Is it a controversial opinion to say I think Near is the biggest chatterbox of all the DN canon brainiacs. In the manga I feel like this boy needs to talk his thoughts and feelings out constantly almost

Can I request headcanons with L, Light and Mello with a s/o who's a genius (like them) but acts stupid (like bimbo-ish) just to annoy people?
Notes: I'm SO sorry I took forever to get this out!
Warnings: n/a just fluff
Characters involved: L, Light, Mello
Gender-neutral reader, you/yours
L
Finds you intriguing.
You're like a puzzle to him. He wants to figure out your motives and understand why anyone would willingly act this way.
It doesn't take him long to understand you're smarter than you let on, however, your reasoning puzzles L a lot.
If you met him during the events of Death Note he immediately decides you're an asset and takes you to his side. You're like the Misa to his Light.
Your job would be to survey Misa, work in the same places as her, join her on any jobs. Since you're good at faking your bimbo personality you easily get along well with her.
At first Light even falls for the guise but with time he realises you're smarter than you look.
Even after Light understands your true personality L still keeps you around to help out. He often takes you with him when he's stalking surveying people and would even ask your opinions on the situation.
At first he used to find you annoying and his opinion of you was very similar to his opinion of Misa. However, with time L starts to find your interactions with others sort of amusing.
He sees your personality as a game, but outside of the Kira case he doesn't really interact with you.
To him, you're just another factor in the case.
Light
Hates it.
Unlike L, Light takes slightly longer to catch on to your personality.
You meet through Misa since you are friends with her. At first, Light presumes you're just like the other girls Misa works with but as time goes on he realises your true potential.
He only gets interested in you once you confess you think he's Kira.
Light's first instinct is to kill you but he refrains from doing so since he thinks he could use you. To him, you're just another pawn he can control to win against L.
L might have some semblance of a bond with you but Light only sees you as an object for his schemes. If he feels that you won't be easily manipulated then he doesn't bother associating with you since you are no use to him.
However, if you are easily swayed his way then Light uses you as an unsuspecting source for information.
With L and the rest of the team constantly hovering over his shoulder Light needed someone on the outside to help him execute his schemes.
Over time he comes to appreciate your wit as it makes it easier to carry out his plans. However, he still expects you to listen to him and hates when you get too creative.
He sometimes wishes you were the one with the Death Note instead of Misa because that would make everything happen so much more smoothly.
He expects you to have your regular personality when interacting with him. If you act like a bimbo when it's just the two of you he gets visibly annoyed.
While you are a genius like him you don't posses the almost inhumane lack of empathy Light is known for, which is why you don't realise the bond you share with him is purely that of a master and his pawn.
Mello
A mixture of the two.
Like L, he finds it weird that you would want to act like a bimbo especially since being a genius is something he always strived for growing up.
To him it's almost like you don't value the skillset his entire life revolves around.
However, he also sees the value in your mannerisms.
Unlike Near, Mello chose to associate himself with the mafia, that meant he needed trustworthy allies who he could rely on to get the work done.
At first he sees you as just another one of the bimbos his men would use as flings and then discard of, but after a few days he realises your true intentions.
You played the role of the innocent girl hopelessly in love with a mafia man yet in reality were using them for your fulfillment. (This can be anything from stealing from the guy you were with to leveraging his connections to complete some personal vendetta.)
Once Mello realises your true persona his first instinct is to get rid of you.
There is only space for one genius in his circle and he can't risk being potentially overthrown.
However, you make him see the value in having you around.
With time, you, Mello, and Matt become a team of sorts. You become a trio known for controlling the mafia groups.
Most people simply presumed you were Mello's bimbo girlfriend he kept around for eye-candy, which made it easy for him to use you to get what he needed.
However, unlike Light, Mello knows the value of having reliable allies (like Matt). He never really places his full trust in you, but with time Mello comes to appreciate you.

Hi hii how was your day or night Going? I wanted to request the death note characters with a gn s/o who that day decided to wear lipstick and take their partners by surprise and gives them quick kisses all over their faces leaving them with lipstick marks and then continues on their way as if nothing had happened. Thank You in advance
Tumblr media
sorry if these were kinda short but i hope this is what you were looking for!
-death note x gn!reader
-light, misa, l lawliet, matt, mello, near, matsuda
༺♡༻
dn characters if you left lipstick marks on their face ❦
light yagami
i feel like he’d be uncharacteristically taken aback by something like this. i hate to say it but he probably would be kind of frustrated at this, when he’s around the task force at least. he just needs his image to be professional and serious. but in private he’d probably find it kind of cute, and if it was before he started working on the kira case.
༺♡༻
misa amane
it goes without saying that she’d live for this. in fact, i think it would be more likely for her to do it to you. but in the situation of you doing this to her, she’d get kind of flustered in an adorable way but be super excitable at the same time. as i kind of said earlier, she’d probably do it back to you as well, and would totally take pictures.
༺♡༻
l lawliet
depends on his mood that day probably. if he’s busy with stuff he might be kind of agitated but you’d most likely know not to disturb him if that was the case. that being said, if he wasn’t busy and he was also in a fun mood i feel like he’d love it. like even around the task force he’d find it adorable. i can’t help but see L as someone who actually loves little cute things like that IM SORRY
༺♡༻
matt
he would 100% love when you do stuff like this. he already thinks you look so cute when you wear lipstick but if you were to do this he’d go crazy fr. he would take tons of selfies with you showing the marks and show EVERYONE lmfaooo
༺♡༻
mello
basically the same to matt. even though he’s high strung and has a short temper, i think he’d find this very cute. he’d like the slightly possessive undertones the most if that makes any sense??? in general, he likes to show you off to the mafia members all the time so this is just another one of those things. essentially, he’d wear those lipstick marks with PRIDE
༺♡༻
near
he’s obviously a very logical and analytical person, so he’d be confused at first. but ultimately he’d be flattered. he’s not used to this kind of thing so he’d try to analyse this action a bit more, even if there isn’t much to analyse, he just doesn’t know this yet.
