This is a massive fandom pet peeve of mine that I've literally never talked about. Yanno how people use headcanon refer to anything anyone thinks a certain character would do? Well thats not what it means.

A Headcanon is something that a character would do that does NOT contradict canon.

Headcanons are things that someone who has consumed that piece of media can hear about and go there's nothing in canon to disprove this, so even if it isn't stated it could hypothetically happen so maybe the character did do this but it was just never talked about.

A headcanon is something like Frankenstein having bolts-canon never says it but canon also never not says it.

For example, saying you headcanon a character is gay when they have canonically been shown to be attracted to the opposite gender is not a headcannon, because canon disproves it. Saying that a character is bi or pan or multisexual when they have canonically been shown to be attracted to the opposite gender is a headcanon(just because they have been shown to like one gender does not mean they don't like other genders).

Similarly you can headcanon a character as having transitioned into their canon gender but only if there's no canon depiction of them as a baby or toddler where they are the same gender they currently, canonically are(because that would show that they are cis).

This isn't just about sexuality or gender, but also about things a character's likes or dislikes and habits. I've seen so many people depict in fics and/or headcanon a character who mainly uses non violent & defensive strategies in fights but bcz its never really pointed out by the narrative and also bcz they are often verbally aggressive, their dislike of physical violence has been ignored, and its common to for them to be depicted and/or headcanoned as violent and physically agressive.

Another example is if a character canonically has been raised by their parents-even if it's proven by a single one off line or something the creator said in an interview-and then you headcanon them as growing up in an orphanage, is not a headcanon, because it actively goes against canon.

Another thing is things that are implied to not be canon being seen as a headcanon. For example, if a character is implied to be poor as a child and you headcanon them as being raised rich, then you either need an explanation for why they did or said whatever implied that they were raised poor or it's not a headcanon.

I think fandom needs a new word for stuff that people want to believe about characters that contradicts canon and/or implied canon. Oh wait, just realised that's called ooc but no one likes saying they like an ooc version of character bcz then they have to admit to mischaracterising a character or not actually liking the canon character so i still sorta think we need a new word.

Been playing with this headcanon in my mind for some time.

In the law of cycles world, Homura ends up getting adopted by the Kaname family, giving her a loving family but inadvertently causing Homura mental anguish when making the vacant room in the house her bedroom (said vacant room was Madoka's room when she still existed.)

Madoka magica witches as a magical girl. Part 1: Gertrud

Backstory: Nobara was a quiet and distrustful child, voices that sounded out of nowhere whispered to her that the world wanted to harm her. The only place of peace for the girl was a rose garden near her home.

But such a life could not last long, one day she had a breakdown during which she began to harm herself. After that, her parents sent her to an asylum for treatment. After that, Nobara lost even more trust in the people around her.

One night, a voice different from the ones she had heard spoke to her. He promised that he would fulfill any of her wishes on the condition that she would become a magical girl.

"I want to be free from these bonds and return to my garden"

Her wish came true. Now every night she could return to her garden, on her own "wings", and fight the witches to maintain balance. It was like that in the first months. After a while, she stopped being interested in defeating the witches, and spent all her time in the garden. This led to her escape being noticed and even being moved to a locked ward with no way to escape. Even the voice that gave her freedom gone. With this feeling of betrayal and distrustful her soul gem get darker...

Do you think Utena and/or Anthy would have gotten a wish from Kyubey (not at seventeen, maybe, but we know they were children once, and Anthy's power is quite... powerful)? Would they accept, what would they wish for?

I mean, the way powers work in P3M is not whether you start out with magical abilities, but how much "influence" you have over the lives of others. So you have Sayaka, who was a relatively ordinary girl who used her wish only to help a single person was very weak, versus Madoka whose existence was the focal point of multiple timelines.

However, potentially, both Utena and Anthy would be power houses by those rules. Anthy fuels Ohtori, which granted only influences a very small number of people, but she seals Dios's powers which is implied to have had a very strong negative effect on the rest of the world. Utena revolutionizes the world and ultimately leads to Anthy leaving and Ohtori collapsing, so not as powerful but no slouch either.

But what they would wish for... Well, depends when they get caught.

We know Anthy would wish to protect her brother/remove him from those who wished to use him. That's what she used her powers for canonically and aiding the memory of her brother/punishing herself is why she complies throughout the series in the dueling nonsense.

Utena's a little harder because what she wanted changed as she forgot things and is also sometimes more cerebral. Utena when her parents first die wants 'something eternal' she's just lost her parents and future, she's realized she herself is going to die, and everything is mortal and fragile. Shortly after, however, she wants to become a prince so she can free Anthy.

But I think we've seen that both would accept the wish given the extremes they go to in canon to reach their goals even when facing great adversity.

So, we have a lot of Madoka headcanons already, that we've mentioned before, but one that I don't think we've ever talked about is this specific line

I do not believe Kyubey when he says this (I do not believe him when he says anything but hear me out)

What this line implies to a lot of people, probably, is that all of the Incubators are emotionless bastards, which is probably the general intent with which the line was written, and we don't see other Incubators, so we don't know, but

What I instead interpret the line as, and prefer to believe, is that other Incubators with emotions do exist, and in fact it's normal for Incubators with emotions to exist, and some Incubators likely feel empathy for the magical girls and disagree with the entire energy harvesting scheme-- but the ones who think like Kyubey are the ones in charge and the ones who disagree are ostracized and marginalized such that they're viewed as abhorrent and irredeemably "mentally ill" and don't get to have a say in the matter

In short, I think that when Kyubey says "we don't think emotions are normal" he means "I'm one of the neurotypical ones and because I have power in our society I don't care what the others think and will pretend they don't exist"

It's also my opinion (and maybe this is already obvious to most people but I'll say it anyway) that Kyubey does actually have emotions-- he just doesn't really call them that because to him "emotion" is a convenient shorthand for "emotions I don't have and don't care to try to understand"

If he was actually purely emotionless he probably wouldn't care so much.
