Alternate Endings

Summary: A few months after she came over from the apocalypse world, curiosity has finally gotten the best of Y/N and she makes a decision that she might end up regretting. Characters: Reader, Dean Winchester, Sam Winchester, other minor OC’s Word Count: 3003 Warnings: Angst, language, worried!Winchesters, reader gets drunk, mention of character death, more angst, then fluff A/N: Again, I feel like I’m the only person that would be curious about stuff like this if I journeyed to an alternate reality. Maybe season 14 will include an episode like this, but only time will tell. This was looked over by several people and beta’d by the ever so lovey @saxxology. Enjoy!

“And do you have a current address for her?” Y/N requested of the man on the other side of the phone. He rambled off an address and she jotted it down on the notepad in front of her before cautiously looking around for anyone else that might be close enough to hear what she was doing. The bunker’s library was empty, save for her, and she nervously tapped the end of her pencil on the notepad as the gentleman continued to ramble.

Sam Winchester had forbidden it, but after all the tragedy she had experienced in her life while in that horrible apocalyptic world, she deserved to see what her counterpart in this world had accomplished. After several Google searches resulted in no leads, she resorted to calling the town clerk’s office in the small town she grew up in, hoping this world’s Y/N was born in the same town. She was, and the woman from the clerk’s office was very helpful and started a chain of leads that had finally ended with the gentleman she was speaking with.

She had an address after three long weeks of searching.

“Hey, Y/N. What are you working on?”

She jumped at the sound of Dean Winchester’s voice and the phone slipped from her grasp, abruptly ending the call as it clattered against the wooden table. She clutched her chest in fear and scowled at the amused look on his face.

“Jesus, Dean. You scared the crap out of me.”

“Sorry, sweetheart. The bunker is kind of empty now since everyone we’ve brought back from apocalypse world has started hunting again. I think you’re the only one that isn’t on a hunt,” he mused, stepping closer and peering at the address scribbled on the paper. “Well, you were the only one without a hunt. Whatcha got?”

“It’s… it’s a ghost, I think,” she calmly lied. “A house in Osceola, Iowa. One of the lady’s kids was pulled under a bed and scratched up. They also keep hearing something moving in the walls. I’m thinking either a ghost or poltergeist.”

“Or a creepy cannibal girl and her brother,” Dean muttered with a shiver. He shook himself out of the unpleasant memory and cleared his throat. “Yeah, sounds like some kind of spirit. You want company? I’m sure Sammy wouldn’t mind if I leave him behind. He’s kind of mother henning over everyone while they’re out in the field.”

Smiling at his offer, Y/N shook her head. “No, thank you. It seems like a simple case. I’ll check it out and if it turns into something more, I’ll give you a call. It’s a relatively short drive away.”

Dean backed up a little as she stood up and ripped the notepad page off, shoving it in her pocket before she gathered her stuff and glanced up at him again. “Make sure you check in when you get to the motel, and wear the body cam if you go out and search for bones, okay? While I might not like that Sam’s barely sleeping, the system he’s got is pretty impressive.”

“It’s always a shock when the little sibling steps up, huh?” Y/N teased, giggling at the indignant scoff from Dean. She patted him on the shoulder as she walked out of the library and into the war room. Spinning on her heel, she added, “Oh, and Dean? You should really give Sam more credit as a hunter. He’s not just your little brother, you know.”

Dean grumbled something and crossed his arms over his chest, and Y/N only laughed as she continued down the hallway to her room. Her expression soon faded into sorrow as she remembered her own older brother whom she’d lost during the first round of battles between angels and demons. She’d do anything to hear his voice call her ‘kiddo’ again.

Blinking the tears from her eyes, she cleared her throat and began packing the second she stepped foot into her room.

She had more important things to focus on.

One day later…

“Hey, Dean?” Sam said as his brother entered the room, not bothering to look up from his laptop.

“Yeah, Sammy, what’s up?” Dean walked over and took a seat at the map table.

“Have you heard from Y/N? She left a note that she was going on a hunt in Osceola, but she never checked in last night. It’s not that long of a drive so she definitely got there before sundown.” Sam finally looked over at Dean. “She mention anything to you about it?”

“Yeah, she said she found a ghost hunt or something.” Dean closed his eyes, remembering their conversation. “Said a kid got scratched up and that she’d call if it was anything more than a salt and burn. Has she used the body cam?”

“No, I checked the log. She hasn’t recorded anything, but she did check one out before she left.” Sam tapped some keys on his laptop, refreshing the page, but it only showed the same black text: No live or stored video found.

