The Great Binge: The Drug-Fuelled “Belle Epoque”
The Belle Époque or La Belle Époque; French for "Beautiful Epoch" is a period of history, usually considered to begin around 1871–1880 and to end with the outbreak of World War I in 1914. It was a period characterized by optimism, peace, economic prosperity, colonial expansion, and technological, scientific, and cultural innovations. In this era of France's cultural and artistic climate (particularly within Paris), the arts markedly flourished, and numerous masterpieces of literature, music, theatre, and visual art gained extensive recognition.

The Great Binge refers to the same period spanning 1870 to 1914 in North America. It was coined by modern historian Gradus Protus van der Belt to describe a time when drugs like cocaine, heroin, opium, absinthe, laudanum, and many more were freely available not just from your local pharmacy, tobaconists or the neighbourhood bar, but also from the barbershop, the stationers, and even confectioners.

Between 1827 and 1842, over 27,000 pounds of opium came into the ports of the United States alone, where the drug found an unexpected distribution network of businessmen, presidential parents, and even Ivy League schools, which all had ties to the Opium trade in the late 19th century.

The Illustrated London News print of the clipper steamship Ly-ee-moon, built for the opium trade, c. 1859
“Princeton’s first large benefactor, John Green, funded his contribution through the opium trade […] Yale University’s infamous Skull and Bone society was funded by the most successful family of opium dealers in America,” reveals Harvard’s magazine, The Crimson, adding that as America’s gateway institution for the drug that soon spread to other Ivy Leagues along the East Coast, “Opium once pervaded campus life at Harvard […] throughout the 1800s, its black smoke kept the university’s veins flowing with green and its faculty and students perpetually dazed.”
Tumblr media
The term “pipe dream” actually originates from the opium dens of turn of the century America where people smoking an opium pipe would come up with ideas, theories and fantasies whilst hallucinating.
Tumblr media
In 1908, President Roosevelt appointed Hamilton Wright as the first Opium Commissioner in the United States to begin targeting opium dealers. The irony here is that Franklin D. Roosevelt’s grandfather, Warren Delano, was an opium peddler, and his drug trade was responsible for the bulk of the family’s fortune. Roosevelt’s mother, Sara Delano, travelled to Hong Kong with her family to join her opium-trading father in the 1860s.

The crackdown on the Great Binge inevitably began with the signing of the 1912 International Opium Convention to suppress opium smoking and to limit it to medicinal purposes. In the 1920s, in the US, an anti-drug crusade also saw heroin cough drops and cocaine tablets to slowly disappear from stores and bathroom cabinets.

Pope Leo XIII even allowed his face to be used in Vin Mariani’s marketing campaign. He was very much a brand ambassador, citing that it strengthened him “when prayer was insufficient”.

Chart: Courtesy of The New York Times
Children from ultra-wealthy families are more than twice as likely to gain admission to Ivy League schools compared to others with comparable test scores, finds a widely shared new working paper from a group of Harvard economists who study inequality.
Why It Matters: Even as the U.S. Supreme Court just eliminated racial preference in college admissions, the data show another kind of bias — that is, toward the very wealthiest applicants (who are disproportionately white).
• "In effect, the study shows, these policies amounted to affirmative action for the children of the 1%, whose parents earn more than $611,000 a year," per the New York Times report on the paper.
Between The Lines: The schools examined — the eight Ivies plus Stanford, Duke, M.I.T. and the University of Chicago — graduate a disproportionate share of the country's business and political leaders.
• 12% of Fortune 500 CEOs went to an Ivy, as did a quarter of U.S. Senators and 13% of the top 0.1% of earners, notes the NYT.

Is Stanford an ivy league school
Ivy League universities are probably associated with academic prestige, scientific breakthroughs, and high-powered, world-renowned alumni.
Stanford University is one of the most prestigious and well-known universities not only in the United States, but around the world.
While Stanford is not a member of the eight-school Ivy League, it is an extremely prestigious, selective, and impactful university that often ranks above many Ivy League institutions in publications such as U.S. News and World Report.
The only reason why Duke, MIT, and Stanford do not belong to the Ivy League is that they did not excel at sports when the Ivy League was created. It is easy to rank these colleges among the best 15 colleges in the U.S., and they offer similar career prospects and educational standards to Ivy League schools.
Most of the students dream is to get into Ivy League schools in Texas.
Does the Ivy League accept SAT?
How do you determine a good SAT score for Ivy League admission? SAT scores of 1580 (out of 1600) will place you in the top 25% of applicants for most Ivy League institutions, while SAT scores of 1450 will place you in the bottom 25% of applicants. Therefore, your SAT scores are extremely important.
Students with perfect scores must still compete with other applicants who have earned perfect or near-perfect scores in SAT.  It is possible to stand out from other qualified candidates by coupling high test scores with other marks of academic excellence.

