CHAPTER 6
Navy Yard Washington, D.C. 10:13 p.m.
The Navy Yard sits on an unappealing southeast corner of the city pressed up against a polluted strip of the Potomac. It was used for ship maintenance and ammunition manufacturing during the war and continued for a little while after. The surrounding warehouses and docks became defunct once the war effort projects dried up. The shipyard devolved into a revolving door for small-time criminals which begat large-time mobsters. Security was usually an older night watchman who was past his prime and easy to track. Smaller boats would pull up and drop off cargo whenever they could. Deals were quick and dirty. Soon, respectable businesses in the southeast east district wanted a piece and formed a “two ships passing” style agreement. I suppose it saved them from having their goods sent to Anacostia or down towards Virginia.
A flash of lightning brightened up a cluster of clouds. A rumble of thunder echoed in the distance. Fortunately, I had arrived and got into position just prior to the downpour. I sat on a dirt driveway off the access road, which was quickly becoming a muddy river. There was a canal to my left at the nine o’clock position, the Potomac dead ahead at my twelve, and the edge of a warehouse was at my three o’clock. The rain sounded like I had parked my Pontiac under Niagara Falls. Water pounded against the roof, rushed down the windshield in sheets of grey making the wiper blades useless. The water-logged Buddy Rich solo played on against the car and I had a feeling my view was not going to clear up anytime soon.
I fidgeted with a sunflower seed I pulled from the half-empty bag on my dashboard. Ideally I would toss the shells out the window but given the weather and trying to keep a low profile, there was an unsalted graveyard on the floor of the sedan. I cracked the shell with my teeth and added it to the discarded brethren. The seed danced around my tongue and I turned my wrist trying to make out the time on my watch. The minute hand eased a tick past the quarter hour. I then picked up the radio and connected with the precinct dispatch.
“This is Detective Mulder, over.”
Static. Click. Click.
I pressed the button again on the comm as I leaned over and grabbed my hat.
“This is Detective Mulder, do you copy? Over.”
“Evening detective, this is Officer Stanz. Always nice hearing your voice in the dead of the night.”
“You too, sweetheart.”
“So Mulder, what’s your status?”
“Waiting for this storm to strip the paint off my car,” I replied as I ran a hand over my face. “Visibility is shit sitting here in the driver’s seat. Regrettably, I think I’ll have to go on foot. Over.”
“Copy that,” she said, “Hopefully you won’t need to build an ark.”
“Honey, I’d rather swim for it. Over and out.”
I placed my hat on my head, pocketed the small binoculars that were resting on the seat next to me, and opened the car door into the deluge. The rain sounded different as it slapped against the water in the canal, rang against the scrap metal, and beat against the dock. I dashed towards a scrap pile and crouched down amongst rusted metal and what I hoped were empty oil drums. If there was a gunfight I didn’t want to go up like a Roman candle. I peered over an oil drum and got eyes on the warehouse through the binoculars.
The info Krycek had provided Skinner said three was the magic number; Vincenti favored odds over evens. Guess I know how he’d play the roulette wheel at the casino. I saw a worn metal sign tacked to the side of the building letting me know I was in the right place. There was a dim light piercing through a shadow on the dock so somebody was home. Suddenly, headlights came down the other end of the access road and I got out of sight. The car went dark and I counted to ten then shifted my position. Rain poured off the brim of my hat, dripped down my neck so I flipped up the collar; glad I chose the dark grey trench coat. The new vehicle slowly crept closer to the front of the warehouse and idled. Once the hood touched the dim light source I knew it looked familiar; the distinct yellow paint job of a D.C. cab. I squinted and tried to memorize the plate number through spikes of rain. The passenger door opened flashing the checkered pattern on the side panel. A figure stepped out and rounded the front of the car then paused at the driver’s side before heading into the warehouse. Just then, a headlight shone on the river. I listened to the putter of the engine as it pulled up to the edge of the dock. Once the engine was cut I watched through the binoculars and saw one of the goons wave as the boat approached the dock. It was the same goon who was with Lodi at the restaurant. He approached the boat as they cut off the light. My grip switched and my eyes strained.
The D.C.cab was still idling along with the boat at the dock. I kept to the shadows. I could feel moisture collect at my mid back from an adrenaline surge. That all too familiar feeling. Suddenly as a thunder clap sounded, I had a flashback to a sunrise mission on Wake Island: Rain made my hands very slick on the Carbine as I tried to ready my aim. Bullets whizzed around me. The mud was so thick. An explosion went off nearby, my ear was ringing. My sergeant was yelling commands. I held my breath for three counts and pulled the trigger, a bright spray of red marked where I hit a Japanese soldier square in the throat. First time I successfully made that shot. Confirmed kill.
I closed my eyes and dug my nails into the palm of my hand, one pain replaced another and the memory faded. My breath was short but steady. I needed to focus. If the goon was there, Lodi was surely lurking somewhere inside. I just needed to get eyes on him. The backside of the building seemed like a safer option and I pressed against the rotting wood as I moved around to a shabby staircase. A quick glance up and I climbed towards the single door. The steps were slippery and I was waiting for my foot to punch through a soft spot in the warped planks. At the landing I readied my gun and turned the knob, slowly opening the unlocked door. The upper level looked clear. It was a nice respite from the storm. I held my position and holstered my weapon. My trenchcoat felt like it took on about twenty pounds of rainwater and I would have enjoyed shaking off like a wet shaggy dog. Drips from the edge of my coat marked my hiding spot like an X on a treasure map. Luckily I didn’t need my binoculars from my perch because, as if on cue, Carlo Lodi’s hulking frame lumbered across the floor.
He blew a puff of smoke from a dying cigarette. His goon handed over a white package which Lodi bounced in his hand with approval. He gave a wave and a couple of men filed out of the warehouse and approached the boat. I could just barely make out the edge of it bobbing at the side of the dock. The lackeys quickly transferred packages from the boat to the trunk of the idling taxi. I adjusted my stance and craned my neck. The cab had a picture of the Capitol dome and what looked like the word ‘Speedy.’ They were using the taxi company to move the heroin. I heard the boat engine rev and pull away from the dock. One of the men approached the driver’s side door of the cab and pulled the driver out. He pushed the confused cabbie away from his vehicle. Then the man swiftly plunged a knife in the cabbie’s side, repeating the motion until the poor driver went limp. He was then dropped in the Potomac like yesterday’s garbage. The goon took his place behind the wheel and I knew I needed to get back outside to tail him.
I saw the headlights from the commandeered taxi so I was careful not to be spotted. I couldn’t tell which direction he was going to pull off so I waited behind a different wood and scrap pile. The chug of the engine caught my attention. The lights appeared to be moving backwards and when they were far enough, I made a break for my car. Inside via the passenger door I fished out my key and started the engine then grabbed the radio comm.
“This is Mulder, does anyone read?”
I backed up on the access road and spun the wheel in the right direction. That sweet voice came through my radio once again.
“This is Stanz. Over.”
“I got eyes on Lodi. Shipment confirmed at Dock 3 at the Navy Yard, get anyone from the Southeast Division who isn’t asleep down here now. Beat cops, vice, narco, I’ll take whatever I can get. Take caution, he isn’t alone.”
I pressed the gas a little harder keeping textbook distance as I locked onto the cab. I clicked the comm again.
“I’m in pursuit of an accomplice heading west on Waterfront Dr. It’s a taxi, plate number: TK-0421. Speedy Capitol Cab Company. Over”
“Roger that. I’ll relay to Captain Skinner. Over and out.”
I tapped the break as I pulled around a corner and turned up Patterson Ave. then on to M Street. The cab slowed to stop at a red light a block ahead of me. Mighty nice of him to use a turn signal. He switched lanes and merged onto New Jersey Ave. angling towards Capitol Hill. The street cut a sharp diagonal and the famed white dome came into view. I heard my radio crackle but ignored it. My eyes felt like I had rubbed them with sandpaper, I hated to blink for fear of losing my target. I was dangerously tired, a second wind was long overdue.
Street lights and neon bounced against puddles in the street. The rain had slacked off to the point where it was an annoying stubborn mist that couldn’t make up its mind if it wanted to stop or go full tilt. I had cracked my window and listened to the rush of tires on slick pavement, splashing in potholes and against manhole covers.
The cab turned right onto Independence Ave. I tailed a little closer than protocol distance, keeping only one car between us. I missed the signal change and watched my target turn left on First St. Impatiently I waited for the signal, hoping I hadn’t lost them. After I made the turn I slowed down and searched for the taxi. I spotted it parked in front of the Library of Congress, parked like he was picking up a fare. There was a man standing on the curb holding an umbrella. I performed a u-turn maneuver and pulled into an empty parallel space, threw the gear shift into park and advanced on the suspect.
