Halloween headcanons 🎃🦇🕸🕷
Going thru a few of devon's characters and guessing what they'd be getting up to on Halloween
#1 Adam
Tumblr media
He's most likely taking you to some frat party, nothing too special, but he does dress up - well kinda. He puts a little fake blood around his mouth, says he's a vampire and calls it a day. Halloween is more about the parties than the spooks for him.
#2 Freddy Klein
Tumblr media
Halloween is a business opportunity for him, knowing that parents are gonna be taking their kids trick or treating, he organises a few spooky games and refreshment to try and get their attention to the dealership. You help the kids play games like bobbing for apples, while Freddy tries to sell cars to their parents. Once the night is over, the two of you celebrate some successful sales wrapped up on the sofa with a couple of beers.
#3 Casper Galloway
Tumblr media
Casper HATES Halloween, he's a big scaredy cat. Even the doorbell ringing from trick or treaters makes him jump out of his skin. He's still pretty freaked out from the whole zemon thing, so you go out of your way to distract him on Halloween. You order a pizza and snuggle up in bed to watch anything other than a horror film - he usually picks a rom com because let's face it, this man is a huuuuge softie.
#4 Mike (rip picture quality)
Tumblr media
You and Mike go to great lengths to make Halloween fun for Angel. You carve pumpkins together, make her a little boo basket and take her trick or treating. You let her stay up an hour past her bed time on Halloween, so she can watch a spooky film for kids, like monster House. Once she's been put to bed, you and Mike split a bottle of wine while watching a classic horror film and fall asleep on the sofa together.
#5 Dean Taylor
Tumblr media
According to Dean, Halloween is just an excuse to go out and raise hell without getting in trouble. He's been known to graffiti people's houses, set people's bins on fire and even mug drunk party goers. He's kinda an ass.
Where are you while all this is going on? You're at home none the wiser, waiting for him to get back so you can watch a movie together. You're under the impression that he's just out getting some snacks.. but now he's been gone an hour and you're pretty sure the store is closed by now.. oh, never mind, he just got back. He always seems to show up juuuust when you start to worry.
#Rodrick Heffley (yeah i made you wait until the very end, I know that's who you came here for)
Tumblr media
He's throwing a rager, and you better believe he's gone all out with his costume. He's painted his face to look like a skeleton and ordered a cheap robe off amazon so he can go as the grim reaper. He usually gets pretty drunk at parties, but on Halloween, every time without a doubt, he gets absolutely wasted. It ends up being your job to carry him up to bed and try to wipe his face paint off him so he doesn't ruin his bedsheets. He ends up getting very clingy and insists that you stay and cuddle with him instead of going back to the party - which you have no problem with at all.
A/n happy Halloween everyone! Hope you enjoyed these hcs, and let me know if you think I should do more "How different characters would act in a scenario" type headcanons- because this was a lot of fun to write!
As always, replies and reblogs are greatly appreciated, they help me figure out what sort of stuff people wanna see more of :^)
Requests are still open! Check my pinned post for details

Imagine the Riddler being your secret admirer. - Part 3
[Part 1] [Part 2] [Part 4] [Part 5]
That day felt weirdly long as if hours were stretching out as much as the universe would allow them to. You haven't felt that tired and fed up in quite a while, dreaming about the soft comfort of your own bed during your commute back home.
Home, however, had another surprise in store for you:
"Perfect timing, Eddie," you said to yourself as you tore the envelope off your front door. "Could use a little pick-me-up."
You opened the letter and couldn't help the surprise at the front of the card you were given. For some reason, it said "Invitation" in fancy, glittery writing. Inside, on the left side was another torn-out page from a poetry collection.
Underneath an apple-tree Sat a maiden and her lover; And the thoughts within her he Yearned, in silence, to discover.
Under the piece of a poem were written only two words: "Meet me". Your gaze followed the vague message to the right side of the card where a small map was drawn. It looked like a bird's view of a restaurant or a bar with a question mark drawn over one of the, as you had assumed, tables like the little map was the continuation of the unfinished sentence. On top of the drawing was scribbled an address, a date and an hour. You were supposed to meet him in a week's time.
