Remember when Feyre gifted her jewelry she had gotten from Tamlin to that water-wraith during the Tithe? I am now wondering if SJM got the idea for that scene from The One from the Selection series. In the Selection, there was this Selection tradition called the Convicting, where the Elite girls send a convicted man to jail to show they are willing to obey the laws of the country. The tyrannical king sent people who had committed minor crimes such as theft (which they did because they were extremely poor owing to a corrupt system) and gave them exceptionally harsh sentences because they were rebels. America, the main character, had been assigned a convict sentenced to life in prison for stealing clothes for his daughters (of course the real reason was because he was a rebel leader and the King wanted to spite America for being defiant). America then took off the jewelry Maxon had given her and gave it to the man to pay off his debt to the king. The other elite girls got mad at America for spitting on tradition and stealing the show, etc. etc. So, I can't help but wonder if SJM is comparing Tamlin to King Clarkson? If so... bro. Tamlin is not sentencing mild criminals to harsh sentences in prison for being rebels; he's just collecting taxes as any government can and should. He's not the villain here; he can't just make exceptions for people or else everybody will think they can get away with not paying tithe.

HOW IS ANYONE SUPPOSE TO LIVE-LAUGH-LOVE WHEN MAXON SCHREAVE, THE KING MAXON SCHREAVE SAYS, “Break my heart. Break it a thousand times if you like. It was only ever yours to break anyways.”

Like I’m not okay, I shall only ever be okay when I get someone like Maxon and they say this to me.

The One

☕ several favorite excerpts from the book.

I have a lot to highlight and keep tbh. aside from the book itself. (〃▽〃) This is my favorite among the three series so far. And these are just some of those breath taking parts I wanna re-read over and over again. -`♡´-

In this volume, the story literally showed a good harmony of reality and ideal that it wouldn't leave you doubting either the good parts or bad parts for all the ways the succeeding counter situations balance the feeling you'd actually experience gushing over when reading the latter. It sure is fiction but it didn't fail to show the raw and weak side of humans in a very accepting way. You would literally hate the bad circumstances Maxon and Mer had to experience but you would also love how they both will change its negative outcome instead in the most endearing way. "Especially Maxon". Being the prince that he is, I commend him for persevering a lot just to earn Mer's trust and love and everything in the rawest and most truthful way possible. He was never just a prince who sugarcoats everything just to appear manly and that's the loveliest thing about him, me thinks. Plus the bonus narratives of his refreshing reactions on normal social cues. <3

Do you enjoy the political aspects of the books or do you see them as a distraction from the romance?

I thought it was a good aspect to the books. I think Kiera did a good job to not only have it be part of Maxons life as a background aspect (because it is part of his life - being the future king), but also the fact that America was ultimately pulled in (both with the Italians, as well as the rebels), and that Kris was also an undercover supporter of the rebels, too.

We sometimes forget that the girls in the selection are between 16 and 20 years old - they're YOUNG! But having at least some understanding of what is going on politically is soo important, even if you are not very vocal about it.

The fact that there are so little soulmate AUs in The Selection fandom when America and Maxon are literally the definition of soulmates is a crime because they are soulmates even without the soulmate AU! And yes, I know I can solve this predicament by writing my own fanfics (don’t worry, I already have SO MANY in mind) but it doesn’t change the fact that we’re missing out. Like, how many more ways can we write the tension between America and Maxon but with the cute interactions as they fall in love and try to figure out who their soulmate is? Guys, we need to get going; scope the net, find the prompts, find inspo, and get cracking! We NEED this. You may have not needed it before but now I’m telling you that you DO need it.
