a little while ago i had a idea for a menhera themed story but i dont wanna post it on my main blog SO im gonna post it here even tho it doesnt really fit the theme XD

a girl is an up-and-coming idol, scouted for her good looks out of high school. she does actually care about idoling, but there’s a problem... she’s a menhera dealing with delusions, hallucinations, and a self harm addiction. she tries to manage both sides of her life and be the best idol she can, but she feels like it’s only a matter of time before it all comes crashing down..... until she starts having a strange and very persistent hallucination. turns out, it’s not a hallucination at all, but the ghost of a dead idol! the ghost girl struggled with some similar things when she was alive, and was even reported to have died by suicide when she died a year or so ago. however, the dead idol seems like she was in a better headspace than ever near the time of her death... could foul play have been involved? was she... murdered??

together, the living idol and the dead idol work on themselves, and the living idol uncovers the mystery of the ghost girl’s death.

Hiya Trin! I’d love the commentary on this bit from your one whumptober fic :D It hurts so much, Time’s rambling is just. hhhhhh. much ow.

As gently as possible he pushes Time back onto the log, even as the older hero tries to wrench himself out of his grip. Twilight can feel the panic building steadily within him like water boiling in a kettle. If he can just get him to settle down before it grows out of control…

“You can’t–” The old man gasps, breathless and trembling. “Twi..Twilight…I have to…No!”

Abruptly, he reels back. Before Twilight can react, a fist collides with his face. The rancher stumbles. His grasp slips. With surprising speed, Time lunges for his sword.

“Ganondorf is coming!”

The fear is blatantly visible on his face now, terror audible in his voice. Twilight freezes, hand stopping halfway through its journey to touch his newly bruised cheek.

He’s not the only one with the arm strength of a moblin, apparently.

“Sweet Ordona…”

Time whirls and the rancher is forced to leap out of the way of his sword’s reach.

“Have to get the sages, have to save Zelda…” He takes a stumbling step forward. A particularly violent shudder races through him and the weapon slips from his grip to land with a dull thump on the earthen ground. “Get to the castle….can’t lose this time–all going to die…what a terrible fate…”

Twilight ducks down and snatches Time’s claymore before he can reach for it again. At that moment, Wild scrambles up to his side.

“Here!” He grabs the sword and presses a potion into Twilight’s hands instead. “Lemme get this out of reach and I’ll come help you hold him down.”

Twilight nods. He clenches his hand around the bottle, forcing an inhale through his nose. Time’s words have cut him straight to the core and left him winded and shaky. Never before has he seen the old man this vulnerable, this scared. It just isn’t right, to see his mentor gaze at him like a child seeking refuge from the monsters that stalk the night.

…a child with the world on his small shoulders.

“Time.” His voice trembles the slightest bit and he clears his throat. “I need you to trust me.”

Time freezes before him, teeth chattering, breath coming on haggard half-gasps. He crosses his arms tightly over his chest.

“N-no.” He shakes his head. “Only have three days. The clock resets — e-everything’s over. Have to sta…start again and I can’t… please don’t make me.”

He’s speaking pure nonsense now — at least Twilight desperately hopes that’s what this is — but it’s enough to shatter his heart. What nightmares has the hero endured to inspire a plea like this? What secrets haunt him?

Ooh I had a lot of fun writing that part lol

So this fic — and this snippet — came out of a mixture of my combined mission to write what I want to read (which in this case was a Time sickfic XD) and to allow Time to be vulnerable. Because while none of the boys are particularly great at being vulnerable I feel like he’s one of the worst (in part because he kinda becomes their unofficial leader/parental figure leaving him no choice but to be strong). And what better way to get a guy to open up about all that juicy trauma than to give him a dangerously high fever? XD And if I could throw in some angst with Twilight (who I’ve realized during a recent reread doesn’t actually know much of Time’s backstory) learning in the worst way some of the stuff his mentor has endured? Even better.

So Twilight is thrown into this situation that no one wants to be in — seeing the terribly human weakness in someone they look up to. And I wanted him to see all of that weakness. I tend to forget how traumatizing OoT was for Time because Majora’s Mask’s creepy vibes made the haunting moments of that journey more prominent for me. But I made a point to make myself remember that here (hence the stuff about Ganondorf, the sages, and Zelda). Plus, at this point I headcanon that Time knows at least a little about the Downfall timeline and his fate in it. So, he references that too (saying that he can’t lose this time).

Basically, Time feels like a kid again. He’s scared, he thinks the sky’s gonna fall at any moment. But so does Twilight. Because here’s two extremes: the hero who soldiered on all day and the broken man who is still trying to save everyone despite being dangerously sick. It’s terrifying tbh. Plus this dude just punched him and he isn’t even sure what to think about that (besides OUCH and RUDE lol).

And Wild’s thrown through a loop too. He’s not as close to Time as Twilight is but they definitely are close. And he’s seeing some of himself in Time rn. He knows what it’s like to have your worst memories come back at the worst times. Which is why he immediately wants to jump in and help Twilight (he also feels bad his brother got punched lol).

Basically a bad time (hehe) for all

And Twilight’s definitely gonna have some questions for Time after this. He may not ask them outright (he doesn’t want to pry). But he always wondered what caused Time to become the Hero’s Shade and now he’s thinking…is all this crazy, nonsense-sounding stuff what basically tied him to this plane of existence? He needs some answers

Madeleine x Coward/Shy Reader

Pure, unrivaled fluff for our big light boi.

~| Absolutely 100% overprotective of you. It doesn’t even have to be with social interaction, if it has a 0.0001% chance of hurting you he will literally put you up and c a r r y until he’s sure you’re safe. If there’s a stray cakehound running up to you, even if it seems friendly, Madeleine would just pick you up and put you on his shoulders. He’s a very strong himbo boy, so he could do this easily with pretty much everyone. “Shoo, beast! You will not harm my lovely S/O!”

~| Madeleine is a complete extrovert and t h r i v e s on attention and social interaction, so he would be a bit confused when you don’t immedietly want to strike up a conversation with someone you met (the first time you met him you were probably a bit overwhelmed, due to his constant talking and complete lack of shyness). Though he may be confused, and occasionally push you out of your comfort zone, mostly on accident, he does try to understand where you’re coming from.

~| He loves to ramble. Loves it. When you two are alone, often he’ll just talk about random stuff to fill the silence. It may or may not annoy you, depending on how you feel, but occasionally you get things like “Whales swim, therefore they must be fish!” “Madeleine, wh-” [insert reader confusion here].

~| He loves it when you add onto his rambling. It can even be small comments, but he’ll grin at them. You actually listen to him! Wow! He sees this as one of the best types of bonding.

~| Madeleine is the king of PDA, and often finds it hard to not touch you in some way in public. It’s best to just let him hold your hand, he’ll be content enough with that. If he notices you’re feeling uncomfortable in a situation (which may take him a bit because d e n s e but, I mean, he’s trying), he’ll come up with some excuse- “Oh, I think I left my keys at home!” “I’m craving some Mac N’ Cheese.” “Oh no, I forgot to water the plants!”- and walk you back home, where he proceeds to ask what upset you. Will ask to cuddle every time no matter the outcome, and will 100% cuddle with you for hours until you have to practically beg for him to let you go.

