man I love yokai/yaoguai creatures and mythos. my irish butt researches this stuff and the primordial Irish part of my brain goes; "Ah. Perfectly understandable fae behavior."
Now I'm thinking of LMK situations where (due to a mix of immigration/tourism) MK has to deal with entities that he has no context for as an urban chinese teenager.
How this boy suppose to respond to a gotdang giant foot coming out of the sky like a Monty Python bumper?
Tumblr media
Mei learning about different "dragon princesses" from Japanese, Vietnamese, and Cebuano mythos (Example: Otohime the daughter of the Dragon King of the Sea in Japanese folklore) and writing to them asking if they're possibly related and/or if they'd be interested to an awesome city break to Metropolis.
Pigsy gets paid in money-thats-actually-leaves once by a raccoon-dog spirit and almost strangles the spirit the next time he sees them.
Tang ofc has like a million folklore + basic language guides on hand to figure out who/what they're dealing with.

How many forms of the 72 changes could cultivated animals/yaoguai handle? You said that the heavenly soldiers could only handle a limited number.
I don't think I said that they "could only handle" like it's not a requirement.
It's more like an observation. And this is my PERSONAL take based on these observations
Overpowered (Wukong and Erlang) - 72 transformations
Powerful (Highest rank soldiers/runaway heaven yaogaui)- 36 transformations
Strong (Most celestial solider/Demon Kings) - 18 transformations
Impressive (training immortals/stronger earth yaoguai) - 1 to 2 spells
Common (most yaoguai) - humanoid body
Weak (cultivating yaoguai) - cannot speak
We see that Wukong having 72 transformations is considered unusual. On the level of like a once-in-an-immortal-lifetime kind of genius that happens once in a million years. The only other person we see with this same power is Erlang Shen who is considered the best fighter in all of heaven and the only man that can go toe-to-toe with Wukong. I cannot stress enough how powerful Wukong is as a demon and how he being able to single-handling take on all of heaven is something very unusual and a massive threat within himself.
So from that we can easily assume since only the two most powerful characters in the novel have the 72 transformations have this kind of power that this is not common and that other demons shouldn't not be able to have it. Personally I think that no one else but Wukong and Erlang have this level or even come close.
Then we see what is the next level with is the 36 transformations. This is what we see that Zhu Bajie has. Bajie who was the Canopy Marshall of the Reeds, who was in charge of 80,000 men alone and only answered to the Jade Emporer himself because he was so highly ranked. From this observation, we can assume that Marshalls or other extremely high-positioned celestial soldiers have the 36 transformations. Pretty much every powerful celestial that isn't Erlang Shen himself.
I would argue that only MAYBE some Demon King could have 36 transformations, but this is highly unlikely as most yaoguai cultivate through eating humans and not through proper training under a teacher. There could be leeway that perhaps heaven-runaway animals that claim to have cultivated through heaven-means could have this power. This makes it so that maybe 5 Demon Kings out of the nearly 30 could have this level of transformation, and especially the ones that have said they cultivated because they gained knowledge in heaven, not just ran away. I would say this is like Yellow Wind Demon, Yellow Robe Demon, Golden and Silver Horned Kings, Scorpion Demon, and Bull Demon King.
And last is the 18 transformations. This is what we see what Sha Wujing has and he was a Curtain-Lifting General, which is a slightly higher position but we can assume to be closer to the common celestial solider power-wise. This is what I believe that most celestial soldiers have been able to master and is the standard. And what I think that most Demon Kings are able to master as well. I would find it impressive if Demon King could gain a human form, let alone master other spells. I would say this is like Black Wind King, White Bone Demon, Singled Horned Rhino King, Nine-Headed Insect, Jupiter's Rival, Hundred-Eyed Demon Lord, and White Deer Spirit.
We see only higher rank demons like Generals able to perform maybe one or two transformations and that was to escape combat. Only Demon King seem to have one to more than one spells. Or we see that some demons are able to master serval spells I would but they are not powerful as Wukong is easily able to overpower them. I say these impressive demons are like Tiger Vangarud, Tiger Immortal, Elk Immortal, Antelope Immortal, all Eight Tree Spirits, all Seven Spider sisters, and Iron-Backed Grey Wolf.
As for normal everyday yaogaui that have cultivated on their own I would say that they are not capable of transformation spells at all. Most demons we see on this journey are underlings and we see none (that I remember) perform any spells. Just that they are able to cultivate by eating humans to understand language and gain a humanoid body takes all their accumulated power, and they are under a teacher to learn more, they are following a demon king to serve. We see this like Sly Devil, Wily Worm, Hill-Pawing Tiger, Sea-Lolling Draong, Going and Coming, and Springe Grace.