“DCPD!” I yelled as I approached the driver’s side door with my badge and gun drawn. The driver calmly rolled down the window and lifted a meaty hand from the wheel. A thick signet ring on his pinky finger looked like butcher’s twine around a sausage link.
“No, keep ‘em on the wheel! Don’t move.”
He smirked and obliged. I held my gun on him and glanced in the backseat; a red ember glowed from the tip of a freshly lit cigarette.
“Is there something we can do for you, detective?”
That voice. That distinctive snake hiss I couldn’t forget; it slowly coiled around like a wisp of smoke. The smoking man. Spender’s father.
“Fancy meeting you here. Looks like you chose the wrong taxi tonight.”
“On the contrary detective, it’s you who chose poorly.”
“Yeah I have a knack for doing that,” I retorted, fingers gripping the handle of my gun, “Alright, you — out of the car. Hands where I can see them.” I pulled the door open and took a step back, letting the goon out. I made him turn to face the car, hands atop the roof. The smoking man leaned forward from the backseat, cigarette tucked between his lips.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
“Hey! You are next on my list.” I shouted then continued frisking the goon, finding a small handgun and a switchblade. I stuffed them into my trench coat pocket.
“Careful, you’re gonna make me stiff,” he said with a laugh as I patted his legs down to the ankle, finding another blade in a clever holster. I pulled out my handcuffs and clasped his wrists behind his back. I pushed my gun in between his shoulder blades, directing him toward the rear of the taxi and told him to open the trunk. I felt the heat from the exhaust pipe blowing against my pant leg, creating a small dry patch on an otherwise drenched pair of trousers. The goon shook his head and flipped the latch. The trunk appeared empty.
“Alright where is it?” I asked,
“Where’s what?”
“The package. The white package.”
“Ain’t no package here.”
I leaned in and felt around, searching for a latch or tab or something that would indicate a hidden compartment. As my free hand finally found what it was looking for, my occupied hand dug the tip of the standard issue deeper into a lesser known pressure point in the goon’s back. The pulled a section of fabric loose, revealing a hidden compartment that was packed full of white packages.
Sirens wailed in the distance. I tossed the goon in the back of my car, adjusting his handcuffs so there was no funny business, then radioed in my location. The smoking man approached under the cover of his umbrella.
“I could have your badge for this, detective.”
“You can try.”
“This small incident won’t change anything.”
“Just keep telling yourself that. I have officers from every direction to bust up the little party at the Navy Yard. This is the tip of the iceberg and I’m willing to go all the way to the core.”
We stood silent, listening to the approaching sirens. The rain had finally stopped but the percussive sound of drips could still be heard in the surrounding trees. A plume of smoke wafted in the air. He was about to say something to me but a squad car had arrived coming to a stop in the middle of the street. Two unis got out with guns drawn.
“I’m taking my suspect back to the 3rd,” I called out, “You boys can take this one for a ride.”

More movies (and a tv series) on youtube to keep you busy
List 1 / List 2
Here’s a third update of movies that you can watch in full on youtube since you’re stuck inside
Documentaries about movies:
Visions of Light: The Art of Cinematography (1992): Featuring interviews with more than two dozen major cinematographers and a ton of clips, this is a useful and enjoyable primer for anyone interested in learning what a DoP does
Vittorio Storaro: Writing With Light (1992): This is a shorter (40 minute) television doc focusing on one specific cinematographer, Vittorio Storaro, famed for his collaborations with Bertolucci and for shooting Hollywood movies like Apocalypse Now and Reds
The Epic That Never Was (1965): In 1937, Josef Von Sternberg started shooting an adaptation of I, Claudius starring Charles Laughton as Claudius. Dirk Boagarde hosts this lively documentary examining why the film was never completed, featuring the surviving footage from the 1937 shoot.
Hollywood: A Celebration of the American Silent Film (1980): Kevin Brownlow and David Gill’s 13-episode miniseries about the silent film era is considered the gold standard for documentaries about film history, but the impossibility of negotiating the rights to all the clips used at a reasonable price has kept it off of dvd or blu-ray. Luckily, that didn’t stop someone from putting it on youtube, although episode 12 has in fact been blocked due to a copyright claim.
Buster Keaton: A Hard Act To Follow (1987) Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3: Another Kevin Brownlow and David Gill miniseries, this one, as you’ve probably guessed, covers the life and films of Buster Keaton over three episodes.
More movies:
Powell/Pressburger: Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, aka the Archers, were one of the greatest writer/director teams in film history (and a favorite of Scorsese, who seemingly made it his life’s mission to ensure that their films were restored and available), and three of their incredibly charming, magical movies are on youtube. Of the available ones, I Know Where I’m Going! is probably the best to start with.
I Know Where I’m Going! (1945): Dave Kehr on the film:  “Michael Powell's 1945 film resists easy classification: it opens as a screwball comedy, grows into a mystical, Flaherty-like study of man against the elements, and concludes as a warm romance. Wendy Hiller, in one of the best roles the movies gave her, is a toughened, materialistic young woman on her way to meet her millionaire fiance in the Hebrides; Roger Livesey is the young man she meets when a storm blows up and prevents her crossing to the islands. Funny and stirring, in quite unpredictable ways, with the usual Powellian flair for drawing the universal out of the screamingly eccentric.”
A Canterbury Tale (1944):  The Criterion jacket copy: “Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s beloved classic A Canterbury Tale is a profoundly personal journey to Powell’s bucolic birthplace of Kent, England. Set amid the tumult of the Second World War, yet with a rhythm as delicate as a lullaby, the film follows three modern-day incarnations of Chaucer’s pilgrims—a melancholy “landgirl,” a plainspoken American GI, and a resourceful British sergeant—who are waylaid in the English countryside en route to the mythical town and forced to solve a bizarre village crime. Building to a majestic climax that ranks as one of the filmmaking duo’s finest achievements, the dazzling A Canterbury Tale has acquired a following of devotees passionate enough to qualify as pilgrims themselves.”
Gone To Earth (1950): Made under unhappy circumstances (David O. Selznick producing), this is a gorgeous technicolor romance starring Jennifer Jones as a nature loving young woman forced into a choice between two “civilized” men, with tragic results.
Straub/Huillet: If you’re looking for something easy and relaxing to watch during the quarantine, I’d recommend literally anything else other than the films of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet. J. Hoberman on the couple: “Straub-Huillet, as they preferred to be called, are cinema’s conscience — an antidote to all the junk movies you’ve ever seen. Drawing on Kafka, Cézanne, Brecht, Schoenberg and Malraux, to name only some of their best-known sources, Straub-Huillet films are meant to raise ethical questions on subjects as varied as proper camera placement and the appropriate political approach to the subject.“We make our films so that audiences can walk out of them,” Mr. Straub once said, perhaps not altogether in jest.” Of the available ones, Class Relations, their adaptation of Kafka’s unfinished novel Amerika, seems to be agreed upon as the easiest place to start as it’s the closest to a straightforward narrative, although History Lessons has also been recommended as a relatively easy starting place by some people. Not Reconciled, which compresses an epic Heinrich Boll novel following three generations throughout multiple timelines into 52-minutes, is not recommended to start with. MUBI did a retrospective of their works and had essays commissioned for each one to help viewers out so I’ll link those with each film. Hit Closed Captions for subtitles.
Not Reconciled (1965): Here’s a 10-minute video essay by critic Richard Brody that will help you have a slightly easier time with Not Reconciled if you decide to give it a try. Here’s the MUBI essay
Othon (1970): In the 17th century Pierre Corneille wrote Othon, set in ancient Rome. Straub-Huillet’s adaptation is shot in the actual ruins of Roman palaces with modern buildings and cars visible in the background. The MUBI essay
History Lessons (1972): An adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s The Business Affairs of Julius Caesar. From the MUBI essay: “In the film, an unnamed young man tours Rome and conducts interviews with toga-clad members of ancient Roman society on the subject of “C,” meaning of course Julius Caesar. It plays like Citizen Kane shorn of any of the flashbacks that bulk out that film: here, it is all exposition, reminisces, impressions. Interspersed through these sedentary discussions are a series of randomly protracted car rides through the city, all recorded in unbroken takes from the backseat of the young man’s Fiat 500.From this brief description alone, I’m sure you can see why structuralist-minded academics in the seventies had a field day.“
Fortini/Canti (1976): From the MUBI essay: “In Fortini/Canti, the Italian Communist writer Franco Fortini reads aloud from his Dogs of the Sinai (only recently translated into English for the first time), a memoir of his life as an Italian Jew and an extended reflection on the aftermath of the Third Arab–Israeli War of 1967 and its representation in the Italian media and by the political class. [...]  Like all of Straub-Huillet’s movies, this astonishingly combative film follows an internal rhythm born out of the particulars of landscape, of speech, and of the physiognomies of its actors. It begins with an extended recording of a television newscast about Israel/Palestine (thus distancing the audience from the warped words and images on screen), a quotation from Fortini that connects like a punch in the jaw (“People don’t like having to change their minds. When they have to, they do so in secret. The certainty of having been tricked turns into cynicism. Gain for the cause of conservatism”), and then alternates between short jabs like these and more sustained verbal and visual attacks.”
Too Early/Too Late (1982): Serge Daney on the film: “No actors, not even characters. If there is an actor in TOO EARLY, TOO LATE, it’s the landscape. This actor has a text to recite: History, of which it is the living witness. The actor performs with a certain amount of talent: the cloud that passes, a breaking loose of birds, a break in the clouds; this is what the landscape’s performance consists of. This kind of performing is meteorological. One hasn’t seen anything like it for quite some time. Since the silent period, to be precise.” The MUBI essay
Class Relations (1984): The aforementioned adaptation of Kafka’s Amerika, often recommended as a place to start with Straub/Huillet. The MUBI essay
Hitchcock: Back to fun stuff, three Hitchcock classics.
The 39 Steps (1935): Dave Kehr: “As an artist, Alfred Hitchcock surpassed this early achievement many times in his career, but for sheer entertainment value it still stands in the forefront of his work.“
Shadow of a Doubt (1943): Kehr again: “Alfred Hitchcock’s first indisputable masterpiece. . . . Hitchcock’s discovery of darkness within the heart of small-town America remains one of his most harrowing films, a peek behind the facade of security that reveals loneliness, despair, and death. Thornton Wilder collaborated on the script; it’s Our Town turned inside out.“
Spellbound (1945): No one would argue it’s Hitchcock’s best and the psychoanalysis is very dated but with Gregory Peck, Ingrid Bergman, and Dali-designed dream sequences there’s still enjoyment to be had.
Ozu: One of Japan’s most beloved and revered filmmakers, he’s primarily known for his post-WWII family dramas, but his career stretched back to the silent era (although most of his silent films are lost). I Was Born But... is a good place to start but it’s not representative of the style he’s known for. Late Spring is where his later style fully emerges, and it’s a good place to start, so you might want to go in chronological order with these (Tokyo Story, widely considered one of the greatest films of all time, is also not a bad place to start).
I Was Born But... (1932): Jonathan Rosenbaum on the film: “One of Yasujiro Ozu's most sublime films, this late Japanese silent describes the tragicomic disillusionment of two middle-class boys who see their father demean himself by groveling in front of his employer; it starts off as a hilarious comedy and gradually becomes darker. Ozu's understanding of his characters and their social milieu is so profound and his visual style—which was much less austere and more obviously expressive during his silent period—so compelling that the film carries one along more dynamically than many of the director's sound classics. Though regarded in Japan mainly as a conservative director, Ozu was a trenchant social critic throughout his career, and the devastating understanding of social context that he shows here is full of radical implications.“
The Only Son (1936): Criterion’s jacket copy:  “Yasujiro Ozu’s first talkie, the uncommonly poignant The Only Son is among the Japanese director’s greatest works. In its simple story about a good-natured mother who gives up everything to ensure her son’s education and future, Ozu touches on universal themes of sacrifice, family, love, and disappointment. Spanning many years, The Only Son is a family portrait in miniature, shot and edited with its maker’s customary exquisite control.”
Late Spring (1949): Ignatiy Vishnevetsky: “Each shot in Late Spring is striking on its own; the mature Ozu belongs to that rare category of filmmakers whose work can be recognized from a single frame. But together—with all their abrupt shifts in visual perspective and time—they become a mosaic, deeply poignant and ultimately mysterious in the way it envisions a relationship between two people trapped by how much they care for one another. There are domestic dramas, and then there’s this.“
Tokyo Story (1953): Dave Kehr: “The film that introduced Yasujiro Ozu, one of Japan's greatest filmmakers, to American audiences (1953). The camera remains stationary throughout this delicate study of conflicting generations in a modern Japanese family, save for one heartbreaking moment when Ozu tracks around a corner to discover the grandparents, alone and forgotten. A masterpiece, minimalist cinema at its finest and most complex.“
Early Spring (1956): Ozu on the film: “I wanted to portray the life of a white-collar man — his happiness over graduating and becoming a member of society. His hopes for the future when he got his job have gradually dissolved and he realizes that, even though he has worked for years, he has accomplished nothing worth talking about. By delineating his life over a period of time, I wanted to portray what you might call the pathos of the white-collar life...I tried to avoid anything that would be dramatic and to accumulate only casual scenes of everyday life in hopes that the audience would feel the sadness of that kind of life”
Equinox Flower (1958): Vincent Canby: “One of Ozu's least dark comedies, which is not to say that it's carefree, but, rather, that it's gentle and amused in the way that it acknowledges time's passage, the changing of values and the adjustments that must be made between generations.“
Late Autumn (1960): Peter Bradshaw: “Another gem from the Ozu canon, a masterpiece of tendernesss and serio-comic charm, as tonally ambiguous and morally complex as anything he ever made.“
And the tv series:
The Armando Iannucci Shows: You may know Armando Iannucci from his films, In The Loop and The Death of Stalin, or from some of his other television shows like The Thick of It or Veep, or from his involvement in all the Alan Partridge series with Steve Coogan. You probably missed The Armando Iannucci shows, his stream of consciousness sketch comedy that ran for one season back in 2001 (it didn’t help that it debuted in September of 2001), but it’s probably the most purely funny thing he’s ever done.

College AU Sanders Sides Headcanons
Hey everyone! I’m getting back into writing and I also recently got accepted to college! I’m going to be a biology major :) With all of that going on, I started thinking of some Sanders Sides College AU Headcanons so here we go! Let’s start off by introducing everyone.
Roman Prince: Freshman. 18 years old. He’s a theatre major with a minor in musical composition. In his free time, Roman likes to write fanfiction correcting Disney movies. He also frequently uploads to his YouTube channel which is called RomanticRoman. He mainly does covers and skits. Occasionally, he will do livestreams where he reads his stories.
Logan Berry: Freshman. 17 years old. Logan skipped a year because he’s just that smart. He’s a psychology major with a specialization in teaching. He wants to become a professor. In his free time, Logan shadows the campus counselor, Emile Picani.
Virgil Sanders: Freshman. 18 years old. He’s currently undecided but working towards his degree with an exploratory major. He’s a major procrastinator and spends most of his free time watching YouTube videos. He enjoys conspiracy theories and has started to dip into some ASMR. He’s in the process of starting a podcast.
Patton Rogers: Freshman. 19 years old. He’s a child psychology major with a minor in chemistry because “he likes to mix stuff.” In his free time, Patton likes to bake treats for various clubs and organizations on campus. He also helps a certain sassy sophomore named Remy Stewarts at their coffee startup.
Dee Jones: Junior. 20 years old. He’s majoring in pre-law with a minor in sociology. Dee is the Resident Assistant (RA) for the dorm that the other five all live in. In his free time, Dee is the DM for a campus DnD club. He also likes to visit the small animal center in the veterinary school and feed the snakes.
Remus Prince: Freshman. 18 years old. He’s an english major with a specialization in creative writing. In his free time, Remus likes to prank his brother Roman and his friends. Remus also has a YouTube channel where he specializes in “childhood ruining” facts.
Okay now let’s get to the headcanons!
-Roman, Virgil, Logan, and Patton all live in the same suite-style dorm room. This means they have a common area, bathroom, and two bedroom areas. Roman and Logan are in one room and Patton and Virgil are in the other.
-Remus lives in another dorm room with Remy and two other students. Their room is across the hall from the other four which makes it a prime spot for scouting out pranking information.
-On moving day, Patton was the first to arrive. He made plushies for his three other roommates based on things they said they enjoy on their roommate profiles. He also figured that they might be a source of comfort when the others inevitably started to miss home. Roman got a red dragon wearing a little golden crown. Logan got a robot wearing a labcoat with NASA patches on it. Virgil got a blackbear wearing a purple-patched hoodie.
-When Virgil moved in and saw all of Patton’s pastel pillows and rainbow potted houseplants, he took one look at the MCR poster in his hands and wondered if this was going to work out. However, when Patton came in and saw that they both had fairy lights to hang, they became fast friends while helping each other set them up. Patton actually laughed at Virgil’s edgy humor while Virgil seemed to enjoy Patton’s puns.
-Roman brought about 5 Costco-sized packs of ramen noodles with him and his own personal coffee maker. Remus was behind him threatening to drop his video camera out the nearest window. Roman simply rolled his eyes and moved the rest of his stuff in.