~| Madeleine can cook! He knows how to make traditional meals and those sorts of things, but don’t trust him with the oven alone. He gets distracted very easily and something as simple as a frog “S/O! S/O! Come look! There’s a frog outside, it’s so adorable!” can distract him long enough to burn the food to cinders. As long as you remind him he has stuff in the oven, though, you can be well prepared to have a good lunch or supper. You may have to clean up after him, though, he tends to leave the kitchen messy. Anyways I’m getting off-track from the coward/shy reader bUT that came to my mind and had to put it there hh- back ontopic~

~| Other than a bit of confusion, he doesn’t care that you’re shy or a coward! He has enough radient confidence and bravery for both of you! He loves you because he loves you, not because you’re like him 💕.

~| I’ve seen a lot of people say this, but I’m gonna say it again. “Excuse me, they asked for no pickles.” is just such a Madeleine thing to say. He would literally be confident for you.

~| Often introduces you to everyone he meets in a very dramatic and doting fashion “I am Madeleine Cookie, and this is my lovely, most glorious darling I could ever hope for, S/O!” If you’re ever in a public situation he can’t get you out of, and he notices you’re getting tense, he will try and block out whatever is making you upset. He’ll just get in front of you and try to distract you, if all else fails.

~| If he notices you’ve been stressed lately, or if he just wants to, Madeleine Cookie will take you to the spa for the golden treatment. Massages, getting your nails done (he likes his painted black- he says they make him look mysterious- but he ends up subconciously picking to polish off after a while), just the whole shabang! He’ll even give you a personal massage if you ask for it!

~| He will never make you feel bad for asking him anything. He will do literally anything for you, just say the word! If you make self-degrading jokes about your shyness or about your cowardly nature, he will literally go on a rant about how you’re the best person he knows and how you’re perfect in every way. He will NEVER let self-degrading jokes slide. He loves you too much to see you hurting yourself, even verbally.

A gift from me to you!

It was a rainy day, which you were quite happy for. You were watching the light rain from your window, deep in thought, before you saw a figure coming up the stairs.

You started to panic a bit- had Madeleine invited someone over without telling you!? No, that wasn’t like him… was it a robber!?

But, as the figure aproached the door, you saw them pull off the water-proof hoodie they had been wearing, to reveal long locks of luxurious, blonde hair. You would recognize that hair anywhere.

Madeleine Cookie? He was inside just a minute ago! You glanced at the clock, freezing as you noticed just how long it had been since you last saw him- you must have been staring out this window for hours!

The door opened, and you looked over to see one very wet Madeleine Cookie with a large box in his arms.

“Madeleine?!”

“Yes, my dear! It is I!” Your loveable himbo said with a stupidly big grin. He took of the rain coat, shook out his soggy hair, and quickly made his way over to you.

“What’s that you have?” You question him, glancing at the box. You notice it has fairly large holes in the sides, though the inside is too dark for you to see what is inside.

“Merry Christmas!” Madeleine announces, to which you laugh. ”It’s the middle of July!”

“Eh, close enough! Close your eyes!” He demanded, and you happily did so, wondering what your big radiant light commander had gotten you this time. He had often given you gifts, one of your favorites were two necklaces that linked together by magnets to make a heart image. You rarely ever took it off (even if it did stay tucked in your shirt while you were out), and you weren’t sure Madeleine had taken his off either.

Your ears strained as you heard him open the box, and in a second, you felt something very fluffy and very energetic in your arms.

“Madeleine, you didn’t…” you said, your eyes still closed as he yelled “Surprise!”

You opened your eyes to find a very golden and very happy-looking puppy in your arms. You’re nearly breathless as it gives a yip, leaning up to lick your face.

“I hope you like him!” Madeleine says, ”I thought if you had both him and I with you when we go out, maybe you would be a little more comfortable!”

“Oh, he’s perfect, Madeleine! Thank you!” You pace over to him, the pup still in your hands, and give him a side-hug as not to drop the pupster. He wraps an arm around you, using his other hand to ruffle the puppy’s head, to which the golden dog gave a small ruff and leaned his head back. You heard Madeleine laugh as the pup furiously assaulted his hand with licks, and then he spoke once more.

“So, what are you gonna name him?”

OKAY SO, these people are Cosmicco (on the left) and Mist-Jun (on the right)!

(Excuse the crude doodles but I assume I have tons of drawings of them posted so you've probably seen them before xP)

And they look human, right? Or, at least, mainly human? Well, (dun, dun, DUN!!) they're not! They're (and a lot of my other ocs but this is about Mist and Co 😇) a magical species called Starions!

(It's a play-on-words of the word "star-crossed!" Hehe, don't ask...)

Cosmicco has reactive powers (to be exact, it's a cross between Earth powers and Fire powers but... Way more explosive. She's vulnerable to fire cuz of how reactive fire also is. It can like... Make her literally implode.) and Mist-Jun controls the wind/air. Mist is weak to thunder/electric powers cuz yk... Electrocution.

They look human but are actually just elemental spirits that possess human bodies. However, that's not all bad cuz, without their human emotions, they could only feel fear and m u r d e r n e s s. However, their elemental forms can still be "unlocked" if they are exposed to high levels of elemental "particles" or corruption.

So... Wanna see their "true elemental" forms? Also, sorry for using Gacha Club but it's honestly good for mapping designs–-

This is --true elemental form-- Cosmicco! She's faceless/expressionless and it's unknown if she has eyes under her flower crown or she simply never had eyes. Every time something should kill her, all that happens is that another flower blooms someone around her head/eyes. The middle parts of each of the flowers actually act as eyes. So she has hundreds of eyes

She barely has a soul of her own in this form so that's why ghosts control her (or she controls ghosts) and she can mimic anyone's appearance that she has collected enough data on while she's in this form.

She, of course, cannot talk; she has no mouth. To work around that, whenever she tries to communicate, she exaggerates gestures and such like a speechless cartoon character xD. Oh yeah, and she moves like a zombie–-

Cuz, yk, she's either completely mindless or constantly possessed–-

This is --true elemental form-- Mist-Jun! Fun fact: Starions have "levels" of magic. Mist-Jun has an extremely high level. Naturally, he's very powerful–-

In his non-true-elemental-form, he already has wings but I wanted to make his wings even more obvious in his finale form xD

He also basically has razor blades on his fingers cuz he's part-cat–-

And no, he can't talk. He can only make roars and screams and such.

And there's them :D! So uh, yeah, Cosmicco certainly seems more interesting than Mist-Jun... Still, I really like Mist's glowing eyes, OKAY–-

Trust me, Mist-Jun is more interesting than her! Just... Not by true elemental form–-

I'm only half happy with their designs... They're meant to look inhuman and magical but they just look like edgy anime characters... Especially Cosmicco's...

Also yes, their normal colour schemes are different than the representative colours of their powers. Ik it looks cursed but that's what I was going for–-

i do know that when my fam started watching lcdp at first i was so put off. like i watched ep 1 and the prof creeped me out. ""berlin"" creeped me out. e v e r y o n e creeped me out. and i was cringing so hard becz of the short lived romance angle with alison parker. i literally did not watch s1 at all xcept for like sneak peeks. highlights being the scene where berlin discovers monica is alive and does his dramatic door by door thing? that was so SUSPENSEFUL even tho i had no idea what was going on. DOMINGO DE RESURECCION remains forever iconic.

