CW: discussion of death and dying.
The gun was still on her hip when Lena walked into her penthouse. She probably should have gotten rid of it, just for the sake of disposing of evidence. It was far from the only one she owned, and she wouldn’t miss it. Then again, one does not discard lightly the weapon of fratricide. She’d decide what to do with the murder weapon later; right now, there was only one thought screaming in her head.
I killed Lex. I killed my brother.
It kept repeating in her brain on an endless loop.
I killed my brother for a liar. A betrayer. He was right and I was wrong. She only-
Lena was not alone. There was a figure seated on her sofa, staring straight ahead. Lena knew those blond curls, falling in a dark river like warm honey. Supergirl.
Supergirl, not Kara. Kara was good. Kara loved her, trusted her, watched out for her, had her back. Kara kept her secrets and gave her a shoulder to cry on always had her back. Kara was good, and Kara was a lie.
Lena walked around the couch, eyes wide and lips trembling, her features pulled into a mask of morose fury. How dare she just break in here and… sit there.
“I died.”
Lena froze.
“I died,” Supergirl said, again. “The clone of me that Lex had, she was a duplicate created by Harun-El somehow. She killed me. I died.”
Supergirl’s brilliant blue eyes flashed in the twilight of Lena’s dark apartment and locked on her.
“There was nothing. No warm light of Rao welcoming me home to live in peace with my people forever. No tunnel of light. There was just nothing. I was gone and then I wasn’t. Alex said the grass brought me back.”
Lena licked her lips. She was fixed to the spot.
“Why are you telling me this?”
“I’m Kara.”
Those two little words, those treacherous words, hit Lena like a freight train. Her knees buckled and she sagged, catching herself by an end table.
Kara met her gaze.
“There were a million reasons why I never told you. They’re all stupid and pointless. When I woke up that was the first thing I thought of. I died and I never told you.”
Lena tried to speak, but her throat had gone so dry that it was like trying to breath through a mournful of sand. She sagged further, barely able to fall into a side chair.
“At first I just didn’t know you well enough. Then I screwed everything up by being a complete ass to you, and I never even said I was sorry. But I was sorry. So I was too scared to tell you because I didn’t want you to hate me. Then by the time I wanted to tell you again, all of this had happened and I was still afraid you’d hate me.”
Kara looked down at the floor.
“But then I was dead and none of it mattered anymore. None of the things that had been important to me mattered when I was dying. You know what I was thinking as she crushed the life out of me?”
“No,” Lena choked out.
“This is it?” said Kara. “All that… and this is it? Just like that? This is all I get?”
Silence ruled the dark apartment. The back edge of Lena’s gun dug uncomfortably into her flank. Kara just sat there, looking through the floor. Perhaps literally.
“Kara,” Lena said, without quite knowing why. “I’m sure… you weren’t…”
“No, Lena, I died. It wasn’t like when Reign beat me to a pulp and threw me off a building. That was different. This was different. I can’t even say how. I just know.”
When Reign…
Lena had been there that night. Reign had beaten Supergirl into a coma, thrown her off a building and left her broken and bloodied in the street. Lena thought she’d died that night.
Wait.
That was Kara, too.
Sharp, rancid bile, harsh and acidic, burned the back of Lena’s throat. She choked it down, trembling.
Kara looked at her again.
“I have something else I have to tell you.”
Lena needed a drink. Now. She wobbled across the room to the kitchen and grabbed the nearest wine bottle, pouring herself a glass and downing half of it in one go. It was a dry red, harsh and sharp on her tongue.
“Kara,” Lena began. “Before you say anything else-“
“I’m in love with you.”
Lena wasn’t sure what she expected Kara to say, but not that. Not just… say it. She couldn’t say it. Not when Lena has been grasping that secret so hard that it always threatened to slip from her fingers, reedy to leap from her grip from being held so tight. The words simultaneously made her feel as if her heels would float from the floor and nearly drove her down to it. She leaned on the white marble countertop, trembling.
“None of the reasons I kept that secret matter anymore, either. It’s okay if you don’t feel the same way. I’ll leave if you want me to. I just… I died,” Kara’s voice crumbled into a sob, barely intelligible, “and I didn’t tell you.”
Lena said nothing. She downed the rest of the wine.
“What do you want from me?” She finally choked out.
“I want to tell you about Krypton. I want movie nights and game nights and big belly burgers and brunches. I want to kiss you. I want to kiss you so bad I don’t know how I never did. If you want that.”
Again, Lena went silent.
“I want to make up for the shit I’ve put you through. I want to show you how much I care for you, as often and as thoroughly as I can. Dying without you fucking sucked. I want to live with you instead.”
Lena’s breath quickened. Kara’s boots creaked as she stood up, her cape billowing slightly behind her as she crossed the room, keeping a respectful distance.
“I’ll go, if you want. I just had to say it.”
Lena pressed her fingers against the countertop until they went white and her palms trembled. She felt the weight of the gun on her hip.
“Stay,” she whispered.
There is no prompt for this one. The idea just came to me and I had to write it out.

Hey so this is kinda inspired by @virgamsysxvolumes lucky rush au but it's more my own twist on the bioshock inspiration. Actual prompt / idea below the cut
Ok so this would be a good parents au where Danny revealed himself to his parents shortly after the series (excluding phantom planet) and they were super supportive and asked for his help in learning more about ghosts. He also managed to track down Dani and brought her back to Amity only to learn that the ecto dejecto was only a quick fix. Eventually with Frostbites help they cure Dani but the only way is to essentially turn her into her core and let her form a new body in a special pod only she would be a baby. Now at first Jack and Maddie were going to fake a pregnancy and pretend she was Danny's and Jazz's sister however she and Danny bonded while they were looking for a cure and she accidentally called him Daddy. Danny was smitten and decided he would not pretend to be her brother and would be her dad.
