Pete Appreciation Post

Pete and Nat:

As her partner, he not only handles but actually and actively loves her family.

He goes to Al-Anon meetings WITH her (1x2).

He doesn't show up to Christmas empty handed (to steal Carmy's words that'd make him an asshole). He continues to be joyful and make small talk while being ripped to shreds for his attempt at a funny, genuinely considerate tuna casserole (2x6).

One of Nat's biggest traumas (flashback to 2x6 of Donna grabbing her by the face while threatening to kill herself) is juxtaposed with her greatest joy - ending the day with Pete on the couch watching TV (2x8).

Everything Pete does and says in 2x10. I don't even know where to start. Him so beyond proud and supportive and excited and happy for Nat. Him trying to convince Donna to come inside by playing to their shared pride of Nat (and Carm). His reaction after the conversation with Donna. Chris Witaske you talented actor and Pete you beautiful, patient, loving, understanding, forgiving man.

Pete and Carmy:

Pete makes such an effort with him (to steal Mikey's words he gives like the biggest fuck). He genuinely embraces Carmy and wants so desperately to be embraced by Carmy in return:

He brushes/laughs off an unexplained past incident involving Carmy (and presumably Michael) that sent him to urgent care. Very bro siblings roughhousing behavior (1x2).

He lets Carmy use his and Nat's freezer even though he knows she'll be mad at him for it. Very brothers ganging up on their sister/two siblings scheming against the third (which I imagine happened between the Berzatto siblings so much and in so many combinations) (1x5).

He was so hype and adorably complimentary about Carmy's homemade ecto cooler and ugh I wish Carm had given more credit there because they are clearly just both big nerds at heart (1x4).

He defends Carmy for being called a loser at the catered party by bringing up his career as one of the most lauded chefs (as I've said before, he and Syd were the two members of the Chef Carmy club). And he does so in front of a large and intimidating assortment of friends and family (to paraphrase Carmy paraphrasing Marcus we see that Pete can throw down huh). Very protective big brother vibes (1x4).

He then individually compliments Carmy's courage for leaving home and making an incredible career for himself. He also makes a point to tell him that Nat is proud of him. Emotionally supportive brother behavior (1x4).

He thanks Carmy for letting him be a part of his family! It's beyond sweet to say that to your in laws, but when your in laws are the Berzattos (1x4)?!

Pete And The Berzattos:

He still gets ribbed more than not, but at the end of the day he's accepted.

Carmy saying I kind of like Pete now (1x5).

Stevie saying his heart was in the right place after the tuna faux pas (2x5).

Fak saying he'll be a great daddy (2x10).

Donna congratulating Pete about the baby thus signaling her approval (2x10).

Pete Is An Only Child:

I've been convinced since S1 and S2 only confirmed.

The genuine love and effort he puts into each family member (blood, extended, and honorary) of the Berzattos not only shows Pete is truly a nice guy, but it speaks to his deep desire to be a part of a family - to belong (see all examples above).

We learned Richie and Sydney are only children (It must have been nice to have Nat and Carm. Yeah, now you do too. *sobs*) so another proof point that all partners to the Berzatto siblings are onlys.

Stevie. In his speech, he says You guys have been so kind to me. You let me hang out with your every holiday. I don't have a family like this and I'm really grateful you make space for me at this table and you make time for me on the holidays. You can imagine an exact speech coming from Pete. And like Pete, Stevie genuinely loves and gets along with each of the Berzattos (2x6). A last parallel between these two: Donna speculates if he's gay and that is totally something I can imagine her, Mikey or Richie saying about Pete at first meeting.

Something about not knowing Pete's last name or anything about him outside of his relationships with the Berzattos signals to me he's not from a big family and/or is not close to them and really just exists in the Berzatto cinematic universe.

Takeaways:

Pete is the MVP of The Bear. We better get more of him in S3.

"Lassiter is literally on fire right now." "Are we talking 'Michael Jackson in the Pespi commercial' fire, or 'misusing the word literally' fire?" Spoken like Burton Guster's best friend and a man after my own heart.

Lassie going "YES Spencer is here, my victory is complete! Spencer come to the new crime scene with us so I can gloat some more :)" They really, really do love annoying each other.

Gus is great in this one. Smugly backing Shawn against Lassie. Getting mad Shawn is imperiling Psych with his stunts. Still has his life-size T-rex head from midde school in his mom's garage.

Gus, known agent of chaos, sitting smugly by while his best friend gets interventioned: "Don't look at me, I'm just here for the cupcakes."

See, it's funny because it's true. He has no particular investment in helping Henry or the department shrink gang up on Shawn. He also feels no particular investment in helping Shawn. This circus will play out with or without him, but Henry's kitchen has cupcakes.

