Welcome to Garth. Population: him.
Rescue boy, boundless curiosity, might be the sweetest kitten we've ever met.
...and it's ok to tell Gabe we said that, as he now has a high-energy friend to run around with, so he's gotta be nice to us.

Aleksander, your boyfriend  was a great guy, he was tall, handsome, with sandy brown hair and hazel eyes that looked gold in the sun. But on top of that he treated you like a Queen.
He didn't have too much money, but he worked his ass off to give you a good lifestyle. So you never understood why your best friend Dick Grayson didn't like him. Dick was a great guy, if you had to admit you used to have a small crush on him but that quickly went away when you met your boyfriend.
Over time it got awkward for you if you wanted to hang out with both of them, thankfully everytime the three of you met up Dick always brought Kori along. You were never sure why —although it seemed she did and it only amused her further when you didn't realise— but the two of you always got along, you liked Kori and you wished the best for her and Dick's relationship.
You said it to them the first time you met and they seemed so touchy, what concerned you was the angry look in his eyes and the way Jason choked on his drink then started laughing.
You knew what your closest friend was like with women and that's what made you get over him faster than anyone else. He broke more hearts than anyone could count, no matter what persona he took on at night you knew you weren't ready for that kind of heartbreak.
So when you were invited to a Wayne Gala —by Bruce who always thought of you as his daughter— you asked Aleksander to be your plus one.
You stood off towards the side with a few of the original teen titans, reminiscing the times you all had. "remember the time n/n dropped Dick when she was flying?"
You groaned, "to be fair Garth I was rushing around trying to save you all from being poisoned"
"You dropped him?" Aleksander snorted. Normally someone would've been a little concerned but your boyfriend had seen you in action just as you'd seen him.
You were an incarnation of an angel and Aleksander was a very powerful warlock with dark magic, it was fate that the two would meet. It was easy to hide your golden wings thanks to him.
Your head shot up when you saw Roy Harper accompanying Jason Todd, "Roy!" the man turned his head towards the sound of his name and grinned when he saw you, "N/n!"
The two of you met in the middle and he pulled you in for a dramatic hug. You hadn't seen Roy in months after being swept away with your responsibilities helping The Endless. "It's been forever babe!"
You heard Jason muffle laughter behind you. "Hi Jase, let's dance"
Just as you pulled him away a slow song started, looking back you saw Roy wipe a fake tear mouthing something like "they grow up so fast" to Aleksander who was fake crying and holding onto Roy.
Jason let out a huff of amusement when Roy pulled your boyfriend to dance. "Where’ve you been?”
You looked up into his eyes and smiled, “Y’know saving the world, stopping magical entities who want to destroy the universe”
“Oh so the usual?” you hummed, “but that’s not why I wanted to dance with you”
“Oh?”
“Jase, is your brother mad at me or something?”
Jason tilted his head to the side like a puppy, “Dickhead?” you felt bad for asking because Jason really looked like he was thinking hard about why his brother would be mad at you.
He spun you around and once he pulled you back in he muttered, ”I think I might know why big birds mad”
You looked at him with a curious glint in your eyes, “you can’t tell him I told you”
“I promise”
Tumblr media
"Aleks he likes me?"
Your boyfriend sighed, "Why do you make it sound like it'd be hard to be in love with you?"
"I— wait what?" you watched as a grin spread across his features. "What?"
"Baby" you whined as he shook his head, "nuh uh, what were you saying before?"
"I love you— wait no that wasn't it" you groaned, "I can't remember—"
"I love you too but we were talking about your friend" he lent back onto the wall pulling out a cigarette and a light —smoking was a habit he picked up from John Constantine, he raised you and he was the man who trained your boyfriend.
"Jase said that he likes me in that way and that's why doesn't like you"
"mhm" he nodded blowing out smoke from between his lips, "I know"
"You knew?!"
"baby, I see the way everyone looks at you" he tugged at your hand, "have to scout for possible competition y'know" his accent was thicker the lower he talked.
When Aleksander heard the door slam open he pulled you into him, dropping the cigarette onto the floor, summoning a few of his guard dogs.
"What the hell is wrong with you?!" came Dick Grayson's angry voice, when one of the silver dogs leaped at him obviously sensing its master's distaste for the man in front of them.
"Well, when someone slams open a door it's usually never good" you were hidden from view and you hadn't made your presence known.
You heard Dick mutter, "you bitch, I don't understand why she's with you."
Aleksander let out a mocking laugh, "because she loves me?"
"I doubt anyone could love you"
Aleksander raised a brow, "what do you think love? Can anyone love me?"
Dick's head snapped up to see you protectively held in the other man's embrace and glared at the hand around your waste but his eyes softened when he met your disbelieving gaze.
"Why would you— how could you say something like that?"
"Y/n" when he moved forwards you scrunched your nose in distaste at the strong smell of alcohol, he noticed and stopped moving.
"N/n..." the two of you somehow always managed to read each other's minds.
"what do you want me to do Dick— I can't leave him"
"not even for me?"
You looked away, thinking back to when you first met him.
"Come on! why isn't it working?!" You watched silently from across the room —behind John Constantine— as Dick slammed his fists onto the desk.
"S'alright kid" you looked at John, "don't call me kid"
"Alright then sunshine" you gave him a look and he snorted, "pumpkin patch" he grinned when he saw you facepalm. John didn't understand why he took care of you, he didn't have he knew that but he did regardless. Maybe because deep inside no matter how hard he fought it he was scared that you'd turn out like him.
He knew he saw his reflection in your eyes, he saw the boy he was. Rash, unpredictable, a bit arrogant... scared of not being enough.
You couldn't remember why you were in the batcave that day but you were happy to be there and you made a friend.
You looked at Aleksander who was waiting for you, hand outstretched. It reminded you of when the two of you had first met.
"Hey! Get away from her!" you didn't see much when a bright purple light came out of nowhere.
You were confused, you'd seen magic like this before but not in this form. "Are you alright?" you found yourself face to face with a boy, overgrown sandy hair falling into his eyes, hazel eyes that you'd swear was glowing. He was around the same age as you 15 or 16.
"you're pretty" the words came out of your mouth before you realised you were thinking them. you watched a pink slowly dusted his face and he grinned, "you're prettier"
He pulled you up, steadying you and then let go. "I'm Aleksander"
"Y/n!" you whipped around and was brought into warm arms, "fuck, pumpkin patch I thought you were hurt"
"Sorry Johnny" if anyone the two of you knew were to see this they'd think they were on drugs, mostly because everyone knew John as an arrogant prick who only did things for his own benefit.
You didn't protest when he brought your face into his hands, inspecting for injuries. Instead you scanned his face for any cuts or bruises you could heal for him. You lifted you hand up reaching for the faint tint of purple below his eye, once your hands reached his face they were glowing a faint white-yellow.
"Thanks pumpkin patch" he grinned and moved his eyes to the boy behind them, "who are you?" his tone came off rude and harsh.
"Johnny!" you slapped his arm, he rolled his eyes and the boy behind you smiled. "I'm Aleks"
"Did you do that?" John asked, motioning to the dead demon that was slowly disintegrating. Aleksander nodded and watched as John whispered something in your ear that seemed to make your face light up.
John walked away to smoke, muttering "stupid kid, making me soft." You explained to Aleksander that John offered to take him in and teach him how to control his magic. If the boy had to admit the older man made him nervous but your company made him feel a little more at home. When John came back he looked at you expecting an answer but instead you shrugged as he opened a portal and walked through.
You moved towards the portal and held out your hand towards Aleksander.
Back in the present time you sighed, "he's very dear to me"
"dearer than I?"
Just as Aleksander took your hand that day, you took his today. "I'm sorry Dick" And in a flash of white light you both were gone.
Leaving the man in silence and quiet, he scoffed bottle in hand, he walked away.

     Well my buckle makes impressions
     On the inside of her thigh
     There are little feathered Indians
     Where we tussled through the night
 If anyone asked him, Dean just said it was what he had available. But if you really knew Dean, you’d know that the costume he wore that night was born from a deep seeded interest— some may call a fetish— in cowboy culture, films and legend.
 He tips his hat as he walks into the kitchen of Benny’s upper, Garth in aviators follows with Sam in overalls behind him. Sam was lucky he was so huge otherwise Dean wouldn’t risk bringing a high schooler to his friends’ party. And as his big brother, he made sure Sam knew it before they headed out that night.
 Benny’s roommate Gordon is manning the keg, decked out in full ninja gear with foam swords that cross his back. His dark eyes smile when he sees Dean, and they fist bump in greeting before passing plastic cups to Garth and Sam.
 “Didn’t think you’d show,” Gordon calls over the ruckus, keeping the drink line moving.
 Dean shrugs and replies, loudly. “Didn’t really have any other plans, figured it couldn’t hurt.”
 “Well, you know where the big man will be.”
 Dean nods, then thumbs towards the back porch. “Andrea bring any friends?”
 Gordon smirks, and Dean feels it behind the mask. “Yeah, she’s got a whole Greek Chorus out there.”
 Dean hedges his chances and brings his entourage outside to mingle. The deck is almost at maximum capacity. And Dean sees what Gordon meant, there are three or four girls and a couple of guys all in togas, hanging around Benny and Andrea with their spray-painted leaf crowns. There are the customary sexy nurses and cats and a few guys too unoriginal to be anything but some kind of athlete with their favorite jersey thrown on for the night.
 “Hail to the King!” Dean jeers, swaggering over to Benny for a jovial handshake and a side hug for Benny’s long-time girlfriend. “And her majesty, looking gorgeous as ever.”
 “Eyes front, John Wayne,” Benny drawls. “This Sammy?”
 Sam waves awkwardly and Garth finger guns. “Hey, Andrea, who are your friends?”
 Dean rolls his eyes but lets Garth get the introductions.
 “Meg and Anna are my sorority sisters, and this is Anna’s real brother Castiel and their cousin Gabriel. And Bela and Billie are up for the weekend, we grew up together.”
 Everyone smiles or at least nods at the acknowledgment of their names. Then Garth is off, “well I’m your Top Gun Garth Fitzgerald the Fourth, with my two compatriots, Dastardly Dean Winchester and his hayseed of a brother Samuel.”
 “Sam is fine,” Sammy points out, ducking his head nervously.
 Dean just tips his hat again.
 He catches a few eyes, but the unshakeable stare of the taller guy makes Dean swallow around whatever follow-up quip he’d been working on after Garth’s eagerness. And from that two hours, four shots, and three beers later, Dean is wrapped around the guy in the kitchen pantry, sloppy and silly, making out like they’re on a timer.
 Seven minutes in heaven indeed.
 The guy, Castiel, is strong, and solid. He shoves Dean back against the door and bites Dean’s bottom lip before slotting their legs together to get some frictional relief. Dean’s both grateful and frustrated with the jeans of his costume. Cas, Dean decides to shorten it now, in the toga is practically free for the groping, but Dean’s been keeping his hands on his hips until he’s given more verbal permission.
 Sometimes kissing is enough. Sometimes, it’s hard to stop once you get started.
 Sometimes Dean's a chicken shit.
             He lost his hat somewhere on the floor, but he's still got his boots on and that oversized belt buckle he's saved for just an opportunity like this to present itself. And it's his belt buckle that snags on the rope tie of Cas' toga.
 Cas pulls away with an annoyed grunt, tucking and twisting and gathering the flowing fabric until it’s bunched around his waist and Dean thinks he sees the hem of some white boxers in the shadows of the closet. And then he looks at Dean and tilts his head, jaw hitched and eyes imploring. “Have you ever heard that song about saving a horse?”
 And then, some minutes later, Dean’s on his back, and there’s a dress's worth of sheet fanning out from either side of him as Cas writhes against him, both still fully clothed, but hard as steel as they gasp against each other’s mouths.
 “I, uh, don’t usually listen to any modern country—- but I think I found a new appreciation for that song,” Dean gushes in between kisses. Dizzy and drunk on this stranger above him.
 Castiel chuckles and grinds deeper. Dean sees spots and just as he realizes he’s going home with spunky shorts, there’s a bang on the door.
 “Dean-o! Your brother’s puking his guts out!”
 “Fuck off!” Dean hollers back before Benny finishes talking. “Christ,” he mutters under his breath, letting his head drop back onto the floor. He runs his hands up and down Cas’ thighs, feeling his retreating erection make room between them.
 “Do you need to go?” Cas asks, voice low and forgiving.
 Dean peers out of one eye. “Need to? No. But I’m gonna, just wanna—”
 Dean finds Cas beneath all those layers, hot and heavy and somehow still hard. Cas groans at the rough tug of Dean’s hand, but he leans forwards and kisses Dean filthy as he lets this midnight cowboy get him off. At least the train makes for easy concealment and clean-up, for Cas, Dean thinks.
 Begrudgingly, Dean stands to sort himself out before going to find Sam. He untucks his plaid button-up and tries to hide the dark patch on his pants. Cas hands him his hat. Dean smiles shyly and ducks into it.
 “Hey, uh, think I can get your number? That was some ride,” Dean asks.
 “Maybe. Go check on your brother and then find me before you go,” Cas says thoughtfully. But Dean starts to get nervous that this was all it was ever gonna be.
 And then Benny’s pounding again.
 It takes damn near twenty minutes to get Sam vertical and cleaned up, but with Garth’s sober, wiry strength, they get him into the backseat of the Impala. Dean dusts off his hands and looks at his friend. “Thanks, but give me like five minutes, and we can head out.”
 “What?! Dean! He’s a little green in the gills to be beating around the bush,” Garth objects.
 “I know, just— five minutes. Please?” Dean clamps his hand on Garth’s shoulder and begs with his eyes.
 Garth agrees begrudgingly, “clock’s a’ticking.”
 Dean rushes back into the house, but can’t find any sign of Cas. He spots a couple of other members of the toga crew, but none of them have the build of a centurion. He checks the den, the kitchen, even the bathroom, and then, finally, he resigns himself to being a drunken hookup.
 He waves goodbye to Benny and Gordon who are in an epic battle against Bela and Andrea for the beer pong championship and mopes down the front steps.
 To stop dead in his tracks.
 Cas—Castiel is talking to Garth, who is apparently reassuring him that Sam is gonna be fine.
 “--- won’t mind at all, in fact, it’s on the way to my place anyway.” Then the string bean notices Dean’s return. “What do you say, Dean, can we give Mr. Milton here a lift home?”
 Dean straightens up and smiles, feeling ready and willing to do whatever Cas needs. “Everything alright?”
 Cas clenches his fists at his sides and looks back at the house. “Uh, my sister, it appears she and Gabriel left some time ago. If it’s not too much trouble, I don’t live far.”
 Dean understands his apprehension. He’s not about to draw this out in front of Garth, and least of all a shitfaced Sam. “Sure thing, man. Take shotgun, Garth can be on Sam watch for the first leg.”
 Cas lives about a half mile off campus in a two-story bungalow with a well-maintained yard and three rusty cars in the driveway. No wonder he didn’t drive himself, Dean thinks.
 Instead of asking for his number again, Dean gives Cas his, scratched out on the back of a gas station receipt. “Just text me to let me know you got in okay.”
 It’s overkill. Everyone knows it. But no one mentions it.
 Cas accepts the piece of paper and nods at Dean, never breaking eye contact. And suddenly Garth is ready to swap places with Dean for the drive to Garth’s apartment. The moment is broken, Cas lets his fingers brush against Dean’s as he tugs on the receipt, but nothing more is said.
 He goes in through the side door, and the Impala backs out onto the quiet street.
Tumblr media
  If I'd known she was religious
   Then I wouldn't have came stoned
To the house of such an angel
   Too fucked up to get back home
 Cas doesn’t text Dean until the following afternoon.
       >>> I got in okay.
        <<< I figured
        <<<Must have been some lock
     <<< glad to hear it
      <<<hows it going otherwise?
 They start casually talking, getting to know one another instead of just each other’s mouths and bodies. Cas is in his third year, studying ancient history with a focus on the Mediterranean. He seems very impressed with Dean being an engineering student, which isn’t the first time he’s heard it, but it still feels good.
  Dean’s done with his last class with an entire day left before Thanksgiving break, so he and Benny are getting stoned and watching slasher fics. The bloodier, the better, they agreed. They’re about to start the last movie of the first trilogy when Andrea bursts in, in tears. Something about her stepmom or some family drama. Benny gives Dean a regretful look, but Dean knows when to make himself scarce. He stands to go and realizes he cannot drive. Everything is light and fluffy, and his tongue works over his teeth to give it something to do.
 Dean decides to go for a walk. The fall air is crisp, and he knows the neighborhood well enough, even high as balls in the darkness of the late afternoon. He makes the brilliant decision to text Cas, to see if he’s free. Dean’s been trying not to get too attached to the stoic history major. But he can’t deny he wants to see him again and is curious to see what he only drunkenly felt on Halloween.
 There are two major streets that lead into campus, and each has a minor grid of residential streets that break off in either direction, to the east it ends with the lake, to the west it ends with the river, and more pointedly, the start of the freeway. Dean heads to the west and the rows of older homes which have all slowly been turned into rental properties for the upperclassmen. The streets are full of students rushing off campus, but once Dean reaches the turn-off to Cas’ place, the chaos of the campus has quieted to normal neighborhood noises.
 It’s peaceful, Dean thinks. Nothing like the crappy trailers he and Sam have been in and out of since their house burned down. Not too shabby for university housing, all in all. Cas had replied a simple ‘not much’ for his plans for the night, so Dean takes the risk. Worst case scenario, the guy isn’t even home.
 So, when an acne-covered kid, who couldn’t be over fourteen, answers the door, Dean is concerned. Then the kid goes and yells at the top of his lungs, “Castiel, you have a guest!” Like they’re suddenly in some sort of Victorian novel.
 Then it all clicks, this isn’t some rental, this is the house Cas lives in, with his entire family. And there are a lot of them, besides pimple face, there’s Anna and some blonde guy watching television in the den just off the foyer. Cas comes down the wide wooden staircase with a pencil behind his ear and his eyebrows pitched in alarm, pink lips pinched tight.
 Dean tries to smile and wave, but he is interrupted by a short guy with curly gray hair and piercing blue eyes, lighter and more ominous than Cas’.
 “Are you a friend of Castiel’s from school?”
 Dean swallows because he hasn’t been asked a question like that since he hit double digits. He looks to Cas and back to his dad and holds out his hand.
 “Uh, hi, I’m Dean. I was just in the neighborhood and thought I’d say by— swing hi.”
 “Dean—,” Cas warns softly, hand clutching the ornate railing.
 “I’m Chuck, but you can call me Mr. Shurley. I’m Castiel’s dad.” The guys got a grip on him, and very soft hands. Dean nods and shakes for longer than is probably necessary, but better to be safe than sorry.
 “Nice to meet you, sir.”
 “Likewise,” Chuck smiles and pulls his hand back, finally.
 “I didn’t realize you were already done with classes,” Castiel tilts his head, probably trying to remain civil, but Dean feels himself be weighed and measured in his gaze. Damnit, he knows Dean’s stoned.
 Does his dad know though?
 Dean shrugs. “I got lucky this semester, only got Tuesday/Thursday classes.”
 “Castiel?” His dad interrupts. “Why don’t you see if your friend would like to join us for dinner?”
 Food sounds amazing and Dean kind of likes all the politeness. “Yeah, Cas, can I stay for dinner?”
 Cas looks to the ceiling and then at the couch, glaring over a fleeting giggle from Anna. “I’ll go set another place for him,” he grumbles, sulking through the den and into a door that must lead to the kitchen. Or maybe the dining room, old houses like this would have one of those, Dean thinks.
 “Come on in, Dean,” Chuck holds the door wide, and Dean steps inside and takes off his leather jacket. He sets it on a well-stocked coat rack just inside the door, there aren’t any shoes in the foyer, so Dean keeps his boots on.
 He doesn’t think he’d be able to unlace them in front of an audience, not at the moment anyway.
 “Something tells me you know, Anna as well–”
 Dean smirks. “Guilty.”
 “And that’s Michael, our oldest.”
 “How’s it going?” Dean nods to the guy, who looks to be damn near thirty.
 “Sup?” Michael barely glances in Dean’s direction.
 “Hey, Dean. How’s your brother?” Anna asks, turning from the t.v. to give their guest her full attention.
 “Sammy’s fine, just a little low on the tolerance level, but I think he learned his lesson.” Dean tries to cover all his bases, not sure how well received underaged drinking would be by Cas’ family.
 Chuck sighs awkwardly. Dean turns to look at him, and he almost elbows the kid that answered the door in the face. Where the hell was the twirp this whole time?!
 “Samandriel, did you finish your homework?”
 “Not yet, but I will after dinner. I swear!” The kid’s voice cracks, and Dean feels for him.
 He shoves his hands in the front pockets of his jeans and tries not to make his presence too obvious. Though he’s probably the biggest person in the house unless there are more brothers somewhere. Dean glances around the room and sees a row of school pictures spanning an entire wall. One, two, four, shit there’s six of them!
 And Anna’s the only girl.
 “Guilty,” she shoots his answer back at his thinking out loud. “Did Castiel know you were coming?”
 Dean spins his head and bats his lashes at her, trying to remember the question. “No— nope. I, uh, kinda just assumed.”
 “Well, you’re in it now. I hope you like spaghetti because she always makes too much as it is,” Anna says.
 Dean’s stomach growls. Even Michael laughs.
 Luckily Chuck wanders away at some point, so Dean is able to relax a little. But then Cas is back, and Dean has to remember not to openly flirt with the oh-so-handsome grump.
 “So how blazed are you right now?” Cas murmurs as they let his siblings lead the way to the table.
 Dean squints and pouts his lips, contemplating. “About half as much as when I got here. I’ll be fine!”
 Cas cocks an eyebrow, but Dean must be adorable like this or something because Cas throws him a bone. “My mother’s name is Naomi, call her Ms. Milton if you want to get in her good graces.”
 Dean whispers, “I thought your dad’s name was Shurley.”
 Cas licks his lips and grins. “It is, she didn’t take it.”
 “Ah!” Dean gets it, and Cas nods him towards the dining room door.
 The dining room is lined in dark wood, but is well-lit. The parents take the seats at either end of the table while the mostly grown children all find spots along the sides. No one mentions the empty seat between Anna and Michael or from whom Dean’s borrowing his chair. He chooses the seat on the end near Cas’ mom, she looks nice, and he hasn’t gotten to charm a mom since he helped Benny and Gordon move in August.
 “It smells amazing, Ms. Milton. Thanks for having me,” Dean beams as he pulls in his chair.
 The woman’s bright eyes sparkle with amusement. “So you’re our surprise guest. Mr?---”
 “Winchester, ma’am. Dean Winchester. I go to school with Cas and Anna,” Dean explains as Cas fills his water glass. “Thanks, man.”
 “It’s nice to see that Castiel is being social, he tends to get so involved in his studies that he—,” Naomi starts.
 “Mom!” Anna cuts in, eyes Cas and Dean, and then bobs her head to show that line of conversation is a little awkward. “Dean, what’s your major again?”
 “Mechanical Engineering, though it was a tough call, I almost went civil, but I figured the small problems are more my specialty. I love figuring out how to make things work and work better.”
 “It’s nice to see someone passionate about their field,” Chuck adds, after which Dean catches a glare between Michael and Salamander. Chuck clears his throat and holds up his hands for his children on each side to hold. “Bow your heads.”
 Dean takes Cas’ hand in his left and Naomi’s hand in his right, the size difference between their two hands is mesmerizing, and Dean forgets to listen to the prayer of gratitude. He risks rubbing his thumb against Cas’ while it’s out of sight.
 Cas has good hands.
 Suddenly there is a very abrupt chorus of “amen,” and Dean catches up a beat too late. But at least he can open his eyes again. Anna smirks at him, and Cas does his best to avoid making eye contact as they eat. Other than Dean eating two full plates worth, his presence becomes less of a novelty as the meal progresses.
 He volunteers to do the dishes because that’s how he was raised.
 Awkwardly enough, it is also Michael’s turn. So Dean dries as Michael washes. The weed is almost completely out of his system, but a thick food coma has settled in its place. Michael isn’t terribly chatty, but Dean gets the impression that he is not impressed with Dean at all.
 Dean’s spinning the cullender as he wipes it dry. He wonders what Cas is doing since his dad insisted that Dean was fine on his own. Either way, there are worse ways to spend a night off.
 “So, you go to State too or—?” Dean tries to make conversation.
 Michael chuckles and shakes his head.
 “No, I work with our dad printing his magazine. I set us up online, and now I kind of do whatever comes up,”
 “Family business, huh? I get that. What’s the magazine? Anything I would have come across?”
 Michael looks at Dean in mild amusement. “I doubt it.”
 Dean counters, “try me.” He takes the last pot from the drip tray.
 “Christian Home & Family Quarterly,” Michael deadpans and flicks the water off his hands towards the sink before wiping them off on the front of his jeans.
 Dean concedes with a little bounce of his head. “Yeah, can’t say that I have seen that one.”
    “Yeah, you don’t seem like the church-going type. No offense.”
 Dean just raises his eyebrows, because he’s not about to get into an argument with this guy in his own kitchen. But also, what the fuck?!
 Michael grins and slaps Dean on the back. “Thanks for the assist. I’ll go tell Castiel he gets to have his playdate before it’s time for bed.”
 Dean mutters silently behind Michael’s back. “Playdate my ass.”
 He drains the sink and wipes down the counters, unsure if Cas is going to come to find him or if Dean is going to have to wander back to the living room for a prayer circle.
 He wouldn’t be surprised either way.
 “You’re still here,” Cas says briskly. Dean can’t decide if that’s shock or annoyance in his eyes.
 Dean goes for broke and smirks. “Can’t get rid of me that easily.”
 “I’m sorry— when you texted— I had no idea you were nearby. Or—”
 “High as a kite? Yeah, man, no problem, I didn’t realize this was your folks’ place. This is all on me. On a scale of one to never, how likely will I be welcomed back?”
 Castiel tilts his chin down. “Do you want to come back? We usually weird people out well before they make it to the dinner table.”
 “Uh, well,” Dean stutters and scratches the back of his head. “I don’t mind the family time. I was just hoping to maybe hang out with you some more. But, uh, I’m guessing they don’t know about—.”
 Cas sighs and looks behind him to see that the kitchen door is still closed. “No, they don’t. They think I’m an innocent, socially inept, straight guy who is so busy with school he isn’t ready to find a wife and settle down.”
 “What about Michael?” Dean asks because that’s the first counterpoint to Cas’ parents' thought process his brain supplies.
 “What about Michael?” Cas leans against the sink, holding his opposite elbow.
 “Why isn’t he married and having a soccer team of his own?”
 Cas frowns, but mostly in the brow. “He’s got impossible standards. And a bit of a temper, if I’m being honest. But who am I to judge?”
 Dean tugs Cas’ hand away from his middle, stepping into his space and whispering, “Cas, if me hanging around could get you in trouble, I won’t do it. But if you still want to get to know one another better, I’ll be on my best behavior. Honest.”
 Cas bites his lips and looks at their fingers looped together. “I don’t have many friends. I can’t trust a lot of people with who I am, Dean. All I can do is work my ass off to graduate on time and find a doctoral program or a teaching job somewhere my parents and their church can’t repress me.”
 “Well, I gotta admit I was hoping for more than friendship showing up here tonight. But if that’s what you need, Cas— I can be your friend,” Dean tries to swallow down the disappointment. It’s not a rejection, but the aches are related.
 Cas looks firmly into Dean’s eyes. “I can only be friends here, Dean. Anywhere else, in private—”
 Dean nods, biting his bottom lip as he tries not to stare at Cas’ mouth. Oh, to feel those lips on his again. He clears his throat and straightens up.
 “Alright, buddy, you got it. So— you think you can give me a lift to my car?”