The fentons pass it off as an invention gone weird that basically made a baby from Danny with no mother and Amity just shrugs at the Fenton weirdness and accept baby Dawn (She asked Danny to give her a new name before she was turned to a baby and I think that would be a cute name Danny would come up with.) Now 4 years later Danny is 19 or 20 and Dawn is 4 years old and Danny had been studying inventing like his parents and medicine from Frostbite. At Dawn's most recent check up Frostbite gave Danny one as well only to discover that Danny has been absorbing more ecto-energy than his core can handle because he is a primordial in the making (yes this is master of space Danny). So the solution to this is two-fold he has to move to another dimension with less ecto-energy and he has to where a special suit in his ghost form that frostbite and his parents made together. Which is this.
Tumblr media
Just without the drill and maybe a little more astronaut themed.
So eventually they pack up Danny and Dawn and find a new dimension with a city where they can live without people asking too many questions. Gotham city. With the number of vigilantes already there Danny won't feel obligated to go out and fight and he can finish his degree at Gotham U and start a business making and selling meta specialized medical equipment and other helpful inventions. (But no weapons.)
So Danny and Dawn with their new identities and parents/grandparents, aunts and uncles (blood and honorary) settle in pretty well with Danny and Dawn going out on moonlit walks in Ghost form. Thus the people of Gotham meet Big Daddy and his little starlight.
Now as for who I would ship with Danny I personally love DannyxCass or Dead silent as I think the current ship name for them is.
So maybe she meets the single dad Danny at college or at the park for the first time but they don't really hit it off until Danny signs Dawn up for a ballet class that Cass teaches.
Meanwhile Bruce and the more paranoid Bat's are trying to find out more about this tank like Meta that the public named big daddy (I imagine people heard Dawn calling him Daddy and No one ever asked his name so they start calling him that as a sort of meme) after he beat down a feral ManBat who tried to go after Starlight. (They heard Danny call her that in the suit and ran with it)
Basically we have creepy tank man and his glowing ghostly daughter on one side and sweet Cass and Danny romance with little gremlin Dawn trying to play matchmaker on the other.
Also what I think the other bat's think of Cass new boyfriend.
Dick is full overprotective big brother.
Jason after seeing the way that Danny is trying to help the underprivileged and the fact that they are like something out of a Hallmark movie ships it.
Tim is paranoid about this stranger and is back to his old habits(stalking) to find answers.
Steph is full Gung ho wing women she will be Cass bridesmaid God dammit.
Damien starts off hostile thinking there is no way he's good enough for his favorite sister until he meets Dawn and suddenly he is declaring that Cass needs to hurry up and marry him or else he will because he will have that adorable little girl in his family no matter what.
Duke is wary at first because he hadn't ever seen someone who glows as bright as Danny and Dawn but the more time he spends with them the more he realizes that the bright glow is a safe and protective aura and that it reaches out and covers everyone Danny cares about. (Danny has a ghostly aura he subconsciously covers people he cares about with that let's him react to danger faster)
Alfred is already planning out weddings and birthdays. He always expected Dick to be the first one to give him Great grand babies but he's not complaining.
Bruce much like Dick is full over protective dad maybe he even borrows one of Alfred's guns to try to intimidate Danny.
Barbara who is both a big sister figure and a almost mother like figure to Cass is absolutely delighted. (It doesn't hurt that Danny made a set of leg braces that can read nerves to allow her to walk naturally again without needing surgery)
Selina adores the two and thinks they make a cute couple.
Also I think it would be funny if after all of Bruce, Dicks, and Tim's paranoia Danny just strait up tells them that he is from another dimension and even offers to let them tag along on the next visit to his parents so they can do a proper background check (which freaks them out because they hadn't told him they were doing that. At least until while they are discussing it and if that was evidence that Danny is more than he appears Cass says she told him that they were doing a background check on him. Not that Danny didn't already know but it helps the suspicion.)
But yeah part neutral Meta and park Hallmark romance.
Also maybe a side plot of Jazz coming to this dimension and maybe she has a relationship with Supergirl because I haven't seen that before.

Entropy (part 1)
pair(s): Kara x Fifth Dimensional Imp!Reader, and all the other canon SG couples (Nia and Brainy, Kelly and Alex, etc)
content: slow burn ? but not really , hurt/comfort , eventual romance , wlw , kara x reader , reader needs therapy , reader is very socially anxious lmao
word count: 3,405
A/N: basically this whole thing is my HC's about the fifth dimension, mostly because of how vaguely it gets portrayed in supergirl! so yeah none of this is canon, I'm just making some stuff up as i go. I'd say that in my HCs the fifth dimension views the many earths as tv shows (like we see them, let's say), and maybe that's how Mxy found out about Kara in the first place! Also reader is fem presenting and uses She/Her pronouns!
As Cat Grant's new assistant, life wasn't easy, but you pulled through either way. You weren't Kara Danvers' assistant but Cat basically made you organize both schedules and bring her coffee even though Kara tried to reject it, she just didn't really like bossing people around, but as the new Editor in Chief of CatCo she needed to realize that she couldn't do everything on her own. Especially now that her secret was out there in the open.