-Logan was the last to show up. He brought a big stack of textbooks and an array of extra supplies that his roommates would go on to “borrow” from for the next four years. Meeting Roman was pretty anticlimactic.
Logan: Is that Shakespeare on your desk?
Roman: *Looking up from doing his makeup in a lightbulb mirror* Yes.
Logan: Cool.
-Things didn’t stay that chill for too long though. Roman and Logan frequently got into arguments about everything.
Logan: Roman for the last time, eating a cup of instant ramen does not automatically make you a more cultured person!
Roman: Okay… but have you tried an egg in it though?
-Patton quickly becomes like the dad of the group. He loves taking care of his friends and it definitely shows. However, they didn’t quite get his parental nature at first.
Patton: Okay kiddo time to get up from your nap and do your homework!
Virgil: Kiddo? Patton you’re like three months older than me.
-However, Virgil and Patton soon started to understand each other more. Virgil knew about Patton’s caring nature and Patton started to learn how badly Virgil procrastinated and got stressed. This led to them coming up with a sort of rules and rewards system. Patton would start saying things like “Okay Virge if we get our math homework done in the next twenty minutes then we can have a cookie and watch YouTube for 30 minutes.”
-Platonic cuddling also proved to be a way to help get rid of Virgil’s anxiety about his future. It was hard to ask him for things like that back home. He was able to trust Patton though so it’s enjoyable for both of them.
-Virgil has trouble sleeping at night after hours of doing homework and trying to get himself to do said homework. Dee was in the hallway one day and heard Virgil telling Logan about this problem while chugging an energy drink. The next day, Virgil had a package waiting on his desk. It was a purple weighted blanket with black spider print on it. Virgil has been sleeping better ever since.
-Logan recognized Roman from YouTube and remembered a few of the technical and research problems that he had with the channel. Logan begins helping Roman with scripting, setup, and editing. People start to notice the quality improvement.
-Roman and Logan went viral when they wrote a song about Crofters jam. Logan’s moms send them jam in care packages. After a late night of studying lines for Roman’s theatre assignment, they ate Crofters straight out of the jar with plastic spoons. Logan started humming a melody and Roman sang along until Virgil banged on the wall as a request for them to shut up. They wrote down lyrics until 4 in the morning. They recorded the video the next night and it got over 1 million views.
-After the Crofters collab, Logan started to appear more on Roman’s channel. He soon became almost a weekly regular.
-Patton invited Remus and Virgil to his new coffee startup to try some of the drinks in order to name them. Remus had some… creative suggestions (some involving horrid ways to use milk), which Remy and Patton immediately shot down. Virgil’s best idea was “Strawberry Survival” for an energy drink with a sugared berry taste and energy boost.
-Dee was able to recruit Roman, Remus, Virgil, and Logan to his DnD club. This is how the club meetings usually go. Roman wants to roll to marry every character. Remus rolls to seduce every living and nonliving element of the game. He then rolls to kill every living and nonliving element of the game. Virgil just thinks of more and more creative ways to try and eliminate his own character. Logan is just whining the whole time that nobody is playing correctly. Dee just tiredly says, “Roman you cannot kiss the villain. Remus you cannot fuck the rock. Virgil that cat cannot rip your heart out. And Logan, here’s $10. Go get me a coffee and chill out. I cannot wait until I’m 21 and can block out you little shits with straight vodka.” Though he’s exasperated, Dee really enjoys the meetings. He just won’t tell the truth.
-Virgil starts his podcast halfway through the year. People immediately love his sarcastic, yet calming, voice. He does a mixture of things on his show. Sometimes he just talks about calm things with Patton while they bake in the school kitchens. Sometimes he broadcasts the DnD sessions. By far his most popular is the segment “Dumb Debates” that he does with Logan where people send in meme questions and they each pick a side and argue about it. A chair might’ve been thrown during “Is water wet?”
-Roman and Logan solve every argument with a rap battle. They sometimes vlog it for Youtube. Four way arguments are solved through a Mario Kart tournament. Everyone always tries to get too technical with the best tricks except for Patton who almost always wins.
Those are basically it for now! Comments and likes are appreciated. Let me know if you want more headcanons or would like to see a fic out of any of these situations. Take care everyone and I’ll be back with more soon!

Is Confederate Memorial Day a thing?
COMMENTARY:
Yes.
Southerners I consider Patriots include those who took orders from Robert E. Lee during the war and followed his example religously, after the war, in terms of citizenship and patriotism as it is defined by Socrates and Romans 13:1 - 7. They are all dead, now, but they continue to be represented in the US military and as Civil War Re-enactors with uniforms from both armies in his/her costume department.
The South took a stupid bet but the soldiers who underwrote it acted with republican virtue and unsurpassed valor. The theory they defended turned out to be not just fallacy but deliberately fraudulent, like the Big Lie. Slavery was the Big Lie that depended upon a heretical understanding of the Torah in the light of Resurrection.
But the Southern comrades-in-arms were as American as their Union opponents and those who took orders from Grant during the battle and endorsed his example of mercy in the terms and spirit of the surrender. And they would celebrate their common patriotism without much ceremony, except at occassions like the 50th Anniversy of Gettysburg at Gettysburg, The Colored Troops of the Union were something of the step-children of Memorial Day until Colin Powell got that Buffaloo Soldiers memorial put up.
And, of course, the US Army was a Southern instiution when I was growing up: consider the barracks culture of From Here to Eternity. I mean, can you name a WWII Navy war movier where a white Southern drawl doesn’t present itself as comic relief even when it’s Patton. Or adult leadership when it’s a Marine DI of African pursuasion, as genteel white ladies would say.
The people who are Confederate stolen valor are the white supremacists who employ St. Adrew’s Cross as an instrument of domestic terrorism, to wit:
Tumblr media
This is an American Jihadist. PBS had a segment about Jarole of ISIS last night and all Jihadis are in it for the money and the power, just like Texas Republicans. This is empirical evidence of the GOP Shadow Agenda aka Deep State. You can trace this guy back to Newt Gingrich, Steve Bannon, Roger Stone and Donald T. Regan in terms of cash flows and Citizens United. It’s a Free Market Mercenary agenda to implement the insurgent agenda of the Powell Memo. This guy wants to be able to ride around in a pick-up truck with 7 or 8 other open carry ammosexuals with a huge Confederate battle flag and/or Trump banner streaming from their mounts behind the driver and shotgun enforcing the NRA version of the 2nd Amendment and Oath Keepers version of SS mythology.
They talk Memorial Day patriotism sitting on the john, but they are in it for the money and mayhem.
In terms of Memorial Day for the republican patriot, Robert E. Lee defines George Washington relative to Socrates and Romans 13:1 - 7.
Plato’s “Republic” is based on the sociology of Sparta. Socrates was a big fan of Sparta for reasons that elude me, except that he was a combat veteran and that experience soured him on democracy. I don’t know if Plato was influenced by the Roman Republic in his portrait, but the example of Rome becoming a functional empire doesn’t seem to be understood by Plato. He seems to misunderstand the Philosopher King as the natural Emperor role, but the Roman emperor was an executive function for the bureaucratic structures that emerged from the secular rule of law. The actual Roman Philosopher King in the Roman commonwealth is SPQR: the Senate and the People of Rome and the Emperor represented a Servant Leader function like our federal government.
In our constitutional form of government, We, the People, are the Philospher Kings and represent an organic Athenian democracy inclusive of everyone within our boarders. We, the People, hire the emperor role to run the bureacracy of the Republic, aka, the federal government. Congress has a Ways and Means relationship to the republican servant leaders and, are themselves, Servant Leaders who are hired by We, the People, to get the biggest bang for the tax payers buck practical. Neither Plato’s Republic nor the Roman Republic have these mechanism, which originated with John Knox Book of Discipline and conveyed by Federalist 10.
It all has to do with Romans 13:1 - 7 and how the American Jihanist are in violation of that core principle of which guarantees our freedoms and liberties free of charge and a human right.
I’m an Army brat and I have absolutely no problem honoring the Confederat Soldier on Memorial Day and, as a combat veteran, I can extend that sentiment to foreign soldiers, such as the NVA I faced in Vietnam.
The Proud Boys and Oath Keepers don’t fall into that catagory. They acted like they were Soviet soldiers hanging a flag from the Reischtag. That’s exactly what Robert E. Lee asked his veterans not to do, but to renew their relationship as citizens and patriots with the US Constituion and to serve it as dutifully as they had him.
The fighting spirit of the Confederate Soldier went ashore on Omaha Beach with the 29th Infantry. That’s why there is a Memorial Day for Confederat Soldiers.