     I said many folks have warned me
     There's been several people try
But up 'til now, there ain't been nothing
     That I couldn't leave behind
 It was one of those in-between weeks, where the panic of finals sneaks up after Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, everyone is rushing to get ready to head back to wherever they’re actually from. Except for Dean, of course, ever the townie.
 He inhales a long drag off his cigarette and looks out over the campus. It’s late, even for night classes. The walkways are lit up like a Christmas tree but in Hannukah’s colors of white and safety blue. He’s got a good ten minutes before his supervisor comes looking for him, so Dean spends the last minutes of fresh air sucking down chemicals. It still beats the fake lemon tinge of the floor wax.
 He’s got two more floors worth of hallways ahead of him, and then the main floor’s bathrooms. Dean sighs and watches the smoke drift over the edge of the roof and into the night. He’s grateful for the job, especially since campus jobs are required to work around his class schedule. It’s just the second shift that kills most of his chances at socializing. And stops him from keeping closer tabs on Sam during the school week.
 Which might be for the best, for both of them, these days.
 Dean knows he’s not their dad, but Sam could really stand to listen every now and again. Kid’s smart, of course he is, but Dean doesn’t want him bullshitting his junior year and losing his chance at scholarships.
 Fuck— this isn’t the time to start worrying about this shit. Dean takes the last pull and holds the smoke in his lungs, letting it simmer. He exhales, scrapes the cherry off the end, and tosses the butt into the abyss between buildings. Sammy’d glare at him for littering, but when it’s his crew that’ll be pulling it out of the bushes someday, Dean can’t feel too guilty about it.
 He feels his phone vibrate against his thigh once he’s back inside and he takes the chance to check his messages.
     Cas
     >>>Kinda a nasty habit
 Dean instinctively looks over his shoulder, and back into the blinding fluorescence of the physical science building hall. He’s alone. Before he can reply to Cas being a creepy fucker, he gets another message.
     >>>I don’t know if you’ve heard, but it’s not very good for you.
 Well, at least he knows what he’s getting reprimanded for.
     <<<Yeah, but I look hot doing it
     <<< call it a wash
     >>>I doubt your lungs would agree.
 Dean checks the hall one last time and walks to the stairwell behind the elevators, mostly meant for staff use.
     <<<Why are you still at school?
     <<<Don’t you usually turn into a pumpkin about this time?
 He shoves his phone back into his pocket as he marches down to the fourth floor to pick up where he left off. He doesn’t feel a reply until he’s got the scrubber lined up and crawling along. It’s tomorrow before Dean can reply, but he goes to sleep rereading Cas’ last message.
     >>>Working in the library. God has not been so gracious as to turn me into a gourd to save me from the FOUR papers I have this semester.
     >>>Don’t work too hard. Or give yourself cancer.
 It’s weird to have somebody besides Sam giving him grief about his health. It almost feels like enough of a nudge to actually listen.

     From the circles it has raced
       Well my heart is sweating bullets
    Like a little feathered Indian
     Callin' out the clouds for rain
 Dean steps through the old wooden doors and does not immediately burst into flames. Sam’s behind him, and Bobby’s behind him. They make their way to one of the back pews, guided by candlelight alone. It’s Christmas Eve, and Dean decided they were going to church for the first time since John’s funeral.
 Amazingly, neither Sam nor Bobby questioned it.
 Dean sits down and tries not to get caught searching the congregation for a specific head of dark hair. Bobby even takes off his hat and reads over the single-sheet program. The shadows cast by the flames turn the room into something otherworldly, both ancient and echoing. An unmistakable strum of an acoustic guitar breaks through the murmuring of the settling crowd. Then Cas’ little brother sings the first verse of Silent Night to start the service.
 Dean doesn’t have anything against God. Besides the usual orphan’s complaints, he supposes. He just doesn’t feel like he has anything to prove to the guy either. As far as he’s concerned, if God minds his own business, Dean will too. But there are those people who look at him funny, like they can see the gutter he dragged him and Sam out of and blame him for it. Like it really matters if he’s poor, or fucks around, or parties.
 Life’s too short not to enjoy it.
 And until God gives him a personal guarantee either way, he’s not changing.
 Those people are just too uptight to see the things Dean enjoys as blessings, not temptations. Sam’s more of an everything-in-moderation type, but that even seems restrictive to Dean. And as long as they're safe and happy—
 An older man stands at the front of the church and begins reading from Luke. The guy has a nasally voice, and it grates against Dean’s ears, but he soon passes the story on to Anna, who is wearing a simple black velvet dress with her hair pulled back.
 They pause in the reading to lead the congregation in a verse of O’ Little Town of Bethlehem. Then Dean sees Cas for the first time. Not singing, but approaching the front of the church from the side aisle. He takes the Bible from Anna and stands with dazed patience as the melody trails off. Dean wipes his palms on his thighs as he mumbles the words he thinks are right, swallowing when Cas starts to read.
 His voice is so much better to listen to than creepy guy’s.
 It’s then that Sam catches up. Dean doesn’t look directly at him, but he FEELS the bitch face he’s getting across the side of his face and down the suddenly tight collar of his dress shirt. It’s uncalled for is what it is, it’s Christmas! Can’t a guy pick a church to go to without an ulterior motive?
 Dean hates that he knows what Sam is going to say already and that he’s probably right. What Sam doesn’t know is that Dean is doing this to get in good with Cas’ family, not just get into Cas’ pants again. But he couldn’t exactly explain that without spilling all of Cas’ secrets, either.
 Dean ignores Sam but misses the end of Cas’ reading. There are a few more songs and more scripture. They close with their heads bowed in prayer, and a simple chime from the organ sends them off, to proceed reflectively and silently into the dark night.
 Their very conveniently placed seats for arrival suddenly are not so helpful as the people fill the aisles and bottleneck at the exits, either for donning their hats and coats, which Dean and company hadn’t bothered hanging up, or for socializing in whispers. Dean feels suddenly scrutinized as boomer after boomer eye him and Sam as fresh meat. He smiles and nods placatingly until he catches Michael’s raised eyebrow.
 Dean is trapped. What was he even thinking— now he is actually going to have to interact with Cas’ family. And not the nice ones.
 Michael lunges forward and grabs Dean’s hand in a tight shake, but takes care to murmur his greeting. “Dean, my man. Glad to see you.”
 Dean squeezes his hand back. “Hey Mikey, this here, uh, is my little brother Sam and my Uncle Bobby.”
 “Fellas,” Michael nods in turn. When Cas approaches and eyes the space between Michael and Dean suspiciously, Michael smirks. “Caught me fraternizing, huh, Castiel?”
 Cas just rolls his eyes before nodding at Dean, his jaw is locked tight.
 They share a glance as the crowd crawls out the back of the sanctuary, but nothing close to the reunion Dean was hoping for after weeks apart. He waits for the Milton-Shurleys to pass and then he follows them outside, completely unaware if Sam and Bobby are following or if they left him to fend for himself.
 Dean keeps his head down, though his heart is in his throat and his stomach is in knots. He came to see Cas and seeing him just makes Dean miss him more. Once outside, he hunches his shoulders against the cold, stepping carefully down the stone stairs. The parking lot is packed with people mingling, despite the late hour and the weather. There’s a row of people waiting to be picked up along the small walkway.
 Dean blows on his bare hands, rubs them together, and looks around, trying to find Sam or Bobby in the crowd. It’s like he’s been transported to an old movie or a Christmas card. Silver Bells’ lyrics run through his head as the snow gently falls on the retreating churchgoers. A throat clears behind him, and he spins, expecting Bobby.
 It’s Cas.
 With apologetic bright eyes, he smiles secretly at Dean. “Hello, Dean.”
 This was all worth it, dragging Sam along, singing carols, and the awkward exchange with Michael. Because Cas is looking at him like he’s a gift and Dean has to swallow and remember to breathe all at once.
 “Heya, Cas. Merry Christmas.” His cheeks prickle, but he can’t get any redder, from cold or blood.
 Cas’ face softens further. “It is, isn’t it?”
 They hold each other’s gaze, ignoring the dwindling crowd and even the rumble of the Impala’s engine as it pulls up beside them on the curb. Cas’ family is climbing into a beat-up van that’s parked in a loading zone. But neither of them really registers any of it. Because even in the darkness, Dean’s green locks on to Cas’ blue and holds tight, like spring leaves reaching towards an afternoon sky.
 “Thank you for—”
 “I should probably-”
 A nervous beat breaks the stalemate and forces them to look away. And all the world rushes back around them. Dean shifts and holds up a finger to signal Sam to button it up before he starts heckling.
 “‘S good to see you, man. Take it easy.”
 Cas reaches out and grips the meat of Dean’s bicep and nods. “Merry Christmas.”
 Dean wants to kiss him so damn bad. Instead, he licks his lips and does them both a favor by stepping back and breaking the contact. He waves at Anna as she approaches, folded in her puffer coat, big eyes full of concern. Impossibly, he walks away.
 Dean doesn’t look back as he crawls into the backseat. Bobby’s got the keys, and there’s no way Sam would forfeit shotgun now. It’s almost two before Dean’s in bed, looking forward to a long weekend of good food and sleeping in. Exhaustion can’t stop him from checking his phone one last time.
 It’s not in vain.

     >>>Until then. * kissy emoji*
 Dean blushes and cringes in equal measure as he types a simple “x” and darkens his screen. Suddenly he’s very much awake.

 Coffee gets crashed by Cas’ cousin Gabriel, and though he’s annoying and nosey, he seems to be someone Cas can trust. Then Cas has to drive Michael and their father to the airport the next time they try to schedule something.
 Dean’s getting desperate, but he tries not to let his disappointment show. To top off all of their scheduling conflicts, Cas is taking a winterim course, three credits of work, and knowledge packed into three weeks’ time. Dean is worried he’s coming on too strong, pushing Cas away with his neediness.
     <<<If it doesnt snow maybe we can get lunch on campus tmrw
 It takes nearly an hour for Cas to reply. Dean does not have a cigarette as he waits, impatiently. He has to stop himself from deleting the text or double texting three different times. Why is he like this?
     >>>I’d love to. Subs or burgers?
     <<< Burgers!
     <<< The redder the meat the better
     >>>Agreed!
 Dean huffs out a chuckle at Cas’ earnestness.
 <<<Meet you outside your class?
 >>>Sounds good. See you at 12:45
 It snows. From sun up until just before noon. Which means Dean has to work, clearing the sidewalks with one of the plow-fitted ride-on lawnmowers. During breaks, he fills in on the grounds crew to make up for the hours he loses with fewer custodial shifts available. The school’s recruiting brochure brags about the five miles of walking paths on a scenic, green, urban campus. Dean curses every inch of those five miles as he speeds to make it in time to at least tell Cas in person why he has to miss lunch.
 He pushes the engine as hard as he can while taking the time to carefully plow the way from the parking lot to each building. He forgot his headphones and his phone’s tinny speakers do little against the open air, but Dean bobs his head and sings along, trying to keep up some momentum. And fight his growing anxiety.
 The Humanities’ buildings all back up against a small pond and Dean gets to those paths as his phone reaches a glaring 11% battery life. He shuts off his tunes and keeps pressing forward, only thirty minutes or so to get done.
 He’s gonna make it. He has to. Even if he only gets a thirty-minute break and getting back to the Union will take ten of it, he’s going to get to see Cas. One-on-one, finally.
  Dean plows and backs up and plows some more. He clears the loop around the pond and kills the engine just outside the nearest side entrance to the History building. It’s 12:48 and Dean is swiping his staff badge to get inside quicker. He stomps his boots clean before charging up the steps to the second floor and nearly runs smack into Cas as he turns toward the discussion rooms. Cas apologizes without looking up at first, clearly irritated.
 Dean grabs him by the upper arm and makes Cas see him, however late. Dean made it. He’s sweaty, and his nose is freezing, but Dean beams as Cas’ eyes take him in.
 “Hey, sorry, I—”
 “Yeah, I just made it. Sorry, I’m on the clock.”
 Cas squints and closes his distractingly chapped lips. “I see.”
 “Got time for a quick lunch, if you’re still game?” Dean cocks his head down to the stairs and holds his breath.
 “It’d be a bit brief for a first date, don’t you think?” Cas asks, adjusting the strap of his messenger bag on his shoulder.
 Dean licks his lips because he knows he’s got to salvage this. “This is just the pre-date. The real date will be longer— better.” He sighs and steps closer. “Maybe we can hash out the details over lunch?”
 Dean ducks to meet Cas’ reluctant gaze, giving his best hopeful eyes. Castiel looks at Dean and sighs with his whole being.
 “Okay, burgers?”
 Dean slaps him on the shoulder and holds on. “Burgers!”
 They ride to the Union on the lawn mower with the plow raised for safety, Dean speeding on the nearly abandoned pavement, and Cas holding on to the back, grinning like a fool.

