"Thor as a character was super tricky to adapt […] but [Chris Hemsworth] and Ken Branagh figured out how to transcend, make him somehow relatable but godlike. Hemsworth is, in my opinion, the most complex psyche out of all of us Avengers. He's got wit and gravitas, but also such restraint, fire, and gentleness." — Robert Downey Jr. ("Vanity Fair": Chris Hemsworth on Fear, Love, Furiosa— And Naming a Son After a Brad Pitt Character)

It's like the Prequels again. Everyone blamed the actors when it's the director who deserves the blame.
OKAY BUT REAL TALK I ACTUALLY JUST READ THIS WHOLE ARTICLE BEFORE CHECKING MY BLOG RIGHT NOW AND I JUST NEED TO SAY THAT CHRIS BEING SO DOWN AND OUT ABOUT HIS ROLE IN THE MCU IS SO SAD TO ME.
Now that I've gotten that out of the way: to put my full thoughts into words... I want to say first that Robert Downey Jr. has this to say about Chris (in response to Chris feeling like he's not as important or as cool as the other heroes):
"Thor as a character was super tricky to adapt [...] but he and Ken Branagh figured out how to transcend, make him somehow relatable but godlike. Hemsworth is, in my opinion, the most complex psyche out of all of us Avengers. He's got wit and gravitas, but also such restraint, fire, and gentleness."
And this is SO true. He took the words out of my mouth.
Reading the article.. and how and where Chris notes feelings of inadequacy, or feeling he's complaining to much (and therefore being narcissistic by complaining), the burning himself out, etc. Suffice it to say I was struck by one thing in particular: There's a lot of Chris in Thor. A LOT of Chris in Thor. It's not a surprise to me, in that case, that he felt down and out about his role in the Avengers, and the MCU as a whole when Thor is, inherently, consequently, alien. But alien in the sense of being SO important, SO regal, so otherworldly in sheer scope and in depth that where he fit in was ... quite simply grander than the others in the overall scheme of things.
It was the Asgardians who brought the Tesseract to Earth and safeguarded it, and the Aether. Two entire infinity stones within their protection. That, is Thor. Who was the one to have a vision about the role of the infinity stones? Thor in "Avengers: Age of Ultron". Who was the one to bring the Vision to life? Thor, also in "Avengers: Age of Ultron". Who was the one to realize as far back as "The Avengers" (2012) that someone was working behind Loki? It was still Thor.
And what I find most interesting is that Chris isn't exactly wrong about what he says here:
"Sometimes I felt like the security guard for the team," he says. "I would read everyone else's lines, and go, Oh, they got way cooler stuff. They're having more fun. What's my character doing? It was always about, 'You've got the wig on. You've got the muscles. You've got the costume. Where's the lightning?' Yeah I'm part of this big thing, but I'm probably pretty replaceable."
Ignoring for a moment that this is absolutely not at ALL the truth, it's not a surprise to me that he felt this way for... particular people and branches within the overarching fandom spaces I won't name for the sanctity of this post. And it is unendingly sad to me to have undeniable proof from the horse's mouth that Chris lost sight of how much depth and beauty he brought to the table as Thor. And how important Thor is as a result.
And yet, I honestly don't blame him FOR losing sight of that. There's a lot he had to - and still has to - contend with. And almost everybody sleeps on his portrayal of Thor in particular. It's depressing to see.
RDJ saying he's got the most complex psyche is so true. Gentle and gravitas, restrained but filled with fire. I love that about Thor. I will always love that about Thor.
I genuinely hope, with Chris seemingly realizing just how far out of touch he fell whilst chasing the high that Taika Waititi's dipshit behavior allowed him to chase, that he does do better. Performs better. But I mean that more in the sense of...
Chris, should you ever happen to read even a small part of this: I hope that you fall back in love with Thor. And I hope you see how lovely he is - and has always been - specifically because of your portrayal of him. You and Thor are not replaceable. You're not boring. At no point have you ever been. And I hope for your last foray into Thor's franchise you get to feel the energy you did when you first put on the costume in the first place. When the costume came on, and it felt like it just fit, and you were transformed into the character entirely. I hope your final goodbye to Thor is filled with all of the love that you first welcomed his part to play with; for you and for all of us.
– and sappiness aside, genuinely, I really do hope that Thor 5 can be a film that Chris feels proud to be a part of. A note he's proud to end on. He deserves it; we all do.

One thing I don’t like or understand is how some people don’t seem to really GRASP how much Loki knows about Thor. How much he would never truly underestimate Thor, despite how he calls him oaf and likes to insult Thor’s intelligence, he does not mean it deep down. He is lying because he’s highly insecure. That’s right, not even Loki believes that. If he did, then he wouldn’t even consider Thor a threat, but nope, he knows Thor is his biggest opposition. No matter what Loki does to Thor, he still has known him and been ‘in his shadow’ and has been watching Thor fight for centuries upon centuries.
And you notice that any time Loki tries to “kill” Thor (and I’m not even sure he’s actually ever tried), he’s never surprised when Thor comes back. Literally not surprised in the slightest because he knows what Thor can take. And Thor does hate that Loki would even pretend at testing those boundaries, even if it’s just to delay him, but then he still comes back to to Loki and tries again to reach him and ugh I love how well they know each other, and how they know every single line to not cross with each other but then they cross it anyways (and then half the time Thor is only crossing Loki’s lines bc Loki’s lines are unreasonable).
Like, they know each other perfectly and flawlessly and that’s why they oppose each other so well. This is also why it’s so strange to see any Loki fan actually think of Thor as stupid or incompetent in any way because if you could manage to talk to Loki 100% honestly about it he would disagree with you. He would bend the info and he’d try to explain it away maybe but ultimately he would disagree.