2/? And OF COURSE the group bella ciao dance when they hit earth (hahah i thought the banda were actually like a "found family where they all love each other LOL") i am a SUCKER for found family. but anyhoo when i properly got intrigued was s2 when tokyo was kicked out (the music from that scene is still my favourite) it's just so dramatic..!! why am i telling u all this again? right, i haven't slept a wink and it's nearly 7 am pls forgive me if these rambles make no sense. i have a point with this.. i'm going somewhere

RIGHT. so when the fam actually rewound the ep cz i wanted to know WHY berlin did that (didn't fully realise how batsht crazy he can be), the russian roulette scene played. and pedro's acting. MAN. and like just that ep they made a point of showing us these flashbacks where sergio and andrés hug....

Hi anon! Thanks for stopping by- sorry took me a while to get back to you, will do my best to answer this string of messages (got all 4 parts)! Glad you like my thoughts XD

Firstly, I believe Andres/Sergio would be the biggest LCDP ship if the writers were evil enough to wait until s5 to reveal that they’re brothers asdfasdf. They’re already the two most popular male characters anyway. 

It’d be especially crazy because it’s not like they tell the actors these things beforehand either. So that means there’d probably be a Serdres vs Berlermo vs Serquel fight every 5 minutes. I mean, even if not everyone agrees on everything in the lcdp fandom, it’s the most “peaceful” one I’ve ever been in because no character really gets in the way of any other ship (like even with helermo and berlermo there’s no true conflict since Andres is dead). But with Serdres in the mix?? CATASTROPHE. Everyone out here writing essays about how much of a bastard/bitch/homewrecker/motherfucker that Andres or Sergio or Martin or Raquel is. Never a moment’s peace!! so basically, a regular fandom lmao.

Then when we find out they’re brothers, it goes from catastrophe to Apocalypse. Suddenly serquel and berlermo have the upper hand. Everyone would double down and harass the crew/cast into whatever’s going on.  Plot-wise, everything is the same though, just without Andres calling Sergio “hermanito.” Fandom however, would be a minefield! And I’m glad that’s not the case because I’d probably be an unfortunate serdres shippers XD No joke, my mother and I thought they were a couple in S1. So bullet dodged!

Secondly: haha, everyone creeped me out in S1 too, especially Berlin, I hated him, but thinking back, I think I mostly hated the fact that I didn’t hate him as much as I should have. I’ve made peace with it now but oh boy, was he a controversial figure in my head. I actually like the professor on sight though! IDK why, maybe because I thought his plans were cool or because of Alvaro’s delivery. I was afraid of an Alison Parker romance thing too- like, I do feel like she had a storyline that got dropped, but that part was quite cringey and overall unnecessary to the plot. Same with Ariadna, which was even cringier and even Less necessary to the plot. 

Domingo de resurrecion was iconic though yes! And even with all that said, I genuinely enjoyed parts 1 and 2 because it was so different from anything else I’d seen. Not content wise, but maybe tonally? IDK, they were just really bold with a lot of things, like being objectively unafraid of having the protagonists (plural because all of them did LMAO) do objectively shitty things. Really kept me in suspense from beginning to end! 

I’m usually a big fan of found families too! The funny thing is, then banda never struck me as a “family” until season 3. In 1 and 2, I was wondering what felt different about this show; then it hit me that these people remained colleagues to the end. Like, they backstabbed each other (repeatedly) and everyone was quite selfish, and only the bonds that were already there stuck. They were the opposite of a found family LOL But I think by S3, they went down the found family route and I didn’t mind because it makes quite a lot of sense for them to feel that bond after the Mint heist and almost dying/living together (and having witnessed 3 deaths together on the team). But I still doubt Berlin and Palermo were ever really part of this found family, with good reason XD

LOL the scene where Tokyo got kicked out is also among my favorites!! It was so funny and dramatic, and it was like, wow we can go anywhere with this now! Don’t worry- your rambles and thoughts are always welcome :D

I’m rolling over how you watched the Tokyo expulsion scene before the Russian Roulette scene haha. Also yes, PEDRO. Berlin may have been “controversial” to me at first, but I became Pedro’s fan from day one! Also the Hug is probably what made me like Berlin (despite my determination to hate him rip) in the first place. 

3/? ... and like now that i think about it... tokyo had real guts huh. like she KNEW berlin was close enough to el prof to know his name (fhshshs imagine if she'd heard andrés saying 'hermanito' it's unrealistic that she didn't TBH. i mean obviously they decided to make them brothers only towards the end but like in canon universe. how tf did andrés de 'i raised my bby brother since he was 12 and i'd actually die for him and his stupidly brilliant plans' fonollosa go 5 months without slipping up once and calling sergio hermanito. or like,,, i like to imagine sergio kinda gave him lots of leeway(?) sergio's a lil oblivious too but like i'm sure half of it is.. that's my dumbass older bro shut up i'm not being partial you all have city names .. andr-berlin, pass the salt. like OOF. + sergio also knew his big bro was dYiNG so like. i'm sure they were sneaking in some quality time (i hope they did 😭 gosh imagine if sergio really did not ever consider the possibility of andrés dying in the heist so he'd tell himself he needs to perfect the plan now & anyway he'll have enough time to spend w/ his brother post heist in philippines. and then ... that happened :/

Tokyo has guts in place of braincells you bet that she’d do something like this, consequences be damned XD I also think it’s unrealistic for Andres not to slip up, but I have a feeling nobody besides Tokyo really tried to spy on them in private. I headcanon that Andres instead slips up and does things like ruffle Sergio’s hair or adjust his tie when other people are around. I also think Tokyo was convinced that they were a gay couple when she saw them hug XD And if Sergio never went on to tell the banda that Berlin was his brother, everyone would be giving Palermo such awkward looks after Nairobi accused him of being in love with Berlin LMAO. 

I agree! I also imagine Sergio giving Andres leeway because he’s just so used to interacting with his brother that way haha. So either he’d go out of his way to ignore Berlin in front of everyone else or IDK, borderline telepathically communicate with him. I actually do think Sergio never considered the possibility of Andres dying in the heist because he was just that confident in his own plan. Plus, Andres was probably the one person he expected to survive. And a lot of it has to do with Sergio’s attachment to him + Andres’ own habit of downplaying any illness/injury over the years, which I think is safe to believe canon. He was really in no condition to be in the heist, let alone lead it. Just the fact that he needs to take those injections is a big sign that he shouldn’t be there, but Sergio didn’t catch it because he’s human and blinded by faith :’) So yeah, I think Sergio was planning to spend proper time with Andres in Palawan and at Toledo, they just settled for those little moments by the fireplace. 

4/? what always also just GETS me in the feels is that el prof was shown to be this in control creepily calm dude who is miles ahead of everyone. + in the 1st Toledo class itself we see how detached,, like how impersonal he is, how professional - choosing frickin CITY NAMES?! no 'personal relationships' ? (after recruiting his older brother, a father son pair, and war cousins... oh sergio 😂 he's such a frickin nerd and i love him) but like the earlier seasons really emphasised how robotic and down right COLD he can be. it still sometimes bothers me that he put the button in the car. he lead the police to his own damn brother, his blood, who took care of him and adopted him and was terminally ill and like - UGH i try to rationalise that sergio is that cold and unbothered. or that he has strict morals. but it still bothers me becz that button really sort of tipped andres' already unstable sanity. like andrés tells denver someth like you've robbed my future and after that he just seems so much more suicidal and accepting that he can't get out of the mint alive - WHY SERGIO WHY. I KNOW THAT AT THAT POINT YOU BASICALLY DIDN'T KNOW ANDRÉS WAS GOING TO BE YOUR BROTHER YET BECZ IT WASN'T WRITTEN IN THE SCRIPT BUT WHYYYYY

That’s so funny to me too LMAO No personal relationships, then he recruits these guys. Sergio, hello?? Also can’t forget how he just recruited his own girfrleind in the second heist too. Buddy! Love this nerd.