You were Supergirl's biggest fan, watching her on TV and her adventures and her life for years. A while ago, a part of you just wished you could live in her dimension and be around her, especially after the finale of the show left you so unsatisfied. The fifth dimension has always been so boring, for some it's mind blowing and amazing, but as an Imp living by yourself in such a patriarchal society: it wasn't the best. And the third dimension just seemed so much easier, especially if you could use your magic to fix a few things here and there. However, migration laws were very strict unless you were married. And there was no way you'd marry some random guy for the rest of the eternity just to travel to another dimension. Your day-to-day activities were getting monotone and boring, your magic even seemed to weaken as your hopes and joy dissipated with each week passing by. Your parents always cared for you deeply, but they didn't understand you just wanted true freedom. If anything you wished Princess Nyxlygsptlnz could've gotten the AllStone totems and finally overthrow King Brpxz, this dimension really needed a new governor, but sure Kara didn't see that. All she was focused on was in stopping Nyxly, not questioning what she wanted the totems for.
But you still admired her and her adventures, ever since she came to earth her life was basically a reality show for the fifth dimension, you were surprised when Mxyzptlk appeared in season two. Everyone knew him, he was kinda like a celebrity but not the good kind. You immediately realized he even changed his appearance to woo Kara into falling for him, he was definitely the product of this ugly environment. It made you so happy to see how Kara defeated him by making him write his name backwards in Kryptonian. And then he appeared... Again? Now he was a good guy, good for him, sure. But something just made you feel so jealous. The fact that he got to freely travel around any dimensions like any other male Imp can, you just wished you were better at magic so you could at least fool some guards to leave. You felt hopeless for so long...
That until one night you were sitting on the floor in your living room, rewatching Supergirl, a wish came out of your mouth softly.
"I wish I could meet Kara..." You whispered as the intro of the show played in your giant orb. Usually your mumbles and whispers would go unnoticed by your family, and this one did, but something else noticed it. A bright blue light flooded the room, making you teleport to behind your couch immediately. When the light softened you peeked your head, glaring at the orb that was now just glowing with many little blue lights dancing inside of it, like they wanted to escape. You sat back down and took a deep breath.
"What are we hiding from?" You heard a familiar voice by your side, scaring the living crap out of you.
Yelling you immediately teleported back to where you were sitting, the unknown man got up, finally revealing himself.
"Hi! I'm Mxyzptlk, but my friends call me Mxy." He gave you a mischievous smile and handed you a small card.
"DUDE FUCK YOU!" You pushed him away, still terrified as you ran to the kitchen to get your parents.
"HEY! Mind your manners! I was just driving by the neighborhood and heard a pure hearted wish, and who am I to deny a wish to someone so awesome?" He was now sitting on the kitchen counter, eating an apple as he spoke to you.
"What do you want from me? Huh?" You walked backwards until you were back at the kitchen door, not taking your eyes off of him.
"So... My friend, Kara Danvers. She needs help, not urgent help, but she needs... A new perspective. Lena Luthor left to find more about her mom and practice magic, so Kara is really lonely, and her life isn't going really well. She just needs a new someone in her life, even if it's just a friend." His words were confusing, was he trying to be a wingman for you?
"How the fuck do you know me-"
"Language!" He spoke from behind you, making you turn around to face him. "So I'm friends with you dad and he keeps complaining about how you can't find a good husband and other stuff. My past self would've helped him, but instead I want to help you. As you may know I can travel through dimensions freely, so, I want to give you a chance. And I know you're a Supergirl fan." He mischievously pointed to the paused episode in your orb. You knew Mxyzptlk had changed over the years, but you still were unsure.
"What am I supposed to do? Once I get to the third dimension?" You asked hesitantly as you walked back to the living room, staring at your orb.
"So... You can't use your magic-" Your head snapped towards him, was he serious? If anything you needed your magic there! It was way more powerful in lower dimensions.
"Nope. Declined." You plopped down on your couch, crossing your arms over your chest as he sat down right by your side.
"Listen! Kara's friends can track fifth dimensional energy. If they find you like that they'll think you're like Nyxly or something and you'll be in trouble." You gave him a mean side eye as you thought about it. "I'll make some arrangements and find you a Job at CatCo and a nice apartment at Kara's building. If you want to, you can later tell her the truth, but she really needs something new in her life, and I think it'd benefit both you and her." He held your hands in his, giving you puppy eyes which made you creep out and snap your hands out of his grasp.
"And how do I know you're the real Mxyzptlk and not some scammer?" You cocked an eyebrow at him.
"I guess you'll just have to trust me." He gave you a smile and you rolled your eyes, just trying to recall how to say your own name backwards just in case this freak was an imposter. You knew your dad was acquaintances with Mxy back in his bad years but you never thought they were that close.
"Fine." You shook his hand and in that moment your orb glowed again, forcing you to close your eyes, and when you opened them you suddenly were all by yourself in an apartment, very similar to Kara's but yours was decorated in a more cold color palette (mostly blues and purples). And you had way less furniture. Still shocked, not knowing how you could check whether or not this was the third dimension you walked around, it sure was made to your liking, although it needed some more furniture. Taking a deep breath you felt the fifth dimension stronger than ever, yes, this was it. Excitedly you self toured your apartment, finding everything unpacked as if you've been living here for months already, except for a few boxes all around the house, to give the impression that you were a brand new neighbor. And a handwritten note by Mxyzptlk on the front door.
"Kara is your next door neighbor, and you'll have a job interview at CatCo tomorrow, good luck. :) -Mxy"
Your smile grew bigger as you finally got the new life you've been begging for so long.
