🌻My Language Goals🌻
This is gonna be a pretty long post, so I'm going to stick most of it under a read-more link! My goals for languages are shaped a lot by my interests, so a lot of what I want to do is oriented by reading (specifically, I *really love* fantasy books!).
Broad strokes:
- journaling is an aim in languages I'm not too confident writing in yet
- watching youtube/tv shows is smth I enjoy in languages I'm better at
- I think making small presentations about myself or writing about my day would be useful in languages I'm more of a beginner in
- I need to study/use more vocabulary
🍃 English (native, C2)
English is my native language, so it's hard to envision a major goal with it...
Long term: Teach English abroad :D
Short term: Learn grammar, attend TEFL course
🍄 Czech (heritage, ~C1-C2)
Czech is my heritage language. While I speak it fairly well, I do make occasional errors and often lack confidence. I feel like using it more would be good for me.
Long term: Be confident writing, read more, speak more confidently (and more like someone my age), read more
Short term: Read Časodějové, practice writing in a journal, make new friends in Prague through LGBT events
🌷German (~C1)
German is the language I've been passionate about for the longest. I think I'd like to live/study in Germany someday.
Long term: Broaden my vocabulary, speak more confidently, start reading poetry, keep reading, maybe write something?
Short term: Finish reading Das Fjordland, practice writing in a journal, practice talking to myself
Spanish (~B1-B2?)
I learned Spanish until I graduated high school. I know it fairly well passively, and I feel like it would be a shame to forget. On the other hand, I strongly associate it with school and grades, which makes me nervous about using it.
Long term: Maintenance, pretty much
Short term: watch tv shows/youtube videos
Esperanto (~B1-B2?)
I started learning Esperanto in 2021 during Covid, mostly just to have fun. I think it's super cool, and I'd love to get a chance to meet other Esperantists.
Long term: Go to an Esperanto congress, enter Esperanto writing contests
Short term: Find and participate in Esperanto events online/in person, practice writing in journal/talking to myself
Polish (~B1?)
I'm learning Polish mostly because of my partner. Their dad used to only speak to me in Polish. Besides that, I'm interested in Polish rock music and reading in Polish (especially The Witcher).
Long term: Read, strengthen grammar + vocabulary, learn false friends from Czech better, converse more confidently
Short term: attend summer course in Poland, write in journal
Russian (~A2-B1??)
There are books I want to read in Russian, and those are my primary motivation! However, there's also a lot of music I like in Russian, and I'm also interested in it because of how much I understand already.
Long term: Read Monstrum by Pavlina Grad, read the 3rd book of The Witcher, speak well enough to impress my friend (he is unfortunately hard to impress), get through Russisch in Übungen
Short term: Get through the first part of Russisch in übungen, read the first chapter of The Witcher, read 50 pages of Monstrum
toki pona (~A2-B1???)
I started learning toki pona in 2021 because of covid. I don't particularly have a goal, but I'd love to try and use it to talk to people! I feel like I'm stagnating a bit on my own.
Long term: no real goal here, just fun! maybe conversation?
Short term: start to join calls on discord, send a message in toki pona, engage in biweekly translation challenges
Korean (~A1-A2)
I'm curious about Korean because it's really different from the languages I already know! I really love the way Korean grammar is structured, and it always makes me happy to read something and understand. I have some Korean friends as well, and I hope to someday be good enough to talk to them a bit. I also am exploring Korean food a bunch lately -- I'm vegan, and I've found The Korean Vegan's videos inspirational for quite some time.
Long term: Be able to read books, talk to friends
Short term: Read a short story in Korean (& learn vocab), write a journal entry
Scottish Gaelic (~A1-A2)
A friend and I agreed to learn Scottish Gaelic a few years ago, but he gave up quite fast. I feel obligated to continue, even though I'm not all that good at it (fathast :P).
Long term: Be able to read books in Gaelic, read The Little Prince
Short term: Complete the Explorer section on Duolingo, write a journal entry, make a presentation about myself
Zulu (~A1)
I became curious about Zulu after reading Trevor Noah's memoir Born a Crime, and at the same time a friend of mine also got interested (although I don't recall precisely how). A third friend of mine ended up actually taking a Zulu course at the same time! The end result was a pact to study together.
Long term: Be able to use Zulu with my friend who also is learning it, work through the resources I have (duolingo & TY zulu)
Short term: (longer short-term) complete the Rookie section on Duolingo, do a lesson in my TY zulu book
Japanese (~A1)
I have a lot of friends who are very interested in Japanese. One of them is also a linguist and has repeatedly told me about how elegantly structured the language is... Fundamentally, I have given into peer pressure.
Long term: Be able to have basic conversations with my friend, read a bilingual book of short stories in Japanese
Short term: Complete Busuu A1 course, make a presentation about myself + what I like/dislike + what I do every day

my url is a joke. i’m not a robot. i come from a world where there are robots so i thought it was a cute little reference. that’s all!
my name is flo and i’m originally from prague. i’m a vegan. former chess second. capitalist. gardener. translator. i love to meet new people. it’s a pleasure to have you here!
(for the record since there seems to be some confusion going around. i’ve never killed anyone in my life. i feel very neutral towards robots. i respect their existence. i even dated one for a year.)