From that moment on, you could hardly think about anything else and, little did you know, so did he. It was going to be a fateful Wednesday evening.
"That's the place," you whispered to yourself as you checked the GPS on your phone again.
You found yourself standing before a desolate diner that looked like it was taken straight out of Quentin Tarantino's movie. But you had to admit that the Pulp Fiction feel to the locale was charming in some way as if gracefully continuing your dilemma whether you were now the main character of a rom-com or a slash horror film.
"Here goes nothing," you said with a sigh. With each step towards the front door of the diner, your restlessness was only increasing.
The bell near the door chimed cheerfully as you hesitantly entered the building. At first, you couldn't see a soul inside - even the waitress was more of a cryptid as you could only hear her quiet chatter with the cooks coming from the kitchen. They left the door slightly ajar. According to the drawing, the marked table should be the one under the vintage-style graffiti with a pin-up girl holding a tray of apple pie. Your heart stopped for a moment, seeing that the booth was occupied.
Ever since he sat down in that booth, he'd been eyeing the door, waiting for the fateful moment you enter. The muffled laughter of the waitress rung in his ears and Eddie was half-convinced that she was laughing at him. After all, who was he to ever believe that you were actually going to show up? That you would be anything but disgusted with him?
He watched as you checked his little drawing once more. You turned your head towards him and Ed could swear the time actually slowed down if not entirely stopped when your gaze met his. The moment you realized that it was him, a bright smile appeared on your face, making Eddie's palms even sweatier than they already were. He just knew he was going to mess things up - there was no way in Hell that he could impress you. That much was obvious to Eddie.
You were just so... unreal to him. There he was: the loser, the loner, the butt of the joke and there were you, the epitome of grace approaching the table he was sitting at. He couldn't believe his own senses, some anxious beast still gnawing at his thoughts, that you didn't immediately turn around and left once you saw him.
"Hey," you said softly as you sat down across from him.
"H-hi," he nervously stuttered out.
Eddie looked more or less as you expected him to: a quiet, kind of awkward and easy-to-overlook guy who had no idea what he had gotten himself into. Your friends always found it very amusing that you had a thing for underdogs. No matter how strange it might sound to anyone else, you thought there was a certain charm to his awkwardness like an adorable deer caught in headlights.
"You have great taste." You waved the "invitation" card before putting it back into your purse.
"In what?" Eddie asked sheepishly. His mind was fluctuating between blankness and intrusive thoughts, so coherence and reason weren't something he could count on at the moment.
You shrugged. That bright, showstopping smile was still on your face and Eddie felt he wouldn't be able to look away from you even if he wanted to. "Poetry. Flowers," you counted. "Girls."
His chubby cheeks turned crimson red at your words. Your confidence made him even more aware of his incapacitating insecurity. Eddie believed his intrusive thoughts: there was nothing he could delight you with.
"I loved your riddles," you confessed. "You're really good at it."
A flutter of his heart and a ray of lovesick hope.

Review - Jet Set Radio Future on Evolution Magazine Vol.3 (Videogame Magazine) (Italy, 2002)
Translation in English:
(Page 54-55)
DISTRIBUTION - INFOGRAMES
GENRE: ACTION PLAYERS: 1-4 MANUFACTURER: SEGA DEVELOPER: SMILEBIT FORMAT:XBOX MEDIA: DVD-ROM
The concept of love, roller skates and a can of spray paint...
Almost two years ago, Jet Set Radio for the Dreamcast revolutionized the concept of modern video games. It wasn't a sequel, it wasn't a third-person adventure, it couldn't benefit from a character of attraction like Sonic but, despite everything, we were facing a great game. To tell the truth, it wasn't even easy to classify it in a precise genre; Jet Set Radio was an action game, but it had one feature that was increasingly difficult to find in this industry; the originality. Too bad that for most everything has gone unnoticed for the simple fact of running on Dreamcast. Fortunately, the European launch of the Xbox has resurrected a franchise deserving of the attention of the mass (yes: I said mass) of gamers.
