Scabiosa gigantea (giant scabious)
What's in a name?
All flowers have a scientific name but many also sport a common name. With the exception of the stinking corpse lily (Rafflesia arnoldii), most of these common names are positive. Thus Helianthus becomes a sunflower and even the lowly Taraxacum officinale is called a dandelion. Now what could be more ego-enhancing that being compared to a well-dressed lion?
Other flowers are more often called by their scientific name. Campanulas may be known as bellflowers but everyone I know calls them campanulas. Similarly, Scabiosa may be called a pincushion plant but most people refer to them as scabiosas.
Scabiosa is a Latin word that refers to the insufferable scabies mite. This tiny human parasite causes unbelievable itching and is usually contracted with prolonged skin-to-skin contact with someone who is already infected (read: In adults it's usually a sexually transmitted disease). Children can also catch scabies from infected clothing and bedding as well as infected cats and dogs (it can cause 'mange' in pets). These days, a doctor will prescribe Kwellada lotion but in ancient times, rubbing the skin with this plant was the only remedy.
I caught scabies when I was nineteen. I was going through a bit of a sexual 'dry spell' at that time and I caught it from someone else's sleeping bag. I went to the doctor, bought a tube of Kwellada lotion, boiled all my bedding and clothing, and the itching was gone in two weeks. I offer this embarrassing confession as a public service announcement. I assure you, @flowerishness will return to less disturbing content tomorrow.

12/01/24-Lakeside and home
Photos taken in this set are of: 1. Stinking iris leaves with possible Cerodontha iridis pupae or mines, someone I know online mentioned about looking out for them when I posted a photo of this plant yesterday in Winchester so I had a look for them today remembering there was a stinking iris at Lakeside so this was nice as I enjoyed the bright red berries again too. 2. Hanging basket in the garden. 3. Daffodil shoots and ivy. 4. Spider at home. 5. Robin at Lakeside. 6. One of a few Moorhens I enjoyed intimate views of on my lunch time walk at Lakeside. 7. A bit of scabious in the flower bed area by the visitor centre at Lakeside, a beautifully colourful scene on a moody day. 8, 9 and 10. Views including catkins and mistletoe at Lakeside.
At Lakeside it was also good to see Tufted Duck, Great Crested Grebe, Herring Gull, Carrion Crows which I enjoyed great close views of on the green out the front on the way to Lakeside with one doing a nice distinctive crowing sound at Lakeside, Magpie, Woodpigeon, beautiful scenes of dashing Blue Tits along the northern path, wild carrot and old man's beard with Green Woodpecker heard. At home today I enjoyed precious connected natural moments looking at a Silver-sided Sector spider spinning in its web this evening and enjoyed views of Jackdaw, Magpie and Collared Dove.

07/10/2023-Lakeside Country Park
Pictures taken in this set are of: 1. A beautiful Migrant Hawker, I was thrilled to see a fair few beside Concorde Lake for the second day running such prepossessing insects. I was determined to have a photo to show for this run of seeing them at Lakeside today and yesterday and Winnall Moors this morning having missed a few photo opportunities and like the little boy looking for a bear (mentioned in my previous post about my Winnall Moors trip today) I didn't give up, getting a few. I'd never got a dragonfly in flight photo before. 2. One of a few quirky Ring-necked Parakeets it was a pleasure to hear and then see in the woods in the south west corner of the site, a powerful bird moment today. 3. Robin. 4 and 7. One of a few nice mushrooms seen which included another one which were possible mower's mushroom. 5, 6 and 8. Views including nice reflections. 9. Ruby rose hips. 10. Wild carrot.
Fine views of Common Darter, Small Copper, Small White, Speckled Wood and I believe Red Admiral seen here made it a fantastic insect day with a spider enjoyed here too I am loving seeing so many in this key time of year for seeing them. Great Crested Grebe, Moorhen, Coot, Mallards including flying, Magpie, Carrion Crow and Jackdaw were bird highlights here. Other nice plants seen were buttercup, late knapweed, white and broad-leaved clover, scabious, loads of pineappleweed in one area, chamomile, hawksbit possible autumn hawksbit, meadow crane's-bill, beautiful hogweed seed heads in the sun, blackthorn sloes, hawthorn berries and wild service tree berries.