       Hold me close my dear
     Sing your whispering song
     Softly in my ear
     And I will sing along
 They've managed a handful of stolen moments since. And now, Cas is over at his place, attempting to watch football while not overtly flirting in front of Sam.
            Their first date was indeed longer, but finding time and location that had both access and anonymity was difficult. The Italian food left much to be desired, though Dean couldn't ask for better company. Miraculously, Cas asked him out for a second date, and the movie wasn't bad.
 Sam is not buying it.  "You guys know you don't have to babysit me, right?"
Dean looks at Sam and silently begs him to not be a bitch. "What are you talking about? I wanna watch the game."
 Sam cocks his head. "Who’s playing, Dean?"
 Dean looks at the TV and tries to figure out the teams by their helmets and initials on the score at the bottom.
 "That's what I thought. Go fool around, or whatever it is you keep stopping yourselves from doing. I get it," Sam clips out the last t's.
Dean pushes up off the couch, hovering over his seat as he looks at Cas and smirks.
 Cas’ eyes go wide, but he nods, his lips hollowed out in query. Dean nods towards the back of the trailer and heads down the hallway without another word, away from Sam and to the thinnest illusion of privacy. He feels Cas follow but doesn’t see his fisted hands at his sides.
 The hollow door latches loosely closed behind them.
 Dean turns on Cas instantly. Before he even realizes he chose to, he’s cupping a nape, and his mouth is catching Cas’ on the uptake. Both open and filthy. Dean feels Cas exhale into him, feels his body still and his hands perch on Dean’s shoulders delicately.
 Dean grins into the kiss and presses closer into Cas’ space. Tries to unbury that toga-clad energy from Halloween. However sober, Dean knows it's in there.
 All while getting them closer to the bed.
 Cas sighs and grips Dean tighter. Pushes in with his chin forward and gives back. Dean sucks his tongue into his mouth and moans at the thick, heavy wetness.
 Fuck, he’s hungry.
 Dean stagger steps them towards the far wall, which makes the bed less than three feet away, but for some reason, they can’t stop kissing long enough to get there. It’s like depleting oxygen tanks or the last slurp of soda at the bottom of the cup. They need to kiss until they’ve gotten all of each other, desperate and determined; they taste.
 Until they start to laugh.
 Dean feels Cas chuckle, hunching his shoulders as they peck around giddy smiles.
 “What’s so funny, hm?” Dean asks, looking down at Cas’ scrunched-up nose as he tries to pull away.
 Cas just shakes his head and hauls Dean by the waist, kisses him again, and notches their thighs tighter. And okay, Dean is all about that, but he still feels like he’s missing something, but he doesn’t really think too hard about it with all the friction.
 Then the floor is out from under his feet, and Cas is on top of him, half off the bed and growling against his neck. Dean huffs and giggles. Because, damn. He should have had his guard up. Luckily Coach Sonny wasn’t here to see that, because that was a solid takedown and Dean let it happen.
 Dean catches his breath, slides his hand under Cas’ sweater and squeezes.
 Cas freezes and glares. Dean looks back under his lashes, challenging.
 “Ticklish, Cas?”
 “No, but I know you are— that , I remember,” Cas replies as he slides up and pulls Dean’s hands above his head. Dean stretches out, slinking further up the bed and Cas follows, fucking stalking up his body with heated determination.
 Dean swallows and goes for broke. “You gonna lose the Sunday best? Been dying to see you— feel you.”
 Dean looks Cas up and down, crumpled and creased. His starched khakis do little to hide his desire, even in the gray afternoon light of Dean’s one-windowed room.
 Cas rears back, kneeling on the bed between Dean’s legs and yanks the thick crocheted sweater over his back. It leaves his hair messy, but Dean’s too busy watching the way his shoulders flex as he pulls his arms out of the sleeves.
 Cas balls up the shirt and tosses it in the corner, shrugging as if to say, ‘and?’
 Dean rolls his eyes but scoots to sitting and starts unbuttoning his flannel. Castiel plays with Dean’s necklaces until it’s time to take off his t-shirt. And now that he’s got Cas in his lap, topless, Dean’s a little shy about his own bare torso. He’s not exactly super-defined or anything. He knows his strength, but he likes to eat, okay? Being poor you don’t skip meals unless you have to.
 He’s kicking himself for not letting Sammy talk him into matching tattoos. Any tattoo automatically makes you hotter. But the kid’s got another two years before Dean could get him into a legit parlor anyway. He inhales and ducks out of his shirt, and immediately surges up to restart making out, unwilling to watch Cas see him just yet.
 Cas’ hands roam Dean’s back, groping and kneading, dexterous and distracting.
 Dean gets lost in the fog of want, too tight in the pants to dwell on his shirtlessness. Then Cas cups his jaw and pulls back to look him in the eyes. Insistent, imploring blue.
 “Can we turn on some music?”
 Which was not, at all, what Dean was expecting Cas to ask him in that moment.
 Dean laughs and nods. But Cas keeps talking, “it’s just I know we’re probably louder than we realize. And with a younger sibling within earshot— I’d feel better if we— at least pretended—”
 Dean kisses Cas, shutting him up. “Dude, yes.” Peck. “I’ve got tunes.” Peck. “Just give me a sec.”
 Dean carefully unwraps himself from Cas’ body, giddy and grinning over all the skin he can see and finally feel . He pulls out the thigh of his jeans, trying to create room as he half stumbles and half struts to the bookcase and the ancient boombox he found at the Goodwill that has a double tape deck and a six-disc changer.
 He had been making compilation tapes during his downtime before spring classes start, and had intended to make one for each year to give the impala some diversity without letting Sam use his damn phone all the time. He just pushes play on the last finished tape. The old hiss from recording from vinyl starts and the room is filled with the crooning of Tommy James and the Shondells.
 When Dean turns around Cas’ head is cocked and he’s resting back on his palms, broad chest and strong arms on display. Dean wants to crawl into his lap and pink up his lips some more. But, ever the little shit, instead he unbuckles his belt and drops trow, kicking out of his pants and making Cas’ eyes bulge like a treefrog.
 Cas licks his lips and sits up, trying to open his fly and watch Dean step closer at the same time. If there’s one thing Dean knows it’s the art of distraction, and if his dick is out, there’s less chance Cas is gonna be staring at his softer-than-he’d-like torso.
 He grabs Cas by the back of the neck and leans down to kiss him filthy, kneeing between Cas’ legs as he feels Cas’ shaking hands find his hips. Dean smiles into the kiss and slows it down, pulling back to watch Cas’ lids flutter open, dopey and bright.
 “Wanna see you— can I?” Dean gestures down to Cas’ khakis and instantly draws attention back to his ruddy cock. Cas mumbles something but then nods, sitting taller and leaning back, forcing himself to look away as Dean sinks to the floor.
 He starts with Cas’ shoes and then his socks, and sees Cas flex his toes before falling fully onto his back on Dean’s bed. Dean drags himself back up and pulls open Cas’ pants, hands snaking beneath his thighs and tugging the fabric as Cas rocks from side to side. Dean looks him over, strong runner’s legs and dark hair, flat stomach, and messy hair. Fuck! If Dean didn’t know he went every which way already, he’d be so screwed. Castiel is gorgeous, and Dean’s got him in his bed naked as a jaybird.
 Happy early birthday, Dean thinks to himself and sets his hands alongside Cas’ waist to crawl up the miles of skin, trying not to stare at Cas’ fat dick that's hard and leaking for him.
 “I don’t want you to penetrate me,” Cas blurts out of nowhere.
 Dean stops in his tracks. “Uh, wasn’t even close to that yet, buddy. But, okay. That’s fine.”
 Dean looks down at their laps and then away, resting back on his heels, needing Cas’ to say more or even look at him. Cas’ eyes are shut tight, and he’s rubbing the bridge of his nose. Dean feels his anxiety in the air, so he starts rubbing Cas’ thigh and waits.
 And does not touch his own dick, even though it’s begging for any sort of contact.
 “Cas?” Dean asks after a solid two minutes of tense silence. “Is this your first time?”
 Dean knee-walks to Cas’ side and tries to pry his hands from hiding his face. “Because it’s totally okay if it is. I, uh, I haven’t really done much with guys— and I’m just excited we’re finally getting a chance to be alone— and all that.”
 Cas sighs and glares at Dean.
 Dean drops his chin and glares back. “What’s that for?”
 “You are being completely understanding, and I really don’t need another reason to like you,” Cas explains.
 “Thanks?” Dean guesses a polite response.
 Cas rolls his eyes and sits up, apparently unaffected by his own nakedness. He reaches for Dean’s hand and fiddles with his mother’s ring. “Can we go back to the kissing? I can handle that, and it’s goo—”
 Dean doesn’t let Cas talk himself into more embarrassment. Yeah, the kissing is good, great even. But Dean doesn’t want Cas worrying either. So he lays them both down, on their sides, knees knocking and dicks not quite touching. The heat between them lays in concentrated hollows, making the rest of them pucker in the winter air.
 Dean cups Cas’ jaw and runs his thumb along his cheekbone. “You okay?”
 Cas holds his wrist and husks out, “yeah. You?”
 Dean breathes out a single laugh. “Yeah, I’m pretty effin’ okay.”
 Dean kisses Cas’ chin, and nudges down to kiss along the underside of his jaw until he can suck on his pulse point. Cas’ breath hitches and Dean goes for broke, sliding his pelvis across the neutral zone they’d silently negotiated, in search of progress and the throbbing relief of the press of flesh against flesh.
 Cas moans and Dean reaches down and grabs a handful of Cas’ ass. Then he rolls them both so Dean’s on the bottom and Cas is the one in control. Cas licks into Dean’s mouth and grinds down, feeling the way their dicks slide together between their bellies.
 “What do you like?” Cas asks suddenly, hips rolling long and languid as Dean squirms and pecks at the parts of Cas he can reach.
 Dean looks up at Cas and smirks. “Do your worst. We can try whatever you want to try first.”
 Cas stills and bites his lips. “Are you sure?”
 Dean spreads his legs and feels Cas fall harder against him. “Yeah, it’s okay, just see how it goes. No stress—- this is supposed to be fun.”
 Cas nods seriously and kisses Dean’s cheek. “Thank you, Dean.”
 He looks down at their bodies, nestled and sticky, their dicks have been impossibly patient. “I’m not sure about the taste of semen. Do you mind if I taste you?”
 “Do I mind?” Dean stares slack-jawed and appalled. “No, I do not mind. Fucking taste away, Cas, Christ. Blow jobs are only some of the best things humans have invented, up there with music and pizza.”
 “Hmmmm, I may have to ask you to prove your hypothesis, but—.” Cas clears his throat. “Later.”
 Then he inches down Dean’s body and takes Dean’s dick firmly in hand. He traces the head with the pad of his thumb, making Dean whine as he tugs the skin of the shaft, watching carefully as more precum beads at the slit. With a flattened tongue, Cas laps the head of Dean’s dick and Dean goes cross-eyed watching him.
 Still holding Dean’s shaft, Cas starts licking Dean like an ice cream cone, and it’s not bad, it’s just very apparent the guy has never watched porn. Dean moans and starts rolling his hips, trying to at least get some stroking going on if Cas isn’t gonna take him into his mouth fully.
 When Cas starts to mirror Dean’s movements, Dean husks, “yeah, now, uh, can you suck on it? You don’t have to take it all, just start slow.”
 Cas watches Dean’s face as he holds the tip of Dean’s dick on his bottom lip and mouths around the girth. If he wasn’t so worried, Dean might have laughed, but Cas’ bright-eyed earnestness is making it hard for Dean to keep talking him through it.
 “Okay, now try and use your tongue, like we’re kissing,” Dean offers. “And take a little more in.”
 Cas obliges, words buzzing around his mouth as he asks, “like that?”
 Dean nods, licks and bites his bottom lip as Cas rolls his tongue and squeezes with his lips.
 “Suck, Cas, and bob,” Dean says, trying to stay still as Cas finds something like a rhythm.
 He pulls off breathless, but smiles. “Your dick is quite big— I, uh, I have to try again.”
 Dean chuckles. “Hey, look who’s talking, that monster between your legs is gonna be a full meal.”
 Cas blushes, but grabs Dean by the base and takes him even deeper. Dean’s starting to throb, the storm in his belly makes him thrust against Cas’ efforts, but he forces himself to keep it shallow.
 “You’re doing so good, babe, sucking me so good,” Dean murmurs, voice pitching higher with each wave of pleasure.
 Cas groans around Dean’s dick, tonguing the underneath as he dips his head down and up, down and up, dooooown and up. Dean’s right on the edge when Cas starts to gag. Dean catches himself a second too late from whining in defeat, but he gets Cas upright and coughing before it can go beyond repair.
 “Just breathe, it’s okay,” Dean says, watching Cas for any signs of regret or vomit.
 Cas clears his throat and takes big breaths through his nose, eyes wide with alarm.
 Dean hugs him around the shoulders and just squeezes until everything evens out. He doesn’t say anything, just brushes his lips along Cas’ hairline and waits it out.
 “Sorry,” Cas gasps out.
 “Sorry? Don’t be sorry— you don’t apologize for going whole ham on me like that, okay? We’re figuring shit out. There’s a learning curve to this, too, you know.” Dean says firmly, not making Cas face him just yet.
 Cas chuckles mirthlessly. “I do now.”
 Cas side eyes him sheepishly, but Dean just smiles and waggles his eyebrows. Cas rolls his eyes but lightens up the more Dean goads him with flirty faces.
 Dean kisses him softly, hands brushing over Cas’ face and down his neck until they start leaning back towards the pillows. Dean thinks about the skin mags shoved beneath his mattress and the lube he’s got in an old shoe box beneath that. He thinks about how none of that feels like this.
 Having Cas here, to himself, has been the true fantasy since Halloween. But this is real, and it’s happening. And Dean isn’t going to waste it.
 “Do you touch yourself?” Dean murmurs.
 Cas exhales and stretches back against the covers. “Sometimes, but I don’t have much privacy for anything elaborate.”
 Dean guessed as much.
 “How do you like it?” Dean asks as he reaches for Cas’ dick, just a gentle tug as if he’s gripping his shoulder in passing.
 “Harder,” Cas sighs, eyes cautious.
 Dean stops himself from rolling his eyes and squeezes as he starts to pump, leaning on his side as he watches Cas relax into his touch. He stops and licks his palm and over the pads of his fingers, easing the slide against Cas’ thickness.
 Cas groans at the wetness. “Faster, Dean.”
 Dean speeds up, dropping his free hand on Cas’ flat stomach and down to the ridge of his pelvis poking out. He keeps Cas’ face in his periphery but focuses his attention on the gorgeous body before him and the fat cock in his hand.
 “You’re so fucking hot like this,” Dean says, mesmerized by the straining muscles and the throbbing heat. “Wanna get you there, Cas. Let me?”
 Cas moans Dean’s name over the sound of CCR’s steady opening to Proud Mary.
 Dean kisses Cas’ chest and reaches down to cup his balls, stroking faster, careful to swipe the tip for a more natural glide. Dean looks over his shoulder and sees Cas watching him.
 “Like this?” Dean asks, voice as wrecked as Cas looks. Cas whimpers and bends in half around Dean’s hold, coming hot and hard all over Dean’s bed and hands.
 “Shit!”
 Dean almost giggles because Cas never swears. He strokes Cas through it, easing until Cas is whining from the contact. Dean kisses Cas’ shoulder and tugs the comforter out from under them, careful to avoid the mess and wipe his hands off at the same time.
 With just the sheets left on the bed, Dean falls beside Cas. Cradling him into the curve of his body, Dean tries to avoid direct ass-to-dick contact. He doesn’t want Cas to panic again.
 “You have incredibly strong hands,” Cas mutters into the pillows.
 Dean looks down and flexes his fingers. He’s never thought about his hands much, but he guesses Cas must be right. Years of working molded him into a very different animal from Cas, whose life is all Bible studies and textbooks.
 “You’re welcome,” Dean teases.
 Cas laughs, breathy and tender.
 Dean kisses his temple, gripping his chest and pulling him closer. They lay in the comfort of each other’s arms, letting the mixtape run out as they spoon and joke, eventually twisting beneath the top sheet.
 “When do you need to be home,” Dean asks against Cas’ chest, too content to even raise his head.
 “Don’t remind me,” Cas replies, reaching off the bed for his phone all the same. “Ugh! Probably should leave soon.”
 “How soon is soon?” Dean asks, sitting up while keeping the sheet bunched around his half-hard cock.
 “Seventeen minutes,” Cas replies offhandedly until he glances apologetically to Dean and starts to crawl out of bed.
 “Uh, where do you think you’re going?! I still get your naked ass in my bed for      at least    another ten minutes.” Dean grabs Cas’ elbow and drags him down on top of him.
 Cas smirks at Dean’s determination and shakes his head, snuggling closer. Then his hips slot against Dean’s poorly hidden erection.
 Dean hums noncommittally.
 Cas grinds down again, and Dean whines as he feels Cas’ growing interest.
 “Fuck! We really don’t have much time, man,” Dean warns, rocking against Cas. Cas yanks the sheet away, leaving Dean bare beneath him.
 “Next time,” Dean promises. “We’ll do more than the surface stuff, alright? Now I just want to feel you.”
 Cas nods, mouthing up Dean’s neck as they grip each other and stroke in incongruous rhythms.
 “I’m going to have to sit through dinner still smelling you on my skin,” Cas thinks out loud.
 “Good! Want you thinking about me while those assholes play house. Want you knowing I’ll be thinking about you— your mouth— your dick in my hands— in me— however you want, Cas.”
 Castiel gasps, but his hand moves faster on Dean’s shaft. “You want to take me?”
 “Cas!” Dean warns, too strung out after hours of build-up.
 “Dean,” Cas’ voice drops like a reprimand and Dean comes all over both of their stomachs.
 Too blissed out to keep jacking Cas off, Dean groans and then wiggles down to mouth at Cas’ dick. Half wild and desperate, Dean sucks Cas into the back of his throat.
 Cas, who is dumbfounded by Dean’s actions, keens at the new sensation of mouth and tongue and then comes again within moments. Dean doesn’t know if Cas is aware of how hungry he still is for him until he feels Cas tense when Dean catches Cas watching him lick his own spendings off Cas’ stomach.
 Cas twitches and moans a warbly, “oh, Lord!” They both freeze at his blasphemy.
 Dean looks up at him through heavy lashes, and Cas simply stares back. Dean kisses just below Cas’ navel and sits up, knees framing Cas’ thighs.
 “Let’s get you cleaned up.” Dean rockets off the bed and throws a towel around his hips. But he realizes he’s still a mess, so he tugs it up around his chest. He opens the door and quickly ducks out, closing it tight behind him.
 He rushes to grab an extra towel and a washcloth from the bathroom between his and Sam’s rooms. Dean’s gone less than three minutes, but in the moments they’re apart, he starts to worry that it was too much too soon.
 Dean doesn’t know if he can go back from this now. If he can keep it strictly PG since he’s gotten to truly worship Cas’ body. Now that he knows how it feels to just      be     in his presence, the connection, the comfort. Dean misses him already.
 He wipes off his belly and rinses out the cloth and adds some hand soap for good measure. He clutches the fresh towel to his chest and rushes back to his door, knocking.
 “It’s me,” he says and slips inside.
Tumblr media
               Honey tell me how your love runs true
      And how I can always count on you
     To be there when the bullets fly
     I'd run across the river just to hold you tonight
 Dean sits in the impala, anxious. Cas is coming to dinner. And not just at the trailer with Sammy. He’s been personally invited to Seder by Uncle Rufus. And well, to say that’s a big deal is an understatement.
 Bobby and Rufus have been a thing as long as Dean can remember. From what he gathers, since the mid-80s after Bobby’s wife, Karen, passed and they met at a grief support group. The way the men always bickered, it took Dean into his teen years to realize how and how deeply they loved one another.
 Their home was probably the safest place for Dean to come to terms with his own varying sexuality. And after John disappeared for good, they were the only family he and Sam had left.
     The months with Cas start to fly by, between their ever-increasing class loads and the necessity of sneaking around, it’s spring before either of them realize it. Actual spring, not whatever the school tries to pass for it giving its spring break in mid-March, either.
 Dean knows Cas is curious about Rufus’ faith, among other things. He just hopes Cas’ blunt inquisitiveness isn’t met with mockery. He exhales and counts down the minutes until Cas is out of his last class of the day. He wonders what excuse Cas gave his parents for missing dinner with the family.
 He hates having to be a secret.
 With Cas’ family being so prominent and his father’s business at stake, Cas knows he has to lay low until he’s done with school. Because he’s on a scholarship for one thing, and another he doesn’t want to hurt his siblings or bring further scrutiny on them. Anna especially has had many struggles with mental illness that she’s had to fight without professional help because their parents insist it's a matter of faith and devotion, not brain chemistry.
 Dean has to bite his tongue so often that he’s gotten used to the taste of his own blood. But this is not his battle to fight. He’s there as backup only. He lets Cas lead the way, which he always does with compassion. Even when Cas is asked to pray at services Dean’s attended or the occasional family meal, Cas always prays for the lost or the less fortunate. He believes in the love of God in a way his parents and their judgment never could.
 He’d probably make a good priest, or pastor, whatever. Dean wonders which churches even let gay people be ordained. He bets there are some out there. He wants that for Cas, for him to find true community someday. Something like the crotchety old guys who wouldn’t pass for queer until they’re caught kissing in the toolshed. The type of safety and home Dean’s had the better half of his life.
 But he’ll do it and keep doing it as long as it keeps Cas safe. Cas told him about what happens when queer people are exposed within his family’s circle of friends, or anyone, really not willing to fully conform. Either the kids, because they’re usually too young to be able to fend for themselves, are sent to those awful camps. Or the entire family is blacklisted. Jobs are lost and all sources of charity or socializing suddenly dry up. Then they have to start over, somewhere else.
 Faith is something too commercial and too big for Dean to grasp most days. But he likes the ritual of it all, the tradition and the history. He knows Cas will love Rufus’ Seder. He just hopes Rufus and Bobby like Cas, too.
 “Hello, Dean,” comes Cas’ standard greeting as he pries open the door.
 “Heya, handsome. How was class?” Dawn checks his mirror and waits for the parking lot to clear as Cas tells him about his day. They hold hands across the bench seat because it’s dark enough for it to be hidden from any passersby.
 It’s a long drive this time of night, rush hour pushing them past sundown, which Dean knows will earn him a reprimand. But he’s not worried about himself. Sam was with Bobby helping out at the garage for some part-time money, so Dean knows at least they’ll be on time for dinner.
 Rufus will just have to deal with them crashing in.
 When they pull up to the well-worn bungalow, Dean takes his hand back to kill the engine and wipe his palms off on his thighs.
 “So, uh, this is Rufus and Bobby’s place. Dinner’s probably already started— so we’ll just go in quietly, especially if they’re singing. Neither of the bastards can carry a tune— but it’s tradition, so.”
 “Understandable, as you know, I’m not one to judge someone’s singing voice,” Cas even self-deprecates with empathy.
 “Okay, but, before we head in, can I?” Dean leans in and kisses his boyfriend without waiting for an answer. Cas slides closer across the seat and enters Dean’s mouth, thoroughly agreeing with the further delay.
 Dean breaks the kiss to breathe, resting his forehead against Cas’ as they both regain their composure.
 “Dean?”
 “Yeah?”
 “We should go inside.”
 “Yeah, I know— I just—.” Dean squeezes Cas’ forearm and searches his eyes in the darkness of the car.
 “I missed you, too,” Cas says softly, eyes big and hand warm against Dean’s cheek.
 They kiss once more for good measure and head inside.
   All things considered, it was a good night. Cas’ cheeks are flushed from the wine, and he’s grinning as Sam and Bobby regale him with the story of Dean’s last significant other to make it long enough to attend a family gathering, Cassie.
Except Cassie hadn’t been invited to Sam’s birthday dinner, she just showed up.
 “So get this— we’re grilling out back— about to start a game of two-hand touch with a bunch of middle school guys and —,” Sam sets the scene.
 And Bobby cuts in gesturing wildly, “a flipping diva. Hair out to here, walks in.”
 “She had more makeup on than I’ve seen on professional drag queens,” Rufus adds as he clears their dishes.
 “Okay, let’s be nice,” Dean interjects. “It was bad timing— I’ll give you that.”
 “It was weird, Dean! It was my party. I was twelve!” Sam argues.
 Cas chuckles and watches Dean as he shrugs, Dean ducks his head and tries to hide the heat in his cheeks.
“Anyway, this is better, right? See!” Dean asks everyone with   insistent eyes. ‘Don’t embarrass him like you’re dragging her,’ he   silently begs.
 “Much,” Sam agrees. “But I already know Cas– more or less.”
 “What is it you’re going to school for again?” Bobby asks carefully, popping some leftover matza into his mouth. Dean only eats the stuff when he has to, but Bobby doesn’t let any go to waste. The conversation flows easily and before long Cas needs to get home.
 “Thank you so much Mr. Turner for having me— I hope the second night goes just as well for you all.” Castiel shakes Rufus’ hand.
 Rufus preens under all the attention, earring sparkling in the glow from the front porch light. “I’m sorry you can’t make it, but there’s always next year, am I right?”
 Cas, clearly surprised, smiles all the same. Dean scratches the back of his neck and waits for the goodbyes to be over.
 “Alright, young man, drive safe,” Rufus says to Dean. He can’t remember Rufus ever using his actual name. He’s always ‘hey you’, ‘punk’, or if he’s been on his best behavior, ‘young man’.
 Dean shakes Rufus’ hand and leans in for a quick hug. Sam follows behind shaking hands and nodding his gratitude.
 Dean glances at Sam to sit in the backseat as they make their way down the driveway. Sam pretends to think about it, the sacrifice of giving up shotgun is a pretty big deal when it comes to being sixteen in your brother’s legacy car.
 But before it gets too noticeable that they are silently arguing, Sam relents and lets Cas have the cherished spot. Dean isn’t impressed, but he mouths a ‘thank you’, though it could be interpreted another way. He slides into the driver’s seat and grins over at Cas. Cas smiles knowingly back, and Dean cranks the volume.
 They don’t kiss goodnight, and not just for Sam’s sake either. It’s just too rushed, and Cas has to transform back into the stoic machine he is around his family. Dean hates these moments the most. Not just parting with Cas but watching him bury so much of himself.
 “Thanks for the ride,” Cas says sadly before ducking out of the open passenger side door. He nods to Sam and marches dutifully up his front steps. Dean ignores Sam when he turns down the music and settles into the front seat. Something pulls at Dean’s insides, but he stays put watching Cas. Then Cas turns around, waves, and opens the door to return to that damned prison.
 Dean slowly blinks back to reality and puts the car into gear. He drives home on autopilot and Sam’s smart enough to leave him to his thoughts. When he gets home, Dean reworks some details on a design for his automation class. Then tries to get ahead on some reading for a seminar he’s taking. Nothing sticks, but maybe it will come back when he needs it.
 Guess he’s an optimist now.
Tumblr media
        A week later, Dean chances a phone call when he knows Cas will still be on campus, but out of the obligation of any classroom.
“Hey— this is stupid—- but I was wondering if you— maybe— like this summer— when the semester is over, and classes aren’t so crazy—- I talked to Sam and he’s cool with it if you help out. But like— no pressure or anything—- and only if you wanted to. It would be awesome. So, do you think—- maybe— you’d like to move in with me? I mean with us?” Dean hadn’t rambled this long since he tried to talk their way out of a parking ticket for a passed-out John, in middle school.
 He must have lost oxygen to his brain because when he hears Cas on the other end of the line, it’s only a thready plea of his name.
 “No, listen, I know you’ve got your scholarship shit, but you can get grants and a job at the student aid office or tutor for money or something. They can’t stop you from finishing school—- they can only make it a little bit worse. But everything else can be better, Cas, I swear.” Dean wasn’t supposed to be so desperate about this, but he really wants Cas to be happy. Well, safe and out and happy, but still.
 “Dean—- we’ve only been dating for a few months,” Cas sighs. “They’re my family forever.”
 “They don’t have to be,” Dean says without thinking. He closes his eyes, takes a breath, and then rubs his forehead with the back of the hand that’s holding the phone. “Not like you have to cut ties with them or anything— but, uh— well, Bobby’s always said family don’t end in blood. So, you know— you’ve got options.”
 The seconds of silence coming from Cas’ side of the call last into the next century.
 “And what happens if we break up, Dean?’ Cas doesn’t sound upset, but he still isn’t sold on anything.
 Dean wasn’t expecting to go down that particular trail of possibility, and he flounders for a response. Both hurt and worried that Cas would think so little of him, of them.
 Dean looks around the trailer’s living/dining/kitchen area and wonders what this could look like to Castiel’s eyes. He thought it was freedom, but maybe it’s just a trash hole to him like it was to the wrestling team and half of Dean’s exes.
“We’re both really young to be making such decisions,” Cas adds lightly.
 “Look— I just want you to be happy. Are you happy, Cas?” Dean lays it out.
 Cas exhales and shifts on the line, Dean can practically hear the gears in his head whirling a mile a minute. When he doesn’t answer, Dean presses on.
 “Do you think you could be happy with me?”
 “That’s not fair,” Cas counters. “You know this isn’t just about me. Would you leave Sam behind if it meant you could be happy?”
Dean locks his jaw, bitter and righteous. “No, but–”
 “I may not be responsible for my siblings the way you are for Sam, but I do love them, Dean.”
 “I know.” Dean feels it all slipping away from him. He doesn’t know what to say or do to make it better. He wishes he could take the entire conversation back.
 “For what it’s worth—- when I’m with you—- that’s the happiest I’ve ever been.”
 Dean pinches the tears out of his eyes and bleats out something like a chuckle. “Yeah, well, that’s great.”
 “Dean?”
 “Hm?”
 “Do you work tonight?” It’s such an innocent question it throws Dean for a loop.
 He looks at the clock on the microwave and sighs. “Uh, yeah, got like an hour before Sam’ll be home and then I’ll head in after we eat.”
 “What are you making?” Cas’ voice is soothing, and Dean hates him for being able to distract him like this because it’s fucking working.
 “Uh, just hotdogs and beans—- didn’t want to make a huge mess.”
 “Because it’s on Sam to clean up and he’s probably got homework,” Cas concludes.
 “Didn’t want him to leave it for me in the morning is all,” Dean reasons.
 “Of course,” Cas agrees, knowing Dean’s thought process better than Dean would like.
 “How late is the library open?” Dean turns the curiosity back on Cas.
 “Ten, you know that: why?”
 Dean shrugs though Cas can’t see him. “Was hoping to see you, maybe, if you’ll still be there when my shift starts.”
 “Okay.”
   Castiel is waiting for Dean in the parking lot closest to the Macleod Library. He walks him to the maintenance staff office so Dean’s not late for his shift. They shake hands and pat each other on the back goodnight. Just guys being bros.
Dean doesn’t mention the sheet of folded-up paper Cas passes  him. It’s just a time and place, but it brightens Dean’s mood better  than any placation or even kiss probably could at that moment.
 His shift has never been longer.
 Just before dawn, Dean finds Cas right where he had said he’d be. On one of the stone benches lining the small pond on Cas’ department’s side of campus.
 “Hello, Dean.”
 “Got your note— a bit cryptic— but I chose to interpret it like a middle school note— do you like me? Check yes or no.” Dean saunters closer, his hands fit around Cas’ hips beneath where his hands are wedged into his pockets.
 “What are you checking?”
 Dean kisses him because they are alone and because it’s his answer. Cas hums and pulls back. “Sorry, I didn’t quite catch that.”
 Dean rolls his eyes at the lame joke, but kisses him again, deeper and more forceful until they both have to pull apart for air, grinning and giddy.
 “How was work?” Cas presents one of his hands for Dean to thread their fingers together.
“Work— but I managed to get through. Might have been a little distracted.”
 “Sorry about that,” Cas smiles mischievously.
 “No, you’re not,” Dean murmurs against his temple, kissing him softly. “What’s up?”
 Dean is dead on his feet, but he won’t be able to sleep until Cas tells him what all this build-up was for. Cas goes still, but he stays close.
 “I wanted to tell you something—- and ask you for a favor,” Cas explains carefully, not making eye contact.
 Dean watches the side of his face but aims for casualness. “Okay, a little dramatic, but shoot.”
 Cas does face him then, eyes bright and brows high in hope or apology, Dean’s not sure. “It’s about your offer— sort of.”
 Dean waits, but his palm is getting sweaty underneath Cas’ insistent grip.
 “I want to be with you. I do. But since I can’t—- fully— until I graduate and Samandriel is an adult—- I want to promise to be true to you until we can both be our real selves.”
 Dean squints and looks at Cas.
 “Are you breaking up with me?”
 Cas glares. “You are an idiot. Are you seriously so tired right now that you interpreted me pledging myself to you as me breaking up with you?!”
 Dean doesn’t know what to say, so he puts on his best adorable apology face, essentially saying ‘I’m dumb but pretty.’
 Cas rolls his eyes.
 “You’re impossible.”
 Dean reaches up to hold Cas’ face with both hands. “That’s already where I’ve been, Cas. That’s all relationships are— loyalty and devotion.”
 Cas leans into Dean’s touch. “No, Dean. Maybe it’s not common in the secular world. But promising ourselves to each other is kind of a big deal with the people of my church.”
 Dean drops his hands and steps back. “Are you proposing?”
 “No-o,” Cas says it like it’s a question.
 Dean grabs his hair and has a mini freak-out. But turns back and looks Cas in the eye even though he’s terrified. “Holy shit, you’re proposing.”
 “Dean, I’m not proposing,” Cas says more sternly.
 “And you were freaking out about me asking you to move in together.”
 “To be fair, moving in together doesn’t happen in my experience until after marriage.”
 “Yeah, but like half the people you know don’t even kiss before marriage,” Dean snarks.
 Cas grimaces, but nods. Dean leans back in. “We’ve done a helluva lot more than kiss.”
 “Your point?” Cas asks with a fragile sort of firmness.
 Dean laces his hands behind Cas’ neck. “You are proposing.”
 Cas, once again, rolls his eyes and tugs Dean closer by one of his front pockets. “Call it a pre-engagement if you must, but only if you swear to it, too.”
 All the teasing leaves Dean’s body. Instead, he breathes deep and stares into Cas’ hesitant eyes. “I love you, you know that right? I mean— we don’t say it, but you know that about me.”
 Cas softens in Dean’s arms, nodding as tears start to build in the corners of his gorgeous eyes.
 “I’m yours, Cas. As long as it takes, okay?”
 Cas swallows thickly and grins. “Okay.”
 Dean looks down at Cas’ hands and between their bodies. “I feel unprepared for this.”
 Cas cocks his head. “What are you talking about?”
 Dean flexes his fingers and spots his solution. “I feel like I should be giving you something.”
 “Dean, it’s not like I brought you anything.”
 But Dean’s already untying one of his necklaces. It’s made of rough leather with a few beads knotted onto it. He bought it because he thought it was the right colors for the bisexual flag, but there’s a green one that throws off his reasoning.
 “Here,” Dean insists, taking his mother’s ring off his right hand and threading it down the twine. “That should work— long enough to hide it, but still with you at all times.”
 Cas doesn’t speak, just swallows and nods, turning so Dean can tie it on. Cas cradles the metal loop against his chest like he’s making the pledge all over again.
 Dean beams at him, never realizing how satisfying it’d be to call Cas his. To have a claim on him, and his heart.
 “Looks good on ya.”
 “Thank you, Dean. I’ll— I’ll think of something to give you. Okay?”
 Dean nods, hugging Cas close and whispering in his ear, “we’ve got plenty of time for that, okay?”
 “We do, don’t we?” Cas grins his nose-scrunching grin and kisses Dean with more teeth than tongue.
Tumblr media
    Six years later
The arena is packed with people, families and friends filling the lower levels for the first round of afternoon graduations. Dean scans the crowd looking for Bobby and Rufus because, frankly, he’s sick of telling people the seats on either side of him are taken.
 Then there’s the guy one chair over who won’t stop announcing that his cousin is getting his doctorate and how cute it is that Dean’s kid brother is only getting his bachelor’s. Dean isn’t going to let him bate him, it’s neither the time nor the place. But he clenches his fist anyway, just for something to pass the time.
Finally, Dean spots Rufus stiff-arming his way through the  masses. He doesn’t say, “move, I’m gay.” But Dean imagines he is. Once  they’re within earshot, he realizes Rufus is playing another card  entirely.
“Senior citizens coming through!”
 Dean picks up his coat and stands up to shake his uncles’ hands.
 “Have trouble finding the place?” Dean teases.
 “Don’t get him started,” Bobby warns, sitting in the now open middle seat. Leaving the far seat for Rufus, right next to Mr. Obnoxious himself.
 Rufus settles into his seat and does a double take. “Don’t I know you?”
 Gabriel rolls his eyes and acts offended. “Yeah, you do, Gramps. Forget your readers at home, huh?”
 Dean tries to stifle his laugh, muttering, “he’s your problem now.”
The ceremony begins with a quick introduction and only two reasonably long speeches. The graduate students are announced first, but Cas is in the last row. It feels like Dean has been waiting for this moment as long as Cas has. He’s certainly put in the hours of research beside him. Fed and watered and supported them while Cas TA'd, wrote, and argued his thesis.
 Dean shoves down the nervousness and focuses on the pride. There were only six doctoral candidates, and five made it across the stage that day. Dean couldn’t help but scream his head off when they announced, “Doctor Castiel Milton-Winchester.”
 Everyone in the row beside him joined in, from a very pregnant Anna and her husband to Samandriel and Jess, Sam’s girlfriend whose nursing school graduation was in two and a half hours. Their tribe went hard.
 Then they all had to wait for Sam’s turn near the end of the undergrads.
 Dean doesn’t think it’s possible to be any prouder than he is at that moment. Seeing Sam’s floppy hair tucked underneath his square cap brings tears to his eyes. His brother was gonna be a lawyer someday, and not too far in the future Dean and Cas will be at another one of these robe parades.
 Who knows, maybe Jess will still be around for it, too.
 Dean grins and sniffles, because, yeah, Sam is graduating, but Dean helped get him there, damn it.
 Not bad for two trailer park kids.
 After the official time for applause, once the final name is called, the crowd returns to chaos. Dean bides his time, knowing Cas and Sam will find each other and meet up with him at the impala, sooner or later.
 He watches his extended family gather their belongings and trudge outside into the spring sunshine. Rufus is loudly impatient the whole way. While Anna is almost to the point of waddling. Dean can’t wait to meet their niece already. Life is starting to slow down it seems.
 Maybe they’ll finally be able to take the honeymoon they’ve been putting off for the past two years.
 From somewhere behind Dean, Cas drawls a pathetic, “hey there, cowboy.”
 Dean spins on the spot, smirking. “What’s up, Doc?”
 “Really, Dean?! Bugs Bunny?!” Sam admonishes.
 “Shut your face, Sammy,” Dean snips, not breaking eye contact with his husband.
 Sam groans and turns to find Jessica. Dean’ll properly congratulate him later with the new juicer Sam’s been talking about, none too subtly, since the air fryer Dean got him for his birthday.
 “Ready to celebrate your momentous accomplishment?” Dean asks, sliding in close and slipping his hands inside the now open sides of Cas’ faux satin gown.
 “Please tell me there’ll be food. I woke up late and was too distracted to have breakfast,” Cas grumbles on Dean’s shoulder, shuffling his feet as if they’re dancing.
 “Okay, but you never eat breakfast,” Dean argues since he was the source of the distraction in the first place.
 “Because I eat between classes at like ten, Dean!” Cas bellyaches.
 Dean sighs and gives him an unimpressed grimace. “Yes, there’ll be food, Christ. I’m not a sadist.”
 They walk hand-in-hand to the car, Sam and Jess trailing behind them.
 “Okay, quick lunch, and then back for round two?” Dean asks as everyone finds their respective doors. They all nod in agreement and Dean ducks into the car.
 A memory of Cas’ first ride in the impala pops into Dean’s head. Having Sam in the backseat with Jess, it’s like looking in a funhouse mirror of that night. Sober and Garth-less, Dean chuckles.
 “What?” Cas asks, amused.
 Dean shakes his head. “It’s nothing. Just funny how everything works out in the end.”
 “Good things do happen, Dean,” Cas agrees.
 “Yeah, tell me about it. I got you, didn’t I?” Dean revs the engine and pulls into the line of traffic making their way out of the parking garage.

DC Cinematic Universe, Phase One Plan
Doing some research ahead of where I'm at with the villain blogs, here is my expected plan for Phase One of this theoretical cinematic universe:
THE FLASH - During a freak lightning storm, police scientist Barry Allen and his girlfriend's little brother Wally both end up developing super speed. As a result, a local gang breaks into a research lab and steals a number of high-tech weapons to be able to fight back.
Starring: Barry Allen/Flash, Wally West/Kid Flash, Iris West, Joe West, Ralph Dibny, Sue Dibny, Len Snart/Captain Cold, Digger Harkness/Captain Boomerang, Mick Rory/Heat Wave, Mark Mardon/Weather Wizard, James Jesse/Trickster, Hartley Rathaway/Pied Piper.
MARTIAN MANHUNTER - A Martian warrior finds himself stranded on Earth after being teleported there by an old scientist. Now hunted by intergalactic "peacekeepers" called the Manhunters, the Martian befriends a former marine named John Stewart, who helps him find his way home again.