The scenario of the action is a futuristic Tokyo of 2024, in which we will dart around with our "fireblade" model skates at high speed, drawing graffiti on the walls and performing acrobatic evolutions on all plausible and "grindable" surfaces. The aim of the mission, in the role of the young skater Yoyo, will be to recruit new members for our gang (after having regularly defeated them) and fight the terrible Rokkaku, a corporation that keeps the city on fire and acts with the complicity of the police local. This will chase us with any means, including tanks and helicopters! The whole adventure will be narrated by Professor K, a rebel DJ at the head of the transgressive private radio Jet Set. After passing the tutorial, disguised as the first level of the game, and having made the acquaintance of Gum and Corn (already present in the Dreamcast version ) we will be ready to dive into the most eclectic and fun challenge of our new career as writers: painting the walls of the city! And it's a real blast running around Tokyo, especially thanks to the beauty of the levels, some of which are truly jaw-dropping. Local traffic, crows perched on the roofs of houses, people in modern clothes who run away when they see us, everything has been created with particular attention to the refinement of detail. Unlike the first episode, in which the graffiti was created through complex rotations of the analog stick, now it is sufficient to press the R key (or the X and Y keys if you are in the air); understandable choice, if you take into account the fact that most of the graffiti you will have to do during the race. Jet Set Radio Future, in fact, is faster and more adrenaline-pumping than the prequel, and the emphasis was placed by Smilebit more on the stunts to be performed with skates than on the drawing of the graffiti. Precisely for this reason, to try to reach the most hidden areas to paint, we will have to learn how best to exploit the livery of our skates to slide (grind) on the most unusual surfaces (telephone wires, railings, stairs and lamp posts) and increase the thrust of our jumps. Furthermore, after collecting ten cans of spray paint, we will be able to activate the turbo boost, useful for having a greater thrust during the stunt phase. This effect is emphasized by the Xbox hardware through a spectacular screen deformation, which lets the gamer's jaw sink a few feet.
If all this were not enough, know that by continuing in the missions we will be able to select new characters, each with their own personal characteristics, from a rich roster that includes twenty-one skaters. JSRF is not only great playability: the originality and immediacy of the gameplay are accompanied by an equally valid technical realization. Graphically, Jet Set is one of the best titles to appear on Xbox so far, if not the best. The three-dimensional engine behind the Sega production is entirely in cel shading: although the environment is entirely polygonal, the less trained eye has the impression of watching and playing a real cartoon. The large number of moving objects on the screen at the same time immediately catches the eye; but the much-discussed slowdowns are very few and, certainly, not such as to negatively affect the gameplay.
The richness of details is astonishing: not only will you be "inundated" by polygons wherever you turn, but also the variety and resolution of the textures are incredible. The whole game is full of touches of class: lighting effects, lens flare used at best, stylistic traits designed to give greater dynamism and speed to the evolution of the characters, very vast and decidedly "alive" environments. And all of this shoots at an almost constant 60fps! Fortunately, Xbox Pai owners weren't penalized by the conversion: JSRF makes use of the 60 hertz mode, the image is full screen, without annoying black bars, and all the dialogues have been subtitled in Italian.
The audio part is no less impressive, with a soundtrack that mixes songs from the Japan and U.S.A versions of Jet Set Radio and adds new ones. The opening track made by Hideki Naganuma (The Concept Of Love) is already an editorial catchphrase, and we wouldn't be surprised if you started humming it habitually, too. If you own a Hi-Fi system with Dolby Digital 5.1 decoding, be sure to plug in Xbox and savor the sweet panning of Jet Set Radio Future. If you do not yet own it, you may be satisfied with the more classic stereo mode.
“...the originality and immediacy of the gameplay are accompanied by an equally valid technical realization.”
Some elements of the three-dimensional environments can be destroyed.
