs and unbeknownst to me, always have. For one, it's been edifying and validating to see some of my all-time favorite humans (writers, musicians, actors, thinkers, etc...) being typed as XNFP. Even before learning about typology and gaining a deeper understanding of Jungian cognitive functions, I was actively working on (what I now know to be) Fi development because a lack of it had reaped much unnecessary hardship onto my life. Therefore, I think that conscientious journey led me to people that embodied their Fi with vigor and authenticity and helped me get in touch with my own, for which I am eternally grateful. And now on to the issue at hand (this is a long read but I'm trying to give relatively detailed information that might help you to help me): For a little under a decade, since high school, I've had an on and off, pseudo-platonic, quasi-romantic, eternal soulmate, occasional f-buddy relationship with this ebullient, effervescent, deeply insightful, dreamy eyed, pixie warrior priestess (INFP) that, in my relatively short life, has always stood a mile apart from the "Gone Girl/Cersei Lannister/Elle Driver/Cookie Lyon/Harley Quinn/Akasha, Queen of the Damned" fare I've usually attracted [strike]...and been equally attracted to[/strike]. Our first interaction was a classroom debate turned bloodstained duel to the death over the ethics of eating animals (I swear on the atom, this is not a utilization of an NFP stereotype lol). Something clicked (energy + angst + lust + social isolation + troubled pasts), and from there, this happened > I'd never before intimately known someone who had the chasm of incongruously layered emotionality she possessed--ostensibly she experienced feelings in a plethora of shades from eggshell, hunter green, and cobalt blue to neon yellow and not only that, could verbalize them as such. Meanwhile, I only had ready access to basic black, white, red (all degrees of rage), grey, and at my best, a metallic gold. Though wholly confounding, maddening and taxing to me, I had never felt more woke and unchained and set free. It was intoxicating to experience a wider array, a more diverse palette of feelings. I obviously never reached her depths, patterns and colors, but even experiencing a trifle more than I was previously accustomed to felt like a massive, tectonic plate moving, internal shift. She saw me shed an actual, solitary tear once under extreme duress but in better times, just by staring into my eyes and smiling on a whim she could easily make me mist up with soul purifying relief, which was a gargantuan, almost incomprehensible feat for lesser mortals and I truly honestly never before felt so connected to someone on a level that was nigh impossible to articulate in a rational way. And particularly when she was sad and grieving (probably because of me), which often left me feeling inadequate because I was too emotionally dumb and powerless to effectively help--which, in and of itself, beset me with very real, very potent, personal "trigger" landmines. Especially back then, I neither spoke of nor experienced emotions with great affect. I understood them cognitively and intellectually, but to actually engage them with my "heart" felt like a blind man wading neck-deep in cement. My take on our biggest, most immediate problem aside from all the other reasons this union was likely to fail? We just spoke completely different cognitive "languages (Ni vs Si? Dom Fi vs Inferior Fi? Dom Te vs. Inferior Te?)" that always created endless communication gaffs, roadblocks and nuclear disasters. For example: Pixie: "Did I see you at Starbucks earlier today with Cersei f%#king Lannister when you were supposed to be at a study group?" Me: "That was the study group." Pixie: *heart imploding with the force of a billion suns* "Why didn't you tell me that?" Me: *blistering dispassion with a hint of exasperated bemusement* "Look, our past relationship is just that, in the past. You have nothing to feel insecure about. It was harmless, only work. You know I love you." Pixie: "That's not what I asked you! Stop lying and trying to hide and sugarcoat things! You know I hate that brother f%#king bitch! Why didn't you tell me you were going to see her? Me: *voice box shredding like the Hulk's Capri pants* "Because that was fucking irrelevant. She was put in a group with me! Her strategy to double-cross Dany and Jon will fall to shit, for Christ sakes. Are you happy now? You always focus on the wrong thing!" She always wanted to know the exact details behind what actually happened in a very direct, matter of fact way (perhaps to refine the many possibilities she generated for why I would withhold supposedly important information from her), whereas I always instinctively and immediately went to why I did something or the "why" concerning the underlying problem, because the "why," the deeper meaning (should and theoretically, in my mind) supersedes anything else, and