starting a project I’ve been wanting to do for a while — embroidering over all the logos on my outdoor clothing. I thought borage flowers would go nicely on this blue-green dress :)

To celebrate RAINBOW!'s release today, I'm going to go over all the daydream references that have been made so far, since it's fun for me to sneak them in 💖 there's a lot of them though, so it's gonna be under the cut!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 1-- Kiki's Delivery Service and E.T.! People focus on the Kiki reference so much that the other seemed to be missed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 2-- Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion, Sailor Moon. Another one obvious enough to be called out in some comments. It was referenced again in episode 54, where this panel was taken from.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 5-- Marceline, Adventure time. One of the few reference that isn't an outfit specifically, but a character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 11-- Revolutionary Girl Utena. Not necessarily supposed to be the characters themselves, just the outfits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 11-- Minako Aino, Sailor Moon. In hindsight, I don't remember why I chose this specific dress to reference and not the maid outfits from Sailor Stars or the fruits maid outfits from the manga... especially since I think the fruits maid outfits are adorable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 11-- Catra, She-Ra reboot. I kind of regretted this one immediately just because like 80% of the comments on the episode were "CATRA SUIT!!!" as a result...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 18-- Sailor Moon manga. I was always intrigued by the way characters would be dressed in dreamlike/ethereal sequences in the manga, so this reference was a must for me. I went with the version that is a full dress with straps rather than the dresses from other moments in the manga that have no discernible top half.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 30 and 31-- Not a reference to any specific film or character, but just film noir in general. I do remember referencing a female character specifically for this but sadly I couldn't find it again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 40-- Pomeranian scene, IT Chapter Two. Surely you saw this coming (or maybe not?) I don't think I got the camera angle good enough to really sell this reference, but I couldn't resist it anyways.
Tumblr media
Episode 43-- Adult Losers, IT Chapter Two. The only reference besides Marceline that references the characters themselves, since I normally use our other characters for background character purposes. Also one of the only references that isn't a daydream.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 54-- Disney's Snow White and Cinderella. I couldn't decide which to reference, so I ended up leaning mostly into Cinderella, but referenced the Evil Queen's crown as well. Boo's dress is also somewhat referenced from the the live action Cinderella dress instead of the animated version, just because I liked it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 54-- Treasure Planet and Treasure Planet 2 concept art. Treasure planet is one of my favorite movies, so there was no way I was missing out on referencing it. A few people brought up some wlw pirate webcomic(s?) in the comments of this episode, but the actual reference seemed to be mostly missed. The sash around Boo's waist is also meant to be fabric from her princess dress in the previous panels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 54-- Revolutionary Girl Utena. Another one I was kind of surprised wasn't called out just because of how iconic the whole clothed shadow/silhouette thing is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 55-- Saint Tail. I couldn't reference this one as closely as I would have liked since it probably wouldn't have been very readable as a magician's costume to someone who didn't know it, so it mostly references the brooch from the anime and her hat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Episode 61-- Jane Fonda in Spirits of the Dead. A super random and out there reference, especially to end on, but I liked the outfit so much that I couldn't help it. Maybe Boo used to fall asleep to old movie channels, lol.
That's it, at least for now! We'll have to see what shows up in future episodes~

Things We Can Stop Saying To Fat People Already
Help us keep making cartoons! I make a living mostly from a whole bunch of people pledging $1 or $2, and I really like that a lot. http://patreon.com/barry More about this cartoon at https://www.patreon.com/posts/things-we-can-to-75293817
TRANSCRIPT OF CARTOON
This cartoon has nine panels. The central panel (panel five) has the words "THINGS WE CAN STOP SAYING TO FAT PEOPLE ALREADY" written in large, friendly, somewhat psychedelic-style lettering.
Other than the center panel, each panel features a different scene showing one or two characters speaking.
In addition to the nine panels, there's a small additional "kicker" panel under the bottom of the comic strip.
PANEL 1
A thin woman stands outdoors, wearing a plush winter vest over a plaid shirt, with a knit hat. She's smiling too large and clasping her hands together in front of her chin. Behind her we can see pine trees on a snow-covered hill.
WOMAN: You're not fat! You're gorgeous!
PANEL 2
On a sidewalk in front of a storefront, a man in green pants and a polo shirt looks very surprised, eyes wide, one hand against his cheek. He's speaking to a fat woman with a rolled-up yoga mat strapped over her back, and a gym bag; she's wearing athletic shorts and a tank top. She looks somewhat taken aback.
MAN: You do yoga?
PANEL 3
A woman stands in a kitchen, looking at the reader with a face full of concern, her forefinger pressed against her chin.
WOMAN: Are you sure you should eat that?
PANEL 4
A man stands in front of a shoulder-high brick wall. There's a grassy area, the height of the wall, on the other side of the wall; there are bushes and trees and a wide-eyed dog. The man is holding a hand up in a "no big deal" gesture and looks certain.
MAN: My cousin's friend's wife's barista lost 200 pounds by drinking one less coke a day.
PANEL 5
This is the center panel. It contains the title of the strip, "THINGS WE CAN STOP SAYING TO FAT PEOPLE ALREADY," written in large, friendly letters.
PANEL 6
In a supermarket, a thin, older woman is pushing her cart next to the the cart of a fat man wearing a baseball cap. The woman  is leaning over to examine the contents of the man's cart. (Sharp-eyed readers might notice that the two carts contain exactly the same food items.)
The woman is smiling, the man looks taken aback.
WOMAN: Well, that explains things.
PANEL 7
Two men, one thin and one fat, are jogging next to each other on a suburban looking sidewalk. The fat man, who has a shaved head, is wearing two layers of shirt (a black tee shirt over a mustard-brown long-sleeved tee shirt) and sweatpants. The thin man is wearing running shorts and a striped tee shirt. The thin man's expression  is surprised and maybe a little hostile; the fat man's expression is annoyed.
THIN MAN: You're not trying to lose weight? Really?
PANEL 8
In the foreground, we see a fat woman riding a bike and looking annoyed. Nearby, in the street, a driver is leaning out of his car window to yell at the woman. His expression is hostile.
MAN:  You're FAT!
A small caption at the bottom of the panel says "this really happens!" (And it does! It's happened to me numerous times! I have no idea why people are like this.)
PANEL 9
A thin man is holding out his palms and speaking directly to the reader, looking puzzled and concerned. He appears to be in a den or living room - we can see a little table with a tea cup and flowers, and a comfy looking armchair, in the background. The man is wearing a button-up shirt with a polka dot pattern open over a black tee shirt.
MAN: Have you heard of eating less and exercising more?
SMALL KICKER PANEL UNDER THE BOTTOM OF THE CARTOON
A thin man wearing a black shirt is talking to a fat man with a beard and a pony-tail who looks like Barry (the cartoonist). Both of them have friendly, smiling expressions.
THIN MAN: I'm sure they didn't mean anything. You're being too sensitive.
BARRY: You can stop saying that, too.

