Can I say that as someone whose original ship started off as Zutara but is a multishipper, I really, really hate how much their fandom has watered down the pairing. The ship has come to revolve so much on the obsession of not being canon that almost all content is framed as “how can we be “better” than canon?” Oh, Aang did this in the show or the comics or in LOK? Well, my OC Zuko would NEVER.

Zuko, Katara, and Aang exist as nothing else but to be their OCs and projections. Aang is the evil jealous boyfriend who holds Katara back and comes in between Zutara’s “true love.” Zuko and Katara are doormats who have no spine, except when it comes to Aang and Mai. Then they’ll “stand up” to their abusive exes.

Kataang content revolves so little around Zuko that I get whiplash when I see how much Zutara content revolves around Aang and Kataang. It’s all one-sided, delusional beef against Bryke anyway bc Bryke does not give a fuck about them and will make Kataang content because they are the only confirmed canon endgame ship and the main ship of the series, not to spite Zutara shippers. The whole shipping war continues to give them publicity and promotes the show, why else would they attempt to replicate it in Legend of Korra? I suspect that after seeing how popular Zukka has become post 2020, they’ll attempt to do the same for that ship too. All these posts about how “my Zutara fanfic is a fuck you to Bryke and their self-insert” is so funny because these grown ass men do not care and are only benefiting from your fan content that you so believe keeps them awake at night tossing and turning.

And you would think, after all the posts about how shitty LOK and the comics have treated Katara over the last decade, Bryke is FINALLY listening and giving her the post-canon development that she should have gotten ages ago, would be considered a positive sign for them. But instead they’re dreading all content that comes from Avatar Studios painting Katara in a positive and more independent light. Like what! Do you know how many fandoms I’ve been in which I would kill if the showrunners retconned awful post-canon characterizations about my fave characters, despite years and years of begging?

I'm dreading the new content too, but only because I haven't truly liked anything since the original show so I just don't want more disappointment.

"Don't do the thing we've been asking you guys to do all the time 'cause then we lose one of our main bullshit arguments to why Zutara is better than Kataang" is just the kind of stuff that shows all the "We totally care about Katara as her own separate character and not just an OC we can use to pretend we're dating Zuko" has always been and always will be bullshit.

ummm.... enemies to lovers books.... so I read fantasy and contemporary romance the most, so I'll demarcate based on genre

(oops this got long so see below the cut)

for fantasy: Fourth Wing, Rebecca Yarros - this book is MAD controversial because so many people were like 'I simply do not get the hype.' Anon, I got it. I agree that the writing and worldbuilding has flaws but also I'm an SJM fan so like, I'm here for dragons and romance, not airtight fantasy worldbuilding and poetic writing. Xaden and Violet have literally the most deliciously toxic relationship and it fills me with much joy.

Divine Rivals - Rebecca Ross when I tell you I *gobble gobble gobble* ATE this book up!! The world is really unique and interesting, the rivals are truly divine, and I loved the fantasy premise -- a soft fantasy/magical realism world where the tech is legend of korra-esque and magic has depleted but still hides in delightful corners. Like, magical typewriters??? phenomenal. The love story is VERY compelling and the plot had me gasping and nearly crying til the end. Once you've read this one, make sure you've got 'Ruthless Vows' (the sequel) ready to go!!

Also, honorable mentions to Guarded Treasure [Mae Lovette] (a The Mummy (1999) inspired potato chip read my sister got my mom for Christmas that I read on Kindle Unlimited and thoroughly enjoyed) and Cities of Smoke and Starlight [Alli Earnest] that I am reading slowly but surely that has a fun world to hang out in but just hasn't held my attention. (The author advertises as a dynamic inspired by anya/demitri in childhood favorite 'Anastasia' and I'm not saying she's wrong but I have yet to see it. But other readers seem to love it!!)

for contemporary romance:

Anything Ali Hazelwood. LISTEN!!! I know. I know, okay! I know she's Sarah Dessen, vol. 2, but she made the jump from fanfiction writer to MASSIVELY successful romance writer so maybe we all have something to learn from her!! Also, she writes enemies to lovers with different characters falling in love in different ways every time, and it's comfortable for my auDHD ass that likes to know how things will end. Yes, I've read all of her books, and here's how I rank them --

Love, Theoretically Elsie, newly graduated PhD fights for a prestigious job at MIT, while her ultimate rival and physics nemesis, Jonathan Smith-Turner sits smugly on the hiring committee. Except, he's a lot hotter than she thought he would be. And he's also the brother of the guy she's been fake-dating for money bc adjunct professors make dick and diabetic physics proteges need insulin and cheese to live. I literally go back and read my favorite pieces of this book when I'm in a reading slump/missing my boyfriend when he's on tour with his band. 10/10. Some catastrophically silly moments but like, we aren't here for the next literary classic.

Bride is it published omegaverse fanfic reminsicent of the self-insert days of livejournal yore? yes. yes it is. It's also a pleasure to read, laugh-out-loud funny and a novel take on supernatural romance, bringing in elements of SJM's Crescent City, Twilight, and a touch of omegaverse. As a treat. Even if you're not into A/B/O dynamics usually, (I'm not), I would still rec this book. It's more supernatural romance and relies on the reader knowing nothing about omegaverse lore -- baby's first omegaverse smut, if you will.