The characters are made up of polygons in Cel Shading and animated in a fluid way.
(Page 56)
THREE CHEERFUL GUYS OUT OF THEIR MINDS
JET SET RADIO FUTURE SOUNDTRACK
The Jet Set Radio Future soundtrack includes a tracklist created by artists from the American hip hop scene. The Latch Brothers, a group formed by three nice composers (Mike D, Tick and Wag), wrote and composed five tracks of the soundtrack of the title Smilebit. The chosen style varies from rock to hip hop, passing through electronic music that gives the title a greater futuristic atmosphere. In addition, the Latch Brothers have remixed the songs from the prequel (which we recall were played by the likes of Bran Van 3000, The Prunes and BS 2000), resulting in an almost unprecedented musical accompaniment. To top it all off, there are some "extended versions" by other musicians on the defunct Grand Royal label: Bis, Cibo Matto, Scapegoat Wax and Russel Simins. WaveMaster's Hideki has also left his mark on the Xbox version of JSR: by him the opening track "The Concept Of Love". A track that has already entered the Evolution charts ...
The Latch Brothers discuss with Smilebit the possibility of composing some tracks of the Jet Set Radio Future soundtrack.
After an elaborate discussion, the proposal is accepted! In exchange for three copies of the game, the Latch Brothers will produce five unreleased tracks and the remix of those from the last edition. Of course, the final compensation was quite different....
(Page 57)
On the longevity side, Jet Set Radio has some ups and downs: although finishing the game the first time will not engage you for more than 10-15 hours in total, the Sega title is not the classic product that, once completed, you abandon altogether. In addition to the aforementioned characters to unlock, we will have the opportunity to "learn" new graffiti as well as to create new and customized ones. In this way, we will be able to unleash our artistic talent and daub virtual walls with only the limit of our creativity. In addition, multiplayer ensures (if you have friends to play with) a good number of additional hours of gameplay. There are five modes available, supporting up to four players: City Rush, a real speed race; Tagger's Tag, in which the goal is to "tag" your opponent first with spray paint; Graffiti Wars, the "graffiti war," in fact, where the winner will be the player who manages to cover as many walls as possible with their graffiti (you can even draw over each other's graffiti), Flag, a nice variation of the "capture the flag" seen in titles with pronounced shoot-em-up ambitions, and, finally, Ball Hog, a race through the chosen level in the company of a ball that we won't have to let get out of our hands.
The latter mode is even more fun when played "cooperatively" together with a partner to whom you can pass the sphere!
Looking for flaws in a title like Jet Set Radio Future leads one to first analyze the framing system: often, in fact, the virtual camera, in the grip of the speed at which your "skater" travels, tends to lose sight of the centrality of the scene. Other times you will have to move on very narrow surfaces, and, at times, the too-close view will be the cause of easy and deleterious falls. Although in the long run this slight flaw can be frustrating, it will be possible, at any point in the game, to bring the virtual camera view back perfectly behind our backs by simply squeezing the left trigger of the pad (somewhat as happens in Capcom's Maximo). It is actually likely that you will still make it through all the levels without too much trouble.
The difficulty, on the other hand, could and should have been calibrated in a more thoughtful way: overall, Jet Set Radio Future is quite simple to complete and, in some points, it is boring having to repeat the same situation too many times; just think of the fight with the boss of the last level: to get to the platform where he awaits you and to be able to face him, we could take more time than the actual fight requires. Also, the streamlined nature of the graffiti certainly doesn't add to the hostility of the missions. In any case, these are minor flaws, which in no way affect Jet Set Radio Future as a must for anyone with an Xbox and looking for a fast-paced and fun game, but also exceptional to watch and... to listen to! And if you loved the prequel on Dreamcast, you really can't miss it: JSRF is worth at least double its parent! - Ornella Lepre
“... the Sega title is not the classic product that, once completed, is completely abandoned.”
This is the amazing screen warping effect you will witness when you activate the turbo charge
The dialogues are all subtitled in Italian and help to better understand the story.