This digital music thing will probably reach its endgame sometime in the next decade or so. These are very exciting times.
1337: Part 5 [Explained]
Transcript
[The two men in black bowler hats (RIAA and MPAA agents as known from the previous comic) with their katanas are attacked by Elaine Roberts with her folding knife and Richard Stallman with his own two katanas. Elaine kicks the RIAA man to the left in the back of his leg, while Stallman jumps over the MPAA man to the right, flying high over him from right to left in a flying maneuver hitting his sword while hanging parallel to the ground above the man.] Elaine: Thanks, Stallman! Richard Stallman: 'Tis my pleasure.
[Elaine stands to the left with her knife in one hand having folded it down again. Richard Stallman stands between the two men with bowler hats who are now lying on the floor on either side of him, each with one of Stallman's swords pointing at their throat. Stallman has both arms fully stretched towards them as he looks straight out of the panel. The left (RIAA) man lies flat on his back, his hat and katana lying behind him. The right (MPAA) man is sitting on his knee leaning as far back as he can, since the sword is almost touching the skin on his throat. He wears his hat, but the sword lies behind him, out of reach, even though he is leaning back on one hand close to it. To the far right, a rope comes down from the top of the panel, falling down on the ground so a section of it stretches even farther right in the picture. Down this rope comes a man with googles and a red cape, which is black on the inside. This is Cory Doctorow. He holds onto the rope with two hands, one over one just under his head.] Elaine: So, wait - how did you know we were in trouble? Richard Stallman: My friend here was tracking these thugs from his balloon. Richard Stallman: He called me and I thought I'd stop by. Cory Doctorow: -Hi! Cory Doctorow: Cory Doctorow - It's a pleasure to meet you.
[Elaine has shifted the knife to the other hand. Richard Stallman has moved to the left of the RIAA man, so both bowler hat men are between him and Cory Doctorow. Stallman still points his sword in their direction, but they are lowered. The RIAA man closest to him has picked up his hat in one hand and reaches for his sword with the other hand. The MPAA man now lies on his back, one arm up, leaning on the other. His sword is gone. It does not seem like Doctorow could have taken it. Behind him, Doctorow has reached the ground, the rope hanging behind him. He points left.] Elaine: Balloon? Richard Stallman: Aye. They're up there constructing something called a "Blogosphere." Cory Doctorow: Yup! It's twenty kilometers up, just above the tag clouds.
[The scene is contracted, so to the left, Mrs. Roberts at her desk with her chair and laptop becomes visible (from the previous comic). This without the other people has moved closer. She still types as her son Little Bobby Tables enters and lifts a hand in his mother's direction. He is drawn as a child version of Cueball. Elaine has put the knife away and looks at Richard Stallman, who now stands straight looking at her with the swords crossed in front of his legs. Behind him, just right of the rope hanging down, Cory Doctorow lifts one of the agents up by the throat while looking right and talking to him. The other agent has left the panel. The one he holds has his hat but no sword.] Little Bobby Tables: Mom, I'm hungry. Mrs. Roberts: Hush, I'm coding. You ate yesterday. Richard Stallman: You know, Roberts, GNU could use a good coder like you. Ever thought of joining us? Elaine: Maybe someday. Right now I've got an industry to take down. Elaine: Music doesn't need these assholes. Cory Doctorow: Begone, And never darken our comment threads again!
[Zoom in on Elaine, Richard Stallman, and Cory Doctorow. She stand straight looking at Stallman, who faces towards her swords now on his back crossed. Doctorow is also facing her and holds out both arms towards her. The rope is now outside the panel, as are both bowler hat men.] Richard Stallman: Well, you won't fix the industry with random exploits. You need to encourage sharing in the public mind. Doctorow: Hey; With your music and coding backgrounds, you should get into building better P2P systems.
[The final panel is only a third of the length of the previous panel. The three are still in the panel, but they have moved and are also drawn somewhat smaller. Elaine still faces them right, but now Cory Doctorow is in front of Richard Stallman's swords as before. All have their arms down.] Elaine: What? Straight-up piracy? Cory Doctorow: Sure - have you ever considered it? You'd make a wonderful dread pirate, Roberts.
[To the right of the final panel is a two-column epilogue narrated by Cueball as seen in part 2. It is split into three paragraphs and a "signature." The caption above is centered over the two columns.] Epilogue Cueball (narrating): Elaine shared her ideas with Bram Cohen, who went on to develop BitTorrent. Mrs. Roberts spends her time developing for Ubuntu, and defacing the websites of people who make "your mom" jokes to her daughter. Elaine still stalks the net. She joins communities, contributes code or comments, and moves on. And if, late at night, you point a streaming audio player at the right IP at the right time - you can hear her rock out. ~Happy Hacking.~

Story. Too Fast

[ID: 11 digitally sketched panels in b/w]
Tumblr media
[Panel 1: A young Hare, before he lost his eye, smirking and billowing smoke from his cheek vents, winking. Rabbit narrates over: "Sure, you were always a little rough. But you were young, proving yourself; I didn't mind."]
Tumblr media
[Panel 2: White lines on a black background, showing boots tracks in the mud, a collapsed chruch in the distance, and a smoking, broken corner of another building closer by. Rabbit continues, "Then we were gone to Germany a few years… When we got back…"]
Tumblr media
[Panel 3: Hare as he appeared post-WWII, having lost his right eye and part of his left face, exposing his teeth on that cheek. Rabbit continues, "You'd lost your eye, your voice, your band-- Th-The Jack had been in an accident…"]
Tumblr media
[Panel 4: The lower part of Rabbit's face, pre-transition, post WWII, mouth partially open as if taken back. Rabbit continues, "… You talked about how your Pops laughed when he read Pappy's obituary." ('laughed' is set apart from the rest of the text)]
Tumblr media
[Panel 5: Present day Rabbit pauses, looking down, holding up her hands in an unconscious 'rabbit' position.]
Tumblr media
[Panel 6: Same shot, Rabbit's eyes moving to look at Hare offpanel. She says, "I just… figured you'd had to grow up too fast, while I wasn't looking."]
Tumblr media
[Panel 7: The back of Hare's head and shoulders as he grabs his hat in his right hand. He mumbles to himself, "That can't be right. Why don't I remember? Why--"]
Tumblr media
[Panel 8: A blurry sketch, dark in the corners, of two figures, one sitting on a low wall, then other leaning against it. They seem to be talking; the implication is that this is a young Hare and Rabbit. Hare narrates over, "My head's burning" (there is a gap between 'head's' and 'burning']
Tumblr media
[Panel 9: Back in the present, Hare looks up in horror while Rabbit speaks behind him, not looking at him. Rabbit says, "Maybe your family's onto something." Hare whispers, "Family?" Rabbit says, "But, if you can't talk to them, I--" Hare whispers, "Dee."]
Tumblr media
[Panel 10: Hare disappears. Rabbit, looking afronted and gesturing with both hands. Hare says, "I gotta go!" Rabbit says, "Wait, was that it? This could'a been a phone call! Do you not have our number??"]
Tumblr media
[Panel 11: Rabbit shouts after Hare, cupping her hands around her mouth, dialogue tilted for emphasism "I don't actually have a phone, you'll need to call The Spine! His number is 619--" The Spine cuts in from offpanel, loudly (in very large text) saying, "RABBIT NO" End ID]

tw: manga spoilers. possibly a few swear words. this is supposed to be light though. don't worry, kids!