Loathe to Love you this is a MAJOR shoutout to her UNDERAPPRECIATED short story collection!! Ali's niche is Educated Women in STEM ready to destroy asshole STEMlords that want nothing more than seeing them fail, and this anthology has THREE engineers fighting for recognition in a sexist world and falling in love along the way. The last one, 'Below Zero', is my favorite !!

Love on the Brain Another disabled protagonist that really needs to checked for Ehlers-Danlos and POTS but lives undiagnosed after my own heart. Bee, a hopeless romantic with an odd attachment to Marie Curie, has the opportunity of a lifetime with NASA -- except her grad school nemesis is co-leading the project. People criticize the 2014-esque fashion choices of the FMC, forgetting that the book came out DURING that era of fashion, and would have been the HEIGHT of cool, in fact. The love interest in this one is def my fave, and there's a very large, very improbable, and thrilling twist right there on the end.

Check & Mate Ali's foray into YA, about a chess prodigy returning to the world of professional chess after dropping from the public eye in her adolescence rises fast and is a favorite to beat 'the bad boy of chess', who is DEFINITELY an asshole and cold and emotionless... right? Liked it, but I'm just not the target audience for YA anymore and I adore Ali's smut, which she obvs did not write for the two 18 yr old protags. But still good!

The Love Hypothesis. Yes, I've read it. And yes, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. But it's still painfully obvious as published reylo fic and also Ali crosses some hideous lines about bio/chem lab safety in this book that I simply cannot forgive her for. Also, since it's her debut, it's just not as good as the rest of her work.

genuine question, apart from the love triangle mess, why do you think so many people hate mako? is it bc he’s a cop? bc i thought we’d concluded that yknow irl he would never be one and the avatar’s system is different to ours.

like i’m not happy that lok has some strong copaganda but why is it only mako being held accountable when, if anything, chief beifong has been more corrupt in the show?

anyway, love seeing the mako acceptance bc omg lok tiktok can be very hateful

essentially i think people hate him because his trauma isn’t easily romanticized-he’s not funny, friendly, or clueless like bolin

obviously he and bolin both experienced massive trauma, but mako shielded bolin from a lot of it (see republic city hustle and also the part in season 1 when they’re trying to raise money to enter into the pro-bending finals), so it affects them in different ways

bolin got by in the streets by being harmless and likeable, which is a trait that also makes him likeable to people who was tlok

but mako, as the older sibling, had to take on a lot more of the burden, and he therefore expresses his trauma in a less “appealing” way

it makes him mistrustful and unfriendly to others (like when he ignored korra when bolin brought her to the backstage of the pro-bending ring)

it also makes him angry, like when he yells at korra for saying she has nothing

and i would also argue that the love triangle is just an extension of the theme of unromanticizable trauma

he had never been close to anybody except bolin since his parents died, much less been close to anybody romantically, so he was completely out of his depth

even more than that, his and bolin’s financial well-being depended on asami’s financial support and korra staying on the team-he couldn’t afford to disappoint either of them

so it was the perfect storm for the whole mess that ensued

and there’s NOTHING people hate more than when, god forbid, characters who’ve experienced trauma actually show symptoms of trauma🥴

if anything, mako being a cop is an excuse for people to hate a traumatized character

but nobody wants to say that so they just say acab! i hate mako!

A lot of Makorra shippers only moved on because they’re afraid of being called homophobic for not shipping korrasami. I LITERALLY saw someone on Instagram yesterday call a makorra shipper homophobic just for saying korrasami came out of nowhere. Also, Korrasami shippers LOVE to bring up the "popping bottles" backlash to make fun of makorra shippers. I left the tlok fandom in 2014 bc it was so toxic as a teenager, but now i’m 23. I’m no longer afraid of shipping something i always loved.

Ah, yes, I realized I didn’t address the fandom's toxicity in the last ask, but I’ve spoken about it before. I don't talk too much about the past because I was at the edge of the fandom back in 2014/2015. I was aware of fights, but the discussions I saw were moreso on bi-erasure. I saw one post saying it was wrong to ship Makorra. I remember being really confused about why Makorra was actually problematic, but I didn’t appreciate being told who I can ship the only dark-skinned woman protagonist on a major television network with. Why are you forcing me to ignore Mako and Korra’s relationship? Book 1 is practically about Mako and Korra, all other characters be damned. Me preferring the story of one pairing and a popular romance trope, second chances, is not wrong, and no one would know how I view the LGBT+ community based on who I ship in one show.

I ended up leaving the community because I was disappointed with season 4 in general. When Korra was released on Netflix, I figured it was time to rewatch the series again (plus, I’ve been binging all my favorite romance anime). So imagine my shock when I created a new Tumblr and Twitter account to rant and rave about TLOK, and I saw nothing but hate and name-calling in the Makorra tags. I saw people casually throwing around the word “homophobic,” and one person said people who don’t like Korrasami are just misogynistic. 

I just wanted pretty pictures, and people are out here psychoanalyzing shippers! So, I dug through some blogs and to feel more grounded with this fandom I didn’t recognize. After reading through their commentaries and experiences, I actually became more upset at Bryke than the teenagers/children who comment on Makorra posts saying how much better Korrasami is or accuse Makorra shippers of being homophobic. 