I don’t think that cold aspect of Sergio went away in later seasons either; he just had more opportunity to show a more open side of himself + without Andres, he had to metaphorically leave his comfort zone without a safety net. But in earlier seasons, he really did seem heartless at times XD Then again, we can argue that the same goes for Andres.

To be fair, I didn’t feel sorry for Andres over the button thing lol, but once the brothers reveal happened and all of Alvaro/Pedro’s headcanons came out and we know everything Andres did for Sergio, it makes what Sergio did REALLY harsh. We really just have to explain it through Sergio’s strict morals and him believing this to be the best non-fatal punishment for Andres, who at that point had convinced him he killed a hostage. And because he knew the television interview was coming up, maybe Sergio assumed Andres would use it to “clear” his name anyway. And empathy isn’t one of Sergio’s strong suits either, so through that lens, I can rationalize it.

Also it was lowkey funny to me how Andres was there like DENVER MUST DIE until he found out Sergio put the button there, then he was like “oh hermanito, you and your practical jokes <3″

Still, like you said, Andres and Sergio weren’t brothers yet at this point. They were probably supposed to be lovers lmao and had a dysfunctional Hannibal Lecter x Will thing going on. But because they made #hermanos canon, that button moment just feels very out of place now, especially given how much the two genuinely love each other.

Guess we could also say that Sergio’s just generally kinda bratty with Andres XD Like, he knows no matter what, Andres would forgive him anything. That’s how I see it anyway!

Okay, so. Both covers are excellent but THAT AMY REEDER VARIANT.

I love it. Want it framed on my wall. Slapped on a t-shirt. Set it as my lock screen. E V E R Y T H I N G. XD

It illustrates the whole dynamic of the book so well and Reeder’s style is perfectly suited for the characters. (She did the recent Amethyst series so it’s not surprising that this has such a nice blend of like, fantasy and space.)

King mentioned a dinosaur planet on a podcast so I assume this is the dino world issue. 

When I first saw the cover I didn’t realize Kara was passed out, I just thought she was frowning. Which did make for a hilarious contrast, Ruthye being like, ‘!!!!!!!!!’ and Kara just mildly annoyed like, ‘aw shoot.’ XD

Solicit Text: “Supergirl steps into an ancient trap, stranding her and Ruthye on a planet of nearly perpetual night. Now, the woman of steel must call on every remaining ounce of strength to combat the monsters left on this world to kill any super unlucky enough to end up on its surface.”

I am INTRIGUED, specifically about the two of them ending up on a world of perpetual night! Obviously from an art/coloring perspective, that’s gonna be interesting, to see how it looks.

Another interesting thing: King keeps throwing Kara into situations where she’s depowered/running on fumes. I remember the Andreyko run teased a Kara who’d have to rely on her wits, out in the cosmos, but then it was sorta walked back because Kara’s suit had like. Solar energy stored in it. (Which was cool! But undermined the set-up.)

Not too much else to report, by way of news/updates.

The colors put out such intense Treasure Planet vibes, IMO. It’s the purple/yellow/green, as well as some of the shape language, I guess?

The bit about Kara explaining that simply listening to an individual’s heart rate won’t actually tell her if they’re lying, because aliens don’t necessarily all have the same baseline in terms of what is/isn’t normal. LOVE. THAT.

As said, I’ll save further rambling for an actual issue 3 post.

okay i still have not Recovered from always find me here. like not even a LITTLE because holy fuck. I like giving myself emotional logistical puzzles to try and write my way out of but oh my god. I’m waiting for the dust in my brain to settle a bit before calling it, but I’m pretty sure this is the hardest writing puzzle I’ve ever actually gotten to the end of????

like genuinely WHAT WAS I THINKING trying to write a fic where they die every 4-400 words? and all of the deaths have to Bad but some of them have to be Worse and the Worse ones need to escalate and they’re in a super complicated emotional place at the start of the loop and her emotional state resets EVERY TIME but he remembers all of the loops and everything about the premise is traumatic and the level of intensity starts at like, a 9.5 and K E E P S  G E T T I N G  W O R S E god WHY. WHY?!

so a few notes from the Experience:

1. the first thing I did was figure out what I was going to use as my “I got you babe” start of the loop cue. And I knew from the moment my stupid brain went from “groundhog day au” to “okay but trial by combat groundhog day au???” that the loop had to be TIGHT and inescapable so that meant it wouldn’t start with him waking up that day. I also needed it to be SHORT (cause it was going to be said a LOT), and i needed it to be a throw away phrase that would get increasingly unsettling to hear in the context of, you know, brutal death and then restarting the loop, but also something i could repurpose later on. I had “lovely day for it” in place by the end of my first brainstorming session. This was the only easy piece of the puzzle to solve.

2. all I did for the first week was write scenes that made me cry. I had no plan. No structure. Nothing. I just wrote and I cried. For a week.

3. I had a list of Problems and one of them was just “TIME” because time is a problem in at least five different ways and I had to solve all of them and how on earth was I going to simultaneously show Jaime’s descent into the depths of the infinite loops while also having some understanding of how Brienne was experiencing time while also having the plot progress?????? (catch me literally defining how Jaime experiences time now in contrast to how Brienne is at once point. XD)

4. I had the ending in place super early. like within the first couple days. I always knew where I was going, i just had to figure out how to get there.

5. please don’t expect another fic like this soon or ever it took everything. EVERYTHING. I used every tool, trick, and skill I have to get to the end of this one and I honestly can’t believe I did it.

And a couple spoilery ones under the cut.


6. I was despairing pretty hard about the hell i had put myself in and somewhere near the end of week two my brain finally FINALLY came through and was like “this is how you do this: It’s five stages of grief fic.”That’s the structure. Denial. Anger. Bargaining. Depression. Acceptance. That’s the fic. Figuring that out gave me what I needed to start putting the absolute hellish collection of scenes I had created into an order that had a narrative. And it gave me the power to go through a section in the middle and cut every line that was too hopeful because Jaime was about to hit the depression stage and I needed to Feel It.

7. the hardest I’ve ever cried writing something is the “that will have to be enough.” to “this is enough” sequence. (relatedly, its also my fave part bc what’s the point if I’m not emotionally compromised?)

I don’t read the manga, but I can give you my opinion on the ships based on the games and my hc personalities for them. Sorry that they won’t match the manga personalities, since I really don’t know how they are written in manga. But I’ll try it out with their game counterparts and hope you find it interesting somehow. ^^

First thing I had to search all the names in bulbapedia to find who those are counterparts of, but if something turned out wrong, forgive me!