Bloodshed AU
Chapter 5
Warnings: Nudity, Gore, Language, Violence Summary: Steve Rogers works in a research and tech company in New York. He’s been digging into myths and footage on a creature known as the werewolf. Vicious as they are, he hunts them. With a lot of failures, his team thinks he’s crazy. He may prove them wrong.
Prologue Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8
Characters (Bloodshed Seven)
Tumblr media
The day had grown cold as the ice slowly melted during the day. They were sure by tomorrow the snow will wet the ground and Y/N could hang by the coastline with Bucky.
They may not swing that day, but she would love to watch the ocean wash up on the shore and retreat back to the dark sea.
She followed Bucky through the snow, shifted into their wolf forms as they scouted the area. Freely to roam the area after the hunting season had ended, they hoped no one was out here tonight.
Someone did.
Took a step onto the trail he once came through with a woman. Steve had his backpack on his back while his truck was parked in the side of the road. He hoped those people who lived down the trail won’t find his truck and call the police, invading their property. He walked down the trail—the one his father took him down for the one night.
His heart beat against his rib cage like thunder in his ears. His breathing was getting difficult to keep at a steady pace.
Flashlight in hand, it barely shined light to the outer woods. He kept it on the trail and that was all he could see.
The fear of turning around made him tense up. This fear always got to him. He would’ve wished he woke up in that bed in the motel. This all as a nightmare but he felt the cold. He felt the metal flashlight in his hand.
He could see his breath appear in front of him. His long hair covered his ears but he still felt the cold bite at them. He needed to find that spot or at least a sign of those Godly beasts.
He did bring a weapon. A hunter’s knife and a gun.
Even at the slightest sound, he’d reach for one of them. He kept moving. Maybe a mile down, he found a familiar spot. He could hear his father’s stories in that exact spot.
Those howling behind him when he was a kid. He looks around and turns to where he did hear the howling for the first time. The direction he heard it was actually where that family’s house was. Somewhere in the North, he heard that howling with his father and that led to the family’s house.
That house looked new to him. He would’ve saw it as a kid when they returned back home up the trail. They must’ve been new. Steve wondered if the family heard about the werewolf stories. Things that rotten in the snow and dirt. Those hunters, too.
No one found them yet.
Steve gasps and whips around when a howl was heard. It lasted for a good long 10 seconds before ending. He gripped on the flashlight. Of course, normal wolves roam the area and he knew some could play tricks and just make him go crazy.
Wolves were bigger than domestic dogs, but werewolves are larger than wolves. Their paws were almost the size of a bear’s paw, regular wild dogs were the size of your palm almost.
Steve heard the howl after the other. He knew those were close. His turned off his flashlight and he was drowned in the darkness. The only light source was the cold moon.
He started to run. He felt chills. His heart beat against his rib cage again and the dread began to raise every second. He was reliving the dream— but he wasn’t running away from a werewolf.
He was running towards one.
If he got closer, he’d have to lay low. He grabbed the knife from his pocket and ran. He met the edge of the hill. Immediately, he slid down on his hip. Meeting the bottom of it, swiftly he stands up and continues to run.
He stopped.
Something made him stop. He looked around. Silence. The forest was awfully silent. His breath came out as large huffs as he looks around almost in fear but desperation.
Tumblr media
Y/N rushed through the woods and came to a stop. Shaking off her snow mane, she looks around. The howl rumbled through her throat as she released the long howl into the night.
It lasted for a good long 10 seconds before she lowered her head. They were patrolling tonight. Making sure no hunters were around. She heard a howl from her right.
Bucky.
He howled out as a clear over in the South. The next one to her left.
Ada.
Y/N went to head back to the cabin once she let out a short howl till something picked her scent. The smell triggered the feral inside again. With a harsh snarl, her eyes glow bright blue as she chased after the scent and ruffled the snow.
Steve continued to look around. His chest heaving up and down as he stood in the snow. Trees surrounding him. Shit. His heart began to hit against his chest again. The tightness in his chest began to make him choke on the air.
His eyes began to feel blurry.
Breath.
The fear of being in the forest alone without no sign of people. He needed to head back. He turns. Whipping around every second to the smallest sounds. His hand shook, fingers barely holding onto the blade in his hand.
He started to not think straight. Thinking there were snarls around him. Either behind or deeper in the forest.
Y/N stopped and felt their presence just over the hill. Her cold blue moon eyes watch the shadow of a man. She couldn’t be caught. Not from what happened last time. The smell made her want to sneeze, snarl but she held it in.
The man turns, she was unable to see the man’s face when she ducks into the brush.
“Who’s there?” The man called, her ears turned to the sound of his voice. Demanding for her to come out. She would. The sound of a long howl made her turn. The man did as well.
Steve panicked towards the long howl. He jumped when something moves in front of him and the sounds of it scattered away. What the hell was that?
He walked over to the sound with the blade in hand. He reached for the gun and also held it in his hand. He whipped around the brush and saw the snow pushed down by some weight.
He knelt down, making sure to look both ways. He found the trail. Something was watching him. He realized the movements of it, is that it turned away and ran off.
Just after the howl. Steve lifted his head up and saw the blue moon stare down at him. He needed to be back at the motel before someone finds him and arrests him from trespassing basically a crime scene.
The Volk Forest park had been closed down because of it. Who knew if Sheriff’s were in the area. He stood up and pulled his phone out. No service whatsoever, but he took photos. Using the flash, he got what he can gather and headed back to the trail.
Going back to his car.
.
Y/N rushed towards the sound of Roman’s howl and she jumped down to be on the side of the mountain. Jumping over the rocks and catching a few slips on the way. She hears yipping. All five wolves together and she jumped down, Bucky looks over and she rubs her head against his as a hi and ruffled her mane, looking at Roman.
His eyes were the usual burgundy red. If angered, bright red. None of them liked him angry in this form. He snorted at the pack, “Anything near the creek?”
Y/N looks up. She was the one by the creek. Whoever that man was, she didn’t want to tell them that someone was in the woods. Her blue eyes gleamed up at him, “Nothing.”
Roman looks up and snuffles, “Ada and I will head back. Around dawn, if you’re still out here, return back.” Ada and Roman low growled at each other before they jumped off the rocks and ran into the woods.
Tatum yips in a playful way as he pounces on Randall. The brown wolf growls and drops Tatum to the ground. Bucky looks at Y/N and snuffles at her, “Let’s go.”
Y/N and Bucky scattered off into the woods to go on a late night run and possibly a hunt.
“I’m craving moose,” Bucky says, running beside her. Y/N low growls, jumping over Bucky, “Unless you want a antler to the skull, be my guest.” The small snap of a twig, Y/N comes to a stop and so does Bucky. They both kneel and look over the hill.
Spotting a lone deer in the open. Y/N looks over to Bucky, his tongue swiping over his muzzle and she noticed his eyes go feral to the smell of the deer. Y/N’s flews lift up to show her pearly white razor sharp teeth as a low growl erupted from her throat and they leaped towards their dinner.
.
Steve jerks from his bed, inhaling sharply as he does. His skin layered in beads of sweat, he tried to calm his fast heartbeat and he turns to his phone on the nightstand.
His phone beamed with the time and his background the same since he got it. It was around 5 in the morning. He needed to go out. Maybe grab breakfast somewhere.
Getting up, he took a cold shower. Relaxing his muscles under the water, he closes his eyes. The growling echoing in his ears. He flinched when he felt the familiar pinch in his forearm and he opens his eyes to look at his arm.
Nothing.
That nightmare. That same red wolf chasing him in the forest. He remembered it biting into his forearm and the feeling of it being ripped out, his eyes still looking down at his own flesh being mauled by the beast.
Steve didn’t want to think of it any longer and turned off the shower.
He got dressed in a blue tee and a dirtied flannel, jeans and boots thrown on. He wanted to talk to someone who knew this town. So much of it changed but it was familiar places when he was young.
Steve took a step into the lobby, hearing the man at the desk mutter things behind the counter.
Steve knew this man was some psycho. He guessed maybe that girl was one, too. He leans on the counter, “Excuse me?” He says. The man continued to mutter things as he turns to the back.
Steve looked over to the wall and his face drops. Photos of wolves, men holding up hounds that were twice their size. Also there was a picture of the World War II. Pictures of men mauled in the forest. Steve never turned his head, but his eyes looked over to the old man who continued to mutter.
“Excuse me,” Steve says more louder. “Huh?” Erik jumps and turns around, he spots Steve, “Ah, sorry. I was just-uh...” Steve points at the photos on his walls.
“Big fan of the forest?” Steve asked. Erik squints at the photos, he nods, “Oh, yes. The Volk forest is one of the biggest forests in Oregon. Some say it’s like the Aokigahara Forest, the forest in Japan?”