Yes, I truly believe these comments are mostly coming from people in their late teens and younger, at least in 2020. I can’t speak on 2014/2015, but since we were younger, the early 20s/late teens, I wonder if our age group was also the loudest. Don’t get me wrong, adults can be horrible people and can get really nasty. However, every time I look up the rudest commenters' profiles, they were teens. When one Korrasami shipper wrote “screw Makorra” on my AMV, I figured I’d have some fun trolling them until I clicked on their profile and saw a child. Needless to say, I ignored them and reflected on how parents are allowing their babies on TikTok while my parents freaked out at the idea of showing my picture on FB growing up.

Also, while it doesn’t give anyone an excuse to make such a strong accusation, part of me, as a straight person, feels like I can’t get too upset because I also become very aware of my privilege. The space I’m in is a majority of young LGBT+ fans (at least on Twitter where I’ve seen the most toxicity). Some people see TLOK as their safe space and imply why should there be Makorra shippers when they have all these other cis/het shows they can engage with. It doesn’t work like that, of course. TLOK doesn’t only feature Bi characters. They’re POC/Indigenous, women, and Korra has dark skin. That’s a lot of marginalized communities. Makorra/TLOK is my comfort show, not because she’s with a man, but because of the reasons I just listed. Also shipping Korra with Mako doesn’t mean she’s no longer bi. She’d still be attracted to women.

Here’s who I am upset with tho, Bryke. Mostly Bryan. While Makorra shippers called out Korrasami shippers for cyberbullying, the focus seemed to be on Bryan for making it seem like there was something wrong with them for not finding Korrasami’s narrative satisfying. It was especially sad to read bloggers who identified as being part of the LGTB+ community saying Bryan’s hetero-lens dismissed their experience and then having to defend/proving themselves to anonymous messengers. 

Fans saw it as a betrayal. They saw it as the go-head for the rude Korrasami shippers to harass Makorra artists because they “didn’t watch the show correctly.” When the creator, the person you admire, also puts the blame on you, that kind of pain is on another level.

Korrasami shippers played a huge role in kicking Makorra shippers out of the fandom, but we can’t underestimate how much Bryan’s statement is a slap in the face. He used his characters and social justice as a shield for reasonable criticism. Just because we say a story is bad and Asami is grossly underwritten doesn’t mean that we’re against the idea of Korra and Asami being a couple. 

Of course, I’ve seen some very problematic statements from Makorra shippers. After all, homophobia is real. However, aside from the actual bigots, people have no issue with Korrasami. They just wanted a stronger connection between the girls. Many people seem to think Makorra shippers were looking for more romance, but we know we couldn't expect that. We can expect more screentime, musical cues, and more emotional support, which most people can see as platonic, but be romantic if you really want to. Mako’s interactions in book 4 can be seen as platonic, but all of us Makorra shippers saw it to be romantic.

Popping bottles! I completely missed that joke in 2014 and I discovered it this year. I agree it’s pretty annoying, but I become a troll and say I’m popping bottles for my Makorra moments. I don’t get any engagement, but I don’t seem to lose followers for it. Maybe popping bottles represents “straight-baiting?” I don’t get it why it’s so funny after all this time, but we’re Makorra shippers. We’re the joke 🙄

Anyways, to wrap up, lately, there seems to be a bit of a shift on Twitter. When I first created an account. I stayed in my little corner live-tweeting about TLOK and Makorra. I had to stop looking at the Makorra tag because it was so negative. Now, I’m seeing people admit they’re cute, and then saying they’re platonic soulmates. I’ll take it, although, as one commenter said, “that’s boring!” 

Someone led a Makorra Week back in October, and it was really nice! I have feeling people speaking up on the name-calling and reminding people that we’re talking about 2D characters helped. We just want to be left alone and enjoy the scenes we have in the show, art, and fanfiction. 

Keep shipping who you want! Don’t let any stranger shame you for your shipping preferences, especially in fiction! I’m so happy you feel more comfortable shipping these two dorks! You’re not alone! I’ve been a Makorra shipper since 2012, and while I find Korrasami cute (I love Korra, and I love Asami), Makorra is my OTP. I really like them, and I think they were meant for each other.

a) i saw your posts on gaang+fire nation trio mbtis and i wanted to say thank you, i too got into mbti as a teenager undergoing an identity crisis and to this day it still annoys me when people type fictional characters without understanding the theory & believing character actions are the same as their cognition (i’ve seen sokka typed as an entj?? which.. what?? as you say, he is a military strategist because of war but is a scientist by nature.. and even his strategy is very entp. a ne-ti user if i’ve ever seen one). i don’t think it’s fully like, Real, but if one is going to do it i think it should be done correctly. so thank you :)

a) what are your thoughts on au’s where zuko spends a bit of time as firelord doing what he can but eventually abolishes the monarchy and absconds to wherever the hell he’s got in mind to go (he carries out decolonization work, of course, just not as firelord)? i feel like it’s a bit unrealistic but i also like they should not be putting sixteen-year-olds in charge of countries

a) right lmfaoo same i don’t think mbti is truly #valid, but it’s fun! much like back to the future parts 1&2 (but NOT 3, 3 is trash). and yes sokka is actually the most entp to ever entp, so idk how ppl could contest that, but i guess people just love being wrong, don’t they... 

a.2: electric boogaloo) my thoughts are that that sounds great and completely unfeasible. like, i made a post once saying that the gaang (especially katara) would want the monarchy to be abolished, and a bunch of ppl jumped in my replies to be like ��ACTUALLY the monarchy CAN’T be abolished bc there would be a civil war” and like. yeah. i know. i didn’t say i think the fire nation monarchy should be abolished, i said katara et al would think that. how dare you say we piss on the poor, and all that. 

