This is very late but I really want to thank you for making such a great video on the harmful messages of Wof and analyzing how it perpetuates a lot of harmful tropes in fantasy novels. While not surprising in fantasy, it's relieving that the fandom is also more welcome to see Wings of fire specifically a more critical light these days on here too.
I had actually grown up with the novels, and while I used to love them and enjoyed them since the first book, I always have felt uncomfortable with the Tui's shortcomings as a writer clearly leaking through. As a mixed kid reading about Sunny, sometimes it felt hurtful and mean how she was spoken of as a complete abomination and a stunted prototype of the dragonet they were supposed to have. While dragons that talked about her like that were viewed negatively, it felt strange to me how her being a hybrid is treated as this big surprise in the Brightest night and no dragon even thought "hey maybe she just has some mixed heritage"
When reading about glory as well, I felt disappointed and hurt that the rain wing racism all along was somewhat justified and w the night wings were planning and they're suddenly moving in with them with no soldiers or other damn scientists than Dr m*n*gele- I mean Mastermind having any visible punishment. In book 14, Rainwings are STILL described as lazy by Snowfall. And clearly aren't taken seriously unless you're Glory, Mangrove, Grandeur, or Kinkajou. I was infuriated at the clear holocaust imagery and colonliast plotline being used to make the Nightwings "cool and dark"
Arc 3 for me was the last straw. Pantala was/is literally based on AFRICA too, like..ugh. As a black person who grew up on this series, It's when I no longer enjoyed reading and lost a lot of my love for it. Tui's escapist fantasy no longer felt like a safe space- it felt very harmful to me. And I felt alone in experiencing this, as other fans I interacted with online were usually white. When you described your experience as a Jewish kid with fantasy, I realized I felt a similar way towards a lot of fantasy novels I have read. But I feel like wings of fire stands out. Something I grew up with and loved that I know was never meant, and never will be for people like me. Again, thank you for that video. Sorry if this is a bit long!!
No need to apologize at all for the long message! I'm really happy to hear that my video was cathartic for you! I always appreciate hearing feedback on my stuff.
I'm really happy my video could speak to others who can relate to how potentially alienating a lot of escapist fantasy can be. I'm also glad to hear my video could resonate with people who grew up with the series. To be honest, part of me was a little worried that my perspective as an adult going into the series with "sympathy nostalgia" was a little esoteric x3
I'm sorry if my response is a little short here, but I don't have much to add, you put everything so well! And I'm super grateful for this kind message, thank you! :3

How is the cult from Midsommer white supremacist? Because they are swedish and borrow from paganism? The nazis appropriated Norse culture, they even misused different runes and symbols, and Scandinavia is one of the most tolerant regions in Europe.
There's Nazi imagery throughout the film, & the fact that all the poc die first is no mistake. Ari Aster himself has said that the Harga are White Supremacists:
Defying an outdated horror trope, Aster does not kill off Josh (William Jackson Harper) — the only black character for miles — first. As Aster points out, though, the Hårga are racist, a callback to “a part of Swedish history and European history,” and all of the “outsiders” or “new blood” recruited for mating are purposely white.
“Hes thrown away in a way that the other members of the main cast are not," Aster notes. “And that is because these people have no further use for him.”
The Harga, when not inbreeding with each other, go out and groom new members to either 1. Be sacrified or 2. Introduce new genes by manipulating people into the cult or drugging & raping them (what they did to Dani & Christian), & they ONLY pick white people for this. There are no nonwhite Harga & that's not an accident.
The script also makes it crystal clear that the nonwhite couple were specifically chosen (bc they are not white) & brought there to be sacrificed & were never going to live. The member that brought the nonwhite couple displays hatred & malice towards them when they're not looking, but doesn't do this with the other white outsiders
Tumblr media
(Ingemar is the Harga that brought Connie & Simon, the nonwhite couple). Connie & Simon didn't do anything wrong, they didn't do anything outright to insult the Harga. The only thing they did was be shocked about seeing the ritual suicide & express desire to leave (and they weren't the only ones who did this, Dani also did). And yet they were some of the first to die.
Even the visuals-- the Harga wear all White, it's always in blinding daylight. Whiteness is a GLARING theme. There's also foreshadowing early on in the film, where a book titled "The secret Nazi language of the Uthark" featured in Christian's room just before they go to Sweden.
There's also other Nazi ideology present within the Harga, such as the strict gender roles (the women all wear dresses & cook & clean & care for the children together but the men butcher the bear together), eugenics & ableism (the elderly are killed off at a certain age because they see disability & needing to be cared for as an elder "shameful", which is what one Harga states at the ritual suicide scene, & of course killing off the nonwhite characters), the "return to tradition" ideology (there are NO modern technology in the community, & it's in the countryside).
You see a cult full of ONLY White people, using Norse paganism (something VERY popular with Nazis) in an isolated area, who routinely murder poc, don't intermix with poc, kill off their elderly, Dani (the blonde, light eyed white girl) is praised for her beauty & made their May queen by the Harga, with strict gender roles, & this film was made by a JEWISH MAN to show the Harga as the bad guys, & you don't have a hunch that the Harga are maybe supposed to be white supremacists/nazis? That doesn't raise any red flags for you?
& let's not forget how Scandanavia committed genocide against the Saami, the Indigenous population who were there for hundreds of years before anyone else. That's a little off topic, but as a First Nations Canadian I aint gunna let that just go unacknowledged. Scandanavia has a white supremacy problem too, & Ari Aster is right for pointing it out