THE INVINCIBLE MIKEY.
— mikey and his newly formed kanto manji gang definitely made the mistake of booking the wrong restaurant at first. he and sanzu had to wait outside while kokonoi and the rest went inside to broker a deal between three other gang leaders for territory among other... less than legal stock. it was more than awkward for both but especially for the invincible, feared, powerful, most individually well-known gangster in tokyo. unfortunately for him, sanzu found it hilarious watching his boss sulk like they were little kids again and shinichiro had just denied mikey a taiyaki before dinner.
— so you'd think after the tragic battle against the second generation toman, they'd learn their lesson. but the haitani brothers had forgotten their fearless leader's true age and booked a well-known high-rise restaurant in roppongi frequented by gangsters, politicians, and celebrities alike to work out a deal with some local politician. and once again, mikey and sanzu had to wait outside while kokonoi and the rest of kanto manji's executives went inside.
— maybe mikey smacked sanzu across the face for taking his teasing too far... sanzu may or may not have offered cute, pre-made party hats to mikey to wear on his head while they waited for koko and the rest to finish upstairs.

Would you like to be drawn into the Accidental MerDer or The Secret Diary of Quincey Morris comic?
Join my Patreon now to throw your hat in the ring!
(Note: We have some upcoming mer-person roles coming up, and there's plenty of vampires and a cowboy or two if you're more in the mood for a darker comic role. But ultimately any creature, character, mystical beasty etc. is an option!)
There will be three roles, each with a different level of interaction with the cast and number of panels. These roles are all coming up in the story, some further out than others. I will go over what type of scenes will be coming up that fit your role, and we can work on it together! (Please read Rule #3)
The tiers:
The Grand : $15+ tiers Interact with the main cast! Choose a role/profession! Be in multiple panels, and have a chance to have a recurring role. (See a certain veterinarian from our last Walk On Role!)
The Medium : $5-$10 Be somewhere in 2-3 panels with the main cast. You can choose to space those panels out, or be in several all in a row. No interaction, but you can definitely wave 'at the camera'.
The Last But Not Least : $1-$3 Be in the background of 1-3 panels. You are the lurker. You may stare into the reader's soul. Maybe you're in a chicken suit, who knows.
Rules:
1: You must be able to provide some reference descriptions, photos, or art of yourself, avatar, or an OC you would like to use. You must be 18 years or older if you are using a real image/likeness of yourself. You can totally be an animal, but we must be able to work it into the story in a way that goes with the plot/scenes if you are at the Grand tier level because it will be a tiny bit difficult to work in a talking seagull during a dramatic moment. (Not impossible, though. 👀)
2: Please comment only once on the relevant Patreon post to join, thank you!
3: Any tier level and new patrons can enter but you must remain a patron for at least 4 months from now. If you cannot, for any reason, it's totally okay! But I will have to choose someone else to fill the role as many of these will be drawn at least 2-4 months out and I will need to work together with you on this.
4: You/your character cannot be a part of a romantic relationship or a close friend with any of the main cast. As we must be able to write you off scene without murdering you. 😂 (some exceptions apply!)
The comments will be closed on February 2nd and a random number generator shall choose who will get to be the next walk on roles!

A wild 2023 recap post appears!
Stuff I made this year:
Fiction: Nope. Work continues to consume me.  I DID write like 33k that maybe will be publicly accessible in the future, but who can say.
Playlists: I think the only two I remembered to share were Oleander (a playlist for my Wickedness character) and the vast and the void (what it says on the tin).
RPGs: Also a nope.
Knitting: Made a shawl!  And a hat, technically, that I forgot to take pictures of.
Other stuff: Taught 5 classes, 4 of which were new preps!  Did fieldwork in Japan for the first time since 2019! Gave an hour-long talk in Japanese!  Presented on two conference panels!  Finished two academic book reviews! Survived somehow!  The period between August and December sort of doesn’t exist in my memory?  I was doing things but almost all of those things were work, so. The isolation has been wearing on me, but with the combination of A. not having any time to do anything other than work and B. for Various Reasons questioning whether I want to stay at this job, it's been really hard to build local community. I'm going to try to work on that next year, but also I'm going to have two new preps again in the fall and one of my spring classes is already overenrolled, so who knows how effective that'll be.
Media I enjoyed this year:
Books: I read 46 books this year apparently!  Top picks in no particular order: The Singing Hills Cycle (embarrassingly my jam), The Southern Reach Trilogy (shocking that it took me this long to read this), My Own Devices (even MORE shocking that it took me this long to read this), Imperial Radch (so AGGRESSIVELY my jam), She Who Became the Sun (this was a hilarious accompaniment to one of my fall classes), Camp Damascus (read this on a plane back from Japan which was An Experience), The Tale That Twines (loved the first book; the second book is even better), System Collapse (yeah, no one is surprised that I loved this).
TTRPG: Wickedness!  This was the only new TTRPG I played this year, but it was really good.
Video games: Mask of the Rose and Saltsea Chronicles, both of which I want to/should poke at more. Special nod to 13 Sentinels which we enjoyed 90% of a lot.
Manga/comics: I think the only thing I read was The JOJOLands?
Fanfic: I didn’t actually wind up reading that much fanfic this year again, in part because I was reading so many books.  A few picks, in no particular order: The Gardener (CR C2), Keys to the Castle (CR C2), Whistle Song (CR C2), pieces of (you) me (CR C2), Descriptions of a River Flowing (CR C2), Slip the Blindfold (CR C2), Heart to Heart (JJBA: JJL--PLEASE read this if you care about JJL at all), riverside beatitudes (JJBA: SDC), Fully formed, ready to run (ExU: Calamity).  Honorable mention to Asking for More (Stranger of Paradise), which is a WIP but made me laugh so hard I hit myself in the face with my phone.
Films: I actually watched like eight movies this year!  All but two of the new ones on a plane, to be fair, but.  Top picks: Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse and Shoplifters (『万引き家族』).  Honorary mention to Suzume.
TV: Finally finished Stone Ocean!  It was good!  Rowan and I are also like halfway through catching up on TGCF and it is also very good.
Podcasts:  Continued to listen to way too many of these.  Top picks: The Silt Verses, Trice Forgotten, Within the Wires (hey can we talk about the newest season? truly wild), and Re: Dracula.  Honorable mentions to The Evaporated: Gone with the Gods, 『なんかIWAKAN!』 (WHICH IS TRAGICALLY ENDING???? where am I supposed to get my chaotic Japanese gender and sexuality discussion now :(((((), Cry Havoc! Ask Questions Later, Critical Role, and Worlds Beyond Number.
Music: Dessa's Bury the Lede was excellent, of course.  I also apparently listened to Maisie Peters' The Good Witch a lot (it was in my grading rotation in October). And then this past month there's been a lot of Hozier's Unreal Unearth. But a lot of my listening this year was either albums on the bus (rotating mainly between Quiet Company’s We Are All Where We Belong, Bury the Lede, yorushika’s entire discography that I can purchase, Wednesday Campanella, and various soundtracks) or putting something on loop and falling into a fugue state.  Apparently my top song of the year on Spotify was “Square One,” which I think I put on looping while grading in the spring.  My Spotify top songs list was even more inexplicable than usual this year.
Anyway, あけおめ!!! 良いお年を!!! (or else!!!!)

