Cod Grian Cosplay Build!

The fish man himself, season 10 Grian!

Reference Sketch

Some notes:

I always end up changing somethings from the reference when making the actual outfit, although I stayed pretty close it it this time.

I initially drew him with a handlebar mustache and goatee to mimic the whiskers of a fish, however I switched to a fluffier mustache beard to match the guy from Frozen.

I also opted for my turtleneck shirt over the red sweater+collar to go for more of a fisherman vibe

Since Grian is usually drawn with parrot wings, I wanted to call back to that with red yellow and blue feathers on the bobbers.

The tail and fins

I wanted to lean into the “fish”er man design and gave him fish fins and a tail.

It’s design is based on a cod fish with striped fins based on the feathers of an osprey

To make it, I drew the tail pattern on a large piece of paper, cut it out, cut each section out of the respective fabric times two, sewed the two sides together, and lastly filled it with a ton stuffing.

The tail is heavy, but it’s fun to wack people with it.

The fins for the arms and beanie are made in a similar way, each hand sewn onto the beanie/bracers once stuffed.

The Overalls

I had originally planned for him to be wearing waders, but wanted to make the outfit more wearable for everyday wear without overheating. So I opted for some brown corduroy overalls instead.

To add a “wet” look to each pant leg, I briefly dipped each one into some black fabric dye before rinsing and drying.

The green pixels on his skin look like they could be kelp or patches so I decided to go with the latter and dug through my scrap fabric to find these green pieces.

I embroidered the edge of each piece with a unique stitch and placed them randomly on each leg.

The snails!

Of course we can’t forget about the snails

There are three snails for this project with two more eventually on the way (a plush pink snail, and a plush brown snail).

I made the clay blue snail first with polymer and attached tie tacks to the underside so I can use it like a pin and stick it anywhere on my clothes.

Same goes for the pink worm snail which is also made of clay.

The blue plush snail is based on a pattern from Etsy by willowynn with some slight modifications, mainly to the eyes/feelers, and doubling the size.

Facial hair

This was one of the parts I was the most excited about for this cosplay and the only part I didn’t do myself. I commissioned @basic-amoeba to make a custom ventilated beard, styled and everything. This part turned out so good!

Some final notes for this project

This cosplay took from Feb 20 to March 15th to complete since I was so determined to finish it before Grian changed his skin. Haha look at me now. He still hasn’t changed it.

Not pictured (cause why can I only add 10 photos 😭) is the mending book with a fish hook I made using scrap faux leather, cardboard, and some cut printer paper. I painted in galactic the word mending and sprayed the whole thing in my “enchanting” spray paint (a blue to purple iridescent glitter spray paint)

A small fun backstory to the fishing rod:

My grandpa is an experienced fisherman and has dozens of fishing poles. When I talked about this project with him, he brought me out to his workshop and pulled down the dustiest fishing rod there. He told me he had fished this fishing rod from a lake one day with the line and bait still attached. Can’t get anymore accurate to Minecraft fishing than that lol.

On Dieter, Goya's Black Paintings, and Pedro on Talk Art 

Alright y'all, it's Saturday evening, I have nothing better to do (I actually do but I don't feel like it), so welcome to my mini TED Talk about 'how to pay too much fucking attention to the Pedro cinematic universe'. None of this is new, and maybe everybody already knew about this, but I didn't... so here's a nerdy tangent courtesy of googling/wikipedia-ing.

I was reading a Dieter!fic (this one right here by @chaoticgeminate - go read her writing!) earlier today, which refers to the 'Saturn Devouring His Son' painting - that giant mural Dieter is working on in The Bubble:

The original 'Saturn' by Goya

The fic mentioned its part of 'The Black Paintings', so I got curious and started googling. I'm no art major or expert, so please allow me to just paraphraze the Wikipedia page. 'Saturn' is part of a group of 14 Goya paintings that are called Pinturas Negras/The Black Paintings. They "portray intense, haunting themes, reflective of both his fear of insanity and his bleak outlook on humanity" --this was late in Goya's life, and was connected to several illnesses he had experienced (and the fear of relapsing) and political turmoil in Spain at the time (post-Napolean war, changing Spanish government, etc.

Trivia fact 1: Goya actually made these paintings right on the walls of the Quinta del Sordo (so-called Deaf Man's villa) where he was staying -- so I love that Apatow had Dieter also paint right on the walls.

Trivia fact 2: while Goya was living in this villa, he actually became gravely ill (again) - not by a pandemic obviously, but it's hard to not link that loosely to the COVID period. He had never intended for these 'Black Paintings' to become public; "these paintings are as close to being hermetically private as any that have ever been produced in the history of Western art" (the murals were eventually transfered to canvas by other folks once he had moved out of the villa). Switching back to The Bubble -- I love how the tragic influence of Goya's illness(es) and art/things 'made at home away from the world, not intended for an audience' (so obviously, in a bubble) has that connection to the COVID experience and how many folks were suddenly homebound, along with the burden of illness in many ways (lord knows this all did a serious number on our mental health). In the movie, Dieter and the others do not want to go into isolation again, but that solitude is what eventually led him to painting on the walls in his room. This is not a 'grand discovery' of any kind, but I got a kick out of the parellels once I read up on it - and honestly makes me appreciate the movie a bit more, haha.

Not happy about another quarantine period.

Alright, more hyperfocusing after the cut:

Some googling led me to a post from last year by @nicolethered (gifs in this post are hers), and she included screencaps of the walls of Dieter's room (during that drug scene), which I hadn't even noticed while watching the movie. Upon taking a closer look, I noticed they're outtakes from other pieces of Goya's Black Paintings! I thought that was really cool, they sure worked on the details with that set (there's one more that's shown in a different shot but I can't exactly figure out which outtake that is):

First one is a mirror image from Two Old Men Eating Soup and the second one is basically Satan aka 'The Great He-Goat' from the Witches' Sabbath painting. Which IMO makes for fucking hilarious perfection a.k.a. trivia fact 3 -- because we all know about Dieter and his little emotional support goat, LOL. Excellent connection.

Anywaaay there's more. The Bubble was shot during Feb 22, 2021 to April 16, 2021, right? Pedro has spoken about how his input in shaping Dieter was mostly regarding his outfits (the Crocs, the robe, etc). But then I suddenly remember the Talk Art interview he had done in 2018, and how he namechecks 'The Dog' by Goya - and lo, guess which painting is actually part of the 14 Black Paintings? Yeap - the dog! So I checked the podcast and he was asked, 'if you could be any painting, what painting would you be?' by Russell. Here is the painting, and below it is what he said on Talk Art:

'The Drowning Dog' by Goya

"I think… it's a Goya. Yeah, old school. I think it's called 'Dog Buried in Sand' or something like that. It's so… I remember feeling it was such a visual representation of helplessness, in such a… come on, let's all admit that helplessness is a very recurring feeling for many of us, you know what I mean? When it comes to so many things. I guess… I was in Spain, in Madrid, and I was 20. And I went to the Goya museum. What's interesting about it is that the head of the dog is really quite small and sort of adorable, it looks like a stray mutt, and the painting - if I can remember it correctly - is very rectangular. There's so much above him, like the world just seems so big. It's quite incredible, isn't it? I know it's really sad, and sort of dark, and maybe I really like enjoy perceiving myself like..." (He gets interrupted by Russell, and then continues;) "Yeah, he's certainly not dying, it's sort of - it's a moment", (then interrupts himself with;) "Maybe he's totally dying, there's no way that dog is getting out of that. That dog is SO fucked. Anyway, that's the painting that represents my life". (All three of them burst out into laughing.)

If you're still reading this - I am impressed with your dedication to my silly little post, haha. Anyway, I just thought it was so striking that there basically is a straight line from the painting he mentioned in Talk Art to what Dieter is painting in the Bubble. Makes me wonder if perhaps he - or even Russell/Robert - had any input in that part of Dieter's backstory.

Hey, I want to start by saying that I love everything about your writing so much!

I just read your Fanfic Author Ask Meme reply where you said you gave yourself mild tendinitis in Feb. If you’ll permit me, I’d like to gently shake you by the shoulders and say: Please take care of yourself!

As someone who drew so much for their degree that they gave themselves carpal tunnel (which then developed into chronic pain that’s 5 years strong and counting) I totally get the enthusiasm to create. I hope it was enthusiasm that caused it and not any pressure you may feel by our enthusiasm for your work.

Either way, I just wanted to say that I bet everyone would be cool with you taking your time with writing if it meant that you weren’t hurting yourself. I love reading your work, but I’d hate for you to injure yourself and get to the point where you still have the enthusiasm but aren’t able to act on it. Enthusiasm is great and beautiful but sometimes one needs to be reminded that slowing down isn’t necessarily a bad thing when it comes to creating, if that makes sense? I’m not too sure if I’m accurately conveying my thoughts or feelings on the matter. I guess I just wanted to make sure you’re taking care of yourself.

I’m gonna stop lecturing you now, just let me climb down off my soap box and take a few deep breaths. Sorry for shaking you; hearing about creative injuries just flips a switch in my brain 😅

Aw, haha, I really appreciate your concern! And I'm very sorry that that happened to you as well. Let me assuage at least this particular instance a little bit!

This isn't a totally new tendonitis for me: the usual main exacerbating factor is not actually keyboard typing but being on my phone way too much, and when it comes around, I switch to using a stylus, which helps a lot.

I've slowed down quite a bit and it's not currently bothering me!

My writing "too much" is one of those things that is totally internally motivated: I don't feel outside pressure to do it, I was very much just riding the most intense phase of a hyperfixation. It's not a normal behavior for me, haha, and it's not actually possible for me to write that much most of the time unless I have that time off as I did on this occasion. So! Forced limits, haha.

I wrote 80k words in three weeks, which is pretty fucking insane, and even as much as I'm still writing now, it's notably less than that and isn't causing any physical issues!

When I realized it was happening because of the typing and not the phone thing this time, I took measures to tone things back. I've gotten overenthusiastic in ways that caused longer-term injuries before and am not interested in a repeat, haha.

That said, doctors (and those soon to be, in my case) are absolutely known to be the worst patients, hahaha. I fully acknowledge that I have a high pain tolerance and am a person who walked on a broken foot for a full week because it wasn't "that bad" until my mom made me go to the ED. I'm usually better at judging my own health based on objective signs rather than how bad something hurts, but sometimes I do slip, and "in the throes of creative fury" is definitely one of those moments where I can be prone to it.

So thank you for your kind words! They're important ones to live by! We only get one body: it's imperative to treasure it, and not to do anything to it now that's going to make us irreperably miserable later.

Well, for once I was actually not writing or watching anything but I *was* going over my notes for that multi chapter I've been planning since May and just told you about. I finally decided to choose the more painful route (yo welcome!), so normal stuff. Wait, does that also count as writing? Either way, I'm sorry for my late replies last night haha. so my brain juices got churning around — what do heats for purebred omegas look like with a purebred alpha? since their instincts are stronger and they’re more prone to those hormones, does it last longer/shorter? do they have a harder time recovering? is that when accidents are more likely to happen (like mentioned in previous chapters)?

a little bit of a question dump but crcb got me back into the omegaverse as a whole. it’s one of the best-written fics i’ve seen that don’t reduce characters to mindless dom/sub creatures.

As far as what it would look like for a purebred omega to spend a heat with a purebred alpha...a lot of it would be the same. It wouldn't have much of an effect on the length or severity of the heat since that's just sort of dependent on the omega. An alphas presence/mood could have a bit of an effect on it, but that's more likely to be if there was a threat or a situation happening that angers or makes the alpha defensive. There are higher risks for injuries for both parties, but the omega especially, and they may have a harder time coming out of it due to injury or just overwhelming exhaustion (since both feel their instincts more than others, that can lead to little rest and downtime.)

That being said, a lot of it is dependent upon the alpha. More experienced alphas will have better control over themselves versus someone who has never spent a heat with an omega. Accidents can still happen, but the more time an alpha is around an omega, the easier it is for them to react properly to a heat.

reading: finished rereading tgcf lol,,, in loving memory of square checkbox: apparently apple is switching to circle ones? hateful wikipedia page for kessler syndrome my friend @celestialtourguide sent me a dm to ask about a few of the characters in this manuscript and i was immediately charmed by it. it's so pretty, i loved the informational blurbs, just really cool stuff. it was already on waybackmachine but i've gone ahead and updated it.

watching: kurtis conner looksmaxxing. weird little subculture peek. rewatched sideways' why the music in cats 2019 is worse than you thought because my roommate was interested. this led us to the same channel's why avatar has the most ironic soundtrack of all time because roommate misread ironic as iconic and she really likes that movie. no accounting for taste, but aight. much more interesting than i thought it would be. that video then lead us to tony hinnigan's woodwind demos because hell fuckin yes. big-ass panpipes.

i've been keeping up on dunmeshi anime in little watch sessions with my SO, and also am working through kill la kill with him! i've seen it before but he has not so i'm really enjoying that.

making: i managed to finish my secret samol gift in time for reveal day!!! comics are fuckin hard dude!!!! i don't know if i'll be doing it again but it was a fun challenge. i decided to use a New App for some reason instead of procreate because procreate has not been hitting right and i wanted comic half tone brushes for this project. app is called sketchbook, it's an orange icon with a pencil on it. shrug! it's fine! i'll probably keep using it for a bit. started working on an english paper piecing project! soliciting tips for that because right now my method is: cut out hexagon using pattern piece i made to be 1/4 in larger all around than the template, gluestick template onto hexagon, baste edges down neatly, whip-stitch right sides together. remove template once all six sides have something attached. i'm sure there's a better way to streamline this process, i'll have to experiment. this will end up as a dice bag i think.

finally, pottery starts again this week! so next week will have some of that in here

eating: ah beans i did not do a good job keeping track of this. uh. made the ground pork & cabbage thing again because my roommate got SO much napa cabbage for making kimchi and we had a shitload left over. napa cabbage isn't as good as a more standard cabbage for this imo, standard cabbage tends to be a little sweeter i think once it's cooked in? idk. had some stage 5 mental illness moments last week trying to cook dinner on a very short time scale with lots of other shit to do, following a recipe because fucking of course my roommate wanted me to cook with a recipe that night. anyways.

misc: like said at the top, somehow i managed to sign up for Another Activity god damn it. so now every saturday evening i run dnd. tl;dr i'm in a group irl that meets biweekly, someone who i give a lift to for that was complaining in the car that their other online group's dm ragequit after his encounter wasn't well-balanced (skill issue) and before thinking about it i just was like oh well i could probably step in if you need! god damn ittttt lol i have missed dming so it should be fun. i vibe checked them for a session 0 last week and they seem chill and honestly shouldn't be too much work on my end, especially if i yoink plots from mdzs ha ha ha. other than that, all is basically well. i've settled back into a schedule, applied for some summer positions (!), and absolutely hate the amount of busy work in one of my two classes. yippee

Voice

Vaduin never looked away from my face, moving with me, leading me through it and back down with slow circles of his fingers. He followed me back down to the bed, his hand cupping the back of my head as he lay me down on the pillow.

A smile touched his mouth as he brushed my hair out of my face. "I fear we've made something of a mess. Do you think the healers will mind?"

I laughed, tipping my head back and closing my eyes, the afterglow of orgasm warming me. "You made the mess," I said, my broad smile lighting my face. "I'm only co-located with it."

It's funny you listed The Overture as a forgotten patd video no one talks about anymore. On one hand because I found it to be such a foundational text for why I was interested in them at that time (something something the drama of it all, the only true friends standing together, we couldn't help them, etc etc) , partially because it feels weird that a high budget music video (~short film~ my ass) is forgottten media. The switch from livejournal to tumblr/twitter (and now discord) is causing so much loss of fandom knowledge, even of stuff that feels pretty basic.

Also. As someone who also got my arm twisted into going to a tiny christian university. I feel you. Biggest regret of my life. Solidarity <3

Yeah I definitely felt like The Overture was the most well-known of all of them (millions of views and still on FBR channel) but I still threw it on the post because I’d never seen anyone mention it before in any Ryden master post which I found SO strange, but then again I’ve never really been a hardcore Ryden. It was definitely incredibly beautiful to look at to the point where I rewound it several times to stare haha. 

In terms of lost media, was referring a bit more to this one because it’s equally as high-budget and from the same time but I’ve never seen anyone mention it:

It’s incredibly dramatic, I can’t figure out where it came from, it’s supposedly a “dvd” but I can’t find any listings or fanlore wiki entries mentioning it, and it’s only on Youtube because of the Panic stalker, etc.

Similarly there are a lot of MTV videos and other interviews I have never seen before that talk about split drama in-depth, but I feel like the narrative I always heard was that nobody ever talked about it. I joined bandom in Feb-March 2013 when MCR broke up and FOB came back so it was technically like the very end of Vices era but all the promotion was over and everything very quickly became focused on Too Weird. I went straight to Tumblr and I feel like most people there were my age. Most of the major Livejournal primers people were getting their lore from were made in like 2009 at the absolute latest, so I think a lot of discussion just got lost.

Also, part of why this is """lost media""" or whatever that the vast majority of people my age just did not “watch TV” as teens. The other part is that these are extremely hard to get to now. Finally I think some older-older fans are definitely aware of this type of content but choose not to discuss it because a lot of it is unpleasant or ruins their image of the band.

Venti: A certain Noctua has asked me to master his new album… But I’m a little tight on Mora lately. Say, aren’t you also touching up yours, Mr. Alberich? I can do yours afterwards~

Kaeya: Haha, I appreciate your offer. You’re certainly a talented engineer, but I’m afraid I’ll have to decline.

Venti: Oho? It’s not like you to be so formal. And around your drinking buddy? What’s your album called?

Kaeya: Death After Noon, simply for the taste of it. Anyway, I’ve got some guesses of what Diluc’s album might be about. You must have your hands full with a… fiery style like his, no?

Venti: I’m flexible with genre.

Kaeya: Genre isn’t the problem here.

Venti: Is there something in the lyrics you don’t want me to know?

[Kaeya recalls how he has cried on vocal takes because the lyrics are too personal and it’s his first time putting these emotions into a song.]

Albedo: You… do understand that once the album is released, he will have access to it like everyone else?

Kaeya: Albedo, think of it this way. He’s an engineer and a poet. How long do you think it’ll take him to decipher the symbolisms in the track titles alone?

Albedo: Symbolism and literary devices are not within my field of study, but I imagine Venti would have little difficulty with them.

Kaeya: Right, so you get it.

Albedo: Are you uncomfortable with the idea?

Kaeya: …

I finally have my m&g picture so i guess it’s time to talk about the shows eh?

MONTRÉAL

Because @pastlink, her friends and @fredv0mjupiter arrived early, @chaotic-gingey and I were able to jump the line, not without some people complaining. Yeah yeah i know, not the best thing, but we were working, not lounging.

We managed to be front row on the Daniel² side and despite my nemesis on my left that I’ve talked about, we were well placed. The crowd was rowdy but nothing compared to what it would be for Electric Callboy.

I about lost my shit when they arrived on stage and I’m not sure if it’s from the build up from months of waiting (tickets were bought in feb.!) or to be so close to them.

Then during arrow of love, @chaotic-gingey and I did the 🫶🏼 like the Daniel² and they pointed at us (thanks @pastlink ❤️).

Then the show ended and i almost got into a fist fight with my nemesis and went back home.

NYC

We arrived relatively early as it was @chaotic-gingey ‘s turn to choose our side and she wanted to be on Pascal’s side but sat down. We are too old.

Around 5 we walked to the front of the venue and she was wondering who was keeping them late and joking it was probably Kevin talking too much… until she turned around and saw Nico strolling in with Janel from Conquer Divide, a big cup of ice cream in hand. Her face was hilarious.

Tank came to see us and the other group that had won and led us downstairs. We were waiting in between two rooms and all we could see was Pascal standing awkwardly in the room and my friend talking to me in French about her not trying to freak out. Again, 10/10 sighting of her face.

We were finally let inside and David gave us a big hug, followed by Nico, Pascal and Kevin. The Daniel² were missing and I didn’t want to say anything but i was sad. I finally The Pink Mumu ™ coming in and Daniel said hi and gave us a hug.

David then gave us water bottle and we spoke with them but it’s still so ahhhhhhhh in my brain that i keep forgetting and remembering stuff.

- Kevin was very shocked that we drove from Montreal and we explained that it was as long as Toronto

- he didn’t understand my accent when I said we were going to see Bad Omens and he kept being like ‘who’s Ban Akron…’ until i managed to be understood. Woops.

- Kevin kept calling donkeys ‘horses’ and Nico would correct him like ‘it’s donkeys. They’re donkeys.’ And wow, if that isn’t me with @chaotic-gingey

- I’m sorry if I’m pretty much only remembering my exchsnges with kevin ok? He was right next to me and looking me in the eyes.

- I said I was from Italy and he started explaining the places they played there and how much he loved it

- he somehow knew the small French village my dad was in before moving here as its close to germany??

- He laughed when I said i was the one with the German sign and all the guys started laughing too at it. Making them laugh= goal

- he asked me what else i knew in German. This little shit was expecting something nasty or swear words and my brain just went ‘ich spreche kleine Deutsch’ (i speak a little German), to which the guys ‘hmmhmm’

- kevin praised my grammar and my accent and give me a minuuuuuute Im gonna throw myself in ice

- they said they’d love to tour with different bands and i was surprised by the answers they gave. They also talked about bad experiences with some bands

- Kevin: i dont want to badmouth bands […] so the band *** they did that. Nico: oh yeah and that band […] did this i wanted to go home. I wanted to die as one of them is one of my favorite band and he felt so bad but thats ok. ‘Maybe they had a bad day’ as he said

- he agreed my cat made us win the video. Thank you Gustave ❤️

- i somehow placed i was sad because i wanted to see Danskimo and they were very apologetic, saying he was sick. I understood of course but it would be just my luck haha.

- i gave them their bracelets before the picture and entrusted (pascal or kevin?) with Danskimo’s bracelets and the ugly shirt i had which had SPC vibes.

- one if the bracelet had fuckboi written on it and i said it was because i saw someone stole it from one of the conquer divide girls.

- nico the little shit proudly showed me his arm with the bracelet 🙃😂

- pascal took his bracelet and went ‘hehehe… fuckboi’

- then we took the picture and Kevin kept pulling me closer to him and Daniel and ihhhhhh yep.

- hugs. David big. Kevin bigger. Brain went brrr

There isn’t much to say for the show except Kevin and Danskimo were both wearing my bracelets and it made my day.

I love these idiots. CANT wait to see them again😭❤️