Silver x Gold OK, I give this one an A, and the only reason it’s not above that is because I prefer Lyra (Kotone, whose manga counterpart seems to be Crystal, same as Kris’) over Ethan and I kinda like shipping her with Silver more. As I said once, Lyra is my favorite playable character in Pokémon so far, mostly for emotional reasons, and I’ve written a huge chunk of unfinished fanfiction about her and Silver. Still, I hc that Silver did have a crush on Ethan (that is, Hibiki - Gold) before starting to like her. So Yeah, I kinda low-key ship them as well. XD

Silver x Blue (girl) OK, I didn’t know there was a girl named Blue in Pokémon at all, the only blue that I’ve ever known of was the rival from PKM RGB and remakes... According to what I found, she’s the counterpart for Leaf (kinda?) or Green... And I totally don’t know this character well enough or care much about her, so... I’ll have to give this one N/A: I don’t know the ship well enough. Sorry :/

Ruby x Sapphire (Steven Universe Joke Steven Universe Joke Steven Universe Joke Steven Universe Joke Stev...) SO..... *cleaning throat*. Even though even in game there’s an effort to make a romantic tension go on between May (Haruka - Sapphire) and Brendan (Yūki - Ruby), I can’t help but give this ship an E - I don’t really like it. The reason is the most stupid one in the Universe, I suppose, but... When I played ORAS (as May) I found Brendan really annoying and the fact that he kept coming after me all the time was like “uh, take a hint, I’m not interested” (not that the game character could know that so this is totally irrational) and i HATED the fact that the game would force me to give him the tickets to the meteor shower instead of letting me give them to another character I liked more, like... Lisia (Lutia) or Wally (Mitsuru), or Steven (Daigo), or Archie (Aogiri), or Wallace (Mikuri), or Maxie (Matsubusa - and like, I played Alpha Sapphire so Maxie barely was there but STILL...), or freaking SIDNEY (Kagetsu) OR LITERALLY ANYONE ELSE... (anyway sorry). So yeah, I was a bit annoyed by the fact that the game wanted to convince me of a romantic tension between a character I didn’t even like much and the character I was playing with and ended up projecting myself into... Specially because my ultimate crush was Lisia (Lutia) and I ship her with May to this day, because that was the relationship I was really rooting for in that game!!! XD I’ve been rambling for several minutes and I totally lost track of any attempt to create an argument here, but I suppose you can see why I don’t really like this ship in the end...

Diamond x Pearl (STEVEN UNIVERSE JOKE STEVEN UNIVERSE JOKE STEVEN UNIVERSE J...) NOW THIS is a completely different story here! When I saw this, I totally though Pearl was the counterpart for Dawn (Hikari), so I was like “sigh, I’ll have to tell them I don’t like this ship ag-” and then I looked it up and AAAAAH PEARL IS BARRY (Jun)!!!!! YES!!! YEEEEES!!! THIS IS AN A+++++++++ TOTALLY OTP!!! I absolutely adore Barry in every possible way and Lucas is my second favorite Pokémon playable character, so I totally ship them! I was actually writing a fanfiction that was mostly about Cyrus, but Lucas, Dawn and Barry were a part of it, and I liked to write a romantic tension going on between Barry and Lucas, because I love the idea of them getting together once they get a bit older! So yeah, A+ for sure! :D

N x White Oh, well, what can I say? XD That’s another A+ right here! OTP! ^^ As you know, I ship them, and I’m planning on one day making it happen in my comics, it’s just kinda very far from happening right now. But I want it to happen eventually!!! I just think I need a long way until N is ready and Hilda gets slightly older in my hc. Anyway, I love this ship, I completely agree with it, and I do see romantic tension between them in game, but this time it’s a ship I like (unless in ORAS) so I appreciate it! haha! ^^ *For those who don’t know, White is Hilda’s manga counterpart (And Hilda is Touko’s English name).

OK, those were my grades for the ships! ^^ Again, I know that it’s not the same as rating the characters from the manga, because I suppose they probably have different traits and personalities there, but... It’s what I can do! Thanks a lot for sending your ships! :D

[[BTW, for the Steven Universe gang, I have to mention that my grades for the respective SU ships would be inverted from the grades I gave to the characters here that have the same names as SU characters... I love Ruby x Sapphire (and I love Garnet) and it’s totally an A+! But I don’t really like Pearl x (Pink) Diamond, because I think it was a really toxic relationship for Pearl (also wouldn’t ship her with any other diamond btw), so yeah, that would be an E]].

what's your fav memory from your minky momo canon?

Oh gosh!! This is gonna be really hard since my Minky Momo canon is one that I have soso many happy and amazing memories of so I might just ramble about a few of my top favorite ones I can think of!

(To clarify, I'll be mainly talking about the canon where my pendant didn't break and I didn't lose my powers since i have a stronger connection with that one)

Since we actually used the money my earth mama and papa to take a train instead of using the Gourmet Pop (a memory that in itself is very detailed so i wont go too deep about it here), we kept the Gourmet Pop long enough to learn that it was fueled by hopes and dreams and the "gas tank" refilled itself whenever my pendant shined so whenever me and the animal trio (Sindbook, Mocha n Pipil) had the opportunity to drive it around town, Mocha would always turns its radio to his favorite music (he liked loud and fast music like old school hip hop and rock) and I would just let the wind blow into my hair and bop my head to the music (once i even wore bright pink sunglasses during our drive XD)

One time when Princess Lei came to visit me at home (she wanted to check in on me after the events of La Rhode in my Dream), we rode around on one of her huge dinosaur friends around the grass fields I took rest stops at and we got to watch the sunset on a T-Rex's head

When I was around 12 years old (when I first came to earth for my mission I was 10 years old), the school I went to was having a talent show and I signed up to sing. When I performed that night, it was the very first time my pendant shined just once to have a crystal appear on the crown and I later found out that was because I realized in that moment what my own dream was and that I helped myself find it (yeah I became a singer in both of my canons)

There was a time where I helped an autistic girl with socializing and making friends, when we were at the water fountain helping the girl introduce herself to a group of kids, Mocha started to point out to me that my spinning and movements that I do during my transformations and my trouble and lack of focus in school and how I don't exactly understand all social cues/expectations was very similar to how the girl described her autism to us earlier when we just started helping her. At first I didnt really believe him because I thought since I was more outgoing, that couldnt be it. But once I understood that all autistic people are different in their own way, I pretty much accepted it with open arms!

God I am soso sorry for rambling on for so long and gave out more than one memory but I still you find entertainment in this at the very least!

My favorite work of yours is still EML even though I've gone through most of your work by now lol. The quality of the plot and character development is just so amazing. Like, it shows in your other works too, but I feel that EML is just a perfect example of how much care you put into your work and how much insight you have into the characters in your works. Truth is also up there bc it broke me when I first read it holy shit it was angst city 😭 n e ways all your writing is amazing💓💓💓

I believe I was very lucky to have that much inspiration for EML, to find the right words, have ideas for the best scenes and emotions and how they should be conveyed in order to drive the character development further. It also allowed me to grow as a writer and see what I can/can’t do within a fic and so on and so forth...

Oh my, Hanahaki - Truth! I’m really glad you think so! It was my very first attempt at the trope of the Hanahaki Disease and it certainly won’t be my last :D I have to see though if I really want to dip my toes into the torrent of “Angst/No Comfort” though xD There will be happy endings in this house ONLY!

What Makes Purple Boy so Weird?: Notes on the storytelling strategies employed in Shinsou’s introduction arc

*By ‘weird,’ I mean intriguing/interesting, but in a break-the-mold kinda way.