I got the majority of this information from the YouTuber Annamarie Forcino's video "The Alarming "Gnome Hunting" Trend No One's Talking About". (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pf0bZOMuVFs)
This post is to help spread this information.
Please be aware:
• If you come across anything with the term "gnome hunting" or anything listed below online, block and report the account immediately. If you come across it offline, covertly and safely get the absolute fuck out of there. Warn others.
• Keep yourself safe. As with any bullshit like this these people may be violent. The wearing of tactical gear and the use of the word hunting when talking about a group of human beings is not peaceful or respectful of life. Exercise caution. Especially if you are in a group the groups they're in target.
• This is mostly on TikTok, DO NOT SEARCH FOR IT ON SITES WITH THE ALGORITHM. This will drive engagement and help it spread. If you come across it block and report it but do not search it.
The term "gnome hunting" is being used by antisemitists/neonazis/white supremacists to refer to themselves, they themselves being the "hunters" and those they target, Jews, being the "gnomes" and is a way for them to talk in code.
Things to watch out for with this specific wave of antisemitic bullshit are but are not limited to:
"join the hunt" = join us.
"millions wear the hats" millions = the Jews, hats = the Jewish Yarmulke/Kippah (a Jewish head covering). This phrase refers to Jewish people in general. When they use this phrase they are talking about Jews.
"kike" a slur against those of Jewish descent and or those who are practicing Judaism.
"88" H is the 8th letter of the alphabet. 88 = hh = "hail hitler".
"⚡⚡" "ᛋᛋ" "ϟϟ" Two lightning bolt emojis, two Greek letter ᛋ's, or two lighting bolt symbols side by side = the nazi ss. The nazi ss flag is two lighting bolt symbols side by side.
"Z" or "z" The English letter Z/z is used by russian nazis against Ukrainians who are being murdered by and suffering war crimes at the hands of russian nazis since the current russian dictator putin invaded Ukraine. Has unfortunately spread and is being used by nazis in other countries. The symbol has similarities to the wolfsangel.
"Ƶ" The wolfsangel. An ancient runic symbol believed to have been capable of warding off wolves, appropriated by nazi organizations in nazi Germany. Still used by white supremacists/nazis today.
(Cannot find a symbol for this.) The sunwheel, sonnenrad, or black sun. A symbol from old Norse and old Celtic culture. Also appropriated by nazis, still used by neonazis today.
"schizopost" "schizoposting" Used by neonazis when they use neurodivergence/mental illness (they do not struggle with) as an excuse for their bullshit. Ex: saying "I'm insane" "I'm schizophrenic" "me and the boys being schizophrenic" in the same post about "gnome hunting" or with any relation to nazi/white supremacists ideology.