༺♡༻
matsuda
would be ALL OVER THIS. he’d be soooo flustered and embarrassed but also would be so happy that you’re being so affectionate, and ofc would return this affection. task force would 100% side eye him and he wouldn’t be fazed by any of it he just loves this gesture and doesn’t care about their opinions at this point.

DATE NIGHT
Light
Is pretty open to whatever you want to do. If you ask him to choose, he'll go with the classic dinner at a nice restaurant and maybe go to a museum or something.
He's a very good conversationalist. He loves to learn so he's very easy to talk to; he remembers details.
'Oh, they hate this color, I better pick a different tie.'
If you're doing something fun, he'll have a good time. But he's not a fan of the 'lay around on the couch' kind of dates, they make him feel unproductive.
L
He LOVES the lay around on the couch type of dates. They're a good safe option for him when it's not safe for him to be in public.
When it is safe for him to be in public he's completely shameless. All of his habits and quirks are out on display for the whole world to see and he does not care if he gets judged for it.
So if you can't handle the secondhand embarrassment of your boyfriend having his bare feet out for free, you're going to have a bad time.
If you do go out, he likes quieter, more private dates. A library, a park, places that aren't too crowded or chaotic.
Cafes and bakeries are always a win for obvious reasons.
Misa
She really goes all out. You have to schedule your dates with her, because they can be like 6 hours long.
She's a big fan of classic romantic dates. The 'dinner and a move' kind of thing.
I think she would absolutely love to take you to a masquerade. A chance to experiment with fashion and dance with you all night? She'd be all over it.
She would also like shopping dates. She loves to pick out clothes she thinks would look good on you and will let you pick out things for her too.
Takes lots of cute pictures through the night and displays her favorites in her room.
Mello *NSFW mentioned*
He’ll only go on dates with you on his off time- work always comes first. He has to beat Near by any means necessary, that means his love life comes second to that. In another world where everything was resolved neatly, he would likely be more willing to engage in romance.
Mello loves an adrenaline rush. His favorite dates are always a little risky and you always end up sweaty and out of breath (in a good way.)
I imagine he would like taking you out for drinks and going dancing- probably to raves rather than nightclubs.
The dark is a nice excuse to hold your hand- so you don’t get separated of course.
When you’re so exhausted and dizzy you can’t see straight, he’ll call you both a cab and you’ll do everything short of have sex in the back of it.
The real fun starts when you both get upstairs ;)
Matt
Matt loves relaxed stay-at-home dates. You hop on multiplayer on a really relaxing game like stardew valley or minecraft and just lay in a snuggly pile of blankets together.
I think he would also like dates where you make something together- trying a new recipe, or making an art project. It might not turn out great - he doesn’t have a sophisticated palette or a lot of artistic skill, but he would have a lot of fun.
He doesn’t mind going out once in a while, but he doesn’t like dressing up. He hates wearing ties. He’ll do it occasionally for your sake, but it’s not his favorite.
Near
He doesn’t really do specifically set out *dates*. You both just… end up in each others company.
It’s never a case of ‘Let’s set aside this Saturday at 7 for a date night.’ Usually, you just end up in his room while he’s working, you distract him, and you two end up spending the next six hours talking.
I imagine he would like that type of date, where you sit and have a really, really good conversation for hours and hours.
Especially since you’re one of the only people in the world who can really keep up with him.
He might bring out something for you two to work on together, some of his toys, puzzles, models, etc.
He likes meticulous, detail oriented work. Introduce him to knitting/crochet and you two can sit and knit together for hours. (embroidery would also work for this.)
Matsuda
Silly goofy guy.
He likes new experiences, he’s willing to try just about anything once. So if you have a really wild date idea, he’s probably down with it.
If he’s the one to come up with the date, he tries to put some thought into it and make it personal to you. But he has trouble coming up with new ideas so he tends to stick to what he knows - you two have a dedicated date night restaurant you both like.
I have no idea why, but I imagine he would love live theater? Like specifically musicals. Take him to see Hairspray, he’ll have the time of his life.

death note characters ranked by how much they fuck, from least to most:
L: im sorry but this bitch died a virgin. you know im right. we can talk about lawlight gay sex all we want and its very fun but there is NO way his relationship with light actually went beyond psychosexual mind games that they both found far more sexual than actual sex. he does not leave his weirdass computer floor room he is NOT on tinder. this guy had watari make him a special fleshlight that jacks him off in 3 seconds every time he experiences horniness so he can get back to work
near: same as L, really. the only reason he's ranked higher is because he hangs out with a bunch of sexy americans and could theoretically have had an opportunity at some point
Ide: asexual king. could have sex but simply has no interest in it.
light: divorces his mind from his body to an absolutely insane degree. uses sex purely as a method to give misa rewards for killing a bunch of people. this barely ever happens
misa: only ranked higher than light because i feel like she had sex at least once before meeting light and light was absolutely a virgin at that point
mikami: he has scheduled sex that he pencils into his planner about once every month or so
takada: with how she reacted to light's advances, it's clear that this is not a woman who is accustomed to pleasurable sex. girl go get some better dick its not worth it.
aizawa: on one hand, he is married. on the other hand, between the investigation and having a young child in the house, i doubt they're boning down on the reg
mello: i know people will get mad at me for ranking him this low. because like, look at him. he LOOKS like he FUCKS. but im sorry. he doesnt. he goes after his goals with the singleminded focus of a bear on cocaine presented with a dumpster full of salmon and sex simply does not play into those goals. however he would fuck to FURTHER those goals he just wouldnt even enjoy it because hed be thinking about Beating Near the whole time but like, in a heterosexual way
soichiro and sachiko: you KNOW old man yagami is a freak. that man is not normal and he's gonna dick his wife down crazy style. however he is also working long nights all the time
matsuda: between his need to be around other people and his neglected shelter dog rizz, i think its fair to say matsuda is having a fair amount of sex
matt: to mellos chagrin, matt fucks
mogi: this man is coveted in the tokyo gay scene. dick is bomb AND he makes breakfast in the morning. this man FUCKS but he minds his own business about it

REBIRTH
closed, writing answers
We hit 50 followers. A! Thank you all!!