This really has no objective other than I wanted to break down what makes Shinsou’s intro arc so impactful. Specifically, the buildup before his quirk reveal.

As heroic and well-intentioned as our boy is, the creators do a very good job creating an air of ominous suspense before revealing his true character and quirk in his match against Deku. Up till then, it’s like they wanted us to think Shinsou was a bad guy...

Part commentary, part analysis 

Just kinda… finding an excuse to rewatch the Sports Festival arc while focusing on Shinsou’s perspective.

this post goes from his first appearance in episode 15 to the beginning of episode 20

in the future, I plan on dedicating an entire post just to his fight against Deku - but in the meantime, this one centers on the buildup before his quirk reveal

So, if you’re interested, read on! If not, I understand. This is gonna be one heckin nerdy ramble. oh gosh im so excited

First Appearance: Episode 15: Roaring Sports Festival 

Confrontation with Bakugo

First, some background on what’s going on right before our boy shows up: The day after Aizawa introduces the sports festival, a bunch of kids from the general studies department show up at the hero class’s threshold, right? There’s no explanation as to why. They’re all kinda just... there (psst it’s for the drama. Large crowds create intrigue.)

Dekusquad mutters collectively, wondering if the general studies kids are scouting the competition… The general studies kids don’t really answer or react. They just keep gawking awkwardly. (psst once again: it’s purely for the drama)

Enter: Bakugo. Trying to leave for the day, but those damn gen studies kids are in his way.

“Move it, extras.”

This prompts a reaction. From one student, at least. 

“So this is Class 1-A? I heard you guys were impressive, but you just sound like an ass.”

First time we see Shinsou: pushing his way unapologetically through the other general studies kids. First impression: he already kinda looks like a jerk. Him being at the back of the crowd also makes me think Shinsou didn’t exactly jump at the chance to size up 1-A after school like his classmates, but eventually gave in and followed them over a bit later. Then after that “extras” comment out of Blasty Boy, he decided to retaliate. A jerk with a bit of a proud streak.

”Scouting the competition? Maybe some of my peers are, but I came to let you know that if you don’t bring your very best, I’ll steal your spot right out from under you. Consider this a declaration of war.”

What a drama queen.

That’s all he says. That pretty much concludes his first notable appearance as a character

His appearance essentially serves two purposes: 1) to (fleetingly) introduce him as a character 2)  to establish how resentful the general studies department is towards 1-A

It’s important to note that he didn’t get any of those usual name + quirk tag thingies that occasionally pop up whenever a new character is introduced (or as a reminder for recurring characters)

AND he never introduces himself (he just straight up declares war and falls silent, the little shit xD)

Point being, forget his quirk, we don’t even learn his name right away. For all intents and purposes, he’s just that random purple asshole who declared war for no good reason

And as soon as Shinsou delivers his little war monologue, Tetsutetsu shows up, shouting loud and a n g e r y. His and Bakugo’s little shouting match quickly overshadows Shinsou’s cold declaration, making it even easier for both the other characters and the audience to forget about Shinsou pretty quick. Despite that very conspicuous purple hair, the chronic insomnia, and the WHITE PUPILS.

I know I kinda forgot about him - the first time watching, at least.

Sports Festival Opening Ceremony

The next time we see Shinsou, he’s walking into the arena with the other 1-C kids, who are all looking pretty dejected about being forced to participate in a competition rigged to make them look inferior:

“We’re just here to make [the hero kids] look better...”

“Yeah, I can’t wait for this to be over...”

It’s a key reminder that Shinsou is one of these kids, and by all logic should be thinking the same thing. But his expression is hard to read: 

Is he bored? Tired? Ready for it all to be over like those other kids? Or is he steeling himself to make good on his declaration of war?

We don’t really get a chance to find out. Not until MUCH later...

Todoroki’s Ice Trick

The next shot we see of Shinsou is my absolute FAVORITE. After getting through the tunnel to the obstacle course, Todoroki uses ice attack. It’s super effective, but somehow there’s still plenty of students who dodged it including our boy Shinsou

A LOT is going on. We see shots of all the different students who evaded Todoroki: Yaoyorozu, Bakugo, Aoyama (lol), Ashido... the montage ends with Uraraka, who makes a comment about waiting for the right time to show off her quirk, and hence alludes to someone else who’s trying to be sneaky:

“So they are good at using their powers, huh?”

What I love most about this scene is first time watching I LITERALLY DID NOT QUESTION the fact that he was being carried by three other students

I chalked it up to him being a charismatic figure in his class who somehow convinced his fellow students to carry him as part of some elaborate grand strategy

And hey... I wasn’t wrong?

Also interesting to note how none of the three non-brainwashed students around him seem too concerned he’s hitching a free ride on their classmates... they’re all too busy dealing with Todoroki’s ice

Point being, between Todoroki’s flashy ice attack and the other students’ equally flashy evasive maneuvers, it was pretty easy for us as an audience to overlook that one purple-haired kid who decided to play cavalry battle a little early. The inclusion of the extra kids stumbling around him in the frame also helps him blend into the background. All this seems very intentional on both the animators’/Horikoshi’s part AND as part of Shinsou’s grand strategy. 

Episode 15 ends with us still wondering what this guy’s deal is...

Episode 16: In Their Own Quirky Ways

We don’t see Shinsou at all this episode, which both builds up the suspense and leaves me with a lot of questions:

Q: How did he get past the robots? (Theory 1: By using other kids’ quirks and directing them like his own personal quirk army 2: (more likely) waited till a path was clear and ran through)

Q: How did he get past the chasm? (Theory 1: Again, by hitching a ride with a kid with the ideal quirk 2: Human rope?)

Q: How’d he get past the MINES?! (Theory: By brainwashing other students to walk ahead of him and clear a path)

Regardless of how he got through the course, the ONLY glimpse of Shinsou we get is when Midnight goes over the rankings in the race. Shinsou came in 27th, by the way, not that you’d even notice because the camera cuts off almost before you even see him in the rankings. (I couldn’t even pause it that fast) I have no idea if that was intentional or not, but man does it fit the mood:

This is also the first time we see his name.

But it’s so fast literally no one could’ve actually read and retained it without the help of a quirk. I know I didn’t. BUT I remember from the first time watching, this one tiny glimpse of the random purple asshole with the derpy ass smile ranking so high was enough to make me start wondering just what this guy’s deal was...

It was enough to get me curious. But I wasn’t invested quite yet. 

Also, in retrospect, my absolute favorite thing about this screenshot is all the other contestants look angry/disappointed by their ranking EXCEPT FOR SHINSOU. Nope, he just looks like a smug little asshole happy to be the ONLY rep from Class 1-C.

And that further adds to the suspense...

Episode 17: Strategy, Strategy, Strategy

Once again, we only get glimpses of Shinsou this episode. But they’re crucial: 

1: Him smirking as the rules for the cavalry battle are explained. Makes us wonder, as an audience: why does he look so confident when everyone else is gritting their teeth over this? What advantage does he have?

(Notes brought to you by 20/20 hindsight: He was probably so confident because he literally had his pick of teammates. As soon as he asked anyone about teaming up and they answered, boom, they were on the team. I would guess he intentionally picked teammates that wouldn’t stand out (no offense Aoyama,) so he could hang around and not call attention to himself during the cavalry battle, both from other teams and from the commentators.)