And demons that are still cultivating and cannot speak like the Python Demon.

Omfg this looks amazing. It's coming out on the 5th
I am pleased to share with you the trailer for Ruthless Blade (Miao Shiyi Lang), a Chinese animated short film from the 2nd season of the short film anthology Capsules . Produced by the Ideomotor studio , in collaboration with Paper Plane and Studio Tumble , this short directed by Zhang Bo has Nicolas Nemiri as co-creator . Nicolas is a French artist that I have known and whose work I have appreciated for a very long time. He is particularly known for comics like "Je Suis Morte", "Annie Zoo", and "Hyper l'hippo" (I also remind you that A very beautiful artbook of his exists, and that he participated in my exhibition Homage to Satoshi Kon ). And it's very pleasant to find his 2D style so pleasantly applied to a 3D production:
At night when members of Songtang are about to be sent to the guillotine, their brother "Tiger Eleven" comes to rescue them. During the fight, "Eleven" found that the backstage manipulator was an acquaintance of his. He's finally made up his mind to end his entanglement with her, but the truth turns out to be far more bizarre that goes beyond everyone's expectations

Here’s some brainstorming sketches of a couple of spooky scary supernatural creatures (yāoguài) that inhabit Eleturn. So far, these two are the only two of their kind. One seems to be a super-hetran with terrifying power that resembles a canine, and the other is hetran-like but is but has the upper-half of a faun and the lower-half of a tailless phouka who has similar power.
Hetran- “Hetero sapiens,” meaning, “the wise others.” These people may be different when it comes to specific characteristics, but they all have advanced intelligence and posses bipedal, digit-grade stances. In other words, they are the “humans“ of Eleturn.
However, to us, they’re a dog-boy and a human female with magic, named Ben and Lucille (my persona), respectively. Eventually I’ll make a full ref of both, but right now, here’s just basically what they look like, with censors because, you know, this stuff is iffy on here. Here’s an uncensored version on FurAffinity: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/51351275/
Hey hey, to those who followed me here from deviantART, and have been with me for over a decade, you may remember Ben as being a cat. Yeah, I changed him to a doberman, but I’m not 100% sure I’ll stick with it.

SonicAsura's Doodles #44
"Sweets are something I love to indulge in! Come visit my bakery where the treats aren't just delicious but leads to healing of your choice!" Tikki Cho, owner of the Sweet Healing Bakery.
Meet my new OC, Tikki Cho. A White Rabbit Yaoguai specifically a special subspecies I'll be introducing to you all in my other blog. Her pink and violet fur is actually a birth defect since her parents have white fur. Tikki does resemble Angoramon, a Digimon from Digimon Ghost Game. This unique appearance stems from her subspecies called Mimic, a type of race born with appearances and abilities of specific characters from media, urban legends or mythology.
She runs the Sweet Healing Bakery, a shop that serves pastries of all kinds but also offers various therapy based services. Tikki is a kind motherly woman who likes to help those in need, however she doesn't let the more malevolent ones take advantage of her.
This rabbit yaoguai has incredible physical strength that a full power punch can decimate a mountain alongside powerful kicks capable of causing magnitude 8 earthquakes. Tikki's ears can also be used to fly and create small wind blasts.
There is one side of Tikki however that no enemy wants to meet. She maybe a kind woman but behind that is a beast ready to rend all with her claws...
In a future Lego Monkie Kid fic/AU, Tikki will be serving the role of MK's foster mother. Her life becoming intertwined with two monkeys but also different versions of them alongside other peculiar characters from other franchises. More info on Glitch.
Until next time folks, I'll see you later!

You said that demons do not have communities or clans according to the ancient literature of Chinese mythology, however, in Journey to the West, they have caves, children, sworn brothers and adopted family and subjects that I believe you mentioned obeyed the king for protection and survival. Wouldn't that be something to do as a community or groups? they would be quite large groups. or would this just be called groups? However, I understood it that way, so sorry if that's not the case.
My other question is, I see that it is repeated a lot that "minions" serve the demon kings, so are Minions like other lower-ranking demons and they should not necessarily be the same species as the demon king? (Like, in the first chapters, I see that two demons put themselves at the service of Wukong and it is implied that they were not monkeys)
You said that demons do not have communities or clans according to the ancient literature of Chinese mythology,
You must have misread what I say because I said that clans were "rarely" the case, not that they didn't exist. Please be aware of that.
however, in Journey to the West, they have caves, children, sworn brothers and adopted family and subjects that I believe you mentioned obeyed the king for protection and survival.