I picked the title because, well, I'm killing canon to bring it a new life
As promised, here is our event: an ask game where I give canon characters some depth. I'll use the hashtag #death note reborn if you want to look through them all once I've written some! :D
So, pick a character and one of the letters from the list below! I'll run this for about a month? I've never done a writing event before but that seems reasonable :)
 ★━━─・‥…━━━☆
╾PICK A CHARACTER
Anyone goes except Takada, the members of Near's or Mello's team (Matt is fine), Rem, Ryuk, BB, Ide, Mogi and Ukita. i. do not know them enough.
I'll have the most stuff for L, Light, Misa, Matsuda, Matt, Mello, and Near, but anyone not mentioned above is good to ask for!
you can also ask about my OC Rie :>
╾PICK ONE
A: all my thoughts (everything I think about the character, a mix of the below) | L, Aizawa
B: background rewritten (a version of their past with more and/or different details) | Mello
C: change (how do they change, how have they changed, how do they want to change?) | L
D: darkest secrets (what they keep hidden and why) | Soichiro
E: existential crisis (what about existence scares them?) | Matsuda
F: failure (who/what they're afraid of failing)
G: games (do they play card, board or mind games? are they any good?)
H: headcanon list (my top headcanons) | Mello
I: in-depth psychoanalysis (what it sounds like)
J: job (a different career for them)
K: knight in shining armour (what's their role in the mediaeval au, how their character is different) | Mello
L: lei's death note (my headcanons, but those that are present in my au and go against or contradict canon facts)
M: motivation (what's their motivation? what drives them as a person?)
N: number (I list 1 to 10 and something after each; see Matsu's for examples) | Matsuda
O: older (if they lived for another 20 years, what would they be like?) | Mello
P: personality rewritten (turning them from 2D plot devices to 3D characters with emotions + feelings)
Q: question (ask me a specific question)
R: regrets (what do they regret the most about their choices, would they make different ones?) | Light
S: sexuality and gender headcanons (what. what it sounds like.) | L, Light, Mello
T: terrified (what they're afraid of) | L
U: uncertainty (do they ever doubt themselves or their actions? when? why?)
V: versus (I draw them as close to canon as possible, vs. in my style with my headcanons) | Light
W: worldly desires (what do they want in life that's a bit shallow?) | Matt, L
X: x-ray (what goes through their mind?) | Light
Y: you need a diagnosis (what I'd diagnose them with)
Z: zen (what calms them down + makes them happy) | Mello, L
That's it! Send an ask with a character and a letter! Thank you again for all the love and support, my dear followers 💖

Just finished rewatching Death Note, and though it’s completely for my personal pleasure and I would doubt if anyone would read it from start to finish, it’s rant time! *spoilers alert*
First of all, woah. The second watch was truly an experience. Everyone is always talking about ‘I wish I could rewatch … for the first time again.’ and though I’d usually agree, I don’t for Death Note specifically. I don’t really understand why, but in my second watch had a way bigger impact on me than my first. Maybe because I watched it for the first time 4 years ago and I’ve grown now, with different opinions.
ONE THING THAT DIDN’T CHANGE IS MY DISLIKE TOWARDS LIGHT‼️
This being said, the ending where he tried to run away from the police, wounded, made me feel kind of sad for him. He wanted to do good, sure. But after all, anyone who uses bad to solve bad is as bad as the bad they’re trying to solve. Evil cannot be used to fight evil :P
I understand his point of view (somewhat) but I still dislike him. How are you going to watch this man commit genocide, lead his father to his death and feel no remorse, consider killing his sister to save himself (again, no remorse), lead on the angel that is Misa in a cruel way, kill L and Mello (their deaths are enough for me to dislike him but I needed to give more reasons :3) etc etc and still root for him?
Again, no shade to Light lovers. To each their own :P.
Moving on. When I first watched Dn, I was only attached to L. And so, seeing him get killed off and be replaced by Near sparked in me a deep hatred towards that boy. But maturing is realising that Near is the third best character in the show (Right after L and Mello) and that he’s a cutie pie.
And he’s also extremely smart. Correct me if I’m wrong but before L died, he mentionned that if something were to happen to Watari, that he’d erase all the data. That means that Near had none of the informations that L had collected during his investigation.
That also means that he was able to conduct those researches by
1. Not having Light around to examine his attitude or lock him up illegaly
2. No knowledge of what had happened before L’s death
3. He was nowhere near as experienced as L when it came to solving cases (I think…)
He still was able to arrive to the same conclusion as L though, as he mentioned, it wouldn’t have been possible without Mello :)
I also happened to think about Ryuk a lot more and I think he’s the funniest character. My guy dropped his notebook into the human world because he was bored and he landed on a boy who wanted to become God of the new world. And he just went along with it, giggling every now and then. We never truly got a glimpse of his internal monologue, so we don’t know if he agreed with Light or not.
One thing we know, though, is that he sure was amused…
Light is almost as funny. Think about it. If you got a notebook that could kill people, you’d probably get rid of it (I hope so) or AT LEAST ponder on what you would do with it, or if you’d even use it. If you’re a sane human being, your first instinct would be to ‘No way! I could never kill anyone!’.
But Light wasted no time. In only one episode he went from a privileged, smart man to an absolute deranged killer, and that’s hilarious. He didn’t even think about it twice. It’s like he just had a psychotic side to him that just had to wait for the perfect moment to be released.
Also, I knew Matt didn’t have much screen time. But when I rewatched it I noticed that he really DID NOT HAVE ANY! Like they barely add up to thrirty seconds and that sucks cuz he was so cool.
Speaking of cool, MELLO!
