okay this got a little angsty? sorry I started thinking about 2017 lashton. Also! I went with the second one because this one has a little bit of a “teaching Luke to cook” vibe

laston: doing something for them because their hands are full

Ashton grabs both of the grocery bags before Luke can unbuckle his seatbelt.

"I can take one," he says after he closes the trunk, holding out his hands.

"I've got it," Ashton says, because he still has a complex where he feels the need to be an caregiver and a protector and feel like he's providing for Luke.

Honestly, the vast majority of the time Luke doesn't mind, especially when he feels like he can give back by working through the tense muscles of Ashton's shoulders and back most nights before bed. He likes feeling taken care of, and he knows that Ashton needs to feel like he's taking care. It's why he moved in with Ashton in the first place when things got bad, and why they were even able to help each other. He loves Michael and Calum, but if he had gone to either of them he would have just drained them, and if Ashton had gone to them they would have felt smothered and he would have felt helpless.

They're both doing better now. Luke doesn't cry as much, and Ashton spends less time retreating into himself and hiding what he really feels from the world. They've been able to write a bit and feel proud of what they've created so far. He knows that they're not fully healed, knows that the thought of moving out and losing this codependent rhythm they've fallen into fills him with so much fear he hyperventilates, but they're getting there. He's still allowed to let Ashton take care of him, and Luke can pay him back in other ways.

If Ashton wants to be a Strong Man and carry the groceries, that's fine.

"Can you get the door?" Ashton asks, like Luke was going to just stand there on the front stoop and watch him struggle. He reaches into Ashton's front pocket, because he left his keys inside, and is fumbling for the right key when Ashton's phone rings.

"Shoot, that's probably Cal. We're trying to coordinate lunch."

"Want me to answer?" Luke asks.

"If you don't mind."

Luke fishes the phone out of Ashton's back pocket and swipes to answer, balancing it between his shoulder and ear while he actually unlocks the door and lets them both in. Ashton heads straight for the kitchen to start unloading.

"Hey, Cal."

"Oh, hey Luke. How's it going?"

"Pretty good. Ashton's got the groceries, which is why he didn't answer."

Calum hums and continues the small talk while Luke takes off his shoes and moves to the kitchen, working around Ashton is a practiced dance until all of the groceries are in their proper place. He gets to keep talking to Calum until Ashton takes off his shoes and comes back for the phone, and it's nice. He should be sure they have a moment to hang out soon. Since they got off tour what feels like a lifetime ago, Luke has found himself missing Calum and Michael like another limb, but at least he still has Ashton in close quarters.

He listens as Ashton wanders to his room, the sound of his voice fading with distance, then flops down on the couch and pulls out his own phone, although he doesn't open it. It reminds him of how easy it was to take Ashton's phone and answer it for him, to take the keys directly from his pocket to unlock the door to what he's come to think of as their home, although it isn't. It's Ashton's house, first and foremost, and Luke is only a guest. This was never meant to be a permanent solution, just a band-aid because they both needed someone there while they figured things out.

It doesn't feel like that, though. It feels like he and Ashton make a good team, like they're two pieces of the same puzzle. Ashton can carry the groceries and Luke will open the door and answer his phone. Ashton can make sure he eats and Luke will pull him out when he gets too deep in his own head. Ashton can wipe away his tears and Luke will hold him when he feels lonely and unloved, because sometimes he feels lonely and unloved too. They have a good system going, and now that Luke's had a taste he doesn't want to give it up.

He doesn't want to give Ashton up.

i’ve been thinking about this for a very long time and i’ve been struggling, so i’m going to do songs from musicals instead for now because it’s a little less daunting to me

cake: in a crowd of thousands - “but I knew, even then / in a crowd of thousands, i'd find you again”

this one isn’t really about the lyrical content, it’s about the sentiment. like cake could have met so much earlier but didn’t, and would always find each other again no matter what? they definitely would chase after each other, they have this sweet, young love feeling to me, which really goes with the song and with the couple? listen a cake anastasia au is long overdue and if someone would write it, i’d be eternally grateful

cashton: run away with me - “let me be your ride out of town / let me be the place that you hide / we can make our lives on the go / run away with me”

adventure vibes!!!! cashton strikes me as a paining that will always feel the need to move together. they wouldn’t be satisfied to stay in the same place forever, they need to have experiences together, and it HAS to be together. they don’t want to go anywhere without the other, and wherever they go is perfect, as long as they have each other.

lashton: fight for me - “and hey, could you face the crowd / could you be seen with me and still act proud / hey, could you hold my hand / and could you carry me through no man's land?”