I probably should also further add that you can be athletic and still be smart. Your ability to be adept at athletics has no detrimental bearing on your intelligence. If anything, being healthy and active would only be a boon to your cognitive functionality.
So all of that to say: Thor is not an idiot. Just because he's a "jock" type (which is hilarious to me to say, because even the jock stereotype does not fit him either. It also implies he has little intelligence and is rude, arrogant and cruel for fun. He is not. Especially not post!2011.), that does not make him a moron.
Thor is an athlete and a warrior-king of a fierce space-viking kingdom. There is a difference.
The definition of a himbo (according to urban dictionary) is as follows:
Tumblr media
"Himbo - A dumb or naive man, who, despite looking like an asshole Chad, is actually sweet, respectful, and kind. Typically large, beefy, and relatively handsome, but friendly. Gentle giants, if you will. Perhaps the best example of a himbo is Kronk, from The Emperor;s New Groove. He is large, strong, and stupid, but extremely kind and respectful to everyone. He is also incredibly innocent and unaware of many events happening around him, as most himbos are."
The key words here being the following:
Tumblr media
dumb or naive; stupid.
Other definitions also include:
Tumblr media
An attractive man, often very buff or fit, that is not particularly smart or bright but often tries to be respectful, particularly to women.
Tumblr media
A man who generally is stupid, but tries hard to be a respectful man.

#but yeah like it's mostly probably from comparison TO loki that ppl do this#bc like loki's always so many steps ahead everyone else looks dumb in comparison#but you'd NOT outwit thor just randomly#as a random person#nuh-uh - @thelibraryofsylphide
Hello lovely (i wanna ty for the reblog! ^-^)
I want to also add that Loki can't easily outwit Thor either. Contrarily, they're on the same wavelength a majority of the time; perfectly balanced as all things should be evenly matched, to be frank! :D The only real exception to this is in "Thor" (2011), when Thor is completely in the dark about everything happening in Asgard for 3 days while banished to Earth, (and he wasn't aware of Loki's betrayal before the Warriors told him so. He believed Loki 100% because that's his brother, who as far as he was concerned wouldn't lie to him about anything so drastic as their Father's death.), and kind of "The Avengers", but only because Thor and Loki had been apart for a year (with Thor thinking Loki was dead) and was not willing to torture his own brother for information on his plan. He was more concerned with the fact that Loki was alive at all, and how to convince him to return home with him as his brother. Which ultimately leads to a case that Loki has, canonically, only outwit Thor whenever it's an emotional manipulation at play that Thor was unawares of.
Loki's greatest strength is his intelligence and his ambition, absolutely! I'm not here to detract from that in the slightest. I like Loki as a character. But I've always thought that in the instances that someone compares Thor to Loki and the result of that is to somehow get the idea that Thor is somehow unintelligent as a result is completely mind-boggling to me!! (Not saying you're saying this, for clarification!!! I'm simply speaking broadly, because I do also see that assumption thrown about too! And it is horribly, grossly incorrect.) I think both boys can be incredibly intelligent, and that their strengths lie in completely different fields. A sort of... book-smart vs. street-smart instance. But that doesn't make one of them less smart. It also doesn't make either of them non-geniuses. They're both geniuses.
But to the point:
I feel as though whenever I read the take that Thor is "unintelligent because Loki is a genius", people often forget that Thor has tricked Loki before! Specifically in "The Dark World" when he sleights-of-hands Loki into cuffs. (He's then all cheeky and jokes about how "And here I thought you liked tricks ;D~", what a silly man)
Tumblr media
He then tricks Loki (and the entirety of the Asgardian army, AND his own father, the who-knows-how-old warlord) again with the concept of his escape plan, leading everyone not in the know to think that he had stolen the "biggest, most obvious ship in the universe" to escape off-planet.
Tumblr media
"You lied to me. I'm impressed."
This was all a very long con. A ruse, if you will.
Tumblr media
Not to mention that the entire escape plan was entirely of Thor's own making from breaking Jane and Loki out to getting off planet at all. The only part that Loki's played was utilizing the bridges between worlds. Which was ALSO solely Thor's idea. Loki just agreed to the recruitment.
Tumblr media
It's also heavily implied (if not just flat out canon.) that BOTH brothers worked together to create the plan to make it seem as though Loki had betrayed Thor to get the Aether! As Loki stages this rather theatric display following Thor's lead, I'd wager that this was also primarily Thor's idea, the same with the rest of the plan. (This is also working on the understanding that Loki, by the time he's had his "Trust my rage" moment, would have been full-tilt on attempting to prove to Thor that they can be more than enemies; that Thor can trust him after all. So, working together and following Thor's leadership would be instrumental in securing that trust. Which is entirely in Loki's M.O. by this point.)
On top of that, even in "Thor: Ragnarok" (surprising I know) Thor's intelligence is displayed to be on par with characters like Loki, because he's able to talk in science-fiction mumbo-jumbo with Bruce Banner when they were discussing their plan to get off Sakaar and back to Asgard.
Tumblr media
All this to say that if you ever want specific and concrete examples on how Thor is perfectly intelligent, street-savvy, quick-thinking and altogether on par with characters like Loki, Tony Stark, and Peter Parker, here are not one, but five examples! :)