but yeah obviously putting a traumatized teenage boy in charge of an extremely precarious political situation is not the best move for anyone involved, and if there were literally any other option, it would seem pretty damn appealing. to say that the monarchy should be abolished altogether is, in my opinion, the correct stance, but unfortunately that couldn’t happen overnight, because historically speaking, that situation would not end well. since i am not a monarchist (sorry 2 disappoint) i do think that the fire nation needs to be completely reformed, decolonized, demilitarized, democratized, etc. in a way that includes giving the monarchy significantly less absolute power over the nation, if any at all. of course, we know that the firelord isn’t just a figurehead by the time of korra, since izumi has the power to make important decisions concerning the actions taken by the fire nation army, but i mean. lok’s politics suck so let’s just ignore those implications for peace of mind. 

yeah i like to think that over the generations after zuko is crowned firelord, they do gradual yet significant work to abolish the monarchy, just as firelord zoryu sets up the pieces to unify the clans in the shadow of the kyoshi. a prominent theme in that novel is how political change cannot happen overnight, and one must work hard and diligently, making progress over lifetimes, to improve the world over time. it’s not flashy, but it’s ultimately more effective in the long-run. so while i would love to say that zuko turns the fire nation into a thriving democracy over the course of a year and then he gets to move to a cottage on a hillside and take a big fat nap, that’s just not realistic. plus, being firelord is the natural conclusion to zuko’s arc, since it is his responsibility to lead the nation into a better future, and taking steps to abolish the monarchy while not using that as an excuse to shrug off his responsibility would be part of that process.

i remember in the tags of a post was something about a mako recovery fic... care to elaborate vae??? (if u want ofc) bc im very curious now and i think it would be great coming from you. im also of the opinion that they could’ve done so much more with mako’s recovery but tbh thats just a constant in tlok’s writing

second of all i am always surprised to hear people read what i put on this site even if it’s a text post of mine getting many notes so im shook you read my tags and remembered? 

but for actually elaborating: i think this is the post which also i love you for thinking about this for 2 weeks apparently? 

anyway injury discussion warning but, lightning strikes can cause spiral fractures in long bones, dislocations, nervous issues, heart damage i believe? and clearly scarring on the skin, etc. some people after the finale were apparently disappointed they didn’t end up killing mako-- something about completing his arc and being more interesting for korra and asami to come back and realize that happened, and for bolin to have to deal with that, but honestly that would’ve been... too depressing. i think if they would’ve shown the krew dealing with his recovery it would’ve been better than either what we got or mako dying 

i think one of the worst things when you’re waiting for someone to recover is when they do gain consciousness, but you’re not sure if they recognize you or not. i imagine this from bolin’s perspective, after dragging mako out of the mecha, delirious, hooked up to medical equipment bolin might never have seen before (the doctor or nurse explains bender-originated lightning strikes are usually short exposure, similar to natural strikes from the occasional bender fight or malfunction at the electrical factories, but this is different. they really dont know what might happen) 

korra and asami come when they can, and bolin has to explain to everyone what mako did. opal stays by bolin’s side but this kind of stress is not like anything mako let him be exposed to before (up till bolin serves under kuvira and has to escape that) so i think bolin is stressed and tired and probably a little mean about it 

idk who would be there but bolin and maybe opal, maybe asami are there when mako wakes up for the first time, but he’s intubated and can’t speak, and he doesn’t seem to recognize them. bolin tries encourage him to squeeze his hand, but there’s no reaction. the nurses come, and the visitors are ushered out. i know next to nothing about medical procedures or anything but i’m sure there’s tests and things for nerve/muscle/skin/bone damage they’d need to attend to once he’s conscious on some level ??? 

mako is in and out for the next week or two-- bolin by his side whenever he could be, and asking mako if he recognized people as they came to visit. wu comes at some point and makes sure mako and bolin and their family will be taken care of-- even if mako doesn’t recover well. No more having to rely on asami or anyone else. bolin absolutely snaps at him before wu has the chance to explain but he cuts the check nonetheless (as wu should tyvm) 

as soon as mako is coherent though he’s playing like there’s nothing wrong and bolin has nothing to worry about and bolin knows it’s not true, but it’s so easy to just believe mako like always. except mako really needs assistance and probably has to live with bolin or someone, but mako is always pushing to go back to work. i don’t think he’d be able to work until around the time of zhu li and varrick’s wedding? 

i think with all the efforts to fix republic city, and stabilize the earth kingdom, it would be difficult to balance everyone’s greater responsibilities with helping mako but really showing that struggle and how everyone reacts to mako’s near death experience would. be interesting. idk i’m really bad at concluding these things lately but yeah <3

If it’s a topic that truly interests me, I really enjoy studying it but when it’s things like idk mechanics I’ve basically no motivation to study and it’s kind of a drag...

I’d want to live in the avatar universe ngl Sometimes you just gotta bend that rock you know what I mean? On a serious note, I really find the dynamics of that world really interesting and you can bend elements, how cool is that?