Dean was concerned now. She was the second youngest they brought over from the apocalypse world, and according to Bobby, she’d been hunting since age thirteen. But Dean knew all too well that age and experience mean nothing if you’re not prepared and go in alone.

“Should we go after her?” Dean asked, studying Sam’s tired expression.

Sam shook his head and ran a hand down his face. “It’s only been 24 hours and we don’t know if she’s just busy. Hell, she could have gotten to the motel and crashed, forgetting to check in. Call her and see if she answers. If not, we’ll give it a few hours before I try and ping her cell phone. It’s a few hours from sundown so she might be on her way to the cemetery if she’s figured out where the bones are buried.”

Dean hesitated, but nodded at his brother’s logic. Y/N was right, Sam has definitely stepped up while he was gone, and while it might look like he’s annoyed at the power shift, he couldn’t be more proud of his little brother. Dean pulled out his phone and dialed Y/N’s number, listening as it rang for a solid minute.

“Hi, you’ve reached Y/N’s voicemail. I’m probably asleep or out kicking ass, so leave me a message and I just might call you back. Or kick your ass. Which one you get depends on what you have to say.”

Dean smiled at her voicemail message and waited for the beep. “Hey, Y/N, it’s Dean. You didn’t check in last night and I’m just calling to see what’s going on. Give me or Sam a call back, kiddo.” He tapped the screen and ended the call, but before he could call her FBI phone, someone doing research in the library called for his attention; a hunter in the field needed some emergency research on what he was hunting.

It was almost two hours later when they finally found out what this man named Bill was hunting, much to everyone’s relief. Dean stood from the library table and stretched before he went off in search of Sam, finding him eating a sandwich in the kitchen. Dean grabbed a beer from the fridge, making a mental note to buy more, and joined his brother at the table.

“You heard from Y/N?” Dean asked after taking a long pull from the beer.

“Shit,” Sam muttered, clicking over to the body cam video feed website. “She didn’t call me, but I forgot to check and see if her body cam has been active.” He clicked on the feed from the cam she took and his eyes widened. “It’s live, she’s streaming it right now.”

Dean sputtered on his beer and immediately stood, walking around the table to peer at the laptop. The live video was always a little more grainy than the recorded feed, but the brothers could make out several gravestones from where the camera was angled, so they knew she was in a cemetery. It took a few more seconds before they realized that, based on the angle of the camera, the body cam was on the ground in the grass and not attached to Y/N.

Or was it.

“Sammy…” Dean began, swallowing hard.

Sam was about to speak, but he furrowed his brows and held up a finger. “Wait… do you hear that?” He maxed out the volume on his laptop and both brothers leaned in, straining to hear the faint noise coming from the video feed. Sam’s eyebrows shot up and he looked at Dean. “Is that...”

“Someone crying,” Dean finished, running a hand down his face. “We gotta go. Now. She could be hurt or dying.”

“It’s gonna take us a few hours and we don’t know what cemetery she’s at.” Sam pulled up a map and checked around the city she was in, finding no red dots anywhere close. “No hunters around Iowa, we’re the closest. Let me ping her cell phone, try calling her again.”

Dean did as Sam asked, but he got her voicemail message straight away. He searched in his contact list and pulled up her FBI phone number, but that line went immediately to her voicemail as well. “Straight to voicemail on her normal phone and her Fed one. You got anything?”

“No,” Sam huffed, “her phones are both off or dead, so GPS isn’t working. She knows better than that. I think something’s wrong. Do you have any idea where in Osceola she went? Or where she got the info for the hunt from? I don’t see any news stories about a kid being attacked.”

Dean shook his head. “No, she didn’t say who she was talking to when we talked in the library but…” Dean trailed off as he remembered her writing the address of the place on her notepad. His face lit up and he sprinted across the kitchen before remembering he had no idea where he was going. “What room is she in?”

“26, east wing. Why do -” Sam stopped speaking when his brother disappeared down the hallway.

Dean practically knocked the door off its hinges with how quickly he opened it, and he immediately walked over to the desk and swiped her notepad and pencil, returning to his brother. Sam was about to ask what he was doing, when Dean began lightly shading over an area on the notepad with his pencil.

“Oh, nice,” Sam complimented as Dean continued shading, uncovering the address. “Her pencil left an indentation on the following page.”

“How do you think I knew where dad was going on hunts after you were old enough to babysit yourself?” Dean replied before blowing the excess lead from the page. “586 South Ridge Road, Osceola. Put it in your GPS, I’ll grab our bags. Meet at the car in ten.”

Sam put the address in his phone, frowning when it pulled up a website for Maple Hill Cemetery. “Dean, the address she wrote down is a cemetery. How would she already know where the bones are buried? Maybe it was a ghoul?”