[Now back to the present]
After three months on the third dimension one thing was sure: You were tired. Not being able to use your magic meant a lot of walking and a lot of carrying things around, but you were getting the hang of it. Although you haven't mustered the courage to take any steps with Kara. You could usually hear her and her friends having fun on game night or whenever she sobbed loudly while watching Wizard of Oz, but she never realized you were her neighbor. And at work it was pretty much the same, she'd just say 'Hi', 'Thanks' 'Goodbye' to you, she didn't even know your name. Most of your day to day conversations were with Cat Grant, who didn't even get your name right, but she was sweet deep inside. She even reminded you of your own mother. And by now you knew her favorite meals and every single specification about them, and you also knew Kara's favorite coffee but you weren't going to reveal you knew that one from 'the show'.
Your day-to-day now was basically just staring at Kara from your desk and sketching little drawings of her face or daily outfits on post-it notes that you kept underneath your keyboard. And that's what you were doing until Cat sneaked behind you and almost made you fall off your chair.
"Oh, so you're an artist?" She spoke loudly as she leaned over to have a better view of your little sketch.
"Miss Grant!" You yelped, turning your chair around so it'd block the view from your computer. "Is there anything I can help you with?" Your heart was beating loudly while you stared at the woman who was towering over you while squinting her eyes.
"You have a crush on Kara? Woah, what a shocker." She rolled her eyes as she walked to the new office that was built just for her weeks ago, right where the superfriends used to meet in season one.
You immediately got up and nervously walked behind her, you knew nothing escaped Cat, you saw how she knew all along Kara's identity, but you didn't expect this to happen to you.
"No, no- Miss Grant, I just usually draw what I see, it's a hobby, I've even drawn you and other colleagues here and not only Miss Danvers. I even draw animals sometimes!"
She stopped on her tracks, making you accidentally bump against her back. You quickly took two steps back and began apologizing profusely until she raised a finger, a clear signal for you to shut up.
"I'll help you. Kara needs someone. If only you could hear how she whines for that Luthor girl you'd go crazy. Plus from what I've seen you have a nice personality. And you're not ugly... I'll see what I can do for you, now bring me a cheeseburger from Noonan's. I'm giving myself a treat for being so generous." You silently nodded as she gave you a company credit card, your whole face blushing while you walked to the elevator. Said elevator was about to close when you heard a woman yell for someone to stop it, so you did. And you realized how bad your luck could get, because out of ALL the people in this office it had to be Kara Danvers the one inside the elevator with you.
You tried to play it cool as you stared at the panel in front of you, trying to not attract her attention.
"Did Cat send you on a random quest?" She spoke cheerfully after a couple seconds, making your heart race again.
"Yeah- No-... I mean- Kind of...? She wants a cheeseburger."
"No onions, extra pickles, and just a tiny dot of mustard right in the middle-" You both spoke at the same time, then stared at each other silently. That until Kara broke the silence with the most beautiful laughter you've ever heard, so much it made you laugh too.
"You're great, it took me a bit to memorize all that." She complimented you as she gave you a bright smile.
"Thanks... It's good to hear that from Miss Danvers herself, you were a hero before being Supergirl just by working for Cat." Now you fired back, also smiling at her as you felt butterflies flying though all of your body.
"I have to admit, Lex Luthor was easier to deal with." She joked as the elevator doors opened, making you realize the nice moment was over, it made your smile fade slightly as you both hopped off. You just waved at Kara as you took a step towards the restaurant. "Uhm- Actually, I was going to get lunch for myself, if you want I can get you something too." She stopped you by putting her hand on your shoulder.
"Oh no! There's no need, I don't-"
"C'mon! I can give you more Cat Tips, I invented them when I found Cat the first replacement assistants." She gave you that sweet smile again, almost making you melt and you just nodded. The two of you got to Noonan's quickly and it was fairly empty, which was good because usually you knew people would just get all around Kara to ask her questions, but now it was just you two, maybe six to seven people eating on their respective tables, and the workers.
"I'd like a dozen donuts and my regular coffee and for the lady right here..." She turned around to you, making you snap back to reality.
"U-Uh... A slice of chocolate cake will be fine." You gave her a wobbly smile as you fidgeted with the credit card in your hand.
"Are you sure? Please don't worry, it's all on me. Or maybe we can order some sushi? Nia told me she was craving some..."
"I- I'll order Cat's food and then we can go from there." You took her out of her thoughts, she just nodded while you turned around to the worker and placed Cat's order, which was ready almost instantly along with Kara's and your cake slice, all to go.
The two of you kept making small talk as you headed back to the office, you felt bad having to excuse yourself but you knew Cat Grant cannot wait.
"Here's your food Miss Grant." You put the paper bag on her desk and as you were walking out you heard her voice again.
"W/n. Where's my drink? I clearly asked you for a sparkling water." No she didn't, but you felt your face go pale as you remembered she had specific drinks for each food item. If you weren't so distracted by Kara maybe you would have remembered that, but now you only had two options: Owning up to your mistakes or... No. You couldn't do that. If you did there was a very high risk of the superfriends finding you and thinking you may be hostile. Or maybe the DEO, you didn't knew if it was already built back yet.
Either way it was risky... But it was just sparkling water, how much magic would you need for that? Probably the slightest bit, and maybe it'd go unnoticed by their sensors. Plus if you got fired you didn't want it to be over water. Breathing deep you snapped your fingers softly, the sparkling water appearing on your hands with a blue shine right before you turned around.