top five clothing items you wish you'd wear more often, please! and the five you do wear the most, please!
Oh heck! I still have asks from that ask meme thingy I reblogged 2 weeks ago, sorry for taking so long!
Hmm, tough to choose specific things I wish I wore more often. I do have a bunch of fancy 18th century things that sit in my closet most of the time, but usually when I leave the house I'm either going to work or to the grocery store, and I don't feel like being super fancy for that. Cuff ruffles would get in the way of all the hand washing and such, and breeches would be annoying at work because I use machines with knee levers.
I guess I wish I wore my nice shoes a bit more often than just for photos, but they were expensive and I don't want to wear out the leather soles. Maybe I ought to get little rubber soles added.
Tumblr media
Oh, and my embroidered monster waistcoat! I wish I wore that more, but it's from an older pattern that doesn't fit me very well. The embroidery is also a bit worn out in places, alas.
Tumblr media
It's a bit difficult to know which things I wear most frequently, but here are my best guesses for right now. (My summer answers would of course be different.)
1. This brown wool waistcoat from early 2019. I wear it all the time in the cold half of the year.
Tumblr media
Just like the monster waistcoat, it's made from a pattern I drafted before top surgery, so it really doesn't fit me anymore. It's also getting pretty shabby. I've been meaning to make some new everyday plain wool waistcoats for a while now.
Tumblr media
(I wear that green shirt pretty often too.)
2. This cap. It's just two pieces of linen, and I made it in 2018. I like wearing caps indoors when it's cold, and also under my wool hat outdoors. It adds an extra layer of warmth, is softer than the wool hat, and protects it from my very oily scalp.
Tumblr media
I have 3 of these caps, but this one is my favourite. It's also something I ought to make more of.
3. These pants. They're just plain black cotton fall front pants.
Tumblr media
I could pretend I'm wearing them the most because they're fully lined and therefore warmer than my other pairs, but the fact is I've got 3 other pairs of pants with holes worn in them that I need to patch and have been avoiding for a shamefully long time. It's a pretty easy thing to fix, and I will likely put it off for several more weeks, if not more.
I feel the need to point out that not all of my wardrobe is in such a miserable state, I at least have a good amount of shirts!
4. I don't think I have any pictures of it, but my winter coat is just a plain medium grey modern (by which I mean at least a couple decades old) wool one. Here's an image I found on google of approximately the same coat.
Tumblr media
It was my grandfather's, and is a bit too big for me, and the lining is getting pretty worn out. Someday I want to completely pick it apart, recut it, and re-sew it with a new lining, but I can't do that until I have a backup winter coat.
5. This poor flannel nightgown which has finally worn out! Just a few days ago it developed a huge hole in the back panel, and a small one by the button placket, so it's destined to be cleaning rags and/or firestarters.
Tumblr media
The buttons might end up on another nightgown though. So I guess this is no longer a thing I can wear frequently :( In the linked post I actually made 3 nightgowns from the same pattern, and that was the medium weight one, so now I'm down to the very heavy fish print flannel one and the light rayon one, and need to make more. (A very common theme with my wardrobe things, alas. I am slow.)
Tumblr media
But I did just finish a new nightgown this week, made from a completely different pattern that I'm quite excited about! I'll get some pictures soon!

Here are some miscellaneous sketches I’ve made from the past week.
Image description in order:
Image 1 is of Baizhu from Genshin Impact. A side profile till the beginning of his shoulders. He is looking to our right with a soft smile and a hint of his braid is over his shoulder coming to the right.
Image 2 is suppose to be of Desmond Sycamore from Professor Layton for Mermay. He is looking over his shoulder to the viewer. His head turned to the left in a frontward 3/4 angle whilst his body is in a 3/4 angle from the back. He is holding a clam shell in his left hand. His hair is down flowing behind his head. His tail and fins are base on a betta fish’s.
Image 3 is Princess Peach in her Patisserie Peach outfit from the Showtime game. She is looking to our right in a side profile. The drawing is from her head to shoulder. She has a happy expression and is wearing the chef hat and dress. With her hair in two ring braids.
Image 4 is of Rei Furuya/ Amuro Tooru from Zero’s Tea Time and Case Closed. He is looking to the right in a 3/4 angle slightly over his shoulder with a pleasant expression. His right hand holding a round tray to his chest. He is wearing his Cafe Poirot apron and a slightly baggy crew neck sweater with the sleeves rolled up a little over the wrists.
Image 5 is of Sebastian from The Blind Prince Webtoon. It is in a side profile from head to hip. He is facing to the right looking with a neutral expression on his face. Wearing his signature outfit of long coat, waistcoat and striped pants as well as his earrings, necklace and broach looking similar to a peacocks feather design.
Image 6 is Desmond Sycamore in a side profile looking over his shoulder to the side. He is facing our left with a cheeky smile and his head tilted upward slightly. A head to shoulders shot.
End Description.
Side note for recommendations and thoughts on the drawings:
For the Mermay Desmond, I’ve been wanting to draw him for mermay, for about two to three years now but have never had the time to and end up missing the whole month entirely.
At this point I’ve finished the main game of Princess Peach Showtime and am now just playing the fun bonus’s after the main story. It was really fun and I can happily say it is one of my favourite games of all time! I really loved it!
For Rei Furuya I’ve been wanting to draw him since I watched Zero’s Tea Time back in maybe January but failed in my last attempt. I’m happy at least this turned out a bit better. But it’s a really nice slice of life kind of show. It’s only 6 episodes (21 minutes long) and in sub and dub. So it’s really easy to get into (as opposed to Case Closed with 1000+ episodes and 20 something movies.) and was a fun watch.
And finally (sorry if this is too long) The Blind Prince Webtoon it’s a wonderful read with absolutely stunning art by CozyCroww that makes me pause to admire the amazingly lovely panels. I’ve been reading it every Tuesday since maybe chapter 10? I wanted to draw Sebastian so he could pair with The Elaine drawing I’ve made last year where they’re facing one another, so I’m happy they can now be together. Another I hope to draw in digital if I get the chance.