especially when problem solving and coming up with a viable solution imo. Ultimately, it just didn't work. Idiotically yet idealistically, we wouldn't let that stop us. We broke up and got back together a few times before deciding that we were better off as this nebulous, ill defined glob of corrupted love and unresolved daddy/mommy abandonment issues that maybe one day might actually not fall apart at the seams just as it's getting good again. The whole idea and its subsequent execution was dysfunctional, unhealthy, ridiculous and plain ol stupid, but I gather this was us trying to be intense, brooding and deep. Dunno exactly. We'd go on to see other people and sometimes, in between relationships, link up again. Usually we couldn't reach a year and a half before we wound up back in the other's arms/bed. Moving on. She experienced a tragedy (by her standards) about 3 years ago while I was literally on the opposite side of the planet and whereas I would've normally come flying to her aid with an S on my chest, I made the conscious choice not to. Already enduring my ascent to power (lol) being stifled because of my brokedown Fi usage as it pertains to my burgeoning career, I resented yet another unwieldy force (Pixie) possessing that type of influence over me as well; I defiantly chose self-interest above anyone or anything else (like I'm instinctively wont to do, right or wrong, good or bad). She kept trying to reach me to the point of flooding all of our communication channels with emotional spam (from childish antics to vile, unforgivable diatribes). After a while, I felt bad, decided to reach out to her but was ignored for 2.5 years straight. That had never happened before--it broke our unspoken rule, which devastated me more than I realized. I grieved (rather poorly by over-utilizing Se), but eventually tucked it away, moved on and focused on work. I figured we were never meant to be anyway but that I would still love her (from afar) and wish her the best regardless. Lo and behold, she called me last night out of nowhere, drunkenly seeping concentrated pain, spewing regret, betrayal, rejection, abandonment, hatred and then love for me. She says, through tears, that she's still in love with me and wants to know if there's any chance for an "us." I felt terrible and thoroughly confused. I tried to listen and be supportive (my Te is completely inept at properly addressing/handling others' intense feelings)--I just don't naturally "speak" emotions in an unforced, compassionate, empathetic, organic manner. I'm better than I used to be but I was blindsided, taken aback and don't think I did much good. Honestly, I don't need or want this in my life right now; I'm so engrossed in my work and achieving my goals and going by what she was saying over the phone, she's still stuck in past patterns of dysfunction. I don't want that anymore. But I truly do care for her and want her to be well and happy--just not with me and not right now, at least. I hate that she is suffering but I don't know what, if anything, I should/could do to remedy this. And now, finally, here are my questions to you smart, capable, helpful people*/**: 1. When you are expressing your feelings (whether "good" or "bad"), what is the best way to respond to this that will make you feel heard, understood and validated? 2. When overcome with negative feelings that seem too powerful and unrelenting, how do you self-soothe (using safe + legal methods)? 3. Is there anyway I can speak my truth and tell her honestly where I'm at and what I want at this point in my life without further hurting her? Should I do it regardless or is it better to wait for when she's more stable? 4. Tangent, now that I have you > How do you know what you value? (Is that a stupid question? lol) I think I know what I value ("money-power-respect," knowledge, meaning/substance, fairness, justice, individuality) but it can be hard to finesse on the spot (when asked) and not come off as crude and unrefined. Do you spend a lot of time going over in your mind what is meaningful and significant to you, or do you just know somehow? (like how I seemingly "know" and intuit stuff via introverted intuition) To those who made it all the way to the end, thank you. I would really really really really appreciate some help. I have very few people in my life I trust to give me strong emotions related advice and none of them are XNFPs. Their emotions are just as trash and poorly developed as mine are. lol *Obviously, there are a multitude of ways that people respond to these things that exclude type but I'm looking for any and all variations, particularly from XNFPs and anyone else who can provide insight. **And I will shamelessly bump this thread until I obtain the breadth of insight I seek. :shrug: https://www.typologycentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=93755&goto=newpost&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr
