Kiro’s Seeking Date Translation [CN]
Tumblr media
Hey, everyone! Just a couple of things before you begin reading. I don’t actually know any Chinese so this translation was done through the power of Google Translate. A HUGE shout-out to @keliosyfan and @cheesy09 for helping me with edits and revising. Thank you!!! 💛
Here’s a link to the date video uploaded by @keliosyfan that you can follow along with.
Also, here’s a link to the call that comes before the date.
*TW: I feel like I should note that this date has mentions of human trafficking.*
This translation contains spoilers for a date that has not yet been released to the ENG server. If you wish to not be spoiled, please don’t look below the cut.
Hope you enjoy~ 💛
*Spoilers for future content below!*
[First Part]
Tumblr media
??: What are you doing kidnapping her, idiot?!
??: She has been with Helios for so many years, she must be his most important woman.
??: With this woman, we can make him write off his debts and also crush his spirit as a gift to those foreigners.
In the dimness, two male voices drifted into my ears.
My hands were tied behind me, and the rope bore through the cloth on my body. The rough and wet touch made me very uncomfortable.
??: If he really cared about this woman, would he always keep her by his side? Tell everyone that she is his weakness?
??: This woman is a target he bought four years ago to get rid of trash and see who in the city found him unpleasant!
Although I was very certain that these people were telling the truth, after hearing those words, my heart still couldn’t help but ache.
??: This is the end of the matter. This woman can’t stay.
??: Sooner or later, that beast Helios will know what you have done. He would never let us get away with it. *Changed some wording*
??: This person has just been taken away, and Helios won’t be so fast.
The icy sound of a knife unsheathing made me clench my teeth. My whole body shook.
The hemp rope had been cut with the blade hidden in my sleeve, and I waited for the opportunity as it gradually approached.
Even though I closed my eyes, I could always see that person’s face and a pair of indifferent blue eyes.
If I died, would he be sad?
Tumblr media
??: Hope... is the most precious thing in this world.
??: Do you want to go with me?
I can’t die yet.
But just before I acted, someone ended up being faster than me.
With a “shink”, it seemed that a sharp weapon pierced the glass and embedded itself into the wooden board. The sudden noise made my heart constrict.
??: Don’t open your eyes.
After an extremely cold and commanding voice sounded, there were shrill screams. In the continuous plethora of sounds, there was the harsh sound of bones being twisted.
I closed my eyes and curled up tightly, worried that this was just a dream.
Until I was hugged in a strong and warm embrace, with the fragrance of smokey tobacco wrapping around me.
I opened my eyes blankly and caught sight of the silver hair that was eye-catching and dazzling in the gloomy thatched house.
Those blue eyes, which were normally calm, were now mixed with a little anger.
MC: ...Am I dreaming?
Tumblr media
Helios: Do you often dream of me?
The man gave me a look, held me, and walked out the door. It seemed to be the warehouse of a wine shop.
(Cut to outside)
Suddenly his figure stopped, and I lowered my eyes to find that a man was holding onto his trousers tightly.
??: Mr. Helios, boss, please forgive us this time. We will soon have a big deal, and then we will be accommodated….
Helios: Is the restaurant I run like an orphanage?
Helios: Repaying debts is justified.
He turned a deaf ear to the man’s pleading and the whispers from the bystanders. He moved his long legs, and the man fell to the ground.
At the same time, a group of people began to move in and out of the store.
MC: Should I first….
Tumblr media
Helios: Don’t move.
His voice sounded impatient. I blinked and didn’t speak anymore.
After the fight was over, Helios raised the corner of his mouth and gave a slight retort to the kneeling man.
Helios: Mr. Cao, you’re welcome to visit Spring Moon Pavillion next time.
??: You foreign devil, don’t lie! Go to hell!
The curse echoed behind us, and the sound of a solid, steady heartbeat fell upon my ears.
Here, people called him many things-- Mr. Helios, the boss, foreign devil.
No one knew his origins. There was a rumour that seemed to say he was of mixed race.
Most of the restaurants, diners and pawn shops in the city were under his name, and there were many other shady places.
Countless people ate his meals, and countless people enjoyed his turf. They were his business partners, his subordinates, and his debtors.
He was the unspoken ruler of this city.
Everyone here respected him and feared him.
MC: Are you hurt?
I felt the person stepping forward seem to pause, but it was only momentarily.
Tumblr media
Helios: No.
I leaned into that somewhat cold embrace, and in my sorrow, it seemed to overlap with the heavy snow from four years ago.
[Second Part]
(Flashback)
I stretched my arms strenuously, trying to grab the flying photograph.
The man behind me tightened the chain on the back of my neck, leaving only the muddy photo in my blurred vision, which ended up crushed with shoe prints on the ground.
Like unforeseen freedom, it broke free, but also decayed. Like my freedom, slowly slipping away with each step.
The world was covered with a film and the insults behind me were drowned out, and only cold white noise remained.
Suddenly, a pair of delicate leather shoes stopped next to the photo, and someone picked it up in the next second.
I blinked slowly, and found an eye-catching and sharp silver light under the extremely gloomy sky.
It was like the first speck of snow that one would find stunning in the late winter, burning straight into people’s eyes, beautiful and cold.
The boy looked around the same age as me, and a pair of azure blue eyes met my own.
The biting cold caused my reaction to delay and another pair of distant and similar pupils appeared before my eyes.
But they were warmer and brighter.
??: Snap out of it!
When my consciousness was pulled back to reality by the pain, I heard screams that did not belong to me. The force that restrained me suddenly disappeared, and I fell directly to the ground.
I reluctantly raised my eyes and found that the silver-haired boy had come over at some point, twisting the man’s wrist with one hand. His gaze shifted from the photo in his hand to me.
Tumblr media
??: Did you stay in the orphanage in the east of the city as a child?
I looked at him dumbfoundedly and lost my voice for a moment.
??: Answer me.
MC: [flustered] ….Ye-yes! I stayed there for a year.
The boy’s eyes seemed to light up for a moment because of my answer, and then became alienated in the blink of an eye.
He threw the man aside, lowered his eyes and wiped off the mud from the photo with his white sleeves, then squatted down and handed it to me.
??: I’ll only ask once.
??: Come with me?
I stared at him in a daze, and the roaring from the outside world came to an abrupt end. Only the voice of the boy in front of me and my own heartbeat could be heard.
MC: Ok.
As soon as I spoke, the boy threw a few silver bills at the man.
The heavy snow fell silently, and I was taken into his arms, like a fragmented snowflake.
The blood, water and frost all mixed together, and I heard his voice in the dizziness.
Tumblr media
??: Starting today, you are mine.
??: My name is Helios.
??: But I don’t like this name, so don’t call me that.
MC: My name is MC….Then um….what should I call you?
His attitude left me a little perplexed.
Helios: If you have something to say, I will acknowledge it.
Helios: Is that photo important?
In the heavy snow on the quiet road, I lifted my head laboriously, trying to muster a smile.
MC: [smiling affectionately] Very important. He was my best friend in the orphanage and a big star in the city.
MC: Everyone loved to hear him sing. He never cared about who his audience was; he shined nonetheless.
MC: It’s just… He went abroad six months ago, so he must be an even better person now.
The boy’s footsteps froze for a moment as if his feet were bound in ice and snow.
Tumblr media
Helios: He’s just an actor.
Helios: A useless profession.
MC: But….it was his smile that gave me strength.
Without him, I would not have been able to hold on till the day I met you.
(End of flashback)
I opened my eyes and turned my head to see Helios sitting on the sofa, casually reading the newspaper. As usual, he should be in the restaurant at this time.
Looking at his profile, the dream I had just now made me a little confused.
It turned out that I had stayed by his side for so long.
He took me back to the small restaurant, healed my injuries and taught me all kinds of things.
Literacy, singing, dancing, medical skills, business….
He was the most ruthless and sharp blade. I had witnessed how he, with his own power, had expanded this small restaurant to its current size in just a few years.
Tumblr media
Helios: Get up and eat if you’re awake.
The sudden words interrupted my thoughts. Helios didn’t look up as he slowly took a sip of tea from his teacup. Seeing him frown, I immediately got up from the bed.
The food had been arranged on the wooden table, the temperature just right; neither too hot nor too cold--
Obviously, the people who prepared this had carefully taken time into consideration.
I looked at the man sitting aside from the sidelines and saw the teacup he put aside. I was a little puzzled.
MC: Is that pot of tea not brewed?
Tumblr media
Helios: It’s poisoned.
Helios: Tastes terrible.
I almost choked on the spring rolls in my mouth and sighed inwardly at his calm demeanour.
I went up to the cabinet, skillfully took out the bottle of medicine and poured out a pill. I walked up to him and handed it over.
Helios: I won’t die.
After hearing the expected answer, I picked up the pill and brought it to his mouth.
He didn’t open his mouth but stared at me coldly.
MC: You don’t need to stare at me. I’m not afraid of you.
With that said, I continued to pry open his mouth with the pill.
Probably moved by my fearlessness, his mouth finally opened slowly and swallowed the pill.
I smiled with satisfaction and when I turned around to continue enjoying my spring rolls, a pair of cool palms swept over my waist.
The incense stick burned quietly, and a small sigh and familiar body temperature covered me closely from behind.
Tumblr media
Helios: Don’t you blame me for using you as bait?
He closed his eyes. His long eyelashes were covered with sunlight and his brows were furrowed.
MC: You taught me that there is no meaningless business in this world.
MC: You bought me. My life is yours.
Tumblr media
Helios: That’s the spirit.
The person behind slowly opened his eyes, his pupils full of jest and scrutiny.
MC: Today I just wanted to go to the temple to ask for a peace charm like in previous years.
MC: I was going to go there by myself, but I didn’t want to cause you trouble.
He probably didn’t believe me. Even so, I explained it word by word.
A cool finger stroked my neck and entangled a few strands of my hair.
Helios: How many years have you been with me?
His sudden question had me stunned for a moment.
MC: ….Three years and two hundred and seventy-five days.
Helios: It’s three years and two hundred and seventy-six days.*
*This is a little Easter egg that @keliosyfan spotted.  “When Helios asked MC how long she has been with him, she says "3 years, 275 days" but he corrects her saying "3 years, 276 days". If you put the numbers together you get 3276 which in CN numeric slang means "love Qiluo(Kiro) for life" or "生爱棋洛"So in a way, he wants MC to say "I love Kiro for life"(3276/生爱棋洛). 🥺😭🤧”
Although his voice was faint, it was conclusive.
I thought about it and didn’t argue with him. For me, there was no difference between one more day and one less day.
Helios: Want to leave?
MC: ….?
He laughed suddenly, but only slightly mocking this time.
Helios: I can teach you enough to live a better life.
After that, he stood up. The sudden drop in temperature made me feel a little cold in this midsummer weather.
Helios: Since you want to leave, I won’t stop you.
Tumblr media
Helios: But leave before the seventh day of July.
[Third Part]
Helios left after saying this, leaving me alone in the room in a daze.
Compared to his sudden expulsion, I was more concerned about another thing.
The seventh day of July.
What was going to happen on that day?
The annexed restaurants, and suppressed merchants….I know what Helios has been doing for several years.
Would my existence cause him any trouble?
I looked at my bare wrists and couldn’t help laughing at myself.
Maybe I was locked in place by a pair of invisible shackles.
I pursed my lips and walked to the closet to take out the bag hidden in its depths. Perhaps it was just my illusion, but it seemed to have been turned over by someone.
(Outside of room)
Outside the dark room, late at night, I tiptoed over with my bag. There were faint sounds of firm punching and kicking coming from inside the room.
Helios stayed alone here every night, not letting anyone come close.
But this was my hidden secret, and I could secretly monopolize Helios at this moment.
As usual, I opened the window a crack.
In the room, Helios was half-naked, and the small old silver locket hung with silver bells, reflecting sharp lines of bright silver light in the cold moonlight.
His movements were swift and fierce, harder than usual as if he was venting out something.
His wet hair was weighed down, and sweat dripped slowly from his lower jaw and down his strong and undulating chest.
He stood at the junction of light and shadow, with most of his face hidden in the darkness.
The sound of cicadas in midsummer made people feel a little restless, and the silver locket on his chest heaved slightly as he panted hard.
Helios stood there and didn’t move. I don’t know what he was waiting for. *The music from the first Valentine’s Day event starts playing so it’s getting steamy 😏*
In the next second, those blue eyes passed through the window and were firmly locked on me.
MC: ….!
I instantly withdrew my head and squatted down.
Tumblr media
Helios: ….Come in.
Helios: I’ll only say it once. *Don’t need to tell me twice!! 😩😩 *
Hearing the slightly stiff tone, I stood up, lowered my head, and pushed the door open. I only took a single step in and then stopped.
Helios: I don’t see you this compliant on weekdays.
MC: ….You knew?! Then why did you never let me go before….
Helios: For my own pleasure.
I suddenly raised my head and found that he had positioned himself right in front of me. His scorching body temperature seemed to be able to cross the distance between us and set me on fire.
MC: I-I didn’t come here today to take a peek, I just….
He lowered his eyes and his gaze flicked across the bag I was holding behind me. His smile melted into a bit of a smirk.
Helios: If you’re saying goodbye, you don’t...
MC: I want you to teach me some martial arts.
I held my breath and did not miss the momentary surprise that flashed through his eyes.
MC: What you taught me isn’t enough.
Helios looked at me condescendingly, his eyes dim. A breeze flitted past my ear as his hand smacked against the door frame behind me.
Tumblr media
Helios: Not enough?
In this tense atmosphere, I tried my best not to avoid his gaze.
MC: You taught me a lot, but….it felt like things had become even serious today.
MC: So I…. I still need you.
Before I finished speaking, Helios suddenly grabbed my left wrist from the outside and at the same time stretched out his leg to hook behind me.
When I lost my balance, his left hand instantly reached out to support my waist, and his right hand came out from under my arm and clasped my wrist from the front again.
When I came back to my senses, I found that I had been directly pinned to the floor, and the bag in my hands had been tossed aside.
The entire movement was executed clean and smooth, and there was only the faint sound of the silver bell on the old silver locket swaying in the silent air.
Tumblr media
Helios: There are many people who need me in this city.
Helios: I can teach you. Want to learn?
He lowered his head slightly, and the old silver locket grazed my chest, which made me take in a sharp inhale. My entire heart and lungs seemed to be occupied by his breath.
I tried to lift up my wrists and lower limbs, but it wasn’t enough to shake off the person above me.
MC: In this bag is the money that I have saved over the past few years. The money you bought me for back then, plus four years’ worth of interest, will be given to you.
Helios: I’m not short on cash.
MC: If you accept the money, I won’t owe you anything, but I will still help you.
I tremblingly stroked the old silver locket on his chest. It carried his body temperature and made my fingertips hot.
It coincided with the seventh day of the seventh month of the first year we met. For the first time, I heard someone cursing him and wanting him to die.
I had cried and went to the temple to ask for a peace charm and an old silver locket. When I got home, I gave them to him together.
I knew that many people in this city hated him, but I wanted him to be safe.
He had just smiled sarcastically at the time, and I threw it away when he turned around. Who knew that I’d see it dangling on his chest here that night.
The silver bells chimed, just like my unstoppable heartbeat.
MC: You still wear this old silver locket.
Helios: I forgot to remove it.
His hot breath fanned my face, entangling with my own breath in the scorching air.
My fingers followed the silver chain of the old silver locket and stroked his chest. I could clearly feel his taut muscles under my fingertips.
MC: There are many orphans like me in the restaurant.
MC: Those merchants who were suppressed by you could always open new shops.
MC: Underground, the losers will always be the bureaucrats who usually bully others and gain funds out of ill will.
MC: I don’t know why you want to be a bad person in the eyes of the city, but what I see is different from others.
Helios: Ridiculous.
MC: This is what you taught me.
Looking at my smile, he snorted coldly, but the moonlight sneaking in illuminated the faint smile in his eyes.
Tumblr media
Helios: You just said it wrong.
He glanced at my bag and lowered his body even further.
Helios: Don’t owe me anything?
Helios: The three years and two hundred and seventy-six days with me were enough for you to repay me?
MC: [confused] You didn’t even see how much there is inside….
Helios: I’ve seen it.
He pulled slightly hard, making me stand up instantly.
Tumblr media
Helios: You owe me too much.
Helios: I’ll ask you to settle the tab later.
Helios: However, you do need to learn some self-defence skills.
Unlike his usual touch, his fingertips caressed my eyes, ears, nose and neck.
Helios: People have many weaknesses.
Helios: Eyes, ears, throat, heart…. *The way he said this sent shivers down my spine 😳🥵*
As he whispered, his fingertips kept moving downwards, making me nervously hold onto that hand.
Helios: [more sexy whispering] What’s the matter? Don’t you want to learn?
Helios: I gave you the chance to leave.
Tumblr media
Helios: But you refused.
[Fourth Part]
Helios implemented his teaching method, “diligently” teaching from the most basic style, which made me extremely embarrassed.
MC: [flustered] ….Can you put on some clothes next time? *MC, no!! What are you even asking?! You enjoy it and you know it! 🥵
Tumblr media
Helios: I can wear what I like.
Seeing the obvious teasing in his eyes, I ran away completely.
Finally, I asked him about what would happen on the seventh day of July, and his expression became a little solemn under the clear moonlight.
Gradually, I became even more sure that this was related to what he had done for so many years.
(Cut to store)
In the early morning of the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, a few foreigners in suits and arrogant expressions came to the store.
These people seemed to be a little unkind, and my heart felt uneasy.
Waiter: Miss MC, a guest of the boss, made a reservation at Spring Moon Pavillion.
MC: Let me take care of it.
With a smile, I went to the foreigners and led them to the booth. I didn’t expect that Helios would already be waiting there.
The moment he saw me, his brows lightly furrowed and he tilted his head slightly.
“Leave.”
I blinked and instantly understood what he meant. After the foreigners walked into the booth, they positioned themselves again at the door.
MC: Boss, your guests are here.
After that, I took a step back and then ridicule suddenly rang out.
??: Leaving already?
Unexpectedly, a foreigner walked over, grabbed my wrist and dragged me directly into the booth.
??: Helios, you must have misunderstood.
??: What is the meaning of a group of men when talking about business?
The foreigner smiled sarcastically. I restrained the urge to shoot and looked at Helios cautiously.
In the next second, an invisible cold front flew past my face, grazing the wrist of the foreigner and leaving behind a small, bloody wound.
No one knew when he fired the shot, and Helios was still leaning on the sofa, lazily looking at the wailing foreigner. He made no effort to hide his coldness and murderous intent.
Tumblr media
Helios: Next time, it’ll be your head.
Helios: Come here.
I stood cautiously behind Helios, and saw a man in a white suit standing up with a feigned smile.
Foreigner: Just kidding. Don’t get upset, Helios.
Helios: Is that what you learned by spying on me every day?
My heart sank and I tried my best to calm my nerves.
Have these people been spying on him?
Foreigner: Don’t say that, we just need to confirm whether you are worthy of our cooperation.
Foreigner: After all, with this kind of business, ordinary people are not eligible to participate.
Foreigner: But….we also have to look at the sincerity of the boss.
His eyes moved from Helios to me with an arrogant smile.
Foreigner: I heard that you have a well-trained girl who is clever and easy to use. I wonder if you are willing to share?
I was shocked and couldn’t move. I waited quietly for Helios’ answer.
Tumblr media
Helios: I can.
The cicadas kept humming noisily, and for an instant, I seemed to be back to that moment from four years ago, when there was only haziness left in this world.
But I just blinked and walked respectfully from the back of the sofa to the foreigners.
It sounded like a serious matter. Maybe he wanted me to be an undercover agent for these foreigners?
Or maybe he just changed his mind again and didn’t need me anymore.
My vision became a little blurred.
Tumblr media
Helios: Did you really think I would say that?
Helios’ arms encircled me from behind. His familiar breath came over me, and his voice was filled with pure mockery.
Foreigner: Helios, what do you mean?
Helios: Your nonsense... will anyone still want it?
The foreigner was stunned as if he didn’t expect him to say that. But in the next second, his expression became fierce again.
Foreigner: So it was you who brought those people…!
In the horrified eyes of those foreigners, Helios’ smile became even more ruthless.
Tumblr media
Helios: I’ve been tired of looking at the faces of you idiots for a long time now.
Helios: I asked you to come today to settle the account.
At Helios’ signal, I slowly withdrew from the booth.
(Cut to lobby)
I didn’t know what would happen to them next, but maybe something would briefly end today.
I returned to the lobby and asked for the guestbook from the front desk. I wanted to distract myself but there was one face that was stuck in my mind.
Helios won’t get hurt, right?
Helios: ….MC.
Did I trouble him again just now?
Helios: MC.
Tumblr media
An impatient sigh sounded in my ears and I felt my figure tilt, and in the next moment, I was trapped in someone’s arms.
Helios: Didn’t you hear me calling you?
MC: Helios….!
Helios: I should’ve said that only you can’t call me by that name.
In this lighted corner, the ambiguous gazes of the other guests in the lobby wandered over to us.
MC: Did you just call me? Wait… Has your matter been resolved?
MC: And let me go first. Th-there are other guests here.
Helios: This is my restaurant.
His fingertips rested on the guestbook, and a faint chilly scent emanated from him.
Helios: Did you really think I would give you to those people just now?
MC: ….
He narrowed his eyes, his voice carrying with it some faint, dangerous warning.
MC: …. I didn’t.
Helios: You’re a terrible liar.
Helios: Why did you walk over?
MC: Because I believe in you. I know you have your reasons.
I couldn’t help holding onto his drooping lapels. At this moment, Helios seemed to reveal all those sharp edges and corners of his heart.
There were only some unfamiliar ones left, which belonged to the insecurities of youth.
Helios: Ridiculous.
As he said this, he pulled me up and walked into the depths of the lobby.
MC: ….Sorry.
Tumblr media
Helios: I’m talking about myself.
I looked up in surprise and saw his slightly ironic expression.
Helios: They have a large munitions factory behind them.
His voice was indifferent, but what he said was like a time bomb, going off in my brain.
MC: Munitions factory?!
Helios: Those foreigners have been smuggling arms into the city.
Helios: I couldn’t find the buyers and sellers, but there was always a steady stream of arms that kept coming into the city.
Hearing this, I felt cold sweat ooze from my back.
I knew what the meaning was behind all of this.
I remembered the unfinished words under the hideous faces of those foreigners just now.
Helios had found those people now.
MC: Why…. are you telling me this?
Helios: Because I want to.
In the midst of my wildly racing heartbeat, his words were sure and firm, as if something seemed to be coming to light.
MC: The merchants and bureaucrats that you suppressed were all related to this, right?
Helios’ silence secretly confirmed my suspicions, and my heart couldn’t help but race.
He always carried all the dangers by himself; walking alone in silence.
Why not ask other people for help?
Just as I was about to ask, I immediately thought of the answer.
With the continuous delivery of arms, both buyers and sellers were in the dark, and easy actions against them would only be a surprise.
Did he destroy those arms?
Tumblr media
Helios: Strength and weapons are necessary.
Helios: Those who really need it will use them to protect important things.
He said this matter of factly with determined eyes as if understanding what I was thinking in my heart.
We walked through the corridor of the hotel and came to the street from the side door.
The dusk was heavy, the red lanterns softly brightening the sights of the entire street, and it was full of liveliness.
The girls blushed as they cuddled up with their partners under the lights and the crescent silver moon.
Such a quiet night made my nose itch.
MC: If those goods were sold to the original sellers.
MC: What would tonight have been like?
I turned my face to look at Helios by my side. The warm yellow lights shone on the side of his stern face. He didn’t say a word, probably accepting something reluctantly.
MC: What you said about this world… What do you think it will look like in the future?
Tumblr media
Helios: There is only brief peace at the moment.
Helios: But suffering will bloom into a flower. (Sidenote: what he means to say is "no pain, no gain." It's one of Kiro's character themes :>)
He raised his head slightly, and the cold moonlight reflected in his blue eyes, like the sea under the moon.
Silent and immense, as if it could contain everything.
Seeing him like this reminded me of those distant eyes.
In a ghostly manner, I took out the crumpled old photo from my purse and held it beside his face.
Helios: Why do you carry this person’s picture with you everywhere?
MC: [smiling affectionately] Because he is special to me.
Helios: And yet you still follow me?
MC: This is different.
Looking at his teasing smile, I snorted at him and looked at the boy in the photo with a warm smile.
Tumblr media
MC: You said that when technology advances in the future, this photo will definitely become the colour in my memory.
Under the blue sky, the blond boy was like a passionate golden sun under the eyes of the crowd.
He smiled and seemed to be able to become a source of invincible courage.
He could gather endless amounts of enthusiasm as long as he stood there.
His voice turned into notes and tunes, dancing along with the wind, driving some of the darkness away.
In this devastated generation, he was like a burning flame.
Kiro: I’m Kiro.
Kiro: Thank you for listening to my song.
Helios looked at the yellowed black and white photo, looking a bit dazed for a while, and a little lonely.
Tumblr media
Helios: No one in this city remembers him anymore.
MC: I still remember.
MC: Even if the whole world doesn’t, I will remember him.
In those turbulent years, I had always remembered the embers left behind by that meteor.
Once, there was a young man named Kiro who helped me through countless dark and dull times with a smile.
Until the day I met Helios. I gained the strength to live again from this person.
MC: I think you are very similar.
MC: Although your methods are different, you are both using your own strength to illuminate and empower others.
Helios’ pupils contracted unconsciously, and became deeper with my words.
The slowly rising paper lanterns glowed with a gentle light, quietly surrounding us, like a tender embrace.
Helios: You haven’t asked for this year’s peace charm.
Hearing what he said, I suddenly remembered that because of the previous kidnapping, I couldn’t find a peace charm.
MC: Seeing your attitude before, I thought that there was something that was making you anxious, so I kept following you.
Helios: What attitude?
MC: You said I should leave before the seventh day of July. I asked you about it later, but you didn’t say anything. Wasn’t it about that serious matter?
Hearing my question, Helios froze for a moment and then turned his face to the side, his earlobes slowly turning red.
MC: Was that not what it meant?
Tumblr media
Helios: ….
He pursed his mouth and the lights shone behind him like a splendid landscape painting.
Helios: Because “weakness” really does become a weakness.
MC: Huh?
Helios: You are the only person here who wants me to be safe and live a long life.
Helios: I was reluctant to wait until the Qixi Festival this year.
Helios: Although, I don’t understand why you would want to wish for peace during the Qixi Festival.
My heart was beating fast, and seeing Helios’ face turned to the side, I found his eyes to be brighter than the stars.
MC: [blushing] Because, because I just happened to run into you at that time. *Changed some wording*
MC: And if it’s the New Year, the wishes would all pile up on top of each other, and God won’t be able to hear them.
MC: During the Qixi Festival, maybe God is used to hearing the wishes for marriage, so he can hear my request for peace without needing it to unheard.
Helios: Then today, in addition to asking for peace, you can also wish for marriage.
Helios smiled slightly with some clarity and sincerity.
MC: ….In that case, a name is needed.
MC: But you never let me call you by this name.
I held my breath nervously and saw his face slowly leaning towards me. I didn’t mind the attention around me, and his breath slowly entangled with mine.
Helios: Let me see.
His protracted tone was a bit tempting and bewitching as if it had lost a thick shell; more naked and intimate than usual, and finally landed on my lips.

Helios: Ki-Ro.
Helios: Please use that name.

(Pachin)Koping Mechanisms, KuroSAWa, and Putting The Ring On It — Thoughts on: Shadow at the Water’s Edge (SAW)
Previous Metas: SCK/SCK2, STFD, MHM, TRT, FIN, SSH, DOG, CAR, DDI, SHA, CUR, CLK, TRN, DAN, CRE, ICE, CRY, VEN, HAU, RAN, WAC, TOT
Hello and welcome to a Nancy Drew meta series! 30 metas, 30 Nancy Drew Games that I’m comfortable with doing meta about. Hot takes, cold takes, and just Takes will abound, but one thing’s for sure: they’ll all be longer than I mean them to be.
Each meta will have different distinct sections: an Introduction, an exploration of the Title, an explanation of the Mystery, a run-through of the Suspects. Then, I’ll tackle some of my favorite and least favorite things about the game, and finish it off with ideas on how to improve it. For this meta and the next (CAP), I’ll have a section entitled “The Faerietale” where I break down the issue of genre within the game and how it adds to the experience.
If any game requires an extra section or two, they’ll be listed in the paragraph above, along with links to previous metas.
These metas are not spoiler free, though I’ll list any games/media that they might spoil here: SHA, SAW, MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SPY, GTH, Rashomon.
The Intro:
Full Disclosure: draft titles of this meta include “Yurei-sing the Tension” and “Using Your Girlfriend’s Mom’s Horrific Death For Fun and Profit”. They ultimately don’t fit the tone of the game (or the meta), but I thought they were fun…so you’re being subjected to them anyway.
Freshly out of the games of growing pains, Shadow at the Water’s Edge is the first of our two Faerietale Games, where we delve fully into Theme and Allegory and other such literary devices — which happen to support some pretty fine mysteries as well. As such, in case you didn’t see it above, both SAW and CAP will have a section diving into the Faerietale-ness of it all (partially because it’s That Interesting and partially to keep the intro section from being like 2k on its own).
SAW is interesting for a number of reasons (which I’ll go into throughout the meta) but one of the things that stuck out to me on a replay was how much it leans on Rashomon for its story about the past. For those unfamiliar, Rashomon is a Japanese film by Kurosawa Akira from the 50s that deals with the rape of a woman and the killing of her husband, a samurai, as told through four different points of view.
Nowadays called “a Rashomon episode” or “false flashback”, the idea of different, opposite points of view being shot and filmed to present to the audience is almost a cliché, but Kurosawa was the first to really bring it to film and to popular consciousness internationally.
Like in Rashomon, we’re presented with different views of the situation at the ryokan (including but not limited to Kasumi’s death) from our characters’ perspectives — and, like in Rashomon, no point of view nor opinion on what happened is ever confirmed to be the Honest Truth.
Was Kasumi’s death accidental, and on whose part was it accidental? Does the world stay the same inside the ryokan, or is it just as prone to change as the rest of the world? Is the ryokan a resort or a prison? Should you respect what your loved one wants for themselves, or is it your job to want something better for them? Takae, Rentaro, Miwako, Yumi, and even Kasumi all have different opinions on these questions, and we’re never told who’s correct, nor to what extent.
Finally, like Rashomon, the game is content with leaving a few answers undiscovered. While shooting the movie, Kurosawa was approached many times by the actors, who wanted to know what “really” happened in the movie — and each time he refused to say, wanting the story to be truly Alive in a way that it wouldn’t be if he answered their questions.
Nancy’s job is to expose the malevolent force in the game for what it is, not to heal the family, nor to make decisions for them.
And speaking of their decisions, let’s talk about what motivates our characters in this game. I know, this intro is already kind of long, and I normally keep this kind of talk for the Characters section, but given how much they intersect in this game, we’re gonna go into it here. All of our suspects here in the game are driven and informed by one thing: their coping mechanisms.
C’mon, no surprise here. It’s in the title of the meta for more than just the pun.
Because our suspects are living in the “Once Upon a Time” section of the faerietale — aka the past — it’s their coping mechanisms that drive them. Takae is driven by guilt over her daughter’s death and fear of a changing world; Miwako is driven by anger towards her family and personally-assumed responsibility over Everything That Happens; Rentaro is driven by selfish pride and concern over his loved one; Yumi is driven by avoidance and individualistic willpower.
These are all common when dealing with loss, and each of these tell us exactly how our characters are going to act throughout the tale. In a very real way, SAW is a game about how we, as humans, deal with the stories that we tell ourselves (another thing that it has in common with CAP), and how that changes the way that we perceive the world.
It’s the breakdown of Rentaro’s coping mechanism — his pride in always being correct — that causes him to Do Evil while claiming that it’s The Right Thing. Everyone else’s mechanisms are what allows for him to be as influential as he is; Kasumi is already haunting Takae, and Miwako is already feeling the world crash down around her. Even though the yurei is just wires and metal and Upsettingly Damp-Looking Hair, its presence in the ryokan isn’t physical – it’s psychological.
Remember, “a ghost doesn’t need to be real to haunt you”.
The Title:
Let’s be real here, we’re getting into the segment of Nancy Drew games where the (most of) titles just kick butt and aren’t afraid to do so. Like, Shadow at the Water’s Edge? Gives you creepy vibes right off the bat even without the yurei on the front giving you The Ring flashbacks. Properly atmospheric without being too specific, and “shadow” gives us the idea that we’re dealing with a monster that’s more ghostly, rather than flesh and blood.
I don’t even have anything negative to say about this title, that’s how good it is — plus, I mean, the acronym is literally “saw”. Awesome.
Let’s move on then to the faerietale behind the title.
The Faerietale
SAW and CAP both function, genre-wise, as a faerietale — a story with few characters, big pasts, legends and magic, and a moral at the end to tie things off. In both cases, interestingly enough, it’s our villain who gives us our “moral” — the Truth that ties the plot, history, and characters together, able to be said in a single sentence. In SAW, it’s this (rather chilling) statement from Rentaro that does it:
“A ghost doesn’t need to be real to haunt you.”
But let’s start at the beginning.
Like in a lot of faerietales, we have two sisters who are as different as can be, an inheritance (a ryokan rather than a crown or a prince), absent/dead parental figures, a wizened mentor related to our main characters (Takae), and a Monstrous Force opposing them and their ‘kingdom’. In this story, Nancy is the Dashing Outsider (not unlike the Prince from The Twelve Dancing Princesses) who vows to learn the secrets, defeat the monster, and save the kingdom, restoring balance to the ‘royal’ family and allowing them to prosper.
(And no, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that in this game Nancy’s the Knight in Shining Armor when CAP and Renate’s talk about them is right around the corner, but we’ll save that for next time.)
Having established that the game is a faerietale, let’s talk about why that actually matters (beyond the fact that it’s kinda cool in itself) when we’re looking at the game.
It basically matters for a handful of reasons: it allows us to figure out the suspect Fairly easily, it allows the writers to Allude to subject matters that are a little Dark for the E/E10 rating that Nancy Drew games normally get, and provides a bridge between the (overall) concrete games of the past and the more thematic, character-development-focused games that we’re coming up on. So let’s break that down.
Assigning our characters faerietale roles lets us see immediately that Rentaro is Missing an easy assignation. He doesn’t fit the prince, doesn’t fit a sibling — he doesn’t fit anywhere, in short, which is our first clue that he’s the villain.
Even ignoring the fact that the yurei is obviously mechanical, that Rentaro has free access to the entire ryokan in a way that no other character does, and that he’s responsible for upkeeping the ryokan (which is why it’s suspicious that he’s not the one Dedicated to figuring out the mystery) — which are all excellent things that point towards Rentaro, his absence in the faerietale points to a hidden role.
Since the only role worth hiding is either an 11th hour ally or a villain, and Rentaro is present from the beginning of the game, it’s pretty clear which one he is.
Situating the game as a faerietale also lets HER play with a few more themes than they normally can, given their target audience. Starting with a rather blatant implication of suicide, the game spins on to abusive relationships, overpowering guilt, and Nancy being, well, downright mean with her questions about a family member’s death.
While Nancy’s always been a bit insensitive, the mystery surrounding Kasumi’s death sends her into the realm of bullheadedly rude (to the point where you can get a game over for it). We see why this writing choice was made in SPY (which we’ll cover in that meta), but it’s one of my favorite things about this game; it takes a slight character trait of Nancy’s and gives it a character-driven purpose.
The last function of SAW (and CAP) as a faerietale is to provide a bridge between the older and the newer games. The older games tended to be self-involved entities: they began with Nancy’s room and ended with the letter to Carson/Hannah/Ned. As the game technology improved and the player base got older, however, that started to not be good enough; Nancy and her mysteries needed to become A World rather than simply a string of cases held together with a handful of familiar names and archetypes.
The first step towards this was the inclusion of the Hardy Boys back in our Expanded games, but it’s really SAW and CAP that show an Active Transition. Faerietales are often thought of, literarily speaking, as the bridge between children’s fiction and adult fiction; they involve simplistic plots and archetypes that children can easily grasp, but teach hard lessons about the world that adults will understand and resonate with.
The earlier Nancy Drew games, on the whole (there are of course a few exceptions), are largely concrete, like the children’s fiction they’re based on. The good and bad guys are simply and easily divided,  Nancy and co. are always the heroes and always do right, and the bad guys always go to jail.
The past few games leading up to SAW start to shift slightly; while generally our heroes and villains are still sharply divided, nothing is quite as simple as it seems (look at TOT, where at least a few bad guys get away and actually profit from their bad actions).
It’s here in SAW, however, where we see that take a sharp shift. Those who should be good guys (Rentaro is a Love Interest, he enjoys puzzles, he’s a ‘fixer’ by trade) aren’t good at all; those who should be the bad guys (Takae and Miwako behave a lot like early Nancy Drew villains with their cageyness, dislike of Nancy, and ability to get Nancy to Second Chance) really aren’t.
In case this point is a bit obtuse, Logan is the perfect example of what I mean.
In SHA, Charleena Purcell has a receptionist (well-voiced by JVS) that at first prevents you from talking to her, but isn’t much of an obstacle. It’s a cut and dried ‘solve this one puzzle’ and then Nancy can talk to the author as much as she chooses — it’s barely an impediment, honestly.
In SAW, we’re dealing with another famous author, who also has a receptionist — Logan Mitchell. Unlike the receptionist in SHA, who’s just Doing His Job and exists long enough for a puzzle, Logan is a rather spiteful character who enjoys hanging up on people, and does it to Nancy with Great Joy.
As a character, Logan matters; he has his own viewpoints, loyalties (that are explored in SPY as well), and his own idiosyncrasies that make dealing with him — repeatedly — a bit like dealing with people in real life. The receptionist in SHA isn’t a character, no matter how much I personally like JVS’ voice work with him. Logan is. And that’s a huge difference in the approach of the games and the shift from the concrete, insert-puzzle-and-go nature of the older games and the more abstract, thematic nature of the newer games.
Whether or not that’s a good thing is up to you, the player, and your personal preferences. But it can’t be denied that there is a shift, and it’s the genius of SAW (and CAP)’s genre-shift to a faerietale that does it.
The Mystery:
Our mystery picks up where TOT left off, with Krolmeister sending Nancy to one of his favorite ryokans in Japan as a thank you for her help in the previous case.
This is how we find out that Krolmeister is apparently Spooky AF, as the ryokan is haunted.
Nancy decides to pick up a job while she’s there (the ‘how’ of her obtaining employment and an E-2 visa so promptly is ignored) as an English teacher to some of the cutest (and one of the most disturbing) children in Japan, which is how she spends her days — and how the game gets away with it taking place Solely at night.
The more time Nancy spends at the ryokan, however — and the more people connected to it that she meets — the more that she suspects that the ryokan might actually be harboring a malevolent entity bent on wreaking havoc and shutting down the place once and for all…
As a mystery, the game is solid; you spent most of your time “on-site” at the ryokan, soaking in the very well-done atmosphere, with only a few moments in-game spent at other locations (such as the pachinko parlor, Yumi’s apartment, etc.), and the amount of work that went into every detail of the ryokan is staggering (especially the garden).
Normally, I wouldn’t hang so much on the atmosphere when talking about the plot, but it’s actually relevant here, since the atmosphere is part of the plot — i.e., is it the ‘atmosphere’ of the ryokan that makes the hauntings happen, and did the ryokan kill Kasumi.
Speaking of Kasumi, she’s one of the biggest open-ended mysteries in this game. Did Shimizu Kasumi kill herself, or was her death an accident, or was it caused by a Paranormal Entity, leading to her becoming a ghost herself?
The game tells us how Kasumi died — cleaning a bath that she had never cleaned before, leading to her drowning — but the circumstances outside of her death like her will and her premonitions about her death speak less to an accident alone and more towards Something causing her death.
In my own point of view, Kasumi — remember, this is the Nancy Drew Universe, where ghosts are actually real — had a bit of Prescient Awareness to her, and knew that her death was coming, though not by what. While there’s evidence towards her knowing about her death that could, if looked at in that light, lead one to suspect Kasumi of suicide, it’s unexpectedly hard to kill yourself via drowning in a shallow body of water. Add to that her future plans, and I think it’s pretty safe to assume that Kasumi knew she would die, but she didn’t plan and execute a suicide.
Of course, there’s good arguments to be made on the other side. Whichever way you look at it, I’m just happy with the presence of loose ends, as that’s not the mystery that Nancy’s there to solve — and, indeed, without the presence of an actual suicide note from that period, is a mystery that simply cannot be solved.
The Suspects:
We’ll start with (and yes, the names will all be in Japanese rather than Western order) Shimizu Miwako, the Younger Daughter in our faerietale and the current force behind the ryokan.
As the one (via a faerietale’s rules) destined to succeed, Miwako sure does get the short end of the stick when it comes to her relationships. Her causing/contributing/worsening the rift between herself and Yumi aside, her boyfriend is actively sabotaging her and her grandmother doesn’t think she should be the one running the ryokan, no matter how good a job she does.
As a culprit, however, Miwako would have been a bit confused, given how much she likes the ryokan and the good job she does with it. For a Miwako ending to make sense, she would have had to been influenced by an actual ghost, sabotaging the ryokan without wanting to and having your usual blackouts that come with Psychic Interference. It would have been interesting, but out of the faerietale genre (and out of the Nancy Drew game genre as a whole) and thus not a very good story.
Next up is the Elder Daughter, Shimizu Yumi, who left the ryokan as soon as she could and instead sells bento boxes in Kyoto. Framed as a sort of free spirit, Yumi doesn’t see any need for her to run the ryokan and instead does something that she likes and is obviously very successful at.
As a culprit, Yumi would have, to be frank, been a major disappointment. Already taking fire from her little sister and her grandmother for the Abject Sin of not taking on the family business, Yumi would have been way to easy, both character-wise and tonally for the game as a whole. The Elder Daughter in a faerietale is usually the one who fails (the Youngest Daughter almost always succeeds), and so it’s refreshing to have everyone but herself consider Yumi a failure.
Their grandmother and quasi-mentor, Nagai Takae, is the other person who helps run the ryokan — much to her displeasure, as tradition dictates that Yumi, not Miwako, help run the family business.
Because someone who resents being there will definitely be a much better worker in the hospitality market than someone who loves the ryokan.
Takae has absolutely no head for anything but her own ideas and clings onto tradition not for its sake, but because change is scary, hard, and (in the case of her daughter’s death) heartbreaking.
As a culprit, Takae would have been interesting, but absolutely impossible — unless she was working with someone else. And as interesting as a Takae/Rentaro team-up would have been, Takae simply has no motive for scaring everyone else out. She needs the ryokan to survive, to do well, if she’s going to be able to cling on to the things that she wants.
Rounding out our main faerietale cast is our Malevolent Force, Aihara Rentaro, the ryokan’s handyman and tech expert, who secretly builds robots resembling his girlfriend’s dead mother and uses them to scare people out of the ryokan.
He’s a peach.
Not only is Rentaro our only option for a faerietale ending, but he’s also just the best option for the culprit in general. Handy enough to build a “ghost”, expected in any place in the ryokan without suspicion, and with a strong (if dickish) motive). Like all Evil Wizards/Malevolent Forces in faerietales, he wants to ruin the kingdom and steal away the Daughter — though, unlike a lot of faerietales, he’s convinced himself it’s For Her Own Good.
Which yeah is super gross, but hey, he’s our Villain. Villains should be a bit gross.
Lastly, we’re going to look at two characters who are inseparable from one another for the purposes of discussion: Savannah Woodham and her assistant Logan Mitchell.
Savannah (as we meet her in SAW) is a former ghost hunter who now writes about technology (hence her presence in Kyoto) who mentioned the ryokan in a book about the paranormal. Not being fond of interruptions, she pays Logan to be her assistant so that he can deal with the calls that she gets.
She also brings in a nice little easter egg talking about CAP, where Castle Finster is implied to be the castle she mentions in SAW.
As a character in the Nancy Drew world (as it becomes a world), Savannah is an odd presence, in that she’s a sage without being an academic. Most of the ‘authorities’ that Nancy calls for information are professors, researchers, etc., but Savannah doesn’t quite fall into that designation.
Sure, she’s written a book, but ghost hunting isn’t exactly a…respected profession or topic — and yet, Savannah is clearly the smartest person in the game (and one of the smartest people that Nancy encounters as phone friends). This is great — Nancy herself is no academic, and I do get tired of the prioritizing of Academia over actual knowledge.
Savannah also gets the best lines, and her VA absolutely smashes it out of the park. I’ll talk more about her as the Nancy Games (beginning in ASH), as a lot of her dialogue is foreshadowing for our next games, but suffice it to say that, other than the Hardy Boys and the Drews, Savannah probably fights only Alexei for the most significant NPC in the ND universe.
Her assistant is no slouch in the Significance department, though.
MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR SPY AHEAD, IF YOU DON’T WANT THEM SKIP UNTIL THE NEXT ALL-CAPS PARAGRAPH.
Logan (according to him) started working for Savannah to make some money during spring break and found the job too weird to quit once break was done (according to him). He loves hanging up on people, resulting in Savannah referring to him as her “lil’ Georgia bulldog”, and would like to go out on a date with Bess (according to him).
Yeah, pretty much everything about Logan should be taken with a grain of salt, as he’s the one who tells it to us, and…well, Logan is a spy. A spy who’s assigned to Nancy at least as far back as SAW, who gets close to her friend(s) and reports back to Cathedral that Nancy’s obsessed with her mother’s death and thus will probably be used by those who want to know Kate Drew’s secrets.
He ‘fires’ Savannah from being his boss prior to GTH because his work is done; he’s completed the mission he’s been assigned and is now working on other things. Logan isn’t a ghost hunter, nor a receptionist, nor a guy who wants to take Bess out on a date — until he needs to be. Like any good spy, Logan is all things to all people, and it’s his tiny bit of backstory in SPY (easily missed if you’re not paying attention — remember, in Nik games especially there’s no such thing as “optional reading” — that makes him so significant in SAW.
SPOILERS END HERE, YOU’RE ALL GOOD TO CONTINUE.
The Favorite:
There’s a lot to love about SAW, so let’s dive right in.
The first thing I’ll mention, because I just mentioned it, is Logan, who is one of my favorite parts of the Nancy Drew universe, let alone this specific game. His VA is great, his dialogue is great, his character is great — he ticks all the boxes, and I love it.
Savannah is, of course, also a favorite; any game with Savannah in it automatically moves it up a few clicks in my estimation. Savannah (and sage-type characters like her) is where Nik’s writing really shines, and her dialogue is always a joy to read and hear.
My favorite moment is actually a tiny moment, despite it being the titular incident: the shadow at the water’s edge. It’s easy to miss, but when Nancy looks in the bath and sees Kasumi’s shadow for that split second…it’s the haunting that games like HAU and CUR really wanted to have — subtle, upsetting, and fully within the bounds of the Laws of Haunting that the ND universe has set up.
My favorite puzzle is hands-down the bento boxes. Longtime readers of this meta series (which will be two years old this summer!) will know that there’s nothing that I like better than a good logic puzzle, and the bento boxes are a great logic puzzle. It’s fun, cute, and I love that you can do it as much as you want.
I do love, lastly, that this game is a faerietale. Having read and analyzed faerietales for a good portion of my life, it’s nice to see that niche interest represented within another niche interest.
The Un-Favorite:
There are a few things in SAW that I really don’t like, as much as I think this game is great.
The most important is my least favorite puzzle: the frame puzzle. This puzzle is one of the few puzzles that actually make me white-out in Rage and refuse to play further, which is a problem given that SAW is actually a great game and I enjoy playing it. It honestly stops me from replaying the game as often as I really should, given its significance to the ND universe, and for how just good it is. I usually make my sister or my best friend play it for me, but I do actually have to leave the room while they do it because it infuriates me that much.
My least favorite moment in the game is a little different, given how good the game actually is; it’s the very end where, depending on the choice that Nancy makes, Rentaro’s apology is accepted by Miwako. Sure, Nancy says it’s unlikely that they’ll date again, but this is a case where the choice to tell on him or have him tell himself should result in the same result: him having to leave. Handymen aren’t thin on the ground, and the ryokan needs help, rather than the same toxic influence that helped bring it down in the first place.
While I appreciate the choice for Nancy impacting the end — I really do — it should say more about Nancy as a character than it should about Miwako and Rentaro. That it doesn’t is a failure in storytelling at the 11th hour, which is a shame in a game this good.
The Fix:
So how would I fix Shadow at the Water’s Edge?
First things first, I would obviously change the frame puzzle a bit. I don’t think it needs removed per se, but I would definitely shift it. Give an option to skip it, perhaps, or make it easier the more time you spend on that screen, or make it easier if you go in and out of it a few times. Heck, even having it reset when you back out (or having a reset button) would be better, since getting stuck in the puzzle results in Hours of Frustration.
Other than that, I would only change the ending choice. Like I said above, the choice is great, but it should be changed to show us exactly who Nancy is (not unlike the choice in GTH). Is Nancy the kind of person who would not trust Rentaro to tell himself and thus does it, or is Nancy the kind to give him just enough rope to hang himself?
Either way, we’re given a view of Nancy that we’ll see more and more — that she is not always kind, nor infallible, nor impartial. She lets her feelings interfere with her cases, and while sometimes that’s good (again, GTH is a prime example), sometimes the only impact her choices need to have on her is to show us her character.
All in all, Shadow at the Water’s Edge is a good, mature look at the Nancy Drew universe, and continues the thread of connecting case-to-case. While it’s ultimately imperfect, I believe it’s not only one of the most fun games to play through, but also to consider in the larger realm of Nancy Drew games and in adaptation of genre altogether.

Welcome home (SPN cast reader x crew and boyfriend)
Summary: the readers boyfriend is in the navy and had been deployed for the past year and a half. The boys surprise the reader at a con, and the whole audience knows. And at the end he proposes.
Warnings: crying, fluff, laughing, basic Jared and Jensen joking.
Please give me feedback I’ve wanted to write this for a while I’ve just struggled
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You and they boys were currently at a con. You had been going to cons since you were eighteen; and you were now 21. Honestly you knew the boys had been doing it a lot longer, but for you cons freaked you out. You tended to be one of those people who didn’t care however when it came to cons you cared the most. Everything had been going pretty smothly so far. You always enjoyed cons with Jared and Jensen because they were the two funniest people you know.
Xxxxxxx
“My question is for Y/N” said the audience member which made Jared her fake angry and Jensen to just seriously judge Jared.
“Don’t worry about them sweetie, Jared’s just a two year old in disguise. What your question” you ask politely ignoring Jared hurt expression.
“Well, we know about everyone one else’s love life but we don’t know about yours. I understand if it’s to personal but I was curious if there was possibly a boyfriend in your life” asked the lady from the audience. Suddenly everything when’d quiet, which made you feel uncomfortable.
“Umm... I didn’t really think it was ever that much of a secret but yeah, I do have a boyfriend. I haven’t seen him for a year and a half since he’s been deployed in the army” you say in honestly. The audience just smile and Jared and Jensen look at you making you feel even more uncomfortable.
“Okay next question” says Jared noticing how uncomfortable you were getting. Jared picks another woman in the audience whom also has another question for you.
“So I also have a boyfriend in the military, however he’s only been deployed for about a month. I was wondering what it’s like having such a long distance relationship” said the lady. You sad smile understanding what she was going through.
“Honestly it get easier but harder at the same time. Because you become used to being by yourself without him next to you all the time. But it’s also hard because you can go weeks without a letter and be terrified because you have no if your boyfriend is still alive. And sometimes it gets really hard to think about all the things your missing. I think though, I can give you one word of advice. If you miss him just think about all the good he is doing for you and so many other people. Because without people in the military than the world would fall apart” you say smiling. The lady smiles and passes the mic back to the man.
Xxxxx
“Okay guys so we’re going to have a little competition. Y/N, and Jared are going to see how many darts they can get closest to the bullseye. But there’s a catch, if they win, then they get a suprise”. Said jensen causing the audince to cheer
“When he says surprise, he means, there isn’t a surprise. he just wants to see weaher a girl can beet a guy at a simple task such as sharades” you say causing audiene to once again laugh and jared and jensen to glare at you.
jensen brought out the targets and the games began. it wasn’t much of a competition seeing as jared could hardly get a shot in without it bouncing off the metal. you however managed to get almost every shot smack bang centre. honestly you were suspicious . jared was always pretty good witch accuracy and never had an off day, ever. and it wasn’t like jared to just loose and sit back and take it. he always threw a very fake overdramatic tantrum.
“And Y/N finally won somethin against jared” mocked jensen making you put your hnds on your hips.
“Seriously, am i the only one who thinks thats a bit fishy” you ask to the audience, all of which reply with a shake of there heads, indicating that they did not see anything wrong. What you didn’t know was that they were in on everything.
“Let me guess, I win a bag of snail shells, and an extra week of planking from the two of you” you say with sarcasm.
“We aren’t that mean Y/N” said Jared mock hurt.
“Sure you aren’t” you say rolling your eyes making the audience laugh.
“Here read this out loud” said Jensen passing you a letter.
“Hey baby, this note is currently being written a day before I leave you. If your reading this it means that times are getting tougher. Stay strong Y/N, I love you so much” you finish whispering and trying to stop the tears escaping your eyes.
“Why would you make me read that” you say trying to contain the emotions that you felt.
“ turn around” says Jared making you look at the screen behind you, suddenly is on the screen. The very last picture you had of you and your boyfriend.
“Why are you torturing me like this” you say, unable to contain the emotions. Not realisisng what had happened untill you heard a familiar voice behind you, one you never thought you would hear again.
“Because I asked them to” said the voice. You turned around so slowly you couldn’t believe your eyes. Suddenly nigers falls started falling from your eyes as you gripped onto your boyfriend for dear life, letting his uniform soak the tears you had in your eyes. The audience were flashing photos and gen and Daneel who were backstage with the kids couldn’t stop the tears from falling down there cheeks.
“I missed you baby” he said not removing you from his embrace. Unable to reply you removed your head from his shoulder and smashed your lips into his, causing the audience to erupt in cheers. The kids was very rough, but contained all the emotions that you had. Gen and daneel came out of the wings to go and be with there husbands. They were no where near taking your moment away, but they were not about to miss what was going to happen.
After the kiss ended you just stood there falling into his embrace.
“I love you” you say loud enough for the audience to hear but muffled by his shirt.
“I know you do” he says pulling you tighter to his chest. During that time many fans had not turned of there phones continuing to record everything that was happening. Daneel and Jensen were crying, and Jensen and Jared had smiles from ear to ear.
“You were all in on this, weren’t you” you say pulling away from your boyfriend and looking at them.
“Maybe said Jensen and Jared in unison making you smile. You ran into there arms, not sparing anytime in giving all four of them big hugs, thanking each and everyone one of them individually. What you didn’t notice was that a video started playing behind you. What alerted you however was the sound of the audience starting to sing falling in love by lily Reinhart.
You looked up frozen in your place as you watched the videos and photos from you and your boyfriends 4 years of dating, even the ones where you were so little. You couldn’t help the water works as they once again flowed freely out of your eyes. Once the video had stopped you looked over to Jared and Jensen who were gesturing to you to turn around, slowly you turned around and saw your boyfriend on one knee holding a box with a beautiful ring.
You instantly broke into one of the biggest rages of sobs you had ever experienced. Your boyfriend smiled and everyone elses “awwed”
“ Y/N Y/L/N, I have loved you for four years, and I can’t imagine my life without you, and I never want to go another day in fear that I’m going to loose the one woman who u would do anything for. You are so special to me and never want to loose you, not ever. You make me the happiest man alive , and bring a smile to my face every time I see you. So Y/N, Will you marry me” finished your boyfriend running a finger through is H/C hair.
You break down for what felt like the 100th time and run into his hands once again making his uniform soaked. You stood there for a few minutes sharing a deep kiss trying to tell him how much you love him.
“You never answered my question” he said once again going to one knee, the audience stopped and sat in anticipation while j2 held there wives closer.
“Of course you Idiot” you say looking into his eyes whilst the audience applaud, and Jared and Jensen cat whistle. He slide the ring onto your finger and you wipe your eyes. He embrace you in a hug not letting you go. The cheering of the audience started to blur out whilst you were in your lovers embrace, nothing else mattered at that time, just that you were with the person you love most, and would love most for the rest of you’re life.
“Let’s give it up for loving couple everyone” you hear Jared say into the mic, making you pull you chest away from your now fiancés. You smiled into the audience and help up both your hands, making them cheer even louder.
There were very few moments you had ever experienced emotions as strong as this. You once again hugged (boyfriend name) and weren’t letting go. He tightened his grip around you indicating that he was never letting you go.
You knew for the first time in a long time that you would fall into a easy sleep, with (boyfriend name) holding you, and the people you considered your family right beside you
Sorry it’s so short and crappy, like if you want, I don’t mind, I hope you enjoyed. I just wanted to write about something that would make people smile. Yeah I know the vocabs pretty bad. There will be mistakes but I will go through and fix them later.

Chapter Seven:
The One Where Bastard Man Ruins Everything Yet Again
The very second Jacquelyn had hung up the phone with Larry, she threw herself back under her desk and dialed the number to the man that she had called just a little while ago. “Snicket?” she whispered as the person on the other line answered. “Someone needs a ride, and quick.”
“Got it,” Jacques replied. “May I ask who though?”
“Larry,”
“Larry…” Jacques repeated. He gave a small smile. It’s been a while since he had seen Larry. They had tried to remain close friends after the relationship had faltered but VFD missions surely got in the way of that. “Where from?”
“Prufrock Prep,”
“Ah, I was just headed there to help my niece,” Jacques replied. “I will help Larry as soon as I can…”
“Thank you, Jacques,” Jacquelyn replied.
“Don’t make a mountain out of a molehill,” Jacques replied. “The world…”
“Is quiet here,” Jacquelyn finished.
The world is quiet here. This might sound curious, as the motto of a secret organization, or something an associate of yours, like in Lemony Snicket’s case, his brother, might say when he arrives in his taxi to smuggle you across the border, high up into the mountains for a while until you successfully fake your own death and hideaway in the town where you did your apprenticeship for a secret organization. When the world is noisy...the world may feel as if it is coming apart like in….the case of the Baudelaires and Violet Snicket, who’s life was getting very loud and coming apart very fast.
Klaus and Sunny sat amid a crowd. Klaus had found a row of five seats and he and Sunny were looking around desperately for Violet, Isadora, and Duncan. Suddenly, he saw the three running out to the athletic field. The crowd of other students was chanting and cheering making it vastly fucking difficult for any of the five kids to hear. “What’s wrong?” Klaus asked confused as the three slid in their seats passed him. Isadora sat the furthest away from Klaus and Sunny, Duncan sat between his sister and Violet. Violet sat next to Klaus and Sunny sat in the seat right next to the aisle.
“We think we saw Count Olaf!” Isadora cried.
“What?” Sunny asked unable to hear Isadora.
“We think Count Olaf is here!” Duncan screamed.
“Huh?” Klaus asked confused blocking his ears with his hands because the noise was becoming too stimulating for him.
“Thank you. Thank you.” Nero said as he stepped upon the stage. “Welcome to the mandatory pep rally. I don’t know which I like more, the word ‘pep’ or ‘rally’,”
“I like ‘pep’,” Mrs. Bass said, who sat behind the children.
“I like ‘rally’,” Mr. Remora said, who sat behind the children beside her.
“Maybe we should ask our mascot! What do you say?” Nero asked the crowd, who cheered.
“What’s Prufrock’s mascot?” Klaus asked Duncan.
“A dead horse,” Duncan replied.
“What?”
“He said a dead horse,” Isadora replied.
“But that doesn’t matter...You have to listen,” Violet pleaded. “The Quagmires and I saw…”
“Shush!” Mr. Remora hissed from behind them.
“I know things seemed less peppy since our athletes, cheerleaders, and beloved gym teacher vanished on the way home from that away game. But Prufrock Preparatory School has a motto and that motto is ‘Memento Mori’ and it’s an ancient Greek saying…”
“Latin,” Klaus said rolling his eyes.
“...which means, ‘Remember, you will die.’ and soon, indeed, the sun will set, the fiery orb of life, leaving me alone!...alone!...Alone!” he shouted as he looked at the grey sky above. Everyone on and off stage stared at him confused. Duncan took this time to try to write Klaus and Sunny a note, but Mr. Remora closed his commonplace book tossing it to the ground next to Violet and Duncan’s feet. Nero stiffened up. “Until, of course, you meet someone who truly understands and supports you with friendship, camaraderie, and cash bribes. Our gym teacher was irreplaceable, but I have found someone who I know can fill her shoes,”
Violet looked down at the commonplace book saddened by the fact that it had been thrown to the ground and closed shut. She looked up at Klaus and Sunny with a desperate look in her eyes. “Klaus!” she shouted.
Klaus just stared at her for a moment. Trying to block out the noise. “What!?”
“Count Olaf is…” she began before Mrs. Bass shushed her.
“And now, please welcome to the stage, a man with no resume, no letters of recommendation, no credit history, but with such a marvelous ear for music that I’ve hired him as the newest member of our faculty!”
A tall, skinny man stepped onto the stage. The man was wearing sweatpants and a sweatshirt, such as any gym teacher might wear. On his feet were some expensive-looking running shoes with very high tops, and around his neck was a shiny whistle. Wrapped around the top of his head was a length of cloth secured in place with a shiny red jewel. Such things are called turbans and are worn by some people for religious purposes, but Klaus and Sunny took one look at this man, feeling both of their hearts drop instantly. Klaus frowned miserably at the man on the stage, they both knew that this man was wearing the turban for an entirely different reason.
“Your new gym teacher, Coach Genghis!” Nero cheered. The crowd cheered except for the five orphans. Isadora, Duncan, and Violet all turned to Klaus and Sunny, who stayed staring at the man on the stage.
“Count Olaf…” Klaus whimpered.
“Bastard,” Sunny growled.
“So much to learn,” Olaf shouted to the crowd, his eyes fixating right on Klaus and Sunny. His eyes became shiny when he saw his prey sitting next to his newest targets. He smirked. This is going to be easier than I thought… he thought to himself smirking. “...and I am here to school you,” he said smirking mainly at Klaus.
The crowd began to cheer and applaud the awful man. Carmelita jumped on stage dressed up as a cheerleader and began to chant. “Who can’t be beat?!”
The crowd around the kids began to chant in response. “A dead horse!”
This went on for a couple of minutes. The crowd around the children were showing an exceptional amount of school spirit. The term ‘school spirit’ is, in my opinion, a curious one. The phrase might sound as if it refers to a ghost or other undead phantasm haunting an educational establishment like very old gum clinging to a trophy case. Now what I was told ‘school spirit’ actually referred to is the belief that one particular school is better than another. Though, as Violet Snicket and the four younger orphans were about to learn, there are much worse things that can haunt a school.
“I love the energy! I love it!” Olaf shouted to the crowd. Every student besides the five orphans clapped and cheered for Olaf. Sunny bared her teeth at the man, Violet and the Quagmires glared intensely at Olaf, Klaus just stared at the man with sorrow and worry in his eyes. Why can’t he just leave us alone? Klaus thought as he felt Violet slip her hand into his. When he felt her hand, he looked over at her, realizing that he had begun to shake.
“Okay, everyone, settle down,” Nero said addressing the audience.
Olaf feigned a look of pure shock. “Settle down? Do you hear what Vice Principal Shapiro just said?” he asked the crowd.
“It’s Nero, ” Nero corrected.
“‘Settle down’? How often I hear those words come out of people’s ears and into my mouth,” he took his glance from Klaus and began to glance towards Violet. Violet glared back, she was at a safe distance away from where Olaf didn’t have the upper-hand. “‘Settle’ a word which here means ‘settling...for less’ and ‘down’, my personal least favorite direction,” he said as he reached the edge of the stage and began to walk slowly down the steps from the stage to the aisle that separated the crowd of students in two. “Let me tell you a story,” he said in a voice that sounded more like one of those inspirational life coaches rather than a gym teacher. “Some years ago...a woman came to me. She needed my help. ‘Coach Genghis’, she had said to me. ‘I’m a failure. I have no job. My love life is in the pits. I can’t seem to lose these last twenty pounds,” he turned to the students. “I bet that describes just about everyone one of you, am I right?” he joked.
“Ummm, Genghis, they’re schoolchildren,” Nero pointed out.
“Exactly!” He replied to Nero, turning back to the crowd. Beginning to slowly walk again. “And what did I say to her? Do you think I told her to settle down?...” he paused waiting for a response from the crowd. Sunny couldn’t help but giggle when no one responded to him. “Answer me, pippity-squeaks! Do you think I told her to settle down?!” he yelled glaring at Carmelita, who still stood on the stage.
“Probably not?” Carmelita chanted in a rather confused tone.
“Probably not!” the crowd chanted back.
“Probably not, indeed. I told her to stand up. I told her to actualize and incentivize! I told her to keep her eyes in the clouds and her feet on the stars,” Olaf said reaching the orphans’ row of seats. He turned to face Sunny and Klaus, glaring and smirking down at Klaus, who’s face was slowly turning from one of fear and sadness to rage and madness. “And. do you. Know. what. Hap-pened?” He asked staring directly at Klaus, his shiny meeting the death glare of the very angry twelve-year-old. He enunciated every syllable, slowly giving a Grinch-like smirk at Violet’s two younger siblings. He tilted his head so his gaze was also on Violet. “ She died...in a mysterious fire.” He stood for a few seconds looking at first Violet, then Klaus whose face turned dark as it became full unbridled rage. If looks could kill, Olaf would surely have dropped dead due to this face Klaus was giving to the villain, no question about it. Olaf then glared at Sunny, keeping his eyes on Sunny for a rather long time.
Klaus noticed his gaze on his baby sister, Klaus quickly grabbed Sunny and passed her quickly to Violet, who felt it necessary to pass her to Duncan, who shifted Sunny to sit half on Isadora’s lap that way both Quagmires could protect their young toddler bestie if Olaf tried to hurt her.  Both Isadora and Duncan put an arm around Sunny, Sunny may have leaned into their grasp but she still bared her teeth at the villain when he simply smirked at Klaus’ attempt to keep Sunny safe. Violet slipped an arm around Klaus as Olaf began addressing the crowd of students again.
“Wait...what?” Nero asked, the words that ‘Genghis’ spoke finally registering in his tiny brain.
“Settling down is what losers do,” Olaf explained making his way slowly back on stage.
“But the woman you were talking about…” Nero said curiously.
“Settling down is what started World War I,” Olaf misinformed the students of Prufrock.
“Okay, but the story you were telling,” Nero tried again.
“You see, settling down is what happens when you bite your lip, and your lip gets swollen, so you bite your lip again and then you keep biting your lip over and over. I don’t want that. Do you want that, Prufrock Prep?” he asked.
“No!”  the students cheered.
“Let’s bring in the violin!” Olaf cheered. Nero smiled as he took center stage and began to horrifically play his violin. The crowd began to cheer even though no one was interested in his attempts to destroy classical music. The crowd was surprisingly cheering for Count Olaf and he was eating it up. Taking bows.
Klaus just looked like he wanted to die. He just stared frantically at Olaf. “No…” he whimpered, his breathing becoming rapid.
“Klaus?” Duncan asked looking at his maybe-boyfriend.
“He...he...he found us again ,” Klaus said terrified. “ I told you guys...he’s...he’s right there,” Violet could hear the quiver in Klaus’ voice, she turned to see a few tears glistening his eyes behind his glasses. He quickly wiped them. “We’ll never be safe,” he whispered this sentence, the only one who could hear him was Violet and it took a lot of straining to hear him entirely. “I have to do something,” he said aloud, more so to himself.
Violet looked at him confused. “Klaus?”
“I have to do something,” Klaus repeated, only slightly louder this time. “The school is falling for the treachery of an unhinged lunatic,”
Duncan and Isadora looked towards Klaus. “That always happens during pep rallies,” Isadora commented trying to light up the mood.
“I have to do something,” Klaus said taking a deep breath. He slowly stands up, all four other children could tell he was shaking. “ For them, ” he said slowly beginning to walk into the aisle. His legs were wobbly and with each movement on his feet, he felt like he was going to fall. He turned to his baby sister, “Stay here, Sunny,”
“Luck!” Sunny replied sticking both her thumbs up at her brother, knowing it was not the time to argue with him. She leaned back into the Quagmires’ grip. As Klaus slowly reached the stage, Violet realized the closer he got to Olaf, the harder Klaus would shake.
“E-everyone!” Klaus tried to shout, his voice quivering. He looked desperately at Nero. “T-this...this...th-this...man,”
Carmelita began to mock Klaus relentlessly, which was causing some of the other kids to laugh at Klaus. Olaf just smirked at Klaus, making pretend crying faces to the twelve-year-old. “You…”
“What’s wrong, student? Having a panic attack...induced by some unexplained trauma?” Olaf asks in a low hiss, reaching out to grab Klaus’ shoulder, but Klaus flinches back, throwing his arms in front of his chest.
Violet glared when Olaf began to laugh along with the crowd at Klaus. “ That’s it! ” she hissed as she stood up.
“Where are you going?” Duncan asked.
“To help Klaus,” she replied not even turning around. She kept her gaze on Olaf and her younger brother. “Stay here with Sunny, please,” she called back, hissing under her breath as Klaus backed away from Olaf again.
“We’ll help if we can!” Isadora shouted to Violet, who gave a small smile towards Isadora.
“I know and thank you, Isa,” she said blushing a bit. She turned back to the stage. I got this, Lemon Man, I got this. You didn’t risk your life for nothing, I will finish the job. Snickets take care of their own. She thought to herself as she rushed on the stage. She took a deep breath and practically yelled, “ Everyone! Please! Listen! This man is an imposter! ”
“How dare you interrupt a genius!” Nero barked at Violet angrily.
“And his guest violinist,” Olaf remarked.
Everyone on stage turned to look at the feral Snicket girl who was breathing heavy with unbridled fury. Even Klaus, who looked a conflicted mixture of relief and fear, watched Violet in silence as she took a place on the stage near Klaus.
Olaf turned to her with very shiny eyes and back at Klaus smirking at the poor boy, which sent chills down the boy’s spine.
“This man is not a genius…” Violet barked through gritted teeth.
“Vi...what are you doing?” Klaus whispered to his older half-sister, doing his best to keep eye contact with Olaf rather than Violet to pretend like he doesn’t even know who Violet is.
“Helping you,” Violet replied back. “Snickets take care of their own,” she said patting him on the back. He looked at her with a face of worry.
“You don’t have to…you can free yourself from this tragic tale…” he warned her. She shook her head.
“We fight together,” she replied.
He opened his mouth to reply, trying his best to find the words that could make Violet understand just how dangerous Count Olaf truly was. But she turned to him again. “ This man is a fucking imposter!” she yelled again taking a defensive stance between the vile man and her younger brother.
“I think you mean...improviser, dear,” Olaf replied.
“This so-called gym teacher is the notorious villain, Count Olaf!”
Violet and Klaus could hear a gasp in the crowd, it seemed to be coming from the librarian, Miss Caliban.
“A-as long as he’s at Pru-ru-fr-frock Prep...n-n-nobody is safe,” Klaus warns.
“That’s not true,” Carmelita cried. “You’re just jealous. Vice Princie throw them off the stage, and I’ll start my dance over with extra twirls,”
“Well said, adorable little cheerleader,” Olaf commented smiling at Carmelita.
“This man is Count Olaf and we can prove it!”
She turned to Olaf remembering the characteristics of the vile man that Klaus and Sunny had described. She glanced at his disguise, her eyes fixating at the top of his head. She gave the man a smirk. “ If Count Olaf were to remove his turban…!” she yelled, as she reached her arm up towards the creep’s turban. But with cat-like reflexes ‘Genghis’ grabbed Violet’s arm keeping her from ruining his disguise.
“Isn’t she just lovely? Everybody?” he asked the crowd as Violet struggled to reach his turban. He kept a good grip on her wrist causing her to grunt. Klaus watched in a silent panic hoping that Olaf wasn’t harming Violet. “But I am afraid my two bushy eyebrows are going to stay under my turban, which I wear for religious purposes,” he explained.
Klaus rolled his eyes. “A-and what religion would that be?” Klaus asked incredulously.
Olaf glared at Klaus with his shiny eyes, causing Klaus to shake from behind Violet. Violet glared again as Olaf held her arm above her head. He looked at his smartest henchperson.
“Reconstructionist Judaism,” the henchperson of Indeterminate Gender replied as the Hook Handed Man nodded.
“Re-recon-reconstruct…ism... ” Olaf mumbles. He rolls his eyes. “ What they said,”
“I would never ask you to remove your turban, Coach Genghis,” Nero explained sympathetically to Genghis. “I’m against religious persecution, but I can’t speak for the orphans, ”
Both Violet and Klaus rolled their eyes. Seeing that no one was believing them but instead believing Olaf. Olaf ignored the two children’s glare and released Violet’s arm but not before a harsh squeeze and a shove.
“O-Olaf can also be i-identif-fied by the tattoo of an eye on h-his a-ankle,” Klaus studdered.
“My body is a temple, young man!” Olaf snarled at Klaus, who stayed behind Violet.  “I would never sully my skin the way so many young people do nowadays with their hedonistic lifestyle of loud music and abstinence,”
Klaus gave a look of confusion towards Olaf as Violet looked down at Olaf’s shoes, remembering the tattoo that has been haunting her the last couple of days.
“W-why don’t you t-t-take off your sh-shoes and prove it!?” Klaus suggested from behind Violet.
“ If Count Olaf were to remove his running shoes…!” She yelled glaring at the man.
Olaf interrupted her. “I will absolutely not be removing my running shoes,”
“Oh! L-le-let me guess, is that due to ‘religious purposes’?” Klaus asked him mockingly.
“No. It’s just taking off my shoes, you’ll see that my socks are sweaty...which means they’re smelly..which is gross,” Olaf explained.
“We can…” Violet said her voice trailing off. “We can compare Genghis to the photograph of Olaf in the Daily Punctilio!” she suggested desperately. “Please, this is serious!”
“C-count O-Olaf is wanted by the authorities...for sus-suspicion of fraud, th-theft, mur...murder, kidna-napping,” Klaus studdered slowly. He closed his eyes, “Ch-ch-ch-child abuse, and chi-child en-endangerment,”
“You sound like a boring librarian,” Nero mocked. Miss Caliban huffed in response. “Plus we don’t need newspapers now that we have our advanced computer system.”
Violet, Klaus, and Olaf watched as a few AV club members pushed the advanced computer to the stage. Olaf’s eyes widened and Klaus and Violet looked at one another and smiled.
“Oh. Uh, you mean that computer?” Olaf asked nervously, pointing a bony finger at the advanced computer.
“He’s sweating!” Klaus said happily. “He’s nervous!”
Olaf gave a quick glare Klaus’ way. Klaus was right when he said Olaf was sweating and nervous. The vile bastard carefully wiped his forehead making sure he didn’t accidentally knock off his turban. He began to use his hand to fan himself. He began to stutter. “N-no, I’m not… I have naturally leaky pores,”
Nero sighed. “Will you and your pores please stand in front of this very expensive electronic device and just clear this matter up, once and for all?” Nero asked.
“I...I…” he backed away from Nero. He realized that Violet and Klaus were both smirking at him as if they were winning. “I...uh...mmmm...this reminds me of a story,”
Violet and Klaus looked to one another, both siblings sharing a slight nod as they both walked over to the advanced computer system. They both grabbed its side and rolled it towards Olaf, who had backed himself against the wall. Olaf began to shudder nervously as the computer stopped in the perfect spot to get a clear view of his face. He closed his eyes nervously, waiting for his disguise to be fucked. He was trying to decide how to escape.
The computer made a whirring noise and finally, it beeped. Olaf held his breath at the same moment that Klaus had. But unfortunately for Violet and Klaus, the computer’s robotic, monotone voice declared to the crowd, “this is not Count Olaf”. When Klaus heard this, his heart shattered in his chest as he fell to his knees. Violet looked at Klaus and then looked to Olaf, who gave the computer the same confused face that Violet had given it when it claimed Coach Genghis was not Count Olaf. Olaf opened his eyes slowly, his fearful expression disappearing behind a gleeful one.
“See?” he said confidently as he pushed the computer away from him. He glared down at Violet and Klaus, crossing his arms against his chest.
“Yeah, see?” Nero mimicked. Violet just glares at the villainous man as they both realize the same thing at the same time. Klaus was now paralyzed. Both could tell he was trying to not have a breakdown in front of the whole school. Olaf looked at the boy wondering just how far he can push Klaus, while Violet looked down at him with a sorrowful and pitied expression.
Olaf takes this chance to take a step closer to Klaus, who flinched back away from Olaf with a soft whimper. “Please…” he begged in a meek voice, not looking up.
Violet stepped in front of Klaus to shield him. “I think this calls for a little democracy, my second favorite style of government. How many of you want to continue hearing tiresome accusations hurdled at an innocent man by pathetic little orphans?”
Duncan picked Sunny up as he stood tall. “ Investigate further!” He yelled.
Isadora stood alongside her brother and best friend. “ We demand this issue receive further scrutiny!” she yelled.
Surprising to all, the librarian, Ms. Olivia Caliban stood up as well. “Klaus Baudelaire and Violet Snicket seem like honest and decent people. I think we should listen to what they have to say!” she called out.
Violet gave the librarian a quick smile. Even Duncan, Isadora, and Sunny smiled at her. Other than her, no one else in the crowd was willing to help the children out.
“Now...who would love to hear about a new exercise program?” Genghis asked. Genghis smiled when he heard Klaus groan at the word ‘exercise’ but other than that, Klaus stayed there on the ground breathing heavily. Although he was relieved that Violet was still with him. “This new, exciting program is sure to blast your school spirit right out your blowhole!”
Everyone in the crowd cheered.  Nero began to play the violin. “Students! Faculty! Don’t worry if every exercise program you have tried has failed you because I am here to fail you more by putting the ‘whip’ back into ‘whip you into shape’! Everyone, get on your feet, and let's try something that I invented one lonely night at a truck stop, called jumping jacks.” He waited for the crowd to stand, the only three people in the crowd who refused to stand were the two Quagmire triplets and the youngest Baudelaire orphan. “Here we go! Ready? One! Two!” He shouted as he did only two jumping jacks before yelping in pain. “Okay...all right. All right. Let’s cool it down...we don’t want to ham up the old hamstrings.” He groans. “Oh, God, can someone say, ‘class dismissed...for ice water and some deep breaths?” he asked as he grabbed onto one of his henchpeople for support.
“Um…”
“I know...I’ll be okay...I just need a second,” he explained groaning.
“But the…” The henchperson said glancing at Violet and Klaus. Violet stood there waiting for Olaf to explain whatever bullshit he was talking about.
“What? What? Oh...oh yeah...the orphans,” he muttered. “One last thing, everybody. As anyone who has been to junior college knows, orphans tend to have unsound bodies, which as you can see,” Olaf commented pointing at Klaus. “Leads to paranoia...delusion...and of course, untapped wealth.” He smirked at Violet, then turning to the crowd. “That’s why I have developed the Special Orphans Running Exercises or S.O.R.E, for short, which I will be offering to a few select students.”
He stepped forward to address the crowd, glaring at Sunny who sat between the two Quagmires. “Will the orphans in the house please stand?”
After exchanging a look of dread, Isadora and Duncan stood up, this time Isadora held Sunny who simply glared towards Count Olaf with her teeth bared. To all five children's surprise, even Miss Caliban stood up again giving them a small smile.
Olaf gave Sunny a slight wave as she growled at him. Olaf smirked as he began to walk in a small circle around Violet and Klaus as if they were stranded without a boat amid shark-infested waters. This caused Klaus to close his eyes and reach his arms out for Violet pulling her closer to him as she countered all of Olaf's movements dragging a shell shocked Klaus in a circle making sure that he was never exposed to Olaf.
"Hmmm," Olaf snarled bending down a tad bit to make sure Klaus knew that Olaf was referring to him. " I choose you," he said menacingly as he touched the young boy's shoulder. Violet yanked Klaus away from Olaf's cold grasp.
"No…" Klaus whimpered in a rather saddened tone. His tone reeked of desperation and fear, which caused Violet's heart to break for her younger brother and her blood to boil as she did her best to shield her brother from the wicked man. Klaus continued to shake, refusing to look up at his nemesis.
Olaf turned to face the crowd, his glare sent chills down Sunny and the Quagmires' backs. "I choose...the little baby secretary I have heard so much about," he said.
Sunny, still in Isadora's arm, flipped him off. "Toddler!" she yelled angrily although her friends could tell she was scared. Not as scared as her brother but she was definitely scared of what Olaf had planned.
Violet's glare towards the villain intensified as her blood began to boil hotter. This man was definitely Count Olaf, she had no doubt about it. She could hear Klaus cry another desperate "No…" as he shook harder. "She's just a toddler...leave her out of it…" she could hear him whisper.
" And…" Olaf snarled, once again slowly walking the stage. Giving Duncan and Isadora one last look over before slowly turning to Violet.
Klaus, who had his head hidden so he didn't have to see Olaf, felt his heart stop beating. And?... Klaus panicked. There shouldn’t be an ‘and’! Just me and Sunny! His eyes became wide. His absolute worst nightmare was happening. Olaf was now targeting either Violet, his half-sister, or the Quagmires, his new friends. Klaus began to tremble harder in fear blaming himself for ever letting the three get close to him and Sunny. Then a question popped into his mind, causing his breathing to become rigid. Did Olaf also know that Violet was related to the Baudelaires?
Olaf stopped circling the two orphans just as Klaus raised his face to meet the shiny eyes of his arch-nemesis staring at his older sister in a way that Klaus couldn't describe. he just knew the face had vile intentions behind it. He silently glances up at Violet, who stood there stone cold, glaring back at Olaf acting as a human shield for her brother.
" And...Miss Snicket," Olaf snarled. His tone of voice sending massive chills down Klaus' spine. If Violet was afraid, she was good at hiding it because Klaus looked up at her in disbelief. she stood tall, not allowing Olaf or Klaus to sense any fear behind the cold demeanor even though there were fear and uncertainty plaguing at her mind.
Olaf paused for a moment to truly look at Violet. She continued to stand her ground, staring back at him with a face of indifference. The man's stare was getting extremely uncomfortable, just as Violet was going to slightly turn her head allowing her eyes to avert from the villain’s shiny ones, She felt Klaus’ head shift. Dammit! She thought keeping her stare at Olaf. She knew Klaus was now looking at her, she couldn’t be weak now. For Klaus. She told herself as she tried to drain all of her emotions from her face, holding in her fear. For Sunny. Remember, Violet, Snickets take care of their own. They’re counting on you! Everything falls on you now. They’re safety, comfort, and happiness. Keep strong for them! She quietly sighed, hoping Klaus and Olaf didn’t notice. She had to be strong, she couldn’t let Klaus know that she was intimidated. Big sisters are supposed to chase away the monsters, not also be afraid of them. As she stared back as Olaf, with a hand gently placed on Klaus’ head, Violet realized that if she replaced her fear with anger, it was easier to hold her composure.
Olaf waited until both orphans were looking at him. Violet with her cold, emotionless demeanor and Klaus with his desperation and fear. “ Thank you….for being so eager to... volunteer ,” he hissed looking directly into Violet’s eyes, his eyes so shiny that they could blind her. The second he called her a volunteer, her face became dark. He must’ve realized that she wasn’t going to let him get away with killing her father and hurting her siblings.
Violet refused to show him fear, she couldn’t do that because she had to convince Klaus that with her around he is safe and her pride refused to allow it. So she stared right back with a face that could kill. Olaf merely smirking at her. While Klaus adverted his gaze as his face drained of all color and then flushed red with anger. “No…!” He said again but Violet noticed that it wasn’t the same desperate ‘no’ that he had whispered when Olaf mentioned Sunny. This one was stronger, angrier, even. Before Violet could process what was happening, Klaus had shot up to his feet, grabbing Violet and harshly whipping her behind him. He kept a grip on her hand, though and she could tell that he was still shaking.
“ No!” He yelled glaring at the disguised coach. “ Do NOT fucking involve Violet in this shit!”
“Oh, my,” Olaf feigned confusion like it was his first language. “What are you talking about?”
Klaus can feel the tears streaming down his face. “Leave... you better leave her alone!”
Olaf continued to look at Klaus as if he had no idea what the young orphan boy was talking about.
“Klaus…” Violet asked concerned.
“T-th-this batter is between you and me! ”
“Whatever are you talking about?” Coach Genghis asked.
Klaus’ shaking began to be more than he could handle because soon everyone at the pep rally could clearly see his panic attack. Olaf took this opportunity to put a hand on Klaus’ shoulder which put the young boy into a frenzy. Shaking faster and more visibly, crying harder, as he flinched away quickly causing himself to fall backwards on his ass.
“Leave him alone!” Violet yelled at the vile bastard.
Olaf looked down at Klaus, “There’s no need to cry like an infant. Be a man, orphan!” Olaf says cruelly poking Klaus in the chest just as Carmelita began chanting “Crybaby cake-sniffers in the Orphan Shack!” and all at once nearly everyone in the crowd was making fun of Klaus and chanting along to Carmelita. The only faculty member who even gave a shit was the kind librarian, who stood up, and started shushing children and yelling at Carmelita.
Violet glared at Olaf. “You three orphans are to report to the athletics field at sundown and every night until further notice,” he announced as the crowd began to disperse.
Nero laughed. “This, of course, does not excuse you from missing my nightly violin recitals. Oooh, you are going to owe me a lot of candy!”
“Now that’s the sort of leadership I was talking about,” Genghis mentioned. “You are a genius,” Violet rolled her eyes as she listened to the two pieces of shit stroke each other’s egos.
“You’re the genius for nothing,” Nero replied.
“YOu’re the genius for saying so,” Genghis admitted.
“You’re a genius for agreeing,”
“All right, I’m the genius,” Genghis bragged smirking at Violet.
“Drat!” Nero yelled.
The vice-principal began to walk away.
Duncan, Isadora, and Sunny walked over to the stage just as Genghis took a step closer to Klaus. Violet stepped in between the two, glaring daggers. “Whatever you’re up to, Count Olaf , we will put a stop to it!” she hissed.
“ Really?” He asked, feigning confusion. “Because it seems to me, if you Snickets had the skills to stop me, you wouldn’t be having this batch of episodes in your new lives,” he hissed back.
Klaus curled up into a little ball, trying to hide behind Violet’s thin legs. Violet looked down at him and then at Olaf and her heart broke. What did this fucker do to her little brother? She hated not knowing important things.
Olaf smirked as the Quagmires joined them on the stage carrying Sunny.
“Fucker!” Sunny hissed.
“Oh, little Sunny when will you and your cry baby, wimpy brother learn? You can’t survive me! ” he laughed, “your parents really taught you nothing at all.”
This angered Violet, she took Sunny from Isadora’s arms and the two orphaned half-sisters glared at Olaf as they guarded their brother against the cruel fiend.
“ Our parents taught us to survive!” Violet yelled as Sunny nodded waving a tiny fist at Olaf.
Olaf laughed a cruel, sadistic laugh. “Well, I guess...sweet little Miss Snicket... those who can’t do, teach, ” he replied bitterly.
Violet’s face rushed with anger to sadness. She tried to push the anger back to the surface but she soon realized that pushing sadness was harder than pushing down fear. Olaf could see that he had effected her because her eyes lit for about three seconds, a small flare of fire and it flared out almost immediately, quickly turning into a broken ocean blue. She couldn’t hide it, and he could definitely see it.
And with that he gave Violet, Sunny, Isadora, and Duncan an evil grin and then put a hand on Klaus’ shoulder, causing Klaus to jump and scream in shock. “ I told you,... no matter where you go...no matter what you do...I will find you,” he smiled a vicious smile when Klaus looked up. “ At least one of us can actually keep our promise! ” He then began laughing as he pats Klaus on the head, still laughing. “See you three at sundown,”
This time if looks could kill, Sunny Baudelaire would be the orphan killing Olaf with her look of pure, concentrated hate. “ Bitch! ” she shrieked at him as Olaf simply flipped the toddler off.
Sunny and Violet knelt down to Klaus. Sunny rushed to her brother to hug him. Olaf walked away cackling like a madman.
“Prom,” she said to her brother, holding him close. This was her way of saying, “Ignore him, Klaus. You’ve kept good on your promise,”
Klaus shook his head in response. “No, no I haven’t. He’s right, Sunny.”
Sunny shook her head furiously and playfully slapped her brother in the face.
“No!” she said simply. “Bueno,” she told him sternly, which meant, “you’ve done, good.”
Violet looked at Klaus. “Sunny’s right, Klaus. Comparatively, you’re the more fucked up. You’ve obviously sacrificed yourself for her,”
Duncan placed a gentle hand on Klaus’ shoulder which made the bookworm flinch but he looked up seeing Duncan and gave the journalist a small smile.
He turned to Violet. “Sunny and I are never going to be safe,”
She shook her head. “Oh yes, yes you are. Cause you see, Olaf made one very fatal idiotic mistake...he got me involved,”
“Us, too,” Duncan said.
“Don’t worry Baudelaires, don’t feel disgrace. The Quagmires triplets are on the case,” Isadora recited smiling.
Klaus continued to shack his head. “No…” he pleaded with them.
Violet smiled at Isadora. “Sweet poem. I love it.”
“Th-thank you,”  the poet responded blushing.
“You guys...I’m sorry,” Klaus cried.
“For what?”
“For letting you get attached to me and Sunny,” Klaus explained. “Now he’s targetting you too,”
“Klaus...that’s not your fault,” Duncan reassured
“You’re kinds and generous, all three of you are, but we can’t let you get involved,” Klaus said pointedly staring at his older half-sister, who simply glared at him.
Sunny was slowly nodding her head in agreement with her brother.
“Olaf is too dangerous,” Klaus explained.
“He’s too dangerous for you to face alone,” Duncan pointed out. Isadora and Violet nodding in agreement.
“We can run away,” Isadora suggested.
“All of us,” Duncan added as the triplets looked to Violet to agree with them.
“...it’s plausible,” she admitted.
“Our parents' inheritance will be ours once we come of age,” Isadora explained.
“We’re not of age yet.” Klaus countered. “Besides, it wouldn’t matter if we ran away...Count Olaf will still find us...he found us...he always does,” He sighed. “Everywhere we go, he shows up to steal our stupid fortune.”
“How can he get your fortune as a gym teacher?” Violet asked confused.
“Well...there’s treachery lurking in most exercise programs,” Klaus replied laughing at his own joke. “I just...I just can’t believe he fooled everyone again.”
“Not everyone,” Duncan said pointing at himself and his sister.
“Come on, you guys, let’s go back to the Orphan Shack and figure shit out,” Violet suggested holding her hand out for Klaus’. Isadora picked up Sunny as Duncan took Klaus’ free hand. Isadora slipping her free hand into Violets. The five children walked from the athletic field to the Orphan Shack, all trying to think of a way to put a stop to Olaf once and for all.

5738 A.D. 4,1 (UPDATED) (Dr. Stone fanfic)
From here: https://ameftowriter.tumblr.com/post/188742703889/5738-ad-41-dr-stone-fanfic
This is the updated version of the fic above. After watching Episode 22 I had to change this a bit and edited it better to make sure it flowed smoothly. Also I may plan on putting more chapters but I’ll have to see to that later.
Anyway, I love Episode 22 so much and it touched my heart so! I have two more fics incoming that I posted along with this, so that will be incoming soon.
Ao3 | ffnet
Part 1 (This!) | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 ???
Gen still has a hard time taking everything in. Was it really the year 5739? The mentalist just couldn’t wrap his head around it. On top of it all, those statues. So many statues.
They were people, turned to stone.
He realized that something terrible has happened and it affected every human being on earth.
He was affected too, considering the position he woke up from. The last thing he remembered was that he had just finished his act. Hearing the cheers and applause from a delighted audience, that's when everything went dark.
And the next thing he knew was a bright light, and faced an open ocean.
He wondered if this was a prank, he’s seen a lot of celebrity prank shows, to be a victim of that disgusted him. He was a mentalist, being subjected to a prank like this defies his very image. He grumbled at the thought of it as he stood up from his position.
That is until he heard a deep commanding voice from the background.
“Welcome to the year 5739 AD”
He felt cold sweat drip off his currently naked body. He turned to recognize the man who broke him out of the dark stone prison. It was Shishio Tsukasa… the strongest primate high schooler.
He heard him say something about making a choice. That him and those statues behind him were selectively chosen for his new world…
Gen looked up and just could not believe what he saw...
He was then given some clothes to wear, made by their resident tailor named Yuzuriha. He didn’t know who she was, but was grateful for her.
It was… clothes he supposes. It was a tunic of sorts that reached up to his knees. Made of animal skin. He wanted to ask for a T-Shirt and Jeans. Then again… if it really was year 5739, and everyone was petrified…
He nearly stumbled on a statue lying around. He gained back his footing and turned to see what tripped him. His eyes widened to see that it was his manager.
Memories of the man flooded his head. When he first started, he would try to use him, booking his shows back to back, expecting him to nearly give up his own education, family life, and his private life for his acts.  He tried to milk so much money from him, Gen was sure it was borderline illegal. But eventually, he found a weakness to the man and he became an easy target for Gen’s manipulation. Sometimes he used him as a guinea pig for any new acts he had thought of. He nearly had him prance around the streets naked once as a form of revenge.
But if it wasn’t for him, he wouldn’t have become this popular and famous…
He wouldn’t have had the money to…
Tsukasa shattered the manager’s head beneath his feet.
Gen nearly jumped back at the sudden destruction in front of him.
“I apologize for startling you.” Tsukasa spoke up, “I remember this man once, he was your manager yes?”
Gen could only nod.
“He tried to charm me to having you and I do more shows together, he treated us as if were freaks in a carnival. I simply cannot stand adults like that…”
It didn’t take a mentalist to know that every word he spoke dripped of hatred and loathing. Gen looked at the remains of the destroyed statue, and felt his stomach churn.
He hated his manager yes, but…
For someone to just mercilessly destroy that…
They had arrived at the Empire of Might as Tsukasa had called it. Gen could only look at it with awe as he saw various forms of treehouses and caves formed from the mountain. But most of all, he saw that almost every man and even women around him were muscular and looked like they would be able to carry him like he was a feather.
Then Gen met the said tailor, Yuzuriha, and the big oaf that he was pretty sure was her boyfriend, Taiju.
They were friendly and chipper. Gen was surprised to see this. After all it's been about 4000 years and everything around them is gone. For them to act this way.
Well… he wouldn't verbalize it without any sort of evidence. But to him it seemed to be just an act.
He wondered why.
Gen thanked her for the clothes. But wonders if he could ask her for something more… sophisticated. Something that suits his style.
Tsukasa agreed, he saw Gen as a valuable member of the Empire, but he also needed him for a mission.
Yuzuriha agreed to do it without any questions asked.
Gen missed paper and pencil or any kind of writing instruments. But it seemed that the girl understood his directions nonetheless.
Now, he’s curious as to why they're acting this way.
While they waited for his new outfit, Tsukasa then began explaining to him his goals. Goals of creating a new and better world without the adults who tainted it. Gen listened to him intently, and felt himself get pulled into Tsukasa’s ideals. He knew what he meant and fully understood his words and reasonings. After all, he made a living using and exploiting the naivete and idiocy of the adults that ruled the earth. He knew and understood the pain and suffering Tsukasa has mentioned. He had experienced it himself as young as he was. And yet the scene of his manager being crushed underneath Tsukasa’s feet kept playing over and over his head….
Sometimes Gen wondered if that's what kept him from being swayed by Tsukasa's words…
But at this moment he was afraid. Very afraid for his life. He was reborn into this "Stone World" and was spared from a fate worse than death. To even show any resistance to Tsukasa or any of his people would equal his untimely demise.
So he as it was many years ago, put on his mask and showed his agreement to the man's ideals and goals. Even showed support and gave suggestions on who to pick and revive. The mentalist was a master of weaving words into the most believable of sentences, right down to the inflection of his syllables.
Tsukasa was pleased. And that was good enough for him.
That night, Gen just could not sleep. He tossed and turned endlessly as he made the effort to close his eyes and forced his body to sleep. He thought of everything he could remember on how to go to sleep, but that failed him too.
It was strange to him. He remembered during his performance that he was so exhausted that he could collapse the moment he let his body relax. Yet when Tsukasa broke him out of the stone prison that he felt so energized that he could run a marathon and not feel winded. And he certainly still feels that way. He wonders if being asleep for so long had made him catch up to his lost sleep. All nineteen years worth of it.
Well, he did the math and technically he is now 3739 years old…
If there was any kind of sleepiness in him at that moment, Gen had completely lost it.
3720 years…  is a really, really long time…
Yuzuriha finished his new outfit the next day, he was very grateful for her. Especially after hearing the fact that she spent all night with it. Gen felt a bit bad for her, until he heard her voice crack just a little…
Gen did not have supersonic hearing, but as a mentalist, he taught himself to pay attention to people’s subtle noises. He wondered if Yuzuriha was lying to him.
He tried the new outfit on, and it fits him just right. He was definitely impressed with her.
Later, Tsukasa began explaining to him about a certain “miracle fluid” that had broken him out of the petrified state. And that it was located in a special cave. Which was also dubbed, Cave of Miracles.
A miracle fluid that undid the petrification? He couldn't believe that it was even possible. That peaked his interest, not that he would show it.
As Tsukasa brought him to a cave and along a few other muscular men with him. It seemed that he wanted to show respect to nature's bounty and sorts. It was something that lost his interest, and it fell into deaf ears. Thanks to that distraction though, Gen had tripped over a giant root, but he quickly gained footing and held himself against a tree near the cave. He brushed his fingers against a tree without realizing it.
He felt something odd.
He knew tree bark was rough and could hurt depending on the tree, but even so, this sensation felt weird to him. To him it was like… like… Something was engraved into the tree.
He moved his hand away and saw a carving into the tree he held on.
A.D. 5738 4, 1
“Fifty-seven, thirty-eight… Four, One…” Gen read the engraving. “5738, 4, 1…”
It was like everything he had known right now had changed.
His thoughts came back to when Tsukasa told him the current year. He wondered so many things that day, that even today he was still trying to take it all in. He wondered how… how would Tsukasa be able to determine the current year. From what he saw of the strongest primate high schooler, he was more than just a muscleheaded idiot. He had strength, he had skill, he had smarts.
But even so that did not give him a proper answer as to how and why he knew the current date.
Does Tsukasa even know this engraving?!
Was it even really the year 5739?
But this engraving shows it. 5738… It’s been a year since the engraving was written in the tree. April 1st… How did the writer knew of the exact date even…
“5738… April 1st…” Gen repeated himself, “H-How…. How did… How could someone…?”
“No…” Gen gathered his thoughts, “Someone… someone must have carved this after breaking out… They had to. But… How would… would they know the exact date…”
“Is it even possible…?!”
He read again the crude kanji and the numbers written on the tree. It was clearly there. It wasn't some sort of hallucination… It was actually written there…
The mentalist's heart swelled with hope.
“This… this is…” Gen shuddered in excitement at the realization of someone like that ever existed, and broke out first, and to do this, “This is too antastic-fay! Whoever did this… Must be…”
Then his thoughts were interrupted by Tsukasa calling him to the cave.
Gen quickly dashed inside. To see Tsukasa standing in front of a pile of… bat guano. Gen’s nose scrunched up at the awful smell and saw yellow liquid dripping down from the cave’s ceiling, to a clay bowl.
He quickly deduced it as a so called “miracle fluid” that Tsukasa had mentioned. But when he read Tsukasa’s expression and listened to his voice, he felt there was more… than just that fluid…
That night, he couldn’t stop thinking about that engraving.
5738 A.D. April 1.
He wondered who could even do that. In that darkness. For almost 4000 years, calculated the year, month and date. The exact date?! He wondered why would the person even bother to calculate. When normally you'd think of surviving first.
He thought of possibilities. He knew you can tell how old a tree is by cutting it and counting the number of rings… But that would have been a gigantic tree. He considered the number of natural disasters that could have destroyed it way before the next millenia… So he scratched out that idea. He thought maybe some sort of machine that could tell the time had survived, but he hasn’t seen a sign of any kind of civilization, let alone a machine that could tell the time. His thoughts wandered of any kind of sci-fi theory he’s seen. But just like before, he saw nothing…
Nothing from the year 2019.
Gen curled up onto his sheets. It has hit him again, the realization that there was nothing left from the year he knew. No buildings, no cars… no cola even…
He felt the sudden urge for a bottle.
As he realized he couldn’t sleep once again, he stepped outside of his living quarters and saw the stars in the sky. It was numerous, more than he could ever count.
Count…
That's when he thought of something… a completely ar-fetched-fay possibility...
Yes, there was no machine or anything that could tell the time, but the fact remained that time still moved forward, no matter what…
It was something insane. Something that no human being should be able to do, but it was possible…
He had heard rumours of a kid who counted the exact seconds within a month, and he had counted it exactly.
“To count the passing seconds…” Gen thought to himself, “To do that during all that time in the darkness…”
Many feelings he suddenly felt for this mystery counter. Excitement, pity, delight, fear... In order to do that, he would have had to remain conscious all that time… Gen eventually felt nothing and his mind went completely blank after a while. When Tsukasa revived him, he thought everything before was just a dream… a long 3720 year dream…
Gen gritted his teeth, he was nervous, he was scared, he was so lost in this new world, but to even think that there was a person like that, a human being that could do such a thing...
He had to find them… he had to find the person who could have done this feat… He had to know. He had to know this person. He had to pick him apart and understand his own way of thinking. He had to analyze everything about him. He had to know how and why would he do such a ridiculous yet logical thing.
He hadn't felt this eager in knowing a person he hasn't even met.
The rest of that night spent thinking about this person. He smiled at the thought of someone else being this unique.
It was like… to him it was like getting excited over a book he had heard only good reviews about.
Yes, he was skeptical, but the thought of someone like this.
It got him excited.
The next day, the third day, Tsukasa called for him after his meal.
He was called to be given a mission…
“Those dusty old fossils who used to be in power…” Tsukasa began as he led Gen to a path in the forest, it was a bit further from the Empire, “Are even less necessary in this natural world of stone…”
Gen didn’t hear a hint of hesitation from those words. In fact to him Tsukasa spoke of his ideals in such great confidence and conviction, that the mentalist felt a bit swayed by those. Especially when he said…
“But I see a massive amount of potential in you… Gen.”
Gen felt himself snap out of that trance. He knew Tsukasa had a lot of natural charisma, but even he as a master of minds, felt like he was grabbed instantly and quickly, as if he got there by himself. He cursed himself mentally, as he remembered how Tsukasa crushed the statue of his manager, again. And all of the other pieces of statues he has seen scattered everywhere, crushed with his bare hands or by his men.
“There’s something I need you for…” Gen’s attention was grabbed again as Tsukasa cleared some branches to reveal a treehouse, made by… concrete? He wondered. “And your skills as a mentalist will be invaluable…”
Gen saw on the side a few empty jars, crude makeshift spears… he was surprised that even the ladder that leads up to the treehouse was still sturdy. To him it looked like it was all abandoned.
But that wasn't where they went, rather, Tsukasa led him to a hut near the tree house. It had a worn out sign that said, “Laboratory”.
Tsukasa led him inside and the mentalist saw broken clay pots everywhere. He watched his step, as he moved in closer to see more and more broken pieces scattered everywhere. To him it was an obvious sign that whoever lived here scrambled to take everything and left. To the untrained eye that is.
Gen saw this was too intentional. It was too much of a mess for him. He thought maybe a scuffle, but that would have caused those shelves to fall apart. To him, it is as if the previous occupants just intentionally took those jars and smashed them.
“Follow them for me.” Tsukasa gave him his mission, as it also confirms Gen's deductions. “And get inside of their minds… Perhaps I'm being overly cautious, but I want you to track down this man Senku and tell me if he’s dead or hiding out somewhere…”
Senku…
That is the name of the person he was tasked to look for.
‘Senku…’ Gen thought to himself. He tried to think of anyone he knew by that name, none came to mind.
So he asked, “Who is Senku?”
“He, was the first of us to revive…” Tsukasa replied.
‘First? Don’t tell me…’
“He used his knowledge of science to create a formula to undo the petrification.” he continued as Gen took in this invaluable information, “That’s how he revived me…”
Gen couldn’t hide his surprise anymore.
‘This Senku person… revived Tsukasa? He created a formula to undo the petrification?’ The pieces started to fall into place...
“This man…” Tsukasa continued as Gen felt the man’s voice grew bitter, “His only desire is to revive everyone, no matter who they were…”
‘What? He… what? He wants to revive… everyone…?!'
“He’ll bring back the same people who ruined our world.... And they’ll make weapons…” Gen felt every word laced with pure hatred, as he still tried to take in everything.
“He was the most intelligent man alive, and that’s why I killed him myself…”
He saw Tsukasa’s eyes narrowed as he finished his sentence.
'He killed him…' Gen held back even his own expressions, 'He killed this Senku…'
When he first met Tsukasa in this new world, he was kind, considerate, gentle to everyone in the Empire and even to the animals. He would ensure that every part of every animal killed was put to use, even the organs. For Gen to hear him say that. For Tsukasa to kill another human being… he got even more scared of him.
Gen started to doubt himself. He wondered if there really was someone who could take down the Strongest Primate High Schooler. To kill the "smartest" man alive, as he called this Senku.
But even so, the fact that Tsukasa had to send him, a mentalist… to make sure that Senku is alive.
There was no doubt. Senku is alive.
He finally understood what he had to do.
Gen enjoyed it. He enjoyed experimenting and toying with the human mind and the limitless possibilities of the human psyche. He mostly used it for his own benefit and gain, but that's what the world, the previous world, taught him. To him adults were easy picking, even more so than teenagers and children. He knew as one grows older, the ideals and beliefs, and biases a person has learned will stick longer and thus harder to change or remove. Gen knew of this and exploited it to his heart's content. So it was child's play for him to figure out what had occured in this laboratory.
He asked Tsukasa if he could stay a bit more to inspect the area. The man let him, and asked if he knew the way back.
Gen knew the way back.
When he realized that he was finally alone, he quickly observed the area. He looked at the pieces of the broken jars, the stains on the floor and at the walls, he saw the various broken tools nearby. He then rushed into the tree house and saw the same mess as the lab. Gen saw this as a laughable way to make it look like they got scared and escaped.
Smartest man alive? More like the world's worst crook if he had ever seen one.
He remembered Tsukasa’s expressions, the hatred in his words and the shakiness of it. That was also obvious. Tsukasa was scared. Very scared. He only knew of Tsukasa as a fearless man who would stare down other fighters bigger and stronger than he was, and took them down easily. For someone to induce such paranoia and fear in him...
He has to know. He has to know who this Senku person is.
He just has to!
After gathering what he can from the area, he went back to the Empire. He gave Tsukasa what he could deduce from it, and said that he and his companions that he too figured this out from the tracks, that they probably dashed at around southeast to where the Empire was.
Tsukasa was impressed by him. He mentioned that the two companions were Taiju and Yuzuriha.
Gen faked a shock, well to everyone it looked like a real shock. He knew some of the bigger and heavier footsteps belonged to a heavyweight like Taiju, and smaller, lighter footsteps belonged to a woman, Yuzuriha fits that description.
Tsukasa explained to him that they returned after he had subsequently killed Senku and buried him in that direction. Gen was right it was southeast to where they were, Hakone (or it would have used to be considering the lack of any buildings).
He also mentioned that they were Senku's best friends.
That's what stood out the most.
Gen wondered to himself as to why they were kept under surveillance. Now it made sense, Tsukasa was worried that they might turn on him eventually. Even with the power difference, there was an instilled fear that Senku would come back for them and have a scientific weapon that could be used to defeat him.
That's what the mentalist deduced at least.
So Taiju and Yuzuriha were… no are Senku's friends. He filed that important tidbit for later.
Tsukasa had given him information that was more valuable than even he thought.
He was also told of a blond haired, blue eyed girl that seemed to have no knowledge of science and had a very primitive way of thinking. He was (truly this time) shocked to hear that there is a possibility of a village of primitives in that area, and that Senku might have made contact with them if that was the case. So now he had a destination in mind.
Hakone. Around a two day walk from where they were now. Gen didn't particularly like the idea of walking so far and so long, but his desire to meet this Senku was what pushed him further.
Before he left, he asked Yuzuriha for some extra materials and a cutting tool. Part of him wanted to tell them that he was going to see Senku, just to gauge their reactions. He knew if they didn't react to what he expected it, then it was truly confirmed that Senku is alive.
But he held his tongue on that. He didn't want to risk then getting caught on this mess.
Gen himself haven't really decided on if this Senku really is the person he was looking for. If he was the mystery counter. All he knew was that, he was a threat to Tsukasa's ideal world.
The smartest man alive vs the strongest man alive.
A typical brain vs brawn...
His journey was long and painful, especially since he didn’t wear any shoes. Along the way he picked up many nightshade flowers and stored them into various hidden sacks underneath his clothes. He even found many berries and even some small animals he could use to make fake blood bags for his own protection, just in case everything went downhill for him. He knew when to expect the worst. After all, he made a living from expecting the worst in people and exploiting it.
His journey took way longer than two days. He was exhausted, yes, but every step further was one step closer to meeting this Senku. He thought it was worth it.
From what he knew about the positions of his shadows, he had deduced it was around noon. He walked further and further through the forest, and that's when he heard something, music. He heard music playing nearby, he walked closer to the source, and saw it, clear as day. A village, built on two small peninsulas connected by a bridge.
It was the primitive village that Tsukasa told him about. There were primitives living in this area.
And in front of it was…
Well to his surprise. It was a ramen stand.
Gen approached the stand closer then was quickly given a bowl of said ramen by a child wearing a melon mask over her head. He thought it was kind of cute.
He felt a pang of hunger as he took a whiff of the bowl on his hands. It was a crude version of ramen that he knew, but well, he supposed it was still ramen. So he took a bite.
Gen nearly gagged from the taste.
He remained very quiet despite the complete awfulness the dish had. He couldn’t even call this ramen. He heard this was foxtail millet ramen.
Once again he nearly gagged at the thought of foxtail. Foxtail, was what the noodles were made out of. He could feel the grainy texture and the bitter aftertaste of the ramen.
It was ositive-pay awful!
But he heard nothing but praises for this dish. Gen peered to see other people wearing similar clothes like the one the melon girl wore. It looked like they were almost inhaling the ramen. It was a complete consensus that it was the best thing they've ever had.
That's one other thing that hits Gen.
He sighs and misses something way more than ramen right now.
One of them quickly asked for seconds and Gen sighed and realized with the stereotypical glutton man. He supposed that in any kind of era there's always a glutton.
Then his attention quickly changed when he saw the man at the stand itself, putting the ramen together.
His hair stood out the most, literally. Even at the year 2019, he would have easily stood out. He wondered if it's dyed or if he used any hair products. Almost every bit of his hair stood upwards defying gravity. To Gen he looked like a walking giant leek or bok choy. Then when he turned sideways, that's when Gen finally saw his face. He looked sweaty and tired, but his face is full of eagerness and pride, that admittingly seemed contagious. The most noticeable features were the two jagged scars that lined and bent up from his forehead down to this eye line and just below the eyelid. The Mentalist instinctively touched his own scar.
He remembered the explanation Tsukasa gave him. That these scars are just a side effect of the depetrification process.
Gen remembered the day when he saw his reflection at the river and saw the scar running underneath his left eyelid, where it turned to shape his mouth then went straight down his chain and his neck. To him this was a reminder that he was petrified and awakened. Which meant, this man was…
“Are you the man who made this incredible food?” He heard a young girl approach the man with such eagerness and obvious intent of flirting, “the one called, Senku?”
Senku…
This green haired, prideful, obviously exhausted guy...
Is Senku?
Gen tried hard to cover his laughter. This was the man that Tsukasa, the strongest primate high school, was scared about? He looked physically weak. Everything about him was so lanky and skinny. It completed the giant walking vegetable set. Big green leaves and a nimble easily breakable stem.
He was….
'This was the man who wrote that date on the tree isn't it?'
He saw a familiar equation written on Senku’s outfit.
E=mc2
'Yeah… definitely the science nerd around here.' Gen chuckled internally, 'Who the hell writes that on their own clothes?!'
When the girl asked Senku what kind of girls he liked Senku simply answered this:
"A kind that would pump a ton of oxygen into my furnace"
Gen groaned internally at that answer
'And he's uninterested at romance. Like he's some sort of a Shonen protagonist…'
Gen managed to breathe and calmed himself in order to prevent getting noticed by the villagers. Senku had made the ramen for them. It was errible-tay. He could barely call this food.
'So this is what Tsukasa was talking about.' Gen just placed everything together in his head, 'This Senku is a scientist, through and through. He made the depetrification formula, he made this ramen, he has that silly equation on his clothes, he even has a furnace! I see why Tsukasa-chan fears him… but…'
Gen had to make sure. He wasn't going to just mingle with him and the primitives.
The blond villager girl whom Gen deduced as quite strong, and possibly the girl that Tsukasa ran into before, even expressed her displeasure at that answer. He wondered if she had some feelings for this Senku person.
The Mentalist admits that Senku is quite handsome. It was a shame to him that he isn't interested in romance. He would have loved to have gotten closer to him. But he supposed that he still has a job to do.
Well to everyone in the Empire of Might it was his job.
To Gen….
It was some assurance.
If this Senku is what he thought he was, that this Senku is the man that striked fear into Tsukasa's heart.
This handsome, nerdy, passionate man…
Might be the counter he was looking for.
Better strike while the iron's hot….
"Ah… this ramen is making me wickedly thirsty…" Gen admitted to himself, out loud for everyone else to hear. "A cola, would be great…"
And with that, Gen had Senku's undivided attention.
The Mentalist then went to work, fully analyzing this Senku to his heart's content.
Little that he knew what would happen later that within the past 3700+ years of his life, would change for the better.
'This is worth it…'

The Devil’s Lullaby
a short story
“Having trouble sleeping?"
Yes. I wouldn't be in front of my television at 1 am otherwise, lifelessly watching the infomercials. The man was grinning back at me almost manically, as if he knew it well, as if I, a bored insomniac, personally checked all of his boxes for a target audience.
"The nights too loud in the big city? Do you ever just want to move away for a good night's sleep?"
Again, yes. As a country mouse, I had a hard time dealing with the big city racket that never ceased. Even now, I could hear police sirens a few blocks away and there was a pack of street cats shrieking in the back alley right beneath my window. Were they fighting? Mating? Who knew.
"Look no further for a solution to your problems." The man never stopped grinning. I wasn't even sure if he blinked the whole time his face had been the centerpiece of my TV screen. Distractingly white teeth posing little to no contrast in his smooth white skin, obviously heavily covered in makeup, and bleached blonde hair. Even his eyes, strikingly pale blue, melted softly with his whole appearance.
Watching him, I realized he never even introduced himself. As an insomniac who recreationally spent his nights in front of infomercials, I knew for a fact that the over-enthusiastic sellers usually introduced themselves with ridiculous names before they began to sell their product. I had no name that I could assign to this man. He was as enigmatic as the rest of this slow-paced commercial.
"Presenting now, The Lullaby," the man announced, his voice even, his grin ever-present. Still, not one blink. "A hypnotic phone line that will help you get the peaceful sleep you deserve."
Hypnosis? Ha! No wonder the guy was being so willfully mysterious. He did remind me of a creepy magician when I really thought about it. But, seriously. Hypnosis? And I thought I'd seen the most bizarre infomercial last week when someone had tried to convince their sleepless public to buy flavored tampons. To make you ladies more desirable before intercourse, the sleazy man had said, clearly without any sort of knowledge what tampons were originally designed for. Now, that one took the cake! Hilariously stupid, and I was still cackling at it as I went to sleep that night. But hypnosis? It was equally ridiculous, but in a much sadder way. Hadn't all those pathetic psychics and magicians gone out of business already? I truly thought these sorts of scams were over for good.
The man was still talking.
"Call now, and you will be lulled to sleep by one of our hypnosis professionals at a discounted price," the man uttered the magic words every infomercial salesman knew by heart. The offer that would come would be an illusion of a great price that convinced naive people to spend their money.
“For just twelve cents an hour, you will find the sleep you have been craving,” the man continued with his wickedly velvet grin, and I actually did a double-take. Twelve cents an hour? That didn’t seem like a lot. They were either aiming to whisper some nonsense into the poor suckers’ ears for the entire night, or they were not even serious about what they were scamming. Or they were popular enough to afford it, which was just ludicrous for me to think about.
One way or another, as I watched the red-colored phone number blink beneath the man’s chin on the screen, my bored sleepless mind was filled with one stupid idea – twelve cents per one hour seemed like an awfully small amount of money to spend at one in the morning when sleep still evaded me.
Before I could talk myself out of it, I picked up my phone and dialed the number. A soft-spoken woman answered almost immediately.
“The Lullaby Hypnosis center, how can I help you?”
“Uh, I saw the infomercial, I would like to try out this… thing.”
“Certainly,” the woman said. “Let me put you through to our hypnotizer.”
Their hypnotizer. Sure. That sounded credible. I was only half afraid that these people could somehow get my personal information, but I pushed that thought aside. They might have been selling nonsense, but they were only after the money they could make. Maybe they were so sure in their hypnosis being successful that they wanted to lure people in with the low price and get them hooked. Yes, that was it. There was no harm in trying it out. I would at least get a laugh out of it.
“Hello and welcome,” a man’s voice greeted me, as velvety and pleasant as the one on the infomercial. I had to assume it was the same guy. To be honest, I would have been disappointed if it hadn't been. “Welcome to the first step to getting your good night’s sleep.”
“Hi,” I said lamely. I didn’t know what I should say. He didn’t introduce himself, so I decided no to do it, either. The more anonymous this exchange was, the better. “So, how does this work?”
“Settle in your seat,” the man said. After a pause, he added, “or in your bed, wherever you are. Close your eyes and take a deep breath.”
I followed his instruction, already regretting that I had spent twelve whole cents of this. It wasn’t even amusing, just a waste of time. But I still had fifty-nine minutes to go, so I decided to at least get my money’s worth. I leaned back on my sofa and closed my eyes. I took one deep breath and exhaled, then took another.
“Don’t be so hasty,” the man said into my ear. “I only told you to take one breath.”
“Then don’t take so much time with your instructions,” I grumbled back. The late hour was making me irritable. The man chuckled.
“Alright. Take one breath. Slow, as slow as you can, and listen to my voice as I pull your very soul away from your home’s distractions and into the land of dreams.”
I breathed in shallowly, dragging my inhale for as long as I could.
“Good, good. Now, hold your breath as I count down from ten,” the man said the second my lungs filled up, as if he could hear my own breathing. I held my breath.
“Ten.”
I heard the commercial still playing on the television, seemingly on a loop. These people really bought many a minute to scam as many morons as possible.
“Nine.”
Morons like me, it would appear.
“Eight.”
His counting was quite slow. Maybe he was aiming at the lack of oxygen knocking me out and call the hypnosis successful later on.
“Seven.”
There was a sound, a sort of music, in the background of his voice. A steady, bewildering tune. I began to focus on it, tried to make out what exactly it was.
“Six.”
The sounds from the street began drowning out. Soon enough, I could only hear the television, the soft music, and the man counting down.
“Five.”
Maybe this hypnosis thing was actually working, as reluctant as I was to admit it. I could feel myself relaxing.
“Four.”
I blinked my eyes open for a second, restless in anticipation, but quickly closed them again. I did not want to lose the serenity.
“Three.”
The television was beginning to lose its volume, too. Soon enough, only the music and the man’s voice on the phone filled my ears.
“Two.”
My chest was beginning to hurt from the breath I was holding it.
“One. As you exhale, imagine blowing your thoughts, a variety of abstract shapes and colors, out of yourself into the space around you. Imagine losing yourself inside the colors.”
I exhaled and I could almost see it. The air I breathed out almost smelled sweeter, and the darkness behind my eyelids seemed more colorful than before. The guy really knew how to manipulate my imagination.
“Now, as you breathe in again, try to capture the thoughts you let out, but only the ones that regard your personal fantasy. Your favorite dream.”
I breathed in and, my god, I could swear the air was fresher than it had ever been since I had moved into the city. It tasted like home, the woods by my hometown. The darkness was colored blue and my chest felt warm with endearment.
“Do you have your paradise yet? Are you entering your favorite dream?”
“Yes,” I answered, astounded. There was no image before me that I could hang onto, and yet, I felt at home, I felt happy.
“Let relaxation flow through you,” the man continued, dragging his every word. “Let it touch the very core of your soul.”
I could feel it, almost like a hand, traveling through me and reaching for something abstract deep inside of me. I could feel the pleasant warmth spread from inside, building up until it almost felt hot, almost scorching.
“Now, you may breathe out again.”
Wait, was I holding in the breath this whole time? No wonder my chest was burning, it was a relief to let the air out of my lungs.
“With your next breath, let even more pleasantries into your mind. Seek them out in the world around you,” the man said. I breathed it, slowly and impatiently, craving that hot, floating feeling from before.
“Now, as you hold your breath, listen very closely to my voice,” the man said. “Let it enter your mind and body with that fresh intake of air. Let me right into your soul.”
The music behind him grew louder, almost as if it wasn’t coming just from the phone anymore. No. It was coming from inside the room. It didn’t matter, though. Not anymore. In the state of relaxation, I listened to the man’s voice as he continued to speak, this time in a language I did not understand. It did not matter, though. I welcomed the foreign words as they enveloped me and seeped through my skin, leaving pleasant goosebumps on the surface. I could feel my entire body tingling, trembling, and growing hotter, hotter, hotter.
“That’s it, that’s it,” the man said, louder, outside of the phone line. It startled me for a moment, averted my focus from relaxation. I opened my eyes and looked before me.
My phone was no longer in my hand. It must have fallen to the floor, but I could not move to even see it. The music and the voice, slowly chanting unknown words and phrases, were all around me as if they were embroidered into the empty space around me.
The commercial was still playing. It wasn't a loop anymore, I realized blearily. No, the man stopped trying to sell me hypnosis for twelve cents an hour. He was the one talking to me, his lips moving along with the mysterious chant that surrounded me and swallowed me whole. When he saw me staring back at him, he grinned and, though his lips stopped moving, the chanting continued in ominous repetition.
“So good. You are so good,” he told me, his grin far too wide for his face suddenly. “I can feel your soul, shining and burning. I can touch its surface, it is already mine.”
He leaned forward and his face came out of the TV screen, flickering into reality. His lips opened wider, showing sharp teeth as his eyes glimmered with a red hue. It terrified me and I tried to move, jump, anything to get away from what was happening.
But I couldn’t even take another breath.
“You are too far gone,” the man, or the devil, told me. “Under my control. You cannot even blink, can you?”
I couldn’t. I couldn’t even close my eyes to escape his face. I couldn’t open my mouth to scream. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t breathe.
Blood boiling with panic, lungs screaming for relief, and the devil laughed with menace. He reached out with one hand, stretching it out far from the screen as if he wanted to grab me. A sharp pain went through me when he closed his claws into a fist and I knew that he got what he had come for. My soul. My very soul was being torn from my body and surrendered to the devil himself.
A sharp light shot out from my core and the pain slowly subsided, though never ceased. I still couldn’t breathe.
The devil’s arm and wicked face returned to the inside of the TV screen. He had what he wanted and I was left with nothing.
Helpless and alone, I felt myself losing consciousness, losing any life left in me. My eyelids slowly closed, my head dropped back. The world came to a stop. I felt like I was falling asleep.
“Thank you for calling the Devil’s Lullaby. Enjoy your final rest.”

Sims 4 Challenge: A Traveler’s Tale
Sims 4: A Traveler’s Tales
Having recently bought the sims 4 Jungle Adventures, I decided to create a new sim challenge, focusing around storytelling. I have written a short description on the four phrases you must face. This challenge allows you to play creatively, making you as the player imagination go crazy. I have also set goals for you but your more than welcome to adjust them to fit your needs/desires.
This is my first challenge I have ever created, so hopefully this is at a good standard and can keep you and the audience intrigued. I am sorry if there are many grammar/spelling mistakes and i hope that you can enjoy the challenge as much as i enjoyed writing it.
Here are a few beginning guides before getting into the challenge:
Setting Up:
Two Characters: Allowed To Choose Any Gender.
One or both must have the archaeology lifetime ambition.
Likely to have a romantic relationship but can also be just friendship.
Both much have an interest within the archeology skill.
Both sims can live together to make the challenge easier to control.
Allowed to have small-side jobs as savings.
Can create families for the characters but isn’t required as they can be orphans. Allow for as much creativity as possible.
Allowed to have archeology job but if you want a challenge do it as a hobby based job ( Modded career v JA).
( Add additional notes later on).
Create-a-Sim:
Sims must have either ambition/bookworm trait, all other traits can be chosen by player. Must be teenager for you to be able to develop character skills. Phrase One (Teenage-hood)
Growing up, our character grew a passion for studying history, learning artefacts and focusing in myths. Wanting to grow up as explorer/ archeologist. They stayed behind during their study time researching the lost cities of the Simlands, growing more ambition to get away from Windenburg and to find as many lost artefacts and cities as possible.
Needed to progress to the next stage:
Gain Level 4 of the archaeology skill . Make the main sims close friends/best friends
Make sims go to the museum and read archeology book to gain skill
Must live in Windenburg
Optional:
Have a part-time job to help out in adulthood towards housing or adventures:
( Chosen path of an Orphan ):Having sims living together via care home or living on the streets (Joint savings)
( Living with families ): Make the sims plan on living together when they reach adulthood (Separate savings)
Have the sims form a romantic relationship with each other
Phrase Two ( Teenager turning into Young Adult )
Almost turning into a young adults, you must start planning for your futures, where are you gonna stay, how much money have you got, when should we just pack our bags to leave. So many questions which needed to be answered before turning a Young Adult. Well heres your chance, in this phrase you move into your apartment with you other sim ( if haven’t already), the cheaper one can keep you safe from harm whereas living in style can get you status. This is where your adventure begins and only you can decide on where it takes you.
Needed to progress to the next stage:
Move into your apartment ( If chosen orphan path must live in the cheaper part of San Myshuno since the government given you a place to stay for free only thing required is it need the repair trait on it and for you to pay your bills on time ) .
Move into your apartment ( If chosen living with families path you can choose wherever you would like to live depending on the upbringing of your characters.. again you can cheat to move into the apartment but you are allow to play for it realistically ) .
Optional:
Get yourself a pet but know having a pet brings a lot or responsibilities and setbacks.
Don’t allow your apartment to be fully decorated and allow crates and decorate over time, new artefacts new set out.
Can have roommates within your apartment but have the mod install as you cannot control them and they must been great friends.
Phrase Three ( Young Adult )
Finally turning into a young adult, you can now start your adventure, with all the money you have, you call your pal to get you to your destination. Arriving, you are placed with the issue of living, are you gonna stay in a Villa or live in the wildnesses with tents. Well that for you to decide. From here an out your on your own, live and chose the actions you must take but be aware, who knows who would be after you.
Needed to complete stage:
Before heading for your adventure make sure your archeology skill is lv 6 onwards .
Have the archeology table .
Have a decent skill within athletic, you’ll need it in order to climb all those rocks to achieve your artefacts.
Max your archeology skill and gain a high skill level for all skills needed for your adventure.
Max you lifetime goal ( can continue into phrase four )
Optional:
Create or personalise a museum for your artefacts if you would want them to be displayed to the world.
Create villains and make the challenge for the artefact challenging
Phrase Four ( Final Stage )
This begins after you finally find the lost artefact. This can lead to an wholes new story whether or not you would want to follow this path, this is entirely optional.
Natural Ending: Finding the artefact your story ends, I suppose, time to relax and keep your feet up, finding the artefact must leave you for a life of luxury or a life of wanting more adventure. Our characters matures, they must decide to live a normal life or continue the life of exploring.
If wanting to continue the life of exploring would you want to do it legitimacy  or under the law just like before.
If living a normal life, where will their life leave, will they have children, get a family, live in a life or crime or a normal job. Only time can tell. Will they use the money from their adventure to start their life or give them up for local museums under a anonymous name, keeping their identity safe.
Supernatural Beginnings: After finding the artefact, they find a whole new side to the whole, they only thought were myths.
Vampires, are they really real, living among us, this needs to be investigated and only we know, this must stay a secret between the only companions they stand beside, if the whole world find out, both will be in danger.Packing their luggage, they find a hidden town call Forgotten Hollow, will they be able to disguise themselves or will they be caught.
Will one go alone whilst the other stay in San Myshuno and investigate and mail their progress of studying vampires to the other. Only you can decide the fate of the sims and decide on becoming a Vampire Hunter or keeping them safe and far away from the real world.
The two endings can be how you choose to decide with only the supernatural beginning having a few bunch of set targets for your sims to decide.
If wanting to play the natural ending and wanting to continue playing alongside the Jungle Adventure pack, you can use the career mod Archeology Career to make you sims appear to actually work legitimacy but you can continue playing legitimacy without the mod but I would suggest getting it as the under the radar path would not be known as a career only as a hobby.
If wanting to leave the adventure life behind, you have full range of what you can do for your characters with no limits.
If wanting to continue the story but in the supernatural world there are a few steps you need to complete this challenge but overall you can let your creative minds allow the story to progress in which ever way you like: If only having one sim go to Forgotten Hollow:
The sim staying behind in San Myshuno must have max skill in the Vampire skill ( you can cheat the skill in if you like ) as they are studying constantly about the life form.
The sim going to Forgotten Hollow must have a level 4.
If both sims going to to Forgotten Hollow:
Make sure that both sims levels of the vampire skill is level 6.
From then on out, you as the player can decide on the rest of the story which this can bring. However, if you would want me to add additional information/ requirements for this part for the challenge. I would be more than welcome to add additional requirements and have an more in-depth aspect into this ending.
As well, I would love for you to tag me in your version of this challenge and seeing the progress you make. Tag them under the #ts4travelertale
Goodluck, and i hope you all have a great day !!

Worm Liveblog #59
UPDATE 59: Superpowers in a Can
Last time Taylor, Lisa and the rest of the group found the person they had to rescue. Cheers! Unfortunately, it seems he’s not here unwillingly, which is...a problem, to say the least. Also, they rescued one of Taylor’s former schoolmates – unnamed and just tagging along. As if things weren’t troublesome enough, Skidmark made his big appearance, announcing there’d be a big brawl and the five winners would receive a big prize: superpowers! Let’s continue, things are going to get ugly in here.
“Is he for real?” I looked to Lisa for an answer.  “Can they do that?”
“Don’t think he’s lying.”
He’s not lying. I knew this ‘superpowers in a can’ thing sounded familiar! It’s what’s happening with the Case 63 people, like I had thought last time. It also is where Coil got his powers – maybe. Won’t lie, if a single one of these containers is so expensive Coil is still paying for it, it must be incredibly expensive, and now this third-rate villain has five of those. Whoever they stole it from is going to get fired from whatever laboratory these powers in a can came from.
It didn’t take long for people to get fired up about the thought of getting some of those neat powers – if they’re lucky they’ll be neat. Not all powers are a fun time, that has been made very clear after ten arcs and half. Some people band together to fight, those foolish enough to trust a complete stranger find themselves betrayed. People on the sidelines throw debris and trash into the ring, pelting the fighters. This is a pretty good description of a pandemonium, how are five people going to be left standing in the end? Heck, I bet when five people are left, three are going to jump into the ring, knock them out, and so on until there simply aren’t more people to jump in.
“We should go,” Lisa said.  She turned to Jaw and ordered, “Bring the boy.”
Hm. On one hand, they’re leaving without doing anything about the stolen vials of superpowers other than having information those were being given away, they won’t ever know who gets them. On the other hand, this is a dangerous situation and they risk a lot by staying for longer. I suppose...leaving has more pros than cons, yeah. The knowledge the Merchants are getting more capes may be enough for them to take measures, and Lisa can find out more later, anyway.
Haul Bryce, Jaw, it’s time to scram! Okay, hm, let’s see, how things can get difficult because this is just the start of this chapter, and who knows how much arc is still left. Obviously the most likely problem is that Bryce may fight back, given he’s not here unwillingly, but only one kid against four trained soldiers is a very one-sided fight. Perhaps other Merchants would fight if they notice Bryce is being taken away?
...
...no, they won’t, what with the fight and the six-feet-under level of empathy this crowd has. Bryce could get hung from the rafters by these soldiers and almost nobody would even turn their heads to look. Could it be that Skidmark or someone else will somehow notice there are enemy villains in the mall? I suppose if somehow Taylor or Lisa slip up that’s a possibility, but it’d be difficult for Lisa to make her power noticeable, and I trust Taylor would be as careful as possible while she’s here.
...I can’t think of other scenarios. I’m not very imaginative when it’s about picturing how things can go wrong.
Oh, goodie, someone has a gun in here. Things are going to get bloody in here very soon. Skidmark is having a lot of fun watching the chaos, nobody’s paying attention to Bryce, although his girlfriend is following the group for a bit before she runs calling for her mom and some guy named Thomas. Did they get dragged into the fight unwillingly, perhaps? Or willingly?
We collectively backed out of the way, but Bryce had other intentions.  The boy wrenched out of Jaw’s grip and threw his shoulder into the small of Senegal’s back.  The man was only barely able to keep from stumbling forward into the charging Merchants, but with his attention elsewhere, Bryce managed to slip past.
Oh my god, he actually managed to do that. I know, Taylor’s group was trying to get out and they were caught off-guard by a nearby fight two other crowds were having, and I know they got pushed into one of those crowds and it’s difficult to hold onto someone in those circumstances, but still...I can’t believe this, Bryce managed to slip away from a few trained elite soldiers and ran away, this untrained teenager slipped away from all them. Goodness gracious, this is a secret they’ll carry with them to the grave.
Okay, finding him again isn’t difficult, despite the thick crowd. He’s following his girlfriend, and his girlfriend went to see her mom and this Thomas guy – the man with the scar on his lips. So that’s the guy Sierra had mentioned, the one that attacked an innocent person with a broken bottle and sent him to the hospital...better be careful with this one, then.
Well...forget the possibility of getting out of here without getting involved into the brawl, Bryce and company just went into the ring and are in middle of it all. Nothing to be done than think of a plan. Using bugs is out of the question, says Lisa. Skidmark would be on the hunt for any unfamiliar people in here, and even if they don’t catch Taylor and the rest, they may target innocent people. Yeah, I doubt Skidmark or anyone here knows every single Merchant by sight, especially the new ones.
The big problem I see here is that once you get in the ring, it’s going to be very hard to get out. Skidmark’s power pushes everything to the center, they’d have to get past a wide border and that’s going to be impossible as long as that power is active. Since Skidmark is watching, I suppose it’d be unlikely he wouldn’t see someone managing to pass through that. Hm. Tough conundrum, this is.
Unnamed Collateral Rescued gets a name! Her name is Charlotte. Welcome to the world of Worm, Charlotte, you’re lucky if you get away from this mess uninjured. Her suggestion is to run, unaware Taylor and pals had come here specifically to get Bryce back. Hm....perhaps one of the soldiers could escort Charlotte out while everyone else tries to think of a plan? Charlotte wouldn’t be safe, but she at least would have a chance of running away.
What were our options.  Using Lisa’s power?  I wasn’t sure how it applied here.  If she had a way of addressing the audience, maybe there was something she could say to turn the tide, or turn them against their leaders… but the only way to do that would be to get the microphone Skidmark had.
I doubt that’d have worked, anyway. How does that saying go, again? The one about a crowd’s IQ being directly opposite to its size, or something like that? That’d apply here. Peer pressure is a powerful tool, too. Even if Lisa dropped a verbal bombshell here, it’s unlikely absolutely everyone would turn against Skidmark. Anyone who continues loyal may force others to do the same, and that’s going to devolve into further strife. Dealing with that and with an irate Skidmark is...something to be avoided, I’d say.
There are way too many people for the trained soldiers to fight, so that’s not going to work. The only option there may be is to wait and see what happens, wait for the fight to end so they finally can go retrieve Bryce.
“Sticking around also means we can get more info on what Skidmark’s got in those vials and where he got them.”
Good thing Lisa is here, then. I doubt Skidmark or anyone is going to tell where they got them, but at least by waiting maybe they’ll see who gets the powers. Do you know what’d be quite the plot development for this arc? That Bryce somehow earns one of those. Now that he is in the ring, there is a possibility that’ll happen, but that’d require Bryce to be one of the last five standing.
And if he isn’t one of the last five standing...well...better hope Sierra doesn’t mind her brother returning with a lot of physical trauma. Anyway, time to wait.
Waiting doesn’t mean they have an easy time, though. A lot of people come to them to fight, simply because they were there. While the soldiers are well-trained and they make a formation to keep the squishier and less combat-experienced people in the center of the group, it’s not a perfect strategy because, well, the foes can see very well what this formation is all about. Really, if it hadn’t been for Taylor’s knives, things could have been ugly. Or...uglier, because things are plenty ugly right now!
I’ll say, it must be rather annoying to know you could fight back with superpowers but you can’t do it. Stoically resisting bullies is one thing, but this situation is completely different, more...primal. I wonder how many times Taylor wanted to be all ‘screw this’ and send a bunch of wasps on people to keep them away.
Taylor is still defending and trying to fight back when something unusual starts happening.
And I was somewhere else.  It was like remembering something profound that I’d forgotten.  I’d seen this before.
Huge creatures filled my perception.
...well that sure is a change of scene. One moment she’s about to defend herself, the next moment she’s gazing at creatures of the size of planets. I’m certain this is what Miss Militia had seen when she received her powers, and Taylor here sees this felt like she was remembering something she had forgotten. She must have seen this before. Dang, it’s a shame Miss Militia may never find out someone else knows what she saw.
I noticed something that seems important, though: creatures. In plural, as in more than one. Taylor sees two, Miss Militia had seen only one. Also, Miss Militia had seen a creature dying. Taylor is seeing them very much alive. That has to be significant. Miss Militia must have had her trigger event years before Taylor had hers, so it’s not like they both saw the same creature. Maybe what Taylor sees now isn’t like a memory, but something that’s happening right now? In some sort of...weird metaphysical way?
...does this mean Taylor is having a second trigger event, here and now? Boy that’d be quite the unexpected development!
Some distant part of me realized I’d seen something similar to that folding and unfolding once, in a much simpler form.  A tesseract, a fourth dimensional analogue to the cube.
Tumblr media
Trippy. I can’t even begin to imagine how what Taylor is seeing is akin to this, but it must feel really trippy.
Flakes are falling off these creatures, as if they were falling apart. So it isn’t something that happens only when they’re dying? I’m feeling so lost right now, honestly. This is surreal.
The, uh...let’s call it vision...the vision lasts only for a moment, Taylor is brought back to reality by pain, she was successfully attacked. Someone behind her tries to take her away from danger even if it’s a little bit, but it doesn’t seem to work very well. Lisa may be injured; she’s slumped over with Brooks holding her. Minor and Jaw are holding their ground well, but they’re too busy with their combatants to do much to help Taylor. Senegal is the one closest to Taylor, and he’s actually doing well, but who knows for how much longer he’ll be able to keep the Merchants at bay. All in all, it seems the more time passes, the less likely it is Taylor and the rest of the group will be okay.
The situation has turned so bad Taylor is using her power to try to know exactly what’s going on around her. Not enough bugs to attract undue attention, but there’s lice and flies around here. Pleasant, ain’t it? Ugh. But hey, bugs are bugs and that’s all that matters. She’s getting the information she wanted.
That vision must have left Taylor really disoriented, she’s not thinking straight, and it’s not like she can take a moment to try to evaluate the situation. Her actions make one of her attackers fall on her, Charlotte is right behind her, Senegal is trying to keep people at bay. Opening her eyes make Taylor feel very sick.
Something’s happening! There’s a bright light coming from the stage. Skidmark and the rest of the Merchants capes were slumped over, as if something had happened to them. They recover quickly. In the ring, well...
“Seems like one of you assdrips just earned his stripes,” he cackled.
Assdrips?! I cringed so hard, that’s one of the most infantile insults I have—okay, I’ll move on before groan aloud. Anyway, what’s happening in the stage is that someone is having a trigger event! Someone gained powers, and it doesn’t seem like it was thanks to the vials of powers. Hmmm...in that case, could it be that what Taylor saw was like a prelude? Quick foreshadowing this was going to happen, instead of a vision of the past from when she got her power?
The kid, who definitely isn’t Bryce because if it was then Taylor or someone else would have said something, seems to have quite the violent power.
The man charged, and the boy tried a third time.  The blast intersected the man, and when it faded, the man’s upper arm, forearm, elbow, and the right side of his torso and hip were gone.  Blood gushed from the area where his flesh had been carved away by the light, and his dismembered hand dropped to his feet.
I don’t remember Faultline’s intermission clearly enough to be certain about this, but she was trying to do something like this, wasn’t she? Trying to bypass the Manton effect to be able to do something similar to that to organic matter. Well...this new cape here managed to do it in like a minute after the trigger event. Sounds like this new kid here can be really dangerous, especially if he learns to control this power effectively.
But what had happened to Skidmark’s group, Tattletale and I?  I could vaguely remember something, thought about trying to put it into words, as if describing it could help call it to mind in a way that I could describe it, but they disappeared as I reached for them.
Oh, guess Miss Militia won’t ever hear about this, then. Skitter may not even be able to talk about this with Tattletale. It’s interesting, though, looks like it affected all the capes in the area. Everyone must have had the same vision. I really think it was an indication the trigger event was happening. I wonder if this happens every time there’s a trigger event, all the capes nearby get that sort of vision and they feel weak?
Charlotte added two and two and deduced Taylor’s secret. Suddenly all the capes were affected by...something, and Taylor was affected by something. Not hard to deduce, yeah. At least the exact situation is still a secret, Charlotte can’t know Taylor is a villain or that she is Skitter, right?
Lisa’s having trouble recovering, maybe because of the nature of her power. Could it be her mind is unconsciously trying to understand what she saw?
“They’re like viruses,” she said.  Her voice was thin, as if she were talking to herself.  “And babies.  And gods. All at the same time.”
I had never read such a confusing description of a creature ever before. Are all of those things similar in any way? I can’t seem to make a connection of what kind of...being those creatures are, nor what their purpose is.
Taylor manages to get Lisa out of her delirium, and once Charlotte is the one taking care of Lisa, Taylor joins the soldiers in keeping people at bay. Awesome! Striking non-lethal spots, as usual, I’d guess, and doing that with her eyes closed. She’s relying on her bugs to know what’s going on. Now that the worst part of the onslaught is over, things are starting to look better now!
You know, among all this, the thought that Bryce may have been badly injured in that new cape’s trigger event never crossed my mind until now. Oh dear...I hope he’s okay.
There’s not even time to fight anyone before Skidmark orders everyone to stop whatever they’re doing. The five remaining people have been decided! Somehow. I underestimated Skidmark’s control over the crowd’s rowdy demeanor, he just had to yell stop and they stopped after a minute or so. Now there are five, six people left in the ring, if you count the kid with the new superpower.
The new kid still doesn’t control his power very well.
A flash of light marked another uncontrolled use of the new cape’s power.  It struck close to the ground, removing the leg of someone who lay unconscious or dead on the ground, but it left the ground perfectly intact.  Why? When it consumed clothing and flesh but not the building itself?
Well that’s going to be dangerous to counter. Kind of a reverse Faultline, in some vague way, affecting organic matter and leaving inorganic matter intact.
The new kid limps to Skidmark, welcomed into the Merchants’ inner circle, and is told to get a name. Parahumans need names, after all. Eraser is discarded, so Skidmark tells him his new name is—oh you have got to be kidding me.
“Scrub!” Skidmark shouted, and the crowd roared.
How in the hell was Scrub better than Eraser?  In what insane reality?
I should have guessed the guy who thought Skidmark was a good name to have would be awful at giving names.
Since – I hate this name – Scrub has powers, he’s given the liberty of choosing to who he’s giving the vial of superpower. He calls two pals forward and asks if he can give the vial to both.
Skidmark chuckled, and it was a nasty sound with very little humor to it.  “No, no.  You definitely don’t want to do that.  Pick one.”
When I first read this I felt something was off. I wasn’t sure what it was, but after rereading it I think I have pinpointed it. How does Skidmark know it’d be a bad idea to share the contents of that vial? I doubt there were instructions with the vials or something like that. Maybe they weren’t really stolen? Maybe the Merchants are the ones fabricating it or have direct ties to whoever fabricated it, as unlikely as that sounds. That could be the reason for him to know about this.
Apparently Scrub’s power doesn’t get rid of only organic matter, it’s also erasing rubble and metal beams. That’s...inconsistent. I may be thinking too much about something that may not even matter, but maybe the power focuses on organic matter if there’s some, destroying it and not leaving enough energy or power or whatever to destroy the inorganic matter. With no organic matter, then it just...erases whatever it hits. Something like that, perhaps?
Once Scrub rewards the friend who tried to help him when he got into the ring by accident, Taylor and Lisa judge it may be time to leave. Without Bryce? That’s a problem, but yeah, Taylor feels there’s company coming, and since they don’t want to get involved in a fight, they have to leave now. Good thing there’s no deadline to rescue Bryce.
Oh, she knows who exactly is here!
Newter was here, and the rest of Faultline’s crew.
I should have guessed they’d be here. The vials, the relation to the Cases 53...yeah, of course Faultline would take an interest in this. How did they even know the Merchants had superpowers in a can? Something’s going on and I want to find out more.
They didn’t even have time to try to escape before the exits were literally erased, and not by Scrub. This mall is now sealed. Nothing inside will escape, and now Taylor and the rest have no choice but stay while Faultline enters the scene. Will Taylor have to use her power? Maybe she will.
That’ll be for next time, though.

Wonder Woman Spoilers/Thoughts
I enjoyed Wonder Woman. But the more I think about it, the more I have some issues with the story. I really wish we could have a moratorium on "there is something about this hero that the hero dare not know because of X but everyone else around them does." Or "there is this secret about the hero that we can't tell them for their own good." I remember the hints of that in the first Amazing Spider-Man trailer and I was like "sweet Jesus, no." (I was glad when I watched that movie that that subplot seemed to have not made it past the cutting room floor, but it returned with a vengeance in the sequel.) When I saw hints of that in the Wonder Woman trailer, I was like, "Whyyyyy? She is WONDER WOMAN! Whatever it is, she can take it! I guarantee it!" The thing is, when they do that sort of thing, I can very rarely think of a time when they were RIGHT to keep that secret. When keeping it actually was for the best. For example, in this movie, her mom says (like four times) "the more she knows, the quicker he will find her." Now, when I was watching, I was thinking of Voldemort, that he somehow knew when people said his name so IF Ares worked like that, then sure, when Diana was a wee sprout of a thing, maaaaaybe gently sort of ease her into this reality so he doesn't find her before she is ready. But by the time she left, she was kicking ass and taking names, and maybe Hippolyta didn't WANT that future for her daughter (which I will buy as why she didn't seem to want her daughter to EVER know how to fight, even though had Ares found them first and she didn't, that would have been Game Over for Diana before she could so much as blink. But she was a mom who truly loved her daughter, so I could see that, while misguided, she probably thought "if I don't teach her, it will never happen" - because the odds of Ares just finding them would be pretty low and Diana wouldn't ever leave). But not knowing the truth really did put her daughter at a disadvantage in the fight, and it was a disadvantage that she didn't need to be in. So instead of being like "there is so much you don't know" when Diana left, she should have been like "ummmm...right. Quick sec. Since you're doing this and I can't stop you...there really is something you should know. You'll have questions I don't have time to answer. Sorry. But...here it is because you'll need to know." The reason it bothers me is that after saying (several times), "The more she knows, the quicker he'll find her" ... her knowledge of lack thereof did squat to prevent him from finding her. She was in man's world for like FIVE MINUTES and he found her. Well, to be more accurate...she found him. I mean, she didn't know who he was, but she walked right into the room where he was in a way guaranteed to draw his attention (though that wasn't her intent). And maybe it took until the bar scene for him to be 100% sure she was who he probably suspected from the start, but he sure as hell knew in that moment if he didn't before. So Diana, who was still in the dark about herself? Was in no way protected by not knowing the truth at that point. Hero stories keep doing this thing where "the hero cannot know the truth about themselves because of X!" And that's fine, I suppose, if the moment they find out the truth, X comes to pass, or if not knowing the truth in some way DOES keep them safe somehow. But knowing...not knowing...had no bearing on Diana's story. It didn't make Ares find her quicker. Sure, maybe she would have left to find him sooner if she'd known, but at the point she was about to leave and her mom knew it, there was certainly no reason at that moment for her to not know. Hell, she could have handed a daughter a letter she wrote that she hoped never to give her but, similar to the sword, "I wrote this years ago so that when the time came to give this to you because you needed to know this, you would." Or, if you want it to be a surprise to Diana so it is one for the audience, have everyone totally believe the story Diana was told (when certainly at least two Amazons knew the truth, if not all of them except for Diana). But have Ares reveal to Diana that Zeus was more sly than they expected and the godkiller wasn't what they were all - including Hippolyta - led to believe. I dunno. That part of the story really frustrated me. Because you have this hero who the whole time is kept in the dark about herself (and I didn't get the impression for certain that everyone else was in the dark with her, so she was possibly if not likely the only one not in the know). That withheld information did ZIP to actually keep Ares from finding her - which was the reason she wasn't told. And not knowing meant she was caught off-guard and confused in a final battle when she really didn't have to be. And she's WONDER WOMAN. She could take it! Stop keeping heroes in the dark for "mysterious" (sometimes stupid) justifications, particularly if those justifications then do not even remotely play out! (Another thought on the subject of Ares, though less irksome...Ares, sit your ass down. Either you're to blame for this, in which case, you aren't dead at the end since I know for a fact there were some pretty significant wars after WWI. Or humanity has this in our nature, in which case, we got this. We don't need you. You go find a beach somewhere and wait, because you're immortal and you're pretty sure us exterminating ourselves is inevitable, and there's so reason to stick your neck out when we got this handled all on our own. Stop being a drama queen, because all you're asking for is a Wonder Woman beat down you could have avoided if you'd just taken a nap or something.) So the more I think about it, I DO have some issues with the story. They are not issues exclusive to the Wonder Woman movie; more like a trend I've noticed and been annoyed by increasingly since Amazing Spider-Man hinted in the trailer "the spider biting you was no accident! You were chosen for this! But you cannot know!" It's a freaking spider biting a kid in a lab. Not everything has to be a conspiracy, not every hero has to have this shadowy destiny that they alone cannot know. SOMETIMES SPIDERS JUST BITE RANDOM PEOPLE IN LABS AND THOSE PEOPLE THEN HAVE TO FIGURE OUT WHO THEY WANT TO BE. However. That tangent aside. I ALSO keep coming back to just how likable GG and CP were, individually and together. (And I'm just now realizing the stars of Wonder Woman have the same initials as the stars of Flash. No way THAT will cause confusion in future on my dash.) I keep thinking how delightful Diana was at times, as she experienced the world for the first time. (Like her laugh when she first saw snow.) and utterly believable she was as Diana/Wonder Woman. And Steve was ABSOLUTELY what he should have been. He helped Diana. He guided her through an insane world (to her). And, sure, at first he tried to be chivalrous and all "get behind me!" But when he realized that she didn't need his protection, he was like... "ah...she's got this." And even when he told her to hold back, it was "you can't just go into the room and kill someone!" Not holding her back because "I don't want you to be in the path of danger!" And it was refreshing that Wonder Woman was portrayed as a warrior and a hero first and foremost and not as "well, here's this super hot woman in tight spandex who, sure, can fight. But the important thing is...did you notice she's a super hot woman in spandex?" I loved the first battle because it was filmed like any other action scene would be, if all the characters were men. There were action shots that were slowed down, but the focus in doing so was always "look at this impressive move of a person leaning down from a horse to grab a shield" or "focus on these three arrows that are shot at the same time and all three hit their targets because these warriors are BAD ASS." Not "these are kinda cool moves that show off the ladies' asses and make their boobs jiggle and you should totally get a chance to appreciate those attributes, so we'll slow it down so you can." I also loved that the Amazons are all supposed to be immortal and beautiful and yet they didn't just cast a bunch of 25 year olds and put them in sexy togas because..."they're supposed to be beautiful, physically perfect women! Of course they'd all be 25 with flawless skin! Maybe because Hippolyta is a mom and the queen, we'll let her be...32. But that's as far as we go." (And, you know, Robin Wright was stunning as Buttercup in Princess Bride and she is no less gorgeous - and considerably more kick ass - as Antiope.) Also, something that I have missed in the DCEU so far, at least... I loved that Diana was actually allowed to ENJOY and be HAPPY in herself, in her powers, in who she is. I know people complain that DCEU doesn't have enough jokes, but that isn't it, really. It's more - to me - that they are given the heavy weight of the responsibility they carry but none of the joy that comes with it. I have felt Superman has been given his burdens but not his joy (and I'm talking for who he is and what he can do HIMSELF, not in his relationship with Lois). Diana has a pretty significant, pretty heavy weight to carry. The Amazons exist to protect the world and take down Ares. But I never felt that she carried this as her burden so much as...her honored duty, I guess? Like there is this weight to carry, but rather than having her struggle with whether to or how to carry such a burden, she embraced her duty, her role, her innate differences with open arms. She welcomed it and found pride and even joy in it. So...I enjoyed ALL of that. But, yeah, when I think about the story itself...there are some issues I have with it, a few things I wish they'd done differently. I am looking forward to the sequel, but I also hope these Unnecessary Secrets are out of the way.

update - Strangers in the Night
Thanks for the support everyone!
knottedblonde (AKA @parenthesisfanfiction) is my blessed beta - read her story ! It’s good for your health.
AO3 | FFN
There's a knock at the front door by the time Artemis' eyes snap open. It's sunny and bright, even with the thick drapes hanging over her windows. The light is a welcome presence for her, but the repulsive scent of blood mixed with antiseptic makes her nose scrunch up in discomfort. Her studio reeks of hospital, only less sanitary.
Artemis quickly realises that there is no way she's going to let anyone into this warzone, much less see the wings hanging off her back, carpenters on not, but then Wally's already shouting, "I'll get it!", so she decides to scramble for the bathroom instead.
Easier said than done. She forgets that she can't move as swiftly as she used to. Artemis falls to the ground in a heap just as the door opens and reveals four masked figures standing in front of her in utter disbelief. She can't see them now, of course, hair having tumbled all over her line of sight on her way down, but she's seen enough to know exactly who and what is standing on the threshold of her home: the Justice League.
The freaking Justice League is filing into her house, one by one, thanking Wally for allowing them inside like they know him. She realises with a jolt that these are the connections that he has. Not mafia, not gangsters, nor are they hitmen. They're superheroes. Wally West is on a nickname-basis with Earth's most prominent superheroes.
The Flash, she's used to – Batman, no way.
All the alarm bells are going off in her head, urging her to duck and hide, or conceal the suitcase carrying Venom in the crack beneath the floorboards while Daddy goes to answer the door. Artemis blinks. She remembers that Sportsmaster is long gone, probably off committing some heinous crime on the other side of the globe. She's safe; the League isn't a trigger warning for her anymore. Breathe, Artemis. Breathe.
Pulling her tresses away from her eyes, Artemis spots Wally walking back and forth from her fridge, accommodating the heroes with cups of the cheap orange juice she'd recently purchased for half price. They don't seem to register the obviously poor quality of the juice, nor do their noses wrinkle at the pungent scent emanating from her carpet.
All four of them: Batman, Nightwing, Hawkwoman, and the Flash, are staring at her inquisitively. She feels naked under their gazes, like they're all trying to peel off the layers of her skin, like they're trying to uncover all of her deepest, darkest secrets. Sadly, Artemis has those in surplus, most of which are highly relevant to the League – not that they know that, she hopes.
The Flash coughs pointedly, and all of a sudden Wally's gently prying her off the ground, making sure to avoid exacerbating any wounds on her arms, then helps settle her back onto her bed, this time sitting upright and facing them all.
Interestingly, Wally has a knack for alleviating awkward situations with witty repertoire and light-hearted jabs (which, honestly, freaks her out, because Batman doesn't seem to be the type who enjoys joking around), because soon Nightwing's starting to join in with Wally's conversation with the Flash.
"So," he addresses her, in an oddly familiar voice, "A little bird went nuts when he called me about your situation last night, I hope you don't mind that I've called some back-up; this isn't something that a simple renovation will fix, unfortunately." He gestures towards her wings with a gloved hand.
She gets his point, accepts the glass of juice and painkiller tablets that Wally shoves under her nose, downs them, and coughs a little. "I'll manage."
Batman's slitted eyes angle towards her. She gets the feeling that he recognises her from the few run-ins they'd had while she trained with Sportsmaster, but thankfully he doesn't comment on it. Artemis prays he doesn't remember her, because she left Gotham City to start over, and there's no telling what will happen if he opens that can of worms.
"Artemis Crock," he says, with an air of finality.
"Yes."
Hawkwoman interjects herself into the conversation. "Your wings are impressive."
"Thanks." Artemis notes the credibility of that statement.
It's not the first time Artemis has heard of Hawkwoman, but it's the first time she's seeing the woman up close and in real time. She's deeply impressed. There's a severe mask on her face, hawk-like and shimmering gold wherever the sunlight hits it. Overall, Artemis gets the feeling that Hawkwoman isn't someone she wants to mess with, seeing how there are muscles bulging out from underneath her battle-gear, and the metallic wings protruding from her shoulder blades look so sharp they can (probably) cut into diamond. Distantly, she wonders why Batman's summoning Hawkwoman - of all people - to show up in Kansas when there's so many other exciting places she can be, like Michigan, or Prague.
"Uh-"
"Safe to say you won't be at the Museum for a while, then?" The Flash interrupts her thoughts, ignoring Hawkwoman's irritated elbow-jap at his side. "Sorry. You could always pass your wings off as an elaborate costume. Early Halloween? It's still a month away." Batman shoots him a look. "Shutting up now."
She can't help but grin at the familiarity of his countenance. Everything around her is shifting and collapsing, but at least she knows that Central City's favourite hero moves at a constant speed. Flirty and flighty he may be, but Artemis finds herself unexpectedly reassured by his presence.
Deciding to angle for diplomacy, Artemis clears her throat and ignores the ache in her back. "So," her voice sounds unexpectedly hoarse when all four superheroes and Wally refocus their attention to her, "I think it's best that we address the elephant in the room. What brings four high-profile members of the Justice League to cosy Kansas?" And how? Artemis hadn't known that so many big-gun heroes could be so receptive to a civilian scientist. Clearly, Wally has much more influence than she's aware.
Batman, forgoing all formalities, wastes no time being as transparent and simultaneously vague as possible. "The League is interested in the necklace that your team excavated in Greece months ago, Miss Crock. We have reason to believe that it possesses magical properties - dangerous properties, should it be placed in the wrong hands - and as it stands, we know almost nothing else about it, save for what's right in front of us." He lets the implication of his words sink in.
"We're here to offer you a deal, or a partnership." Batman's tone softens slightly, yet still retaining the hard edge that she's come to associate with Gotham's Dark Night. "You've spent years of your life writing a dissertation on the influence of power on Greco-Roman art and scouring the globe for the very same information that the League is now looking for. Should you choose to help us, we can offer you rehabilitation, and protection."
She fidgets on her bed slightly, somewhat disconcerted by the onslaught of information. Judging by the nonplussed expressions of everyone else in the room, Batman's extensive periods of silence, peppered with outbursts of cold, hard facts, seem to be a 'thing'. She isn't sure if she finds that funny or not.
"Look," Artemis says after a brief pause, "I'm going to pretend that I'm not creeped out by how much you know about me." She really isn't, though. Anyone who knows anything in Gotham City knows that the Batman and his gang of Bat-children are the world's pantheon of detectives. "And I can help you, free of any charge. There's no reason why you should go out of your way to protect me when I'm hardly a target."
Because by now, Artemis knows well enough to steer clear of any unnecessary affiliations with the Justice League, lest any questionable family members manage to track her down and make her life a living Hell. Still, she's relieved to know that Batman is here for the knowledge that she's been researching for close to a decade, and not to arrest and accost her for her underground connections.
And then she sees the slight wince from the more expressive faction of her audience - namely the Flash - and looks at them curiously. "Unless, there's something else you need to tell me."
It becomes startlingly clear that Batman is the go-to man for the deliverance of bad news, because he immediately resumes his speech. "The Justice League isn't the only party that wants you, Miss Crock." He presses a button on his suit's wrist and shows her a holographic screen of the three specific words she'd been hoping to avoid for longer. "I assume you're familiar with the League of Shadows?"
There's a trickle of dread flowing down from the nape of her neck to the bottom of her spine, a feeling Artemis hasn't had creep up on her for years. "Yes," she replies, feeling her throat clamp up, "I am."
He's the only one who looks at her knowingly, and she suspects that her family isn't as underground as she would prefer anymore. Everyone else in the room seems to look scandalised, or shocked, or both. "So," Batman says with an air of finality, though the slits in his mask seem to vaguely express something more sympathetic. "Do we have a deal?"
Wally watches Batman's black cloak disappear behind Artemis' door with a sombre feeling in the pit of his stomach. Which is saying something, given that his stomach is widely considered to be bottomless.
Artemis is still upright on her bed as he turns around and realises one thing: he has no idea how to explain this entire situation to her. His connection to the League, the fact that as a civillian (to her), he really shouldn't be as aware of their operations as he should've been. But then again, the fact that Artemis had barely blinked an eyelash when Batman brought up the League of Shadows, or that Batman hadn't even needed to elaborate on their operations to her, was the one thing that hadn't stopped bugging him since she made a deal to join the League.
Join, in the unofficial, ward-of-the-Justice-League, sense. Not as a superhero.
Unless she wanted to be one.
He stares at the gigantic brown spot covering the majority of Artemis' carpet, yet to be cleansed or removed. It'll be problematic if someone unwittingly visits Artemis' studio and sees the portal to Hell emblazoned onto the floors. The cops might get involved, and thereby the media - he really doesn't want Aunt Iris to find out about Artemis' wings via the Police, and before he has a chance to explain the situation to her. Wally's hand runs down the length of his face.
And what was the League of Shadows' deal with Artemis anyway?
They'd all been debriefed about their task before they left for Central City: the Museum was holding an exhibition unveiling an artefact that the Flash had recovered, and their job was to protect it from harm. The curator was the second priority when they started, but now Wally's beginning to realise that Batman and Nightwing are being annoyingly unclear about their motives again - obviously Artemis Crock is a lot more than she lets on, and so far only they're the ones who really seem to know her. Her and her affiliation with the Shadows, the world's deadliest group of assassins.
He watches the wings protruding from her back move to the rhythm of her chest, fluttering lightly when she fidgets. It's then that he also realises that Artemis is fixing him a stare more scrutinising than Batman's trademark.
She opens her mouth and slams it shut a second later, as though she's deciding against something. Wally dearly hopes, on Einstein's grave, that she'll let go of whatever thought is clearly making her more upset by the second. He has literally been awake for twenty-eight hours without a sizeable amount of food in the past six, and so genuinely cannot handle an argument at this point in time.
"You-" she pauses and takes a deep breath as he tenses, "Who are you?"
"I'm Wally," he replies slowly. "Wally West? Do you have a concussion?" Wally reaches for her head. Artemis slaps his hand away.
"I mean, you're one of the hundreds of scientists who work at STAR Labs. How do you even know the Justice League?"
"The same way you do," he shoots back, mentally slapping himself, "I'm a big fan."
Artemis breathes out through her nostrils. "Big fans normally aren't on a nickname-basis with Batman," her eyes narrow at him, "Are you a spy?"
"I'm not a spy."
"Then how about you tell me how you happen to be able to call Earth's Mightiest Heroes over to Kansas - overnight?" He knows what her predicament is, what it looks like. In all honesty he wouldn't trust someone from highschool (who isn't Dick Grayson) who invites some of the biggest superheroes in the world to respond a small distress signal, either. Artemis' expression becomes stonier the longer he stays silent. "You've got to be kidding me."
"Hey - you're not exactly Little Miss Transparent either!" His foot flies into his mouth before he can catch it, and Artemis is already starting to glare at him, so Wally decides to Hell with it and runs ahead. "You didn't even blink when the Shadows came up! How do you know about them?"
"What I know is none of your business."
His jaw clenches at the hypocrisy. "Well, you don't see me launching the Spanish Inquisition against you - why should I tell you about the League?"
"Because you're living in my apartment, genius," she's standing up on her bed and glowering down at him like she really, really wants to punch him. "Which, by the way, I never wanted!" He blinks exactly once from the gust of wind that rushes through the studio and feels his expression harden into a glare.
"Fine," his voice doesn't come out as shaky as he feels internally, which he's thankful for. "But I was never here for you - I'm here for Iris."
Despite the bluntless of his words, the name seems to trigger a calming response in Artemis. Her eyes begin to look considerably less crazed, she exhales deeply, and her wings start to fold in. She's silent for a good few minutes, during which time Wally's anger ebbs away in small waves - enough to dissipate the uncomfortable feeling scratching its way up his chest but not enough to stop his face from burning. "Fine."
"Get some sleep," he walks over to the window that isn't next to her bed and throws it open. Its frame slams against the wall noisily, which neither of them bother commenting on. "I'm grabbing more bandages."
And going out for air. Wally shrugs on a coat and closes the door behind him - carefully, this time - before activating the alarm system he knows Nightwing installed just before the League were officially introduced into Artemis' studio. He isn't angry at her, per se. Just incredibly frustrated. He doesn't recall her being as confrontational in high school, and quickly amends that thought when he distinctly remembers her never talking to him for a decade.
And in any case, he'll be seeing her more frequently than she'd like for a while now - as Kid Flash, and not Wally West. The image of her connecting the dots and realising that she's been living with Kid Flash does not bode well in his stomach, which is obnoxiously grumbling by now. Wally passes a hotdog vendor and retracts his footsteps.
At the very least, before he stresses out over Artemis for another few weeks, he'll eat his weight in sausage.

Podcast Teatime: The Question Session
A very welcome February day to you all! This is my first Q&A of the new year and I thought no one was better to pick for this beloved series than the creator of The Bright Sessions podcast, Lauren Shippen.
I’ve been itching to know what this starlet in the podcasting scene has to say about her work on the show, her muses, and what she might have in store for us in the future.
(The following is a direct copy-and-paste from the email)
Hi PodCake!
Thanks for reaching out! Here are my answers:
Question One: What drove you to make the series have therapy as a central plot point? Is it more of a framing device for the overall narrative or is there a more specific reason?
It definitely started as a very convenient framing device. Everyone knows what therapy is, and has an idea of what happens there, so there wasn’t a complicated premise or world that the audience needs to buy into. It also gave me the excuse to keep things confined to two people in one room - those kinds of scenes can be hard to keep active, but with therapy as an activity in of itself, the audience doesn’t get bored (hopefully).
But ultimately, I wanted to write something that would allow characters to really discuss their feelings and delve into their own emotional lives. People rarely do this in their actual lives, but therapy provides this space.
Question Two: Is there an ultimate plan you have for your overall story or do you simply make things up as you go along?
It’s a little bit of both. My writing is always very focused on character, rather than plot, so I usually think about where I want to take the characters and build the plot around that. There are some exceptions to this (which I won’t identify here because: spoilers), but I’m rarely thinking about the big plot machinations first.
As I start to map out a season, I have a target that I’m trying to hit, whether it’s a reveal about a character, a big change in the dynamic of the group, etc. I then start to write the season with that target in mind, but how I get there is discovered along the way. This has meant that some things have changed pretty drastically from when I started out, but it has also led to some really exciting, organic discoveries about the characters themselves.
Question Three: Your show has a very interesting cast of characters. Is there a specific character you have the funnest time writing for? Whose the hardest character to put on paper?
I think this shows in his scripts, but I love writing Caleb. That’s why his scripts are usually at least 5 pages longer than everyone else’s. I like getting my brain into that teenage boy voice and I love the contradictions that Caleb contains - he’s smart, but so often oblivious; he’s very caring, but he also has an anger problem; he wants to talk about his feelings, but he can be so bad at communicating.
I’m also really enjoying writing both Mark and Wadsworth this season. Mark is such a cheery, charismatic person who has been through so much trauma - balancing who he is by nature with what has happened to him is a fun challenge. Wadsworth is just…she’s awesome, and so unbelievably arrogant, but has reason to be, and that’s a lot of fun to write.
Chloe is definitely the hardest to write. She’s constantly having at least two conversations: the one that’s happening out loud and the one she’s participating in in her head with everyone’s thoughts. Chloe is always at least one step ahead of everyone she’s talking to, so balancing each of those conversations and thinking about how what she’s hearing is affecting her own emotional state can be really difficult.
Question Four: I tend to use The Bright Sessions as a great example of expressive and effective acting in audio drama and I’m curious as to where you found so many wonderful actors. Did you already know them all or did you seek them out yourself?
I am lucky enough to live in Los Angeles, where I am surrounded by incredible actors that the big shots haven’t discovered yet. Most of the cast are from an acting class I’ve been taking at The BGB Studio for three years. Julia (Dr. Bright), Briggon (Caleb), Charlie (Damien), Andrew (Mark), Phillip (Frank), and Alanna (Rose) all go to that studio and that’s where I met them.
Anna (Chloe) and I met in a UCB class three years ago, and she introduced me to Ian and Alex M., who play Agent Green and Wadsworth respectively. Briggon, appropriately, introduced me to Alex G., who plays Adam. And then we have Reyn, who plays Charlie Decker, and who I know from ars Paradoxica, which our sound producer, Mischa Stanton, created. So it really is a family affair.
Question Five: The Bright Sessions has been achieving a lot of success in the podcast community over the few years it’s been out. Did you expect it? What do you attribute this success to?
I definitely did not expect it. I certainly hoped that people would listen, and had lofty goals to have tens of thousands of subscribers, but when we started out I assumed that was a pipe dream. I - and I think this applies to everyone else involved as well - have been delightfully surprised by its success at every turn. In just the 15 months we’ve been doing this, we’ve had so many people listen and send us messages and draw fanart and be enthusiastic, and we are incredibly grateful.
I wish I could tell you that we followed a very specific set of steps to have a successful podcast, but I honestly have no idea how we’ve gotten to where we are. Obviously, I’m proud of the show - I wouldn’t make it if I thought it wasn’t good - and I think people should listen, but I’m still surprised by how it’s taken off. I spent a lot of time in the early days on Tumblr, Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, etc., just trying to get people to listen and I think putting in those hours really helped. And then I think it’s just been a lot of dumb luck of the right people finding us.
Being featured in different publications and on iTunes has really helped people find us and those features came up more or less organically - thankfully, there are people out there who actively seek out audio drama and then write about what they like. But mostly, I think the show has done well because we’re telling stories about characters a lot of people can relate to. I’ve certainly made an attempt to write something that is engaging and compelling, but having the actors that we have to bring these characters to life is, I think, our biggest asset.
Question Six:  What drove you to make this into an audio drama? Do you have any inspirations you’d like to credit?
The reason for making The Bright Sessions an audio drama was two fold. First, there was the practical reason: making an audio drama is far less expensive than making something for film. I needed to be able to do every step myself - the writing, the recording, the post-production - on a tight budget. Audio drama was the solution.
Second, the creative reason: I like the freedom of interpretation that audio drama provides. I’ve been in fandom spaces for a long time and, though I’ve never been a creator of fan works myself, I’ve always loved consuming them. The wonderful thing about audio dramas is the variety of listener interpretations they spur. Listening to an audio drama is like reading a book - you can fully immerse yourself and imagine the world and the characters however you like. Creating something that encouraged that kind of imagination really appealed to me. There were many creative reasons for sticking to audio, but this was the one I was most excited about.
While there aren’t any direct inspirations for the content of The Bright Sessions, Welcome to Night Vale and BBC Radio’s Cabin Pressure were the two pieces of audio fiction that I listened to before writing The Bright Sessions. WTNV is simple - mostly just one man talking into a microphone, with music. Cabin Pressure is elaborate - multiple scenes with different soundscapes and effects each episode, recorded in front of a live audience, big name actors. I didn’t have the dough for a BBC-like production and I think Night Vale only works as a mostly one-man show because of the magical combination of Cecil Baldwin, Cranor & Fink’s writing, and Disparition’s music.
That formula is impossible to replicate. When thinking about how I wanted to tell a story through audio, these shows were my two reference points and helped me find the middle ground in which The Bright Sessions exists.
BONUS: Has creating The Bright Sessions been a major impact in your life? How have things changed for you?
Oh boy, has it ever. The Bright Sessions has become my life. It started as a side project - a way for me to try my hand at writing and do some acting with a couple of friends. It has now turned into a full-time job (or, more accurately, three full-time jobs). On a practical, macro-career level, doing this podcast has completely changed the way I approach my professional life. Whereas before I was mainly an actor, I’m now a “writer/creator”.
People like the thing I make and they write about it and invite me to come places and talk about it and that could not be more different from the life of general obscurity I lived as an actor. I’m by no means famous or even known outside of podcast circles, but I do feel that I am beginning to experience a level of recognition that is exciting and weird and genuinely a bit confusing. Also on the practical side, the success of the show has opened a lot of doors to me in entertainment that were previously closed. You’ll have to stay tuned on where that leads, because I certainly can’t predict at the moment.
On a personal level, The Bright Sessions has given me so, so much. It’s given me the opportunity to work with people I deeply admire and grow something with them. I cannot ever express how rewarding that is. Beyond the friendships that doing the show has strengthened, and the amazing work I’ve been able to observe in these actors, the show has, funnily enough, been very good for my mental health. Creating the character of Sam was like giving my own anxiety a voice. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend acting out panic attacks for everyone who struggles with anxiety (those scenes are hard) but for me, it has been extremely cathartic.
Sam and I are very different people in what we want out of life, but our anxieties are the same. It is such a relief to be able to write a scene in which Sam explains why going outside or talking to people or feeling a certain way is terrifying. I now have something to point to and say, “this is who I am, this is how it feels sometimes to just go to the grocery store, these are my fears” and, while that is a vulnerable and frightening thing to lay bare, it has been oddly healing.
And then to get messages from people saying, “I relate to Sam so much, thank you for her, I feel less alone now” is truly moving for me. It makes me feel less alone and I am unbelievably grateful for that.
And, mixing the practical and the personal, doing The Bright Sessions finally made me get my act together and actually start going to therapy last year. I thought it was time for me to practice what I preach.
Such elegance. Such confidence. Such charisma towards her field! I want to thank Miss Shippen for doing this Q&A with me and to you all for reading this.
I say you make your appointment pronto and take a listen to The Bright Sessions for yourself. This has been PodCake, end recording.

What Your Content Marketing Agency Needs to Be Successful
If your content marketing agency wants to achieve industry-leading success in today’s environment, your strategy needs to include several essential components. With these critical principles, even fledgling agencies can stand heads above their competition.
Impossible? I’ve seen it happen. Starting from scratch, I used these principles to build Marketing Insider Group into an agency whose clients number among the finest companies in the country.
It’s not rocket science. It’s just fundamentals.
Your agency, too, can rise to capture the lion’s share of your competitors’ business. Here are the ingredients with which you can build your own content marketing secret sauce:
Quick Takeaways:
Start with your goals and your target customers.
Add a passionate, talented team.
Organize your operations.
Stay focused on your customers’ needs and your goals.
Goals Are Your Roadmap to Success
If you don’t know where you want to go, you’ll never know what success looks like. For that reason, start with your goals.
Your goals should follow some key guidelines. They need to be “SMART,” that is:
Specific: Will your agency specialize in one type of niche content – such as technology – or will your agency produce content for a variety of industries? As for the content you produce for each client, specify what each piece will accomplish for the client and their customers. Which channels do we need to publish our content on?
Measurable: What are the numbers you want to achieve every week? Every month? Every year?
Achievable: Are your goals realistic? Aim for the stars, but realize that the more realistic outcome is that you’ll hit the proverbial eagle.
Relevant: Are the types of content you want to create relevant to your target customers?
Time-bound: Make sure that each goal has a deadline; otherwise, you won’t be able to plan a timetable to accomplish each goal.
When your goals follow these guidelines, they provide you and your team with a clearer vision of what you want to accomplish.
Research Potential Clients and Customers
A successful content marketing agency must take a two-pronged approach to client research. Not only do they need to identify and research businesses likely to become clients, but they also need to look at those clients’ customer bases.
If you’re just starting an agency, ask yourself, “What types of clients can benefit the most from my expertise? What types of potential clients have responded well to my existing content?”
If you’re already operating your agency, look at your current client list. What problems can you solve for them? How can you attract more clients like them?
Then, research the typical customers for each of those clients. In both cases, you’ll find characteristics that can help you identify commonalities among your clients and their customers.
Look at their demographics, online behavior, preferences, goals, and pain points. What problems keep them up at night? What do they want to accomplish in their business and in life?
Once you’ve identified these potential clients, narrow down their characteristics and pain points with customer personas. Putting a human face on a client or customer segment can help you create content that speaks to each segment’s needs.
Giving each persona a name, such as “CEO Cal” for a big-box store client – or for Cal’s target customers, “DIY Darlene” – helps you to think more clearly about what kinds of content will solve problems for each segment.
Build Your Team
Even though you might start off as a solo entrepreneur, your agency will soon grow. You’ll need to hire permanent staff or a cadre of committed freelancers to help handle the volume.
You’ll need knowledgeable office staff, someone to handle the numbers, account managers, people to analyze your data, and, of course, content creators.
Start lean and build out. For shoestring budgets, freelance marketplaces can be a rich source of writers, editors, graphic designers, and videographers. Often, you can even find virtual office staff who will work on a contract basis.
Identify the best of the best – and provide them with incentives to stay on. Content marketing is a competitive field, so be sure that the compensation and perks they receive make it worthwhile for them to stay.
Look for talent, innovation, passion, and a customer-focused mindset in every member of your team, right down to the janitor, if you’re a brick-and-mortar agency. With a team all pulling together on behalf of your clients and their customers, you’ll be more likely to experience great success.
A Digital Platform to Organize Your Operations
Whether you’re only a skeleton crew or a huge agency, having a single place to organize all your content is worth its weight in gold. Not only should your platform have a content calendar, but it should allow your team to collaborate, plan, schedule, create, publish, archive, and automate your content on various channels.
Here, we use DivvyHQ to keep us on track. With everything at our teams’ fingertips, we can identify high-performing content to repurpose for new posts, research new customer segments, collaborate with experts for highly technical content, and accomplish a thousand more tasks.
You’ll discover that when you can set routine tasks on autopilot, your team will have more time to brainstorm new topics and create amazing content for yourself and your clients.
The Right Context
We live in challenging times. If our sole goal was to sell stuff, it would be reprehensible to do marketing as usual.
But that’s not what marketing is – or should be. The goal of content marketing is to solve customers’ problems. In fact, that’s why people go into business in the first place.
Yes, we make money from our efforts. But we’d be out of business in a heartbeat if all we wanted to do was to make a quick buck.
Our content marketing strategy, then, must happen in the right context. Giving the right advice at the right moment is always welcome, especially when your clients face incredible challenges.
When we focus on helping instead of selling, we’ll focus on the problems our customers and clients face at the time. We’ll look through our content toolbox to come up with the solutions they need.
A Solid Strategy
Your focus on your clients’ needs means that you must have a content marketing strategy that delivers a solid return on their investment.
Catchy slogans can only go so far. You must build their trust, help them grow, convert leads, and engender loyalty. You need to provide your clients with content that positions them as a thought leader in their field.
In the same vein, the content you create on your own blog needs to do the same for your business. Otherwise, you’ll end up on the unemployment line.
So, you create content, publish it, and then measure the results. Tweak your poorer performers, repurpose and promote your best performers, and create content that eclipses the success of its predecessors. A solid strategy is also about looking for new audience segments, researching their needs, and creating content that targets their needs.
A Buy-In from Your Team
If you’re the head of your agency, getting buy-in from your team can be as simple as empowering them to own their own work. Activate them to become brand advocates. After all, employee-generated content brings in about seven times the revenue as does the content on your official channels.
But if you’re a forward-thinking management type in someone else’s content marketing agency, you’ll need to gain buy-in from your C-suite team. If it’s a long-standing agency, you’ll need to show the suits some real money to effect change:
Like putting your company’s collective brainpower to work across departmental silos to create more effective content.
Like seeing content marketing as meeting clients’ needs rather than long-form advertising for their products.
Like ditching your antiquated approach to SEO with leading-edge natural-language keywords.
The answer: simple. Do a little extra homework and treat them like you’d treat your best client.
Discover your C-suite’s pain points and create content that demonstrates how a more progressive approach to content marketing will better meet their needs. Usually, that means numbers.
So, dive into the analytics and show them the money.
An Annual Plan – and Beyond
At the very least, you need an annual plan that maps out the content you’ll create during the year. Leave a little wiggle room in case world events drive the need for timely content.
Write down the topics you need to cover – even suggest headlines. Decide which team members have the expertise to create content around those topics and assign them well ahead of time.
But I’d advise thinking well beyond a yearly timeline. Look at where you want to be in, say five or ten years – and devise a content strategy that will take you there. Long-term vision leads to long-term success.
A Focus on Quantity, Quality, and Frequency
If you’ve been around content marketing for even a short time, you’ve no doubt heard the debates. No, not about the Oxford comma. About quantity versus quality.
I’m a big fan of both. Here’s why:
Statistics show that companies that post at least eight to 16 posts every month drive traffic upward by a factor of 1.5 to 3.5. But that’s not the only factor impacting success.
We need to make sure that the content we produce lives up to the high standards our company holds. More specifically, it must engage readers in the storyline even as it helps them solve their problems. And, it must set your brand apart from the rest.
You also need to be consistent. Just think about it from your readers’ perspective.
Would you like to hear crickets from one of your favorite blogs for three weeks, only to have your inbox overflowing with the month’s entire 16 blog posts in the last week? I didn’t think so.
So, we recommend that you spread out the content love. Two to four posts per week is about the ideal frequency. That way, your subscribers can leaf through the intros quickly to see which posts they want to read.
Vary it as needed to meet your clients’ needs, though. For example, if your clients are having a rough month (such as when they were dealing with the peak of the coronavirus pandemic), you can post more frequently to help them over their rough patch.
Finally, Have a Solid Measurement Plan
Each piece of content has its own goals. Some posts are in-depth solutions to complex problems to drive conversions to sales, while others simply build brand awareness with your knowledge and expertise.
For posts that you create to build brand awareness, increased website traffic or social shares might be the most important indicator of success. White papers, on the other hand, should drive conversions, either to a sale or for an in-person consultation.
Set your KPIs before you create each piece so that your content team can gear their copy or video toward meeting those goals. Then use your content analytics to see how well each piece performed in those key areas.
When you use these principles to guide your agency’s core strategy, you’ll be on the road to success. It’s a competitive world – but one that provides an even playing field when you use a proven strategy.

Working as a freelance writer, I have the privilege of coming across many cutting-edge brands and organizations that are making the world a better place.  However, when I met Ben Hamilton, the Founder and Creative Director of the Wild Agency, I thought to myself, “How cool—someone who helps organizations make an impact on the planet.” Rather than some run-of-the-mill marketing agency, Hamilton specializes in conservation storytelling, and if you’re like me after hearing that term, you may be wondering what it all means.  Thankfully, Hamilton made some time to sit down with me and answer a few questions about his agency. If you’re an aspiring videographer or a marketer who wants to help save the world, his insight can help steer you in the right direction.  Without further adieu, here’s what we discussed:  1. You’re a “Conservation” Storyteller—What Does that Mean? Hamilton: My definition of a Conservation Storyteller is someone who helps translate conservation messages, (like, we need to reduce ocean plastic waste), into stories so that audiences can relate to them.  We work with non-profits, foundations, and scientific institutions to great critical conservation messages out to the world.  In today’s digital landscape, most of that storytelling occurs online and as a company we focus on videos to drive the most engagement.   2. And Video Marketing is Your Specialty, Right? How Does that Work? Hamilton: My primary medium for storytelling is through video production and I’ve spent the past decade working on films for BBC, National Geographic, and Smithsonian—here’s a taste of one of our latest projects. Most of that time has been spent honing my craft as a visual storyteller, but the marketing side is something we have only recently gotten really involved in. For us, video marketing is about understanding audiences so we can craft content that is relatable, persuasive, and most importantly, targeted. We want to know where audiences are online and at what times, what content they watch, who they follow, and what they like.   When we combine all of that, we can craft hyper-targeted stories for each audience type, and that is where we start to see a real impact on the world.  3. How’d You Get Started as a Videographer and Conservationist? Hamilton: As a kid I was obsessed with movies like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, and ultimately, I went to film school at the University of Texas to pursue my dream of becoming a director.  I didn’t even know there were people who made a career making documentary films. Growing up, I loved the outdoors, and my freshman year, I pitched a short video about a conservation effort in Alaska with the hopes of hiking and kayaking in the wildest place in North America. I fell in love with the wilderness and that project brought me back to Alaska all four summers of school and resulted in me moving up there after graduation.  That experience, luck, and networking landed me a job at National Geographic, and I moved to Washington D.C. where I was immersed in the world of natural history and non-profit films. I wanted to stay independent—I like that lifestyle—so I started my own company and the rest is history! 4. What are Some of the Most Important Conservation Issues Around the World? Hamilton: That is a pretty hard question to answer.  I think about conservation as a value system where we prioritize humanity’s well being, as well as other life over the long-term. Much of the conservation ethics are grounded in humility and restraint, and looking at the world through that lens. Now, practically speaking, some of the big issues we are involved in are Ocean Plastic Pollution, Seafood Bycatch, Climate Change, Land Use Change (deforestation, conversion for agriculture, etc), Invasive Species, Endangered Species….the list could go on.  I’ve personally seen glaciers disappear in my short career, I’ve filmed a frog in the rainforest that is now thought to be extinct, and I have seen plastic waste on some of the most remote beaches on earth. I don’t want my kids to grow up in a world where we have paved over everything and the beauty and diversity that makes life so special is just a memory 5. What Do Conservationists Need to Make an Impact with their Stories? Hamilton: Conservationists are often working at the edges of our planet.  They are on the front lines and often act as the canaries in the coal mine. There are huge NGOs that are already doing massive campaigns, but many of our clients at Wild Agency are normal people who want to get the message out that something is going on and that they need more than their small network to join forces to help solve it.  That is where storytelling comes in. We help translate and amplify their messages to audiences to drive impact and action. 6. Can You Explain Your Strategy for Conservation Storytelling? Hamilton: To put it simply, we follow a 5-step approach:  We set an impact goal   Based on that goal we research audiences to understand them  We craft target stories for those audiences  We then facilitate the delivery of those stories online  We track this process from beginning to end to assess our impact 7. Do You Think COVID-19 Will Change Conservation Efforts Moving Forward? Hamilton: If COVID-19 has shown us anything, it is that social media is the primary way human beings are consuming content.  Many non-profits have not fully committed to social media marketing as part of their strategy, but moving forward, it is not an option. The only way—and the best way—to reach targeted audiences is on social media, and I think we will see more informed and better-crafted stories for those mediums moving forward. 8. What Advice Do You Have for Organizations or People Who Want to Share their Conservation Stories? Hamilton: My biggest piece of advice is to think long and hard about what you want to achieve with a piece of content and let that goal drive everything in a campaign.  The more clear and defined your goal, the better you can push for results. Then, after you are done with the campaign, have the awareness to look at the results and really learn from them. 9. Anything Else You’d Like to Share? Hamilton: We’ve just launched our new Wild Agency website, and we welcome anyone to our network who wants to learn more about how to heal the planet. You can click here to connect with us. Change the World with Fiverr Throughout all the good work that Hamilton produces, he understands that freelance videographers and creators are at the heart of powerful campaigns.  That’s why Fiverr is a great platform for freelancers of all kinds to connect with new clients and grow their success in projects they believe in. Whether you’re a freelancer looking to build your experience or you’re a brand searching for the right storyteller to help launch your products or share your mission, Fiverr is here to change the world.  Click here to become a seller on Fiverr and start making a difference!  !function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s){if(f.fbq)return;n=f.fbq=function(){n.callMethod? n.callMethod.apply(n,arguments):n.queue.push(arguments)};if(!f._fbq)f._fbq=n; n.push=n;n.loaded=!0;n.version='2.0';n.queue=[];t=b.createElement(e);t.async=!0; t.src=v;s=b.getElementsByTagName(e)[0];s.parentNode.insertBefore(t,s)}(window, document,'script','https://connect.facebook.net/en_US/fbevents.js'); fbq('init', '109484383045893'); // Insert your pixel ID here. fbq('track', 'PageView'); HEROKITA.com | Digital Talents On Demand Source link

Preparing E-Commerce for the Post-COVID Bounce Back
New Post has been published on http://tiptopreview.com/preparing-e-commerce-for-the-post-covid-bounce-back/
Preparing E-Commerce for the Post-COVID Bounce Back
COVID-19 has switched up life as we know it, and it’s unlikely to stop doing so for some time.
E-commerce shopping is a perfect example of how things have changed, and in a number of ways.
If you feel like Shopify has been dropping huge, disruptive news bombs practically each week now, you’re right!
And who’d have guessed that in the UK, the exclusively online supermarket, Ocado, is now worth more than brick-and-mortar grocers Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, and Marks and Spencer combined.
The speed of transformation in e-commerce since the COVID-19 outbreak (an already fast-paced industry) has been savage.
Supply chains are under strain for many brands selling online (especially where demand is high and supplies are low). How do you best manage expectations and maximize every opportunity to sell to your target audience?
With your consumers now relying on the world of online shopping more than ever, how can you be sure you’re getting your fair share of that online retail pie?
Well, this post is designed to help you answer precisely these questions. Whether your sales have taken a hit or you have “off the wall” levels of demand, here are some ideas to help you navigate that bounce back and to help customers stay in love with your brand.
Pay close attention to changing on site search behavior
Your site search is a goldmine of insight, especially right now. Seriously.
Frequently checking in to understand how and what your customers are looking for once they get to your store can reveal a bunch of opportunities.
It’s possible that before COVID-19 took a stronghold on everyday life, customers had different contexts in mind when searching for your products.
For example, searches for “gloves” today vs. in January are likely to be visitors searching for two separate products entirely. It’s important to ensure that you’re serving today’s customer sufficiently and addressing their context correctly to remain relevant and to improve conversion.
Here’s an extreme example, but it’s a poignant one nonetheless. For context, Holland and Barrett are a popular, high street healthcare retailer with a strong web presence here in the UK.
When searches for “coronavirus” had skyrocketed and demand for hand sanitizer and Paracetamol (another brand of acetaminophen, like Tylenol) were painfully high, what I found incredible was that searching for “coronavirus” on their website yielded no results.
This seemed particularly jarring for a retailer that, first, sells items that have been scientifically proven to kill and help prevent the spread of the virus and, second, is a dedicated healthcare business.
Not only does this throw a huge wrench in the works when it comes to CX and customer perception, this tiny yet costly oversight is likely to have cost them sales and customers too.
Customers are also searching for products that aren’t typically associated with a certain brand or online store due to exhausted stocks elsewhere.
For example, the top three search terms for one of my e-commerce clients are now “Mask”, “mask”, and “PPE”. The search terms “mask”, “PPE”, and close variants were practically non-existent prior to mid-May.
Kit and Ace, a clothing retailer, has responded to precisely this changing behavior. After seeing a huge spike in the number of site searches for masks, they’re now introducing a new, premium, scientifically-derived mask that also fits their brand. They’re donating 100% of profits from the masks, but this tactic will likely to drive more sales in their other categories too.
This is a great move, especially since apparel sales have shrunk during this time. It’s important to find emerging opportunities when typical product lines are no longer in demand.
The point I’m trying to make here is that, in order to succeed coming out of the other side of this pandemic, you need to ensure you’re fully in tune with the wants and needs of today’s customer — whatever that looks like for you. Using site search can absolutely give you a huge window into their demands and interests.
If products are out of stock, offer excellent alternatives (where possible)
As touched on earlier, supply chain management is going to be increasingly challenging — especially in areas where demand is outstripping supply — yet so many retailers miss out here.
For some products, it doesn’t matter how hard you try, every retailer has them listed as “out of stock.”
For branded items that have stock issues globally, being the retailer that offers a perfectly good alternative could be enough to win over that visitor and win the sale that other retailers have lost.
To use a specific example, FTX is a manufacturer of radio-controlled cars, and is a brand sold on Europe e-commerce site Wheelspin. There’s an FTX item that you cannot get before the end of June (for love nor money) on any website due to COVID-19. The pandemic has forced factories to close and that disrupts production for many goods.

Specifically, in this example, it’s the FTX brushed motor that’s become victim to supply chain issues. However, there’s a brand that has a perfectly suitable alternative item that’s identical in specification, and it’s in stock:

Proactively offering solid alternatives with as few compromises as possible can be a great way of winning sales and delighting customers in a way that your competitors likely won’t be.
Add an “in stock only” filter
Continuing on the topic of store stock and managing a turbulent supply chain, a simple but welcome feature is to add an “items in stock” filter.
It goes without saying that allowing customers to browse items they’re able to get their hands on quickly will go down well and could help improve conversion on your website.
Another benefit of adding such a filter is the ability to bring light to other lines that are typically overshadowed by more popular (but now out of stock) items.
Taking this a step further, you could also help your customers experience by adding a filter for products expected to arrive within a certain timeframe, or filter out those that can be backordered.
Add an “email me when back in stock” CTA
If you’re a retailer struggling to get stock of popular lines, there’s a good chance you’re not the only retailer with that problem. Although it may not be possible to get stock any quicker than your competitors, you can absolutely ensure that you’re the first to let potential customers know that it’s back in stock.
Sweeten the deal by personalizing the back-in-stock email
Letting a potential customer know that the item’s back in stock is great, but why not suprise and delight your customers by taking the opportunity to personalize this email too?
Offering personalized cross-sells of the item that’s now back in stock can be a great way to not only give them the good news, but give them additional reasons to visit your shop and potentially increase basket value simultaneously. It’s certainly a win, win here.
Remarket to people when items are back in stock
People are spending more time online — fact. So it makes sense to reach your audience where they’re most likely to be spending time for the foreseeable future.
Depending on the popularity of an item (and how much traffic is going to it whilst it’s remained unavailable), you could create a retargeting list based on visitors that expressed an interest in it now that it’s back in stock.
This can prove to be a great way to reach people, say on social media, that aren’t particularly responsive to email but are spending increased amounts of time on their favorite social platforms.
Although this may not be scalable, or at least I haven’t found a way to make it so, doing this across your top-selling lines or lines with greater margins could prove to be a successful way of pulling engaged and semi-invested visitors back to your site.
Don’t be afraid to increase prices where necessary
Let’s not forget the basic principles of commerce, right? High demand (coupled with low supply) increases prices.
Businesses shouldn’t feel guilty for increasing prices, but of course, there’s a difference between a justifiable increase and straight ripping people off (as demonstrated below):

For context, four tins of 400g Heinz Spaghetti Plus Sausage would retail at around £4 in UK supermarkets (that’s about $5 at current exchange rates).
Think about this scenario for a second: You and your staff are potentially working in environments that could pose serious health risks. Plus there’s additional costs to consider in order to keep people safe. PPE, cleaning products, masks, sick pay for unwell staff, etc., all these factors will push up the cost per sale and erode your margins.
Equally, there are no guarantees right now. Those all-time high levels of sales could come slamming to a fierce halt at any time. Whether that’s caused by a change in demand, decrease in stock, or your business is no longer able to fulfil orders due to an internal COVID-19 outbreak.
Increasing prices fairly to better protect your business against these mostly uncontrollable factors is not a bad thing. In my opinion, it’s just good business sense.
You’ve got to ensure your business is as robust as it can be when faced with these potential eventualities. Increasing your prices fairly can help to better protect it.
Discover creative ways to connect with your audience
As the saying goes, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”. It’s a huge cliché, but it absolutely rings true and remains a powerful statement today.
Finding ways to be creative, cut through the noise, and engage with your audience is essential to staying relevant. Especially if your customer’s cash is heading elsewhere right now.
Here’s an example of a potentially powerful idea that I’ve been working on for a client in the world of apparel — one of the more fiercely affected industries during the pandemic.
People are spending less on fashion, and even less at the luxury end of the scale. So, why not let your audience build themselves a virtual dream wardrobe? Something they’d consider buying for a night out, things they’d have in their suitcase for a summer vacation, etc. It’s a fairly simple idea, but let’s think about the impact this could have for both customer and business:
You’re throwing down a few slices of “feel good”So many people miss going out, right? Heading to bars, clubs, celebrating a milestone, going on a vacation, or even just getting back to the office, so many of us associate buying new outfits as part of those moments.
Allowing your loyal fans and customers to pick out their money’s-no-object dream outfits based on some predetermined wardrobes (office attire, night out, summer holiday) is naturally going to invoke some positive emotions and memories — especially if you inject a social element into it by allowing people to share their collections.
But other wins can be extracted from such an idea too:
You’re collecting valuable user data: You’re getting some valuable insight into the sort of clothing people may buy when lockdown policies begin to wind back. This could help to get a better understanding of demand so you can work on reinvigorating your supply chain successfully.
Plus, you’re getting an idea of what items visitors would put together to help educate new fashion trends and inform “recommended for you” personalization.
You’re helping to alleviate boredom: In some ways, this kind of activity is adding an element of gamification to apparel. With so many people stuck indoors experiencing high levels of procrastination and boredom, it can help to cut through and detach from the realities of lockdown.
You’re creating an opportunity to welcome sales when things pick back up:
Offering an incentive (say 15% off your dream collections) once we’re on the cusp of restoring “normality” could be a really powerful way of encouraging and helping to re-energize apparel and fashion spend online. It’s also a great way to celebrate the comeback.
Last but not least, you’re building brand affinity: I’ve said it before, but it’s extremely important, so I’ll say it again: remaining relevant and keeping marketing efforts up is essential to ensure you remain in good shape when society heads towards the new normal.
Having your audience resonate with your brand and remember your positive actions whilst they’re away will be a major influence on your ability to maintain and deepen those customer relationships post-pandemic.
Final thoughts: the rise of big brands diving into D2C eCommerce
What’s amazing to see is a huge move by big household names and brands. They’re now setting up their own direct-to-consumer (D2C) e-commerce outfits, and on the surface, appear to be going head-to-head with supermarkets.
To highlight a few of my favorite examples, there’s snacks.com — created by Frito-Lay — shipping their brand’s snacking staples across North America.
Then there’s Heinz to Home, delivering popular Heinz products to households in the UK.

How these new D2C e-commerce brands fare in the long term will be interesting to see, but what’s certain is the pandemic is accelerating and evolving e-commerce in a way that’s not been seen before.
As a final note, to those of you hit hard by COVID-19, may I wish you a speedy recovery — personally and professionally.