I really enjoy my shoe collection, I don’t generally spend that much money on clothes and don’t have the tendency to follow the trends, I buy at max 5 pieces a year, sometimes less but my shoes, now they’re my precious ones

Korra: I do not understand how people dont like her. Shes spunky and doesnt take shit and she has her own opinions... definitely a Taurus with ADHD you cannot change my mind. I feel like the reason ppl dont like her is purely based on the fact that shes a poc and a woman with a strong opinion and mindset and we're all taught that that's not acceptable. Ppl just can't stand that shes not like Aang. ANYWAY I LOOOOVVVEEEEE HER AND I RELATE TO HER SO MUCH I know shes not canonically ADHD but I still feel very represented

Jinora: sooo different from what I imagined! I thought she'd be more of an extrovert!! Shes so cute tho and I love how shes clearly a daughter of Tenzin!!

Overall thoughts so far:

OKAY SO I've waited with watching this for such a long time bc I just figured it would disappoint me bc I love Atla so so much!! So I never got to watching it always coming up with excuses for myself. Now that it came to NETFLIX though, I had no excuses left and boy am I happy I didn't. This show has already been amazing so far. There are certain things I still dont really understand but I'm sure we'll get clarification on that (why couldn't Korra airbend and spirit thing yk why and how can Amon take away powers? Etc) I'm so excited to watch more! It hold my attention so so well, I love the characters (I LOVE KORRA!!!) Anyway I was not disappointed and that was a great surprise!! I'm gonna start on season 2 and write another on of these when I finish that!

HISTORY

the montagnier family was originally located in the south of france until luc’s grandfather moved them to quebec. their empire was in manufacturing all kinds of weaponry and selling them to governments and other spy families and organisations. if you needed something a bit obscure or unique, this was the family you'd come to.

luc grew up in a fairly isolated countryside area in a family of four brothers who he loved for the first few years of his life. first was marc, shy and respectful, luc himself two years behind, and then another two years graced the family with twins; charles and elias who lived by their own rules. marc and luc had always been close, marc was the best big brother possible and luc loved him a lot.

eventually after being pitted and forced to compete against each other for so long, it got quite personal and their bonds started being tested. their mother turned a blind eye to their father's borderline abusive methods when luc overtook his older brother in their father’s tests and training. bruises and broken bones were only natural in training so there wasn't much she could say even if she wanted to.

from as long as he could remember, he'd been firing guns. there was a shooting range on their estate and they went on hunting trips, too. his dad often had him show customers the potential of their weaponry and so he'd always been thrusted into that life whether he wanted a say or not. it’s been clear since he was around fourteen that if anyone was taking over the family business it'd be him, not his older brother, marc.

this definitely caused somewhat of a rift between him and marc, as he'd end up getting much harsher punishments when luc would disarm or ground him.

luckily for luc, he did enjoy fighting and was exceptionally gifted in the life planned out for him. he was always the most determined to gain their father's approval, which definitely showed in their results and how obedient he was in front of the man. when he finally got what he wanted, he didn't quite expect it to mean what it did. it was rare but every now and then he would kill for his dad. whether it was someone who betrayed the family or a potential threat to their business, if his dad told him to, he would, no questions asked. it was during this time he was more excluded from training with his brothers since he would be with his dad instead.

SUICIDE TW !!!!!!

his oldest brother marc was sent to blackthorne once he was eighteen and ended up committing suicide at the end of his second year, with luc set to follow the next year. this news was shocking for the montagnier family as luc's father was bitterly embarrassed and disappointed by his firstborns' death, wanting to cover it up as a murder so it couldn't be tied to the family name with such dishonour. it quickly created a divide as charles and elias defended marc's actions and revealed he'd been struggling with depression for the majority of his life, much like they did, which was all unknown to luc, who, for the first time, felt the repercussions of his father's favouritism. he had a new found rebellion against him that was violent with them going at each other's throats for the foreseeable future. luc ended up avoiding his place at blackthorne in hopes to piss off his dad and becoming more reclusive and bitter as time went on.

he really took his brother's death personally, believing he was a factor in it and wishing he'd been there for him more closely. if anyone so much as mentions marc to him he will be on guard and very easily angered. i think before marc died he was very charismatic, egotistical at times and driven whereas now he’s lost a lot of his energy and is more negative & aloof.

the following year was Rough™. he was no longer his dad's golden boy and the family dynamic shifted a lot with marc's death as luc ended up protecting his younger twin brothers instead of beating them for their dad's favour. he's certain he'd have been disowned had his mother not aligned herself with the kids as well.

i think their family dynamic is kinda like the cha family from sky castle if anyone has seen it !

luc eventually decided to enrol in school late, only to end up at gallagher instead. which... i mean, i think before marc died he was excited about attending blackthorne. so he’s bit ??? uncertain about the girls school.

PERSONALITY

genuinely i think it comes down to so many factors, whether he’s in a good mood, who’s speaking to him etc but neutrally he’s quite charming, happy to mess about a bit but more or less takes most stuff too seriously. since he’s not around his dad i do think he will explore a lot more and seek out adventure and fun but if he’s got a test or something due the next day then he’ll bail early since he is defo the type to never let his grades or performance be ruined

he’s quite cocky + likes to win no matter what so yes he will ruin a friendship to beat u at monopoly. second place is last place in his head.

at his best he can be confident, alluring, courteous, loyal… at his worst he's aggressive, destructive, apathetic and always says shit he doesn't mean !!!! will he apologize ?? unlikely but he'll try n make it right once he’s calmed down

thinks the best way to deal with things is with his fists, he’s so EASY to snap and start a fight n he’ll.... maybe apologise for it

i think he defo likes to pretend he’s got no problems and so reverts to a social, supportive friend every once in a while. the type to be brutally honest !!

he’s a definite know it all, thinks he’s the dog’s bollocks, gods gift etc !!!!! doesn’t believe in god but still. I kinda see him a bit jocky idk why but more brooding n isolating 70% of the time bc he’s easily pissed off but when he’s having fUNNNNN he’s ok like a solid guy at times just easily angered

very flirty, he's a major ladies man despite actually being GAY. which is a secret. sh. only two people know he’s gay and that’s his current beard girlfriend ellie cavanagh and childhood friend regine ren. more ppl can defo find out in time and i’m sure ppl have speculations ? maybe have seen him hooking up with guys or something when he thought no one was looking etc probs think he’s bi who knows!!! but for now those two are the only people he’s actually spoken to about it!!!! so if anyone else tries he will deny it as he’s very against the idea of coming out so will not discuss it ty pls.

and it’s not that he doesn’t enjoy sleeping with girls, he’ll be having a great time regardless but he just aint abt to love them like that pls understand

still, he is in a current relationship with ellie who is acting as his beard for him. they have ‘ dated ’ before and are off and on a lot, so they probably seem pretty toxic tbh since ellie n him can clash n argue and he defo still hooks up with other girls despite being in a relationship so feel free to kill him for cheating !

i'd love for blackthorne ppl to have known his brother, he'd have been around about 22/23 and a fourth year now if he was still alive so ?? it might help luc with some closure if he could talk about him since it happened at blackthorne

ppl to know the family, some family friends would be amazing !!! i feel regardless of alliances etc their family would have stayed as neutral as possible since they're selling weapons so they want all the customers.

so people that know HIM while he was growing up would be interesting esp those expecting him to have joined blackthorne when he was supposed to 2 years ago, and obvs him probably changing from who they knew him as to a more negative version now

might put a wc for his twin bros as they potentially joined his arrival at gallagher as first years too but who knows. they’d be 18 so if anyone wants a family friend connection that is around that age, maybe they were closer to the twins than luc ??

so i just finished season 3 of the legend of korra (spoiler alert btw) and i am DISAPPOINTED

weirdly enough i like kai a whole lot and i Very like what his thoughts probably were like in the earth kingdom prison thing

like,, he probably thought he was totally alone in there and nobody was coming for him bc he lied to the korrew (i dont know if thats actually the name for them but now it is fight me) about his past and tricked and abandoned mako and bolin and bolin probably felt so betrayed and mako never liked him anyway and he ran off to steal from people and tenzin probably thought he was a disgrace of an airbender for everything he’s done

and he was just thrown into solitary confinement and his stomach and side still hurt from having rock discs thrown at him and it was all his fault for being a shit korrew member and for not just doing what he was told

and then he thinks about jolina and how she probably hates him for all of that too and he really fucked up

i know he’s depicted sort of as a lil shit who’s still a good and humorous person but he is still a kid and i know damn well i’d be overthinking the Fuck outta things if i were in his position and I Want That Very Much

xion - kingdom hearts aaaaaaaa xion made such a big impact on me as a kid. kh days was my first kh game so i was very attached to the roxas/axel/xion narrative and the pain that is xion being erased by the end of the game. i especially love how she’s characterized in the kh days manga, the way she feels like a teenaged girl really stood out to me for some reason. there’s this scene where she’s with roxas and axel and they’re talking about something and i think at this point she knows something’s sus about her existing in the first place, so when roxas asks her what’s wrong she just kinda passive-aggressively replies? she’s like, oh, yeah, because you two are such good friends. but there’s layers to the fact that she feels like she doesn’t belong and i love how that plays into the plot later in the game

wanda maximoff/scarlet witch - marvel my love for wanda has a lot to do with the timing of me getting into marvel comics/mcu/x-men: evolution being around a messy time in high school for me so i kinda just projected onto wanda hard (so hard that i even made a sona whose character is literally she wants to be the scarlet witch lmao!) it’s also just kinda hard to talk about what i love about wanda when there are those three versions of her i mostly think of... i love mcu wanda’s tragedy in losing those closest to her, i love x-men:evolution wanda’s weirdly super goth design and her conflicting dynamic with pietro, and i really loved the 2015-2016 scarlet witch series of comics. i loved that it focused on her dissonance with who she thought she was up to this point and how much learning that she’s not a mutant affected her (i mean i don’t love that she’s not a mutant but whatever that’s a whole other rant entirely), so she puts herself to work on this whole witch thing like hey this is the New Me while simultaneously still running away from the shame and disappointments of her past.

piyoko - di gi charat my daughter! my sweet eight-year-old panda daughter who must absolutely be protected by her three Big Boy Bodyguards as they try to take over the world. that’s it that’s the whole dynamic of Leave It To Piyoko and i loved it as a kid and i love it now oh my GOD have you seen this opening that’s the mid 2000s i-found-this-from-a-local-dvd-rental-place shit i MISS

korra - legend of korra wacky writing issues concerning the whole show itself aside, i love korra as a character a lot. i’m definitely biased because the show aired from 8th grade to junior year hs for me and something about that timing just made watching korra grow and struggle and change really stick with me. oh and the fact that she and asami helped me realize i’m bi lmao.

I’m guessing that, besides being the team’s mascot/furry, Lance also functions as a tracker of sorts. 

His posture (squatting on the ground), the fact that he looks like he’s holding something (like mayhaps a scooped up bit of dirt), the way he’s looking over his shoulder as he gives the team his Opinion, the way they all seem decidedly unimpressed at his deductions considering he only sniffed dirt- Fantasy Tracker™, Babey!

Anyway, going off that, it looks like the party is trying to track something (a monster? Lotor’s character? Keith’s?).

I bet Pidge’s armor makes her super top-heavy. If she fell over, she’d look like a turtle on its back.

Also I can’t get over her CHICKEN ARMS and her BIGASS double-bladed axe like. She really is going all out huh.

This is pure speculation, but in my opinion it looks like Allura’s character isn’t a princess. I mentioned this in a different post but I genuinely thought Pidge was going to be a rogue or some sort of magic user, so DPS/Tank Pidge has completely blindsided me and I’m loving every second of it.

Pidge doesn’t roleplay based on her actual self and personality. No, she’s creating Fantasy Pidge™ for a Fantasy World™ which means living out every wild dream she’s ever had!!! She’s chaotic neutral bitch and LOVING it.

She has a DOUBLE-BLADED AXE and it it’s not at least 3/4 her size then what, pray tell, is the point. I want Pidge to heft her axe around like it’s nothing, and then when she puts it down it literally shakes the ground. That’s the ultimate power move.

That would also explain why Shiro is constantly wearing a black cloak and hiding his beautiful, perfect face. Because he’s on the run and has to stay undercover, bitch!

NGL, I’m a lesbian but I stared at the second picture of Shiro for a good ten seconds. Mostly because Shiro’s hair looks really, really good, and it’s a balm to my eyes after season 4 and 5.

Also, I just realized, his crown/coronet/WHATEVER is in the same place/represents his tuft of white hair! You can see this most clearly in the first pic :3c That’s so cute!

I’ll admit, I’m a little disappointed because at first, I thought Shiro was wielding a gigantic two-handed sword, which is absolutely badass and kickass. However, on closer examination I can see what looks to be a shield strapped to Shiro’s back (apparently over the cloak, which is weird lol), so Shiro most likely wields a so-called “one-handed” sword.

I won’t lie, for a hot second I thought Shiro might be wielding a club or something because I couldn’t see a sword hilt, but if you look at the left picture really closely, you can see what looks to be a black sword hilt. I did some googling, because swords are cool, and I’d guess Shiro’s sword is based off a knightly sword.

*Okay I see a lot of people giving crap for Mako for being a bad boyfriend and all, but like,,,stop? I mean, you can dislike him and everything but he’s basically a young adult who makes mistakes. He’s human like us, you can’t tell me you haven’t screwed up real bad at something before? Besides, it’s a learning experience, he’ll learn. 

*And why wouldn’t Mako be supportive of korrasami? They’re his two best friends and they matter a lot to him, he just wants them to be happy. He’s not a soulless monster. He’s actually just very human. Not all characters are perfect, guys. Mako’s a perfect example of this.

There are, quite a lot of things I dislike about this, to the character dynamics and how I sorta undermined the bad guys out of laziness, but mainly it’s just a fun thing to pass time and experiment on, and at the end of the day, I’m kind of happy I actually managed to get it done.

What I mean when I say I love Voltron

I love Voltron. I really do. But it’s not flawless, and it’s a show I have loved and will continue to love in spite of it’s flaws. I felt this way before season 7 and I still feel this way. Now I feel like the reason there’s so much discourse around what Voltron even is and how the show should handle it’s characters is because Voltron means different things to different people. This is something that happens with any piece of media, and Voltron, being a reboot that has reached people in many demographics, is no exception. Some people got into it bc they saw cute fan art, some people say that it was the same crew from Korra, some wanted LGBT rep, some people saw a reboot of a show they loved, etc,. For me, I saw a really fun and diverse set of characters going into space and having adventures. The concept seemed simple and fun, plus the animation was fantastic (and it still is!) Because of that, I didn’t care that the pacing was off at times or that the show picked up plot lines and then forgot them. So looking back, the show has gone in a direction I didn’t expect. 

Now, this is just my opinion and if you disagree that’s totally fine. Like I said, I went into the show thinking it was a show about��diverse set of characters going into space and having adventures. For me, it went from being a character-driven story to a plot-driven one, focusing heavily on the war. So at first, this really threw me off, and I was disappointed. The show felt different, and while others welcomed it, I had fallen in love with a version of the show that was different from what it became. While some characters still had a chance to shine on their own, I saw felt that the team dynamic was off. I missed the storylines focused solely on team bonding, the characters backgrounds and the team dynamic we started to see in previous seasons. But after taking some time to think about it I realized that I love Voltron, and I think I always will. I love the revamping of old ideas, the animation, the soundtrack, and specially, the characters. Just because the show became something from what I expected, it doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy it. Am I sad about how some things were handled? Yes. Does the cast and crew deserve any harassment? No. At this point, I want to see where the show takes us going into season 8.

long rant about mostly cartoons

been hella avoiding the sanders sides fandom in search of having more interests and I've been going back to some faves, and exploring in general, but fuck man. voltron fans are toxic as hell, dont get me started on atla holy shit yall need jesus, and shera doesnt have enough content to go anywhere with. 

like with voltron i only looked into it because ive seen so many people on here that love the show. like i have made jokes about not knowing hat a klance is but shipping it anyway bc the aesthetic was nice. but fuckkkkkk. dont say that. yall got some big ass opinions like man its a cartoon. sure, a lot of folks are upset but if they feel like they were disappointed, let them. dont police other peoples feelings. youre not stopping them from being “toxic.” i dead ass stopped watching voltron after i saw the first episode of season 8. some het relationships are good right? i couldnt get behind that they were giving. but i thought the characters themselves were dry. they had potential but the fans give them more emotional depth than the show does. i could go on a longer rant but i wont.