I spent like 15 minutes trying to find and remember the name of the vegan bistro I used to go to a lot in prague. Where I got locked in the bathroom twice. But I couldn't find it.... maybe it closed but probably i just forgor what it was. So I had to take a stock photo of loving hut instead which tbf I also went to all the time

I joined a few city tours this past weekend amd today, which was also nice to meet new people.
I finally saw the John Lennon wall and tried my first (vegan!) Svíčková. It was delicious!
Then yesterday there was a mini Karneval parade going on. I still miss real Karneval but it's at least something...
At todays city tour it started sunny and then it suddenly started raining. There was a double rainbow and the Prague Castle looked beautiful in the rain with sunlight still on it, the picture looks shitty though :(
Also yesterday I saw two cover artists (guitar & singing), it was a nice day even though the rain didn't stop...

Chachamaru! How long have you been vegan and what are some of the issues you face food wise?
Ohh I love questions about veganism :) I've been vegan since end of 2018 so it's gonna be 5 years in a few months. Soo food issues haha well I have no allergies/intolerances so I'm pretty free to eat whatever. The beginning was a little tough of course, going omni to plant-based comes with (voluntary) limitations and big changes in eating habits - I ate a lot of meat before as german dishes and my family's slavic meals are very heavy in meat but I can substitute most of it by now with faux meat or vegetables. Like many other vegans I occasionally have cravings for foods I ate back then.
Finding restaurants with vegan options can be still difficult but I personally don't think that's the fault of the food or non-omnivore diets... The owners just fail to be inclusive, it's a social problem that it's somehow still not a given to also cater to people who avoid certain foods for religion, health, ethics or other personal reasons. Same for visits at friends or family and so on, it's just a question of how much the other want to adapt for your sake.
Also I'm still a little disappointed when I look at the ingredients of something I'd like to buy just to see it contains some sort of milk powder or honey. That's inevitable and you just get used to it. I recently visited Prague and it was more difficult than usual to find vegan products since the ingredient lists or menus were sometimes just in czech. I still need to learn relevant E numbers haha
All in all there's not much bad to say (at least from my side) and I think a lot of non-vegans (even me when I was non-vegan) expect it to be much worse than it actually is.
I could talk more about what got better food wise :D Did you ask out of curiosity or do you have issues in that aspect?

no matter what time sleep takes hold of her, frankie wakes with the sun, a habit that’s followed her since the second grade, when she’d wake up with the dawn to run track before school, or head down to the beach to catch the first trout with leo before the tourists were awake. she’s meant to be in the spare bed, but for the last two nights she’s woken in val’s, curled around her like a pretzel so she can ignore the fact that she doesn’t want to sleep alone. in prague, nobody watches the show. they’re way too cool, plus their lives are sort of interesting, which has made the whole getting over miles thing feel easier. last night had followed a pretty standard structure that most seemed to follow post frexit. she’d start the night on a high hyped up by her homegirls, gloria gaynor, dolly and cher as val perfected her cat eye, trying different combos of denim cut-offs and cowboy boots, bodysuits cast off as either too slutty or not slutty enough. when they got to the club, she’d drink herself stupid, scream-sing to beyonce’s survivor, dance on the tables, or in the cage if they had one, feel like her body was plugged up like an ECG to val’s decks, though that was probably just the mandy. then would come the disappointment, the long meandering toilet queue conversations where people with zero perspective on the situation would tactlessly declare he’s not worth it, hun to her choked up declarations that nobody’s ever got me like he got me. most nights would end with her head in a toilet bowl or else being tossed out of a taxi for ruining the upholstery. the villa’s stingy measures have annihilated her tolerance. there was a time when she would’ve drunk a whole football team under the table. she wants to find that girl again.
when val stirs, there’s already a cup of coffee waiting for her on the nightstand, frankie sipping on her own ( with a shot of whiskey in it, the way she’s grown accustomed to it, the way miles used to make them ) part-way through a non-fiction book about ayahuasca and the indigenous shaman in peru. she’d found it noseying through val’s stuff. “ sor-reeey… slept in your bed again, ” frankie starts, from what she’s begun to think of as her side of the bed, glitter still clinging beneath her eyes. “ you gonna spank me and send me to the chokey ? ” she’d ask if she’d hogged the blankets, except she’d been too hot to sleep under them, kicking them off whenever val tucked her back in, and opening all the windows half way through the night for some semblance of air. “ be honest. how terrible was i last night ? ” she means at the club, and at the takeout ( where she’d sob-cried her apologies to vegan val for loading her fries up with cheese ) , and in the taxi ride home watching youtube fail compilations on full volume, and not the lady macbeth sleepwalking skit, but she supposes that, too. “ max’s plane lands in like an hour, dude. i don’t know if he text you already, but i gave him this address. fifty bucks says he sleeps through his stop and ends up in romania. ” @vongosh
