Sea Pig (Scotoplanes globosa), family Elpididae, specimens found in the deep sea off of the Pacific Coast of North America

The Sea Pig is a benthic deep-sea sea cucumber (class Holothuroidea) that walks using long tube-like limbs.

Like most sea cucumbers, they feed on detritus.

They have often been see congregating in groups of up to 30 individuals.

The 3 species of Scotoplanes are difficult to tell apart by sight.

The type of symmetry exhibited by echinoderms has been constantly bouncing back and forth like a ping pong ball.

First, their ancestors were radially symmetrical, like most life. It was decent enough.

Then the ancestors of modern echinoderms decided to try bilateral symmetry a shot. It seemed like a good deal, and all the other deuterostomes were doing it.

But then, they decided 'Y'know what, radial symmetry was better actually,' so they all became radially symmetrical again, but it was this weird hipster radial symmetry with five parts, idk.

But then the SEA PIG decided 'I take it back, Imma be bilaterally symmetrical AND YOU CAN'T STOP ME.'

The sea pig, or Scotoplanes globose, is a species of sea cucumber named after its round body and pink colouring, and is certainly one of the weirdest animals. These bloated, water-filled sausages can grow up to 15cm in length, and are found in all of the world’s oceans.
