When Lance’s previously obsolete skills in language suddenly become very useful, he finds himself wondering why aliens can’t account for the fact that humans, particularly him, need sleep and would prefer linear timelines. (Or: an Arrival AU because I love that movie)

Except, Team Voltron isn't so sure why Lance is all rough edges and sharp points about showing off his wings. Or acting like a member of the Flock in general. It's clear he cares for them, but he's never shown an intimate part of him. Until he has to.

Like most things, it starts with the little things: his smile, his confidence, his talent. Eventually, all these little things add up to one big thing that threatens to crash over them like a heavy rain. But, maybe that wouldn't be a bad thing. Maybe something beautiful would come from it. the concept for this is "what if voltron aliens were like, a little bit less humanoid." Galra (and alteans, not pictured) get to be the most humanoid because theyre main characters lol

[ID: various voltron aliens redesigned to remove many of their humanoid features. The Galra are largely unchanged; the only difference is that they have six limbs. Keith is demonstrating standing on four limbs; he looks not unlike a centaur, although the "horse" part is just a continuation of his body, not a horse (and is also the same color as his human skin, because it is human skin. sorry not sorry). Kolivan is demonstrating standing on two limbs, and towers over everyone else. Krolia is demonstrating standing on all six limbs, which looks uncomfortable but possible.

There is also an example of an Olkari; whose face is unchanged but now is built similar to a praying mantis; a Puigian, who retains the approximate locations of the face markings and horns but looks more like some kind of deer creature; an Arusian, which is built like a snail; and a mer alien, which now looks like a fish with hands and antennae. Lance as a merman in space would be... interesting. He learns there's a pool in the Castle early on but it's. on the fucking ceiling. What the fuck. He's excited to land on a mer planet only to find out that the water temperature is so cold he can't even really enjoy it (he's from much warmer waters!). Very appropriate that he's the paladin of the blue lion, though.

Keith would still drive him insane. He can tell Keith is also a Mer, but like- he doesn't seem to care about being separate from the ocean for so long. Also would it kill you to hide your teeth? Do you need to announce to the whole world you're a shark? And Keith just stares at him like what the fuck are you talking about because he's lived on the surface since he lost his dad at eight and went there to try and find his mom.

(The Garrison is still in the middle of the fucking desert, but at least they have a *REGULAR POOL*. When Lance finds out Keith's just been living in the middle of the fucking desert for a year he just about loses his mind. What is *wrong* with you.)

You know the worst part about being a Pantser?

When you think you, finally, have come to an idea to bring everything full circle and wrap it up neatly and are giving yourself a pat on the back and breathing a sigh of relief because this story you've been writing for over two and a half damn years has an end in sight and it's almost finally over and you can stop thinking about it and then...

Then you just write this single little line and it creates this whole new tangent, this whole new plot and Goddamn it this story is already almost 200k and I want to cry and ram my head into the wall and yet now that the idea is out there I can't shove it back into the dark recesses of my mind so here we go, damn it all xD

(The fic in question if anyone is wondering is Bottled Ocean, my Patreon Exclusive Mer!Lance fic featuring Night Elf Captain Lotor and slaves Shiro (Human) and Keith (Half-Human, Half-Night Elf) and is so full of whump and angst and pain I could literally bottle it as the title suggests xD. It's posted through Chapter Thirty-Five on said Patreon and I'm hoping to start publishing the rest once I finish the darn thing)

(and for anyone unsure of the term "Pantser" it describes the writing style fondly known as "flying by the seat of your pants" versus a "Plotter" who outlines and has an actual idea of where their story is going and how it gets there. I never know where mine go, they lead me and I just follow ;p)