Vick: "Do you want to tell him who our victim was?"

Lassie, in the mournful tones of a small child asked if they "want" to go to bed: "No." *doesn't tell him*

Shawn repeating Jules's exact misuse of "literally" clearly just to annoy Gus.

Michael and Crystal’s wedding is the unofficial debut of Tillie and Calum’s situationship. Tillie is a grooms-woman, Calum the best man, and they’re surprising the happy couple with a performance of ��Lover” by Taylor Swift during the reception.

Tillie is already tipsy by the time they get to the “groom’s room” for the morning. Calum was tasked with getting bagels for all the guys, meanwhile Tillie was making all the guys Irish coffees and trying to get everyone else hyped up. He walks in with his giant bag of bagels and finds his girl chanting ‘chug’ at Luke. He’s just drinking a bottle of water.

“Tillie, you gotta take it down a notch,” Ashton says, giggling over his mug of spiked coffee.

She whips her head around, grinning evilly. “You wanna be next, Irwin?”

Calum laughs, plopping the bagels onto the table and cracking open the bottle of orange juice he’d bought at the bagel shop.

“Honestly, maybe you should make all of us chug a bottle of water. Gotta be hydrated for the big day,” Cal says and takes a sip of his juice.

“Water is for losers, Cal,” Tillie teases.

“Tills, I’d actually like to remember the best day of my life. I will be drinking water until the reception,” the groom comments. He rips into the bag of bagels, grabbing an everything for himself. “Thanks for getting the bagels, Cal.”

Tillie pouts, running up to Michael and jumping onto him like a koala, making him nearly lose his balance. “You at least have to take a shot!”

Michael groans, just continuing what he was doing. He spreads cream cheese on his bagel while Tillie clings to him. She’s not heavy, and she’s supporting herself. It’s just a nuisance to have a human stuck to you while you try to make a bagel. “Let me guess, you’re not letting go until I agree to take a shot.”

She grins. “You know me so well.”

“I’ll drink an Irish coffee, but that’s it,” he offers as hopefully an acceptable compromise.

At that, Tillie lets go of Michael, dropping to her feet again. She heads to the bar in the back corner where she’s made a few other Irish coffees already this morning, quickly mixing one up for the groom.

“Tommy, want one?” She calls.

“I’m good, T. But thank you.”

“Knock knock!” A familiar voice calls from the doorway, not bothering to wait for an ‘okay’ before he walks in. Ryan and Andy, the boys’ tour photographers, walk in, cameras around their necks and coffees in their hands.

The group of guys, and Tillie, cheer as they enter. They all exchange hugs and greetings, and the photographers stop at the table to get bagels for themselves, too. Crystal hired a more traditional wedding photographer for the bridal party and the rest of the day, but for the groomsmen, Mike just said he’d have Ryan and Andy get photos of them getting ready, since they’d be attending the wedding anyway.

While the whole gang eats bagels and Tillie forces Irish coffees into everyone’s hands, the photographers grab candid shots of the groomsmen in their matching black sweatsuits. Tillie’s is massive on her, since they ordered unisex sweats. The men’s size small is roughly a women’s medium, and Tillie is and extra small across the board.

Michael’s says “groom” in black embroidery on the chest, with the date embroidered in white on the cuff. The guys’ and Tillie’s say “groomsman” and Calum’s says “best man.” They all thought they were goofy, but Crystal insisted they do something. They settled on these, hoping the subtle embroidery comes off as a little less cheesy.

Unlike Crystal and the bridesmaids, this group doesn’t really have much to do to get ready for the wedding, so their day is mostly spent goofing off. While Tillie does her hair and makeup, the boys play beer pong and do makeshift karaoke using Youtube and a whiskey bottle as a microphone. Once Tillie is ready to go, she helps Michael do his hair.

Michael has done his hair to go on stage countless times, so he could easily do it himself, but Tillie said that this is the one day in his life that he shouldn’t have to do his own hair. Calum thought it was sweet that Tillie was being such a good friend and whispered to Ryan to make sure he got pictures of the interaction.

When Michael disappears to go do his first look, Calum takes a seat next to Tillie on a leather couch, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. She relaxes into his side quickly, leaning her head on his chest.

“Are you excited?” He asks.

“Of course!”

Calum smiles. “Me too. Are you gonna cry?”

Tillie cackles. She’s not entirely emotionless, but crying at weddings is definitely not something she has on her resume. “Who do you think I am? Hell no. Are you?”

His cheeks tinge pink and he hangs his head. “Probably.”

She looks up at him with a pouted lip and grabs his cheek between her fingers and thumb, pinching him. “Aw, aren’t you just the cutest!” She coos exaggeratedly.