CONTROL BOX - XBOX
PLUS:
- Breathtaking graphics that are smooth and full of classy touches - Original and funny - Excellent Pal conversion - Numerous multiplayer modes
MINUS:
- Framing system not always perfect - Simplified graffiti system - Long-lived but not infinite
GRAPHICS - 9
PLAYABILITY - 9
LONGEVITY - 7
SOUND - 8
GLOBAL - 8
An original title, fun to play, beautiful to look at and full of touches of class. A must for new Xbox owners

It wasn’t that Miles didn’t want to invite Lana over to his house. No, he really, really did. Was super pumped for it actually.
But now as she was climbing through his window like they were in some old rom-com, suddenly he wished that he’d had some notice so he could actually clean the place up. Just a little. There were several hoodies and shirts strewn across the ground, school books open on his desk placed next to some drawings he’d been spending too much time on instead. His parents were less than thrilled to learn that he’d been suspended, but with Pleasant Hill mounting on top of all his other Spider-Man responsibilities, he’d been slipping. Snapping at teachers, not acting like himself.
Lana’s feet were already over the windowsill as Miles scrambled to throw some shirts into his hamper and shoved some of the school stuff on his desk to the side. But aside from that, the rest of his room was presentable. The wall behind his bed was covered in a graffiti style mural that he’d finally convinced his mother to let him paint, with the promise that he’d cover it up if they ever moved. He was trying to cooly lean against the speaker near his desk as she entered as if he hadn’t just been panicking as he smiled at her.
After everything she’d just been through in that town, Miles would never close his room off to her if she needed it. “Lana, hey.” He received her text about five minutes ago asking to come over, worry etched on his brows as he rubbed the back of his neck. “Sorry, it’s kind’ve a mess in here right now. Hope that’s chill.”

Lola’s Room: Research and Development
Tumblr media
This process was so long but rewarding!!
While we were gearing up to design ‘Lola’s Room’, a 2000s girly pop-inspired film, my role as the art director involved diving deep into research to capture the essence of that era. It was all about encompassing the space in the vibrant and colorful world of early 2000s pop culture, from the fashion trends and music videos to iconic movie aesthetics and interior design.
I spent lots of research time looking over some old magazines, music videos, and films from the 2000s. There was lots of bold colors, quirky patterns, and unique textures that defined the era. We wanted our film to feel like a nostalgic trip back to the days of boy bands, glittery lip gloss, and teen rom-coms.
Tumblr media
Collaborating with India as Production Designer was a fun experience. We brainstormed ways to infuse the film with whimsical and eye-catching elements that would transport viewers to a world filled with pink velour tracksuits, bedazzled flip phones, and funky graffiti walls. We sourced vintage props and experimented with set designs to create a visual feast of nostalgia.
Tumblr media
We attempted to carefully curate each item to evoke a sense of fun and playfulness that defined the girly pop culture of that time. It was all about finding the perfect balance between authenticity and stylized fantasy, ensuring that our production design felt both nostalgic and fresh.
Tumblr media
As we brought our research to life on set, it was incredibly rewarding to see our vision come together. The vibrant colors, playful aesthetics, and whimsical production design opportunities truly set the stage for a film that celebrated the joy and exuberance of the 2000s girly pop era. It was a labor of love that allowed us to channel our inner nostalgia and create a visually captivating world that audiences could escape into, even if just for a couple of hours. Working on this project as an art director was an unforgettable experience—one that reminded me of the magic that comes with blending creativity, research, and a passion for storytelling.

Another one.
1:
If people really believe "Cringe is dead", somebody should've looked at Prokopetz or whatever he's called about his take "VN's/videogames will never be fully preserved because they're pervy" and how full of shit he is.
Because more respected mediums like film and literature have people defending more controversial works like Birth Of A Nation because "they're still part of history".
Shit I bet there's book historians that want to protect something like L*lita.
Only nerdier mediums like games or anime have this issue and that's why people even defend censorship now.
