April 9th is National Unicorn Day.
In Celtic mythology the unicorn was a symbol of purity and innocence, as well as masculinity and power. Tales of dominance and chivalry associated with the unicorn may be why it was chosen as Scotland’s national animal.
With Scotland being famed for its love for and long history of myths and legends, it is no surprise that a fabled creature such as the unicorn is Scotland’s national animal. Unicorns have been linked to Scotland for centuries. While the animal is mythological, the ideals it represents are what make it a perfect fit as the national animal for Scotland, and because like this proud beast – Scots would fight to remain unconquered.
The unicorn was first used on the Scottish royal coat of arms by William I in the 12th century. In the 15th century, when King James III was in power, gold coins even appeared with the unicorn on them. When Scotland and England unified under the reign of James VI of Scotland in 1603, the Scottish Royal Arms had two unicorns supporting a shield. When James VI became James I of England and Ireland, he replaced the unicorn on the left of the shield with the national animal of England, the lion, to show that the countries were indeed united.
The unicorn representing Scotland in the coat of arms is always depicted bounded by a golden chain, which is often seen passing around its neck and wrapping all around its body. The unicorn was believed to be the strongest of all animals – wild and untamed, and that it could only be humbled by a virgin maiden. It is possible that the entrapment symbolises the power of the Scottish kings – they were strong enough to tame even a unicorn.
You don't have to go far to see evidence of Unicorns in our country, they are on our coat of arms, and adorn many of our Mercat Crosses throughout Scotland, If you want to know more and see examples of this creature head o Perth and visit the new museum where an exhibition is running unti September. https://perthmuseum.co.uk/inside-the-museum/unicorn/

Joseph Stella (Italian-American, 1877-1946)
1. Dance of Spring (Song of the Birds), 1924, oil on canvas
2. Study for Song of Birds, c.1924, silverpoint & crayon
from the 2023 “Joseph Stella: Visionary Nature” exhibition at Brandywine Museum of Art
“Stella assembles a classical temple of flora and fauna - in his own words, culled ‘from the elysian lyricism of the Italian spring.’ Flowers rise from a pink lotus at the base of a central column, culminating in the curious combination of a lupine and a longhorn steer's head flower, a floral form that resembles a bull's skull. Below perch three sparrows, the national bird of Italy* and a favorite of Stella's. He may have worked out this group separately in a silverpoint composition (on view adjacently) featuring the birds set among the branches of a winterberry tree rather than within a floral temple.”

I’m curious about national animals.
I mean, I’m Canadian. This is my national animal:

I mean, you seriously have to work to make a beaver dignified.
Don’t get me wrong, they’re amazing! Their dams, their biology, they’re fascinating creatures and I believe they deserve respect.
But dignity?
And you know what?
I adore every relevant Canadian fauna with everything in my heart. The death giant that is the moose. The rage in black and white that is the Canadian goose. And the giant leather tail of the “noble” beaver.
They’re all just so Canadian - goofy, industrious, terrifying, bizzare.
They’re animals that represent an entire nation that annually fights cabin fever by strapping knives to our feet and waving around long narrow wooden clubs.
Are other people proud of their national animals for reasons that aren’t - they’re insane and therefore my spirit animal??
Because I’m currently living in the USA, and every time I see this treated as a symbol of dignity…

Shearing half a sheep seemed a simple way to show a season's growth of wool, but photographer Cary Wolinsky was wrong. The half-shorn sheep tended to lose their balance and topple to wool-ward. It took many tries before merino sheep number 30 “became our hero," Wolinsky said.

April 9th is National Unicorn Day.
Scotland is a treasure trove of proud history and trip-worthy adventure. Many people who are not familiar with the country’s antiquity may be surprised to find out that the national animal of Scotland is the unicorn. Though it may seem like an odd choice at face value, here are some reasons why choosing a unicorn was actually a bold and rebellious choice.
In Celtic mythology, unicorns symbolize unity, purity, courage, and strength. They are celebrated as healers, are thought to possess magical properties in their horns, and are considered one of the only animals powerful enough to defeat formidable opponents, such as elephants, in battle.
Legend claims only virgins could capture and tame a unicorn, and those who are lucky enough to touch one will know happiness and joy for the rest of their lives. Though in the stories, unicorns are powerful in their own right, some people believe the selection was made based on symbolism even older than the Celtic mythology.
Lore dating back to the ancient Babylonians said that unicorns were the natural enemy of lions - a symbol English royals had taken up centuries prior, so it's only natural Scots took up The Unicorn as s symbol!
Despite modern American depictions of unicorns as rainbow casting, cloud hopping pacifists, Scotland knows better. Still holding their centuries-old symbolism close to heart, the choice of the national animal makes much more sense once given some context.
Though Scotland’s royal coat of arms may have seen some changes, largely due to the Union with England, their identification with this mythical creature remains steadfast, with messages of virtue and strength holding strong centuries after its selection. I'm not sure about the tinned unicorn though!