come on, this song is so young lashton????? like ashton literally meeting luke by defending him when he was being teased????? this song reminds me so much of them, the way ashton is such a protector, the way that it’s them against the world???? promising to fight for each other, if the other is willing to fight for them, as well? very lashton to me! (but we’re just going to..... ignore what happens later in the show, it’s just the one song, i promise)

malum: all i’ve ever known - “and suddenly there's sunlight all around me / everything bright and warm / and shining like it never did before / and for a moment I forget / just how dark and cold it gets”

i’m literally tearing up just thinking of this as a malum song, i still want a calum as orpheus and michael as eurydice au so desperately..... but that aside, i feel VERY strongly about this as a malum song, how before each other, they were alone? how for a long time, all they had was each other? they make the darkness go quiet, they are each other’s entire world. they wholeheartedly believe that they have a forever love, because they do

mashton: only us - “but if you really see me / if you like me for me and nothing else / well, that's all that I've wanted for longer that you could possibly know”

this is the sweetest song i’ve ever given mashton, but it feels very fitting? like, this “let’s look past the bad, let’s make each other happy even though we know that there’s so much dark” feeling this song evokes is just very them, to me? it’s quirky and cutesy but there’s this undertone of pain, there’s this knowledge that the bad can’t be gone forever, but they can still enjoy the moments in between

muke: for good - “i've heard it said / that people come into our lives for a reason / bringing something we must learn / and we are led to those / who help us most to grow if we let them / and we help them in return”

maybe i just really really love the luke as glinda and michael as elphie headcanon, but i don’t know, this song is all about having met someone who changes everything, and at their very core, this is muke, to me. i think when it comes down to it, the band would not have happened without the two of them becoming friends, and i think they’re just incredibly important to each other, more than nearly anyone else is, and they’ll always have that, no matter what. (i’m ignoring the break up vibes just let me have this)

newsies au if you want ash as jack and Luke as Davey then just make Calum Spot (let's be real he could be in charge of Brooklyn) and then have Michael be Race (chaotic energy) the only reason Race is allowed to sell at Sheepshead (which was technically in Brooklyn but real Race was a Brooklyn newsie (I did a big paper on the historical strike in high school)) is because Spot is in love and lets him encroach on the territory. also sprace has a lot more backing in the movie I am Big Supporter (1)

you really unleashed a beast here with newsies genuinely Bella at one time I could quote both the movie and musical almost word for word. anyway! depending on how you view the jack/spot dynamic as two leaders of allied groups of newsies I think that could fit cashton and Michael as Race aka the right hand for Manhattan (before Davey arrived of course) with Ash as Jack could fit for Mashton. Alright so I know this is late and I don't wanna be creepy or anything, but I love the concept of omega Ashton you wrote (and your work in general) and I only just worked up the courage to send this ask. What I want to know is: what kind of omega do you think Ashton is? Does he try to be loud and outgoing in an attempt to mask his status, or do you think he is just content to be mellow and giggly and soft as usually expected???do you have any other ideas about life for Ashton??

aww babe 😭 thank you so much for sending this, holy shit!! Trust me, ur not creepy at all, it actually makes me really happy to know that you liked my abo verse (and my writing in general, I CRY). I loooooove abo so much but unfortunately not many ppl in the fandom like it or even know it exists, so im always thrilled to find others who enjoy it too. There’s no need to be afraid to talk to me, i’m always chillin and always willin to talk fic :))

As for omega ashton, the way I picture him, he’s definitely not fully comfortable with his status. As you said, he def tries to be loud and outgoing to kinda make it less obvious that he’s an omega and also to fight the stereotypes that come with the status. I think it’s a by-product of his life. In abo verses, I’ve always loved the headcanon that Ashton has had bad experiences with alphas and that he’s faced a lot of discrimination for being an omega, and so bc of that he’s not very trusting of alphas and also a little bit resentful towards them. It also explains why he feels somewhat ashamed of being an omega.

And in canon abo verses, I always headcanon that his dad was an alpha and when he left their family, it gave ashton a bad image of alphas while also forcing him to step up and be the protector/provider for his family (aka, forcing him to kind of give up those omega aspects of his nature and be an ‘alpha’ instead).

I think the only time Ashton allows himself to truly be his giggly, soft self is when he’s with his friends or when he’s with his partner (we’ll say Luke, just for ease’s sake). Another headcanon I love about omega ashton is that the reason he falls for Luke is because luke is not the typical alpha. Luke is kind and shy and totally non confrontational and he doesn’t really care for posturing or “proving” his “alpha-ness” and Ashton is immediately GONE when they meet bc Luke is basically an alpha without all the parts of an alpha that scare him.

(Just a note: I love lashton, but if you know me, you know that mashton has me by the heart even more so, and that last headcanon works incredibly well with gentle, docile alpha michael as well 😭)