It's also a result of "anime is embarrasing in front of my parents" SA Goon shit that is mostly prevalent in American's influence online.
I bet if you go to Italy, you'd find graffiti pantings of Gundam or people singing the Lupin the 3rd theme.
There's modern releases of games that put up "attention, the content here is outdated" warnings and STILL somehow cut away stuff.
All the people going "MGS was always political chud" will say nothing when the MGS3 remake cuts content because they have no actual principles to stand on.
2:
Going back to "websites used to have different cultures/personalities", you can tell Zoomers fuck up ironic 2000's internet nostalgia when they mix up references.
Like putting Smosh next to Newgrounds when both popular NG celebs and their fans used to say "Pewdiepie is fucking cancer".
3:
If anything, people prefer when a guy calls the Mario movie "woke" than calling it "CalArts".
Because those TheQuartering types are goofy in a blatant useful idiot way, so people can use them as an example (Plus, they compliment other culture war idiots, even people that claim to not care about culture wars).
But the guy that calls the Mario movie "CalArts" comes from a genuine nerdy interest in animation history and at worst "sounds mean" but isn't really wrong.
Because people in nerdy hobbies got "less nerdy" and "media literacy" is more about pretending to care about politics and mix it with media than actual interest in media and its history.
Hell, they're more ok with Funko Pop "consoomers" than the "This is CalArts" guy.
Makes me think making fun of Joss Whedon or shitting on Demon Souls' remake should've never caught on, because those come from people with actual knowledge/observation skills and people online copy opinions without actually believing them properly.
Instead, people will pretend some Youtuber "figured it out" and wasn't the one poorly copying info to begin with.
4:
"Game preservation" should mean something literal but it's also becoming a bit of a buzzword when you see it associated with scummy shit like Limited Run Games or WayForward's remake of ClockTower with an inferior art style.
Because preserving art should break certain laws if necessary.
Just pick the actual game files as they are and PROTECT THEM.
Even if a remake/port is really good, make sure the original is still available.
I used to hate that Doom 64 EX requires the N64 rom of the game to work but looking back, that was probably the most important part of that port.
5:
With the 2 "takes" mentioned above, nerd culture degredation goes more ways than just "guy who made fun of PC stuff is now PC himself".
Like people having less interesting observations, forgetting interesting/useful knowledge or even defending certain corporate things.
The old guard stagnates in ways that even impact more special areas besides just getting weirdly political but people on 4chan still only focus on "gatekeeping" the new blood when the old one is showing problems.
/a/ isn't even bothering to say "stop with the shills" over the One Piece live action show.
6:
"They/them pussy" feels like a very weird contradicting term.
On one hand, it adheres to modern gender "bodies and spaces" stuff but on another, it features a slang term that people would call it misogynist.
You're mixing something part of a certain culture of acceptance with a supposedly sexist term.
It's like using a term that complements black people and mixing it with the literal N word.
Makes no sense but then again, this is the culture some people choose.
7:
A fun thing about videogames is because they're recent, "personal favorite" choices mix up with historical ones.
So someone brings up both MGS or Half-Life in a "most important games of all time" list and a list of personal choices, even if they still include obscure games in the latter.
Whereas with music, one list will have Mozart or Beethoven, but then you'll have a list that includes modern rock/rap stars.
Even with illustration, you can put Da Vinci or Picasso in one list and the other will have HR Giger or Wayne Barlowe.
But this can also be a problem on its own.
8:
Because crossovers can attract autism, it's weird when you see people attached to "crossover-ish" stuff that isn't as enthusiastic.
I mean stuff like Robot Chicken sketches, those Meet The Spartan/Scary Movie movies or even BroForce and ERBOH.
Not the same as Smash or Kingdom Hearts.
9:
An important skill to have is acknowledge when something new is also smart.
One thing is seeing something new, another is when you can tell it's smart or dumb in certain occasions/examples.
10:
I feel like if you make videos like Let's Plays, commentaries, podcasts etc you shouldn't be offended by "content creator" as a term.