he’s the adult supervision, he’s the voice of reason, he’s a cringefail king, it’s Captain Haddock! Quite a few people asked for a timeline post for Haddock after I posted one of Tintin.
I found the whole idea of the Haddock family curse to be very interesting, and the implications behind it to be pretty dark... cw for alcoholism and childhood abuse. Let me know if you need anything tagged.
To figure out the timeline the evidence for Haddock’s age I found was in an animated adaptation of Explorers on the Moon where Haddock mentions he has around forty years of sailing experience. I doubt he was running around on ships as a newborn so that places his age during the canon comics at around 60ish, give or take a few years, which in my timeline places his childhood during the late Victorian era!
Left to right, top to bottom:
Child - Archibald Haddock had a pretty rough childhood and family life. The legacy of the “Haddock family curse” weighs heavily on him, and so does the alcoholism that runs generationally. His father is often drunk, taking his anger and frustration out on Archibald. Fully believing the family curse, Archibald’s father drills the idea that he is destined for failure into his head.
Archibald’s only respite is his grandfather, who tells him stories of Sir Francis Haddock and other tall tales from the sea. His grandfather also would take him out on fishing trips, the lochs and the sea being his refuge.
Teenager - It’s the 1880s and Archibald is left aimless after his grandfather passes away, passing the time by hiding from his father and drinking during the day. He fully believes he has no real future and lets himself get swept up by whatever will come along next.
Young Adult - Archibald decides to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps and becomes a sailor, feeling at home at sea. He cleans up somewhat after befriending George Chester as the two train on the same merchant vessel. Chester drags a reluctant Archibald along into all kinds of crazy antics, with Archibald wanting to stay on the straight and narrow.
Archibald is drafted during the First World War, serving in the Grand Fleet. He is stationed at the Orkney and Shetland Islands with Chester.
Canon - After the war Archibald relapses on his addiction again, but is able to hold onto work in the merchant fleet. He eventually becomes a captain of a merchant vessel where his mental health issues are taken advantage of in the Crab with the Golden Claws.
Seeing his crew mutiny, kidnap (and attempt to murder) a boy on his ship was a major wake up call - Haddock is now imbued with a sense of responsibility for Tintin (even if Tintin seems to handle things better than Haddock!). He doesn’t understand what Tintin sees in him but he’ll be damned if he proves him wrong. He’s not above calling him an idiot when the time is right though.
Post Canon - After Tintin loses his job Haddock does his best to support him.  He uses his wealth to further causes he believes in, donating money to artist collectives and scientific research that was repressed by fascist governments. Before Belgium even joins the Second World War he and the Marlinspike team proactively go out and foil various Nazi plots. Marlinspike Hall is firebombed by the Nazis in retaliation, but after the war Haddock funds various housing cooperative projects. Coming from a working class background he hasn’t forgotten the hardships a lot of people face.
Elderly - At this point Haddock is secure in his found family. He’s been living with his partner Ramo Nash, and has taken up various arts and crafts as hobbies. Looking back, he never expected to be a father, but is incredibly proud of Tintin. He never officially adopts him as a part of him still fears the family curse (plus they both agree “Haddock” as a name definitely does not suit Tintin)!

The speaker of Canada’s House of Commons resigned Tuesday for inviting a man who fought for a Nazi military unit during World War II to Parliament to attend a speech by the Ukrainian president.
Just after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered an address in the House of Commons on Friday, Canadian lawmakers gave 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka a standing ovation when Speaker Anthony Rota drew attention to him. Rota introduced Hunka as a war hero who fought for the First Ukrainian Division.
Observers over the weekend began to publicize the fact that the First Ukrainian Division also was known as the Waffen-SS Galicia Division, or the SS 14th Waffen Division, a voluntary unit that was under the command of the Nazis.

something that i think is really funny is when like. writers for edgy adult shows will write morally fucked up characters who emotionally abuse their family member's or commit genocide or whatever but throw in that said character "actually punch nazis" or "hates sex pests" or even in smaller scales thinks "shoplifting/nfts/ai art etc is bad" even if said character's commit much larger and more harmful crimes on the daily. part of is definitely the writer trying to make a point about how "even fucked up people hate x thing i also hate" or how "x thing they hate" is like a universal truth of the universe. but i also think alot of writers still want their characters to be likable in a fandom lense and alot of fans can't really handle enjoying character's who are morally bad in a way they can't personally handle.
like the reason so many people are stuck on "scott pilgrim dated a highscooler" despite it being said multiple times in the story that scott is a bad person for doing this, is partially because people can only handle "x character is a genuinely bad person" if it's in a way that makes them still comfortable rooting for them anyway.

I’ve hesitated over making this post, but I think I’m going to throw it out there.
I’ve seen across social media platforms (but especially especially TikTok) a real increased n/eo na/zi presence. And I don’t think a lot of people are picking it up because they’re not being overly overt - what usually gives it away to me is less common associated symbols.
I’m going to show examples of a TikTok I just came across that had massive engagement. I’m putting it below the cut for trigger warning reasons. (TW for na/zi/sm, pedophilia mentions, murder mentions and hate symbols).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s the first and last slide. I won’t be showing the ones in the middle, but the summary is - they’re instructions on how to get away with murder such as how to remove your own fingerprints and reduce electronic tracking. A lot of people are obviously very pro-these-slides, because naturally, most people hate pedophiles. Most people are also missing a very important detail on the last slide.
Tumblr media
The tattoo depicted is a Black Sun/Sonnenrad. I would consider this actually a more well-known n/eo na/zi symbol, however many people still fail to recognise it.
As you can see from my original screenshot, 99.4K people saved this slideshow. 337.9k people liked it. Many of those people will not have clicked what the actual messaging is here and who it’s coming from, and that is seriously concerning.

So... apparently that infamous meme criticising shows made by mixed latino north americans(???) not only whitewashed the Chad Real Mexican™ creator they were trying to praise(????), who is a mixed latino, but it was done porpusefully because they were a infamous hispanic community lolcow neo-nazi who's friends with a dude with CP????????
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the extra funny part is that while the neo-nazi whitewashed and lowkey body shamed Jorge R. Gutierrez, creator of El Tigre and Book of Life and character designer in Mucha Lucha, series in which all of the main characters are very obviously mixed race/brown skinned, in some bizarre attempt of a made up strawnman...
Tumblr media
in one of his new series on netflix titled Maya and the Three, which you should check out because is actually great and super well made like everything else this dude directs, ironically enough
THE MAIN VILLAINS EVIL ARMY IS LITERALLY, AS IN, ACTUALLY LITERALLY A BUNCH OF DEAD CONQUISTADORES, THE EUROPEAN COLONIZERS.
The entirety of this dudes work and art is constantly criticising gringos, european colonization of the Latin America and celebrating brown folks in Latin America why the fuck is this neo-nazi using him as inspiration or to put down artists?!?

Also re: antisemitism in the 19th century, it's important to keep in mind racial antisemitism in its full-blown Nazist form hadn't really been invented yet, and Jewishness was primarily conceived of as a religious rather than ethnic identity (hence why Marx was not seen as Jewish by his contemporaries despite coming from an ethnically Jewish family, since they had converted to Christianity before his birth). The "Jewish question" was the granting of citizenship rights to Jews who had not converted to Christianity, which Marx ultimately argues for in "On the Jewish Question" on the basis that religion is a private practice which should not determine citizenship in a secular state.

before you start reading The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma:
list of problems (r/ptsd)
the author was fired from the trauma centre he founded for creating hostile work environment (seattletimes.com)
Famed trauma therapist responds to allegations of bullying: 'It's an outrageous story' (yahoo.com)
Fall from Grace: The Worship of Clinical Leaders (thecounselorscoach.com)
npr podcast where the author says he doesn't think covid caused collective trauma and on the popularity of his book: 'I'm astounded by it. It's a very difficult book to read.' (npr.org)
What if Bessel van der Kolk is right about trauma? (traumathoery.com)
instead maybe consider:
The Body Never Lies by Alice Miller
The True “Drama of the Gifted Child”: The Phantom Alice Miller - The Real Person by Martin Miller (Alice Miller's son)
The Deepest Well: Healing the Long-Term Effects of Childhood Adversity by Dr. Nadine Burke Harris
My Grandmothers Hands. Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies by Menakem Resmaa
Pete Walker's books are often recommended along with The Body Keeps the Score but many voiced an issue with him focusing on abusive parents being the main cause of CPTSD when it is not always the case
another widely recommended author is Gabor Mate who also is often criticized (psychologytoday.com)
same with Judith Herman (wildtruth.net)