He rolls his eyes and pulls her tighter against himself. “I’ve known Michael since we were so young. It’s a big day. I love them.”

She smiles, leaning up to press a soft kiss to his lips. “It’s sweet, Thomas. It’s a nice feeling to have people you care about that much.”

“Woah,” Andy says as he stares at the two of them cuddled up on the couch. “So this is like, a thing now?”

He’d seen the pictures of them online. The hickies on their necks and interlocked hands. He had seen and heard the rumors, but he knew Tillie. He had spent a lot of time with her on tour, and he knew her habits. He also knew that Calum had a thing for the spunky girl, but he didn’t think anything was ever going to come of it. He thought maybe this was a one or two night thing, but now, he’s seeing it in person, almost two months after the first round of photos went around.

It seems like Tillie is actually dating him. It seems like they’re happy together. He had to see it up close to believe it.

He believes it now.

“Is that a problem for you, Andrew?” Tillie asks. She places a hand on Calum’s leg and squeezes it. He pinches her side in response, so she does it again.

“No, no! Not at all. You guys are cute. Just a little shocking at first.” Andy holds his camera up to his eye and snaps a photo of the two of them cuddled up on the couch before they can even recognize what’s happening.

That’s when the day of coordinator walks in and says they have 20 minutes to finish getting ready and to line up. Tillie groans, not wanting to put on her dress. Since she’s standing with the guys, her dress is black to match their tuxes, even though the bridesmaids are all wearing champagne, gold, and pink.

She gets a kiss on the cheek from Calum before she heads to the bathroom to change into the one shoulder chiffon gown that Crystal picked out for her. She was given the OK to wear Converse with it, thankfully, since her feet will be mostly hidden by the dress. When she reenters the room, Calum grins.

“You look so good,” he gushes, his hands on his face while he takes in the stunning woman in front of him. Her hair is dark brown for the wedding, curled and pinned so it cascades only over her right shoulder, and while she got dressed, she put on a coat of her favorite red lipstick.

He walks up to her, bending down to kiss her, but she sticks her hand up in between their faces.

“No! Not when I have my makeup done,” she says with a tone that comes off as ‘how did you not know this.’

He pouts. “Not even on the cheek?”

She rolls her eyes. “Fine, one kiss on the cheek.”

Cal pecks her cheek lightly before he grabs her by the shoulders, spinning her around so she can walk in front of him, but leaving his hands on her shoulders. He massages them while they walk to line up for the ceremony. She is first in line, while Calum is last, as the best man. Michael ended up having Cal as the best man solely because he’s known him the longest, so he kept that same energy when ‘ranking’ the rest of his groomsmen. Tillie has known him the least amount of time, so she’s on the opposite end from Calum.

She doesn’t care. She’s just excited to be a part of this day for Michael. There aren’t a lot of people in this world that she considers family, but Michael earned that title long ago. She’s happy to wear a stuffy dress and spend the day around people who are all crying if it means she’s celebrating her brother.

The ceremony is short but incredibly sweet. As expected, Calum cries, and so does every single member of 5SOS. Actually, Tillie is pretty sure she’s the only member of the bridal party who doesn’t at least tear up. She smiles the whole time, in awe that two people are both so in love and so surrounded by love that there’s hardly a dry eye in the room while they vow their lifelong dedication to each other.

The reception is an open bar, which means Tillie is ordering trays of shots and challenging everyone to take them. She’s so wrapped up in cheering and whooping as she gets person after person to take a gulp of burning tequila that she doesn’t notice that the DJ has been cut off and Luke and Sierra are on a small stage.

When she realizes, she halts and sets the now empty tray on the closest table.

“Hi, everyone,” Luke says. “Sierra and I have prepared a little song. Please dance while we sing, because it’d be really awkward if everyone just stared at us.”

Everyone in the room laughs, but nobody moves to start dancing again, even as Luke plays the opening notes. Tillie recognizes it immediately and smiles, her eyes searching the room for her guy. Calum appears by her side in seconds, wrapping his arm around her waist to let her know he’s there.

“Can I have this dance?” Cal asks.

Tillie blushes and smiles. “If I have to,” she huffs sarcastically. She grabs his hand and pulls him to the dance floor while Luke and Sierra cover “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis.

Calum and Tillie dance to the song with everyone, and Tillie can’t pretend she doesn’t feel Michael staring at them with a huge smile. He’s happy to see the two of them so happy on his big day. Calum has the dorkiest, cheesiest grin as he stares down at the girl he’s wanted for so long. Her cheeks are extra flushed now, feeling a little uncomfortable with all the eyes on her during what is the most heartfelt dance she’s ever shared with anyone, but she’s happy in this moment.