Jester’s Hat Pattern
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I meant to post this on New Year’s Day. Oops. Hello, all 5 followers that aren’t bots! I typed that sentence and realized I haven’t been checking for bots in my sideblog. To be fair, I haven’t been doing a great job of posting to my crochetblr at all since I started it. Let this be the beginning of a year of more-or-less monthly patterns! More updates on the quilt! More one-off posts! This is the year of crochet!
Some of you may have noticed that I changed this blog's title last year. I felt that "NotUrGrannySquares" didn't fit me. I didn't really like it at the beginning, but it's the all I could think of (and it wasn't too creative, since I only spelt it "Ur" because "NotYourGrannySquares" was taken--not to mention, there are plenty of patterns out there with similar names). As I began to collect a few pieces from my mom and grandma for my quilt, I felt more at odds with the blog name: these are my granny's squares! I posted this one a while ago, but the other two from her are waffle stitch samples. One is incomplete, using a merino wool yarn, and the other she fished out of the kitchen when I asked if I could incorporate the wool one into the quilt, and it’s clearly a polyester because it’s slightly melted in the center where it had been holding hot things. I’m obsessed with the texture that’s resulted.
I landed on “crochety” because I’ve described myself as a crotchety old man, the word “crotchety” shares origins with the word “crochet,” and I liked how Dictionary.com defined it.
crotchety adjective 1. given to odd notions, whims, grouchiness, etc.
I am given to odd notions and whims. That’s the whole thesis of my quilt, isn’t it? That’s why I haven’t been posting patterns. When I’m crocheting, I’m crocheting. I can’t stop every row and write down what I did. Worse, I can’t write it down and then rewrite it in a text document. I tried to teach myself coding last year because I was told it’s “just logic,” and being logically minded, I should be good at it. The thing is, it’s also typing, and I fucking hate typing. (You’re looking up at the past 4 paragraphs skeptically. This is different. Just trust me that it’s different. You’ll see what I mean when you look at the pattern and how poorly I’ve cleaned it up because something about typing shit like, “Ch 3, turn, sk 1st st, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next sc, sc 15, ch 2, sc in next sc, sc 15, ch 3, turn, sk 1st ch, sc in sc in sc in sc in sc in next st and to end,” just itches my brain so uncomfortably. Crocheting is so intuitive for me, and translating it from the physical realm to the written kills me. It’s like when I would finish my geometry proof before everyone else, and the teacher would suggest I help the kid next to me, but I couldn’t put it into words. I don’t know, dude, you just put the things where they go. Just put the hook through the correct stitch. Just make it the shape of one third of a jester’s hat. That’s how you make a pattern. Just do the thing that obviously you should do. This is why I like diagram crochet patterns more, which I would like to get into on here in the future. However, this pattern reflects the madness that is my brain trying to type up patterns. When I started this blog, I thought I would do a bunch of patterns like that, maybe with a horror narrative evolving around the monotony and the separation between typography and craft, and then I realized how much tongue in cheek patterning that would require. Hmm. Maybe someday, though.)
So anyway, this is NOT your granny’s pattern because I bet she has better discipline than I do. She would have cleaned this pattern up to the necessary bits. I’m too damn crotchety for that.
All 3 panels will follow this pattern. I used (most of) 3 skeins of Buttercream Luxe Craft 100% Wool yarn. It is yarn weight 5, recommending 6.0mm crochet hooks, and for once I did what I was told.
It appears that Joann has rebranded it to Knit & Crochet, but it also seems I have moved to an area with mediocre Joanns which carry neither. Which is whatever; I have gift cards to better yarn shops.
You can follow the same scheme of adding stitches with different starting row counts. This ended up being a little more than 25 inches in circumference, which made it just a bit too big for me. I rolled up the brim on the underside when I wore it, which worked fine for me and my 21 inch head since it’s a nice thick yarn.
Key I'm using US terms. ch = Chain sc = Single crochet sk = Skip sc2tog = single crochet 2 together That's all you need. It's easy peasy, you got this, gorgeous.
Ch 31. 1. skip 1st ch. sc 30. ch 1, turn. 2-10. sc 30, ch 1, turn. 11. sc 30, ch 2, turn. 12. sk first ch, sc in second from hook. sc across. Ch 2 again! and turn. 13. sk first ch, sc in second, sc 16, ch 2, sc in next stitch and to end. (32 total, 16 on each side. We're gonna stop keeping count, though. I didn't, and it turned out just fine. You'll be fine, as long as all your panels are Shaped.) Ch 2, and turn. 14. Sk first ch, sc in second, sc 17. In 2 ch space {sc, ch 2, sc}. Sc to end. Ch 2, turn. 15-16. You know what you're doing. Sc to that chain space, and sc, ch 2, sc, and keep going. Ch 2, turn. 17. Now it switches up, but not really. Sk first ch, sc in second. Sc to 2ch space {sc, ch 2, sc}, sc to end. NOW. Chain 3. Turn. 18. Sc in second and third ch from hook. sc to chain space {sc, ch 2, sc}, sc to end. Ch. 3. 19. NOW it switches up. Sc in second and third ch, sc across. You hear me? Single crochet across! Skip that chain space entirely this time 'round! 20-22. In 20, you add the ch space in... um. shoot. This is why people keep track of stitches. Add the ch space above where it was in 18. IDK, you got this. ch 3, turn. 23. Hey, just skip that ch space again, okay. Don't argue (you can argue, change the pattern, idgaf). Ch 3, turn. 24. sc in second and third ch from hook, sc 31, ch 2 without skipping, sc 32. Ch 3, turn. 25-27. Same as 20-22. 28. Do that thing where you omit the ch space. Or don't. I'm not your mother. 29-30. Same as 20-22 and 25-27. 31. This is ittttttttt! Single crochet until that 2 chain space where I need you to use that one stitch in the key you forgot about? The sc2tog? Keep sc'ing to the end and fasten the fuck off, you did it.
Now you just have to do that two more times and probably in different colors. Maybe if you're fancy you could do stripes. Row 31 should have 92 stitches, but, like I said in Row 13, as long as it's Shaped, you're honestly good. As longs as the Shapes are Basically The Same, you are grooving.
Sew them up. I slip stitched them together because I'm more comfortable with a hook than a needle (and I think it looks nice). Don’t forget to affix something that jingle jangles. 🃏