"Sorry! I was so distracted I forgot to hand it to you." You smiled nervously as you gave the woman the plastic bottle which she examined briefly, giving you a quick hand gesture which meant you were free to go now. That was definitely a stressful moment, but since you didn't see any of the superfriends around the building other than Kara chatting with Nia at her office you felt safe. Maybe this meant you could do some other tricks here and there, you just had to be careful, right?
[Meanwhile in the tower.]
Brainy was simply checking that everything was alright that day, then he'd go to buy Nia some lunch and take it to CatCo, an easy plan right? Unless something like the little alert on his screen ruined it.
"Hey, has anybody talked to Mxy lately?" Brainy turned on his comm device, sending the message to everyone.
He just got negative responses from everyone, which made him even more worried, this spark of fifth dimensional energy seemed so powerful yet it was so brief. Like it had been charging for a long time waiting to be let loose. And that wasn't a good sign, especially without Mxyzptlk around.
"I got a fifth dimensional energy signal coming from... CatCo. Nia, Kara I'm on my way, try searching the building but silently, we don't want to cause panic." He immediately turned on his image inductor and flew to CatCo, landing on the heliport and being greeted by his blonde friend.
"I searched the whole building, twice, and didn't find anything. Nia is in my office trying to see if she can dream about who's our fifth dimensional suspect." Kara was unconsciously doing the Supergirl pose although she was still wearing her usual office clothes, her face scrunched in worry.
"Okay... We need to see if it was Mxy, so we need to-"
"Mr. Mxyzptlk!" Kara yelled into the sky above, and the man appeared right beside them.
"You don't need to yell, bestie. I'm literally right here." He pretended to clean his ear with his pinky as he turned around to see Kara and Querl.
"We got a fifth dimensional energy signal here in CatCo. Was it you?" Brainy asked still deadpanning Mxyzptlk as the Imp's face seemed to go pale.
"Uh- Yeah! Of course. I was about to give Kara a visit but I saw how busy she was so I just left immediately. I was actually on my way back to the fifth dimension. My mom hasn't seen her favorite son in a while. Goodbye!" The man didn't even let them speak before snapping his fingers and disappearing, leaving both Kara and Brainy really confused yet somehow relieved by the fact the energy wasn't anything dangerous, allegedly.
"Kara... I think he's lying. It wasn't like his usual energy. This was a spark of colossal fifth dimensional energy, something like turning a switch on and off very quickly, usually Mxyzptlk hangs around leaving large trails of fifth dimensional energy, this isn't like him."
"We'll get to the bottom of this, I promise. Meanwhile... I think Nia may be hungry, what if we all go to eat something?" Kara suggested, laying her hand on the man's shoulder as he still looked unsure about the whole situation, but the Coluan just nodded, following Kara back to her office.
[...]
You sat down on your desk eating the slice of cake Kara had bought for you, smiling as you felt like your day was getting slightly better, especially since Cat Grant hasn't had the need to yell your name in the past thirty minutes or so. You finally felt like your life was going smoothly. Maybe Mxyzptlk was really a good man. Closing your eyes while enjoying one of the last bites of your cake you opened them just to find yourself sitting inside a broom closet. Confused, you immediately got up and looked around in the darkness until someone turned on the lights.
"I told you not to use your magic!" It had to be him.
"Hey! Don't yell at me! I wasn't using my magic, I was just eating my cake, which if you excuse me I might buy myself another slice." You tried to open the door but it was locked. "Mxyzptlk..." Looking back at him he just gave you a worried look.
"Please, Y/n. Don't use your magic until you gain Kara's trust. That's all I ask you for, especially since you could literally go to jail-" He then covered his own mouth, and turned around, his back facing you.
"WHAT- JAIL?!" Your jaw was on the floor, he surely had some explaining to do.
"Okay so- Maybe I... Broughtyouhereillegallysoifthesupremecourtfindsoutyou'reherewebothmayendupinjailandthatwouldn'tbereallynice-" He finished his sentence by gasping for air loudly, then he snapped his fingers and suddenly you were back on your desk, your mind still wondering how the fuck did you get into all this.

Broken Steel
Kara is having panic attacks and is determined to find out who’s causing them. Almost 3k. Kara really just needs a hug and therapy. 💛

"Oh no," Kara whispered as the door locked behind her. "It's okay. You'll be okay," she mumbled to herself.
Kara took a deep breath and focused on the reason she went into the supply closet in the first place. She fumbled around for the ream of printer paper until she finally found it hiding behind the toner.
"Gotcha! Now to get out of here."
Kara turned around to open the door, but the handle wouldn't budge.
"Shoot."
Kara jiggled it and pulled on it but nothing worked. She'd blown her powers out, so she couldn't 'accidentally' break the door. She just had to sit and wait for someone to find her.
"Okay Kara. You can do this. Just breathe. Focus on what Harley taught you."
Kara took a deep, diaphragmatic breath in, held it for seven counts, and let it out for eight. She repeated it over and over, but the panic still rose within her.
At somepoint she ended up on the floor, hugging her knees to her chest. The walls were closing in, and it felt like she would be stuck there forever.
"No Kara. You're not in the pod. It'll be okay. Just breathe." Kara squeezed her head tight, begging her mind to focus on something, anything else.
"Come on Kara. You should be over this. You're the Girl of Steel, and you can't handle a closet?" Kara chastised. She dug her finger nails into her temporarily human skin.
Tears were threatening to fall when the door opened behind her.
"Kara!" Winn exclaimed. "Are you okay?"
He reached out his hand and helped her up. Kara brushed off her skirt and wiped her eyes.