Steve’s arm was on the counter as he leaned against the wall, listening, Erik turns to him, “You know, the ‘Suicide Forest’? Thought it’s not a sea of trees. Volk is a Russian word for Wolves.”
Steve was interested in his story. Has he seen one? Steve points again, “Have you seen... you know... werewolves?”
Erik grins, “I’m sure hunters have, yes. Me? No, I believe in them. I’ve been researching for years. Years and years of research till someone came to our lab and they took all of it. Some police or Men in Black! We never gotten names from them. Said what we were doing was very unlikely and not appropriate. Bastards,” He mutters.
Steve nods. Erik shakes his head, “That Rogers guy was closer than anyone else. Until he was mauled. Or murdered, you know what I mean, kid?” He says, turning away. Steve stood there feeling a bit unease.
He tried to shake it off, “Is there any diner around here?” Erik grunts when he lifts up something in the back. He comes over to the desk again, “Yeah, of course, one of the best diner’s in town! Just take that street down there and you’ll see it!” He says.
Steve turns to the direction he pointed and nods, “Thank you.” After that, Steve went to his truck. Driving over there, he parks his car on the sidewalk. Stepping out of his truck, he glances down the street and then over to the small alleyway beside the diner.
He saw a familiar ride. Two Harley-Davidson’s motorbikes were parked on the side. One with a wolf sticker and a long scratch mark of a wolf’s claw. He didn’t pay much in mind about those stickers and headed inside.
The diner was half full, greeted by a blonde woman in a apron below her waist as she smiles up at him. “Hello, welcome to Bobby’s Diner, what would you like?”
“Just a coffee, thank you,” He slides her a 10, “Keep it.” The woman gives him a smile as she slips the 10 into her pocket, “On it,” She winks. Steve gives her a small grin as she walks off to grab him a coffee.
“Shut up, come on let’s get out of here,” A woman spoke, Steve turns to see the couple walk over and he recognizes them quickly. “Hey,” Y/N says, Steve seem to feel relieved to see her again. He didn’t know why.
“Didn’t think to see you so quickly,” He jokes, Y/N grins. “Well, it’s Bucky and I’s favorite diner. The coffee here’s great,” She says. Steve looks up to see Bucky stand directly behind her like a guarded dog. If he were one, he’d start growling.
Steve shrugged the thought off, “I hope, I just came here to grab one,” He says. Y/N smiles, “Well, if you want... Bucky and I were heading to the coast, go near the ocean and watch it. If you want.”
Steve thought about it. He barely knew them. He knew the answer when Bucky was never removing the death eyes away from him. Steve shook his head no, “No, it’s okay. You two go, I actually need to visit someone today so...”
Y/N nods, “Oh. Okay, well...” She glances at Bucky, “We’ll head out then.” Steve smiled at her and once she winked at him in a goodbye, his smile dropped.
The hint of blue gleamed in her eye as she walked off. It was visible in the dim lighting in the diner as if someone shined headlights on those retro reflectors on the roads.
There was barely any light. And she never had eyes close to being that kind of color. He watched them head out to their motorbikes, laughing as they did. Y/N was the first to ride off. Steve watched as Bucky looks into the diner to glare at Steve.
Then he road off after Y/N.
“Sir?” The woman spoke, Steve turns and sees her hand him his coffee, “Thank you.” She nods and walks off, leaving Steve there to ponder what just happened.
.
“Bucky! Stop!” Y/N shouts, Bucky had his hands on her waist as he jokingly lifts her up to hover over the waves. He laughs and places her back on her feet, “I’m kidding,” He says. She shoves him back as they walked along the coastline. Trees and rocks in the distance.
Bucky points, “You see that cliff?” Y/N looks over to see the huge cliff with a peak that is a hundred foot drop into the ocean, he grins, “That cliff points directly at Japan. Some call it Whales Peak.”
“Why Whales Peak?” She chuckles. Bucky turns to her, “Cause if you follow where the peak is pointing, you’d see whales pass by. And one actually got washed up here. Took them a while to put it back in the ocean.”
Y/N quirks up her brows, “Wow, Mr. Smart guy. Didn’t take you as the nerd one in the pack.” Bucky shrugs, “It’s all about Google.”
Y/N laughs and bumps her shoulder into Bucky causing him to laugh as well. The two threw rocks in the ocean, chased each other along the shoreline. The sun was setting on the ocean. Bucky stood beside Y/N and watched her look at the ocean.
Seeing her eyes reflect the sun’s shine. Her gentle smile as her hair flew in the salty wind. He grins.
Tumblr media
Steve stared at his hands, looking up to her with the soft eyes. “You should be proud of yourself, Sarah.” His mother glances over to where his eyes landed, seeing the photos of her and his old man.
One with Steve and his father going out fishing. Sarah turns, “I’ve had the best life I could ever imagine, son. But my only regret is that you didn’t have that much from your father and I.”
Steve turns away from the photos and stares at his hands. “What is it, dear?” She grumbles. Steve looks up to her, “For the longest I can remember is that I just wanted to do what was right,” He says, “Guess I’m not quite sure what that is anymore. I thought I could throw myself back in... follow orders, serve... it’s just not the same anymore.”
Sarah takes his hand, “You and your father are always so dramatic,” She chuckles. Steve grins at her. “And I understand, son. From where you are now... I’ve gotten calls from your friend Natasha. She told me how many missions you’ve all done and saved millions of people. You’re making a big difference.”
Steve grips her hand gently in his, “I just wish I could go back,” He whispers. Sarah gently smiles at him, “I know, Steve... But all we can do is to start over.” She placed his and her hand on her stomach, “Your father is proud of who you’ve become. You’re a good man. Though this world is filled with unexpected things. And your father with his... folktales that scared us half to death.”
Steve and her both laugh at that.
Sarah hums softly, “From what I heard on how you got here, you must be desperate for something. And it wasn’t me,” She says. Steve sighs softly. His mother knew how to find the lies behind the eyes. He lowered his head.
“Was I the reason you came here, Steve?” She asked. Steve lifts up his head, she shook her head, “No point in lying if I already caught you. I can see it in your eyes.”
There was no point now. She was right. If Natasha found out about why he actually came here, she’d drag him by the ears and hair to rip him back to New York.
Steve pierces his lips together and looked down to her hands on his, “I just need the truth to come out,” He says, Sarah shuffles her head to fully look at him as she laid on the hospital bed. “I have to find answers on what happened to dad and kill these-”
“Steve,” She gently pulls his hand closer, “These things aren’t true. These beasts... they don’t exist. I don’t want to lose you because of these stories,” She says.
“You’ll be humiliated,” She says.
“Our family was already humiliated from the very beginning, mom. Do you remember how many people surrounded our house? Calling us wackos? You’ve seen Joseph, he was mauled by an animal-”
“Steve, please... I know,” She says, “I just want you to be careful. We’re not sure who those people who did that. People who thought he was a freak and they killed him for it.” He shook his head, closing his eyes, “I know. I know,” He says.
Sarah frowns, “I don’t want to you lose you. And I want you to understand that. Okay?” Steve lifts up his head and softly nods. He watched as she stared at him with the soft but sad smile.
His tilts his head, “What?”
Sarah lifts up her hand and places it on his cheek, “You look like your father. You have his eyes. His hair.” Steve smiles sadly and placed his hand over hers on his cheek.
“I love you.”
“I love you, too.”

I needed some mother and son bond in this chapter. Some Captain America: The Winter Soldier lines and a one from Defending Jacob. “You have his eyes.” I just love those movies and I love this story.