He’s so cool like everything about him, his hair his scar HIS STYLE, his aura EVERYTHING. AND I feel like we tend to forget that he is SMART! Like he is smart enough to have been considered a good successor to L and thats crazy to me. It’s sad we didn’t get to fully experience his smartness though.
Same goes for Near. Though it is stated somewhere (I don’t remember where) that he is a little bit smarter than L (but L has a lot more experience, something that cannot be overlooked), I feel like most of the conclusions he’s made appeared from thin air. Did I just not pay attention?
Because at least with L we could see his train of thoughts, his way of thinking and we understood why he came to all those conclusions and decisions.
But with Near it just feels…rushed. (or maybe I js didn’t pay attention…) Like wdym you found that out…It feels like he was more guessing than discovering. Kinda sucks bc he is allegedly smarter than L and I would’ve loved to see it more.
Anyway,
I finished ranting. If you’ve read all this then woah pls get a life (in a nice way <3) .
Death Note amazing anime, amazing openings, amazing aesthetic, amazing characters, AMAZING EVERYTHING‼️

Hello! Can I request wammy men and Light hcs of what they would do when they are jealous?
Jealousy- Wammy guys + light 🎆
hi! sorry this took forever. i've been on vacation and have been really unmotivated so i am very sorry if this sucks <3
Warnings-
Tumblr media
Light Yagami 📓
-light is one of our most jealous on this whole list.
-and he makes it known.
-i mean, he wont SAY anything out loud, but his body language says it all.
-he's tense, arms crossed, scowling at whoever he's upset with
-doesn't take him long to start making excuses to leave. he's hungry, he needs to get home, he doesn't feel good, whatever it takes
-i think it would definitely be one of his biggest flaws
Mello/Mihael Keehl 🍫
-mello is more agressive.
-i think he'd be ready to fight anyone, if needed
-he's also not afraid to insult whoever the person is until they leave. mans will bully the shit out of someone if he's jealous.
-he absolutely makes it obvious. he wants you to see so y'all can leave!
-i think it's one of his flaws, too!
Near/Nate River 🧸
-near will try to hide it, but if it goes on for too long, he gets super clingy and physical
-even though he doesn't get jealous often.
he isn't super into pda until he's jealous.
-then he's not afraid to be all over you.
-he won't say anything, though, just sit there looking tired of that
Matt/Mail Jeevas 🎮
-matt will not outwardly say anything, and like near, he will also get clingy!
-excuses, excuses, excuses. if it gets you out of there he will say it
-but that's only in extreme cases.
-usually he will just stand there holding onto you or leaned against you
-annnnd also just looking like a sad puppy
L Lawliet 🍰
-L is another type to not get jealous that often
-when he does, he doesn't speak, but he just stands there.
-he has a wicked glare he does at the other person
-and will sit there. just sit there until they leave
-but he won't ever ever admit he's upset.

why death note isn't copaganda
Since y'all seem to like my Death Note Metaposting, here's another nugget for you to chew on: I don't think Death Note is copaganda. Either in intent or execution.
I think that Death Note is a story from a very specific time and place, with a very specific target audience. It is a Japanese story from the 2000s, and it's aimed at edgy thirteen-year-old boys.
Japan does not, technically, have a rating system for TV. But most media outlets do choose to self-censor. (To give you an idea of how that looks in practice, I turned to Eirin- the Japanese film ratings board. Eirin splits movies into G, PG-12, R-15, and R-18. Most anime movies are somewhere between PG-12 and R-15. Drug use and abstract supernatural horror tends to get treated much less harshly by Eirin than by the MPAA, but graphic violence, criminal behaviour, and nudity/sex get a much harsher penalty in Japan than they do in the USA.)
A Japanese show for preteen boys in 2005 could not portray the cops as being fundamentally corrupt and violent, any more than an American show for preteen boys could have. So... assuming the writers of Death Note had Some Things To Say about the police, they had to make some choices. They had to figure out how to convey what they wanted to convey- "having the power to kill fucks you up, and cops have that power"- without pissing off their publisher or their TV company.
The easiest way- and the laziest- would have been to make one cop, perhaps Light's Dad, into the Designated Corrupt Punching Bag that the Good Cops have to defeat to catch their criminal. Maybe the Corrupt Punching Bag cop would use a lot of bureaucratic red tape that the Good Guys have to punch through to get their man, or slow down the justice process by insisting on Correct Procedure at all points.
That writing decision positions the failures of the police department as the failure of one man. That writing decision implies that forcing cops to follow the rules that are designed to keep people safe from them actually puts people in danger. I think you could definitely call that writing decision copaganda= and too many shows, on both sides of the ocean, choose it.
But that is not what Death Note chooses to do.
Another way Death Note could have handled the problem is to just... sidestep it. Completely take the focus off of the police, throw in a line about how they're baffled, and let our Genius Detective Hero-Antagonists handle the case completely. In this version of Death Note, we'd have no Aizawa or Matsuda, Soichiro would just be Light's father, and L/Mello/Near would be the only ones pursuing the investigation.
This writing decision positions the police as irrelevant in a way that means you don't have to think about them. The Police Are Baffled, and that's all you need to know; they've handed the case off, and the story goes into the realm of The Outsider Boy Detective Story. This isn't copaganda, per se; it acknowledges that the police are a flawed force that can need outside help... but it's not engaging with the social issues that make the police genuinely flawed. It's veering into pure fantasy. And that can be a valid decision...
But that is not what Death Note chooses to do.
Death Note chooses to actively present the police as being good, but deeply flawed people... who, because of the system they operate in, have no choice but to become bad people. The cops we get to know are kind, funny, ordinary people. But for one reason or another, they don't notice the monster in their midst, until it's too late. And Light's influence corrupts them- or forces them out.
I'll admit that I'm going off my interpretation of the anime here, which does make some significant changes from the manga, but considering that the big change to the ending that the anime makes from the manga is continued into every future adaptation? I feel comfortable including it in my analysis.
[oh, and, uh, spoilers for the end of Death Note, obvs.]
Soichiro refuses to believe that his son could be a criminal. He knows Light's a smart cookie, and he trusts Light's sense of justice. He comes to treat Light as something of a superior officer, even though Light is his teenage son. ...And Light repays him by sending him off on a suicide mission. I mentioned this on a reblog of the original post, but when Soichiro gets his hands on the Death Note? He dehumanizes the criminals he's been sent to kill, the other members of his squad, and ultimately, himself. He treats everyone like they're an expendable cog in a big machine. No one is a person; everything is something to be used in pursuit of Justice. And unlike Light, Soichiro includes himself in that. Soichiro falls into the ultimate trap of being a Good Cop. If you fight for justice as a cop, you wind up utterly expendable. If you're a Good Cop, you die, on command, and take as many people with you as your overlords see fit.
Matsuda also looks up to Light, though for slightly better reasons; they did more or less join the force around the same time, if you count Light joining the Kira Investigation as Light becoming a cop. Matsuda implicitly trusts Light, especially by the start of Season 2. He sees himself as naiive, weak, careless, and stupid- even though he's actually really good at his job. Matsuda is sympathetic to Kira, but thinks he's going about things the wrong way, and that surely there's got to be a better way to make a better world? ....And then Matsuda discovers that everything he thought he knew was wrong. That Light is Kira, and always was. That Kira wasn't a good guy doing things the wrong way, that he was callously manipulating the entire task force this entire time, and that Matsuda has been his patsy. And Matsuda goes out swinging. Matsuda shoots Kira. And hits. More than once. If Ryuk hadn't decided to put Light out of his misery, it would be Matsuda's fault that Light died without real justice being done. If Soichiro is what happens to you when you're a Good Cop, then Matsuda shows how a Good Cop can become a Bad Cop. A moment of anger at the wrong time, a realization that you've been living a lie, or a criminal the cop cannot see as a person anymore? He uses the power of life and death. The power that the viewer has just been told is murder. Only instead of coming from the inkwell of a pen, it's from the barrel of a gun.
Aizawa is... interesting. I'll admit, I remembered him as being The Cop Who Leaves, and that coloured my interpretation until I went back to check the wiki. It turns out he left and came back- what I remembered as "Aizawa working as a private investigator" was Aizawa working well within the bounds of the Kira investigation, but going behind Light's back to talk to Near. But I do think it's significant that Aizawa, more than anyone else in the Kira investigation, is the one who's able to leave. When the Kira investigation gets defunded by the Japanese government, it's Aizawa who can walk- who feels like he has the duty to walk, because he has something to live for that's more important than Justice. Catching Kira is less important than making sure his wife and kid don't starve, after all. He moves to a different part of the police force, and considers leaving the force altogether. And even after he's come back to the Kira investigation, he's detached enough from it that he can see Light's transparent bullshit for what it is. Aizawa is the Good Cop. He follows procedure when he can; when he can't- because the investigation is too corrupt, mostly- he still tries to do what would make the world a better place for everyone. He isn't violent; he isn't cruel; he isn't into justice as retribution. FFS, Aizawa tries to hold back Matsuda from shooting Light. The writers have said that if more people were like Aizawa, the world would be a better place.... And Aizawa is the guy who can leave. Who does leave. Whose loyalty is to his family and his own morals, not to the police as an agency, not to his comrades on the force, not to the thin blue line.
A couple of people have pointed out to me that in Death Note How To Read 13, the writers have said that they didn't have a theme they were going for. And honestly, that'd explain some of the hiccups with the writing.
But I can't help but feel like, even if it's unintentional, the way that the major cop characters' arcs play out is a very well structured critique of some common copaganda tropes.
I think that Death Note is only copaganda if you define "copaganda" as "there is a cop character who is sympathetic" without interrogating what the show is saying with its cops beyond that. And considering that Death Note is a show written for tweens, in a country where respect for authority is paramount? I think that the show's done as much as you can reasonably expect it to to subvert Being Copaganda.
(If anyone wants to say that the Autistic Detective Crew is somehow copaganda, a) I have another essay locked and loaded, do not test me, the short version of which is b) there are two genres of detective fiction, and the one that L/Mello/Near are part of is not part of the tradition that gave us copaganda, it's the other one.)

Death Note boys with a pessimist s/o
Light, Mello, Matt, Near, and L
Light Yagami 🖤
You are the reason he does what he does
He wants you happy
If you met before he became 'Kira' he wanted to change the word for you, aw right? Until he goes insane (keep him the way he was before please I miss Light)
If he met you post Kira he'd manipulate you into being his "lamb"
Ohhhhh~ but telling you about the death note if you were on board he'd let you help
But if not...he'd manipulate you, bro don't let him.
Mello🍫
He is too
If you want to talk about how fucked the world is with him he'd be down
Also would make bets about terrible things happening (you'd win)
I don't know what else to really write
Matt🎮
This poor boy would say stuff like
"we can play video games together instead of thinking about sad stuff!"
(PLEASE PROTECT HIM)
He'd hug you kiss you do anything for you
He just wants you to be happy
AFFECTION ON BAD DAYS!!
Near🧩
He'd agree (idunnoalotaboutthisboyhelp)
L🍰
"do you want cake?"
L would just talk about depressing stuff, trying to make you feel better but it just makes it worse
I dunno what this was I'm high rn sooooo~~~~ ALSO TAKING REQUESTS

Note
Hello, new Death Note fan here. First, thanks so much for this blog of yours. Because it came out 10+ years ago, I'm afraid will hard to find any active DN acc until I came to your blog. I understand more about Death Note's characters and story thanks to you...💐
I just start DN anime and manga last year (I know it's so late), because many people said in reviews that DN is not that good and mostly overrated. After finishing it, I think, how wrong that opinion was....
Do you mind if I ask some questions :
- Is Beyond Birthday became like that because of A's suicide?
- I read somewhere that Death Note (especially L and Light's relationship) is subtext mlm like Hannibal NBC & Merlin BBC, do you agree?
- One of my friend is DN fan since 2008, and every time she watched (more than 100x) L's death, she still cried. And coping it with read L/Light fics, are you like that too?
- "L and Light are both ace and aromantic", do you agree?
- Until the end, does L figure out it was Light = Kira the whole time?
- If Mello and Near work together from the start, can Light got captured more early?
- If Light were female, do you think L/Light ship will be more common?
- Until now, have you found any couple (canon or non canon) from any media (books, tv series, movies, anime/manga, etc) that the dynamics remind you of L/Light?
- "If Ryuk were an ikemen, than Light/Ryuk ship will be more popular than Light/L", do you agree?
- Do you prefer L as top or bottom or switch with Light? Why?
- In what moments that you start ship Light with L?
Sorry for my long ask (got too excited) feel free to answer whichever you want to. Thanks @13eyond13 ....
Hi! Aw, thanks for the kind words, and I'm so glad my blog is still helping new fans out that way somehow! 😊
Let me try to quickly answer your questions here (sorry if the answers aren't very in-depth, I don't have a computer with me currently and I'm just replying to you with my phone)
- Did Beyond Birthday become like that because of A's suicide?
This is not something that is commented on directly in the novel, so it's up to fan interpretation and headcanons for that! There is only one sentence about A, and we actually don't even know if A and B knew each other or interacted with each other in any way:
Tumblr media
Personally I DO think it's fun to imagine it's part of B's past that he and A did know each other and that it did affect him somehow, but I'm not sure if his character was actually written with that notion in mind.
- I read somewhere that Death Note (especially L and Light's relationship) is subtext mlm like Hannibal NBC & Merlin BBC, do you agree?
I think you can definitely easily read homoerotic subtext into their relationship, but I also believe most of it was not really intentionally put there by the manga creators Ohba and Obata. I think SOMETIMES there were deliberate suggestive jokes and whatnot in the manga that indicated there was some level of awareness that things between them could be seen as suggestive – like when Matsuda is questioning them only sharing their cell phone numbers with each other, and when Misa questions L's orientation whenever he handcuffs himself to Light. That doesn't mean that reading them or their relationship in a shippy way isn't valid or legitimate or interesting to do! Just that I dont think it was written with the writer knowingly going into things like "ohoho time to slyly queerbait the audience!" or something. I think Hannibal's creators were extremely deliberate with everything homoerotic that goes on between Will and Hannibal for example, but I think it happened a bit more unintentionally in Death Note originally.
- One of my friend is DN fan since 2008, and every time she watched (more than 100x)  L's death, she still cried. And coping it with read L/Light fics, are you like that too?
Haha oh wow 100x! I'm not like that personally because I had L's death spoiled for me by a comment I saw on the very first episode of the anime, so I knew it was coming! I was still really upset about it of course, he IS my fave. But actually Light's death in the anime gets a stronger emotional reaction from me than L's. I think I only ever cried during Death Note at that part where Light is thinking about his younger innocent self while he's wounded and running away, something about it gets me every time... And yes, I definitely wanted to read a lot of fics to resolve all my messy feelings about the two of them afterwards!
- "L and Light are both ace and aromantic", do you agree?
I can see why people might see them that way, though it's not my personal headcanon for them! It's one of those things people can decide for themselves rather than something I think there is an objectively "correct" answer about, really.
- Until the end, does L figure out it was Light  = Kira the whole time?
I'm not 100% sure if I'm understanding your question correctly. But I think L is always something like "PRETTY DARN SURE" Light is Kira, though he also knows he needs to have the concrete proof to back that certainty of his up. He DOES know it without a doubt once he actually has his heart attack and sees the look on Light's face in the manga, though! He thinks something like "I knew it! I wasn't wrong..." before his eyes close. Which in some way is maybe a small comfort, to know that he was able to solve this ultimate mystery for himself and know he was definitely correct about it before he died.
- If Mello and Near had worked together from the start, could Light have been captured more early?
A very good question! I unfortunately feel a bit too rusty on my successor arc plot stuff to know how to answer this one well, but I do think that Near and Mello made a very effective team whenever they collaborated, for sure.
- If Light were female, do you think L/Light ship will be more common?
I don't know if it would be more COMMON necessarily, but perhaps it would just have a slightly different sort of fanbase and legacy as a ship? I think a lot of people kinda like, and have always liked, how gay it is though? and I don't know if that really hurt the ship's popularity so much as maybe increased it even. But I'm definitely not an expert on this stuff or anything, hahaha
- Until now, have you found any couple (canon or non canon) from any media (books, tv series, movies, anime/manga, etc) that the dynamics remind you of L/Light?
Not exactly like it, no! It's quite unique to me in many ways. MAYBE the closest thing I can think of right now is NBC Hannibal, simply because of the unresolved tension and morbid dark humour and constant innuendo and cop/criminal investigative sort of stuff going on between them? But I think canon Hannigram was darker in some ways than I find canon Lawlight to be, and the parallels aren't exact by any means...
- "If Ryuk were an ikemen, than Light/Ryuk ship will be more popular than Light/L", do you agree?
Hahaha, I feel like it would be more popular as a ship than it currently is, but I'm not sure it would eclipse Lawlight! I feel it's hard to beat the antagonistic chemistry L and Light have simply due to how their roles are set up in the story as the detective and the criminal and whatnot.
- Do you prefer L as top or bottom or switch with Light? Why?
I prefer it when they take turns in fics and don't stick rigidly to one thing or the other! I think maybe because it seems realistic to me that they'd want to experiment that way with each other, and also because I just find it more interesting to read smut if they're doing stuff in a variety of ways.
- In what moments that you start ship Light with L?