That goes for actual creatives like animators because they're the ones that gave up on Youtube.
Because even the best "commentary" Youtuber is technically part of the problem of why YT is the way it is.
Anything that can work as "background noise" is what's currently big on YT and keeps feeding the system.
It doesn't matter if Cr1tikal steals basic opinions or if Veritasium lies in some science videos, because most people don't really "watch" them properly.
"Here's why you missed the point of Breaking Bad".
Your own audience is missing the point of your shitty essay because they're making it background noise while looking at Subway Surfers gameplay and food videos.
But with Speedoru's Punch Punch Forever, you have to actually ENGAGE with it.
11:
I think the reason why dark humor is important is because it can come from a place of certain knowledge.
Think of why some offensive/edgy jokes can go to far, because the joke teller had to look some info or learn certain things to make a joke about a tragedy feel heavy.
Even if it's a guy spending too much time on 4chan or ED.
It's why SsethTzeentach made funny jokes because he had a real job related to chemistry and even EmptyHero's jokes are creative as if he did research or had interest in weird topics.
This is why Zoomer's "safe" humor like "i hate the Fr*nch" or "Big Tobacco" sucks: It's not just safe, it's also coming from a place with weak frame of references so you can tell a literal kid thinks those are funny.
Though edgy Newgrounds animations can still be crude and have basic references but still.
People think Family Guy is bad in general because it has "adult themes", when at the same time a lot of interesting and important artists/works of art tackle adult themes.
And you also have to consider the counter-culture aspect of going through crude or uncomfortable areas.
But with FG hate, we're yet again in the area of cartoon reviewers that only want comfortable cartoons I guess.

Fragments of a Cybernetic Mind: Chapter 9 - Daddy Issues
Summary Half a year has passed since the events of Christmas of 2064. The world is slowly adjusting to sentient ROMs. But Turing is distracted from their task as ROM-kind’s leader and ambassador by another obligation they carry. They want to deliver Leon Dekker’s last words to his daughter. But first, they’ll have to find her, which doesn’t prove easy. They ask their journalist friend for help, who seems less than thrilled.
Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 10 (final) Epilogue
cn: family problems, bigotry
Turing spends the next weeks combing through the memory data, but without any success. Any leads they find just terminate in dead ends as the data becomes eaten up by glitches, corruptions or the memories just cut off at the wrong point. What they do find in new information - mostly more insight on Sarah - doesn’t lead anywhere substantive either, not even when they cross-reference the mesh.
I asked Lexi to keep her eyes and ears open, since she is meddling with extra-legal activity as part of her job. She finds some people claiming to have contact to military androids who are willing to do dirty deeds for the right pay, but it all seems very dubious. The same results from Crow’s side.
I continue searching the mesh for mentions of Dekker and other combat androids, reading my way through accounts of violent crimes attributed to them. For some reason, it doesn’t trigger my trauma as much as even the happiest of Dekker’s memories did.
None of this gives us any information on Dekker’s family. It’s like his entire existence has been scrubbed of the mesh, and the world at large, which seems a particularly cruel fate for him. If it weren’t for my own pride, I would consider talking to Flores again.
At least my writing is going well. My editor has been sending me notes the last weeks, and together we give the text the last polish. I’m particularly proud of the chapter describing the events in Parallax’ server room, though I still have to think of a good pseudonym for Dekker. While most of what Flores said left me bitter, I do agree with her that his full name doesn’t need to be known, especially now that we might involve his daughter. So far all I got is his name with some letters shuffled around.
It's one of the last days of summer, though the heat is not any less intense for it, burning down on the market street and making the air flimmer. That’s Neo San Francisco for you. Turing, Lexi and I fled inside the Hassy bar, where we ordered some of Ramona’s newest creations: the Iced Hassy Hot Cup.