Well, you answered yourself in that question. I have always taken it that clans are imminent family or biological relatives, with leeway to adopt kids, but otherwise, sworn brothers and kingdoms are not counted. You can be sworn brothers but of different clans, like Wukong has his family the Sun Clan but none of his sworn brothers or their kingdoms were a part of that. And that you can have kingdoms but they can not your clan as kingdom are more minions following a demon king as their boss rather than a family.
Anyway, demon clans are rarely the case because there are few demons that either marry or have children. We see this a few times but in comparison to the many other demons that is what makes it very small. The smallest 'clan' that I wouldn't consider a clan with White Deer and his adopted daughter White Faced Fox. I would say that maybe the Bull King, Iron Fan, Jade Face, and Red Boy could be considered a clan. The Spider Sisters 'adopted' bugs as their sons of fear of death so take that as you will. And the Nine-Headed Lion adopted 7 lions of his own to be considered family. The only one that has a real clan title though is Wukong as he gave his entire kingdom the honor of being his grandkids and calling themselves by his surname. You will see that with most kingdoms, Kings don't just adopt all their subjects and give them their surnames.
Wouldn't that be something to do as a community or groups? they would be quite large groups. or would this just be called groups? However, I understood it that way, so sorry if that's not the case.
Also I wouldn't consider the kingdoms in Xiyouji are communities as I considered them military strongholds instead. While kingdoms do have multiple assets such as housing, food, and health, I think that communities would also cater to education, child care, and an economy. Demons rarely make their own goods, there are no farmer demons, no craftsmen demons, no demons that made raw materials or items, all they have the take from human villages. Demons have to pillage and plunder because they cannot make things for themselves because they just don't have the resources or well-established community to do so. Demon Kingdoms are more glorified palaces with the royals and the servants organized in a military personal. They are made for the purpose of the Demon King in question and yes they are a group of demons together but they only thrive under their King when they work for them. They are not given education or opportunities to learn arts as members of a 'community' but rather should be more regarded as 'hired help' that are there for their own needs as well to work under the 'company'.
Demons don't work under kings to have a place to settle down or raise a family, they are there to work under their King and fulfill their duties. Demon Kingdoms provide shelter, food, and protection but only if the minions agree to work for their keep. I wouldn't consider this a clan as they are not a family, and I wouldn't consider this a community as it runs more as a military. While you can consider that a community of some kind I personally think of a community being more well-rounded than that.
What I was trying to say with that there are few communities is that you rarely see demon towns or demon neighborhoods. We never see demons that are part of a community that isn't military-oriented or serving under their King. We never see demon civilians or demon villagers. And the only time we do see demons that are not in militaries/kingdoms is when they are loners and trying to cultivate their qi more by eating humans. Demon can certainly have connections and friends but when it comes to complex civilization compared to humans or the heavens, then it is certainly lacking.
And yes the minions that serve demons kinds are to be considered low ranking and often if is the case they are different spices. As said before demons have to cultivate individually so it is rare if demons are of the same family. We see this often in Xiyouji if you see what kind of animals the servants are when Wukong kills them. Sly Devil, Wily Worm, Hill-Pawing Tiger, and Sea-Lolling Dragon all work under Silver Horn and Golden Horn but they are considered a bird, bug, tiger, and reptile if we trust their namesakes. Benbo'erba and Babo'erben are a sheatfish and a black fish working under the Wansheng Dragon King. Shifty-and-Freaky and Freaky-and-Shifty are both wovles under the Grand Lion Saint of Nine Spirits. Spring Grace is a fox working under Great King Jupiter's Rival. All of them are different species for the most part and all are much weaker than their King.
Wukong is a special case in that MOST if not all of his subjects are his monkeys whether that being macaques, gibbons, or horse monkeys. The only exceptions are two one-horned demons that gave Wukong the idea of his "great sage" title. But even then Wukong didn't care when they got captured as he didn't consider them his 'kind'. They were not his clan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The tigers, leopards, wolves, insects, badgers, foxes, and many more were captured but not a single monkey. Wukong adopted his monkey and thus made his clan being only his monkeys, but to anyone else under his kingdom or under his sworn brothers, they are more like hired help.
Kingdoms can provide a lot and even provide a common-minded group with a common goal but they shouldn't be mistaken for a family clan nor should they forget that there is a hierarchy that must be followed where the King is the top priority and not its inhabitants.
If I had to make like a list of most close-knit to most military it would be.
Clans/Family/Adopted - fairly rare and very small (excluding Wukong)
Communities/Villages - nearly non-existent
Sworn Brothers - rare but mostly made mostly for the sake of military connections.