AND WAIT. LOOK HERE:

2: Once all the teams have coalesced, they’re all just kinda standing around haphazardly, or facing each other slightly to talk strategy... BUT NOT SHINSOU’S. They’re all facing the same direction he is. Yep, you guessed it... they’re already brainwashed.

3:

At the ready with his team. This also marks the second time we see his name. But it’s not announced, it only appears in tiny letters/kanji in the scoring bracket. Also note that his teammates are definitely all brainwashed now, but we wouldn’t be able to tell unless we were looking for it. Aoyama really doesn’t look too different lol

4:

Before the episode ends, we get our first glance at the scoreboard. The game’s already been underway for a bit by now, and Shinsou’s team is at 0 points. Which means Shinsou most likely let Monoma take his bandana to avoid being targeted later in the game, and therein, avoid attention.

End of episode 17. Still no name (unless you were super attentive), and no quirk.

Episode 18: Cavalry Battle Finale

Between the Todoroki vs. Midoriya and the Monoma vs. Bakugo showdowns, there’s so much drama happening it’s no surprise Present Mic didn’t pay much attention to Team Shinsou...

...and that really left me wondering... What were they up to this whole time?

Quick glance at the scoreboard tells us he’s still at zero, and he stays that way for most of the episode again:

BUT. WAIT FOR IT.

HERE’S THE SCOREBOARD RIGHT AFTER PRESENT MIC ANNOUNCED THERE WERE ONLY 11 SECONDS LEFT:

TETSUTETSU STILL HAS HIS POINTS.

Which means...

TEAM SHINSOU MANAGED TO SWIPE THE POINTS IN LESS THAN 11 SECONDS.

Just look how smug he is about it too:

“In third place is Team Tetsute- wait, what?! It’s Team Shinsou! When did they come back from the dead?!”

Point being, Present Mic is so surprised by Shinsou’s comeback he almost says the wrong name. Thanks to all the drama radiating off of Monoma and the Traffic Light Trifecta and Shinsou’s strategy of staying out of the fray until the last possible second, he pulled off a victory without anyone even knowing who the heck he is or what he can do.

This also marks the first time his name is stated clearly enough to catch.

Also note his confused (and frightened) teammates behind him. How ominous...

Little by little, we’re getting hints at who he actually is as a character, which up to this point, still looks a lot like ‘first class jerk’

Episode 19: The Boy Born with Everything

Okay, here’s where things get  s u p e r  dramatic. 

First half of the episode is dedicated to Todoroki and Deku’s little confrontation, so gives us more time to forget about our purple son...

Second half jumps into discussing the next round: sixteen contestants remaining, waiting to be divided into one-on-one matches. Things are progressing smoothly until....

OJIRO WITHDRAWS. 

Everyone’s shocked, why the heck would this kid pass up on the chance of a lifetime? Ojiro explains it’s a matter of pride for him:  “It just wouldn’t be right. I barely remember anything from the cavalry battle until the very end of it. I… think it was that guy’s quirk.”

“Wait, who was Ojiro with again?” 

Again, no one seems to remember. But once Ojiro points him out, the camera pans over to Shinsou, who looks away. As if he’s worried about getting exposed. Interestingly enough, however, Ojiro doesn’t immediately reveal what Shinsou’s quirk is (which also might have to do with his personal honor code), instead just presses to withdraw:

“Everyone gave their all in Round 2, but I was just someone’s puppet. I don’t want to advance if I don’t even know how I got here.”

‘Someone’s puppet’? That’s ominous as hell...  but once again, it doesn’t fully reveal what Shinsou did. Ojiro could’ve been speaking metaphorically for all we know at this point. But it sure makes us start wondering what the heck’s up with this purple guy, and just what his true motives are...

Later on, once the full bracket’s announced, Izuku looks at the lineup. He’s initially more concerned about the prospect of facing down Todoroki, but then he remembers he’s got a whole match ahead of that: “First I’ve got to worry about this Shinsou guy (whoever the hell he is...)” As someone who  l o v e s  to collect and analyse data on heroes and quirks, it probably bothers Izuku to no end that he knows absolutely nothing about his upcoming opponent. 

“Izuku Midoriya, that is you, isn’t it?”

To top it off, SHINSOU SNEAKS UP ON HIM. I mean, in all fairness, it probably isn’t even that hard to sneak up on Izuku, given how lost in his head he gets. But again, it helps build that aura of suspense: Shinsou’s the type of character to sneak up on people. He’s also the type to stay out sight, use clever strategy instead of shine in the limelight like a typical hero in the BNHA world would. In all fairness, he’s acting a lot like a villain would.

Izuku: “You’re the guy from before, from general studies?”

Shinsou: “A pleasure. So, are you excited?”

Once again. Doesn’t even properly introduce himself. What is with this guy and introductions? And before Izuku gets a chance to respond, Ojiro intervenes, covering Izuku’s mouth with his tail and leaving Shinsou to smirk and walk away.

Izuku: “Ojiro, what’s the deal?”

Ojiro: “You can’t say a word to him.”

These are the first real clues we get as to what Shinsou’s quirk actually is and how it works. but we still. don’t. get. full. disclosure. 

The scene cuts to the side games / preparations of the remaining contestants for the final round: 

I really appreciate the sheer amount of dread on Izuku’s face. 

This is a meme. We all have Shinsou to thank for this meme. At this point, we can’t even hear what they’re discussing, we just know it’s making a nervous boi  e x t r a  nervous...

A few scenes later, and we finally get what we’ve all been waiting for:

“Whoa, he looks kinda scared in that picture, doesn’t he? It’s Izuku Midoriya from the hero course!!” 

VS.

“Hitoshi Shinsou from general studies, who really hasn’t done anything to stand out yet…” 

Once again, Present Mic reminds us just how much of a dark horse Shinsou is. Discounting a few strategic bits and pieces, two whole rounds have passed already, and we still know next to nothing about him. It’s interesting to note how Present Mic explains the rules of the match too:

“The rules are simple: immobilize your opponent or force him out of the ring!! You can also win by making the other person cry uncle. Anything goes… so don’t be afraid to put your morals aside and play dirty!”

Which Shinsou does. 

He starts playing before the match even begins, already trying to get Izuku to talk:

“So you can just give up, huh?”

Izuku doesn’t respond, so Shinsou continues:

“In a way, this is a test of how strong your spirit is. If you know what you want your future to hold for you, you can’t worry about what other people think.”  

Present Mic: “READY?!”

“That monkey was going on about his pride earlier...”

Present Mic: “BEGIN!”

“...but I just think he’s an idiot for throwing away his chance like that.”

Shinsou started playing even before the match began, and he started off by saying a whole lot of incendiary things: 

Why would you care what other people thought of you? (In a world where pro heroes depend on popular appeal for their livelihood, that’s not something a typical aspiring hero would say...)

“That monkey... is an idiot” (insulting a former teammate... not very hero-like) 

Who cares about pride? (People who say that often hint they’re willing to get their hands dirty if the ends justify the means... again, not very hero-like)

In retrospect, of course we know Shinsou’s primary motivation for saying all those things was to elicit a response from Izuku, but at the time... it just made him look like a jerk. Maybe even a jerk with a potential villainous streak...