"Huh? Oh I'm fine," Kara lied. "Just had a little trouble with the door. Someone she really fix that."
Kara walked off without saying another word. She didn't go back for the paper.

The elevator ride that night after work was the longest of Kara's life. She fiddled with the end of her shirt and rubbed her hands together. If she had her powers she would've just flown home, but she couldn't. And after having to walk everywhere all day, Kara was too exhausted to take 15 flights of stairs. Although right now, she was beginning to rethink it.
When the elevator dinged and the doors finally opened, Kara tore out of there. She ran into the empty street and enjoyed the open air. Despite how exhausted she was, Kara walked all the way home.
***
'What's going on? Why can't I move?' Kara thought to herself as she opened her eyes to total darkness. She felt like she was floating; she felt sick to her stomach.
'Not this again,' she grumbled. 'Alright. Breathe. You can do this.'
Kara maintained steady breathing as she drifted aimlessly through space. A bright light appeared in the corner of her eye. She turned her head. Suddenly she could see every detail in high definition.
'I'm- I'm in the pod? As an adult. Wait what was that flash? Where am I? Why can't I move!'
Kara's breath picked up and she whipped her head around, only adding to her nausea. She located a familiar white moon and a bright yellow sun.
'NOOOO!' Kara screamed as she watched her planet explode for a second time. Tears streamed down her face as she mourned the loss of her new home: Earth.
***
Kara woke up hyperventilating, her body covered in sweat. She looked around and realized she was in her room, on Earth.
'It was just a dream. Well, a nightmare,' Kara thought to herself.
She flung what's left of the covers off the bed and sat up. She stretched and accidentally got a whiff of her fresh sweat.
'Guess I'm gonna shower now.'
Kara got up and headed to the bathroom. She stopped in the doorway, staring at the small room.
'It's okay. You can do this. You're not in the pod. You're not in the closet. You can leave whenever you want.'
Kara took a deep breath and stepped into the bathroom. She left the door open.
***
Kara spent the whole day ready to fly through a wall at a moments notice. She nearly punched Winn when he came up and tapped her on the shoulder.
'Get it together Kara,' she chastised herself. 'You aren't under attack. Relax dammit!'
Kara took a few deep breaths and broke the mouse in her hand.
'Dang it.'
Kara looked around the office to see if she could get some intern to get a new mouse for her; it was empty.
'Okay. Guess this is a job for Supergirl.'
Kara tried to laugh at her bad joke, but it didn't help. She made her way to the supply closet and stood at its door.
'It's just a closet Kara. Prop the door open. Find the mouse. Get out. You've done it a hundred times. You can do it again.'
Kara just stood staring at the open door. She focused only on her breathing, blocking out all other sounds.
"Whatcha staring at?" Nia asked.
Kara jumped a foot in the air and nearly fell over.
"Nia!" Kara shouted. "Don't. Scare me like that."
Kara struggled to regain her breath.
"Sorry?"
Nia looked at Kara and asked "are you okay?" She then whispered "I thought you had super hearing."
"I do!" Kara replied, louder than necessary. "I was just- focused on something else."
"Alright..." Nia looked at her again but brushed it off. "So what were you staring at?"
"Oh. Right. I was.... Looking for a mouse! For my computer. Oh I just remembered I have to do something," Kara lied. "Would you do me a favor and get me one?"
Nia looked at Kara's trembling hands, but didn't push it.
"Sure. Go do your thing and I'll have the mouse waiting on your desk."
"Thank you Nia! You're the best."
Kara gave Nia a tight hug before dashing off.
'Time to go check on an old friend.'
***
Kara landed outside the DEO and marched her way to her 'old friend'.
"How are you doing it?" Kara asked as she slammed on the wall.
"Well isn't it my luck. The birdy has decided to visit the cat."
"Answer me!" Kara demanded. The glass started to crack.
"I don't know what you're talking about!" Psi shouted.
"How did you get in my head? How come I feel this fear in every bone in my body? What did you do to me!"
"Nothing silly bird." Psi backed away from the glass and sat on the bench. "I haven't been able to do anything since you put this stupid lock on me. Not to mention the 24/7 surveillance keeping me from escaping."
Kara's eye twitched and she clenched her fist.
"It sounds to me like the birdy has some problems she can't solve. Sad how easy it is to break the Girl of Steel."
Kara punched the glass; it almost broke. "You better not be behind this," she threatened. "And you better pray I find the person behind this!" Kara shouted as she walked out the room, her hand twitching.
'Dammit,' Kara muttered as she rubbed her sore hand. 'I really thought she was behind this. shirt! It's game night.'
Kara flew out the window to get her apartment ready for her friends.
***
"Damn Kara. I can't believe you won again!" Lena exclaimed, gently punching her shoulder.
"Don't feel bad. No one has dethroned this queen in quite some time," Kara boasted, making broad royal gestures.
"I remember when you first came to Earth and didn't know what uno was. I miss that."
Kara shot Alex a glare and Alex stuck her tongue out.
"Has anyone thought about Kara using her x-ray vision?" Lena piped in.
The group collectively turned and stared at her. Kara's eyes flashed red.
"I'm just saying, she doesn't have her glasses on. They're leadlined, right?"
"Yes I do believe that Lena is correct." Brainy turned and stared at Kara.
"Fine." Kara swung around and put her glasses on. "You want to test it? Let's go. Rematch. Glasses, on."
The room was dead silent, everyone waiting for Lena's response.
"Deal. Get ready to lose, Kara Zor-el."