3 Part One Piece Trash Theory!!!
Tumblr media
To preface my fallacy, I’ll remind everyone of the character Mother Caramel; whom we were introduced to on Whole Cake Island. She was the figure that in a way ‘raised’ Big Mom and a bunch of other kids, and we know she was on Elbaf at some point. As it turned out, her kind and motherly nature was a rouse. She was actually a figure of the criminal underworld who sells kids off to the government.
Tumblr media
Now into my new theory that has to do with Shanks. Also another kind character who seems to be not only well known, but loved wherever he goes. In recent chapters, we see him in Elbaf where he seems to have some history. And there is a child who, like Luffy, wants to go to sea with Shanks. As he did with Luffy, he teases him and says there’s no way he’d make it with him. In the last panel, Shanks is cast in a shadow. We know who it is, but they chose to hide him in darkness. There’s many ways to reintroduce a known character, but they chose to cloak him in the shadows....
Tumblr media
Going back to the first episode of One Piece, Luffy and Shanks seem to already have had some history. He seems to be a well known and well liked pirate in the area. At first, when luffy mentioned how he wanted to go out to sea Shanks laughed and said he wasn’t strong enough. Luffy then says he can swim; since pirates are on the sea it would make sense to be able to swim in case you’re thrown overboard or whatever. Makes sense in the first episodes with the knowledge of what normal pirates do. Shanks replies with something like, you’ll need a lot more than that to make it as a pirate.
Around this time Shanks’ crew have already obtained the gum gum fruit and left it out in the open on the counter (they must have some serious gall to keep something that valuable out in the open!) So Luffy is sulking at the fact Shanks doesn’t seem to think he’s cut out to be a pirate so he eats his feelings... and the closest thing happens to be that devil fruit. Now, i don’t know if it was a coincidence or not, but Luffy now has the power of the devil fruit. That we now know has the power of Sun God Nika when awakened.
So tying together the character of Mother Caramel to Shanks, maybe instead of selling kids off to the government, Shanks pushes kids to be pirates. Seems plausible. We’ve already seen at least two instances (in the first episode and newest chapter) that he seems to have a strong influence on kids and them wanting to be pirates after meeting/ spending time with him. And we’ve seen him waltz right into mariejois like he’s done it a dozen times before. While he’s there he also TELLS the elders that something needs to be done about Teach! I don’t care if he’s a yonko, what pirate tells the government what to do?? I’ll wait.
BUT! Why does Shanks seem to have invested so much into Luffy? Why give him that oh so infamous yet mysterious Straw Hat? Well I’ll tell you since you didn’t ask! This is the 2nd part of my theory!
Tumblr media
We all know the iconic scene where Shanks saves Luffy from the sea king, thus losing his arm. Ignoring the fact that Shanks is clearly great at treading water, he goes out of his way to lose his arm while saving him. I’m not gonna go into detail as to why this is cuz honestly I couldn’t tell ya. Could just be part of him gaining his trust for the long con. These underground/ gov affiliated types (*cough* CP9) seem to like playing the long game in order to achieve their goals. Anyway, I’ll focus on what comes after.
As Shanks is leaving, he actually does a 180 and INVITES Luffy to go out to sea, become a great pirate and physically give the straw hat back. Like bruh, you just called him a weak punk 5 hours ago!
But now, Luffy has the devil fruit power. And we all know devil fruits can be awakened when wielded by an exceptionally strong user. Shanks has nudged a goal unto him by telling him to be great enough in order to give this straw hat back. Don’t show your face around me until then. Luffy’s main goal is to be the freest. In order to do that, you have to be above the law- a pirate and the strongest; in order to protect what’s yours and in order to obtain the freedom; the world you want. And to Luffy, the pirate king is his ideal of the freest. I don’t remember if Luffy declared being pirate king before eating the devil fruit but if he did, great! Even better for my theory. If not, it was a huge gamble on Shanks’ end. From Egghead, we know devil fruits have wills tied to them and the gum gum fruit seems to tie perfectly to Luffy. This is just an observation, idk if it has anything to do with shanks or if it had anything to do with how Luffy ended up with it. But judging by their reactions after Luffy ate it I’ll think not. That might be when the plan changed...
PART 3!!
Tumblr media
Shanks obtained the gum gum fruit from a government ship that we know from Who’s Who from Wano. Assuming this giant straw hat is one of the ancient weapons...I think the gum gum fruit is a type of key to unlocking the power of this weapon. BUT the only way for it to work is if the devil fruit is awakened to  Sun God Nika for it to actually be effective.
Now, maybe Shanks isn’t directly related/ working with the government, and I might not have a clear idea of what his goal is, but he definitely knows the secrets. Especially about this weapon. I think he knows that this is in mariejois and what it takes to unlock and use it. That’s why he keeps Luffy close, keeps updated on his whereabouts. AND he seems to be on the move, like something clicked after Wano. After Luffy awakened into Nika. Since his wanted poster is now updated to his new form. Luffy has finally become the great pirate Shanks needs. He finally saw what he needs to complete his goal.
WARNING!! THIS NEXT PART MIGHT BE TMI, IDK IF IT’S TRUE, BUT ANOTHER THEORY I CAME ACROSS
Whatever it is. He said it’s time for him to get the One Piece. Maybe he’s going to break the red line or whatever (there was another theory where something happened with the weapons that breaks the red line, in turn destroying fishman island but also bringing them to the surface, and since all the seas will be connected; creating the all blue as well)
END OF WARNING!
So in summary: Shanks is up to something, needs Luffy since he ate the only fruit he needs (idk who he was gonna give it to before or if Shanks was gonna eat it himself but here we are, gotta roll with it), Luffy became what Shanks needs (awakened the devil fruit to unlock the super weapon), and is now on the move. But it also seems like Im is after him too, sooo whoever gets to him first