Starring: Jackson Hyde/Aqualad, Garth/Tempest, David Hyde/Black Manta, Black Jack, Eel, Charybdis, Scylla, Scavenger, Cal Durham, Atlan/Dead King.
GREEN ARROW - Rogue vigilante Oliver Queen finds himself captured by the government and forced into Amanda Waller's Suicide Squad, including such members as Dinah Lance, Roy Harper, and Slade Wilson. They are sent after foreign noble Count Vertigo, who poses a threat to the United States. After the job is done, Oliver betrays Waller and puts his life on the line to get himself, Dinah, and Roy out of the squad.
Starring: Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, Dinah Lance/Black Canary, Roy Harper/Speedy, Amanda Waller, Slade Wilson/Deathstroke, Count Vertigo, likely other members of the Suicide Squad.
JUSTICE LEAGUE - Earth finds itself attacked by a race of aliens called Kryptonians, endowed with powers beyond any human. Bruce Wayne (who has been acting as a Nick Fury figure throughout the previous movies) brings together Princess Diana, J'onn J'onzz, Barry Allen, and Hal Jordan to help fight against them. Arthur Curry also joins, having been caught up in the initial attack alongside Diana as they both fought the villainous Atlantean, Queen Clea. Oliver Queen receives an invitation as well, but turns it down before ultimately helping in the end. Other characters like John Stewart also pitch in, resulting in John receiving a Green Lantern ring in the end. As the battle rages, Bruce investigates a twenty+ year old report of a Kryptonian ship crash-landing in Kansas, leading him to Clark Kent.
Starring: Clark Kent/Superman, Bruce Wayne/Batman, Princess Diana/Wonder Woman, Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, Barry Allen/Flash, Arthur Curry/Aquaman, J'onn J'onzz/Martian Manhunter, General Zod, Faora-Ul, Ursa, Non, Jax-Ur, Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, John Stewart, Lois Lane, Martha Kent, Jonathan Kent, various other supporting cast, and Queen Clea.
TEEN TITANS - After witnessing an alien girl taken captive, Bruce Wayne's former protegee Dick Grayson begins investigating HIVE, a special "academy" where superpowered teens are taken by the government and trained to work for them. Wally West, Jackson Hyde, and Roy Harper likewise start investigating for similar reasons. Among the students they rescue are the alien girl Starfire, Cyborg, Beast Boy, and Raven.
Starring: Dick Grayson/Nightwing, Roy Harper/Speedy, Wally West/Kid Flash, Jackson Harper/Aqualad, Koriandr/Starfire, Victor Stone/Cyborg, Garfield Logan/Beast Boy, Rachel Roth/Raven, Slade Wilson/Deathstroke, Amanda Waller, HIVE staff.
And that's it. The ordering of the first six can be subject to change, but the two big crossovers remain the same. What do you think? Would you watch this as a series?

The Boys Theory post: Who are the Boys?
What do I mean? Well, Maeve is obviously Wonder Woman. Homelander is basically Superman. Soldier Boy is clearly Captain America, etc. What about the Boys, though? What character influences can we see with them? Now, there will be spoilers for the show and to a lesser extent, the comic, this is your only warning.
First, there’s William “Billy” Butcher. Now, his name alone is pretty brutal and he’s got a good reason to do all the quasi-evil things he does like forcing Termite to OD to catch him or ripping out Ryan’s heart just to keep him safer. The character in the comics is most reminiscent of Frank Castle, or “The Punisher” if you prefer, specifically Garth Ennis’ (The series writer) run the character. I’m just saying. “Butcher.” “Punisher.” The heavy reliance on black, the brutal low-road to being a good guy path both walk, the fact that both were normal people wronged by the world around them until they became who they were. Etc. Billy takes his cues from Frank, simple as.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, I think Kimiko would be a smart place to go just because she’s the one I have the clearest links to make with. She’s a brutal, skilled fighter, believes herself to be a monster partly becasue of something that was forced on her, and is super loyal to her friends and associates, even after the death of her sibling... She’s the Settings Black Widow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, as for the other members of The Boys: Hughie is an honest, normal man, living a relatively average life in normal society. He’s relatively weak with some serious demons hiding underneath that he just doesn’t act on until one fateful day after being caught up with criminals, he fully snaps... Hugh Campbell, you are the “Killing Joke” Joker. Just remove the chemicals from the story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frenchie, on the other hand, is the team’s designated Supe killer. Not because he’s super strong or shoots eye lasers, but because he can build almost anything needed to kill a supe with enough time and resources. He’s also involved in the manufacture and sale of illegal guns and modifications thereof and is a decent rifleman and was, for a while at least, just a normal assassin/gun for hire. My best guess is that Frenchy is basically Slade Wilson mixed with Bruce Wayne. AKA: Deathstroke mixed with Batman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mother’s Milk, or MM for short, is kind of the glue that helps hold the boys together, and he’s also a lot more grounded than his compatriots in that he’s a man with some trauma but had a relatively good life until Butcher dragged him back in. He was helping people reform to be passable members of society until that point, I’ll remind you.  ... And that leads me to the following conclusion: MM is the one character I can’t find ANY cleanish parallels with. I don’t know what to say about him other than he’s his own man. At the moment, at least. If anyone else has any ideas, I’m willing to hear them, at least.
Tumblr media
Now, this was mostly for fun, but I heard Butcher in specific was somewhat built upon the rough skeleton of the Punisher and I wanted to see what else made some kind of sense for the other members of his little club. I’m not saying these are definitive, perfect, or even intentional. These are just some things I noticed while watching and kind of wanted to vent. I hope you enjoyed it.

Spencer Meets Wayne and Garth (excerpt from #spencergregmovie
Bastille:(Speaking loudly) The Leaders of The Horde for the past 15 years Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar!
(Wayne and Garth get down on their knees and bow to Spencer)
Wayne and Garth (in unison): We're not worthy! We're not worthy! We're not worthy!
Spencer: Of course you are silly men pop a squat there are plenty of pillows
(Wayne and Garth pull up two pillows and sit in lotus position next to Spencer and Grunt)
Wayne: Let me bring you up to speed. Garth and I used to live in Aurora, Illinois where we had a popular cable TV show called Wayne's World.
(Wayne and Garth sing the theme song sporting air guitars)
Wayne: I met this bodacious babe who was a singer with a band and she broke my heart when she wouldn't marry me. She almost married her Agent instead and went back to Cambodia to take care of her sick Grandmother. So Garth and I left and went to L.A. to find a new life.
Garth: Marriage is punishment for shoplifting in some countries.
Wayne: Shyeah and monkeys might fly out of my butt!
Spencer and Grunt laugh
Spencer: How did you meet my Great Uncle?
Wayne: Well, we got jobs at his restaurant as Busboys. I have had many jobs in my life, but we are still working at Veggies after 15 years. I'll show you my extensive name tag and hairnet collection sometime.
Garth: So the Guru let us camp out on his property because we had no money for an apartment. He had Hugh bring us leftovers from dinner we heated up on our camp stove.
Wayne: We also ordered Chinese takeout.
10.
(acting like he is on the phone)
Wayne: We will have the cum of sum yung gai please!
Spencer and Grunt laugh
Garth: That was Haiku.
Wayne: So anyway, the Guru's show got really hot and others started coming to the house and camping out. He started teaching Garth and I to be Gurus someday. Excellent!
Garth: Zang!
(Wayne and Garth make thumbs up gesture and smile)
Garth: Zang! Oh that's excellent in Cantonese.
Wayne: We don't have your looks, we don't have your money, but we are great listeners, and I can play the guitar and sing around a campfire like a fiend. Garth and I and The Horde will be your loyal servants until we go up to the stairway to heaven.
Garth: The Horde are mostly college students who are really smart and vegan and want to live their dreams. They will be the next generation of Scientists, Artists, Filmmakers and Actors.

fandom v canon common misconceptions? if you would ofc ❤️
Absolutely! This is suuuch a broad topic and I could go a million directions here, so I’m just gonna name a bunch of canon things that are often forgotten or misrepresented in batfam fanon. Bullet point listy time, though some of these could be full deep dive posts of their own. I’ve decided not to get into characterization on this post, so I’m trying to keep to objective facts/events.
source: As usual, all my claims are based on post-Crisis continuity (1986-2011), which is the best, but which I also think is the base for most fanworks. Don’t get me wrong; some people are explicitly writing for new52 or rebirth, and pretty much everyone has a least a little new52 influence, but the archetypal fanon batfam references a lot of post-Crisis events and post-Crisis backstories.
(remind me at some point to write a primer post on DC continuities, crises, and the multiverse because I think everyone deserves to understand what tf ‘post-Crisis’ means)
obviously y’all are welcome to ignore as much of this as they want in fanworks and make their own fun, so please do not respond in bad faith and think i’m trying to command you all. As always, this got long:
outside of the batfam
DC heroes are a very tight-knit and interconnected community. There are a lot of superhero teams with constantly changing rosters, the entire community semi-regularly comes together to defend against huge world-ending threats, and you can pretty much ‘six degrees of kevin bacon’ from any one character to another (assuming they haven’t personally worked together!)
Dick considers the Titans his second family--which includes not just Wally, but people like Donna Troy, Roy Harper, Garth, Koriand’r, Vic Stone, Joey Wilson, etc. That team has reformed like five times.
Tim spent plenty of time with Young Justice, then weekends with the Teen Titans.
Cassandra worked with the Outsiders for a while.
Barbara’s biggest priority is absolutely fuckin’ not Batman, but her own team, the Birds of Prey, where she also has her closest friendships.
....tl;dr: these people have significant lives and important loved ones outside of their families
While we’re at it, the batfam (or bat team, depending on how you define “batfam”) also includes/included characters like Huntress and Azrael, and regular allies in the Birds of Prey, the Outsiders, Catwoman, Jason Bard, and various magicians
Dick’s Titans are based in NYC, Tim’s Teen Titans are based in San Francisco, and Jump City only exists in the animated show.
Nanda Parbat is not the base of the League of Assassins. Nanda Parbat has multiple times been attacked by the League and is very much against it. (Also it’s a super special magical place but LOOk that is far outside the bounds of this post.)
legal & living situations
Dick has only lived in Gotham when he was Robin or Batman. He is never based in Gotham as Nightwing; he just sometimes comes to visit and/or help with major issues.
Dick has lived in NYC at least as much as Bludhaven. He was in NYC during Jason’s entire tenure as Robin. He only moved to Bludhaven after Tim became Robin, and the city was completely destroyed before Damian ever appeared (and Dick returned to NYC in the meantime).
None of the batkids have lived together in the manor while Bruce was around*. Dick and Jason both lived essentially as only children. Damian started living in Gotham only after Bruce vanished. Tim left shortly after Damian arrived. Dick and Damian moved to the penthouse after Bruce vanished. They are all family, but none of them are these perfect archetypical siblings.
(*The exception to this is a short period of time where Tim and Cass theoretically would have both been living in the manor, but there was never a comic that showed them together, and Cass was rarely acknowledged by then.)
Tim, as discussed here, went to boarding school before Robin. He wasn’t spending time alone at home.
Tim didn’t move next door to Wayne Manor until after becoming Robin.
Tim’s mom died shortly after he was introduced, but his dad was alive for the majority of his time as Robin. He once had a real laugh when someone mistakenly thought Batman was his dad.
Cass also knew the bats for years before being adopted (shortly after Tim).
Cass was kept isolated by her father during her childhood, then ran away when she was 8 and remained on her own until reaching Gotham.
Barbara is at least as much of a mother-figure to Cass as Bruce is a father-figure. For a while, Cass lived in the clock tower with her.
Stephanie and Barbara are absolutely not Bruce’s kids, and both have single parents trying very hard for them--Crystal Brown having pulled herself together and improved into a good mom during Steph’s adolescence.
Jim is technically Barbara’s adoptive father, originally her uncle, who took her in after her bio parents died.
Dick continued to be Batman even after Bruce returned, and he and Damian and sometimes Alfred continued living together in the penthouse while Bruce traveled (also sometimes with Alfred). There were double Batman team-ups.
I am begging y’all to let a woman exist
There has never ever been a time when the batfamily exclusively consisted of Bruce, Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damian. Barbara has been a big part of the team since her introduction. Cass and Steph (and Helena Bertinelli!) were major players well before Jason came back to life or Damian was introduced. The Robins include Steph. Bruce’s kids include Cass. Team Bat includes everyone listed above.
Dick is incredibly close with platonic soulmate Donna Troy. Dick has a strong friendship with Babs even after they broke up. Dick was fundamentally changed as a person by his relationship with Kory. And that’s not including Lilith Clay, Bridget Clancy, Amy Rohrbach, Raven, Supergirl...
Stephanie was one of the most important people in Tim’s life. He also very closely bonded with Cassie Sandsmark when they went through a lot of grief together.
Damian has a little brother/big sister relationship with Steph, one of the few people he gets along with.
More importantly, all these woman have interesting stories on their own too--Cass struggling to relate to others and feel worthy of good things; Steph finding a love of helping others and grappling with her need for approval; Babs remaking herself stronger than before; Helena having the exact story everyone wishes Jason would have.
Cass is not in the habit of solving others’ emotional issues. Cass is pretty preoccupied with her own emotional issues--and one of her major struggles actually lies in difficulty understanding people. Her body language reading can tell her the broad strokes of what someone is feeling, but not the details, and certainly not the why.
miscellany
Stop! Making! Dick! A! Cop! What I said about people being free to do what they want and enjoy fanon is still true of everything else on this list, but I have decided to suspend it for this bullet point. I am now ordering you. Stop it. Dick became a cop one (1) time, for the specific reasoning that Bludhaven’s force was ultra-mega corrupt and he thought he would only be able to take them down from the inside. Think of it like some spy shit if that helps. And stoooooooop treating cop as a viable career path for this good man.
Dick’s other jobs include bartender, children’s gymnastics teacher, museum curator, and a period of time where he just decided to copy Bruce in the idle rich heir thing.
Dick has no strong attachment to cereal.
Tim has no strong attachment to coffee.
Steph likes waffles, but not to any absurd degree.
Beyond just shortened names (like “Cass”), no one in the batfam is regularly referred to by other nicknames.
As discussed here, Tim never took pictures of Batman and Robin as a kid.
Tim looked up to both previous Robins, but his most beloved and idolized Robin was undoubtedly Dick.
Lucius Fox runs Wayne Enterprises, no matter who is nominally in charge. Tim became CEO “in title only,” and was never really shown working in the office--let alone going into work every day. He pretty much just handles his Neon Knights charity initiative.
Ra’s al Ghul planned to body-snatch Damian (after Ra’s died in a way the pit couldn’t fix) to keep himself immortal. I’m not sure if he ever actually intended his “heir” to take over the League.
#controversy
Dick and Jason had a completely friendly relationship while Jason was Robin.
Almost everyone got along with Jason as Robin, in fact. He worked with the Titans multiple times and it was all chill.
People were not en masse declaring Tim crazy and delusional for thinking Bruce was alive. Absolutely no one ever suggested Arkham. Also, he didn’t really...explain why he thought Bruce was alive? to anyone?
Tim was never shunned or pushed away by his family after Damian arrived. He ran away to find Bruce on his own--despite Dick trying to convince him to stay--and quickly reintegrated into the family when he came back.
Post-crisis/pre-flashpoint, Jason was a mass murdering, inconsistently characterized villain, who regularly disregarded collateral damage. I don’t bring that up because it was good characterization (it wasn’t!) or because I think anyone should use it (it’s bad!), but because it’s extremely important context for the way others reacted to him.
Jason was put in Arkham by the police. He was kept away from all other inmates (including the Joker). Bruce and Dick agreed this was the best solution, not because Jason was a principled anti-hero who sometimes selectively killed and they unjustly hated him, but because he was, again, at the time an all-over-the-place mass murderer who very clearly expressed his desire to continue mass murdering.
Clark isn’t Kon’s dad and that’s okay. I’m sorry. I know you guys are really attached to this one. But they are both perfectly happy being brothers.
the passage of time
And I can’t make this a snappy bullet point, but I also notice a tendency in fic to kind of retroactively put the characters into stasis, if that makes any sense. Like--there is often this generic status quo created (Dick as Nightwing in Bludhaven, Jason returned and on okay terms with the family, Tim and Cass adopted, etc), and then every major event in the past is treated like that was the status quo the whole time. In reality, Jason came back to the Gotham pretty late in post-Crisis, towards the end of Tim’s time as Robin. Tim wasn’t adopted until even after that. Damian was introduced even later.
A lot of stuff happened with neither Jason nor Damian around, and with Tim and Cass not yet adopted. And things regularly changed: Dick moved between cities multiple times, Tim moved schools and houses many times, Gotham was devastated and rebuilt, many superhero teams split and reformed, many heroes died and came back, romantic relationships split and got back together, Stephanie was in and out of the Spoiler costume, Tim and Cass lived in Bludhaven for awhile, Alfred quit and returned at least twice...
Don’t get me wrong, I understand why details of timelines in particular are hard to understand when you haven’t read a lot of comics! But I personally am just really attached to all that nuanced history and the differences in what each character was around for and how much each character knows.
If you like that idea, but you’re overwhelmed about learning it all, my initial tip would just be to think about how old your characters are, and realize they’ve only been that old for a year, which might help you conceptualize all these events as things that have happened over a stretch of time as characters grew up and changed--because they haven’t been in stasis forever.
Or check out my timeline :)

hello do you mind explaining all the amazons?
All of them????
Okay uh I'll break down the ones i at least know about anyone who's deeper into the WonderFam please jump in I don't really interact with them that much.
But we've got
Diana Prince: Wonder Woman
Our Golden Age Princess of the Amazons. During the Golden and Silver ages she came from Paradise Island. She was truly animated clay here and several hundred years old by the time of WWII. During the Golden Age Diana married Steve Trevor and they had a daughter named Hippolyta "Lyta" Trevor. (My break down of Lyta would be an essay in itself and she's not really an Amazon so). Diana was a member of the JSA here.
During the Silver Age Diana also married Steve but no kids. She rescued Donna Troy from a fire and sent her to Paradise Island to be raised by Hippolyta making Donna and Diana sisters. This is the first timeline to mention Ares is her grandfather technically as he made Hippolyta. Diana lost her powers at some point. She got really really good at martial arts and then two years later got her powers back. She supposedly died during Infinite Crisis but then you know didn't. During Convergence she killed a vampire Joker. That was fun. In this timeline Diana was a founding member of the JLA.
Okay and post crisis New Earth Diana is the first one to say Diana is from Themyscira. It was still called Paradise Island sometimes. She was molded from clay. Diana in this time was not a founding member of the JLA but came to America after it was founded. (I think Infinite Crisis retconned her to be a founding member but idk) Diana has become a member of the Trinity alongside Batman (Bruce Wayne) and Superman (Clark Kent).
The Prime Earth Diana is the one from Flashpoint and onwards. She’s now the daughter of Zeus. In New52 if I recall right she was made much much younger like in her 20s and explored mankind in the modern era. The Doomsday clock thing reestablished her WWII origins. She was also said again to have been born during probably the Hellenistic Period (they said classical antiquity and that’s you know just a few thousand years) She just helped out in Death Metals and is now doing something with Infinite Frontier unclear I don’t really know what Prime Earth Diana has been up to lately.
So on Earth-Two, Earth-One, and New Earth Diana was the granddaughter of Ares and as such her life span was greatly extended. On Prime Earth as the direct daughter of Zeus she is immortal.
Donna Troy: Troia/Wonder Girl
Donna is a tricky one. She was introduced real quick to fill the girl role on the Teen Titans cause the boys were getting a little too gay. So started Silver Age Earth 1. Okay so basically her origin kept changing but the one that’s ‘canon’ is she was created to be a playmate for Diana but was abducted and kept being cursed to live tragic lives in New Cronus. Right around the Titans era okay Donna was rescued by Diana and brought back to Earth. Donna was the one to suggest the Teen Titans name. Donna is a member of the Fab Five along with Robin/Nightwing (Dick Grayson), Aqualad/Tempest (Garth of Shayaris), Kid Flash/Flash (Wally West), and Speedy/Arsenal (Roy Harper)
Donna married Terry Long when she was 19 and they had Robert, got divorced, they died in a car crash.
After Crisis on Infinite Earth Donna sorta realized all those ‘lives’ she led were other version of her which she was all of now. And also Donna was believed to be the Goddess of the Moon. She had to stop a sun-eater or whatever but failed (Hal came in with a clutch it it’s cool)
Donna also had to fix some shit during Infinite Crisis and ended up on a Universe Hopping road trip with Kyle Rayner and Jason Todd to find Ray Palmer for Final Crisis or something. She was killed by a Superman Android during the Teen Titans/Young Justice Crossover. (Edit thanks to that anon for this I legit couldn’t remember how she died)
And Prime Earth Donna was made to destroy Diana. She you know didn’t.
Look I’ll be real I know next to nothing about what the New52 tried to do with Donna. I just go by her original origins of being Diana’s sister.
On Earth-One and New Earth Donna’s life span was greatly extended and on Prime Earth she is stated to be Immortal as on Prime Earth Amazonian’s on Themyscira were granted immortality.
Nubia:
She is like Diana’s twin made from darker clay on Earth-One which is the silver age Earth. Nubia was actually slightly older than Diana but she was stolen as a baby by Ares who was going by Mars. Mars/Ares is Nubia’s grandfather and he wanted her help in taking down the Amazons. Nubia was raised on Floating Island (or slaughter island as Mars/Ares called it). Nubia fought Diana and hesitated to kill her leading to a draw. Nubia returned to Floating Island and at some point Supergirl had to save her life from poison of some sort.
On New Earth she went by Nu’Bia and was just a random Amazon, her job was to guard the Doom’s Doorway which is an entrance to the River Styx. She was not Diana’s sister.
On Prime Earth Nubia is the daughter of Hippolyta and the half-sister of Diana not her twin. Nubia went undercover pretending to work with Darkseid before Themyscira could recover and rally to fight. Nubia is currently the Queen of the Amazons. She was given the crown by her mother, Hippolyta during the Dark Metals event.
As with Donna on Earth-One and New Earth Nubia had a greatly extended lifespan and on Prime Earth Amazons are immortal.
Cassie Sandsmark: Wonder Girl
She is a New Earth entry who was for the new Young Justice team. She is the daughter of Zeus and Dr. Helena Sandsmark. Here as Ares is Cassie’s half-brother and technically the father of the Amazon’s this means Cassie is Diana’s great-aunt.
Cassie as a girl was able to request a Boon of Zeus who she didn’t know was her father at the time I believe and demanded real superpowers. Her mother Helena was able to turn off Cassie’s superpowers at the start as well. Cassie was trained by Artemis for awhile. Cassie became Wonder Girl in honor of Donna Troy who handed over her old suit. Cassie joined Young Justice as a teenager and would later be on the Teen Titans. Cassie has become a part of the Core Four for Young Justice alongside Robin/Red Robin (Tim Drake), Superboy (Kon-El/Conner Kent), and Impulse (Bart Allen).
Cassie’s best friends outside of the core four are Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) and Cissie King-Jones (Arrowette). Cassie and Conner Kent used to date as well and she was in love with him before he died during Infinite Crisis.
On Prime Earth Cassie is the daughter of Lennox and the granddaughter of Zeus. In this version Diana is Cassie’s aunt not the other way around. Cassie is still a member of the Young Justice team here. I don’t exactly remember what was happening during the New52. She was still Cassie unlike Kon and Bart who’d been replaced. But during Rebirth she went with the other members of Young Justice to rescue Conner Kent from Gemworld. She is currently still a member of the Titans.
On New Earth as the daughter of Zeus, Cassie is an immortal who would not age further once she reached her prime age (like 27 or so). On Prime Earth as the granddaughter of Zeus and the daughter of Lennox Cassie’s life is extremely extended.
Artemis Grace:
Artemis of Bana-Mighdall comes from a separate group of Amazons not on Themyscira or Paradise Island. Bana-Mighdall is a tribe of Amazons in Egypt who left Greece millennia ago.
On New Earth Artemis left her home at 14 and wound up working for Ra’s Al Ghul before returning to her home. There was a competition to see who would be the next Wonder Woman as Hippolyta foresaw Wonder Woman die and wished to spare her daughter the fate. Hippolyta ensured Artemis won the competition. Artemis was shunned by most of the world including the Justice League who refused to see her as the true Wonder Woman. Artemis was also thought to be too violent. Artemis would later die in a battle with a demon fulfilling the prophecy of Wonder Woman dying.
Artemis got out of hell eventually and was given the job of training Cassie Sandsmark by Diana and would later train Supergirl in combat as well.
On Prime Earth Artemis was raised being told she would be Queen of the Amazons. She was desperate to prove herself and wanted to be the Shim’Tar of the Bana Amazons. Artemis’ best friend and lover Akila was chosen instead. Without Akila by her side Artemis felt her home had nothing left to offer and set out on her own. She helped stop an invasion of Qurac into Bana as well.
Artemis then joined the Outlaws and worked with Red Hood (Jason Todd) and Bizarro, a botched clone of Superman.
On New Earth Artemis had a greatly extended life span. On Prime Earth he Amazons were gifted immortality but those who left for Bana-Mighdall lost this gift so it is most likely that Artemis has the same extended lifespan from New Earth.
Grace Choi:
Grace on New Earth comes from the same group as Artemis in Bana-Mighdall. Grace’s mother is an Amazon but her father was a Korean American. Grace grew up in America in the foster care system. She ran away at 9 but was kidnapped and sold into a child prostitution ring. She managed to escape at age 12 after her powers kicked in. Grace began fightining both for pay and for fun and worked as a bouncer at a meta club in Metropolis.
Grace worked for the Outsiders for awhile at the request of Roy Harper an ex-fling and good friend of hers. She helped rescue Lian from the same child protsition ring she was in as a child and generally had lots of adventures with the Outsiders.
Later it was revealed she had Bana roots but Grace refused to join them as they were currently you know sieging down the US. Batman was briefly worried about her loyalties but Grace proved she had no loyalty or ties to the Bana Amazons.
Grace has returned to the Prime Earth in Infinite Frontier and in Festival of Heroes and it seems like nothing has changed with her so far.
Grace has increased longevity of her life. She is listed as half-amazon because only her mother is a Bana Amazon but all Amazons only have their mother who are Amazons so I don’t really see why she isn’t a full Amazon. Anyways increased life span.
Jason:
He is Diana’s twin on Prime Earth. He was sent away cause you know no men on Themyscira. Jason was raised by Glaucus who was a member of the Argonauts crew and worked under the original Jason of Greek Myth. Who Jason was named for.
Jason was raised on the Aegean Coast by Glaucus and became a Fisherman. Jason was trained in his youth by his half-brother Hercules.
Jason worked briefly with Diana but wasn’t sure how to be a hero. There was a period where Darksied’s daughter tricked him but Diana talked him down. And Jason saved Diana’s life during the Dark Metals event.
He is currently in the Dark Mutliverse living with a boyfriend on the Aegean Coast.
As the son of Zeus, Jason is an immortal.
⚔️ Also for fun the Weapons:⚔️
Lasso of Truth: Wielded by Diana Prince
Originally imbued with it’s power by Aphrodite and Athena later after crisis forged by Hephaestus and powered by Hestia, this lasso forces the truth from whoever it has ensnared. It is indestructible.
Lasso of Persuasion: Wielded by Donna Troy
This Lasso forces someone to do what the wielder demands. This requires Donna’s or whoever wields the lasso to have a stronger will then who they’re using the lasso on. It is indestructible.
Lasso of Lightning: Wielded by Cassie Sandsmark
This lasso was created by Ares and gifted to his half-sister Cassie Sandsmark on New Earth. This lasso channels Zeus’ lightning and can make someone experience intense rage if they are caught by the lasso. The power of the lasso is directly correlated to Cassie’s rage levels.
Lasso of Submission: Wielded by Artemis Grace
Originally from Earth-3 this lasso has the ability to make someone obey any commands even those to inspire false love. After Superwoman (Lois Lane) of Earth-3 was killed Diana took the lasso and gifted it to Artemis.
Bow of Ra: Wielded by Artemis Grace
The Bow of Ra was a gift from the Egyptian sun god, Ra to the Bana-Midghall Amazons. This bow goes to the Shim’Tar and forges a special bond with them. Those who are not the Shim’Tar cannot wield the bow and further if you are not a candidate to be a Shim’Tar the bow will harm or even kill you. The bow requires intense willpower to use or it can drive the wielder mad. Akila was driven mad with the power of the bow and had to be killed by Diana and Artemis. It is said to have the power to destroy stars so this bow is incredibly dangerous and powerful if not wielded by the right person.
(Bonus Donna used to use a lasso that was golden but held no specific magical properties.)

