Where are you looking?
The Best of Jack’s Winning Words 4/29/24 – Reposts from the blog of the late Pastor Jack Freed – Originally sent February 26, 2009 “Always look at what you have left. Never look at what you have lost.” (Robert Schuller) I generally agree with the thought of this quote. However, I get a bit nervous when I see the words, “always” and “never,” because I want some wiggle-room. Schuller’s basic point…

The following details the fall of Richard II and the rise of Henry Bolingbroke in Henry IV.
“A just king gives stability to his nation, but one who demands bribes destroys it” (Proverbs 29:4). This king of course was chosen by God, and by that very definition was good and fit to rule, or so the church and monarch would say. This stemmed from a political doctrine known as “The Divine Right of Kings,” in which the monarch was above any action of worldly government such as Parliament and it’s laws. This notion manifests itself in the King’s right to do whatever he wishes with no consequence to himself where there would be for one not “chosen.” Richard II is a prime example of a king who, fell into this spiral of power-lust, and was deposed for it. This in it of itself is enough to say clearly that Richard was not a good king, nor a just one.
In the first Act, Richard II seems to be a fair king. From his manner dealing with the arguments of the two Lords Moybray and Bolingbroke. To their demands for a trial by combat, Richard say thusly: “Wrath-kindled gentlemen, be ruled by me; Let's purge this choler without letting blood: This we prescribe, though no physician; Deep malice makes too deep incision; Forget, forgive; conclude and be agreed; Our doctors say this is no month to bleed. Good uncle, let this end where it begun; We'll calm the Duke of Norfolk, you your son” (I, i, Line 152). Such a request does not seem unreasonable considering that without real proof of the treason that Bolingbroke cites Moybray of, no truly accurate ruling could be made in certainty, until one considers that this is not a request coming from the just nature of a God appointed saint of a king, but rather a master manipulator and overall rat of a man, let alone a king.
The first hint to his puppetry comes to light, at least to a reader, on the jousting green where Richard, who had previously let the two warring Lords throw down gauges against one another, stops them abruptly. “With harsh resounding trumpets' dreadful bray, And grating shock of wrathful iron arms, Might from our quiet confines fright fair peace And make us wade even in our kindred's blood, Therefore, we banish you our territories: You, cousin Hereford, upon pain of life, Till twice five summers have enrich'd our fields Shall not regreet our fair dominions, But tread the stranger paths of banishment” (I, iii, Line 135). This conveys two things. The first of which is plain, he does not in fact hold the two as equal, as he treats his cousin to a much less harsh banishment. However, the second point is a little buried. That being the reason for his sudden change of mind, which seems to be in part to show the two of them the power the he as king possesses, which he shows them in his display on their marked day of dueling. Moybray also drops certain little tid-bits of an inside piece of knowledge in reference to the death of the Duke of Gloucester which he affirms to be in someway connected to Richard. But if Richard is the instigator, or only privy to the one who was, is somewhat unclear, however that matters not as in both he is in fact dealing in murder and its planning. His acts only just begin with this act of exile. Next comes his seizing of John of Gaunt’s property, plate, and gold, as Bolingbroke, the Lancaster inheritor is no longer present. However this is violating the rights of inheritance as not only was Bolingbroke never marked as traitor, but it seems as if he was exiled for precisely this situation.
As word of his father’s death, and the treatment of his property, Henry Lord of Bolingbroke returns in the name of Lancaster. The lords invite him back as a saviour to their own wealth and safety of it, and thus Bolingbroke begins to take shape as the one who will take of Richard his throne and crown. Noble Henry Bolingbroke is well adored by those of the common and general populace, which lends him even more to become the new king after Richard. Meanwhile, with general unrest and hate of Richard growing, and the armies of Northumberland by his side, Bolingbroke, soon Henry fourth of that name, becomes Richard’s usurper and takes the English crown upon himself. Thereafter he seems to adjust fairly well, though he still is just that, a usurper. One who takes from a rightful king the throne is taking that throne from God, unless of course that taking were orchestrated by the greater power of such a patron. Thus it can be said that any man who won a fight, did so only out of God’s grace and eye for a truly just knight. However, those who taste power and the taking of it, are destined to be under its grasp from then ‘till their death. This is noted by Richard himself, to Northumberland, “Northumberland, thou ladder wherewithal The mounting Bolingbroke ascends my throne, The time shall not be many hours of age More than it is ere foul sin gathering head Shalt break into corruption: thou shalt think, Though he divide the realm and give thee half, It is too little, helping him to all; And he shall think that thou, which know'st the way To plant unrightful kings, wilt know again, Being ne'er so little urged, another way To pluck him headlong from the usurped throne. The love of wicked men converts to fear; That fear to hate, and hate turns one or both To worthy danger and deserved death” (V, i, Line 55). Thus, corruption will too be Henry’s downfall, just as it became for Richard.
It seems like Bolingbroke, all things in consideration, will be a good enough king for a while, but in prophecy seems to become the very kind of power obsessed tyrant that Richard was, and in this will taste of the same downfall: dissatisfaction and following unseating. Bolingbroke is by no means as bad as Richard, but power twists one’s intentions and basest of values.