We are surprised to see Chad and Oli here as well, who are enjoying one of the last days of their summer break before it’s back to school. Oli is having a deep conversation with Ramona about a new VR drama, while Chad leans cooly against the counter and pretends he doesn’t care, though he keeps chiming in with opinions on one particular character he seems to identify with a lot.
“Hey, no loitering!” Lexi calls over to him as a joke.
“What?” Chad yells. “What are you, a cop?”
“Chad...” Oli puts a hand on his arm. “That’s the lady who arrested us for spraying graffiti in November.”
Chad flinches back.
“Relax, I haven’t worn the badge for months now,” Lexi says, leaning back against the cushioned seat with her Hassy.
“Oh, yeah,” Chad says. “So you can’t do nuthin’ to us. We could trash the whole place, and you couldn’t stop us!” He climbs on the nearest empty table, garnering looks.
“I could,” Ramona interjects. “And I will.”
“Chad, please don’t get us banned from this place,” Oli pleads. “I like it here. And I like Ramona.”
“Fine, I’ll not trash this place,” Chad gives in. “But not because I’m scared or anything. I just like hanging out here. You don’t piss where you drink.”
“Especially because after this performance, I’m not letting you use the restroom,” Ramona says.
“Come off that table, Starfucker, and sit with us,” I call up to the boy.
“Hey, you called me it.” Chad grins and jumps off the table that starts dangerously teetering. “Oli, you haven’t called me it in ages.”
“Do you sign like that on your college applications as well?” Oli asks as he walks over to our table, rolling his eyes.
“For the art schools, yes.”
“Wait, I thought your dad was against art school?” Oli says.
“Yeah, he wants me to go to law school, so I can do the HR’s work in court,” Chad explains. “Which sounds boring as fuck.”
“I’d love to see you face off against Jess,” I say. “That would end in a cat fight.”
“The only way you should ever be in court is as a defendant,” Lexi notes.
“I’m sending out applications to art schools anyway,” Chad says. “And even if Dad won’t support me, I know Mom’s got my back.”
“Wait, I thought you weren’t in contact anymore?” Oli asks. “After the whole, uh, gene splicing thing?”
Chad looks embarrassed. “She, erm, actually reached out to me last month. So we met up. Kept it secret from Dad, he wouldn’t understand.”
Oli’s face lights up with a wide smile. “Chad, that’s amazing!”
“No big deal. We just talked,” he scoffs. “Caught up a bit. I was never really into the HR stuff anyways.”
“That’s sweet,” Ramona says. “I can’t believe your father would separate a family over some bigoted ideas about purity. That’s straight up evil.”
“I am very happy for you, Starfucker,” Turing says.
“Yeah, yeah, we’re all happy for me.” Chad blushes, brushing his hand over his face in a way that makes it look like he’s trying to punch the tears out of his eyes. “Anyways, we talked a bit about my plans for the future. And Mom said she supports my decisions, and that she’d pay for art school. Said that’s what parents are for, after all.”
There’s a loud crashing sound as this time, a table does fall over, drinks flying through the air and to the floor. Oli has to dodge out of the way.
“Damn it, I just cleaned there!” Ramona cries out. “And it’s my shift as well! The ROM’s on break.”
“We are so sorry,” Turing says. “We will help you clean up.”
“Hey, is everything okay?” Lexi asks me.
I’m staring ahead, my mind racing. Then I turn to Lexi: “Can you get us access to Fairlight’s finance accounts?”
“What?” She looks at me in confusion. “Did your drink have too much caffeine?”
“Did you figure out a way to track Fairlight?” Turing wants to know, their face a question mark.
“But some of the brightest minds in the country already looked through everything he left behind,” Lexi explains. “And they didn’t find anything. TOMCAT included. Besides, the accounts are all frozen.”
“They weren’t looking for this,” I say. “And it’s not Fairlight I am trying to find. So can you give me access or do I have to ask TOMCAT?”
“I can try to call in a few favors,” Lexi says, still confused.
“What did you find out?” Turing asks.
“It’s what Chad said,” I explain. “A good parent secures their child’s future, even if they might not be able to be there for them.”