Kingdoms/Military - Most common
If you have the time then I would suggest to anyone to please watch 小妖怪的夏天 from 中国奇谭. This shows Tang Sanzang's journey from the perspective of a minor demon and what it is like being under a demon king. AND I THINK IT IS PERFECT. Great animation and voice acting but also what is is like being a weak demon compared to demon generals or even a demon king... AND THEN COMPARED TO SUN WUKONG. It does a great job showing the power structure of demon kingdoms and I think that is captures how kingdoms are meant to be more military-focused and job oriented than anything family or community-centered. Personally, I think this is a close-perfect interpretation but this is just an interpretation and people can have different idea of how kingdom hierarchies are seen. And even shows how Yaogaui react to Sun Wukong, a yaoguai like them being seen as a hero.
youtube
Please give this a watch even if you just wanna see a SECOND of Sun Wukong in the end. (Also please watch after the credits if you don't wanna be sad I promise it has a happy ending.)

I've gotten a bit of interest in terms of the designs and backstories I've been creating for Sun Wukong's children from Journey to the South, and so decided to post some of my current ideas for Yuebei Xingjun, the Monkey King's large and powerful daughter. Some sketchy thoughts below, with a quick heads-up that there is talk of violence and child death.
The underlying idea here is that the monkeys that do not belong to any of the ten species--i.e. the spiritual primates--come into existence in pairs: the red-buttocked baboon and the bare-armed gibbon; the intelligent stone monkey and the six-eared macaque; and some 500 years after the westward journey is over Sun Wukong adds to that number by crafting his sons Qidou and Luohou from fragments of carbonized bone from the Mt. Huaguoshan massacre and debris from the mountain that the Monkey King, being a stone and therefore a lava monkey, melted and squeezed into the shape of another divine rock out of which his sons were eventually born. Some 500 years after this Sun Wukong decides to expand his immediate family and repeats the process. Yet this time, the vagaries of nature result in his daughters Yuebei and Ziqi not only being born thoroughly conjoined at the head and the brain, but Ziqi dies a few seconds after emerging from the rock. Heartbroken and desperate to at least save a rapidly fading Yuebei, the Monkey King uses his vast knowledge of medicine to perform emergency surgery on his surviving daughter. While it's too dangerous even for him to try and "detangle" Yuebei from Ziqi completely, he does manage to save Yuebei, even though she's left with her sister's face forever merged with her own.
Though Yuebei Xingjun had often been left in tears at the comments of visiting entities on her appearance, the consistent love of her father, brothers, and extended family gave her a pretty happy childhood and gives her a pretty happy life as an adult. Even so, the devastation Heaven's war against Sun Wukong left on Mt. Huaguoshan gave her a bitter hatred against her father's past enemies, and left her fearful of the prospect that her family would face extermination once again. Though the Monkey King frequently warned her against letting this hatred fester, and though both father and daughter were often left perplexed as to why Yuebei Xingjun wasn't capable of learning any of the magic Sun Wukong possessed and tried to help her cultivate, she later found out through listening to the voices of her deceased family members who were killed in the war against Heaven, who were now being led by Ziqi in Diyu, and all of whom refused to enter the cycle of reincarnation until they felt they had been appropriately avenged--that she was capable of cultivating powerful death magic. It was through their help that Yuebei Xingjun eventually formed her skull treasure, which only she can wield and which gives her the ability to curse anyone, even immortals, with a death spell so powerful that it inevitably kills its victims within three days. This was something that caused an paradoxical escalation in tensions and desire for further negotiations between Mt. Huaguoshan and Heaven when it was first revealed. Between the fact Yuebei Xingjun agreed to only use her death curse if her father allowed her to do so and the still sharp memories of the devastation Sun Wukong wreaked during his havoc in heaven, the monkey yaoguai and Heavenly deities now exist in something of a tense peace under a kind of mythological M.A.D. situation. In the centuries since that agreement during which Yuebei Xingjun became one of Mt. Huaghushan's guardians and further appointed herself a "helper in hell" to try assisting her deceased family members in moving on, she furthered her study of curses, and has become extremely proficient in both making and breaking them, something that has become very useful for strengthening diplomatic ties between the Mt. Huaguoshan monkey yaoguai and the yaoguai, immortals, and even humans of other regions.
She also enjoys afternoon naps in Mt. Huaguoshan's orchards, making sculptures from stone, and traveling with her brothers. She's further currently being courted by two monkey yaoguai from other caves, both of them having became enamored with her after she saved their lives. After a lifetime of hearing whispered insults from other entities Yuebei Xingjun is scared to pursue either relationship due to the fear that they're playing a cruel joke on her, but her friends and family are trying to bolster her confidence.