She feels like the song is spot on. She feels like she’s falling in love, and it’s terrifying and exciting at the same time.

When the song ends, Cal nods his head toward the stage with a raised eyebrow. He’s asking Tillie if she wants to go sing their song now. She nods in response, once more dragging Calum behind her.

Calum takes the acoustic guitar from Luke, who looks surprised. They hadn’t told anyone they were also planning on singing.

Tillie stands behind the mic while Calum takes the stool Luke was just using. Crystal and Michael are watching them with sincere surprise, but they’re both excited to see whatever the duo on stage is going to share. They are both talented enough to kill whatever performance they have planned, and they know them so well that it’ll be something special to the Cliffords.

“Hi folks,” Tillie starts, giggling as Calum almost slips off the stool next to her while he tries to get comfortable. “First off, cheers to the happy couple!” Everyone cheers.

“Okay, no, you’re supposed to drink. Everybody, drink.” She takes a sip of the rum and Coke next to her as a demonstration while the whole room laughs. About half of them succumb to yet another attempt of Tillie’s peer pressure.

Calum just watches her in awe.

“Now, I know that a very special someone is a Swiftie,” Tillie continues. “In that vein, Thomas and I — actually, hold up! Can we get a round of applause for the best man?!”

Calum hangs his head in embarrassment while the whole room hoots and hollers with praise.

“Okay, back to me,” she says, making everyone laugh. “We’re gonna cover madam Swift’s ‘Lover’ for the happy couple.”

Michael looks at his best friends with tears in his eyes as they begin the song, and Crystal is already crying from Luke and Sierra’s performance. She reaches up and wipes the tears from under Michael’s eyes before she pulls him to her to dance again. Tillie hadn’t felt like crying that badly until she saw that.

She wishes she could find a love that would mean someone would wipe tears from under her eyes and pull her closer in that moment, even if she’d rather pull away.

The weirdest part of that, for her, is knowing that Calum wants to be that person, and she is letting him close enough that he may be able to.

Their performance goes without a hitch. Together they harmonize beautifully and Tillie has palpable chemistry with Calum. He stares at her longingly as she hits the high notes and he loves how her nose scrunches up when she does. He’s pleasantly surprised at the end of the song when she walks over to stand closer to him and looks him in the eye.

“Can I go where you go? Can we always be this close, forever and ever?” She sings with a smile.

He’s on a high by the time the song ends and everyone applauds them. He can’t help himself from planting repeated kisses to her forehead before they take a quick bow.

They reenter the audience and the DJ resumes his music. Tillie grabs her rum and Coke and holds it up as she dances her way back into the crowd. Michael steps away from his wife so he can go find Tillie and Calum — but mostly Tillie, even though Calum is following her around as he has done since that night in Montreal.

“Matilda!” Michael singsongs, wrapping her into a hug.

“Michael!” She mocks.

“What the hell was that?!”

She shrugs, her eyes flitting to the tall Māori man to her left who’s smiling at her in a way she can only describe as lovingly. “Crystal likes Taylor. We thought it was fitting.”

Mike hugs her again so he can more discreetly whisper into her ear. “Don’t be going soft on me, now.”

With her hand that’s not holding her drink, she pinches the groom on his side as hard as she can. “Never.”

When they’ve hugged and Michael has given Calum an embrace, too, Mike puts a hand on each of their shoulders. “Thank you guys, seriously, for everything. I love you both, but I’m gonna go hang with my wife.”

For the first time in her life, Tillie is at a wedding and pondering the thought of what her own wedding might look like someday. Even stranger: the person she’d consider marrying is staring at her, wonderstruck, imagining the exact same thing. Tillie has Calum’s suit jacket draped over her, swallowing her tiny frame, and stares up at him with stars in her eyes,

She doesn’t stop him when he bends down to kiss her, knowing her lipstick is a lost cause at this point.

Standing in the Los Angeles January coolness under the stars, they’re both over the moon. Surrounded by people they love, they’re in their own little world as they sway to a song neither of them is listening to.

Oh my god Ted Lasso fandom you have outdone yourselves. I am in awe.

I saw the 'Nathan will out Colin' posts, the 'Michael is Rupert's plant' posts, the 'Shandy is going to out Keeley' posts...

But I just saw a post saying that Edwin Akufo used the Home Secretary of the UK as scapegoat in order to vandalise Sam's restaurant.

Truly, the 3D chess you all play is next level. I can only hope that the show producers share a fraction of your brilliance and the spin-off next season is every single minor character of colour we have ever glimpsed forming an unstoppable gang of supervillains who destroy the serenity of every single white character they might have shared a shot with.

I'll personally be most hyped about Anwar the reporter's devious revenge on Roy Kent.

So I think you probably mean Livio?

Livio and Razlo are my BOYS man, they're my guys. OUGH.

Usually I am Not A Fan of characters being added to the main cast super late in the game, but I think him being introduced a little earlier as a villain superrrr helped me accept him as Part of The Gang. Ya know? He's one of my favourite characters and I just adore him. That being said, it's really hard to talk about him without spoilers. Like, really hard. Actually Trigun is hard to talk about without spoilers! So I'm gonna shove this long ramble nobody is gonna read, under a read more. I'm a kind soul, I'm protecting your dash.

Also total warning, this isn't like... legible, this is the worse way to learn about the character cos im just going "wow it was cool when he did this thing... and also this thing... hes so cool i love him" for too many words.

So I'll address his main sort of... thing, first off. So Livio has dissociative identity disorder, and like, for a lot of it, it's quite clear that Nightow didn't exactly go in with a heap of research on the subject. However, I wouldn't call it a negative portrayal at all. Ofc its not really up to me, but like, he wasn't really portrayed as dangerous because of his disorder. He and Wolfwood have the same backstory, they're dangerous because of The Eye of Michael and those dudes have always been explicitly condemned in-narrative as, y'know, the baddies. It's less "he's bad because he's bad" and more "he does these things because he's been conditioned by a cult from a young age to do these things". His disorder is like... not even a factor. The Eye just likes stealing kids and training them for bad stuff, man. And like, you do feel sorry for them. Both Livio and Razlo have been hugely manipulated by Chapel in particular, who positioned himself almost as a father figure, and certainly led them to believe he cares about them. So like, it's not really surprising he does everything he's asked to, he hasn't really had anywhere else he's felt cared for. Anyway I LOVE Livio's intro in the manga. We're told two guys are coming, Livio the Double Fang, and The Tri-p of Death.

Then these two dudes show up:

And like... you make the obvious assumption that those are the guys, ya know? Sure looks double-fangy to me. They're then shown tearing through a bunch of intimidating looking dudes to sort of, hype up how strong they are, right? But nuh cos see.

Livio just comes in and wrecks their shit, picks them both off as though they were nothing.

and to be fair, they are! He's a very high-level eye of Michael dude ya know?

So yeah, that's our introduction to Livio, fantastic way to show that he's just, like, strong as hell. We learn he's joining the Gung-ho Guns, so y'know, oof, he's now in direct opposition to our heroes, supposed to make you nervous and all. Anyway he and Chapel show up every now and then to just be... y'know... annoying. Try and kill him a lil y'know... that sort of thing.

It's these fucked up family reunions that we love ya know. This is totally me at Christmas.

Anyway this time was rlly funny because Elendira rlly said "you three are so annoying pls leave your drama at the door"

And they DID hahaha. I don't blame them, she's scawy.

Anyway what I think I like most about Livio is how like... y'know, sweet he is. He's kinda like Wolfwood in that he's a total sweetheart at his core but life just hasn't let him be sweet, ya know?

When Jasmine was in trouble, baby Wolfwood didn't even hesitate to run out and save her.

And Livio was the same, you know? And after The Couch, Livio even says, he wants to live his life like Wolfwood so like, we've got these two dudes with near identical journeys.

From orphans, to initiates, to assassins, to good guy with a gun lmfao. Despite what Livio does, it's really hard to ever hate him, and Razlo, too is extremely sympathetic...

Like he's got his own motivations and shit he's working through, man.

Anyway I really love during the Elendira fight when hes like, struggling to beat her, how Razlo gives Livio his own sort of hype man experience like the manga flashes back to how hard Livio worked to keep up with Razlo and the Eye, and Razlo is like hyping him up the whole time. It's really nice and wholesome :)

Anyway his journey from emo cult man to himbo cowboy was fantastic and I love Livio so much, he's a sweetheart.

And I loved his appearance at the end of the manga, like, showing he was looking after the orphanage and stuff.

And also this whole scene where he and Vash ate together made me cry.

He got his music career ground into nothingness before he became an adult, got shocked into incoherence by a lame who has a godawful ponytail, got cussed with homophobic lies, it's great to hear him launch off these exciting house drum programming that gets so big in the mix he kinda has to be - wait, his name is Troye? Wow, what else did they take -- he had an actual singing career and acting career before this. He's never been named Xander? decided to just dance to the song and fix the blurb later, never does [8]

Oliver Maier: Sivan's a curious export to me, a mostly middling songwriter who converts more and more fans each cycle simply by existing, like the Luigi who wins by doing absolutely nothing of pop music. I don't begrudge him it, I just don't see his angle. "Rush" is a certifiable Big Tune™, but to me that has more to do with the shouty lads on the hook than Troye, who flits around like a cherubic chaperone. [7]

Will Adams: So the solution to my problem with Troye's just-okay voice (besides Hot Chip remixes) is to baton pass the chorus to a full Village People chant. Brilliant! It's the cherry on a just-too-tailored piano-house instrumental, which makes me think that maybe he should phone Disclosure for some collabs. [6]

Katherine St Asaph: A rare show of genuine tension and heat from Troye Sivan. But that's not due to Troye so much as the heady fog of reverb and posse of mega-masc guys he surrounds himself with. [7]

David Moore: It's too late for me to grok Troye Sivan's whole deal, I think, but this reminds me of the fake-seeming dance tracks I constantly pull from Spotify's new music playlists, most of which are designed for Dance Mode [picture of purple disco ball] and Beast Mode [picture of buff shirtless man holding dumbbells] and presumably many other Modes that I can't imagine this particular song hyping me up for or, more accurately, helping me to survive with only minor shoulder injuries. [4]

Will Rivitz: Free us from the tyranny of gang vocals. [5]

Michael Hong: Not really a radical reinvention -- if "Dance to This" were dialed to a 5, then this is amped up to a measly 7, and Troye's been way more explicit with underage hookups and poorly disguised flower metaphors -- but damn if this isn't fun. [7]

Thomas Inskeep: Why isn't Troye Sivan an international, honest-to-goodness, radio-saturating popstar?! (Spoiler alert: it's because he's so openly gay in his lyrics, which in 2023 is absurd but there you fucking go.) Sivan's vocals here are simultaneously confident and dreamy, and goddamn, "Rush" is so swoony it actually feels like the rush you get meeting someone on a dancefloor and just connecting, immediately. And also, I mean, poppers; he clearly knows of what he sings. [8]

Wayne Weizhen Zhang: This summer, after seeing Barbie & Renaissance in the same day, my friend found poppers on the floor of our favorite drag bar that were so strong that I'm convinced to this day that I have brain damage. Was it a coincidence that this happened two weeks after the release of this song? I think not. [7]

Ian Mathers: In everything I'd read about the Troye Sivan album I don't recall seeing anyone mention "he sometimes sounds a bit like Friendly Fires now" and honestly I would have liked to have had that information. [9]

Alfred Soto: I would've liked Troye Sivan as a model. Introverted but not shy, fluent in the ways in which a life of constructing an identity on one's phone brings new adventures and stirs up familiar fears, Sivan isn't coy. "Rush," though, reminds me of Jessie Ware's latest album: the forced euphoria of a camp counselor with two weeks to go before the end. [5]

Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: An all-time great song to jump up and down and chant along to. To make beautifully head-empty pretty bro music like this is a true gift that must not be squandered. [9]

Leah Isobel: "Rush" is suitably aerodynamic, with the exception of its blocky football-chant chorus. It's like a beer commercial plopped into a DJ set, and its masculinity comes across as glib compared with the airy pianos and bouncy bongos. But I get that Troye is the chronicler of emotional distance within intimacy, and I like that he takes some time out from huffing poppers with the boys to wink, "This shit is so much fun"; that's the kind of distance that feels true, the moment when your brain surfaces just long enough to realize how ridiculous it is to be a body in space. [6]

Brad Shoup: The video version offers a deal: you get a post-chorus without violent panning between fore- and background, but also a comedown outro about loving "with reciprocity". I'll take the wispy original, which tries to bulk up with a great bro chorus but ultimately glides around corners, pleading for pleasure. ("Kiss it when you're done" is such a good line. I can't get over it.) Also, two-and-a-half minutes is the right duration for this kind of churning yet weightless pop-house encounter. [7]

Crystal Leww: There's a Tiktok floating around where a girl asks where are the men who like women who look like Troye Sivan. While it's extremely funny, it also speaks to the fact that there's a real dearth of men in Western pop who are out here popping their pussy and putting their whole back into it. "Rush" is a full pop song with a curated, cohesive vibe throughout the song, a hook that doesn't stick out in a sea of blah before and after it, and a choreographed silly little dance that Troye and his boys do. The bar is in hell -- we're lucky we at least have "Rush." [6]