How to have a productive study session.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When your finals are in 2 days, and you've definitely NOT studied enough, it's normal to panic. You sit down to study and get a solid 30 minutes of calculus done, then jump down the rabbit hole called YouTube. Soon enough the dread creeps up because you're still not done.
As a girl who doesn't attend school regularly due to coaching classes I go to (I'll expand on this later), it's pretty easy to forget to study for exams and projects.
But there's nothing better than getting 98% on that exam. So I'm writing this as someone who's been scoring straight As all my life. Here's how to have a productive study session:
Note: This isn't a guide for romanticising studies. This is meant for a serious, productive session. I will, however, be making a guide to help romanticise studies because I've found it helps a lot.
Before you study
Identify what your distractions are: Let's be real, almost everyone has their phone on hand during study sessions. Put your phone on Do Not Disturb and keep it in a corner of the room. Add a few selected contacts that can reach you while your phone is on DND. If you can turn off notifications entirely, do that.
Taking measures: After I keep my phone away, my brain turns to the next thing it could be distracted by. My laptop and tablet. Put those devices in focus mode, so you won't be tempted to use any other apps and use a Chrome extension like StayFocused or WasteNoTime to not get sidetracked.
Resources: Make sure you have all your material on hand. Video lectures, notes, guides, your formula sheet, and flash cards. Keep everything on hand so you won't have to rifle through papers to find that reference sheet.
Your space: Clean your desk. Keep only the things you need. Your pens and pencils, chargers, annotation material and water bottle. If you want, light a candle. Do not clutter it unnecessarily. Your desk is a sacred space. Treat it that way.
When you sit down
The checklist: Do you have all the material required? Electronics, chargers, a snack and a drink? Water bottle? Extra pen? If you have everything beforehand, you'll be less likely to lose focus because you forgot to charge your headphones.
Make a plan: I cannot stress this enough. You'll sit down and just start studying, and next thing you know, it's 7pm and all you've done is watch videos on celebrity drama. Make a goddamn plan. Write down a realistic number of chapters you can complete and then STICK TO IT.
Begin: Reread and review your notes. I usually like to rewrite my notes in neater handwriting, because my handwriting in class is appalling. To really solidify information, I recommend the 'Blurting' method. Read a paragraph, then close the book and say what you understood out loud. Reread to see what you missed and take note. I did this for my history exam and got a 100%. This shit works for a reason. Use the Pomodoro technique to maximise productivity. Set an alarm for 25 minutes, and do intensive study. Once that's done, take a 5-minute break. Return and repeat.
IMPORTANT
Take a break: Ah yes, if you don't get up every 40 minutes or so for a break, eventually whatever you're studying will start looking like garbage and you'll be back to square one. GET UP. Walk around. STRETCH. You've been looking like a croissant🥐. Eat something. Rehydrate.
Forgive yourself: If you couldn't hit your target, don't be harsh on yourself. Find out the cause: Were you distracted? Did something unavoidable come up? Then try to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Study buddy: This is a double-edged sword. Studying with a friend can either increase your productivity by a massive amount, or it can help you get absolutely zero work done. When revising with a friend, make sure you study with someone who has the same goals as you and won't get distracted by things.
It's 2023, procrastination is cancelled. Go drink some water, eat a granola bar and finish that assignment you've been delaying. Be the person who finishes all their work, on time and perfectly. You can do it.