I think I basically immediately felt a strong tension and chemistry between them. But I was introduced to things via the anime, and the rain scene definitely seemed extremely shippy to me and like "there's no way they weren't into each other" hahah. I think the rain scene was the main reason I went looking for shippy content about them afterwards. But I find that the manga is actually shippier to me than the anime sometimes, even though that rain scene isn't in it. Maybe because to me it feels a bit more like they're mentally and emotionally on the same page about things more often in the manga, and both seem pretty aware of the sly mind games they're playing with each other the whole time. And Light stays very fixated on and oddly reverent towards L after his death in the manga as well, which ultimately remains probably the shippiest thing about them in canon to me...

Hi!<3 May I request Mello Matt, L, Near and Light hcs of how they would be if their s/o nearly died?
Notes: plz I love writing death note hcs
Warnings: near-death situations, slight yandere themes
Characters involved: Light Yagami, L Lawliet, Near, Mello, Matt
Gender-neutral reader, you/yours
Light Yagami
Regardless of what happened to you, Light will presume this is because of people who are trying to hurt him through you.
Being Kira's s/o is obviously a dangerous position, and he heavily chastises himself for not thinking of his status impacting you before.
This is obviously not completely true, as what happened was a mere accident and had nothing to do with you being his partner.
If another person was involved in the accident then they will definitely be killed using the death note, this is non-negotiable and Light will probably hide their death from you.
He starts keeping a close eye on everything you do and will not let you go places without him for a while. Even after that Light often sends Ryuk to watch over you when he's executing his plans to ensure you don't get caught in it.
Overall, he takes this incident as a challenge to try and prove that he can be Kira and have a partner without it ending in a tragical romance.
L Lawliet
L definitely isn't as crazed Light but he is very cautious because of the incident.
He considers himself foolish for not thinking about such a thing happening before and does get very panicked at the thought of possibly losing you.
Unlike Light who's accustomed to caring for others, his family, and having important people in his life, L has never really had to worry about anyone except himself and Watari, which is why this incident sort of shocks him into realising you are now part of that list too.
He won't be overbearing physically, but he will insist upon having surveillance for some time or at least sending Watari with you.
If you protest then he pretends to understand and agree not to do it, but he still will survey you anyways.
L will get used to the idea of having to look out for you pretty easily, as he also considers the fact that in the future if your relationship ever goes public people might try to use you to get to him.
Overall, he probably seems like the calmest out of them all but he's really spiralling mentally and feels a need to constantly have you around after that.
Mello
The angry kind.
He probably yells at you after the incident and calls you an idiot, but it's really just his way of showing you he cares (that doesn't excuse the fact that he's being toxic).
He'll get overbearing but unlike the others, he doesn't give you a chance. Mello can and will force you into accepting his sudden surveillance and has the connections to ensure you are always watched by someone he trusts if he isn't available.
The two of you probably fight about it quite a bit and Mello starts yelling and has to force himself to understand the fact that just because he cares about you doesn't make this okay.
He's never really had to care about someone so much before, sure he has Matt but he's never cared to this extent, which is why Mello just gets very panicked and doesn't know what to do with himself.
With Mello, conversation is key in this situation.
If you fight fire with fire it might just result in things getting worse and him going Yandere.
Near
Blames himself.
To Near, it's all but insulting you were even put in such a situation. He thinks that it's his fault for not seeing this possibility before.
If he was there to witness the situation his guilt and decision to blame himself only gets worse to the point where he thinks he needs to take extra measures to make up for his previous shortcomings.
He wouldn't force surveillance on you or anything but he might get a little overbearing because he doesn't want you to go places without him or be out of his sight.
Unlike the others Near is open to an argument in fact he wants you to argue back, wants you to knock him out of his self-blaming spiral.
He isn't very familiar with human emotion and doesn't really know how to comprehend what he feels for you and how the thought of you feeling pain affects him so badly.
Just like Mello he just needs to understand this new feeling and how to cope with it healthily.
Matt
Matt is the calmest of them all, and unlike L he's not faking it.
Sure, he's scared shitless. If anything this incident just shows him how careful he needs to be about mixing you and his work since the possibility of you getting hurt is very real.
He doesn't want to risk losing you and isn't very happy about the fact that you could have been taken from him.
Normally, Matt isn't very physically affectionate but now he's holding you in his arms for hours on end convincing himself that nothing happened, that you're fine.
It would be cute if he didn't talk about keeping you with him and only him while you were in his arms.
Very yandere thoughts but unlike the others he doesn't do anything about it.
Well, he doesn't kidnap you. But he does set up a camera outside your house and a tracker in your car. Mello told him to do this before anyways (just in case you were a mole) so that's just more of a reason for Matt to keep an eye on you.
He doesn't tell you any of this, and you will probably never find out since Matt's good at what he does and know how to ensure his targets don't know they're being watched.

definitely self projecting but wammy boys + light or matsuda during their [b4 transtion] ftm boyfriend's period? like they try to help with the mood swings and dysphoria?
Tumblr media
self projecting is my middle name no worries
sorry if a lot of these sounded similar i guess i just thought a lot of them would work in the same way
death note x m!reader
-mello, matt, near, l lawliet, light, matsuda
༺♡༻
dn boys helping trans boyfriend with dysphoria due to period ❦
mello
-i imagine him to be a very passionate person in relationships in general. so i think he is really going to do his best to empathise with you and genuinely reassure you that you’re valid no matter what. i also think he’d have a kind of tough love approach in general, not just here, so i think he’d be kind of blunt in reassuring you. however, if you are sensitive and emotional in the moment he’d learn to be more delicate with your feelings. side note : this is one of the only times he’d ever share his chocolate with someone lmao. this might come off rly stupid but it shows u how much he genuinely cares about making u feel better bc he’d do this for NO ONE
༺♡༻
matt
-he would remind you that this doesn’t define you and be very reassuring for a bit, but he’d try to take your mind off of it as well as possible. he’d get you anything you needed and then drop whatever he was doing to cuddle and watch a movie with you. he’d buy tons of snacks and just hold you for a while making sure you were comfortable and that you felt safe.
༺♡༻
near
-would maybe see it too logically instead of understanding your emotions more but he would still be very kind and understanding. he would get you whatever you said you needed and just make sure to stay close to you. he’d just sit next to you and stroke your hair, asking you very often if you needed anything.
