you know that tumblr post that goes "I don't want my fantasy media to be realistic, I want it to be convincing"?
I think a corollary to this is I don't want my fandom experiences to be unique, I want them to be sincere
That's why I enjoy reading the same tropes over and over again. Those authors are writing those stories from a genuine love of both the tropes and the characters.
It's why I enjoy 17 gif sets about the same 3-second interaction on screen. Each one of those sets was pulled and recoloured and captioned and adjusted because each one of those gif makers wanted to capture that moment and celebrate it.
It's why every "I'm glad you enjoyed it" reply makes me smile when I get one on a comment I left. Because I know replying to comments is hard and kind of awkward, but I also know that the author really *is* glad and I'm happy that I could let them know I enjoyed their work.
I love things that are new, sure. But I also love things that have been done a million times already because I know the person doing it loves that thing too. I love the love they're showing. I love the genuine joy and celebration and community it fills me with.

is fanfic art?
This question has cropped up in my online interactions lately, and to be perfectly blunt, I think it's a pretty stupid one.
Of course fanfic is art. It's a creative expression of human emotion and imagination. If that ain't art, I don't know what is.
I think a more important question to ask is, "Who benefits from saying fanfic isn't art?" The answer to that is way more interesting.

The amount of effort, focus, and strength to keep a straight face in public while scrolling your favorite ship tag or reading ao3 should more than account for whatever bullshit exercise your expected to otherwise do during any given 24 hour period

Soooo....
My nephew believes I'm a vampire.
Why?
I barely spend time outside during daylight hours (I mainly work nightshift)
I have fangs (I wish, they are just longer than average canines)
I have a lot of old clothes (cosplay and Renaissance fair outfits)
Extremely pale (well curse our genetics)
I speak in multiple languages (I was just really obsessed with languages in high school, no I haven't lived in those places)
I chugged a full picture of blood (dark cherry kool-aid but cool story bro)
I was unaffected by this till the brat has the nerve to point me out to his little friends and say "see my auntie is a vampire! Just like twilight!"
I died.
I died right there in my brothers house, covered in glitter from my neice, ripping open a package and pouring it on my head.
I'm not a twilight fan.
If I had to pick a vampire, it would be dracula.
I am ashamed to be related to him. Is it too late to return him?
(I'm babysitting tonight. Can you tell?)