now, theres atla. fucking christ. lets start with minor things. i always thought tophs not a crush but kind of a crush on sokka was really cute. toph has been one of my favorite characters since i was little. but i do like sokka and suki. i did think katara and aang were cute but once i rewatched it i had some opinions. aang kind of stayed the same the whole time. aang is a sweett character but why does katara mother him? it upsets me that she is forced into a maternal role. she shouldnt have to mother a kid who has an obvious crush on her. that would be very awkward. now dont get me wrong, zuko has flaws but fuckin christ he changed. he has an amazing redemption arc. i never liked azula as much ass ome people,i guess im not as forgiving. she was too psychotic. mai bothered me. she was boring, gloomy, not a good balance. and then i glanced at stuff involving zuko and katara after watching book three again, and apparently legend of korra watered down katara’s character? fuck. i never watched lok because i was always angry about it. i saw one episode once and hated everything about it.

she-ra is precious and i love it. i would like things to be harder for them, to be honest, but it is still a cartoon. the art style is cute and glimmer is my favorite. overall, there isn’t really enough content to uh sway me into a shipping disaster but i am aware that with more content, there will likely be a shipping war. it comes eventually. 

and for my issue with ss right now, it’s just that sometimes i need a break. to be clear, logicality and prinxiety will own my heart forever because they have a nice balance. moxiety is cute too, but feels like family love. this isnt me trying to bash anyone else’s opinion or preference, just me stating mine. if anyone wants to come bash my opinion or agree with me, im always down to make friends. 

if anyone has shows or books to recommend, hmu i love new things.

My thoughts on Allurance in Voltron Season 6 (spoiler: I don't like it)

This is all opinion. I've steered clear of voltron ships thus far and I really don't want to add fuel to the ship war, but the show is pushing this hard and I really need to vent bc these are two of my favourite characters

First of all I want to clarify I am not a Klance shipper by any stretch of the imagination. And if you ship Allurance, more power to you for seeing something in that relationship I don't, because judging by season six that's what we're heading for.

It's just, in my opinion, the worst direction they could have gone for both Lance and Allura's characters.

Setting aside the debate about possible queerbaiting (although certain members of the cast and crew - Hi, Jeremy - have hinted at LGBTQ representation, there has been very little evidence of representation in the actual show, so I'd argue the show itself has promised nothing) and the question of whether or not the show canonically supporting Klance is morally correct after the ship wars, harassment and blackmail debacle (I know most klance shippers are lovely people but you're already one of the biggest ships on tumblr and you have enough content to sink an actual battleship), Allurance is still the least interesting endgame for these characters.

Lance was evolving in seasons 3-5. Setting aside his new respect for Keith, he was being genuinely supportive of Allura without hitting on her. That maturity shows genuine character growth, and yes, I understand Lance is still more respectful now, but seeing him regress to pining for Allura is really disappointing to me when his friendship with her was one of my favourite things about s5. Especially considering that this season the 'Lance has a major role in saving Shiro' arc we were promised (an excellent opportunity for independent character development) was replaced with a STUPID FUCKING LOVE TRIANGLE. Because if there's one thing these writers learnt from The Legend of Korra it's that everyone fucking loves those sexy love shapes (or knots in the case of Book One)

Side note, in light of this new romantic development to their relationship, I also dislike how Lance's attraction to Allura in previous seasons has been mostly portrayed as a physical and not emotional thing (seriously, the stuff about her making him want to be a better person came completely out of the blue, I never got the impression Allura was a genuine motivator for Lance's growth). Lance's attraction was also always, without fail the butt of the joke, which irks me because the show was basically teaching us as an audience not to take the idea of them together seriously. In retrospect, that seems a little two-faced.

Finally though, I think Allurance is a continuation of the legacy of poor romance development in both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. From my perspective this ship combines the most annoying parts of both Kataang (i.e. the idea that if you do nothing but hopelessly pine for someone you'll be rewarded and they will fall in love with you because you 'deserve it', despite there being little evidence of romantic attraction beforehand) AND Makkora (i.e. Pursuing someone relentlessly is the way to make them fall for you).

Now, paying due respect to Allurance, their relationship as it stands is nowhere near as unhealthy as Makkora and has better build up than Kataang, but it still aggravates me that the writers seem to be hell bent on taking the most pedestrian option for these characters.

I may not ship it, but at least Klance would have been a genuinely interesting endgame that really forced Lance to mature as a character, a flipping his whole 'ladies man' facade would have been huge and tied in to his hidden vulnerability.

Even having Lance end up with Pidge would have had a similar effect, completely reversing his immature facade and emphasising attraction being more than skin deep.

At the root of it though this just feels like lazy, uninteresting writing. Now Lance's character is tied to the immature place where he started, pining after Allura, when he has grown so much without her (no matter how much the show tries to retcon Allura into playing a role in that). Lance deserves to grow beyond Allura. Also, how awesome would it be to see a feminine princess character wind up with no love interest and be perfectly fine with that?

I don't know. We still have 26 more episodes in the tank and it's possible things could change, but given how hard s6 pushed this?

I just don't know. Why do these shows do so much right and always get this one thing wrong?