The DC Identity-Swap AU: A World/Storybuilding Fanfic Project (that needs a better name)
What follows is what has been come up with for a DC Universe where many heroes and villains ended up with different identities, initially conceived of by comradepitrovsky and expanded on by me and others.
In some cases, the said heroes ended up with different supporting cast members, in others not.
Let us begin, with the founding members of the Justice League: -Superwoman: Diana Kent, the Last Daughter of Paradise. For…reasons, Themyiskara had to go to another dimension, but baby Diana couldn’t come, so at Hippolyta’s request, the Olympians sent her to a Patriarch’s World couple who would raise her right, namely Jonathan and Martha. She’s dating Lois Lane and her archenemy is Lex Luthor, with whom, I want to be clear, there is ZERO Foe Yay, because she’s disgusted by him, and he’s intimidated by her. -Green Lantern: Kal-El of Krypton, who the Guardians appointed to lead the Corps through the transition to running itself. Came to Earth because he needed a break, stuck around because sweet RAO this planet needs help. He managed to keep Sinestro from going off the deep end, so he’s part of the Council Kal set-up to help him run the Corps, along with Kilowog, Mogo, Abin Sure and…not sure. -Zatara: Bruce Wayne. After his parent’s deaths, Bruce was adopted by their close friend John Zatara, who realized the kid was tied to the demon Barbatos, and they figgered out a way for him to use that power for good. -Captain Marvel: Barry Allen, while studying Forensic Science in college, took some classes, and became friends, with Archeology Student C. C. Batson (there is considerable overlap between the two fields, right?). When Batson and his wife were murdered during a dig in Egypt, Barry offered to help with the investigation, and ended up becoming SHAZAM’s champion. -The Flash: Hal Jordan, test pilot for Ferris Aircraft, was struck by lightning whilst flying their latest prototype, and ended up tied to the Speed Force. (Note, like Johnny and Jessie Quick, can fly) -Hawkman and Hawkgirl: Arthur Curry and Dinah Lance. The former encountered the wreck of a Thanagarian spaceship whilst exploring underwater and ended up with the soul of Prince Khufu. Dinah was hanging around her Uncle Carter's place and had something similar happen with the soul of Chay-Ara. -Martian Manhunter. J'onn is exactly the same. Other thoughts, somewhat random, in no particular order: -Ollie was zeta beam'd from The Island to Rann instead of Adam Strange. -Adam is instead Metamorpho. -Eel managed to drag himself to Slaughter Swamp before succumbing to his wounds and so ended up becoming Swamp Thing. -Owing to…complicated feelings WRT to her adopted brother, Zatanna ended up hanging around with her dad’s colleague Thaddeus Brown, and took up his mantle instead, becoming Madame Miracle, Magical Escape Artist! -T. O. Morrow built Red Torpedo first, she got possessed by a water elemental somehow, rebelled against his programming, and ended up traveling to Atlantis, overthrew the tyrant Orm, was acclaimed Queen, married Mera, and now fights crime on the surface as Aquawoman. (I’m gonna say she sometimes wears a human disguise that looks Aquawoman-11, because I fancy her and will use almost any excuse to get her into one of these things) -Ray Palmer and Ralph Dibny became Firestorm. -Instead of becoming Cheetah, Barbara-Ann seized the power of Teth-Adam and became Captain Marvel’s archenemy. -Pam became the Cheetah instead, and is an enemy of The Flash, with no small amount of Foe Yay. -In addition to that, Hal is also in a Love Triangle with Carol and Lady Blackhawk, who came to work for Ferris after arriving in the 21st Century due to time travel shenanigans. Arguably a Love Quadrangle, since he's competing with his alter ego. -Selina and Helena are both Star Sapphires and both of them are pursuing Kal-El, who is receptive to both. -Barry is still with Linda, Wally is Capt. Marvel, Jr. -The Batson Twins became Superboy and Supergirl, but I haven't come up with specifics. Help please? -Bruce adopted Raven and Garth. Suggestions for codenames? -In an effort to gain the power to defeat Superwoman, Lex made a deal with Ares, confident that he could handle the God of War. He is now possessed by Ares, but has no idea, assuming that the ideas Ares puts in his head are entirely his own, because he’s too arrogant to believe anyone else can control or manipulate him. It helps that Ares largely approves of Lex’s ideas and doesn’t need to do much. As a side-eeffect, Lex’s power armor has a distinctly Ares-y feel to it. -Klarion is in Bruce’s Rogue’s Gallery. Said Rogue's Gallery also includes the Sivana family. Which means that yes, Bruce is dating Beautia. -Bruce's archnemesis is the man who in the normal reality became Black Manta, who I've always headcanoned as choosing to torment Arthur purely by random chance, and obviously picked differently here. Since there's no need for a nautical theme, he uses a different codename; Black Bat. -The first thing Kal-El did after completing training was rescue Kandor. Brainiac swore vengeance, and upon escaping from the Sciencells, discovered how to harness the Yellow Light of Fear. In addition to using it himself, he also unleashed a number of Phantom Zone criminals, took over their minds, and equipped his enslaved army with Yellow Rings.
-The Olympians left Diana some magic thingummy that allowed her to be trained in Amazon combat techniques, etc. in her dreams or something, because she needs something to make up for the lack of super-senses, but if she has the Lasso, I'm not sure how Lex can be a problem for her?
-Dick was adopted by the Dibnys, got himself the Gingold Extract, and fights crime as Firestorm’s sidekick, Elastic Lad.
-Mister Mind is one of Diana’s Rogues.
-Dr. Psycho is in Hal's Rogue's Gallery. Presumably, wossname the guy who framed him so he could steal his fiancee Mavra didn't do quite as good a job gaslighting her, she found out the truth, and he murdered her to cover it up. He is therefore unable to blame her for the plot in a feeble and cowardly attempt to save himself when Psycho comes after him. This leads to misogyny being a less prominent aspect of Psycho's particular psychosis, with his primary targets instead being "Alpha Male"-types like the man who ruined his life. And hey, here's Hal Jordan....
-Gen. Eiling as Reverse-Flash, Y/N? -Thawne become Sabbac, Y/N? -I think I'm gonna say Pam still has her canon powerset in addition to being the Cheetah. -Since one of the best things about Hal is how he hates being told what to do, but is most comfortable in jobs where he's in a disciplined hierarchy...Zinda recruits him to create a new version of the Blackhawks. Not sure who else is in it; I can think of a bunch of ace pilots in the DCu, but they’re all American, and the Blackhawks should be an international operation. Possibility; the same temporal shenaniganry that dropped Zinda in the modern-day also spat-out Hans Von Hammer, the Enemy Ace. -I'm adding Captain Nazi to Hal's Rogue's Gallery. Since Hal is Ambiguously Jewish, his sidekick is Inuit, and in this 'verse he's part of a team that's a legacy of an group founded to fight the Nazis, I feel like it works. Also, Hal's other villains thus far are a bisexual woman, a dwarf, and a US Air Force General, people who are naturally inclined to have beef with him and vice versa. -Abra-Kadabra being one of Bruce's villains, Y/N?
-Circe is one of Bruce’s Rogues and they have UST.

Note
tell me about the reverse robins au
anything specific? no? okay let’s just talk about the teams that i’ve created.
The Teen Titans: Damian Wayne (Nightlark ii), Jon Kent (Superboy i), Maya Ducard (Nobody ii), Kathy Branden(Beacon), and Colin Wilkes (Abuse).
Aka, the dream team for any Damian stans, methinks. Tbh i don’t know all that much about anyone besides damian and jon, because i’ve only read the supersons comics for them, but i’m going to be doing what i can to learn about the others and write them accurately. But yeah, this is the team for when they’re like, ages 13-18. once they get older they’re still allies and friends, but they’re no longer a coherent team, much less teenagers lol.
The Gotham Trio: Duke Thomas (Signal), Cullen Row (Catlad), Carrie Kelley (Wildfire).
This trio is godtier. i feel like they would get up to so much chaos... 🤌🤌 good shit. i need to read up on all three of them, but i’m really excited for where this will go. (PS one of Carrie’s possible identities before i settled on Wildfire was Wyldstyle... like the lego movie character... we decided that if that were the case then the lego movie exists in universe and she just decided to name herself after the character. we stan.)
The Outlaws: Tim Drake (Red Hood), Kon-El Kent (Supernova), Bart Allen (Impulse), Slobo.
Okay wow. so i’m sorry i didn’t include other members of yj98 in this, but i just didn’t see them being able to pull off the same morally grey type shit these guys are doing. like kon, i feel, would at the very least understand what tim was going through, and want to help his best friend through it, and would also be pissed at bruce for treating him like this. plus he has all these unresolved daddy issues towards superman... yikes. can someone say “teen angst”. and then bart is just straddling the line between good and bad to begin with— he grew up with no consequences, he literally grew up in a video game. so how he turned out is pure circumstance... there’s this one panel i can think of where he’s got his fist up to a guys chest and has an excited look as he asks “can i vibrate it through?” before tim says no. so yeah, if his friends are gonna be doing this shit where they’re taking down bad guys more directly, then he’s down for it. i don’t think i have to say anything about slobo. but also, since tim is gonna be coming nearly fresh outta the league of assassins, he’s gonna have allies in the form of Z, Owens, and Pru. so they’re gonna team up occasionally. have i mentioned the C H A O S this would cause? like, especially between Slobo and Pru. this is a team up that both needs to happen, and should be prevented from happening purely for the sake of the world.
Young Justice: Jason Todd (Bluejay), Cass Wayne (Batgirl), Koriand’r (Starfire), Roy Harper (Red Arrow), Cassie Sandsmark (Wonder Girl i), Garth (Aqualad i).
So the only character of these I’m not all-too familiar with is Garth, but I’m gonna be doing some researching/comics-reading. As for the rest of them... I know some of these were unusual choices. Cassie should be with Tim! Yes but Tim is a lot different in this au, and so is his team. I just don’t see her being able to pull that off— also i just wanted interactions between the two Cassandras. 🤷‍♂️ Also: Steph is a frequent ally to this team, as she and Cass share the mantle of Batgirl. she acts as a kind of team mom at times, which should be interesting to write lol.
Young Titans: Dick Grayson (Robin), Wally West (Kid Flash ii), Donna Troy (Wonder Girl ii), Kaldur’ahm/Jackson Hyde (Aqualad ii), Garfield Logan (Beast Boy).
Okay so I know that this is mostly a Titans line up, but i just love Kaldur from the show so much, and I couldn’t have two Aqualads on one team. So. That’s why Garth is with Jason. I might change it later, but this is what’s happening for now.

Red Robin #12 (July 2010) – Tim spent “a few months” looking for evidence before returning to Gotham, becomes emancipated minor

Red Robin #25 (Sept 2011) – Tim “and you are only 17”
The Batman Files (Oct 2014) – Jason was 15 at death (seen on death certificate)
?? Rebirth Young Justice series – Cassie: “didn’t mean to end up back in high school feeling - - like I did back when I went to high school.” Later, she says she’s in Metropolis “Working. Going to school in the fall.” So she’s probably starting college.
?? Bart in some Rebirth comic: “Am I six? Am I nineteen? That’s a really freaky thing, right?”
?? At some point: Donna says shes a little older than Kyle

Making this its own post because replying to the ask got so weirdly formatted I can’t even. Oh tumblr. You work so well.
@themessofthecentury  asked:
jsksjf my tumblr notifs are bugging and i didnt see your post but!!! The patron Saint of Robins?? I am much intrigue!!
(This is from this ask game, just....gotten to late, lololol. And I still have more I’m getting to, no worries. Just had a rough couple days is all, laid me up a bit.)
Okay, so The Patron Saint of Robins is kinda like the situation at the end of Grayson, except also not at all. And actually this is one of my older WIPs, and according to Scrivener I started it in 2015 afhislfhalhfalf, so it really has nothing to do with that. Also, its Young Justice-verse, but for two specific reasons:
1) YJ-verse is my go-to for Good Dad Bruce Wayne, when I don’t want to actually tackle the issues I have with his and his kids’ dynamic in comic book canon. I don’t carry over things like the adoption issue or the Robin succession into YJ fics, as I don’t think there’s anything that suggests they’re ever a specific issue in YJ and I don’t feel a need to make them one. So pretty much anything and everything I write in YJ goes with the backstory that Dick’s already adopted by Season One, and he’s the one to grant each later Robin permission to use the mantle, with no conflict over that, and more of a pre-Crisis transition to Nightwing than the post-Crisis firing from Robin. And this fic inherently needs Good Dad Bruce Wayne to work, lol.
2) I needed Klarion the Witch-Boy. Who of course exists in comic book canon, but is muuuuuch different there, and I just needed him to be a little demonic evil shithead, who sets everything in motion to get payback on the heroes for thwarting the Light in Season One, and he targets Robin due to being the oft-cited ‘first of the baby brat heroes’ and the ‘heart of the cape community.’
You don’t really need to be familiar with YJ canon at all for this one, as it goes sharply AU from after Season One, and only faintly and vaguely references specific events from that season. And I use my own YJ-ized version of the Titans as much as the actual YJ Team.
So basically, the plot of this one is to take revenge on the heroes for spoiling his game in Season One, Klarion plays a new game, by putting a chaos curse on Robin. It essentially erases him from peoples’ memories, though he’s perfectly able to make new ones. If he re-introduces himself to someone ask Dick Grayson, for instance, they don’t suddenly remember who Dick Grayson is or was, but they don’t forget about him again from that point onward, its like they meet him for the first time as a stranger.
But the curse part of things is only Batman can break it and restore everyone’s memories of Dick and his actual history, and only by identifying him for who he really is. And Dick can’t be part of breaking his own curse or else it seals it and makes it permanent and unbreakable forever.
Which of course leaves Dick completely miserable at first, understandably, and Bruce (and everyone else Dick knows, to varying different degrees) feeling some kind of loss but with no idea what it is they think or feel that they’re missing. Dick makes some half-hearted attempts at starting a new life for himself in Gotham, and in the process befriends a street kid named Jason Todd, though Dick introduces himself to Jason with just the name Robin.
The way the curse operates is it restitches together peoples’ memories to cover up the gaps where memories of him would go. So for instance, even though Jason never knew Dick before the curse, he was familiar with Batman and Robin just as much as any Gothammite was.....but due to the curse, the name Robin, upon meeting Dick, had no special meaning to him or anyone else. As far as he knew, Batman had always operated on his own in Gotham, the first teen superhero was that Speedy kid in Star City, etc. So when Jason first meets Dick, he just thinks he’s some dude whose name happens to be Robin.
Eventually, because Dick’s been kinda torturing himself by spying on Bruce just to ‘keep an eye on him’ and still watch his back, and he’s recognized by now that Bruce is mourning his loss without even knowing that he’s missing something....so Dick, who has also kinda come to see Jason as a little brother figure due to watching out for him as well....decides to kill two birds with one stone, unfortunate pun not intended. (Jason doesn’t die in this one, lol). Basically, Dick puts in motion the chain of events that lead Jason to stealing Batman’s tires, because he doesn’t know EXACTLY what Bruce will do but he knows it’ll get his attention in a big way and Bruce will take it from there.
One thing leads to another, Jason ends up living with Bruce and when eventually he wants to be trained by Bruce so he can do what he does and protect kids like he used to be.....when asked to pick a name....Jason names himself after the guy who always looked out for him, and who led to him being found by Bruce in the first place. He doesn’t know that his friend ‘Robin’ steered him towards those tires deliberately, just to bring him and Bruce into contact, but he does credit him with making the suggestion that ‘inadvertently’ (as far as he knows) enabled his and Bruce’s introduction, and so he names himself in honor of the boy who helped him and who he tried to track down again to similarly help, after Bruce adopted him, but was never able to find again.
Over the years, Dick also ends up steering Tim, Cass, Duke and Damian to Bruce in different ways than comic book canon (Steph and Babs’ debuts remain their own, as family adjacent but not family specifically) and thus is integral to the forming of the Batfam and has a connection with them even before the curse ultimately ends up broken and he’s able to reclaim his full identity. And each of them end up Robin at least briefly, like Steph is never Robin in this AU, and sticks with Spoiler, whereas Cass IS briefly Robin before becoming Batgirl after Babs. I did this for a few different reasons...
One, I really like that Cass is never Robin in main continuity as it creates a different dynamic between her and Dick than most of their siblings have, BUT I’ve always been curious to play around what Cass-as-Robin might even be like, just for an AU. Two, part of the Black Bat and Batgirl but never Robin sequence of mantles for Cass in the comic book continuity is like.....although it doesn’t get explored nearly enough, Babs was as much a kind of mother figure for Cass as Bruce was a father figure, despite Babs’ young age. So it makes more sense for Cass to stick more to just Bat-mantles than to ever be a Robin in the comic books. But in YJ, Babs is even younger, and just way too young to have the specific kind of dynamic that leads to that in the comic books, so its not as unreasonable IMO for her to have a different dynamic in her early days in the family here, before becoming closer with Babs and taking up the Batgirl mantle after she moves on to become Oracle.
And then also, and this is also the primary reason for making Duke a Robin briefly, before Damian is old enough....I got hung up on the title and it just didn’t work as well if it was Robins + Cass and Duke, lololol. See, in addition to helping steer the family into the points of introduction that make them a family, over the years he also acts as like, a guardian angel figure to the various family members, looking out for them and interceding in times of extreme danger, like when Jason is almost killed by the Joker. He’s always in disguise, but the kids eventually compare notes and realize there’s a singular figure behind each of their introductions to Bruce and the guy swooping out of nowhere to save their behinds whenever they’re most in danger, and Jason eventually connects this back to the guy who apparently NOT so coincidentally suggested he go after the Batmobile’s tires that fateful night, and the kids end up jokingly/not-so-jokingly referring to this figure as the Patron Saint of Robins. (Shout-out to the occasional mentions/allusions of Jason’s Catholicism).
They never tell Bruce about this figure (at least before Bruce starts to put together clues on his own), because they all figured out that for whatever reason, this person despite wanting them all to meet Bruce seems to want to avoid Bruce himself, and they kinda want to respect that as a kind of payback for his help, and also like....Bruce, even a kinder, gentler Bruce, is still Bruce. And when Bruce is gonna Bruce, that means Batparanoia. And all of them for various reasons DO trust that this guy has nothing but good intentions towards them, and so they don’t want to like....ruin or tarnish the positivity they associate with his intercession in their lives with paranoia or treating him like a bad guy. Which ultimately is really just smoke and mirrors for saying that he’s kinda a ‘just for them’ secret. Its a Robin thing.
(Until its not).
Because meanwhile, Dick, in between meeting the various Batfam members and pulling strings and looking out for them from the shadows, at first travels the world looking for ways to break his curse. But when ultimately its clear that the only way to break it is the loophole built into it already, Bruce identifying him for who he really is, but without Dick doing anything to steer him towards the answer, Dick settles into a new hero identity as Nightwing, and forms the Teen Titans, a public group of young superheroes (minus Roy and Wally, unfortunately, but still with Donna, Garth, Raven, Kory, ignoring season 3 Vic and also Terra because AU redemption arc what what, etc). And the Teen Titans avoid both the Young Justice Team and the Justlce League with EXTREME measures, much to the other heroes’ confusion and aggravation, because in the early days of the Titans, in a moment of what he’d term weakness, on one of his ‘bad days,’ Dick tells them enough of his story that they’re able to put together a good sense of what happened and who he really is by reading between the lines and what he leaves unsaid....
BUT as a result, all end up extremely committed to not mixing and mingling casually with the rest of the cape community because they don’t want to risk dropping any hints about the guy under Nightwing’s mask, in case that might count as steering Batman towards clues and seal the curse for good. So I have a lot of fun with having the Titans just nope out of the scene the second the bad guys are defeated even when they have to team up with other heroes, leaving the other heroes confused as hell and trying not to be all ‘WHY DON’T YOU LIKE US??”
Anyway, so yeah, that’s the gist of this one, lol. With it of course following the eventual plot that like...the Batfam starts to Detect and put things together.
ANYWHO!

Damian versus Klarion: Round One
“Aww, its adorable that you think you’re in my league,” the Witch-Boy cooed in an absolute mockery of sympathy. Damian bristled, but before he could do anything more than that, he was faced with a much more pressing matter as reality completely lost its mind.
The walls of the cavern fell away in an instant, only to be replaced with a whirling dervish of winds all around them, as if they now stood in the center of a cyclone that bled red and silver and black. It shrieked and wailed in a chorus of voices just on the other side of being comprehensible, a symphony of the damned that set every nerve in Damian’s body aflame with a primal instinct to get out, to find silence, to be anywhere but here.
He’d barely staggered a step backwards when the ground erupted beneath him, splitting apart into jagged obsidian shards that bobbed precariously in the sea of magma barely glimpsed through cracks now spiderwebbing their way across the floor. Spears of lightning burst upwards through them, stabbing impossibly at the heavens rather than raining down from them. They hissed and crackled as they flickered like forked serpent tongues of electric violet and black. The forks becoming branches, the pillars of sky-shattering light transforming into the trunks of great trees that grew upwards and outward, weaving a canopy overhead. One that wept violently red leaves that fell gently to the ground, only to hiss and bubble like acid once they did.
“See, normally this is when I’d hit someone with a little razzle-dazzle like this,” Klarion called out over the song of madness he’d created, as it crooned and careened wildly all around them. He snapped his fingers, and in the span of a second it all ceased. Reality reaffirmed itself, and all was right with the world once more…except now the two of them stood at the end of a hallway in Wayne Manor.
Damian stumbled, the sudden reappearance of firm ground paradoxically being the thing to challenge his balance. The demon boy standing beside him crooked his thumb and forefinger in the semblance of a gun, the smile pasted across his face one of wickedly gleeful malice.
“But you, kiddo, you’re special. Cuz there’s nothing I could do to you now that could top what I’ve already done, so why try when I can just savor the moment instead?”
“What are you babbling about?” Damian demanded roughly. In the wake of what the Witch-Boy had just conjured up with nothing more than a gesture, he was keenly aware of how flimsy a shield his bravado made. He just had absolutely no idea what else to fall back on.
Klarion only threw back his head and laughed though, skipping merrily down the hall as he did.
“I know something you don’t know,” he sing-songed and Damian lost what little grasp of his patience he’d managed to hang onto.
“You overestimate my need for an answer. Attempt to intimidate me all you wish, but I have no desire to indulge your little game any further.”
Klarion jerked to a stop and spun around, his face screwed into a childish pout. He stomped his foot, petulance personified. “I’m not intimidating you anymore, I’m gloating! Ugh, you’re so stupid! They’re completely different, how can you not tell?”
Every light in the hallway flickered and fizzed abruptly. The walls wavered, bubbled, momentarily molten as if made of wax.
Again Damian was reminded just how mercurial this being he was faced with was, and how dangerous. Perhaps, as Father would say, this was not the time to indulge his own instinctive inclinations. Or as Todd would put it, just because you’re already fucked, that’s no reason to fuck yourself over more than you have to.
Crude as his older brother was, there was occasional merit to his…pithiness. Not that he would be admitting that any time soon, of course.
“Fine. What is it you wish to gloat about then?” Damian grated out. The appeasement, such as it was, tried its best to stick in his throat before finally clawing its way free. But at least it proved worth the effort when the godling’s mood reverted back to impishness as readily as with the flip of a switch.
“Well. Its like this, you see.” Klarion said. He dragged it out as he folded both legs underneath him to sit cross-legged in the air, plopping his head into his hands. “I did a baaaaaaaaaaaaad, bad thing to your family, a loooooong time ago. And none of you have done anything about it, because you don’t even know! Isn’t that funny? Doesn’t matter how big a hero Daddy Bats is if he doesn’t even know what needs saving huh? Little Catch-22 there, you might say.”
“Yes. Quite hysterical,” Damian said dryly. “So what is it you claim to have done then?”
The Witch-Boy just sat there, regarding him with amusement, and the seconds marched on into minutes. Damian’s skin crawled. Prickling with impatience and possibly something…more. He wasn’t quite ready to name it anxiety or something as melodramatic as all that yet. In fact, he’d rather not put a name to it at all, but today did not appear to be a day for configuring things to his liking.
Klarion’s wicked grin grew as if sensing his thoughts, though to the best of his knowledge (and Damian did quickly ransack the library of his memory just to be sure) there was no indication telepathy was included among the Chaos Lord’s many, many powers. And still that detestable smile stretched slowly wider all the same, in perfect synchronization with the rising tide of Damian’s unease. Perhaps the Witch-Boy’s file was in need of annotation.
“How many doors would you say are in this hallway?”
“What? Seven.” Damian snapped out his answer, annoyed by the non sequitur. Not to mention baffled. Was it too much to expect even a semblance of linear thought from the Chaos brat?
“Are you suuuuuuure?” The Witch-Boy stretched his query out obnoxiously. “Maybe you should count again. Just for kicks and giggles.”
Damian throttled back each and every retort attempting to spring to his lips, stuffing them back down and cramming a lid on everything he most dearly wished to say to this most vexing of…shitheads. Once again, it appeared as though nothing less than Todd’s preferred form of nomenclature would suffice. Wonderful. On top of everything else Damian had to deal with today, he seemed to be finding common ground with the man all over the place. Was there no end to the indignities he must suffer?
But marshaling his own formidable willpower, Damian took a deep breath and indulged the Chaos Lord, glancing his eyes down the length of the hallway and counting out each doorway one by one. There was his own room of course, with Cassandra’s to the right of his, and the room Brown used when staying over to the right of hers. That was three. Then there was Thomas directly across from his own room, with Drake to his right and Todd just beyond that, with Father’s room at the very end of the hall, his master suite staggered and with no direct opposite like the others. Seven.
Except all of a sudden there was a door directly opposite his father’s. For a total of eight.
Damian’s brow furrowed in consternation. The faint whispers of uncertainty already seeded throughout him bore fruit, ripening into poisonous stabbings of doubt.
“That’s not real,” he stated with as much conviction as he could muster.
The Witch-Boy’s smile only grew wider still. “Isn’t it, though?”
“There’s never been a door there before,” Damian persisted, striding confidently down the hall towards it. The Chaos Lord flitted ahead of him, inverting til he was upside down and skipping merrily once more, though this time from the ceiling.
“Or has it been there all along?” He sing-songed some more.
“I would think we might have noticed if it had been,” Damian growled.
“Yes, you’d think, wouldn’t you? You are all supposed to be a family of detectives, I thought. Makes you wonder…if you could miss this, what else might you have failed to notice?”
Damian snarled to himself and did his best to shut out the demon boy’s prattling. He quickened his strides, eating up the length of the hallway in his haste to reach its end. He wasn’t sure what opening the door would prove, let alone what bewilderment the godling had conjured on its other side, but it appeared the only end to this game of his was through it, so let there be an end to it already.
And yet, for all his certainty - or best facsimile of it - he couldn’t help but pause once he reached the door in question. His hand hovered within reach of its brass knob, but some instinct, some…caution, held him at bay. As much as he wanted to dismiss all this as just one more of the Chaos Lord’s inane charades, there was a tension in the air that felt too weighty to be the product of just magical conjuring. Something more was in play here. Real forces were at work. His father might disdain magic, but Damian had been around enough of it himself to know when true power had been raised. And the span of empty space between his hand and this hither-to-unseen doorknob held more of it than Damian had felt throughout all the mad warpings Klarion had made of reality thus far.
“Are you sure you want to do that?” Klarion asked from somewhere overhead. His voice, usually pitched to carry, was so soft for a moment Damian mistook it for his own inner doubts. “Some doors are easier to open than to close again, you know.”
Even knowing the goading for what it was couldn’t stop Damian then, and with a simple breath to fortify himself, he reached for the knob, spun it once, and shoved the door open all in a single sharp movement.
The Witch-Boy giggled up above.
The door swung wide, a forceful arc that should have revealed anything and everything within it all at once; the better to react quickly to whatever that might be. Fine in principle, perfect in execution, but thwarted by one small detail:
There was nothing on the other side.
And not in the sense of it being just an empty room, but true nothingness. A pitch-black abyss darker than the deepest night, yawning forth from the doorway in a vast, impenetrable shroud. Nor was anything hidden in the darkness, Damian knew, even if just intuitively. He could feel it, that he stood on the edge of an impossible cliff, that there was nothing beyond this threshold but an aching chasm of emptiness and loss. The surety of it hung in the air, thick and heavy, a miasma that seeped through to his side of the doorway and clung to him like the moisture of a fog beads upon the skin.
Klarion’s head suddenly popped up alongside him, hovering just over his shoulder.
Albeit still upside down.
“Well that doesn’t seem right,” he mused, tapping at his lips with a forefinger. “What do you suppose is meant to be in there?”
The last of Damian’s brittle patience shattered.
“Enough! What is the meaning of all this, demon? Speak plainly, for once in your miserable existence!”
His self-preservation instincts and the reminder of just who it was he was shouting at kicked in too little too late, but he wouldn’t take his exasperated fury back even if he could. He was who he was after all. But fortunately, that described the Witch-Boy just as accurately, and rather take offense or perceive any actual threat from Damian’s rage, the Chaos Lord just shrieked with laughter and sprung backwards. He flipped right side up, still hovering in mid-air, and clapped his hands with glee.
“Oh, I should have done this ages ago,” Klarion sang out. “Why, you’re almost as fun as he used to be. Back before he got all droll and serious, that is. He’s no fun at all anymore, nothing like this. Never wants to play, always just running back to his tower with that little bitch of a demoness.”
His face soured like he’d just sucked on a lemon. But rather than stop there, his countenance kept morphing into an increasingly savage scowl, the longer he ranted. The hallway was suddenly sweltering, baking with unseen heat that twisted the air into shimmering ribbons. The small horns sprouting from his forehead burst into scimitars of flame that cut through those ribbons and set them similarly ablaze.
“Always putting on airs like she’s some kind of royalty, just because her Daddy Dearest put the fear into a few peasants back in the day,” the Witch-Boy snarled viciously. “As if that’s enough to put her on par with the likes of me. No one is the likes of me. NO ONE!”
Reality itself quaked with the force of his shout. White-blue flames spat forth and crescendoed down the length of the corridor, splashing against its walls and searing them to a crisp. Damian braced himself for all the good it would do, keenly aware of the void still gaping hungrily behind his back, but before the fire could become an actual danger to him as well, all was quiet once more.
Silence hung in the air much like the demon boy, poised yet motionless. Suspended. Waiting.
And then Klarion simply inhaled and brushed his hands down the front of his garments, smoothing out the wrinkles as he reclaimed his calm. The corridor restored itself to its former self, curtains of vintage reality unrolling from the ceiling to the floor as though papering over the damage. Damian felt rather than saw when the portal behind him swung shut and was replaced with the expanse of ivory paint and ornate sconces he was used to seeing in its place.
“I am one of a kind, after all,” Klarion finally remarked. It was a casual drawl offered forth almost off-handedly, as if more a reminder to himself than uttered for anyone else’s sake. He used one hand to spell out letters in the air. They appeared and vanished again in bursts of fireworks and fluorescent flame. “U-N-I-Q-U-E.”
“As I, apparently, am not,” Damian said, seizing upon the Chaos Lord’s restored calm and good cheer. “Who is this ‘he’ you mentioned? If I’m to be pitted against him as entertainment in your eyes, might I at least know his name?”
“Nuh-uh-uh,” the Witch-Boy scolded. He wagged his finger at Damian. “No spoilers. That’s not how the game is played.”
Keenly aware of the boy’s power once more, Damian gritted his teeth and pressed on. “Well, if there are to be rules, shouldn’t I at least know what those are?”
Klarion sucked in a deep breath, drawing himself up along with his inhalation as though preparing for some great speech…and instead just toppling backward, flopping onto an extravagant fainting couch that suddenly appeared beneath him, though similarly floating in the air.
“I can’t recall at the moment.” His now-faint voice drifted up from where he lay buried amid a mountain of pillows. “I’ve had a terribly exhausting day. But you’re supposed to be a detective, remember? Go…I don’t know. Detect things.”
He flapped an arm at Damian dismissively, and then crooked a finger into a twirling motion that set his divan to spinning in lazy circles.
“Isn’t life grand?” Klarion sighed fondly. “With all its twists and turns, its eddies and swirls. I mean, take the two of us. Scant hours ago, we were mortal enemies, and just look at us now.”
The Witch-Boy lazily rolled his head to the side as the couch drifted to bring him face-to-face with Damian. His lips spread wide in that malevolent, wicked grin of his once again, but somehow it managed to be even wider than any he’d shown off before. His eyes blazed with a hellish inner light, and his voice, when next he spoke, dropped deep into a demonic register. A bass that boomed forth and set Damian’s very bones to rattling.
“Ain’t we got fun?”