“I have no clue, dude, just come on, we need to go.” With that, Dean disappeared down the hallway and Sam gathered his laptop and returned to the war room, letting a few of the dedicated researchers that have been benched due to injuries know he and Dean were heading out.

The wet grass had thoroughly soaked through the seat of her jeans, but Y/N couldn’t find any strength left in her body to give a damn. She brought the whiskey bottle to her lips and took another gulp, barely registering the burn anymore as the liquid slid down her throat. Her eyes hadn’t moved from the grave stone for hours.

She knew she forgot to check in last night, but she wanted to get an early start; it was a long drive from the motel to the address she had. She didn’t realize that she had forgotten to charge her phones until she was already a half an hour away from the motel. It was supposed to be a quick trip to see what her doppelganger had made for herself, but like everything else in Y/N’s life, it was never that simple.

When the guy she spoke to yesterday said this is where the Y/N in this world resided, she expected a white picket fence and a happy family. Of course that wasn’t her luck. He had failed to mention that this isn’t where she lives… it was her final resting place. The final resting place of Y/N Y/L/N-Owens, her husband Theodore Owens, and their twin children, Zoey and Samantha Owens.

All four of them died on May 11th, 2010.

She didn’t Google the name after she had the address. If she did, she would have found the news articles about how an unexpected earthquake ended in tragedy when a gas line broke and ignited inside their home, causing it to explode and kill everyone inside. It was the same earthquakes that the Winchesters had mentioned, along with other natural disasters, that occurred when the apocalypse was in full swing.

“S’rry ‘bout the apocalypse,” she slurred, raising the bottle of whiskey before taking another sip. “Sorry about all the other bullshit you prolly went through too, if your parents were jus’ as shitty as mine.”

The world surrounding her was mostly silent, but the birds chirping around her sounded like nails on a chalkboard to her alcohol-hazed mind. She also didn’t hear the rumbling sound of a car approaching, nor two car doors opening and closing.

“Dean,” Sam said, pointing to where you were. “What is she doing?”

Dean raised a brow and shrugged. “Looks like she’s sitting in front of a gravestone and demolishing a bottle of whiskey. I don’t think she’s injured, and if it was her crying on the live feed, I think you should go talk to her. You’re better with the feelings stuff.”

Sam sighed heavily and nodded, grabbing the first aid kit and a bottle of water from the trunk first, just in case, before heading over to where she was sitting. Placing a gentle hand on her shoulder so she wasn’t startled, he crouched down and ran his eyes over her body, making sure there was no blood or wounds. Satisfied that she was unscathed, he sat down in the grass close to her, grimacing at the cold wetness as it seeped into his pants.

Silently, Sam placed the bottle of water between them before his eyes focused on the gravestone a few feet in front of him. Y/N’s name, along with three others, were carved in the smooth marble with the same date of death. Although Sam’s head was swimming with questions, he knew she wasn’t ready to answer them yet.

Y/N continued to drink whiskey and cry softly, but about ten minutes after the brothers arrived, she reached over and grabbed the bottle of water, cracking it open and chugging more than half the liquid in one go. She recapped the bottle and dropped it into the space between her crossed legs.

“She’s gone, Sam.”

“Your counterpart in this world?” Sam asked and she nodded. “You know, when I told you guys not to look up or visit your doppelganger, it wasn’t to avoid some kind of ‘identical twins separated at birth’ issue. It was to avoid even more heartbreak if they weren’t alive or were never born.”

“I should have listened,” she admitted softly, wiping her nose with the back of her hand. “I just thought… I thought that maybe the Y/N over here avoided all the shit I went through. I hoped she had the family and normal life that I could never have,” she motioned to the headstone, “but it looks like the Y/L/N’s are cursed no matter what world you’re in.”

Sam scooted closer to her and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “She did have a life and a family. And so do you. We’re your family, even though we’re not blood related.”

She took a shaky breath and leaned into his side, savoring the warmth if his body as she realized just how cold she actually was. “She died during one the earthquakes caused by the apocalypse you guys almost had.” Sam stiffened at the mention of the apocalypse and she smiled softly. “I know you think it was your fault, Sam, but it wasn’t. Lucifer did all of that and you were the hero that saved the world.”

Sam tightened his arm around her and smiled. “You’re just as much of a hero as I am, Y/N. What do you say we head back to the bunker and take it easy for a few days? I know I need a break and I think you deserve one, too.”

Y/N nodded and looked up at him, admiring the small dimples intending his cheeks. “Sounds good, Sam. I think it’s what my counterpart would have wanted. For me to keep living and keep fighting.”