༺♡༻
l lawliet
-giving you all of his snacks, sweets, cakes, you name it. he’d stay very close to you and be very physically affectionate, similar to near. if you needed time alone, that’s fine. as soon as you go back and ask him to stay with you, he’s right there. he’d probably drop all his work to make sure he was there for you
༺♡༻
light
-he’d probably ask you some questions about it and what causes you to feel the way you do. he’s very intelligent so he’d want to get to the very roots of the problem and help you through every step of it all. he would talk about the topic with you in detail to understand and then fully reassure you that you’re valid no matter what is going on
༺♡༻
matsuda
-probably just going to squeeze you so tight and not let you go. he will be very sweet in how he goes about comforting you, being very delicate around your feelings. he’d feel very appreciative knowing you opened up to him about it, as he gets how hard it must be. so he does everything he can to make sure you feel better. he would stick with you through it all

evan please i need to know whether all the dn blorbos wear boxers or briefs
thank you for asking. i feel that this is very important information and as such i have been contemplating my answers
L: i'm inclined to say boxer briefs bc i don't think he would like the tightness of briefs, but i also think sensory-wise it would drive him insane having his boxers ride up in his jeans. he likes a nice relaxed boxer brief, methinks
light: briefs all the way. he thinks boxers are for slobs, briefs are for put-together Adults (or at least teenagers who cosplay as them). he has exactly 3 colors of the same brand of briefs and meticulously folds and organizes them in his dresser by color, if you even care
mello: i also think mello would prefer boxer briefs. boxers are a little too sloppy for him and briefs aren't really his style. happy medium (edit: i just realized that he would also Need briefs to wear with those tight ass leather pants. he wouldn’t be caught dead w his underwear showing thru them)
matt: boxers 100%. that man prioritizes comfort and he fully gets ones with flames and kissy marks and those ones with really stupid sayings or completely random prints. it drives mello insane. alternatively, when he's feeling particularly unhinged or simply forgot to do laundry, he goes commando
near: briefs. he Hates wearing anything with the potential to ride up under his pants. evil stim. he likes to get a size larger than necessary tho so they're a little loose and comfy
mikami: boxer briefs. boxers are Far too casual for him and can show through slacks too easily. but he fears briefs are too... fruity. again, happy medium
gevanni (bc i love him): briefs. my lil faggy gay boy. boxers are not his style and he is not concerned with appearing overly masculine

Why do you think Matsuda was grinning when he offered to make the eye deal in Death Note? For that matter, what do you think would have happened if he had? How could it happen? What would happen differently if Matsuda died and Soichiro lived? Honestly, I just really want to know about this AU, and you seem like the fandom Matsuda expert!
hehehe i LOVE this question!!!
matsuda is someone who desperately wants to be useful. far from this being something he learns to deal with through the series, it's a need that gets exacerbated as the story goes on. he has a deep-seated anxiety about being useless, and this fuels a lot of his actions. theres a reason his Yotsuba Shenanigans were prompted by him being brushed off repeatedly by L and told to just do menial tasks. he wants to be important to the investigation, and at first, he's just kinda stupid about it — willing to put himself in danger to be useful, but it seems more like just recklessness than deliberate self-sacrifice. like he doesn't really understand the stakes
this...changes, after the timeskip. matsuda still gladly puts himself in danger, but there's a tint of desperation to it. like he better understands the danger, but that doesn't change anything. one standout example is when matsuda tells soichiro to tell mello that matsuda is L — it's very clear that this puts matsuda in massive danger, but he does it anyway. and, crucially, soichiro goes along with it. there's a new degree of trust there — the task force knows now that matsuda is gonna pull this shit and there's nothing they can do to stop him. and of course light picks up on it.
like, the thing about matsuda volunteering to take the eyes is that it's not an out of nowhere thing like the Yotsuba Shenanigans were. light was surprised by that. but five years later, he knows matsuda a lot better — enough to know he'll volunteer to take the eyes.
venturing into the realm of conjecture and hc, i think there's a few things going on here. i think that matsuda is someone who really keenly feels the danger they're in, and is most afraid when he's helpless. to him, that fear goes away when he's Doing Something About It. and i think this meshes well with my h/c that matsuda was on a riot unit prior to the NPA. while everyone else is a thinker and investigator, matsuda is a doer. he feels a lot of anxiety when he's just sitting around, and feels useless because he's not much help in the more cerebral parts of the investigation. but then something Must Be Done and Action Must Be Taken, and matsuda is in his element — he doesn't hesitate to come forward, and feels a rush of relief as he finally has some degree of control over the situation. so i kinda read his happiness as him finally having a way he can be useful and something he can do to catch kira.
as for what would have happened if he did take the eyes...well, it's not a happy story, and there's a damn good reason that light planned for him to take them. matsuda absolutely would have killed mello. wouldn't have even let him open his mouth. he doesn't have the same hangups around the death note that soichiro does — hell, after the chief's death, he was willing to let near use the death note to kill mello, though it's hard to know just how much of that was motivated by mello basically killing soichiro. light would have then used matsuda to prove the 13-day rule by killing him after he didn't write any names for 13 days. it would have been SO easy to convince matsuda's self-sacrificing ass that it was better for him to die than to live by killing criminals with the death note or something.
....though, well, there is a chance that, riding the high of the raid, light would have taken a risk. after all, he already thought matsuda understood him, and matsuda killing mello would only prove that further. why not have matsuda kill a death row criminal every 13 days? why not eventually escalate it to matsuda killing an escaped death row criminal? you see where i'm going with this. it would be a crack to open up, to start to let kira's ideology infiltrate the task force.
that could potentially work if soichiro died — it's pretty heavily implied that he would have only lived a few days after the raid if he didn't take the eyes anyway. but if soichiro lived, i don't think matsuda could have been convinced to use the death note after the raid, even to save his own life. matsuda's moral compass for much of the series is the chief, after all