Not my circus, not my monkeys.
Danny couldn’t believe it. He graduated high school with better grades than he imagined. Everything was also falling into place. His parents had accepted him as a halfa, and nothing bad has happened for almost a year now.
Well, he graduated, yes, but his grades weren’t on his sister’s level. Still, it was something he was proud of. Between making sure that Amity Park is safe from ghosts, going to Clockwork every now and then, and making sure he doesn’t fail at any of his classes, the road to a diploma was a hard one. (Although for some reason, the number of ghost attacks had gradually decreased until his usual rogues stopped attacking. They still visit Amity Park, but only to talk, hang out, or spar with him. It was strange at first, but he eventually got used to it.)
And now, in a few weeks, he is officially moving to Metropolis for college to become an engineer. It wasn’t what his younger self wanted, what with wanting to be an astronaut (not that he could be one, after what happened to him in the lab), but it was something more than what he thought he could ever accomplish.
(The deal-breaker was his parent's promise to protect Amity Park. He would have stayed and enrolled at Amity Community College, but his parents told him to live his life to the fullest.)
To celebrate their milestones together, Danny, Sam, and Tucker, together with Jazz as their chaperone for the summer, have decided to go wander around Metropolis and its neighboring cities as 'tourists' (Tucker and Sam had decided to go to Metropolis University, too, with the former studying Computer Science while the latter would take Journalism), partly because they will spend the rest of their college years in the city, and partly because compared to the other cities, Metropolis was safer because of Superman.
That means they can go anywhere and not fight.
'Not my circus, not my monkeys', as the saying goes.
Then Lex Luthor and Superman decided to duke it out in front of the Daily Planet, while the four of them were caught in a bank robbery.
The large LED TV inside the bank showcased the man of steel fighting the billionaire genius as the robbers scare everyone into submission with their guns.
The four of them looked at the LED TV, then at the robbers, and came to a decision.
-
Superman was in the middle of fighting Luthor when he heard the cries of various civilians, and a couple of criminals demanding a bank to let them in their vaults.
Then he heard gunshots.
Fearing for the worst, he quickly defeated Lex, told the cops to ship him back to prison, and flew to the bank, just to see a floating white-haired meta and a teenage girl conjuring plants tying up and freezing the robbers. In the corner was another boy typing on a PDA, and a red-headed girl comforting the other people in the bank.
The four people in question froze upon noticing Superman.
Two large vines immediately snatched the redhead and the other boy, while the white-haired meta phased them down the bank's floor.
So much for the saying, 'Not my circus, not my monkeys'.
 -
(This is terribly written. I haven’t done my research. Sorry for the quality of this short fic.)

What makes a school ivy league
The Ivy League is a group of eight of the most prestigious private universities in the United States. The term "Ivy League" originally referred to an athletic conference, but it now connotes prestige and selectivity. The acceptance to these schools is less than 12%, making them extremely competitive.
Furthermore, the main characteristic of these colleges is that it is more selective than other universities, and is often regarded as more prestigious. Universities in the Ivy League are typically hard to get into, but they are also good for your resume.
It's very likely that you will end up working in consulting or investment banking if you attend a high-ranking university. About 40 percent of Harvard graduates went into consulting or finance. The percentage remains the same or higher across the other Ivies.
This prestigious school is made up of Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and Penn, which are all known as the Ivy League because of their alliance.
These schools rank consistently among the top 20 national universities. According to U.S. News & World Report ranked
Princeton No. 1,
Harvard No. 2,
Both Columbia and Yale No. 3,
The University of Pennsylvania came in at No. 6,
Followed by Dartmouth at No. 12,
Brown at No. 14,
and Cornell at No. 17.
The College Admission Plan is intended for students who are looking for strategies to improve their SAT/ACT scores in a holistic manner to get best colleges in Texas
Tumblr media
Ideal ACT/SAT Scores for Ivy League School Applications
In general, you need a minimum ACT score of 31 to get into an Ivy League school. Some of these schools, including Harvard and Yale, require a score of 32.
A minimum SAT score of 690 to 730 for the reading portion of the test and 700 to 730 for the math portion is required to get into an Ivy League school. Getting 700 or 710 (or higher) on both of these sections will give you an advantage at most prestigious universities.
CAP center offers a unique admissions and counseling service and helps students choose the right school and Ivy League schools in Texas
Stress management techniques are employed by our team to deal with difficult situations. Formulates a Strategic Admission Plan. Students learn essential life skills that are necessary to live a successful life.

you ever wonder how henry remains clean-shaven. he can't do it with his powers or anything and like...i know brenner isn't trusting him with a razor (soteria, suicide, murder, etc).
so does he just have to sit there while one of the other orderlies does it for him like:
Tumblr media
who has the lovely job of playing the "keep-the-razor-away-from-001" game? is he just tied up? strong-armed into it? has he ever tried to bite someone during this procedure? has anyone lost a body part (ear, nose, etc) because of it? do they just sedate him for it? is he laying there knocked out like a feral cat getting its nails trimmed by a vet?