Alex Ostroff: On the Something to Give Each Other press tour, Troye pointedly raved about how inspired he is by Janet. Intriguingly, his standom doesn't focus on her Imperial Phase: Not her declaration of Control, the politics of Rhythm Nation 1814, nor the personal discovery of janet. Not even The Velvet Rope's blend of the internet, queer activism, kink & self-empowerment which left such an indelible mark on the last decade of R&B and underground dance music. No, when asked for his three favourite Janet songs, Troye's picks are 'Together Again", "All Nite (Don't Stop)" and "SloLove." Two-thirds of those are from Damita Jo, Janet's horniest record. Damita Jo featured "Warmth" and "Moist," back-to-back odes to fellatio and cunnilingus so explicit that Janet cut them from the clean version altogether. That feels right for the Troye era that launched with "Rush." It's not that Troye hasn't explored sexuality before -- Bloom's title track is famously a bop about bottoming, after all -- but those were his takes on "Let's Wait Awhile," "Anytime, Anyplace," or the psychosexual therapy moments on Velvet Rope, where sex was a window into his emotional state and romantic relationships. Here, Troye just delves into the joy of spontaneous lust and delivers a femme top anthem where his masc bros chant about wanting your touch. He whispers "Breathe '1, 2, 3' / take all of me" and instructs you to "Kiss it when you're done". Like Damita Jo, 'Rush' can sometimes feel uncomfortable or cringey (is the glory hole 12" vinyl packaging too much or exactly enough?), but it also undeniably fucks. [8]

Joshua Minsoo Kim: Earlier this year, a relatively popular musician saw a tweet I made that called their music bad, and responded with a quote tweet that derisively called me a twink. It was wonderful. I have never been called a twink before, and never will be again given my body type, but it started to make me think about all the things I'll never experience in life because of the ways in which we play into type when it comes to sex. Or maybe that's just me being pessimistic. Anyways, how about those meatheads chanting here? [6]

summary: Haunted by never-ending tragedies, reporter Seo Joon decides to end his life in an almost derelict bath house. It's there he runs into a pair of odd strangers who force him to pick a side when they get into a violent fight, Seo Joon accidentally ending up killing one to save the other. A connection immediately forms between Seo Joon and the rescued stranger, Yul, who convinces the former to put off his initial plans.

It's only the next morning that Seo Joon learns two things: Yul is a photographer working for the police, and the man they killed was completely certain Yul was a serial killer trying to claim him as the next victim.

After five years, numerous iterations, countless drafts, and loooong periods of wringing my brain for that one thing that was missing, this baby's finally, really, completely finished.

We’ve spend many NYEs together, dancing with Yul in his red room, helping Seo Joon type up his articles, hyping Jiwon up to keep chasing her theories, and goading Kibum to go just a little more unhinged. It’s only fitting I finish this just as this year comes to a close.

This story really put me in touch with what it felt like to love and be in love, challenged me to embrace my lows and find the uncanny beauty in them, and will always serve as the one reliable reminder that I am good. I can write. The awards it won prove it. Impostor syndrome be damned.

Ironically, even if Forget-Me-Not is now finally put to rest, the gang’s gonna stick around for a little while longer thanks to my beloved WIP, Metanoia. SJ and Yul, you’ll always be Plain River legends, inspiring young impressionable idiots-in-love Michael and Kai. Jiwon, Michael probably wouldn’t have survived childhood without you. Kibum... your kingly eccentricies have remained untouched and present everywhere you’ve ever gone.

This is my lil’ love letter to this piece, and I can’t wait to come back to this in a few years time and remember how much I cherish this story. For future reminiscing’s sake, I’ve included some of my favorite excerpts under the cut (spoilers ahoy).

Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers Tour: Los Angeles y COCOA!

The time has finally come. I will be attending the “Big Steppers” tour in L.A., purposely missing it in Dallas. I refused to watch anyone’s IG story who attended that show. Once the dates were released, I wanted to see KDot in either Brooklyn or Oakland (I have never been to either). Considering how greedy resellers can be, the Brooklyn GA tix averaged $3k when they originally sold for $200. Let’s just say, Brooklyn was out of the question, expeditiously. Oakland was out of the question as well, so we headed to my second home, the beautiful ‘City of Angels.’

Flight over.

It was a semi-chilly evening in downtown L.A. My god-sister and I would visit the Grammy Museum in L.A. Live. Side Note: Anytime I travel to L.A., I make sure to visit the Grammy Museum. It houses some of the greatest items in Grammy history. The exhibits often change, but over the years, I could always count on Michael Jackson’s sparkly jackets to have a permanent home. After exploring all areas, we got food nearby to stall for time.

Walking over to the Crypto.com Arena, I noticed multiple groups of people standing around the entrances, however, there was a sperate entrance for those who obtained floor tix. Staff escorted us to check in to receive our “special” wristbands. As an avid concertgoer, there was something different about getting into this show. There were numbers on the wristbands. The numbers would indicate where you are in line. This would not allow for anyone to “cut” in front of you, due to the ticket scanning process. This was a first and honestly, quite impressive. People get really “ballsy” at these things, especially when there isn’t assigned seating. Amazing!