Rick and Morty: A Guide to Every Voice Actor
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The world of Rick and Morty has grown to absurd proportions. The show spans multiple planets, galaxies, timelines, and multiverses, meaning there’s always an opportunity to meet strange new people and creatures.
As such, Rick and Morty’s voice cast has grown along with the adventures of its titular pair. While co-creator Justin Roiland, Chris Parnell, Spencer Grammer, and Sarah Chalke have reliably voiced the central Smith-Sanchez family this entire time, the show also relies on a large crop of other voice actors. Some actors recur while others pop up only a time or two as very special guests. But all contribute to the rich aural tapestry of Adult Swim’s very ambitious animated series.
Gathered here is a list of (to the best of our knowledge) every voice actor who has popped up on Rick and Morty, who they played, and where you may have heard (or seen) them before.
Justin Roiland
Rick, Morty, Mr. Meseeks, Mr. Poopybutthole, Mr. Always Wants to Be Hunted
Justin Roiland is not just the co-creator of Rick and Morty but also the vocal engine for how much of the show sounds. Roiland portrays Rick, Morty, Mr. Meseeks, Mr. Poopybutthole, and countless other distinctively voiced characters in the show’s weird world. From the pilot on, Roiland’s tic-filled voice patterns have driven a lot of the humor behind the show.
Roiland has been an animator and a voice actor for quite a long time, getting involved with his eventual Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon and his Channel 101 imprint back in 2004. There he made Internet-only cult animated series like House of Cosbys, and 2 Girls One Cup: the Show. His voice was previously well known as Earl of Lemongrab (“Unacceptable!!!”) in Adventure Time.
Chris Parnell
Jerry Smith
Former SNL cast member Chris Parnell has had a prolific career in comedy both as a live-action and voice actor. Parnell is best known for playing Garth Holliday in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Dr. Leo Spaceman in 30 Rock, and many more roles in film and television. In the animation world he’s voiced characters on Archer, Robot Chicken, Gravity Falls, and beyond. His voice is often perfect for the “everyman” role and as such he has only been required to embody the sad form of Jerry Smith on Rick and Morty thus far.
Spencer Grammer
Summer Smith
The daughter of Kelsey Grammar, Spencer Grammar got her start as Casey Carywright on the ABC Family college dramedy Greek. Since then, she has done chiefly live-action work on shows such as CSI, Chicago PD, and Grey’s Anatomy.
Sarah Chalke
Beth Smith
Canadian actress Sarah Chalke brings two enormous roles from TV comedy’s past to her work on Rick and Morty. At first she was best known as the “second Becky” on ABC sitcom Roseanne. She would then go on to portray Dr. Elliot Reid for nine seasons of the classic Scrubs. Chalke is still chiefly a live-action comedic actress today but has done some more voice work in the past, including on Clone High and American Dad.
Kari Wahlgren
Jessica, Cynthia, Samantha, Mother Gaia
Kari Wahlgren works extensively as a voice actress for animated movies, TV shows, and video games. As evidenced by her character list above, she is often Rick and Morty’s go-to voice to portray one of Summer’s teenage peers.
Brandon Johnson
Mr. Goldenfold
Brandon Johnson is a familiar face and voice to Adult Swim audiences. He has previously popped up on NTSF:SD:SUV and American Dad. On Rick and Morty he voices Mr. Goldenfold, who is seemingly the only teacher at Morty and Summer’s school.
Phil Hendrie
Principal Gene Vagina
Philip Hendrie is best known for hosting The Phil Hendrie Show, a proto-Comedy Bang Bang-esque talk radio show in the 1990s where he portrayed both a fictionalized version of himself and many other wacky characters. He broke into animated voice acting in the late ‘90s, voicing dozens of characters on King of the Hill and popping up in Futurama as well. On Rick and Morty he plays the unfortunately named principal of Morty’s school.
Ryan Ridley
Frank Palicky, Lighthouse Keeper, Concerto
Ryan Ridley is a writer and producer on Rick and Morty, and like many of the show’s writers is sometimes called upon to lend his voice to a character or two. His best known creation is the Lighthouse Keeper on the Purge planet obsessed with his terrible screenplay. Ridley has also written for Ghosted, Blue Mountain State, and Community.
Rob Paulsen
Snuffles, Centaur
Rob Paulsen is a legendary voice actor best known for voicing two Ninja Turtles (Raphael and Donatello) and several Animaniacs characters. His filmography is truly impressive and includes the important role of Snuffles the Smith family dog on Rick and Morty.
Jess Harnell
Scary Terry, Ruben
Harnell is another Animaniacs veteran. After voicing Scary Terry and some additional voices in season 1, Harnell has yet to return to Rick and Morty.
Patricia Lentz
Joyce Smith
Patricia Lentz provides the voice of Jerry’s mom. She’s had a long, impressive career of live-action and voice acting with some highlights including Runaways, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Happy Days.
Dana Carvey
Leonard Smith
The voice of Jerry’s dad is provided by one of SNL’s better known alums in Dana Carvey. A master impressionist, Carvey was an important figure on SNL during the ‘80s and would go on to star in Wayne’s World, The Master of Disguise, and Trapped in Paradise. Shortly after his SNL career, he hosted The Dana Carvey Show, which did not last long but is notable in TV history for having an incredible cast of writers including Louis C.K. Charlie Kaufman, Jon Glaser, Robert Carlock, and frequent Dan Harmon collaborator Dino Stamatopoulos.
Echo Kellum
Jacob Philip, Brad, Triple Trunks
“I throw balls far. You want good words? Date a languager.” So sad that we had to leave Brad behind in C-137. Echo Kellum provides the voice of Brad and several other Rick and Morty characters.. Kellum is a UCB grad who has appeared in Key & Peele, Comedy Bang! Bang! and most notably Arrow as Mister Terrific.
John Oliver
Dr. Xenon Bloom
John Oliver now carries on the legacy of The Daily Show in his superb HBO news series Last Week Tonight. Prior to finding his perfect comedy news niche, Oliver had a lengthy comic acting career starting in his native England and extending into his new home in the U.S. Oliver previously played an important recurring role in Harmon’s Community and pops up just once on Rick and Morty.
David Cross
Prince Nebulon
David Cross is one of several sketch comedy legends who lent their voice to Rick and Morty as part of their lengthy careers. Cross created and starred in sketch series Mr. Show with Bob and David alongside co-creator Bob Odenkirk (how has he not popped up on Rick and Morty yet?). Since then he’s had a successful stand up career and been a part of some impressive TV ensembles such as Arrested Development.
Dan Harmon
Birdperson, Kevin, Mr. Marklovitz, Davin, Ice-T, Dr. Glip-Glop, Nimbus
Dan Harmon is the co-creator of Rick and Morty alongside Roiland. The two share a long history going back to the Channel 101 days. While both Roiland and Harmon are skilled storytellers, Harmon has truly delved into the science of story throughout his career. Harmon is best known for creating and showrunning Community, which became an onscreen sensation for fans and an offscreen nuisance for NBC due to Harmon’s at times difficult behavior. On Rick and Morty, Roiland and Harmon deploy Harmon’s deadpan delivery to good use, with him often playing monotone characters like the beloved Birdperson.
Tom Kenny
King Jellybean, Squanchy, Conroy, Million Ants, Etc.
Tom Kenny is an incredibly successful voice artist who you likely best know as none other than SpongeBob SquarePants. On Rick and Morty, Kenny’s roles are decidedly less wholesome than the sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea. Kenny was a big factor in season 1 playing King Jellybean and Sqaunchy. He’s popped up sparingly in seasons 2, 3, and 4 as well, most notably as Million Ants of the Vindicators.
Cassie Steele
Tammy Gueterman, Tricia Lange
Somebody’s gotta play Tammy Gueterman, that traitorous monster. And that “honor” goes to Cassie Steele. Steele’s name is recognizable to Canadian (and some American) audiences due to her role as Manny Santos on Degrassi: The Next Generation. Rick and Morty was her first voice acting role. She will continue her voice acting career as the lead in Disney’s upcoming Raya and the Last Dragon.
Claudia Black
Mar-Sha/Ventriloquiver
Claudia Black has turned up on Rick and Morty twice, once in season 1 and once in season 4. It’s a surprise she hasn’t done so more often as she’s built up quite the voice acting career. After becoming well known in sci-fi series like Farscape and Stargate SG-1, Black continued on into a successful gaming career, providing her voice to Uncharted, Gears of War, and Dragon Age.
Maurice LaMarche
Morty Jr. Brad Anderson, Abradolf Lincler, Crocubot
Maurice LaMarche’s smooth baritone is quite familiar to many animation fans. LaMarche has voice acted in everything from Animaniacs to Futurama. He’s got a killer Orson Welles impression and that seems to be the starting point for many of his Rick and Morty characters.
Alfred Molina
Mr. Needful
Many of us know Alfred Molina from his incredibly successful film career in projects like Boogie Nights, Spider-Man 2, and The Da Vinci Code. But Molina has also had quite the career as a voice actor as well. In the past couple decades, Molina has lent his sturdy voice to Rango, Monsters University, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Frozen II, and more. He was clearly a shrewd choice for the Lucifer-like Mr. Needful. It’s a wonder why he hasn’t turned up on Rick and Morty more.
Richard Fulcher
King Flippy Nips
Richard Fulcher is best known as the unofficial third member of British comedy troupe The Mighty Boosh, though he himself is American. Fulcher wrote and acted in every incarnation of The Mighty Boosh. He has also had a prolific career in comedy acting outside the troupe. As of late, Fulcher has leaned into his voice acting abilities including this sadly one-off role on Rick and Morty as King Flippy Nips, ruler of Pluto.
Nolan North
Scroopy Noopers, Multiple Others
Nolan North has done extensive videogame work in franchises such as Uncharted, Assassin’s Creed, and the Arkham series. That’s right: the voice of shrimpy Plutonian Scroopy Noopers on Rick and Morty is both Nathan Drake and Desmond Miles. North also voices many other characters in positions of authority for the show.
Aislinn Paul
Nancy
Aislinn Paul is another Degrassi: The Next Generation alum who has broken into the voice acting world. On Rick and Morty, Paul plays only Nancy, Summer’s nerdy classmate who everyone is always mean to. Hopefully one day there will be justice for Nancy.
Alejandra Gollas
Lucy
Alejandra Gollas is a bilingual Mexican actress who has acted in films, TV shows, and stage productions for decades. Her only Rick and Morty role was that of creepy Titanic enthusiast Lucy.
Scott Chernoff
Revolio Clockberg Jr.
Originally referred to as “Gearhead,” Revolio Clockberg Jr. is one of Rick and Morty’s most recognizable recurring characters. Embodying this important role is veteran voice actor and TV writer Scott Chernoff. Chernoff has lent his voice to dozens of animated properties and has even written for many successful comedies including BoJack Horseman, The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, and School of Rock. He is one of many Channel 101 veterans involved in Rick and Morty and pitches in with some other background voices on the show here and there.
Keegan-Michael Key
Schleemypants
Keegan-Michael Key is likely best known as half of the ultra successful sketch comedy duo Key & Peele. (Wonder whatever happened to the other guy!) Key has had an enormously successful career as a comedic actor on television. On Rick and Morty he plays testicle-looking time cop Schleemypants.
Jordan Peele
Second Fourth-Dimensional Being
Oh, here’s Peele! Schleemypants’ unnamed partner is the only character Peele has played on Rick and Morty.
Jemaine Clement
Fart
New Zealand comedic actor Jemaine Clement is best known for being half of the Grammy award-winning comedic musical act Flight of the Conchords alongside Bret McKenzie. Clement has also worked extensively with fellow Kiwi Taika Waititi to produce recent classics like What We Do in the Shadows. His deadpan delivery was a perfect choice monotone gaseous being “Fart.”
Andy Daly
Krombopulos Michael
Krombopulos Michael is Rick and Morty’s Boba Fett: he looks cool but ultimately does nothing. Playing K.M. was one of the most sought-of “character voice actors” in the industry. Daly’s cheerful everyman delivery has proven useful on dozens of comedy shows across the entertainment landscape. Perhaps best known for his starring vehicle Review with Forest MacNeil, Daly has also lent his voice to series such as Harley Quinn, Bob’s Burgers, and Big Mouth. He can also be heard as a crucial role on Roiland’s Solar Opposites.
Christina Hendricks
Unity
Christina Hendricks is best known for her role as Joan Holloway on Mad Men. In addition to that, however, she’s appeared in quite a few genre films and shows like Firefly, Life, and The Neon Demon. Hendricks has done some voice work here and there and her only role on Rick and Morty to date is assimilation expert and one-time Rick Sanchez paramour Unity.
Patton Oswalt
Beta-Seven
Patton Oswalt is basically the dark matter of the comedy universe. He and his voice turn up just about everywhere. Perhaps his best known voice acting role is that of lead character Remy in Ratatouille. On Rick and Morty he has played only Beta-Seven thus far and is surely due for some more appearances.
Keith David
The President
Even if you’ve never heard of Keith David, you have surely heard his voice. An unmistakable baritone with gravitas, David has leant that voice to projects such as Gargoyles, Halo, and Spawn. David has worked with Harmon before on the final season of Community. Surely, there is no better voice for Rick and Morty’s unnamed President…or its Reverse Giraffe.
Kurtwood Smith
General Nathan
Not sure if you recognize Kurtwood Smith’s voice? You would if he called you a dumbass. Yes, Smith is best known to TV audiences as Eric Forman’s ornery dad Red on That ‘70s Show. He provides that same ornery spirit to the role of General Nathan on Rick and Morty in “Get Schwifty.”
Stephen Colbert
Zeep Xanflorp
Stephen Colbert is of course a longtime comedic actor, host of The Colbert Report, and now host of The Late Show on CBS. The Late Show understandably takes up most of his time nowadays but he was nice enough to portray the intelligent alien living inside Rick’s flying saucer’s Miniverse battery.
Nathan Fielder
Kyle
“The Ricks Must Be Crazy” has quite the star power among its voice cast. In addition to Colbert’s Zeep, the episode also introduces another Microverse populated by Kyle. Kyle is played by Nathan For You’s cringe comedy maestro Nathan Fielder.
Jim Rash
Glaxo Slimslom
Jim Rash is another frequent Dan Harmon collaborator, best known for his role as Dean Pelton on Community. Rash is an accomplished comedic actor and an Oscar award-winning screenwriter. He’s the perfect choice to play alien couples counselor Glaxo.
Matt Besser
Fungo
Matt Besser is an improv comedy specialist who is a founding member of the Upright Citizens Brigade comedy troupe. Over his long career, he’s appeared in just about everything. On Rick and Morty he portrays alien diplomat Fungo, who tries to convince Jerry to donate his penis to Shrimply Pibbles.
Werner Herzog
Shrimply Pibbles
Werner Herzog might be the strangest inclusion in the Rick and Morty voice canon. Herzog is a towering figure in the cinema world as a director, screenwriter, documentarian, and occasional actor. His German accent and generally serious and pessimistic disposition has made him a natural target for comedies looking to inject a bit of weird humor into the proceedings.
Chelsea Kane
Arthricia
Chelsea Kane has appeared in several TV series targeted to tween audiences like Disney Channel’s Jonas and Freeform’s Baby Daddy. Her brief role as the Purge planet’s Arthricia was a jumping off point to try more voice actor roles on shows like Hot Streets, Regular Show, and DC Super Hero Girls.
James Callis and Tricia Helfer
Pat and Donna Gueterman
James Callis and Tricia Helfer portray the parents of double-agent Tammy Gueterman for a very specific reason. Callis and Helfer are best known for their roles on Syfy’s classic series Battlestar Galactica, with Callis playing brilliant scientist (and traitor to humanity) Gaius Baltar and Helfer playing Cylon model Number 6. Pat and Donna Gueterman on Rick and Morty look just like the actors playing them, which should have been our first clue that something is amiss.
Nathan Fillion
Cornvelious Daniel
Who is Nathan Fillion if not nerd culture’s best friend? Fillion came into prominence by playing Captain Mal Reynolds on Joss Whedon’s beloved Firefly. Since then Fillion has had a solid career on shows like Castle and The Rookie. In his spare time, however, he provides his voice to animated series like Rick and Morty and Big Mouth, often playing a thinly-veiled version of himself. Cornvelious Daniel is notable for being the first character onscreen in Rick and Morty to enjoy that sweet, sweet McDonald’s Szechuan sauce.
Tony Hale
Eli
Tony Hale won two Emmys for playing the Vice President’s bagman Gary Walsh on Veep. Before that he was the youngest Bluth child, Buster, on Arrested Development. As of late, however, he’s getting more into the voice acting scene. You (or your kids) may best know him as the beloved Forky in Toy Story 4. But prior to that, he popped up as a cheery Mad Max-style biker named Eli on Rick and Morty.
Joel McHale
Hemorrhage
Joel McHale is, of course, another Community alum. He played lead character Jeff Winger on Harmon’s old NBC series. In addition to that, McHale has had a lengthy career in comedy, having hosted The Soup and Netflix’s recent Tiger King special. He was also a tight end of the University of Washington football team but that’s neither here nor there. He voices bucket-wearing post-apocalyptic warlord Hemorrhage on Rick and Morty.
Susan Sarandon
Dr. Wong
Perhaps no character on Rick and Morty has delved deeper into Rick’s psyche than Smith-family psychologist Dr. Wong. Lending her voice to Dr. Wong in the infamous “Pickle Rick” episode is legendary actress Susan Sarandon a.k.a the Louise in Thelma and Louise.
Peter Serafinowicz
Agency Director
Peter Serafinowicz is a British comedian and actor who used his role voicing Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace as a launching pad to befriend some truly talented creators and get some truly fascinating roles. Serafinowicz has popped up in Shaun of the Dead, Guardians of the Galaxy, Parks and Recreation, and more. He also portrayed the titular Tick in Amazon’s The Tick. His role in Rick and Morty is briefly that of a Russian villain agency director who tries to take down the ever-elusive Pickle Rick.
Danny Trejo
Jaguar
“Pickle Rick” really has quite the impressive guest voice cast. Danny Trejo joins Peter Serafinowicz and Susan Sarandon in lending his voice to this episode. Trejo plays Rick’s loose canon action hero ally, Jaguar. Outside of Rick and Morty, Danny Trejo may be one of the most recognizable faces in entertainment. A frequent collaborator of Robert Rodriguez, Trejo has leveraged his fascinating upbringing and tough guy appearance into countless roles.
Gillian Jacobs
Supernova
Another Community alum! Superhero team The Vindicators requires a lot of guest voice talent and clearly Dan Harmon knew one place to turn. Jacobs played Britta on Community (she’s the worst). The Pittsburgh-born actress has also appeared in Girls, Don’t Think Twice, and Ibiza.
Christian Slater
Vance Maximus
Christian Slater is a big get for Vindicators leader Vance Maximus. While he’s best known to modern audiences as the titular Mr. Robot in Mr. Robot, Slater got his start as an actor with popular roles in movies like Heathers, Interview with the Vampire, and Broken Arrow. Slater has had a fruitful voice acting career as well, having previously played “Slater” in Archer.
Lance Reddick
Alan Rails
Alan Rails is another one of the hallowed Vindicators crime-fighting team. Playing the ghost train-summoner is Lance Reddick. Reddick has been a mainstay on television for decades, turning up in Oz, Fringe, Lost, and more. Most notably he played Cedric Daniels for the entirety of The Wire’s run.
Logic
Logic
Logic is one of the few Rick and Morty guest stars who gets to be an animated version of himself.  This Maryland-based rapper has released five successful albums and enlisted Rick and Morty to help promote his sixth mixtape Bobby Tarantino II.
Clancy Brown
Risotto Groupon, Story Train passenger
Talk about a guy with a commanding voice. Clancy Brown has been a successful actor for a long time, going back to his roles in Highlander, The Shawshank Redemption, and Lost. He’s undoubtedly best known to animation fans, however, as the voice of stingy Krusty Krab owner Mr. Krabs in SpongeBob SquarePants. On Rick and Morty, he’s played alien restaurant manager Risotto Groupon and a Story Train passenger in season 4’s “Never Ricking Morty.”
Thomas Middleditch
Tommy Lipnip
Thomas Middleditch is likely best known to television audiences as overmatched tech tycoon Richard Hendrix on HBO’s Silicon Valley. That’s just the tip of the iceberg for Middleditch’s comedy career. The prolific improviser played Tommy Lipnip in Rick and Morty and must have impressed Justin Roiland enough to give him a lead role on his Hulu comedy Solar Opposites.
John DiMaggio
Multiple Minor Roles (Death Stalker, Leader, Knight, etc.)
John DiMaggio is an incredibly busy voice actor. If you’ve ever enjoyed an animated comedy, there’s a good chance DiMaggio contributed his voice to it. His best known roles include Bender on Futurama, Jake the Dog on Adventure Time, and Scotsman on Samurai Jack.
Sherri Shepherd
Judge
Sherri Shepherd is an actress, comedian, and TV personality best known for being a co-host on The View for seven years. Since then she’s turned up as an actress or talking head on many shows and lent her voice to portray a judge that deals with Morty in the season 4 premiere.
Sam Neill
Monogatron Leader
In addition to having one of the best Twitter accounts in the world, Sam Neill is also an actor best known for playing Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III. The New Zealander has continued to work quite a bit in recent years, turning up in Thor: Ragnarok and Peaky Blinders. On Rick and Morty he plays the leader of the  Monogatron alien race in “The Old Man and the Seat.”
Taika Waititi
Glootie
Playing another Monogatron, this one named Glootie, is New Zealand actor/director Taika Waititi. Waititi got his start in the New Zealand comedy scene alongside other Rick and Morty guest star Jermaine Clement. Since then he has only gone on to become one of the most in-demand filmmakers on the planet. Waititi is behind Thor: Ragnarok, JoJo Rabbit, and an upcoming Star Wars film.
Kathleen Turner
Monogatron Queen
Kathleen Turner is what you would call a “get” for Rick and Morty. Turner has won two Golden Globe awards and been nominated for an Oscar and several Tony awards. She is best known for her roles in ‘80s movies Romancing the Stone, Prizzi’s Honor, and The War of the Roses. Turner has also been working as a voice actress since the ‘80s, voicing Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit and going on to act in The Simpsons and King of the Hill as well.
Jeffrey Wright
Tony
Jeffrey Wright is no stranger to sci-fi, having toiled away as sad robot Bernard on Westworld for three seasons. Wright got three-quarters of a way to an EGOT in one role by playing Belize in Angels in America. Since then he’s acted in several Daniel Craig Bond films, Boardwalk Empire, and The Hunger Games. On Rick and Morty he plays the role of an alien who vexes Rick into an existential crisis by continuing to use his private toilet.
Elon Musk
Elon Tusk
Elon Musk is a South African/Canadian/American engineer and industrialist who serves as the founder and CEO of SpaceX and CEO of Tesla, along with numerous other ventures. Presumably he did not call anyone behind the scenes of Rick and Morty a pedophile but you never know.
Justin Theroux
Miles Knightley
Justin Theroux has had quite the career in Hollywood. He first came to prominence acting in the David Lynch films Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire. He then continued to appear in major films while also writing some for good measure like Tropic Thunder, Iron Man 2, and Rock of Ages. On television he played Kevin Garvey in HBO’s The Leftovers. For Rick and Morty, he played the role of “heist artist” Miles Knightly in “One Crew Over the Crewcoo’s Morty.” You son of a bitch, I’m in.
Pamela Adlon
Angie Flint
Pamela Adlon is the rare case of an actor who was first best-known for voice work breaking into the live-action arena in a big way. Adlon is best known for giving voice to Bobby Hill on King of the Hill, while also voice acting in other animated projects like Recess, and 101 Dalmatians: The Series. A longtime collaborator of Louis C.K. (though not so much anymore), Adlon appeared on FX’s Louie and got a well-received FX show of her own, Better Things. On Rick and Morty, Adlon portrays Angie Flint – a lock-picker who Rick recruits to his heist team.
Matthew Broderick
Talking Cat
Matthew Broderick is a longtime stage, film, and television actor best known for his roles on Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, WarGames, The Producers, and much more. Most recently he turned up on Netflix’s sadly-departed post-apocalyptic comedy Daybreak. On Rick and Morty, Broderick plays a Talking Cat with a secret so heinous it will drive anyone to near insanity.
Liam Cunningham
Balthromaw
To portray the voice of a wizened dragon, Rick and Morty turned to an actor best known for a series filled with them. The Irish actor Liam Cunningham is known to most people as Ser Davos Seaworth from Game of Thrones. Though not usually a voice actor he must have enjoyed his role on Rick and Morty as he turns up again briefly in Roiland’s Solar Opposites.
Phil LaMarr
Multiple Minor Roles
The first two things most people (and by most people I mean me) think of when they think of Phil Lamarr are his time on Mad TV and the moment his head explodes on Pulp Fiction. But aside from sketch comedy and head explosions, LaMarr has had a remarkable voice acting career. He portrayed the title character in Samurai Jack while also providing his voice to Justice League, Static Shock, and countless video games. It’s surprisingly hard to figure out what voices Phil LaMarr plays on Rick and Morty but given his talents it’s certain to be quite a few.
Christopher Meloni
Jesus
When Rick and Morty briefly presented the savior of mankind in season 4’s sixth episode, surely there was only one choice to play him. Christopher Meloni has had one of the more fascinating careers in entertainment. After playing the deadly serious role of Elliot Stabler on Law and Order: SVU for years, Meloni has re-embraced his comedic side in projects like Happy!, Harley Quinn, while reprising his role in the Wet Hot American Summer franchise.
Paul Giamatti
Story Lord
Paul Giamatti once joked in a late night talk show interview that his role in any given heist or action movie would be the guy wearing a headset in a van, typing on a computer, and telling the hero to “get out of there, man!” He has since parlayed that character actor sensibility into a remarkable, multi-award-winning career. Giamatti is best known recently for portraying Chuck Rhoades on Billions and producing AMC’s Lodge 49. Prior to that he played lead roles in American Splendor, HBO’s John Adams, and much more. The guy has a good handle on stories and therefore makes perfect sense as Rick and Morty’s Story Lord.
Alan Tudyk
Chris, Observant Glorzo, Multiple Minor Roles
Alan Tudyk is a nerd culture mainstay. Very few comic-cons come and go without Tudyk involved in at least one project presenting within them. Tudyk has played Hoban “Wash” Washburne on Firefly and its spinoff movie Serenity, Mr. Nobody on Doom Patrol, and many more beloved characters. His live-action appearances are just the tip of the nerd iceberg, however, with Tudyk providing his voice to everything from Solo: A Star Wars Story (K-2SO) to Harley Quinn (Clayface/The Joker). On Rick and Morty, Tudyk plays several unnamed characters.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Rob Schrab
God
Rob Schrab is a Channel 101 veteran and longtime Harmon collaborator. Schrab is best known for his work as a director of projects like Monster House, Community, Parks and Recreation, and more. On Rick and Morty he plays none other than God…or at least the Zeus-like god of a remote planet.
Jim Gaffigan
Hoovy
Jim Gaffigan is a wildly successful standup comedian who co-created and starred in a TV show about his life for TV Land called The Jim Gaffigan Show. While he’s appeared sparingly in films, of late he’s dabbled in voice acting, lending his voice to Hotel Transylvania 3, Playmobil: The Movie, and Luca. His kindly Midwestern accent lends itself nicely to the helpful but doomed Hoovy on Rick and Morty.
Planetina
Alison Brie
Five seasons in and Rick and Morty is still finding old friends from Community to make their debut. Alison Brie played Annie Edison on Dan Harmon’s classic series. Since then she’s become quite the star, serving as a lead on GLOW and voice acting in BoJack Horseman and The Lego Movie 2. She even provided the voice of Natasha Romanoff a.k.a. Black Widow in the video game Marvel Avengers Academy.
Steve Buscemi
Eddie
Steve Buscemi is a prolific and talented character actor known for his classic roles in Fargo, Reservoir Dogs, The Sopranos, and more. That he plays such a relatively minor role on Rick and Morty suggests that he might be a fan of the show and just wanted to stop by and say hey. Buscemi is also notable for being a New York firefighter prior to his acting life.
Christina Ricci
Princess Ponietta
Once known as a talented child actor, Christina Ricci has continued her creative work into adulthood. The actress has starred in films like Speed Racer, Black Snake Moan, and the upcoming fourth Matrix movie. Bless her for dropping by Rick and Morty only to play an CHUD horse-person princess pregnant with Rick’s heir.
Kyle Mooney
Blazen
Kyle Mooney is an SNL cast member and writer who specializes in offbeat characters and sketches. He also wrote and starred in 2017’s Brigsby Bear. His role hasn’t been officially confirmed on Rick and Morty yet but it seems as though he voices the Mortal Kombat-esque faux badass Blazen.