Ten Interesting Egyptian Novels
1. Palace Walk
“ we of course had to include a novel by Naguib Mahfouz, an Egyptian legend and a Nobel Laureate in Literature. Palace Walk is the first novel in Mahfouz’s Cairo Trilogy, all translated from Arabic (Palace Walk’s real title is Bein El Qasrein, which translates to ‘between the two palaces’). Palace Walk is an inside look at a middle class Egyptian family during British-occupied Egypt in WWI, and the dynamics and cultural complexities between them.”-Naguib Mahfouz (localguidetoegypt.com)
2. Death on the Nile
“Yup, the world-famous detective novels of Agatha Christie starring Hercule Poirot have their own nod to Egypt in Death on the Nile. Agatha Christie herself stayed at the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan while writing the novel, which is a mystery aboard a period steamer on the Nile.”- Agatha Christie (localguidetoegypt.com)
3.The Golden Goblet
“This book is touted as a children’s or young adult book, but trust us when we say it’s just as enjoyable for adults. The story revolves around Ranofer, a young orphan boy who tries to rise above his unfortunate circumstances to pursue his simple dream of becoming a goldsmith’s apprentice and leaving his abusive half-brother forever. He accidentally stumbles across one of the worst crimes one can commit in Ancient Egypt, and it’s up to him to do the right thing even if it costs him everything”-Eloise Jarvis McGraw (localguidetoegypt.com)
4.Cleopatra's Daughter
“At the dawn of the Roman Empire, when tyranny ruled, a daughter of Egypt and a son of Rome found each other...Selene's legendary parents are gone. Her country taken, she has been brought to the city of Rome in chains, with only her twin brother, Alexander, to remind her of home and all she once had. Living under the watchful eyes of the ruling family, Selene and her brother must quickly learn how to be Roman – and how to be useful to Caesar. She puts her artistry to work, in the hope of staying alive and being allowed to return to Egypt.”- Michelle Moran (goodreads)
5. Tales of Ancient Egypt (Puffin Classics)
“These stories include the great myths - of Amen-Ra, who created all the creatures in the world; of Isis, seaching the waters for her dead husband Osiris; of the Bennu Bird and the Book of Thoth. But there are also tales told for pleasure about magic, treasure and adventure - even the first ever Cinderella story.”-Roger Green (amazon)
6. River God
“The first book in the epic Egyptian series. 'Fame and popularity breed envy in high places, and the adulation of the mob is fickle. they often take as much pleasure in tearing down the idols that they have grown tired of, as they did in elevating them in the first place. It is safer by far to live unseen and unremarked, as I always attempt to do' An ancient kingdom. An incredible destiny. Taita is a humble sale; an expert in art, poetry, medicine, and engineering, as well as keeping important secrets, he is the most treasure possession of Lord Intef. Yet when Intef's beautiful daughter Lostris is married to the Pharaoh, Taita is commanded to follow her, and swiftly finds himself deeper than he ever could have imagined in a world of deception and treachery. But outside the palace, the great kingdom of Egypt is divided, and in even greater danger. Enemies threaten on all sides, and only Taita holds the power to save them all...”-Wilbur Smith (barnes&nobles)
7. Desert God
“Game of Thrones meets Ancient Egypt in this magnificent, action-packed epic. On the gleaming banks of the Nile, the brilliant Taita—slave and advisor to the Pharaoh—finds himself at the center of a vortex of passion, intrigue, and danger. His quest to destroy the Hyksos army and form an alliance with Crete takes him on an epic journey up the Nile, through Arabia and the magical city of Babylon, and across the open seas. With the future of Egypt itself on his shoulders, Taita enters a world where the line between loyalty and betrayal shifts like the desert sands, evil enemies await in the shadows, and death lingers on the edges of darkness.”-Wilbur Smith (barnes&nobles)
8.Death of an Eye
“Alexandria, 47BCE: Cleopatra shares the throne with her brother Ptolemy under the auspices of Julius Caesar, by whom Cleopatra is heavily pregnant with child. A shipment of new coin meant to reset the shaky Egyptian economy has been stolen, the Queen's Eye has been murdered and Queen Cleopatra turns to childhood friend Tetisheri to find the missing shipment and bring the murderer to justice.”-Dana Stabenow (barnes&nobles)
9.Child of the Morning
“Thirty-five centuries ago the sun had a daughter: Hatshepsut. Youngest daughter of the Pharaoh, she was a lithe and magical child. But when her older sister died, it became her duty to purify the dynasty’s bloodline. She was to wed Thothmes, her father’s illegitimate son, who was heir to the throne. But fearing his son’s incompetence, Hatshepsut’s father came to her with startling news. She was to be Pharaoh, ruler of the greatest empire the world had ever known—provided, of course, that the unprecedented ascension by a woman did not inspire the priests to treason or instill in her half-brother and future consort sufficient hatred to have her put to death. This is the premise for Child of the Morning, based closely on the historical facts. Hatshepsut assumed the throne at the age of fifteen and ruled brilliantly for more than two decades. Her achievements were immortalized on the walls of her magnificent temple at Deir el-Bahri, built by her architect and lover, Senmut.”-: A Novelby Pauline Gedge, Michelle Moran (barnes&nobles)
10. The Queen's Handmaid
“The year is 39 BC. All of Alexandria awaits the arrival of Herod, the Galilean governor with his eye on the Judean kingship. The handmaid of Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, receives a troubling visit from her aging mentor. An orphan since birth, Lydia lives in the palace at the demand of Cleopatra and her royal child, the son of Julius Caesar. But Lydia has a growing problem on her hands: her beauty is becoming a liability to the aging queen, and the visiting Herod’s undisguised interest only makes matters worse. When Lydia’s mentor is murdered, the handmaid inherits a daunting task. An ancient set of sealed scrolls”-by Tracy Higley (barnes&nobles)

One Week Later
Patton's living room, 6 pm
"Logan, is there anything you wanted to tell me?" Patton's voice seemed sweet as usual, but Logan knew his sibling too well to miss the icy undertone.
"Nothing comes to mind. Is there something you'd like to hear?" Logan tried to keep his voice even, but the twitch of Patton's mouth made it clear that he had failed.
"What have you been up to lately? I realized that between putting in more hours at the shop and spending so much time with Virgil, we haven't really talked in the last week or so."
"Nothing remarkable. As you know, it is winter break, so I have been catching up on grading. I truly do not understand why some of these students think that what they turned in is remotely acceptable. Especially for this lab, which is worth 10% of their final grade. Do they not care about their education at all?"
"Now, Logan, I'm sure they're trying their best. You don't know what's going on in their lives outside of class, and you should know better than most how outside circumstances can affect someone's work. Is that it, then? Just grading?"
"For the most part. I read The Murder of Roger Ackroyd again, which was as pleasant as always."
Patton sighed, and the smile dropped off their face. "You, dear brother, are a terrible liar. Why did you borrow my car without asking while I was at work yesterday?"
Logan sputtered. "I- I did not- how did you know?"
"I'm not an idiot, Logan, and I'm more observant than you seem to think. Did you really think I wouldn't notice the fact that the odometer went up?"
"It was less than three miles round trip."
"Logan, my car is 63 years old. Every single mile matters. If you paid enough attention to the things I tell you that aren't about killing people, you would have known that. Virgil drove me to and from work; I would have said yes if you'd asked. So what could you possibly need to do within a 1.5 mile radius that required my car without my knowledge?"
Logan took a deep breath and steeled himself for the impending argument. "I required the use of your car to dispose of a body."
Patton's face flashed with anger and betrayal before returning to a neutral, calm expression. "I'll start with the easy question- why couldn't you use your car? Apparently you did all the rest by yourself, and your car is bigger than mine."
"There is a near-infinitesimal chance that someone might have seen him get into my car. The chance is almost indescribably small, but it does exist."
"How long ago?" Patton's voice was cold and harsh as they got off the couch and stood in front of Logan, the light casting a shadow that made them look like a dark angel.
Logan hesitated; he'd never seen them this angry before. "One week ago. I lack your talent for keeping them alive for long."
"One week… my date with Virgil." They scoffed. "And you say you don't feel emotions. Who, pray tell, did you target in your little temper tantrum?"
"It certainly was not an emotional breakdown. You pursued your desires independent of us when you went to the museum with Virgil. I pursued mine in punishing Jason Dean."
"Jason Dean… JD. Logan. Tell me that you did not kidnap, torture, and murder your own student. Was he even 18 yet? What could a CHILD possibly have done to deserve whatever you did to him? I assume it was some of the things I told you even the scum we punished deserved. Liquid nitrogen? Fire? Hydrochloric acid?" Logan flinched at each accusation, but he stood up, closing the height difference and looking Patton in the eyes.
"He was a murderer. He was responsible for the murders of three of his peers. He deserved punishment, and I deserved freedom with my experiments."
"Do you think I'm stupid?" Logan was taken aback by the sudden softness in Patton's voice.
"Of course not, Patton. In your own way, you are brilliant. I have told you this before."
"Don't patronize me. Is there anything else you left out? This is your one chance to get everything out in the open without consequences. I will know if you're lying, and you will regret it if you do."
"I… yes." Logan sighed, knowing full well that they would not hesitate to follow through on their threat. "I sent something to Roman Prince, the journalist who has been covering our kills."
"What, pray tell, did you send?" Logan could tell that their patience was about to snap, but he would not submit. Not this time.
"A note. A cipher. A challenge."
"Oh my god. You're looking for your Poirot, aren't you? I'm not enough? We aren't enough?"
"Patton, you are being absurd. Judging by his writing, this reporter will not be up for the challenge, but perhaps someone else out there can begin to compete with me intellectually, and it would be a welcome change of pace. Regardless, nothing will ever come between us. I fail to see how my search for a worthy intellectual opponent is any different from your burgeoning romance with this Virgil you are always going on about. It is hypocritical in the extreme to seek to satisfy your needs that cannot be fulfilled by our partnership while maintaining that I cannot. I deserve better than that, after all I did for you."