"It's on, Lena Luthor."
The rest of the room joined in the next game, but no one was surprised it was down to Lena and Kara.
"Uno," Lena flirted. She held up her card for everyone to see.
Kara didn't respond. She placed a plus 4, which made the room gasp. Lena grumbled as she drew four more cards.
"Red."
Lena grumbled again.
Kara slowly got through her hand until only 2 cards remained. Lena placed down a card and smirked.
"Uno!" Kara called out, beating Lena to it. Lena drew four cards.
"Do you want to keep going? Or will you just admit defeat and bow down to your Queen." Kara made another regal gesture with her hands, being very careful to keep her cards hidden.
"Never," Lena snarled.
Kara placed down a card.
"Uno." She mocked Lena's move from merely a few minutes ago. Kara prayed no one could see her sweating.
"fork," Lena mumbled, placing down a red 5.
Kara smirked. She placed down a blue 5.
"I win," Kara boasted. "Still think I cheated?" Kara asked as she played with the glasses sitting on her face.
"No," Lena mumbled. She was in full pout.
"Face it Lena," Kara started as she walked over to where Lena sat. "No one can dethrone the queen."
Lena looked up into Kara's eyes and Kara felt heat rise to her face. Her hands started to sweat, for a different reason than before. Kara knew she was blushing.
"Alright!" Alex shouted. "Let's play a different game."
Kara looked to Alex and gave her a silent thanks.
Kara scurried away from Lena and Winn pulled out a different game. Kara wasn't paying attention to his choice; she was stuck in her thoughts.
'Why did Lena think I was cheating? Does she not trust me? Does everyone else think that? And why was I blushing?'
"Are you okay with what Winn chose, Kara?" Nia asked.
"Huh? Yea. That's fine."
Kara glanced around as everyone started picking their pieces.
'Of course he'd choose monopoly. He insists on playing it everytime. Even though he always gets out first.'
Kara rubbed her arm slowly as the game started. She rolled the dice and went through the motions, using her standard tactic of buy everything she lands on. She took some deep breaths, but nothing seemed to help her calm down.
"Hey," Kara interjected. "Is anyone else hot?"
She looked around at the sea of shaking heads.
'Oh. So it's just me. Get it together idiot. It's just game night. There's nothing to be on edge about.'
Kara continued playing. She nearly broke the table when she landed in jail for the third time in a row.
"Oh come on!" Kara shouted as she slammed her piece on the corner spot.
"Kara, are you okay?" Lena asked.
"I'm fine. Go enjoy boardwalk and probably win this stupid game."
"Kara. What's wrong?" Kelly asked, taking note of the unusual behavior.
"I said I'm fine!" Kara yelled. She brought her knees to her chest and hugged them tight.
The game continued.
'Dammit Kara. Get it together. They're just worried about you. Why are you upset? Why are you attacking your friends? They just want to help.'
"I'm gonna go get a drink. I'll be right back." Kara stood up and left the table, not waiting for a response.
"Can you grab me a coke!" James shouted.
"Uh, sure!" Kara replied from inside the fridge.
'This is nice. I could just stay here for a while.' Kara rummaged through the fridge for James's coke. She found one burried deep in the back and pulled it out. She walked back to the table.
"Here ya go," Kara said as she handed James the coke.
"Thanks." He grabbed it and set it on the table. "Weren't you going to get something?" James asked.
"Huh?" Kara mumbled as she sat down. "Oh... I uh, changed my mind?"
No one questioned it.
"Your turn." Nia handed Kara the dice.
"Finally!" Kara shouted. She rolled doubles.
The game continued without a hitch, until Kara landed on boardwalk.
"Oh come on!" Kara exclaimed. "It can't possibly be that much!"
"3 houses Kara. Fork it over." Lena held out her hand for the money.
"Alright alright. Just give me a second."
Kara felt everyone's eyes fixed on her as she rummaged about for her money. The room was silent. Everyone was waiting on her.
'Come on Kara. Hurry up. Just admit you don't have enough and forfeit.'
Kara's hands started to shake.
'No, it'll be fine. I just, need a minute to think.'
'They're all waiting on you. Your slowing down game night. Just end it. They don't want to be with you anyways.'
'That's, that's not true.'
Kara's breathing sped up.
'Yes it is. You know it is. They're just pitying you. The poor little alien with nowhere else to go. They don't want to be with you. They don't like you. Who would possibly want to hang out with a lost alien who's parents didn't even want her.'
"Stop it!" Kara shouted. She brought her hands up to her head and started rocking back and forth.
The room started to spin. She could hear every little beep of a microwave, every pet scratching at a door, every scream from her dying planet.
"Make it stop. Please. Everyone just stop."
Tears streamed down Kara's face. She continued rocking and pushing her hands into her head, trying to stop the noise.
"shirt." Alex ran to Kara's room without another word.
"Kara are you okay?"
"Try to take some deep breaths."
"You're safe here."
"It's okay Kara. Breathe."
Kara continued rocking back and forth. Her thoughts swirled about in her head, one insult after another.
"Everyone stop," Alex stated as she ran out of Kara's room. She was holding something in her hand.
Alex knelt down next to Kara and held up the earmuffs. She slowly pulled Kara's hands away from her head; Kara didn't resist. Alex slid the muffs over Kara's ears and pulled her sister into a tight hug.
'It stopped. Why did it stop? What's going on?'
Kara took a slow, deep breath, and let herself be hugged by Alex.
'Oh.'
Kara's tears slowly stopped falling as Alex rubbed small circles into her back, never letting go. Kara eventually opened her eyes and spoke.