What do you mean by Alexi and Nathan might now want it (The Rookie) renewed for S6 if they have the syndication deal?
I'm so confused and new to this terminology... thanks 👍🏽
You have to remember that this show is a business. Think of the producers (Alexi + Nathan) as the business owners. They want to make money. In the entertainment industry - you make money when your show goes into syndication (i.e. reruns) Every time a rerun runs, all the actors, directors, editors, and producers make money. This is on top of their salaries - until they die basically unless otherwise stated in their employment contracts. World wide showings. An episode of Friends plays in France at 3 am - people make money.
Everything is salary based until syndication. That's when the big money comes into play. Most syndication contract conversations with distribution companies and other networks like USA, TNT, TBS etc happen around the 100 episode mark. Which usually is in Season 5 - when seasons are 22 episodes long.
Somehow, even with COVID and the weird shortened seasons, The Rookie was picked up for syndication before the end of Season 4. Who knows how they finagled that. I'm guessing that's why NF and Alexi are shifting their focus to the Rookie Fed show - to get that up and running and being successful. They no longer have to be solely focused on the success of the original Rookie show. Additionally, most actor contracts are at a minimum 5-6 years so that the original cast stays in place up until syndication happens. Passive income for those actors, etc.
The focus/shift of Alexi and NF was on blatant display at San Diego Comic Con last month. Most shows use Comicons to boost ad revenue, and to get the fans excited for the coming year. There are panel interviews, meet and greets, receptions, photo ops the works. Huge $$ spent on Public Relations.
I talk about Arrow a lot - but this little second tier comic book character - the Green Arrow - had a show with a hottie lead actor on a second tier network the CW and they maximized their exposure at Comicons. The main characters did all kinds of interviews, panels, meet and greets, signed pictures, photo ops, for hours - and because of their efforts - their show lasted 8 seasons and created a comic book franchine lock on that network. The Flash is still running.
The Rookie did the panel with the whole cast after Season 2 to build up the hype, get exposure for their main characters, etc. However, this year, what happened? The panel consisted of 4 people. Alexi, Nathan Fillion, Niecy Nash, and the Fed producer. That's it. Their focus was on launching The Rookie Fed - not on celebrating the success of the Rookie. And the one Chenford question that got through - was Alexi talking about change and ramifications. Not celebrating the fan favorite relationship - oh no, telling everyone to hold on to their hats and maybe instead focus on this other show - the Rookie Feds.
Nathan is supposedly splitting his time between the two shows - not sure how that will work from a character perspective but whatever.
So my original comment about Alexi and Nathan maybe not wanting a Season 6, is because they've got their rerun contract in place and probably have to do Season 5 for the actors who signed their original contracts. But i would not be surprised at all, if actors start leaving and if Season 6 doesn't happen.
And because of all of that above - Chenford is running out of time for anything to happen. The writers have 22 episodes to get them naked, in bed, and in a serious committed relationship before the end of the season to keep the fans happy. Because at this point, anything above and beyond those 22 episodes will be a gift.

The Masked Singer: S11 E1 (Season 11 Premiere, Rita Ora Joins the Judging Panel)
It’s time for a brand new season of The Masked Singer, and this season a new judge will be joining the panel. Rita Ora, who has judged on the British version of the show, will be taking over for Nicole Scherzinger this season as Nicole is doing a run in the revival of Sunset Boulevard in London’s West End.
It looks like this season will have the same format as the last few seasons. As always, I post before I see any unmaskings, so what you see here are my guesses, not spoilers.
Goldfish 🐠: Was an overnight sensation. Felt like she was living in a fishbowl. A jar of hearts. Two kisses 💋 and a glass slipper. Well, the “Jar of Hearts” could be a reference to the Christina Perri song of the same name. But she doesn’t sound like Christina Perri. The glass slipper could suggest she was in a movie adaptation of “Cinderella”, of which there’s been many. So it could be any of Lily James, Hilary Duff, Selena Gomez, Anna Kendrick, Drew Barrymore, and so on. The bonus clue is a gold record. But there has also been several theatrical productions based off of Cinderella, and one of the judges also brought up Carly Rae Jepsen, who was in a Broadway revival of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella and played the title character. “Overnight sensation” could refer to both her run on Canadian Idol (in which she finished in 3rd place in the show’s fifth season) and her hit single “Call Me Maybe” taking off seemingly overnight. And the kisses? She released an album called Kiss. I’m going with Carly Rae Jepsen for the moment.
Starfish ⭐️: Met Steve Martin and Whitney Houston. Four leaf clover, a Cabbage Patch-like doll. Might be a comedian. The voice is making me think of Jennifer Coolidge from Legally Blonde. Bonus clue: streamed over 50 billion minutes in a single year. Molly Shannon is also a good guess.
Ugly Sweater 🧶: Was wheeled in and may seemingly be an older man. A rabbit in a hat, and he had some hard times. A blue record. The bonus clue: a sweater reading “Featuring”. I’m a little bit stumped, but I think Verdine White from Earth, Wind & Fire may be the best guess here for now. The Flo Rida record Robin Thicke was referring to was “I Don’t Like It, I Love It”, which featured Verdine White on bass. While he’s not particularly as known for his vocals as his bandmates Maurice White (Verdine’s half-brother) and Philip Bailey were, he has performed vocals with the group.
Lovebird 🦜: Says he’s a hopeless romantic. A pink and yellow heart. A wedding cake topper with no bride. A watch with #1 on the face, a pair of dice that add up to 5. My guess is that he’s appeared on The Bachelor or one of its related shows. The bonus clue: a TV screen reading “Leading Man”. He sounds kind of young-ish, and I initially thought he was “Diver” last season (who turned out to be Tom Sandoval from Vanderpump Rules), but I’m going to go with this guess again: Nick Viall from The Bachelor.
Book 📖: He has stories for days and a really good vocabulary. A detective badge and a sign for an open mic night. His mom had a huge influence on him. A ghost, and he is covering a song by last season’s winner Ne-Yo and he wants to prank a friend. Just from the sound of his voice, this has to be Kevin Hart. And his friend? He was in The Real Husbands of Hollywood with both Robin Thicke and Nick Cannon. He’ll likely be the first one eliminated, and if he somehow survives elimination, he’ll unmask himself anyway. And the height of his costume from the soles of his feet to the top of his hat, he’s barely as tall as Nick Cannon! Great prank, sir!