You’re Taking Up a Fraction of My Mind pt.3
           Jason was exhausted by the time Bruce decided he was done training. His muscles hurt and his brain felt frazzled; Bruce had given him a decent beat down. The older man made Jason aware of how distracted he’d been during training, the bruise forming on his lower bicep from a kick Jason should’ve seen coming and dodged but didn’t. The boy wonder played it off as him just being tired from the night before. Bruce was Bruce, he knew Jason was only telling half the truth but didn’t press the matter further.
           “You’ve been improving, I want you to keep it up.” Bruce said, before adding. “But make sure you’re head’s straight for tonight. I don’t want you slipping again.”
Make sure your head’s straight for tonight.” Bruce told him strictly, “You’ve been improving, I want to see the good work keeping up.”
           Bruce sent him off for a shower and dinner as the sun had already set and their night was soon beginning. Jason scratched his head as he made his way out of the library. Did Bruce just compliment him then insult him? His eyes trailed to his corner when he walked through the secret door and paused. He wanted to go back to this morning, when his body and ego didn’t hurt so much. This morning had been so simple, domestic even; it was the complete opposite of what Jason Todd was and he wasn’t complaining.
           He didn’t mind sharing his secret stash and spot to Halley, which was something he wouldn’t do for anyone else. The way she had her head resting in the crook of his neck, laid up against him, he felt a tingly sensation shot through his body as he thought back to it.
           As he walked through the halls to get to the main stairwell he heard voices coming from the main entry way, pulling a face when the voice was clear as day. What the hell was Grayson doing here?
           “I do wish you would’ve called Master Dick, I would’ve made up your room for you.” Alfred’s chastising voice was heard before Jason completely saw them.
           “Sorry Al, I should’ve of called.” Dick laughed, guiltily rubbing the back of his neck. “It was kind of a last minute thing, you know? I almost couldn’t get the flight I wanted, I had to name drop Bruce to pull some strings.” He laughed again.
           Jason scoffed at his predecessor. Whenever Jason gave Alfred a nickname, he was scolded but Dick had just gave him one and he didn’t say anything. Jason looked at them, debating on going back to hide in his corner of the library for a while until he could get to his room unnoticed. They blocked the path to the stairs and he wasn’t in the mood for Grayson now.
           “Well you’re here now.” Alfred said. “Go bring your bags up to your room, dinner will be ready shortly. I’m afraid it’s nothing special, I’ve been otherwise occupied.”
           Dick had a look of knowing, remembering the message Alfred had left him a few days again. The annual Wayne Enterprises Charity Gala was coming up and the butler was not letting Dick get out of it this year. He was able to get out of it last year, being away on Titan duty. It wasn’t that he totally hated galas, he just preferred to not have to go. The stuffy suit, having to socialize with the snooty elites of Gotham, all he could say was at least the food was always worth it.
           Dick was about to talk but his attention was brought elsewhere, hearing the floor creak. He looked up into the adjacent hall, seeing Jason standing there, almost like a dear caught in headlights. He appeared to be trying to back away, causing Dick to look at him with a cocked eyebrow.
           “Jason,” he greeted almost sternly, the name leaving his lips more harshly than intended.
           It was Jason’s turn to cock an eyebrow. What did he do now? Why was he being glared down by Dick fuckin’ Grayson?  He fixed a smirk on his face, now looking like his normal ‘cool’ self, he greeted him right back, almost sneering as he spoke, “Dick,”
           Dick narrowed his eyes even more, knowing the joke all too well; with a name like his, the joke had long gone stale but the fact that a kid was disrespectful enough to make it, almost set him off. Alfred cleared his throat, breaking the coming fight off before it could start.
           “Master Todd,” Alfred only used last names when he disapproved. “Why don’t you go collect Miss Halley and let her know dinner is almost done. She should still be in her room.” Alfred didn’t as much as sound like he was asking, more of telling.
           “I got it Al,” Dick said quickly after the butler finished. He took in Jason’s sweaty appearance, and noted how he come from the direction of the entrance to the Batcave. It was also a Saturday afternoon and he knew Bruce hadn’t changed since he left. Almost cockily he nodded at the younger boy, “Rough session with Bruce?”
           “No,” Jason spat, crossing his arms against his chest. He was sick of everyone treating him like this; he didn’t even do anything this time. “Quite the opposite actually,” it was a lie, but who the hell did Dick think he was?
           He began his decent up the stairs, his ears perking when he heard Alfred scold Dick, calling him by his last name and saying how that was uncalled for. Jason smirked, knowing that at the end of the day Alfred did care and have his back. He made his way to his room, hearing Dick following a few steps behind him. He reached his door, almost tempted to knock on Halley’s before Dick could but didn’t want to test the older boy, at least in front of Halley.
           Dick waited until Jason was inside his room before knocking on the girl’s door. He waited when he heard her calling out that she was coming. He eyed the doorknob when he heard a click, wondering why she had her door locked. When the door opened he smiled at her, wanting to shout out surprise but decided against doing that.
           She looked up at him a smile on her own face, almost looking eager, but when she realized it was him her face morphed into a different one. She looked taken aback, and almost disappointed? Dick dropped his smile, himself disappointed as she stared up at him for a few seconds silently. He let out a lame hey, his heart beating a million times a minute as she just nodded at him.
           “Hey,” She said back, scanning his face and wondering why he was here. She shook her head, realizing she was being rude. She brought back her smile, only Dick noting that it wasn’t has big as it was when she first opened the door. She fully swung the door open, “Sorry, I just thought you’d be Jason. What are you doing here?”
           Dick followed her into the room, frowning as she spoke. She was expecting Jason, Kori’s words now ringing in the back of his head. He cleared his throat, leaving his bags in the hallway and walked into the room. “I was concerned. You didn’t answer my messages. I wanted to make sure you were okay.”
           Realization struck her face, looking to her nightstand and the phone that had still been left untouched from this morning. She didn’t think before speaking, finding herself doing that a lot more lately than she cared to admit, “I’m sorry, I forgot to respond when I came back into my room later. I saw it this morning when I woke up and was going to but Jason took my phone before I could-, I’m sorry.”
           “You were with Jason this morning?”  Dick eyed her, his eye almost twitching. A pang reached his chest as he looked out into the hall from the open door. He saw Jason’s closed door and swore he felt a blood vessel pop before turning back to Halley.
           “Um, yeah.” She said quietly, now noticing what she did. Fuck, she cursed, wanting to slap herself in the face and push Dick out of her room. When did she become such a girl, she questioned herself. She’s a well-trained assassin; she’s killed people and she’s done terrible things but here she was fumbling over her own worlds and blushing for the hundredth time in days over the stupidest things.
           “I was upset last night, he was making sure I was okay,” She said faltering, trying to make it sound anyway but the way she knew Dick would and was assuming.
           She knew how his mind worked, remembering back when they’d been on a mission together with the Titans and he’d gotten strangely protective and overbearing when they teamed up with Aquaman’s sidekick, Aqualad. Garth had been a flirt but it went right over the girl’s head, never having interacting with someone that way until Dick started pointing it out and sending eye daggers to the Atlantean.
           Dick frowned, letting his eyes trail around her room, not being here in a while; it’d been too long now that he thought about it. He hadn’t been a really good ‘whatever he was to her’ recently, having left after a week or two after she originally returned.  He’d come to visit a couple of times afterwards but never stood for long. He’d just left her here and passed on his responsibility of her to Bruce. It was just too hard for him to stay at the manor for that long. He worked so hard to escape Bruce’s shadow and being back was a constant remember as to why he left. But maybe it was time to move back to Gotham, he pondered.
           “How are you?” He asked, noting the pile of clothes at the foot of her bed, which was still left unmade. The room wasn’t a total wreck but he couldn’t help but noticed how it wasn’t up to Alfred’s standards. He chuckled, knowing that he probably hasn’t seen the room in this state yet, because injury or not, Alfred would not let this fly. He moved to start making her bed, not wanting her to overdo it.
           “You don’t have to do that,” she hurried over to swat his hands away, moving to start pulling the sheets up herself. He swatted her away, giving her a cheeky smile and telling her to start working on putting her clothes away. She didn’t fight him and moved away from the bed.
           “You didn’t answer my question,” He said, looking up from his work.
           “I’m fine.” She shrugged, reaching down to grab the t-shirts to start folding them.
           He could tell she wasn’t being honest as she bit the inside of her cheek. He knew it was a nervous habit of hers and constantly reprimanded her to stop doing it. Do you really want to get sores in your mouth, he’d scold her. He also knew she wasn’t being honest with him because she refused to fully look him in the eyes. He let out a large sigh, fluffy out her pillows after finishing pulling up the sheets and comforter up.
           “Gotham’s tough,” He started, laying the pillows up against the headboard. “It’s not like back in Jump City where we run around chasing boozo’s like Doctor Light or Mad Mod. Sure, we get the occasional guy like Brother Blood, but it’s not like anything here. I shouldn’t have just thrown you out here alone.” Dick frowned, his tone apologetic and laced with guilt.
           Halley unclenched her jaw, busying herself with putting the folded shirts into her dresser. She shrugged her shoulders, brushing him off. She didn’t want to keep dwelling on last night. Whenever she dwelled on things she’d find herself spiraling soon after until she couldn’t deal with it and run. And it wasn’t like last time where she could go back to the tower and leave the manor. Granted, she technically could, the Titan’s made it pretty clear she’d always be welcomed but this time around she found herself not wanting leave the manor.
           “It’s okay to be upset, Halley,” Dick pressed, determined to get his point across not understanding that he was only making her clamp up even more.
           “I just don’t want to talk to you about it.” She said, her short temper simmering slowly. She bit her lip as she saw her words had genially upset Dick. The man she knew to never shut up was rendered speechless and she couldn’t help but feel bad. She tried retracting her statement and apologize but he raised his hand at her to stop.
           “It’s okay,” He said softly. He crossed his arms across his broad chest. It was his turn to bit his lip before speaking, his voice calm but sounding regretful. “We used to be really close. You used to tell me everything and now you’re not.” He began now taking a seat on the edge of the bed with a heavy sigh.
           “You call Kori instead of me. You’re going to parties now, going out with friends and-,” he wanted to bring up Jason but stopped himself. “I just don’t know anything about what’s going on in your life anymore.” He paused, knowing he wanted to bring up one of their parting conversations when she returned to Gotham, him blaming it partially on why she’d been so distant from him recently. “Ever since I told you about your brother and what happen with Slade, things have been different between us.”
           Halley winced after he brought it up, having tried pushing the conversation far into the back of her mind. After her father brought up having a family that he kept from her, he’d also mentioned how Dick and the Titan’s knew as well and never told her. She’d been hurt that she’d been lied to by not only her father but Dick. She wasn’t surprised her father lied, but Dick, she understood why he did but Dick was supposed to never lie to her, she’d put all her trust in him. She had forgiven him though, after he finally sat her down in her room in Titans Tower and told her everything.
           She vaguely remembers the time when her father left her in the care of his associate, Wintergreen,    as he went off to do a job without her. It was around the time when he first started taking her on jobs, but this one he deemed her to underqualified for, her later figuring out why. Deathstroke had been hired to kill Donna Troy, who had been Wonder Girl, until her father did the job.
           Dick told her that it was still one of his biggest regrets and if he could he would take it back. He’d yet found out about he but he told her that he figured out Deathstroke had another kid, had a family. It made sense now that she thought back. He’d leave her with Wintergreen every now and then, sometimes for a few days, sometimes for weeks and now she knew why; he’d go back and play house with his wife and son while she’d been forced to train and have her childhood taken away from her.
           Dick had inserted himself in her older brother Jericho’s life, formed a friendship with him. It was all fake of course, Dick was just using him to get information on Deathstroke. The friendship was one-sided at first, Dick said but then said he started to actually grow fond of the boy and began to back off, realizing just how wrong what he was doing was. But he said Jericho was persistent, not okay with Dick cutting him off suddenly. Dick said he was going to come clean and explain everything to her brother but her father had caught onto what Dick was doing and followed them as they met one day. Too no surprise, her father tried killing Dick but Jericho, who had no idea about his father’s life, stepped in the way; the bullet intended for Dick met Jericho and that’s how her father’s hatred for Dick Grayson and the Titan’s began.
           That hadn’t been the reason why Halley hadn’t been talking to Dick as much as before. It did make her look at him a different way though. She still saw him for who he was but she also saw him as someone who’d made mistakes. She had always saw him as this perfect and happy person, incapably of anything terrible. She looked up to him and as cheesy and pathetic as it sounded, she looked up to him like a hero.
           “It’s not because of that,” she tried to ensure him, moving to sit next to him. “I forgave you for that. That wasn’t all your fault. My father was just as to blame as you, even more so. He should’ve known to not do anything with his son there.” She placed a comforting hand on his arm, knowing how it still ate him up inside.
           She let out a sigh that could’ve been misconstrued as one of annoyance. She wasn’t annoyed at him, she was just sick of there always being some big dramatic conversation waiting to be happened every other day at this rate. Everything was so complicated all the time.
           “I-I just don’t know how to talk to you about certain stuff, I guess.” She settled.
           It wasn’t a lie. She really didn’t want to go talking to Dick Grayson about her current issues, if that’s what she even wanted to call them. He’d be the last person she’d think to call for help putting an outfit together for a party or for advice on why Jason had been acting so stupid. She just didn’t see those conversations ending well. And the whole Zsasz thing, well, she just wanted to move on from it and if she had to keep talking about it she never would; Jason had already helped her move past it for the most part and then Dick had to show up and bring it back up.
           “Well I just want you to know that I’m here to listen.” Dick nodded, knowing that it’d be best to drop everything. For now, anyways. He patted his hands on his knees, standing up, trying to instantly go back to his normal chipper self. “Dinner?”
           “I’m not that hungry but it’s not like Alfred will let me skip out,” she chuckled, standing up herself as the pair began to head downstairs.
           Dick eyed Jason as he excited his room right as they had, as if he’d been ease-dropping and knew they were leaving, Dick noted with a eyebrow raised. Halley greeted Jason with a smile, asking him how training was. Dick listened to their conversation as they walked, staying a pace behind them. He totally caught that look Jason shot her as she laughed about something he said. Oh, he was definitely thinking it was time to move back to Gotham.

Reasons I shouldn’t be allowed to make new OCs:
It’s 1 AM and I’m getting vivid flashes of details for a side character in my current WIP who has no real place in it and didn’t even exist an hour ago but now is getting out of control. He’s dressed as the 80s, full on suspenders, striped parachute pants and shirt with ridiculous retro patterns that belong on a drink cup and not a piece of clothing, is named after the Goblin King in Labyrinth, and has hair and glasses like Garth from Wayne’s World. He’s paranoid, but the government trusts him with their secret department, and his first line is about how he was conceived at a drive in theatre to a David Bowie musical number. Who is this man? Who let this terrible concept enter my brain? And why am I so endeared to him already?

Hello,
I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the first chapter of Forgot to Love You, I’ve actually got a whole story going for it for the time being so I hope you continue to enjoy it! Here’s the second chapter, also able to be found here:

Not Ex-Husband...
Raven survived the rest of her night by the skin of her teeth, which was why she felt so utterly exhausted walking into her hotel room, peeling off her painful heels, and undoing her complicated Viking braids. Dolphin had had a lot of fun with Raven’s hair earlier today and she had just left her friend’s work in place. Gingerly peeling off the loose, soft, skimpy red dress she dropped it to the floor as she walked for her bed, collapsing on it.
Right now she was just immensely happy she hadn’t taken up her uncle’s offer on taking the guest room in his penthouse, she just wanted peace.
Rolling over she stared at the ceiling, pulling her covers up to her chin as she thought about tonight. Specifically her ex-husband was on her mind, it hadn’t been long ago when he had been on her mind last time.
‘So what’s a girl like you doing in a place like this?’ he had chuckled, pressing his glass to his bruised cheek.
‘Probably the same thing a place like this is doing in a guy like you,’ she mused.
‘Ooo! A Deadpool fan!’ he mused.
‘Obviously,’ she had laughed gesturing to her shirt; the crude drawing of Deadpool shooting Francis while screaming ‘Where’s Francis!?’
‘Well, love, it’s a pleasure to meet you,’ he offered his hand.
‘Raven,’ she had said as she shook his hand. His lips brushed her bruised and bloodied knuckles.
‘Jason,’ he smiled with his split lip. He was devilishly handsome.
It was only later, she thought bitterly, that she learned he was there trying to get over a heartbreak. His fiancée; Donna; had run off with his best man; Roy Harper, and Raven had watched it on the media. From the safety of her family ranch in New Mexico while she plotted out her next moves.
She had gone to Hawaii to study humpback whales with Garth. She had stayed with the Curry family for two years, and in that time she had mastered surfing, gotten over her heartbreak, lived on a boat, went swimming in the reefs, learned to snorkel, and scuba dive, and got to survive loosing her mom. Lucifer and Maze had been most sympathetic to her plight, but they didn’t know the whole story. Only that she had met a guy in New Zealand, fallen hard and fast for him and it was all a mistake. She had never told them she married the guy, or that she had married him in a drunken haze that she couldn’t remember.
Everyday since she had left was a struggle not to call Jason, not to turn around and go back to ruin his life. Raven couldn’t do that to the man, he was just too good for her. He didn’t even know how good he was, and that was what made it all the more painful in her mind. He didn’t know what she was capable of, or what she’d do, he didn’t know how far she could go to survive or how horrible she could truly be. They were friends, people who just clicked together like old friends, and it had worked. Jason had made her happy, and she knew she’d ruin him if she stayed. She ruined everything afterall.
Her phone buzzed which had her picking it up as she fought her heavy eyes and stared at the simple text from Jason.
-Can we grab some coffee tomorrow? We need to talk.
Simple, neat, to the point. He was always to the point. Raven looked at the clock, wincing at the time then she looked at the text again.
-Can’t do coffee in the morning, how about lunch?
She kicked herself for offering to spend more time with him, after all she was his vacation mistake.
-Sure, still like Thai?
-Yes.
-I got a place, want me to get you?
-Sure. I’m staying at LUX.
-I’ll txt before I come
-ok. Nite.
She dropped her phone before rolling over and staring out her window at the lights of LA. She had no idea why she was doing this. He was the ex-husband! They had parted, on good terms even. Though she supposed he had more questions for her because she had just left him with three things before she had run off.
Closing her eyes she saw that moment when she knew this was all a huge vacation mistake.
She had come rushing down to the lobby on the phone, negotiating with the airlines to get back to Colorado; Durango, where her mom was hospitalized. It had taken her an over a day, with multiple airlines, and her uncle fast tracking her money and getting her shortcuts, to get back stateside. Raven had jogged into the lobby to see him with a woman who looked like a gorgeous model.
The other woman; who she would later learn was Donna Troy, Princess of Greece, sister to the Queen; Diana Prince; was tall, almost as tall as Jason was, long curly black hair, and features of a Greek Goddess. Raven wanted to punch the woman in her stupid face, but knew she couldn’t, especially when the woman grabbed Jason, spun him to her and kissed him. Raven had bolted at that sight; because she knew she couldn’t handle that and she ran for a lawyer. Drawing up the divorce was quick and simple, because she and Jason had shared nothing and nothing was in each other’s name, she also laughed it off as a drunk mistake.
Once all that was taken care of, she had gone to her hotel, he wasn’t there, so she packed up. Leaving him with a brief note, the papers, and the ring she grabbed her bags and ran for the airport with her passport in hand. She had made it to her gate, barely, had her stuff mailed to her and made it to the States in the span of twenty-seven hours. Literally forty hours after she’d gotten the call from her aunt that her mom was in the hospital and her stepfather didn’t think her mom had much time.
~~~*~*~*~~~
Jason stood in his hotel, staring out at the city, smiling a bit at the text Raven had sent him saying night, and slipped it into his pocket.
He had never told anyone, but his grandfather, Alfred, that Raven leaving him had royally pissed him off. And even then, he wasn’t mad at her, he was mad with himself. Raven was, hands down, the best damn thing to ever happen to him at the second worst point in his entire life.
The day he was supposed to get married to Donna Troy, his childhood sweetheart, and first love, she runs into the room he was getting ready and demanded to know how he felt about her. Not the best timing, he got it, but him not giving her an immediate answer had her blurting out everything she felt. They’d been together for so long, even when they had both had wild affairs, or been broken up, that they just landed back together because it’s what everyone expected of them. They were expected of everyone, from around the world, and Donna said that she was tired of it. She wanted to know what they wanted, just them and not what the world wanted of them. Jason didn’t have an answer for that, because he had honestly never thought about it.
Donna Troy was his endgame.
Always had been.
When he was a PJ, when he was Bruce Wayne’s billionaire screw up, when he was the punk teenager, he had never thought about it. Donna Troy was just there, and they were the endgame for each other. Or so he had thought.
She had, in her frustrations and fury, blurted out that she’d been having an affair with his best friend; Roy Harper, for years, and that’s when he had started in on her. The only times he had ever dated anyone else or slept with anyone else was when he was certain they were not together. They both lost their tempers, she ran from the church in her wedding gown, with Roy in hand, and the media had exploded with it.
Jason, in his spiteful fury towards his family and fiancée had taken the honeymoon tickets and taken the trip. Two weeks into his running away attempt he had withdrawn a shit ton of cash, ditched his credit cards, and his former cellphone, taken his private passport, and left with nothing but his go-bag from France, and made his way to Australia. Somehow, and he still wasn’t entirely sure about how, he had landed in New Zealand, and the first night there; in some hole in the wall, divvy pub he had met Raven Rachel Roth.
She was in New Zealand, finishing her exchange program, studying to be a Marine Biologist to work with her best friend; Garth Curry; who was studying orca hunting patterns in New Zealand at the time. She loved to read; probably more than he did, which was a true feat in his mind; she adored New York pizza, rooted for the New York Mets, believed in Magic, loved dogs, and animals as a whole, wanted to help people, and was probably a bigger tea lover than Alfred. He thought her to be the most mesmerizing person he had ever met. She was beautiful, quiet, commanding and classy. She was classy as fuck when she was cursing like a sailor after kicking ass; she might be a pacifist, but she knew how to kick ass when the time called for it.
He found her to be the most interesting person he had ever met, though she was eerily quiet and gentle.
He didn’t know what it was about Raven, but they just clicked, it was like he had known her all his life with how they were. Which was the only reason when he had woken up with a naked Raven in his arms, and a marriage certificate he didn’t remember getting, that he didn’t freak out. While she finished her program, he sorted out his shit, picking up an odd job or two repairing boats, cars, and even a few planes. Raven hadn’t let him move in with her, her dorm was occupied by messy roommates, so he had let her live in his hotel room. He had been contemplating getting a flat so they could stay together and sort their shit out.
Though that all changed in the span of a day.
He’d been walking for his hotel when Donna had materialized in front of him. He had been texting Raven about dinner plans, intending to talk to her about their marriage and the next thing they should do. Her program was coming to a close, and he knew she had family stateside. He wanted her to meet his family, and he wondered if she wanted him to meet hers; she had talked animatedly about them, but also vaguely.
Donna was just standing there, dressed in cream, looking like a classic Greek goddess; not a single curl out of place as her dark eyes assessed him carefully for hints. He didn’t know what to think, brushing her off to try to escape, when she had pleaded to talk with him. Apparently, his family was freaking out because no one could find him, and she had hired a PI to track him down. Jason thought they were all being over dramatic, he was royally pissed, and hurt, and had every damn right to feel that way. Also humiliated, greatly humiliated.
But this was Donna and they were Donna and Jason so he couldn’t blow her off like he wanted to do. However, he would do anything to keep the Princess of Greece away from the woman he loved, because he did not need Donna to attack Raven. He knew she’d do it, Donna had done it to all his other exes in the past; Kara, Isabel, Artemis, Violet, so he wanted her as far away from Raven as he could get her. He’d been shocked when Donna had casually pulled him into a kiss; like muscle memory, but he didn’t kiss her back. Instead he had pushed her away and told her very firmly they weren’t do that again; ever, and if she thought differently, he’d happily escort her to the Greek Embassy and walk away. Jason had no problem walking away from her without talking to her, he had zero problems with it.
Instead they had walked, walked to a different, far more upscale hotel where his father was waiting for him with two of his siblings, and Alfred. Jason wanted to be pissed, he did, especially when he saw Roy, but he couldn’t find it in him to be pissed. He had Raven, and that didn’t make the world better, but it made him alright.
It had taken over a day of interrogation before his family was satisfied, he hadn’t been abducted, but they wanted to meet Raven. By the time he had finally gotten them to come around to the idea that he had made a friend who was not in the service with him, or someone they knew, and got them to want to meet her, she was gone. Hotel concierge had told him she had run out of here with her bags in a hurry for the airport, and that she looked panicked.
Jason had rushed up to their room to find nothing but the divorce papers, a note and the gaudy ring he had gotten her when he was drunk.
He had never felt so terrified as then, she was gone. Like she had never been there. All her things were packed and gone, not a stray piece of clothing or even the socks she’d stuff in between the couch cushions, a hoodie of his was also gone, and he didn’t know if she had done that intentionally or not. But whatever had called her off must’ve been important, because she’d have never left her program without reason. All he had was a note, the divorce papers, and that gaudy ring.
She had laughed at the ring, endlessly laughing and wore it on a chain around her neck, not on her finger; it was too big for her slim hands in her mind. Though she wore thousands of slim rings on her fingers, but not that one. That one was always worn around her neck on a chain. He hadn’t signed the divorce papers, he couldn’t, he didn’t know what went wrong with them to make her actually get them. The papers were straightforward, they had shared no assets, or joined households; they had been two independent people bound by a Catholic Captain; Daniel Cassidy, on a ship for whale watching, into the holy sacrament of marriage. Jason’s mom would’ve skinned him alive if she knew he had the divorce papers; as his mom had been Catholic and didn’t believe in divorce. That’s part of how he had become Bruce Wayne’s son actually.
But she was gone.
Her note was simple, straight to the point, and blunt.
Dear Jason,
Something’s come up, I must go, right now. I’m sorry. I don’t know what to do, but I feel this is for the best, it was a delight meeting you and I will always consider you my dearest of friends. But our time has come to an end, and I’m sorry. I wish you all the best. I’ll let you go, so I think it’s best you let me go.
Forever, with Love,
Raven
She had given him every out she thought he would need, but he couldn’t bring himself to sign those papers. Nor could he get rid of the note. He now wore her wedding ring on the chain, under his shirt, he kept her note neatly folded in his wallet, and the divorce papers in a folder in his suitcase; on the off chance they ran into each other and she truly wanted that bloody divorce.
He hadn’t looked for her, though he could easily track Garth down and demand to know where she was. Her line ‘I don’t know what to do’ always struck him as her way of saying she was scared, and she wanted to do this alone, the divorce was so she could do it alone. He wouldn’t file it though, he couldn’t.
With great reluctance he had followed his family back to Gotham. Dick was miffed when Jason bought a Mets mug, though Jason despised the Mets as the eternal rival of the Gotham Knights. Tim thought he was heartbroken over Donna and promptly tried to set him up on several dates with the help of Duke and Stephanie. Cass insisted he was sad and always tried to get him to talk about it. Damian thought he was dramatic and should take Donna back; which had had Jason punching his baby brother in the mouth, because he’d never go back to Donna. Terry, Helena, B Jr., and Tommy mostly thought he had a dark secret and tried to uncover it.
Jason had only told Alfred about Raven, and shown Alfred the photos, the proof that she existed; though she had tried to erase herself from his life pretty damn well. Alfred approved of her, and continuously tried to push him to hunt her down, even after Alfred had read the note. Jason thought Alfred had valid points, but he couldn’t.
Until Australia, he had actively not thought about Raven, until that terrifying call. Much to B’s frustrations, and his family’s fury, he had dropped everything at the drop of a hat and bolted. Alfred and Selina had arranged his flight.
She was gone by the time he got there, nary a trace of her.
It was B’s wife, Selina who had tracked her down and done a casual run in with her to confirm she was alive for him. Selina had run into Raven in Seattle, where she was at the time, dating a man named Garfield Logan, and living with a woman named Rose Wilson. She was alright, and in one piece, Jason had nearly collapsed at the news, but resolved to stay away from her so she could be happy. She was dating someone, she had built another little life for herself, and he wanted her happy.
It was the only time he had considered signing the divorce papers and letting her go fully.
He hadn’t though.
He could never figure out why. He could never get the nerve to call her, to reconnect, nor could he find it in him to sign the bloody divorce papers. He kind of hoped she’d find out and track him down to yell at him, but she hadn’t ever come. Five years and she had never come after him, it unnerved him until tonight.
Setting his drink aside he walked to his bed and sat on it as he thought over Raven and what seeing her had stirred up.
Tomorrow he would talk to her, tomorrow he would tell her they were not divorced and he would beg, on his hands and knees if he had to, beg her for a second chance. He would do whatever she wanted, but he didn’t want to let her go; never again.
Raven cursed God for creating morning, she cursed existence for it, and she cursed her Aunt for calling her about Passover plans, and if she’d make it to Long Island for the celebration with her grandfather and cousins. Raven had barely said sure before hanging up and cursing morning. Coffee was not her normal poison but after last night with Rose, Joe, Kyd, and Slade, she needed it. Glancing at the time she saw that it was almost time for lunch, cursing the existence of family, people, and general morning issues she stumbled into the shower. Once cleaned a bit, she twisted her hair up into a large bun pinned to her head with two heirloom hairpins. Her outfit was her Wright jersey, and jeans before texting her ex-husband she was ready for lunch with him while she sipped her coffee and walked out of LUX. Luci and Maze were not awake yet, so she didn’t have to deal with their interrogation; yet.
Jason texted that he’d be there in fifteen.
She just hummed to herself and sipped her coffee; wishing for the millionth time it was November or October so she could have pumpkin spice flavoring. But alas, it was February and not the time of year for pumpkin flavoring.
Jason pulled up in a black Audi, she got in before he could get the door for her and she sunk into the warm seat. Though she had a leather jacket, and didn’t get cold, she would admit she was exhausted.
“You look like death warmed over,” he remarked which had her glaring at him.
“Do you realize what a pain in the ass, not one, but three bridezillas are!?” she demanded. “I was up until three in the morning just trying to diffuse the flower crisis between Dad, Kyd and Joe! Then Alice calls me at eleven in the morning wanting to know if I’ll be home for Passover.”
“Really?”
“Wherever we’re going better have copious amounts of coffee because after lunch I have to go deal with the tailor.”
“Then I’ll take us someplace else,” he promised. “No Thai.”
“I want this wedding over with!” she whined.
“Could be a shotgun wedding they don’t remember,” he chuckled.
“That’s not going to happen,” she sighed regretfully. She was insanely happy for Joe and Kyd; especially because Joe had been so nervous about coming out as Pansexual, but Slade, Rose, Grant, and her had been prepared to be nothing but supportive; she still had the Pride banners shoved in her closet from the parade she did with Joe and Kyd last year. Though she was miffed at a lesbian trying to get into her pants; that had gotten ugly.
“Well, not everyone can be as fortunate as us,” he teased.
“Everyone else remembers their wedding,” she pointed out. “Also, if my family found out I got married but didn’t have a huge, traditional Jewish wedding, I think they’d perish!”
“You’re Jewish?”
“I love bacon,” she deadpanned.
He laughed. She forgotten how beautiful his laugh was; it wasn’t fair that he got to show up and remind her how beautiful and amazing he was. And it wasn’t fair that she couldn’t have him, Donna Troy was dating him again according to the tabloids; and she hated the Princess for it. But Jason deserved the best, and that was not her.
“Yes, my family is Jewish, my grandfather survived Dachau, his family was set to Auschwitz,” Raven answered.
“Damn, I didn’t know,” he said softly, his hand caught hers and his thumb gently rubbed her knuckles. “My mom was Irish Catholic,” he informed her.
“I bet our wedding would’ve been a riot then,” she decided with a soft laugh.
“Probably,” he chuckled. She withdrew her hand and wrapped it around her warm travel mug. “So the wedding, I didn’t know you had a brother.”
“I have two step brothers, and a step sister,” she answered honestly. “I have an adopted brother, too.”
He nodded as he drove them onto the freeway and started heading north.
“So how’ve you been Jason?”
“Fine, been nonstop work since New Zealand, I’m taking over the West Coast branch, Tim’s taking over the East Coast,” he answered. “I also have some international business I take care of.”
“That’s great.”
“I am just thankful to be moving away from my family finally,” he chuckled.
“You adore them and you know it.”
“That’s not the point, they’re overwhelming, other than Cat and Alfred.”
“Cat and Alfred?”
“Sorry, Selina is B’s second wife, and we call her Cat because she loves cats, and Alfred is kind of our grandfather.”
“Cool.”
“How about you?”
“Well, I move a lot, Garth and I still work together, with my brother Victor,” she answered. “My family gripes a lot that I’m not around enough because we travel all the time, but they get it. They’re supportive, even if that means a lot of Facetime calls.”
“That’s great,” he smiled; she saw it was a genuine smile which had her shyly returning it.
“So what about you? Anyone special?” she asked.
“Special?”
“Dating! I see the tabloids Jay,” she chuckled. “So you and Donna are you rebounding to serious again?” she questioned. She hated asking, mainly cause she still wanted to claw Donna’s eyes out, but the woman was a Princess, she was more than worthy for Jason Todd.
Raven didn’t notice his knuckles whitening on the wheel as they both stared at the road.
“No,” he answered softly. “I will never get serious with Donna again. We’re… we’re just trying to be friends, and it’s not easy,” he admitted.
“Being friends with exes is never easy,” Raven assured him.
“What about you?”
“Me?”
“You know, dating,” he chuckled.
She grimaced remembering her few failed attempts at dating. “No, not really. The last guy I dated had asked me out to make my sister jealous; it worked, they’ve been together for two years. And there’ve been a few dates, here and there, but no sparks or attraction,” she shrugged.
She didn’t notice him relax a little.
“Shame,” he decided neutrally.
“You know what I miss, and I blame you entirely for it,” she asked.
“What?”
“Sex,” she blurted out. He roared with laughter as they sped down the freeway.
“Really!?”
“Before you I had never had sex, because of you I have impossibly high standards for sex that no one will ever be able to meet!” she whined.
“I can solve that,” he offered.
“Maybe,” she shrugged dismissively; it’d never happen. Not with him. He was a galaxy away from her league.
“I missed you Rae,” he chuckled.
“Same,” she admitted with a smile. “So where are we going?”
“A place with sandwiches and coffee,” he promised.
“Oh Thank God,” she moaned. “Sorry, I haven’t eaten since yesterday afternoon, and I didn’t get a great nights sleep.”
“No need to explain Rae,” he promised.
“Well, it’s just…” she sighed as she rubbed her brow. This wasn’t about coffee and sandwiches with her ex-husband. “This isn’t just about having lunch with you Jason.”
“I kind of figured.”
“You did?” her head snapped over to study his relaxed profile.
“It’s not just lunch for me either Rae,” he said and looked over at her with a serious, guarded expression.
“I’m sorry,” she murmured. “For… for everything,” she sighed.
“No,” he said so harshly and firmly she just stared dumbly at him.
“What?”
“You have no reason to be sorry, for any of this,” he said. “You tried to do the right thing, I’m sorry I didn’t come after you five years ago so we could talk, a real talk, about this.”
“I…”
“No, let me say this because you talked last night and I need to say this.”
“Okay.”
“You met me after Donna had left me at the altar and ran off with my best friend, and brother in arms. And you helped me through a truly terrible, humiliating point in my life, and I never thanked you for that. You didn’t push or pry or try to make me feel things I didn’t, or were expect to. You were there, you were my friend, my wife, and I’m sorry I didn’t make you feel valued enough or safe enough to come to me for help when you needed it. I’m sorry you felt the need to run off on your own rather than come to me. And I’m sorry you saw Donna kiss me, and I’m sorry.”
“It’s alright, Jason, it was a vacation mistake,” she shrugged.
“No, it’s not alright, Raven,” he said it firmly. “Donna was the mistake. You were not.”
“She’s the Princess of Greece, Jason, I’m… me, I’m the mistake,” she said confidently. She knew she was the mistake here, no way in a million years he’d have even stuck with her once they got back to reality, and she went trapezing off with Garth and Vic to study the ocean he’d realize what a terrible mistake they were.
“Rae,” he spoke softly and she glanced back at him. “You are the best damn thing that has ever happened to me. And we’re here.”
“I dibs the tuna sandwich,” she warned him as they got out of the car. He got the door for her, she nodded as she passed. He got them a table, it was only after the starstruck waitress left that he turned his attention back on her.
“Tuna is all mine,” he decided.
“That’s declaring war,” she warned.
“Perhaps,” he shrugged.
“How about we split two sandwiches, I’ll give you half my tuna for the crabcake!”
“Deal!”
“Excellent,” she chuckled. “And Jason, just so you know, you don’t have to lie to make me feel better about us.”
“I’m not lying,” he said.
“Sure you’re not.” She snorted and smiled as she put the menu aside and sipped her coffee. She still wanted pumpkin spice, she cursed autumn for being so far away.
“Rae, you and I, it was the best damn thing to happen to me,” he stated it firmly.
“You are surprisingly happy about us for an ex-husband, are you all this way or just you exclusively?”
“Well, it’s not an ex-husband thing, because that’s kind of what we’re here to talk about,” he said.
“How is it not an ex-husband thing?”
“Kind of like how this isn’t an ex-wife meeting,” he answered. “I never signed the papers Raven.”
She felt all the blood drain from her face as the waitress came over to take their order. He placed the order and waited for her to respond.
“You… you what!?” she sputtered dumbly.
“Never signed them, Rae,” he answered. “So technically, we’re husband and wife.”
“But… but…” she stammered dumbly not knowing what to say to that. “I… WHY!?” she hissed.
“Because,” he answered.
“That’s not a reason to stay married to a person Jason! Especially when I’ve tried dating other people!” she hissed. She was so going to Hell for adultery now.
“No, you didn’t know,” he answered. “But I couldn’t sign them or file them.”
“You should! You should right now!” she insisted.
“No,” he repeated calmly.
“Jason!” she hissed.
“Raven.”
“This is SERIOUS! If you don’t sign those papers, and people find out that… and… we’ll, the media will crucify you! And your family will join them!” she hissed.
“Let them,” he shrugged. “I was serious Rae.”
“I don’t even remember us getting married!”
“Neither do I, but nonetheless, we are,” he said levelly.
She groaned as she hid her face in her hands and wanted to tear her hair out of her head in frustration now.
“Rae, love, look at me,” he pleaded. She glared at him through the fringes of hair now cascading around her face. Oh she was pissed, the hardest thing she had ever had to do, even harder than saying goodbye to her mother or watching her family fall apart because of her biological father, was saying goodbye to the man she had married. And worse, she had known it was the right thing to do. Drunken mistakes should not be consequences for life, and she had been able to fix theirs with a simple divorce!
“I’m… I fixed our mistake! I did everything to fix it!” she snapped.
“I couldn’t sign the papers because I never could view it as a mistake,” he answered levelly. “And if you’re willing, I would like to try again.”
“Oh no,” she gasped. She could feel her chest tightening in panic, as her heart slammed in her ribs. “No. I… No, I can’t do this, no.”
“Why not?”
“Because I’m a mistake Jason!” she snapped. “I’m a mistake and this marriage between us, only happened because we were drunk off our asses and, on a boat, somehow; and I still don’t know how we got on the boat because the last thing I remember is the pub! Also, you’re… you were, are, engaged to a Princess, how the hell can I compete with that! You’re American Royalty, Jason! Your Dad is the richest man in the world, and I… I’m me!” she sputtered.
“You loved me when you thought I was just Jason Todd, mechanic,” he pointed out.
“This isn’t about the money Jason,” she sighed.
“Then what’s it about?”
“You deserve better than me,” she stated.
“I think it’s the other way around love,” he said softly. “The day you left, the day Donna came to take me home, I was coming home to you, to talk to you about us getting a flat, and seeing where you wanted to go from New Zealand. If Donna hadn’t intercepted me, I’d have come back with you, immediately, no questions asked, no expectations. You’re my wife Raven.”
“Doesn’t mean we should be together!” she snapped.
“I think you and I got married for a reason, drunk or not, and I think we should give this a real shot,” he said firmly.
“Jason…”
“I would have called you five years ago if I wasn’t so damn scared, or hurt, and I would’ve come for you immediately, always regretted that I didn’t. So please, please, I’ll do anything for a second shot with you,” he said softly.
“Jason, sign the papers,” she pleaded. “You’ll… you deserve to be happy; I don’t make people happy.”
“How about, we date, try dating, and if it doesn’t work out, I’ll sign the papers,” he bartered.
Raven stared at him; she didn’t know what to make of that.
“A date?”
“Can’t a man ask his wife on a date?”
“I…”
“We didn’t do the whole dating thing the first time around, and I would like to remedee that this time,” he said levelly.
“We skipped straight to the marriage, and wild sex,” she muttered as they were served. They both waited for the waitress to leaven before she automatically swiped half his sandwich and he took half of hers.
“I missed the sex too,” he chuckled. “You broke my standards, no one else compares.”
“Oh Thank God That’s Ruined For You Too,” she laughed as she took a bite of her tuna sandwich.
“You ruined many things Rae, like tea, I still can’t figure out how you made that one tea to make me sleep, but I can’t remake it for the life of me. I’ve almost cried craving it,” he chuckled.
“You ruined waffles for me,” she warned. “I mean no one can make them right, I cried on my kitchen floor one morning I wanted them so badly. The chocolate chip ones with strawberries,” she moaned at the mere memory.
“Good book conversations,” he stated. “I joined a book club I was so desperate to talk books, intelligently, turns out that was mostly a gossip group; all four of the ones I joined.”
“Ha!” she stuck her tongue out at him for that, he had told them to join a book club when they had first married and enjoyed talking books. “I told you they weren’t what you thought!”
“Some of them must be actual book clubs but I haven’t found one.”
“Could be because you’re Jason Todd.”
“Very possible.”
“But we don’t have to be married to do things like that, I can give you the tea recipe and we can be friends who talk books,” she offered.
“Rae, it’s not just about that,” he chuckled.
“Sure it is, I’ll be your friend, but I don’t think I should be your wife,” she said firmly.
“Little bird, I’m not divorcing you, besides you need to keep the insurance,” he said firmly.
“About that, I should pay you back.”
“Don’t you dare,” he warned lowly. She stared at his fierce, guarded expression. “And don’t even think about changing me from your emergency contact!”
~~~*~*~*~~~
He didn’t want her to pay him back for taking care of her, she would never understand how much she had taken care of him. And when she brought it up it reminded him how neatly she had erased herself from his life, how she had promised to remove him as her emergency contact. That had actually been a fight between them when they were barely friends. A bar fight landed him in the hospital, and he had to call someone, apparently, they were going to call his grandfather when he convinced them to call the girl he had hooked up with the night before, Raven. Raven had been shocked but had come to help him get discharged, and the ensuing arguments had led to them agreeing to be each other’s emergency contact while they were in New Zealand. The wedding had happened after that by about a week.
“I…”
“You terrified me, Rae,” he stated. “I came back to the hotel room and everything of you was gone, including our photos. You just… you erased yourself from my life, and I swear I couldn’t take it if you removed me as your emergency contact. I’m your husband, I deserve to know if you’re in trouble.”
“Ex-husband.”
“I haven’t signed the papers, and they’re safely hidden away so you can’t make me,” he pointed out. He felt a bit smug about that statement as she glared at him.
“I signed them!”
“I know, and it still terrifies me that you could do it so easily,” he stated. He saw her flinch, and he knew. Just one look at her and he knew, that it hadn’t been easy for her. None of this was easy, but he got the sense that this was also his fault for waiting five years. He hadn’t lost her yet, but he got a feeling that he was precariously close to if he wasn’t careful. There was very little about her, what made her make her decisions, that he actually knew and if he wasn’t careful he knew he could lose her. She already seemed to hold a low opinion of her value, and she seemed skittish about having someone in her life who wasn’t family. Though the skittish aspect of her was always there, if he moved to quickly, or raised his voice a certain amount she’d jump, she’d flinch, and he remembered her nightmares, though very few, were very intense. Something had happened to her, before he had met her, something that made her skittish; made her this way, and he should’ve chased her five years ago to not let it manifest further, but he hadn’t. Things to add to his list of regrets.
“I did what I thought was best, for us, as people in a situation we didn’t sign up for.”
“I have a marriage certificate that says we did sign up for this.”
“Jason, I… I’m not the best person for someone like you,” she started.
“I think you’re the best person I’ve ever met, Raven.”
“Jason…” she sighed as she dragged her hand through her hair.
“Can you please just consider giving us a shot, a real shot?” he asked.
“I…”
“I would like to take you, not my guilt stricken wife, out,” he reiterated it. “I would like to take you out.”
“Like a hit or a date?”
“I’ll leave that to be a surprise.”
“I don’t like surprises,” she muttered.
“Well, then we’re a hell of a surprise,” he mused. “Please Rae. I would like to take my beautiful, estranged wife out on a date, have fun, and no expectations.”
“I gave you the divorce papers so we wouldn’t have expectations.”
“You gave us an out, and I’m not out yet,” he said levelly.
“Fine,” she threw up her hands in defeat. “I’ll go on a date with my idiotic ex-husband.”
He smiled in triumph and stole one of her fries.
“HEY! Hands off!” she snapped as she snatched her fry basket up.
“We’re married, we’re supposed to share.”
“Only until you sign those damn papers!”
“Never,” he chuckled. “So when are you free from family and wedding obligations?”
“You are not going to my brother’s wedding, just so we’re clear about this. You are not going,” she stated that firmly. There was a bit of hurt in his heart that she wasn’t even going to offer it as an option, but he was sure that in time he’d win her over. Doing so at her brother’s wedding was likely too much pressure, and would require them explaining that they were married; which he didn’t know if her family would take that well. Going off Lucifer’s reaction he would bet they didn’t even know.
“That’s fine,” he nodded.
“I’m free after the wedding. The wedding is February fourteenth,” she sighed.
“So can I take you for dinner on February fifteenth?” he asked levelly.
“Fine,” she nodded. “But I’m leaving with Garth and Dolphin on the twentieth, we’re meeting up with Vic on a job.”
“Where’s the job?”
“We’re going back to Hawaii to research reefs. Garth’s family is there and they want to be close to his family,” she shrugged.
“I thought he studied whales.”
“Well, he’s a marine biologist, there’s a solid job for him in Hawaii, same for me, and Vic’s already there, so we’re going there. Dolphin also…” she clamped her mouth shut then.
“Also what?”
“She’s pregnant, she wants to be close to his family, but I’m not supposed to tell anyone that!” she muttered.
“Congratulations to Dolphin and Garth.”
“They’re excited, I’m telling my family I’m leaving after the wedding,” she said.
He nodded, he was already trying to calculate if he could afford to head of to Hawaii for a bit to continue wooing his reluctant wife.
“I’m still going to call and text you,” he informed her.
“You don’t have to.”
“We’re friends, it’s about time we act it. And we’re husband and wife.”
“Fine.” She rolled her eyes, and he smiled; this was going to take a lot of work. That was fine by him though.