"Thank you, Alex." She hugged her sister back.
"You okay now?" Alex asked, still hugging her.
"Yea. Thank you."
"Anytime." Alex gave her a tight squeeze before finally letting go.
Kara felt sick as she realized all of her friends just witnessed her total breakdown.
"So uh. That happened," Kara laughed, trying to brush it off.
"Do you want to talk about?" Kelly asked. "Only if you want to."
"Well um, you guys deserve to know..."
Kara rubbed her arm and looked to Alex.
"She had a panic attack."
The room stopped and stared at the Danvers sisters.
"I used to get them a lot when I first came to Earth, after... Well after everything. I uh. I haven't had one since Psi showed up..."
"Kara is claustrophobic, which usually is what triggered it," Alex explained.
"Is that why I found you staring at the closet?" Nia asked, concerned for her friend.
Kara nodded, but couldn't bare looking at her.
"Sometimes," Alex continued. "sounds and noise cause it, which is why I got the special earmuffs Dad made for her."
"Jeremiah knew I struggled with my powers." Kara looked up and smiled. "He made me these glasses, so I could control my x-ray vision. He also made a few pairs of earmuffs that keep me from hearing anything. I forgot I even had them, until now..."
"Kara," Kelly started. "This is nothing to be ashamed of."
Kara looked up at Kelly, tears forming in her eyes.
"But I'm the Girl of Steel. I can't just break because the microwave keeps beeping."
"But you're also a person." Kelly came over and put her hands on Kara's. "You deserve as much as help as you give others. You don't have to do this alone."
Kelly squeezed Kara's hands, and Kara looked her in the eyes.
"You sure?" She asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm not disappointing anyone?"
"No Kara," Kelly answered. "You're not a disappointment."
"We love you" Alex said as she pulled Kara into a hug. "All of us do."
"I'm impressed with how well you've handled everything," Lena chimed in. Everyone turned and looked at her. "I'm just saying! I turn to the bottle every other night, and I'm not the last daughter of an entire planet."
Everyone laughed at Lena's statement and Kara gave a slight smile.
"If there's anything we can do, please let us know." Nia smiled over at Kara.
"I uh," Kara stammered. "Maybe a group hug?"
Immediately, everyone surrounded her and squished her in the middle of all their love and support (and their arms). She was squished up next to Lena and couldn't help but blush. Tears fell onto Lena's shirt as Kara's walls came crashing down. For the first time since she got to Earth, Kara let herself break.
***
After the tears stopped falling, everyone returned to game night and the rest of the night was filled with joy and laughter. Kelly talked to Kara about joining her PTSD program, to go along with her regular therapy. After a moment's hesitation, Kara agreed.
Weeks passed and Kara started feeling better. She kept an eye out for whoever was causing the breakdowns, but she couldn't find anything, or anyone.
'Maybe Psi was right...'

Feel like this is an underrated scene…especially bc it cut from them hugging to brainy talking about the villain showing up, which was like 20 seconds later.
Like they seemed awful comfy hugging for that long in front of a whole crowd of people…just saying

"In many ways, the cosmos are Kara’s Kryptonite—her home and yet it hurts. Like memories you hoard but can barely stand to think upon." Damn, I love your essays. Every. Single. Word. So glad you noticed (of course you did) Kara's painting of the light in the dark void. I have a feeling Kara was awake or on some level aware in the Phantom Zone for far longer than anyone would ever guess. Could they do an entire ep that's just Kara talking to a DEO therapist about these issues?
Wow, thank you so much!
I, too, subscribe to the idea that Kara was awake on some level for a long time in the Phantom Zone. Not that she needs more issues, my god, but it’s so compelling an idea and the foundation for it is certainly there in canon.
And I cherish every scrap of mental health info for Kara, every time they address her issues in any way, so I’d probably be absolutely overloaded in the best way if she actually saw a therapist.
That being said, shows don’t typically go for the therapy route. Which bothers people because it’s not a great message, but I can see why it happens.
In a lot of ways, fiction /is/ therapy. For the characters, for the writers, and for the audience.
Through the characters, writers both send the world messages, teaching them moral and personal and political messages (acting as the therapist themselves), and work through their own issues. Even if the writer isn’t fully aware that’s what they’re doing.
(Every book is a diary if you know how to read it.)
And the characters themselves… well, the universe functions as their therapist. Challenging them, guiding them to understanding and growth. Why would you have your protag see a therapist for something if they’re going to work out that issue themselves in a dramatic moment you’ve been building up to at the end of the 3rd book?
There’s certainly a way to do it without compromising your story, but therapy isn’t something every writer is familiar with. There are a lot of misconceptions they’d probably have to get past before being open to the idea for their characters. And then they’d have to figure out what kind of role it actually plays in the story and to what degree.
So it’s not likely that we’ll see Kara sit down with a therapist concerning her current issues. She’ll probably work through her issues in other, plotty ways as the seasons go on.
But there’s certainly a message of “you need to talk about this with someone,” which is nice. Who knows, maybe Brainiac 5 will drop a line about being a certified psychiatric doctor because of his 12th level intellect tonight while he’s trying to help Kara out of her mind-prison.
Of course, I’d love for fans to treat Kara and therapy like other possible future plot points. Maybe warm them up to the idea.
We’re at a panel and they’re expecting us to ask about the legion or a possible upcoming villain from the comics or a love interest or something, but instead:
“Sooooo, can you give us any hints about if we’ll be seeing a…mental health professional appear on the show in the near future??”