8BitDo Mod Kit for Original PlayStation Classic Controller
Seems good. Wish it had a non-custom and longer than 1’ charging cable.
Tumblr media
(Separate USB-A plug for scale only, not part of kit)
The charging plug for the kit comes detached from the PCB; you have to flip up a little plastic latch on one side of the PCB, slip the ~2 mm wide circuit membrane extending out of the charging plug into the revealed slit, and flip the latch back down to secure it–as detailed via diagram on a ~2 cm tall slip of paper included in the kit.
Tumblr media
Order had said was shipping free from “CN” but USPS tracking showed up in Perth Amboy, NJ two days later, kit arrived at my eastern WA state USA mailbox a total of five days after ordering–beat out the PS Classic Controller I ordered same day from eBay that was shipping from NC, USA.
PCB has a micro USB port on it for updating firmware via 8bitdo’s firmware updater Upgrade tool - Support - 8BitDo ; micro USB cable not included. : P The USB port is inaccessible once the mod it encased in the PS Classic Controller so uh well fortunately it doesn’t seem likely they’ll need to update the firmware again; hasn’t been updated since 2021; I checked and my board was fully updated.
Tumblr media
You can hardware map the buttons. From some documentation:
LEFT + Select : set Dpad as left analogue stick Up + Select : reset Dpad Right + Select : set Dpad as right analogue stick Down + Select : Swap A/B and X/Y mapping *Press and hold any of the key combinations above for 5 seconds to map the buttons. *LED will blink in red to indicate the success of each button mapping. *You need to reset the buttons manually.
Default seems to be as left analog (left+select); the documentation called up+select “Reset” but it sets it as PoV Hat, which it wasn’t initially; right+select sets it as right analog apparently, and that’s the one that moves the Z Axis and Z Rotation graphs in Windows’ USB Game Controllers properties window; as left analog it just moves the cross in the “X Axis / Y Axis” window.
There are three clips holding the small original PCB in place in the controller; once you just pry these lightly apart with your fingers, and detach the VERY thin and fragile-feeling ribbon cable plugged into it, it’s easy to lift the original board out.
“Never used” controller from eBay (not included in kit!):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The kit comes with a tiny Phillips screwdriver that fits the eight(!) tiny screws on the back of the controller perfectly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The new PCB clicks into place very firmly. That thin ribbon cable is a little tricky to place into the very narrow slot, but it gets in there okay with a little delicate wiggling.
The light / charge port sticks out slightly from the case; that’s where it seemed to click in during assembly and it feels VERY solidly mounted so I don’t think I got it wrong, just slightly surprised it doesn’t sit flush; I suppose it’s easier to see this way.
I pressed /\ + Start and the controller came on and blinked the light; went to Windows’ Bluetooth panel, clicked Add, and there it was, “8BitDo P30 classic Modkit”–weird capitalization. ^ D^
Tumblr media
There was a sticky pad on the back of the kit’s battery with a peel-off strip, and then you gotta just glom it on to the inside of the left handgrip, which it rounded rather than flat so maybe not the solidest attachment, but once I sorta jammed it under the big plastic d-pad housing thing where it was somewhat less rounded it seemed to stick in place solidly enough.
Man these old-style PS controllers were so skinny!
Does NOT show up in DS4Windows, darn. ; )
Lists generically as “Bluetooth Wireless Controller” (I think DS4 does, too, when not running through DS4Windows) in Windows’ USB Game Controllers window.
Tumblr media
Steam recognized it by that generic name, click the Begin Setup or whatever button next to it and you go through a thing where you map the buttons to Xbox controller equivalents, using the first-assigned A button to skip any the controller doesn’t have (analog sticks, etc). Went swimmingly!
Tumblr media
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania let me roll right around as soon as I set the d-pad as Left Analog in Steam Input. Everything just worked in Victory Heat Rally, a non-Steam game I have set up in Steam, and Steam precision platformer LOVE 3 just worked.
This thing is so much lighter than a DS4, feels weightless by comparison. Very solid plastic though, no creaking at all UNLIKE Creaky McCreakerson Mr. DS4.
There doesn’t seem to be a way to put it to sleep. The FAQ PS Classic Kit and PS Original Kit FAQ | 8BitDo doesn’t mention it. I think it went to sleep on me once when I hadn’t used it for maybe ~5 minutes or so.
Rough cell-phone-footage-frame-counting input delay comparison vs DualShock 4 ( https://youtu.be/ZjGtkG2JUbA ) seemed roughly equivalent, input lag wise.
Tumblr media
So yeah, although I don’t know about long term like battery life or how my body will end up loving the ergonomics or not vs the ol’ DS4, it seems about as good as can be. I’ve ordered another “new”-from-eBay PlayStation Classic Controller to have as back-up for the kit, although the controllers do feel built like tanks. ; ) But you can’t order them new direct from the manufacturer like you can the kits (trying to convince myself not to be paranoid and order another kit, haha…although hm maybe I’ll have to do that if I’m still grooving with this in a few months, because at that point it would be a shame not to have it forever).
Tumblr media
Update 1:
I'm not sure about the manual on like wake up and stuff; when I took it off the charger and it didn't register as connected and showed no light I tried /+Start like it said but that actually put the controller immediately into pairing mode. On the other hand, if I just press Start, the blue light goes on, it reconnects and everything's fine. So it's more like Start wakes it up, and /+Start -- no holding necessary -- puts it in pairing mode.
Update 2:
It's easy to wiggle the charger socket a bit along the vertical angle when unplugging the charging cable. Opened up the controller to see if I could re-seat the socket more securely somehow but didn't find a way to do it, so I guess that's how it's gonna be--it doesn't really have much to brace itself against in there, but it does have a fairly wide vertical cross-brace inside the casing, so I don't think it's in too much danger of actually pulling out, it just feels like it is. : P

Dis shit again: an unexpected drop
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yesterday I also picked up two vintage hat pins/lapel pins and a set of earrings at the American cancer society. That store be popping, truly like a high end boutique experience but without the prices. So the first hat pin is Klementz gold filled with cultured pearls and blue enamel! Paid 5, worth maybe 20. I want to say…made somewhere in 50s-60s? This brand did fine jewelry too, but mainly higher quality costume jewelry. Gold filled is a fancy way of saying a thin gold layer rolled on a cheap base metal. More gold then your electroplated F21 stuff, but still not that valuable. But still, it’s designed well and it’s sweet! The flowers are Forget me Nots.
The second pin is unsigned and I cannot find anything like it no matter how much I googled. However, I’m reasonably sure it’s mid century modern and supposed to be a starburst, which was a popular design motif, especially with the two tone metal.
Tumblr media
The third set are vintage matroyshka doll earrings, real wood and hand painted. Not super old judging from the style of hook earrings, but possibly twenty years+. They sell new ones too, but the painting is…..sure is something. I like my earrings sweet expressions!
Tumblr media
Also the unexpected: I was walking through the garage when I saw these three random ass silver plate items. The teapot is genuinely old at 1885 manufacture, the lion head ice bucket is mid century modern, and the serving dish I have no idea at all how old. All ballpark at 30-40 but my mom refuses to let me sell any. In her words “if the apocalypse happens we need gold and silver” ma’am if civilization collapses we gonna be struggling for firewood and lucky to be cooking gruel in the silver plate. When my sister bought her house in LA it was due to the previous owner dying, and even after an estate sale, there were some pieces remaining, of which my sister gifted my mom. Sister still has a wood piano and some marble panels with dolphins in the house. Life is a rich tapestry….of stuff.