Regardless, it does get a rise out of Izuku, and that’s when it finally happens. 

We openly see Shinsou use his quirk for the first time.

Izuku freezes.

Everyone’s shocked. But even then not everyone understands what’s going on yet... even Present Mic seems confused, even possibly chalking it up to stage fright:

“Huh?! What’s the dealio? This is the first match, it should start out with a bang! The fight has just begun and Izuku Midoriya is… completely frozen?!”

AND THAT’S WHERE EPISODE 19 ENDS.

WE STILL DON’T KNOW SHINSOU’S QUIRK.

Yes, we’ve seen it in action, we can infer, but it still takes a whole episode to put a clear label on it...

Episode 20: Victory or Defeat

Way to build up the suspense with a corny episode title am I right

Present Mic introduces us back into the fray:  “Izuku Midoriya is completely frozen?! He’s not moving a muscle! And what’s with that look on his face? Could this be a quirk at work? Hitoshi Shinsou seems to have Izuku Midoriya completely stunned!”

Let’s take a quick inventory on just how sh00k everyone is:

Concerned frens. I was too the first time I watched this. I think we all were. Our baby Izuku’s been frozen by the weird purple jerk who we don’t really have any sympathy for yet.

Even the pro heroes are stunned. They don’t seem to have any idea what’s going on either, which suggests maybe they haven’t seen a quirk like Shinsou’s before...

BUT what really gets me are these guys. I’m pretty certain they’re all general studies kids. Shinsou’s classmates. Meaning they KNOW Shinsou. And assumedly they know his quirk too, since that’s like the second question that comes up whenever you meet someone in this universe, right after “What’s your name?” YET THEY’RE JUST AS SHOCKED AS EVERYONE ELSE. Which makes me wonder... what if Shinsou never told his UA classmates what his quirk was?

Regardless, it builds up the suspense even more. 

And at long last, as the crowd still sits stunned, Aizawa steps in to finally answer all our unspoken questions:

“Since we’re on to the individual matches, I had some information compiled about our final competitors. Shinsou failed the practical exam to get into the hero course. Since he also applied for general studies, he probably figured that would happen. His quirk is incredibly strong, but that entrance test consisted of fighting faux villains. It gave a huge advantage to those who had physical superpowers they could show off. Despite his abilities, Shinsou never stood a chance at passing.”

He never stood a chance beCAUSE...

*cue ambient unsettling music*

Izuku turns around and starts walking out of bounds.

EVERYONE FLIPS THE HELL OUT.

All Might, watching from the sidelines: “What is this power?”

And finally, thanks to Aizawa’s data, Present Mic tells us:

‘When an opponent answers his question, it flips a switch in their minds, forcing them to do whatever he says. Not every question does it though. He only brainwashes when he wants to.” 

There it is.

After five episodes of ominous, behind-the-scenes buildup, we finally have it. I don’t know about everyone else, but I was blown away. Looking back, it made total sense, and I had no idea how I didn’t figure it out beforehand, (maybe someone did, lol, I am kind of a dumbass). But, main point here: Shinsou’s intro had a lot of great suspense built into it, culminating in his match with Izuku, which reveals not only his quirk but also his true character (which I’ll talk about in a future post - specifically how Shinsou’s backstory reveal completely flips our perception of him). Along the way, we had plenty of opportunities to forget about Shinsou, discount him - at least in favor of our already well-established favorites - and most importantly, type cast him as villainous. But all that turns on its head the moment we learn what he can do - and as I’ll talk about later on, when we find out his true intentions.

What a brilliant intro. 

And he knows it too. Just look how smug he is.

2. How easy is it for your character to laugh?

Quite easy, actually! She’s the type that usually finds at least something about a situation slightly amusing, even when that something turns out to be extremely inappropriate. Of course she doesn’t laugh at every amusing thing but her laughing is a relatively common sight

7. What triggers nostalgia for them, most often? Do they enjoy that feeling?

Usually it’s scents- a hint of elderwood and honey reminds her of her grandma, smells of damp earth and flowers remind her specifically of a tree in her parents’ backyard that she tried (and failed) to climb, even the slightly artificial scent of TJ’s fabric softener. Though she’s not a tactile person, sometimes the texture of soft laces or faux leather bring back fleeting memories, but she can’t put her finger on what or when they are.

A few memory she looks back on fondly; most, however, she finds bothersome. She doesn’t like nostalgia because it feels muddy, memories that she can’t place and has no use recalling.

12. How do they deal with an itch found in a place they can’t quite reach? 

She would, of course, play contortionist to get that fucking itch if it bothers her enough- and most likely, it does. When all else fails she might reach for a book, a ruler, something she has on hand that offers some reach. She’s also not above using one of the walls, especially if she’s trying to concentrate on something.

20. If they were asked to explain the difference between romantic and platonic or familial love, how would they do so?

She’d definitely mull over it for a while, so long in fact you might think she won’t answer. But then she does.

“They come from one place. It is a need… a want… for another’s closeness. It could be…” Hesitation. More musing. “Base.”

She shakes her head. “The distinction varies. Ask another if you wish,” She says, then goes back to her original business without another word.

28. Would they prefer a lie over an unpleasant truth?

In her youth, she believed in the inevitability of the truth, but as she grows older she understands there is no black and white. Companion!Enabel still embraces her more straight-forward values and cuts to the chase when there is no way to soften the blow; Inquisitor!Enabel, however, learns to lie and omit more unpleasant things over time to smooth ruffled feathers.

As for herself, Enabel generally prefers being told the truth, though some should have stayed buried forever.

38.What memory do they revisit the most often?

For sure, memories of the Blight. That kind of war never dies for real when it ends; it stays with people like her, people whom history forgets and erases completely. Happier (bittersweet) memories involve things like her first vallaslin and the drake she slain as a child.

E/ Are they someone you would get along with? Would they get along with you? 

Enabel is definitely one of my more tortured girls… I don’t think I would know how to handle her moods as a person lmao, I have my own moods too that I think might just cause us to, like, exist in our general vicinity without interacting in any meaningful way e v e r. Overall I think it really depends on fate lol

Millie is. Entertaining. But we definitely won’t get along. At all. She has all the uglier traits of characters I love and together that’s a combo that would grate my nerve to bits lol if I happen to be someone she likes, sure it might be bearable, but the jerk is too finicky to be sure XD

F/What do you feel when you think of your OC (pride, excitement, frustration, etc)?

I’m proud of both of them and of myself for being able to churn out anything for them haha

Other than that, I’m very fond of Enabel at the moment. As people we won’t know how to deal with each other but like, she is given an emotional strength that I find very admirable. I drive her into the Angst Zone more often than not, sure, but usually (except a few scenario when, ya know, she dies or gets possessed) she pulls through. She doesn’t get stronger every time because that’s too functional can you imagine me making an OC that functional but she manages and that’s as much as what I can ask for most days

I’ve given Enabel many ‘bad’ qualities (grouchy, taciturn, etc.) but Millie is where it’s really at. She’s alternatively one of the most fun OCs to play with and one of the Most Frustrating Ones. She has a distinct voice not designed to be likable and I find myself fighting to make her softer, more understanding, more unlike her all the damn time. When I can let go tho, I really let go, and Millie offers a freeing narrative unlike my other OCs because this bitch fully embraces the fact that she infuriates the fuck out of people and it’s always a field trip
