#Sunset 184 by #LoriHersberger💡🌅 • Born in 1964 in Basel, Switzerland Lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland Lori Hersberger produces art that is radically eclectic, drawing inspiration from an expanded and inclusive vision of culture. Moving between media as diverse as video, sculpture, performance, painting, and neon, his use of fluorescent colors, reflective surfaces and porous boundaries between artwork and reality draws in part from rock music and the freedoms it implies. Despite this plurality, the work is surprisingly coherent, keeping to an idiom of vibrant texture and violent interventions. In fact, Hersberger views his varied output as facets of a whole and frequently shows all paintings, neon, sculptures and video together, as a complete installation. Framegrabs from a film I made for @calummacdiarmiddirector and Hilton and Moss car restoration specialists Lighting cars, you’re not lighting a subject in the normal way, you’re reflecting light sources onto a highly reflective collection of curved surfaces. Traditionally cars look best in a car studios, where you drive the car into a white cove surrounding - then you can bounce light into the cove to define the shape you want to reflect on the car. The other alternative is to get a large overhead source, like a fisher light (huge car soft topflight). Whatever you use, ideally you want it to light along the length of the contours or graduate off otherwise it looks nervous, bitty, and doesn’t define the full shape of the car in a smooth continuous way. This car was lit on location in their workshop with relatively (in car terms) small size lights. I put two 7x foot Dedolight panauras and hung them over the car. You can see that the contour hi-light didn’t reach the full length of the car, but on this occasion I think we got away with it as the wheel arches and chrome bumpers continue the highlights and balance the reflections quite well. We had just enough black to surround the car edges allowing separation in in post production. Will go into shots of the mechanics in the workshop soon. Shot on an Alexa Mini with my lenses, personal built straw coated Leica anamorphic lens set.