"There's a difference between going out on a few dates and putting us in danger and risking everything trying to prove that you're so much smarter than everyone else. You were reckless and stupid, and I'm disappointed in you. I don't know if we can keep going, if you're going to keep acting like this."
"Surely, you do not mean that. Our work means too much to you. People are only beginning to hear our message. That is truly why I sent that note to the reporter; so he can spread our word even further."
"I told you to stop fucking lying to me!" Patton shouted, raising a hand. Logan flinched, and Patton blanched, realizing what they had been about to do. "You should leave, Logan. I can't even look at you right now. Don't make me act like him." It was clear from their tone that it wasn't a request. Without another word, Logan pushed past them and walked out the door.
Golden Gate Park, 4 pm
Virgil walked onto the crime scene, shocked by the lack of reporters. He was greeted by Captain Sanders, further confusing him.
"Hello, Captain. With all due respect, why are you here? And I'm not complaining by any stretch, but where are all the press vultures?"
"Ah, hello, Virgil! They aren't here because no one knows about the body but the two of us. I found it myself, and called you and Vincent directly. No one but the three of us knows."
"Vincent's here?"
"'Ello, Virgil!" Came an energetic British voice from behind him. Virgil couldn't help but smile.
"Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to see you, but what are you doing here?" Virgil let himself be pulled into a hug from the shorter man.
"I have crime scene tech training, and Captain Sanders needed someone he'd be sure wouldn't call the press. And given my history with journalism, well, I know that I talk a lot, but never to the press."
"Remind me to ask for that story later. How long has the body been here?"
"Judging by insect activity, I'd wager about twenty-four hours, but I'll send photos and samples to our entomologist for confirmation once we're done here. Did you know that the first documented case of forensic entomology was in 13th century China, documented in Sun Tzu's book about his work, entitled The Washing Away of Wrongs? He recounted finding a murder victim by noticing the flies that remained on the murder weapon, despite it being cleaned of all blood."
"That is super fascinating, Vincent, but we've got a 2019 crime right here to solve. Do we know anything about the victim?" Virgil asked, putting on gloves.
"The only thing on him was a Mission High School ID- name's Jason Dean, he's a senior." Vincent handed him the ID.
"A kid? That's a huge change in victimology. Have you checked his mouth?"
"Not yet. Just got here a couple minutes before you did. Care to do the honors?"
Virgil sighed. "Not sure how much of an honor it is, but sure." Vincent led him to the body, and he started dictating notes.
"Victim is Jason Dean, per his Mission High School student ID. Whereas previous victims had knife wounds, the victim appears to have extremely severe frostbite, acid burns, and heat burns. No obvious cause of death, although shock seems to be a reasonable option. Opening his mouth now, and there is a paper inside. Same stamp as previous victims- this certainly is our killer. The note says 'killer'. Is the victim a substitute for himself? The profile suggests someone in their late twenties or early thirties. Perhaps something about Jason reminds the killer of himself as a teen. He shows no sign of stopping soon, though. Why kill a proxy now? Revisit profile after autopsy and gathering more information about Jason."
"Interesting analysis, Virgil." Virgil jumped, not having heard the captain walk up behind him. Captain Sanders laughed. "Easy there, it's just me. It looks like you've got this all under control, so I'm going to go back to the station. This change in MO and victimology is concerning, though- get me a written revised profile by the end of the day."
"Yes, sir." Virgil went back to discussing the details of the injuries with Vincent, and Sanders left the scene.
Presidio Heights, 6 pm
With a sigh, Roman forced a key into the ancient lock on his slot in the mailbox unit. He rifled through them as he trudged up the flight of stairs to his apartment, flipping past coupons, ads, and bills, frustrated at how mundane his life had become. He hadn't realized just how monotonous his routine was until he got the opportunity to write those pieces on the Park Puzzler; now life in between them just felt gray. He knew that having another chance to write about the killer meant someone else would have to die, so he didn't hope for that, but the thrill of a real story left him hungry for more adventure. Which is why his heart stopped when he found an envelope with no address or postage, just his name.
He ran up the rest of the stairs and unlocked his door as quickly as possible, throwing the rest of the mail on his coffee table. The pile let out an irritated meow.
"I'm so sorry, Meeko, my love! But this looks to be quite the mysterious delivery. Can you smell the adventure?" Roman freed his cat from the pile of papers and scratched under his chin. Meeko let out a small chirp, which Roman understood as forgiveness.
Turning back to the envelope, he was truly at a loss for words. The envelope was made out of cardstock, and the only writing on it was his name in big, black letters. He carefully took a picture of it before turning it over and opening it. Inside was a note. Once again, he took a picture of it before calling his boss.
"What is it, Prince? You're off the clock."
"I just got a note that claims to have been sent by the Park Puzzler."
"The serial killer?"
"Yes, sir. The note looks like it's in some kind of code, and it says I should publish it. What should I do?"
"The journalist in me says yes- it's a hell of a story. But this is a very public active case, and I don't want you charged with obstruction of justice. Take pictures of it, and then take it to the cops."
"I already took pictures- consider me on the way to the station now." Roman threw his jacket back on and left for the station.
Richmond Station, 20 Minutes Later
"Detective Mason, it's Roman Prince here to see you."  Virgil looked up from his profile write-up to see a beat cop whose name he couldn't remember nervously shifting his weight from foot to foot.
"Roman Prince… oh. The journalist. Did he say what he wants?"
"Wouldn't give me details- he just said that it has to do with that serial killer case you're working."
Virgil fought to not roll his eyes. "Okay, send him over here."
"Will do." The officer all but ran away, quickly returning with Roman in tow.
"Hello Prince. Rumor has it you have something for me." Virgil said, feigning boredom.
"Not quite. I have something that was delivered to me that might be of interest to you." Virgil's interest was piqued.
"If it's half as important as you seem to think it is, it is evidence, and therefore will be mine shortly."
"Hang on, Surly Temple. Before I show you anything, I need you to promise me exclusive rights to this. It was given to me, out of all the journalists in the city, by the Park Puzzler, after all."
"Don't call him that. Public attention is his goal, and giving him a name like that only validates him. But fine. If this is something important, you will be given SFPD's permission to write about it once we've decided the best course to do so." Maybe I can make this work in our favor. He's so desperate to get a big story, I'm sure we can use him to say what we want, not what the killer does, Virgil mused.
"Fantastic! Here it is. It was in my mailbox when I checked the mail about half an hour ago." Roman handed him the envelope.
"When was the last time you checked your mail?" Virgil asked.
"Yesterday at around 6 o'clock. I check it at about the same time every day."
"Good. Patterns are good," Virgil muttered to himself. He put gloves on before taking the envelope from him. He pulled the piece of paper out of the envelope and read it. "Come with me, Roman. We need to talk to my captain right now." He stood up and started walking; Roman hurried after him.
When they got to the captain's office, Virgil didn't even knock.
"Captain, you need to see this. This journalist says this was left in his mailbox at some point in the last 24 hours." Virgil handed him the note.
Sanders went pale. "What is this?"
"I'm confident it's a cypher of some sort. He's getting desperate, Captain. He hasn't been getting the attention he wants, so he's reaching out to the media directly."
"So why code it?" Roman interjected. "If he wants to use me to send a message, why make it one people won't understand?"
"That's a really good question. What's your name, and who are you writing for?" Sanders asked.
"Roman Prince with SFGate."
"Ah, Humphrey's crew. Well, Virgil? Why is it coded?"
"He doesn't just want attention. He's telling us that he's smarter than we are- publishing this code is a challenge for someone to decode it. Not unlike the Zodiac killer."
"So what do you suggest we do about it? I'm not inclined to do what he wants us to."
"If we don't give him some attention, he will escalate, and with the combination of his recent change of MO and victimology and reaching out to Roman directly, I don't want to know what his next escalation would be if we just ignore it."
"So you're going to let me publish it?" Virgil fought to not roll his eyes at Roman's excitement.
"Not yet. Give me 24 hours to crack it. I already have a couple of ideas. If we can prove that I'm smarter than he is, he will reach out to me, and we can use that connection to catch him. He's almost as smart as he is arrogant, and that's the rope he's going to hang himself on." Virgil made eye contact with the Captain, almost pleading.
"Ooh, I like that phrase. I'm totally going to use that." Roman broke the tense silence that had fallen.
"Okay, Virgil. Roman, meet us both here at 7 pm tomorrow. We'll regroup from there. Virgil, godspeed." He handed Virgil the note.
"Thank you sir. Roman, you can see yourself out, right? I have to get to work."
The two young men left the office, heads swimming with ideas and plans.
