Drinks of Doom: Pumpkin Spice Haunt Cocoa
What could be better than a little cauldron full of haunt cocoa? A little cauldron full of pumpkin spice haunt cocoa on Halloween night!
I’ve actually got more than one recipe this time around. There’s my “melt chocolate chips in almond milk” version, but I’ve got an alternate recipe using…hot cocoa mix? Yep. There’s so many different ways you can make a pumpkin spice hot cocoa, and these are just two examples!
I strongly recommend using canned pumpkin puree for pumpkin spice hot cocoas and lattes as opposed to fresh. This is because the canned puree of Dickinson pumpkins have a better texture that lends itself well to pumpkiny drinks, while freshly made puree from the small pie pumpkins you find at grocery stores this time of year have a lumpier texture and lend themselves better to food and baked goods, from pie to soup to cakes to stew.
It’s also more convenient to use pre-made pumpkin pie spice, since that makes it easier to measure, but you can also make your own if you don’t have any. Just combine about 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon with 1/8 teaspoon ginger, and a sprinkle of ground cloves and nutmeg. That’s enough for one serving, but if you need more, you can double the amounts suggested.
Which recipe will you pick? Whichever you choose, these tricks will lead to a real treat!
PUMPKIN SPICE HAUNT COCOA:
VER 1 (Serves 2):
1 and 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
1/3 cup milk chocolate chips
2 tablespoons canned pumpkin puree
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 pinch salt
1/4 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
Heat almond milk in a saucepan over medium heat.
Add chocolate chips and whisk, melting the chocolate whole stirring to ensure the chocolate doesn’t burn.
Add in pumpkin, vanilla, salt, and pumpkin pie spice. Keep on stirring until everything is combined and chocolate is melted.
Pour into mugs. If desired, top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice.
VER 2 (Serves 1):
2 tablespoons pumpkin puree
1 cup milk or unsweetened almond milk
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1 packet hot cocoa mix
4 oz hot water
Heat water in a kettle. Add hot cocoa mix into a 12 oz mug.
Combine pumpkin, milk, vanilla, and pumpkin pie spice in a small microwave safe pitcher or creamer. Microwave in 3 second intervals, stirring in between, until milk is heated and steaming. Keep an eye on the milk mixture and stop the microwave before the milk gets to hot and starts to bubble (it can explode if overheated in the microwave). A (likely better) alternative is to combine pumpkin, milk, vanilla and pumpkin pie spice together in a small saucepan over medium heat, and stir occasionally while heating the mixture until steaming.
Pour milk mixture into the mug with hot cocoa mix and add the 4 ounces of hot water.
Stir until fully combined and if desired, top with whipped cream and pumpkin pie spice.
🎃 HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! 🎃

This thing's not gonna roast itself...
Tumblr media
This is for a Middle Kingdoms recipe (but this approach is also long established on our version of Earth). Pumpkin or butternut squash slices are tossed in olive oil, laid out in the pans and sprinkled with chili flakes and a little salt. Whole peeled garlic cloves get inserted here and there; the whole business then sprinkled with oregano (though in the Kingdoms they'd be more likely to go for sage or thyme). A few thyme sprigs are scattered here and there. Then everything goes into the oven and gets roasted at 200° C / 400° F for about 40 minutes.
Some people like to add small chunks of feta or similar sheep's milk cheese to this. I usually give that a pass, both because I'm not a big feta fan and because I like not to have to take a lactase pill sometimes...
So now the result:

...And now for dinner. :) (In the background, @petermorwood is making small new-ish potatoes roasted in duck fat. "Well, the oven's hot, why waste the energy...?")
Meanwhile, the other half of the pumpkin remains to be dealt with. Tomorrow, a regional/seasonal Steldene delicacy: pumpkin tarts with hard Teinakh cheese and spiced pumpkin-flour pastry. They're gonna look so weird—pumpkin flour tends to turn things dark, if not positively green—but the flavor...! :)

Drinks of Doom: Sour Apple Witch’s Brew 🧹
Tumblr media
Content warning: this Drink of Doom is one of the two that contains alcohol - please enjoy responsibly if you drink.
This green apple witch’s brew is sure to put a spell on you.
Closely resembling my Battery Acid cocktail, this is my take on an appletini done with apple juice, fresh lemon juice and citrus vodka, plus a dash of sour apple martini mix (or really, sour apple candy-flavored simple syrup). But if that doesn’t turn it green enough, one drop each of yellow and green food coloring makes this look even more like a classic green potion.
Your cauldron is a cocktail shaker, and your equipment is a kitchen knife, a jigger for measuring your liquid spell ingredients, and a lemon juicer.
Spell ingredients:
3 oz apple juice
1.5 oz lemon juice
1 oz Finest Call Sour Apple Martini Mix
1 shot citrus vodka
1 drop each yellow and green food coloring
Ice
Granny Smith apple slice, for garnish
Chill a coupe glass in the freezer. Cut into a Granny Smith apple and slice thin, slicing a diagonal notch in the center for rim garnish.
Slice lemon in half and juice lemon. Pour about 1.5 oz of fresh lemon juice into your cocktail shaker.
Add the apple juice, citrus vodka, sour apple martini mix and tiny amount of food coloring. Plop in the ice and secure the lid to your cocktail shaker. Shake until very cold, about 15 seconds.
Pour into your chilled coupe glass and garnish with the apple slice.