Random: We stood in line for 30 minutes before the doors opened for us, however, I took in the scenery to observe the fashions around me. Unfortunately, every other person had on Dunks or Yeezys. I can barely remember, everyone sorta blended in. Nothing really stood out. Honestly, I’m almost certain I was overdressed. Teehee.

Everything flowed as it was supposed to. Doors opened, tickets were scanned, and we were in! The GA/ VIPs were allowed in first, so walking into a semi-dark (and empty) Crypto Arena was a little scary. Maybe that was the point, considering the theme of the show. A lot of interesting things will soon take place.

I quickly made my way down the stairs to the floor and created my designated standing spot on the metal dividers. I looked around and for a half hour, the arena was still scarce. I guess one could blame the L.A. traffic for everyone’s delay. *Fast forward*

As attendees slowly poured in, the show would begin with Tanna Leone as the opener. The L.A. native is the third artis to be signed to Lamar’s pgLang label. After sharing his EP with Dave Free (co-founder of pgLang), Leone expresses in an interview that the signing happened organically. Leone performed “Picasso” from his debut album, Sleepy Soldier. The west coast artist includes a lot of melodic tunes in his raps, exhibiting plenty of versatility in his sound.

BABY KEEM, the breakout star and is the first signee on the pgLang label. He also happens to be the cousin of our beloved KDot. Having produced and collaborated with Lamar on various projects, Baby Keem has displayed artistry in his own right. Lamar has publicly claimed Baby Keem to be a “musical genius.” Opening with “Trademark USA” which was also a crowd favorite. Attendees were hyped during the chorus of “Shout out to the dead, to the dead, to the dead!” They loved it. We look forward to what Baby Keem will do next!

Once his set was over, the room became completely dark, and a skit played. One would appreciate how steady the show moved. No outlandish delays, just consideration for the 30+ gang. The time is now. The black sheet that covered the runway was removed, exposing a white sheet underneath. The stage is dark, but the runway now filled with light, and “horror movie” violin sounds begin playing. The dancers robotically march out, hunching their shoulders to the beat, while taking their places in line. The guys in black suits, gals in white suits. This is giving Jordan Peele “US” vibes to say the least.

The curtains rise and you could see Lamar sitting at an upright piano, with a ventriloquist doll that resembled him sitting atop. He gets up from the piano with the puppet in arm, making his way down the runway to display their matching ensemble. Lamar is also wearing a “Michael Jackson” glove, paying homage to the King of Pop. He simply stands there for a moment and the crowd goes wild! I could not stop screaming, because dude was really gone for 5 years! He wasn’t in the media, he was featured on a few songs, but no interviews, no press, no nothing. I was thrilled to see him again after only seeing him once in 2013 during the good kid, m.a.a.ad city tour.

Kendrick opened with N95 from the “Big Steppers” album, getting everyone tuned in to sing along. An outburst of fireworks covered the stage and it was on! Lamar sorta takes us on a journey to his more hype singles from good kid, m.a.a.d city album to Big Steppers, to DAMN, back to Big Steppers, to “Pimp A Butterfly,” back to Damn- You get it? After several songs, so much happiness came over me. I absolutely love music and this form of art is the type of communication I enjoy most. Its the relationship the artist provides between what they’re feeling and how they connect with their audience. It’s almost inexplainable, but other music heads will feel me.

Although Lamar didn’t provide much conversation in between songs, he just kept performing, giving the fans what they wanted. There were many points throughout the set where true symbolism was displayed, but unless you were WOKE-woke, it could’ve gone over your head, for example, Lamar “took” a COVID test mid-show, but “IFKYK.” Even I questioned some of it, but when you’re hyper-focused on the actual experience, you question, did the dancers represent his demons? Why was there a doll? Doesn’t this choreography seem creepy? What is the true theme of this show? Through each performance, Lamar doesn’t give “choreography” but very cool, slow-mo type dances. Quietly ending the show back at the keys of the piano, Lamar fades away.

These elements are clearly outlines of his artistry and thought process-something not even a journalist could conceptualize, but an avid concertgoer could appreciate—It’s art. He’s much more than a conscious rapper, Lamar is a visionary.

@calumsdemons - This beautiful Laura was one of the first people I ever requested a mood board from. I loved her blog from the moment I laid eyes on it and I’m still every bit as in love with it now. She’s super talented at making mood boards and they’re just instantly recognisable to me as her work when I see them on my dash which is a talent in itself I think! She’s also a very sweet person and I love her a lot.