“I think we all want that for each other, Y/N. Especially hunters.” Sam moved his arm from her shoulder and got to his feet, offering her a hand which she gladly accepted. “How about I drive your car back and you can ride shotgun? Dean’ll be fine riding solo in the Impala.”

“That’s probably for the best. I’m pretty drunk,” she admitted, looking down at the almost empty bottle laying in the grass.

Before she could bend down and grab the whiskey bottle, Sam was pulling her into a tight hug. “I’m glad you’re safe.”

“Me too, Sam. Thank you,” she smiled, scooping up the glass bottle and water bottle before grabbing the discarded body cam.

“Always, Y/N,” Sam grinned back at her as they walked back toward Dean.

The Seminole Wars: America's Largest Conflict with Indigenous Peoples

In the 245 years the United States has been a country, 225 of those years have been spent at war, roughly 92% of its history. Many of these conflicts are lost to time. For example, The Korean war is unknown to the point it is often called the “Forgotten War”. If you clicked on the post and read the title, you can probably see where I am going with this. The Seminole Wars were fought in and around Florida, and cost the lives of thousands of people. But this is never taught in detail to students. Especially students in Florida, who live in the very places named after participants in the conflict. Students should learn more about this hidden conflict because it is a story of injustice, defiance, and the erasure of history.

Background

A brief history of the Seminoles is necessary. To start, the Seminole people are a combination of tribes and distinct language groups of Indigenous peoples. Their ancestors inhabit various reservations in modern-day Oklahoma and Florida and Their origin can be traced back to Alabama and Georgia. Like the Pilgrims that came to America, The Seminoles were also Immigrants. According to the Orange county library system, Florida history page 1 “Seminole history begins with bands of Creek Indians from Georgia and Alabama who migrated to Florida in the 1700s. Conflicts with Europeans and other tribes caused them to seek new lands to live in peace. Groups of Lower Creeks moved to Florida to get away from the dominance of Upper Creeks. Some Creeks were searching for rich, new fields to plant corn, beans, and other crops. For a while, Spain even encouraged these migrations to help provide a buffer between Florida and the British colonies. The 1770s is when Florida Indians collectively became known as Seminole, a name meaning ‘wild people’ or ‘runaway."

The Seminoles saw the fledgling United States as a threat to their way of life, and despised them for urging them out of the norther states. During the war of 1812, the Seminoles fought alongside the British and enacted raids and attacks on Georgian towns and farms. When the war ended, and the English did not end up winning, the Seminoles were now all alone and had made enemies with America. The Seminoles were in the way of total U.S domination in North America, they accepted run away slaves from southern plantations, and were hostile to any encroachment further south. Resentment for the Seminoles would continue growing and would eventually boil over into an armed conflict.

Conflict

The first Seminole war -- of course it was not called that at the time -- began when the future president Andrew Jackson led an army into Florida to raze the Seminoles into the ground. 2“The American forces opposing the Seminoles were placed under the command of General Andrew Jackson. He organized about 3,000 men, more than half of which were creek Indians led by the half-breed chieftain, Macintosh. Jackson attacked the Seminoles, burning most of their towns, seizing thousands of bushels of corn, taking great numbers of horses and hogs, driving off several thousand head of cattle, and killing or capturing all who stood in his path. After subduing the Seminoles, he also attacked Spanish settlements in the State,” writes Neil Wilfred The Seminoles did not just turn over, instead, they mounted a guerilla war and ambushed and attacked vulnerable groups of soldiers wherever they could.

During the conflict, Florida was officially sold to the United States from Spain, as they saw no use in the territory anymore. Fighting did not end until the treaty of Payne’s landing in 1832 which would move the Seminoles into new land in Oklahoma. This land was barren and was in no way familiar to the Seminoles. It was so unfavorable that many Seminoles decided to stay in Florida and risk fighting the federal army.

The Second Seminole war began on the terms of the Seminoles. In 1835 a column of American soldiers intending to enforce Payne’s treaty was ambushed and all but one American soldier was killed. This attack showed the skill and dedication the Seminoles had and was a clear indicator of the violence to come in the war. The Seminoles were outnumbered ten to one with nearly 30,000 federal troops sweeping through the Peninsula. Although outnumbered, the Seminoles’ hit and run tactics, and knowledge of the land, gave them an edge through out the campaign.

As the war ramped up and the body count rose, desperate measures were taken. One of the fiercest and well-known leaders of the Seminoles, Osceola, was sent an invitation to peace talks. Once he showed up at the location, he was captured, imprisoned, and was kept there until his death. Osceola became a Martyr and his name still lives on in the Seminoles of today.
